Mark Rubinson, 25, left, and Robert Young, 43, admitted to driving around Denver with their dead friend's corpse and using the dead man's debit card to fund a night at a strip club.
Updated at 7:16 a.m. ET: Two men who admitted to driving around Denver with their dead friend's corpse and using the dead man's debit card to fund a night at a strip club were sentenced on Thursday to probation, prosecutors said.
Robert Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, both pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of abusing the corpse of Jeffrey Jarrett last August, the Denver District Attorney's Office said in a release.
Young also pleaded guilty to felony identity theft for using Jarrett's credit card.
Neither man was accused of killing Jarrett, who died at 43 from a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol, Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office told Reuters.
Under the plea agreement, Young was given a two-year deferred sentence and must undergo "mental health evaluation and treatment, substance abuse assessment and treatment, and cognitive behavioral therapy," the release said.
He also must submit to random drug and alcohol testing, perform 50 hours of community service and pay $1,289.56 in restitution, in addition to maintaining full-time employment.
Rubinson was given a one-year suspended sentence and was ordered to the same drug and alcohol monitoring, therapy and work conditions, and perform 200 hours of community service.
Mexican restaurant
Prosecutors said Young and Rubinson found Jarrett unresponsive at the Denver home Young and Jarrett shared, and instead of calling 911 they put the dead man in the back seat of Rubinson’s SUV and went for a ride, local television station KWGN reported.
Police said that the men ate at Viva Burrito restaurant and fueled up Rubinson's SUV at a convenience store all paid for with Jarrett's debit card, KWGN also reported. The men then unloaded Jarrett's body back at his house and visited Shotgun Willie's, a popular Denver-area strip club where they withdrew $400 at an ATM from Jarrett's account, it said.
Only after leaving the club did the men call the police to report Jarrett's death.
As conditions of their probationary sentence, both men must write letters of apology to Jarrett's family.
Prosecutor Kandace Gerdes told the judge that the plea deals "were largely the result of the (Jarrett) family's compassion," the district attorney's office said.
Denver TV station 7News compared to case to the 1989 movie "Weekend At Bernie's."
"The film is about two friends who arrive at their boss' beachfront home for a weekend getaway to find out their boss had been killed as the result of a mob hit," the website explained. "The two men then cart the body around town, hoping to save the weekend of luxury they had planned and hoping they don't raise any suspicions."

If you want your peeps to take you out for one last night on the town be sure to leave it in writing.
They did take him out, according to the article. If they hadn't propped him in a chair in the corner of the club while they were stuffing G-strings they might not have been caught. As it was, the credit card max'ed out after their buddy got his 100th lap dance.
Just another example of dumb and dumber in our society that cares more about the latest stupid movie than the real problems of the country.
I can understand using the friend's credit card. I just don't understand why they needed to move the body around. Unless its one of those strip clubs that does retinal scanning to verify id. very wried.
Shaking my head; If by latest stupid movie, you mean 1989, then yes. Latest stupid movie.
didnt read the article did you denver? before going to the club, they dropped him off because they just drained his bank account, or got all they could from it, and he wasnt of use. what they did was beyond stupid, and using drugs, and a movie as a reason to not do the right thing is just more of how gullible people are to push blame into another corner than where it belongs, the "accountability corner" if you will. its like in CA when they started banning video games because car jacking moron said GTA made them do it. maybe the parents not bring the kids up right were actually to blame, not a game? some kid being bullied in school shoots the people messing with him. who do we blame? well the kid who did the shooting and his parents, not the bullies, or the parents of the bullies that drove the person to that point of no return. accountability has all but become non exsistant until you find yourself in a court room facing time. dont blame parents for letting kids do as they please, and dont blame parents because now they have an excuse, "i cant do anything because ill get slapped with abuse charges" as a cop out. those laws are for people who actually do abuse their kids, and you liberals dont understand the difference between disipline, and abuse. every one needs their nose in everyone elses buisness but their own in this day and age thinking as long as it doesnt affect them personally, screw everyone else. guess what? eventually that too will change. but not before its too late.
because as for taking the body with them... they did it because they figured if he was along in the car, as in ATM machine, cameras would see him, and authorities would think he was alive at that time, and ok'd the purchases, and withdrawls. so, they knew they were acting as criminals.... they just got a break of their lives is all.
