Lake Tahoe mystery: Who were elderly twin sisters found dead?

KNTV

Patricia and Joan Miller.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office broke protocol this week and released the names of two deceased residents without notifying their relatives.

The problem is that officials can't find any relatives of the twin sisters who were found dead inside their South Lake Tahoe home last week.

Read the original story at NBCBayArea.com

The bodies of Joan and Patricia Miller, 73, were discovered on Feb. 27, according to the Sheriff's Office. Authorities say they most likely died within a short time of one another of natural causes. They had been dead for several weeks before they were discovered, according to reports.

The Sheriff's Department haven't been able to locate the next of kin of the women.  Apparently throughout their lives, they always listed each other on all official forms.

Investigators have some facts they gathered from people who knew them in Tahoe and are hoping they lead to family members.

They say the two were born in Portland Oregon, never married and were dependent on one another for their entire lives.

They came from a family who made a living in the entertainment business, including a mother who played piano. Among the items found in the home was a photo of the twins as young girls sitting on Bing Crosby’s lap, according to the LA Times.

Detectives said the twins were also in the entertainment business themselves when they were young. They performed with singer Spade Cooley on "The Hoffman Hayride" show every weekend at the Santa Monica Pier. Their performances were broadcast live on KTLA television in the 1950s.

They also may have a sibling here in the Bay Area and may have other relatives up in Portland.

Anyone with information regarding the Patricia and Joan Miller is asked to contact Detective Matt Harwood at 530-573-3015.

I actually love it when I see someone win the lottery that looks like they could use it, some hardworking person that still can't make ends meet. Why would you enjoy watching someone win that already has money?

        #1.10 - Wed Mar 7, 2012 2:19 PM EST

They were identical twins and it shows. They were beautiful. My own mom and aunt were identical twins and they can often have their own world that only the twins understand. Very sad that one died so soon after the other and it may be yet another story on how little we know about the closeness of a set of twins.

TSharp, you would do well to restrict your criticism to the post at hand. Once you start in generalizing with "all you self entitled" whatever, whatever, you're just being a jerk and you lose all credibility. If you have a problem with what someone said, feel free to express your disagreement, if you must, but leave it at that, if you please. Besides, I have no idea how you got a sense of "self-entitled" from a post criticizing someone for what they interpretted as wanting to unjustly profit off of someone else. Seems to me, given the way Robin chose to interpret the post, Joe was the one with feelings of self entitlement.

By the way, I am not supporting Robin's post. Joe's comment may have been crass, but it was clearly meant as sarcasm.

JT, I think the reason the people we usually see winning the lottery look like toothless inbreds and not people who look like they would know how to spend the money wisely, is because people who are good with their money tend to know the odds of the lottery and choose not to waste it on hoping their ship will come in on a Scratch-off. I used to wonder why the winners usually all looked like that, too, until I stood in line behind a few of them buying lottery tickets. It's the same people you see throwing away their paychecks at the dog or horse tracks. :)

Their story sounds like an interesting one, it's a happy thought that they are believed to have died within so close a time to one another. I hope their family steps forward, however if it's been so long to have noticed their deaths I don't carry much hope. May they rest in peace.

Twins have always been known to have a special link or bond, some stronger than others. Sounds like these two were together from the start to the finish - and that's just how they'd have wanted it. A little sad, yes, but also very sweet - and far better than for one to have lived on without the other.

In that picture shown above, circa what, 1950's, they were adorable. They chose a beautiful place to live out their lives. People like these 2 ladies are interesting as they obviously were attached to show business in a long gone era. And Bing Crosby? How cool. He was always one of my favorites when I was a kid. I bet it would make for an interesting read, the story of their lives.

Birth records would most likely lead to their parents, who are most certainly long deceased. Other relatives would not be listed.

It's possible, considering their age that there is no birth certificate. My grandmother's birth record is the family bible and she's 78.

Their birth date was not listed in the MSN article...since they were born before 1940, they should be on that census for Oregon (which is being released soon). Would there be records anywhere since their family was in show business? If their parents' obituaries were published, relatives could be traced with the info in the obits.

I would imagine that they did not have cell phones to check

They may not have had cell phones but they can check land line phone records still...or is that too ancient?? lol.

They were lovely, by any standard, based on the photo. I have two sisters to whom I am very close and they are my best friends at this stage of our lives. Family is everything.....and, TJ Harris, we don't know that they aren't missed by anyone....it could be that someone has been looking for them all along. My sisters and I didn't know for many years where our two brothers were, and after searching nearly 30 years we found them...now we stay in touch and don't let a day/week go by without being in touch with each other in some way. I feel blessed we now have that connection.

My guess is their will, if they had one, names each other. So the real winner here will be the State of California who will get a big chunk of their assets. Maybe we need more old people to die to help pay for all the retired state employes.

If that is so then the state of California needs to send a great big........THANK YOU.

Funny I read the same story and thought how sad two sisters with no apparent contact with family or friends who checked on them.........just them living alone. I wondered if they had declining mental wellness which sometimes leads to people shutting themselves away.

All this verbage about these two wonderful women should be directed towards wishing that they have found peace in the ever after. On another note, did anyon notice that they bear a striking resemblance to Meg Ryan? I would hope that their family is found and that. May they rest in peace!

                                  two wonderful women

Not trying to be harsh but what in this story makes them "wonderful". It didn't say they helped the community, did charity work, worked with kids. In fact we don't know that they weren't really awful people and that's why no one wanted to be around them and that their family had shunned them. Just because someone dies that doesn't make them wonderful...........I hope they were but we don't have any idea what kind of people they were.

gtouch - funny and true. Sounds like they were "normal" people, just very reclusive. Doesn't make them special, but at least they weren't bad people either. Only mystery it seems is that they died about the same time. I hope it was from natural causes.

                                  Rest in peace ladies!

Sad - two ladies, obviously attractive in their younger age (and women 73 and older are still holding on, with all the help available today), who never married - hope they were happy.

Eh, marriage isn't for everyone. I'd hate to assume that all unmarried people are sad... 50% of those who do get married get divorced anyway.

As keep_it_cool said...one doesn't have to marry to be happy. Trust me. I've been married twice and am now very happily divorced and intend to remain that way for the rest of my life. I tell everyone Rod Stewart is my lover...he says beautiful things to me and even sets them to music. If I get tired of listening to him, I push a button and he shuts up and doesn't even get annoyed about it. I don't have to cook for him, clean for him, pick up after him or entertain him or ignore him, depending on his mood. It's perfect. Except for sex...I miss the sex!

If they never married, then their last name, Miller, is a clue. How about the famous ' Glen Miller '?

First, it may be a clue, or it could be a stage name.

But more curiously.. how can that person be "their" son Leroy? What are you inferring?

That Miller is an incredibly common name. Little slow on the uptake COOL?

@leroy...seems as though you are the one a bit slow on the uptake...how can two women give birth to the same child...and who was the father? DUH.
