Authorities say a Washington state woman planned a wedding for a man that she was obsessed with, and she's been charged with felony stalking, the SeattlePI.com reported.
Madaline Ann Desmet, 64, of Des Moines, Wash., met the man she pursued in 2010 at a church group, the Seattle Times reported, citing a police investigation report. She soon proclaimed her “undying love” and, in the span of about a year, sent the man 57 letters, the report said.
He repeated that he was not interested in her, but Desmet picked out a wedding ring and reserved a courtroom for their nuptials, the P-I reported. On Feb. 29, she was arrested. She faced a judge, but not one who asked her to say “I do.” This judge placed her in King County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Desmet is a real estate broker who, according to her website, sells condos in the Seattle area. It's alleged that during the year that the stalking is alleged to have occurred, she sent him 57 letters and contacted him by phone and e-mail, the P-I reported.
Washington court records indicate that she was charged with stalking in 2000, a case that was resolved in 2006.
The stalking came to a head when, in December, Seattle Municipal Court staff called the man about their supposed wedding, the P-I reported.
The police report said that the man also received a call from a Jared jewelry store – they wanted him to make good on the bill for the ring that Desmet had picked out.

HaHa poor guy!
Hey, at least she went to Jared's!
I'VE GOT TO SEE ME A PICTURE OF CRAZY!!! This lady has got to have a steady record of stalking men....SHE'S 64 years old!
Somebody help this poor crazy lady.
Hey, I'm almost 62 and she sounded just a little off, until they mentioned him getting the bill for the ring. Seroquel is a good anti psychotic medicine she could try.
that's creepy, man!
The crazy ones are always the best in bed.
This guy should be high-fiving his friends and bragging that his charm drove a woman insane.
Wow.
they are all big bowls of crazy, you just have to decide which bowl of crazy you can live with...
That made me laugh out loud!!!! Thanks!
If you are talking about women, I disagree. But then again I am more attracted to women who have IQs larger than their bra size.
In some cases, that is really not hard to do...
I prefer both to be in the high range =P
LOL. I wish I could say more, but that might incite a riot.
Why in the world would Jared try to get money from him? If she was there, and obviously he wasn't, the bill should be on her otherwise anyone can say their 'fiancee' will foot the bill, fake or not.
I Agree !
That should be a good lesson for everyone as to how Jared's operates ! ! ! !
No means no!
If a man is saying no it just means not until you have all your close off! ;-}
The really scary part of this story is a jewelry store allowing some woman to walk in, get a ring, and say charge this guy for it. I hope they are just out the cost of the ring for being stupid.
The article didn't actually say she got the ring, just that they wanted the money for it. If they actually gave the ring to her, that would be theft by deception. But I'm with you, they shouldn't get a dime.
Arrested on Feb 29, have they no respect for tradition in Seattle, it was Saddie Hawkins Day. She had every right to pursue her man.
Saddie Hawkins for real in this day and age???? Oh!
a stalker.. that is hot..
a 64 year old one? doubtful.
I thought stalking was only a crime if you intended to harm someone. It's a crime that this woman is being punished for romantic attraction! Such a pitty!
You mean having a municiple government contact you about the nuptuals and a Jared store attempting to collect on a bill you didn't even agree to, much less know about, isn't harm? Is stalking in your blood too? A repeat offender as well...
Nothing wrong with attraction, it's how she expressed that attraction which is causing a problem.
Yes stalking is illegal no matter the reasons. Why private investigators have to be extremely careful, because what they do is technically illegal.
I hope they will consider giving her mental healthy treatment instead of jail. Ladies and gentlemen, I feel there is a lot more about this story than we are presented here, otherwise a 64 years old lady don't act up like this. There must be much more in the story than meet the eyes.
Sounds like a lonely woman looking for love but with someone who didn't feel the same way. Maybe she thought he would change his mind. Either way, hope they get her mental treatment.
Yeah there is much more to the story, but you have to know how to read to find it! It says she was charged with stalking back in 2000 as well...this is her SECOND time with this crime! She's mentally ill and obviously needs to be committed for psychiatric help. moonridre...I'm questioning your sympathy for this woman. Are you exhibiting this same behavior?? If that's not the case I'm wondering why you think there's more to this story and not just a case of a very sick woman?
I bet if it was a man stalking a woman, you would say, lock him up and through away the key.
64 yo women act like this all the time. You don't Age-out of Crazy.
Men stalk women, and do not limit themselves to phone calls and letters. Intimidation, harrasment, physically threatening, yet in many cases it takes years or bloodshed to get the justice system to do anything about it.
She's 64 years old, at least we don't have to worry about this woman claiming she is pregnant with his child!
I teach martial arts and a school I co-run. One of the parents of the kids stalked me for a year. Her husband is a successful CEO of an industrial chemical company and was very wealthy and also a very good looking man. Both husband and wife are Iranian who emigrated to the US in the last 7 years. Before that they lived a pretty western lifestyle where the wife wasn't restricted or anything. Her husband didn't mind that she had a prominent job etc.
So when the wife came to me and said she 'saw me in her dream and saw that we were together intimately' she then knew that I was her soulmate and that we were meant to be together. She wasn't an ugly lady but at the time I was only 22 and she was 48. And my girlfriend at the time did not appreciate the advances either. So I obviously rejected her affections and tried to take the professional route stating that I only teach her kids and while I am flattered by the offer I cannot reciprocate those feelings.