@shakingmyhead..... what are the REAL PROBLEMS of our country should these guys be worried about! their friend just died and they wanted to kick it! that was the real problem. your a party-pooper! BOOOO HISSSSSS
I remember when this story first hit Newsvine and I think it's hilarious. Hey, the 23-yr-old is 23---that's his only issue. The 43-yr-old, however, is obviously in need of therapy. And hey, everyone, they didn't take the body into the clubs and restaurants...............though that would have made it funnier.
Imatthebeach- you are about as stupid as they are!
look at the mugshots, id say it was more like dumb and dumber than it was weekend at bernies.
These guys were morons and should have spent some time behind bars. Let me get this straight, you take a dead body around with you, you drink and do drugs, steal, and you get a deferred sentence. BUT, if you get caught with some weed, you do time??
Oh, and these guys weren't using a movie as an excuse, it was the TV station that compared what they did to the movie, from the article -
Denver TV station 7News compared to case to the 1989 movie "Weekend At Bernie's."
and dont blame parents because now they have an excuse, "i cant do anything because ill get slapped with abuse charges" as a cop out. those laws are for people who actually do abuse their kids - WRONG. A friend got arrested for "abuse" while on the job because his kid. All the kid did was went to school and told the counselor that his dad hit him. They arrested his dad. I was there that night for the argument, the brat came around 11 pm and when his parents got mad he told them to f-off and then went to his room. A LOT of yelling, but NO PHYSICAL violence. That brat told the school counselor that to "get back" at his dad, and they bought it, hook, line, and sinker. So no, "i cant do anything because ill get slapped with abuse charges" is NOT a "cop out". That is the TRUTH. ONE LIE and your done. My friend had to pay fines, court costs, and attorney fees. He also had to do community service, go to 10 anger management classes, two parenting classes and now he has a criminal record.
Mtnman, please don't attack and insult your fellow Viners. It is against the Code. lol
And where's your sense of humor? BTW, I'll put my IQ up against yours any day.
They just wanted to be as stiff as their dead friend
Kentuckyteacher4046786 Your spelling is Atrocious and your grammer sucks. You must really be a Kentucky ED-U-CATOR.
Dave, you didn't have to capitalize 'atrocious'.
Dave...it's spelled "grammar." :)
davemo must be from Missouri. Imagine that, one redneck telling another redneck he doesn't know how to spell!
Cocaine is a helluva drug
denver: read the article again please
I would totally let my friends use my debit card wherever they wanted ... just leave my body where you found me!
Imatthebeach - I'd second what Mtnman said before. Truly can't teach that kind of stupid.
This is plain sorry. How could anyone have a good time after their friend dies and use his money? These guys are beyond help. They are missing their humanity. They are animals.
Manat? Dat yous???
Susan: feel better now? Not sure how your story coincides with the article. These are MEN they are NOT children. But thanks anyway.
I don't know,I would like to think that my buddies would take me out just one more time for a good time!!
Mossdog, read the article a little closer. They used the ATM card at the strip club to w/d $400 (probably the max daily w/d). Yes, they have ATMs at strip clubs......at least that's what they tell me. Its really hard to determine why they took him riding around. Surely they didn't take him in the Mexican restaurant and they didn't need him for the gas. I guess they just wanted to say they did it.........drugs.
Im pretty sure the initial story, when it broke, stated that the body remained in the trunk of the car, which was located outside of the strip club, abandoned if I remember correctly.
Just saying
hmmm...a thoroughly gross story either way -is it just me or do these guys look like zombies?
Gunrunner-4916634 - Yepppp, drugs, or alcohol, or both combined, can make people do some very strange things.
However, these two guys, Robert Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, look very, very, reasoning impaired.
Both have a vacant look to their eyes, as if their eyes are "for rent" signs.
The truly scary part about this detail is this: more likely than not, both have a driver's license, and, they could be registered voters.
Both look like they should be institutionalized for general maintenance and care. They would be able to live on a schedule. As in, "Mr. Rubinson, it is time to take your medications, or, Mr. Young, it is time for you to eat lunch."
rae-1629223
That's just what drugs do to people
I could see these fine lads as cabinet members in the current regime. Exactly the kind of integrity you'd expect.
These guys are seriously sick.

Susan: feel better now? Not sure how your story coincides with the article. These are MEN they are NOT children. But thanks anyway.
#1. If you had read the other comments you would have known why I wrote what I did about my friends kid that that got his dad prosecuted over a lie. The last paragraph was in response to what Mossdog stated.
As a matter of fact, everything else I wrote -was- about the article.
#2. I NEVER STATED that these were kids. You need to actually read the aticle -and- responses before commenting.
s, did you feel better after you ranted at somebody for no reason? Oh, your comment had nothing to do with the article, but thanks anyway.
Friends don't let friends...okay, not really sure how to finish that sentence.
They could've abused the corpse even more, I guess, if you take my meaning.
Be careful who you die around ;)
they should have taken him into the club so one of the girls could've worked on his post-mortem rigor mortis boner...
What happens in Denver . . . .ah, . . doesn't really stay in Denver???. . . OK, . . . I get your meaning; NP: they didn't "sexually" abuse the corpse, right? Right? These dudes were straight right? Strip club? Pretty sure they were straight. . . .Ah, . . . here's where the word "ineffable" should be brought in. (BTW: my girlfriend thinks that the word "ineffable" means, "incapable of being F'd.") But I digress, the $64,000 question: how did they bring the deceased into the strip club? A wheel chair? A foot locker disguised as a . . . well, . . .a coffin? Did they ditch the SUV and pull up in a hearse? How did they know that their friend was dead? Maybe the excursion to the gentlemen's establishment (I love that description: "gentlemen's club") was a last ditch desperation attempt to revive the friend. Did the stripper(s) know that JJ had crossed the River Styx? Were the girls at the club drop dead gorgeous or just ridden hard and put away . . . dead. Or maybe their friend had always said: "save the last (lap) dance for me." Good advice: "be careful who you die around."
I wish people would read the article before commenting...they took the body back to his home before visiting the strip club.
@Roger McGuinn pretty much everyone knows when a writer throws in the ridiculous, juvenile, over-worked and pretentious phrase of 'I digress' they are going to say something incredibly moronic. And you did not fail there. The entire novel you wrote here is based on your $64,000 question-but a cheap pair of $1 store reading glasses would have answered it for you. Re-read the article WITH the glasses on!The WHOLE article not just the first sentence.
Sick f*cks.
I would like to know more about these pilgrims. How were their grades in high school? Did they play any sports? Did they have dates for the prom? Do they own a meth lab....you know the basic stuff.
I'm guessing that their grades weren't that good. Maintain full-time employment? Who is going to hire a bonehead who drove around with his friend's body in the car?
Quite a few "normal" people can not maintain full time jobs nowadays...
I think the 25 year old made a crummy choice following the adult here and the drugged up drunken looney decided his buddy would want to party one last time. At least that is how the article reads and by the look in the young guy's eyes--I'd guess taht is what happened. If the old one hadn't stolen money-it would have been a fairly harmless prank.--Weird, but harmless.
Since they have experience toting around dead people they could get a job at a funeral home or morgue
Cookie, they are both adults. It almost sounds like you're defending the 25 year old because of his age.