That's when things got bad. She started using her kids to deliver gifts to me when I wouldn't accept them from her. She had Egyptian gold necklaces shipped in and ancient pre-biblical artifacts she procured from archeologists like parts of Persepolis or Babylon since she knew I was fascinated with antediluvian history. When I would give them back to her, I would always find new gifts mysteriously in my shoes or in my office again. So I told her that I would remove her kids from my school if she continued to do so and threatened to tell her husband. I didn't want to lose the business as they paid a lot of money but I also have moral obligations to adhere to as well.
She then started seeing a fortune teller friend of hers who, of course, would tell her what she wanted to hear. She spent over $150,000 on this fortune teller to hear her fortune stated that she and I would be together forever. You'd think the lady would've had a clue when the fortune teller and the fortune teller's son were both driving brand new BMW M3's. But no she was utterly oblivious. She then started showing up at my house. She revealed to me that she would have prayer sessions in the parking lot after leaving the school saying "let's now pray to make sure sensei (honorfic title of karate instructor) will make it home safely and that he will one day come to understand what his destiny is with our family."
I was utterly horrifed hearing the things she put her kids through so I told them never to return to my school. The following weekend the husband showed up at the school. He said he wanted to talk to me in private. We sat down and he said the following words that will haunt me for the rest of my life: "I need to know if you are having an affair with my wife. I love my wife and family and I will not allow any kind of disruption of the foundation I have created for them. If I can't have my wife then neither of us will." He then placed a gun on the table. He meant to shoot me then shoot himself.
I reassured him that nothing was going on and I told him the history of everything that had happened. He was much relieved because he told me that apparently this runs in her family. The woman's sister set her house on fire with the kids and husband inside when she thought the husband was having an affair. So as a consequence the husband 'exiled' her to their 2nd house over 400 miles away. He thought that would be a deterrent until she got over her...delusion.
Fast forward another year, my car broke down on me. 48 hours later, in my mailbox were the keys to a brand new Infiniti G20 sedan with a letter saying which dealer to pick the car up from. The car was completely paid for by...guess who. I went to the dealership returned the keys and then called her husband. He thanked me and then I never heard from them again. I know nothing gruesome happened to her or the family but I still wonder what he did that made her stop.
The only other stalker I've had was by a woman who would eventually become councilwoman of a nearby city. I keep thinking I have ammunition on her that could destroy her career.
Cool story bro.
Wow-- what a story. Make up an ending and you've got a great movie. I'd watch!
Better than whats coming out of hollywood these days.
Ojibobo, get in touch with a screenwriter STAT!
Now here is a good book or movie. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Frankly it would had scared the hell of me. Not knowing when or where she or her husband would be coming at me or mine. Wow. Mental disorders come in all shapes and sizes.
I thought you were going to say the husband bought you the car and now you ride in style!
But good story none the less.
What she has is a delusional disorder, which in her case is a romantic obsession.
If you've ever met somebody with such a condition, then you know they are beyond reason. It may seem funny in the distance. But up close it is just sad and very scary.
Even now, in jail awaiting trial, I'm sure she is yet unshakable in her belief that this man somehow reciprocates her feelings.
I hope the guy didn't pay Jared's for the ring. You would think that by the time a person is 64 they would have gained a little self control.
There are cougars, but this broad sounds more like a sabre toothed tiger. Poor guy.
Met him at a Church Group?
In the end, does that means she had the Holly Ghost spell?
Was told about a case over 30 years ago about a woman who saw a doctor she knew in the produce section of a grocery store and that God had married them there. This doctor was a widower with small children. She continued to harass him, sent him and his kids postcards from her various trips and even made clothes for his children and would continually harass him and ask when they were going to have a civil ceremony and that they were already married in God's eyes. I just knew this ended up in a lawsuit and that she was representing herself. I never found out the end result, but things like this apparently do happen.
Poor woman. When she gets outta jail she's gonna have to pay for the ring. Looking for love in all the wrong places. lol
Poor lady, wish her to go to single groups and there are a lot of Christians single groups. Or just google, and she would find one very close by.
Stalkers should not be pitied, they should be locked up in PRISON from the first offense and left there. You can't fix crazy. My sister was stalked by her now ex-bf's jealous ex gf for years, this lady tried any and everything she could to ruin my sister's life and she never even met this woman in person. False DHS complaints, calling her phone/texting/emailing NON stop, harassing her work, everything. The police wouldn't do a dang thing about any of this depite recorded threats and phone records. People get violently attacked by stalkers all the time so I don't think it's right to downplay this just because she's old...she should definitely know better.
Stalkers ruin people's lives and do so because they know that in most states they will get away with it. Finally the lunatic found a new man and moved on...some people are just better off dead or locked up.
Send her to Mexico.
At 64 yoa, and considering behavior, she needs treatment, not imprisonment. Yes, she broke the law, but does she need to be locked up with hardened criminals at this age? A jury should decide, based on her comprehension abilities and mental stability. This is one instant, where I would agree with an insanity defense. Get the poor lady some help, some medication, and an eHarmony account. Their is someone equally crazy, looking out for a companion, maybe they can be pen-pals while she is getting better. It is not easy being lonely. Even less easier, as you get older and wonder where all the time went.
Yes this woman needs treatment perhaps kept away from society while shes getting it, but not imprisonment. I had a gent actually break my water pipes and call me an hour later telling me he needed to come over because he just knew something was wrong with my water. He was arrested while sitting on my front steps that evening. Some people just live in a different reality....their own reality that is. Imprisonment wont change that but perhaps some good strong drugs and a psychiatrist will.
moonridre
I hope they will consider giving her mental healthy treatment instead of jail.
If this was a guy most people here would be calling for his head.
This lady is in serious need of some professional help.