A 25 year old is an adult. I'm sick of all the discussions I see saying that the age of adulthood should be raised to 21 or even 25. It's ridiculous. People need to start taking responsibility for their own decisions. If parents would teach consequences for actions, when the kid hits 18, he might make better informed decisions.
katy: what planet are you from? they are NOT kids as you state. read the article again please.
I know they're not kids. I was responding to Cookie's statement of saying that the 25 year old followed the adult. Then I kind of went off on a tangent as I have been reading lots of boards lately saying that adulthood should be raised. But one reason that the 25 year old or even the 40 something year old may not have used the best judgment is because the people around them treat them like kids, or because when they were kids their parents bailed them out of trouble every time. It doesn't excuse them, though. They are responsible for their own actions.
Unfortunately Katy, people are not ALLOWED to discipline their children anymore.
Just one example: check out Susan's post #1.10
It's just one example.
And just how does someone take money out of an ATM with someone elses debit card without knowing the PIN?
they were friends... he could have told them his pin?
I have many excellent friends. I have never told any of them my PIN! Even my husband doesn't know it.
I wondered that myself... Why on earth did they take his body anywhere? They coulda just took the card.
The Dude was DEAD. His co-scumbags probably rifled through his paperwork, and private documents, until the found the PIN . Or, like another said, he was a junkie scumbag himself, and probably blurted it out when he was wasted? who really knows how the sick mind of junkie ass scumbag works..
Probably written on the back of the card, like so many people do...
I worked with a guy that had his PIN written on the back, in case he forgot it.........not the sharpest tool in the shed! Kinda like these 3!
All I can say is ... well, I really don't know what to say except what on earth is wrong with people?
Most of my friends and family know my pin because I have let them use my card for purchases when helping out or asking them to go on a run for more whatever. Here... it's 5642. Now you know it too! See... you have to also have my card......
The lesson here isn't. "Don't let your friends have your PIN..." It's "Don't use so many drugs and drink so much booze that you DIE!" THAT's what he's an idiot for...
The dead man was one of the other's roommate. He probably knew the PIN number because of that. However, they both look as if they are 99cents short of a dollar. Special education and court ordered rehab probably won't work for these two.
you don't need the pin, just run it as a credit card. my son did that to me on several occasions.
Probably written on the back of the card, like so many people do...
Thanks for that.
Banker Von Thief
well boss these two are clearly pin heads so....
Punishment fits the crime.
Fibrecon- get them on ssd for what? Stupidity like yours? It isn't easy to get ssd as apparently you do NOT know.
Thank you Blue Rose. Some people think that all you have to do is apply. What they don't know is most (95%) get turned down the 1st, 2nd,3rd time. You have to get a notices from several doctors and any condition has to be verified. Sheesh, why ??????!!!!!
@ BLue Rose of Texas...I believe Fibrecon was being sarcastic...
The future of America is safe with mental giants such as these.
How is dude on the left 25. That must be a misprint.
Drugs are bad, m'kay?
Mugshots always make you look older. Poor lighting, poor picture quality...
Major drug and alcohol abuse over a prolonged period of time can make any 25-year old look 40. That was definitely the case here!
Could this have really seemed like a good idea at the time?
Drugs and alcohol always make for good decisions.....
Nice to know they "stiffed" their buddy by not taking him to Shotgun Willies.
Wow, they look effing stupid in their mug shots. I used to think Colorado was cool when I was 20.
Colorado is an amazing place. Some of the people in it, on the other hand, are questionable just like anywhere else.
Those guys look stoned or hammered or possibly both. And COmommy, you're right. There are stupid people everywhere, even among the academic elite.
Simple. Some debit cards act like a credit card so no pin number is necessary. It will still deduct it from your checking account.
I've never seen an ATM site that doesn't require your PIN...
This makes sense for the restaurant/gas maybe, but to withdraw $400??
There is no such thing as an ATM that doesn't require a pin hazmann. I am sure that since they were roommates they knew the pin.
Regardless, this is a crazy thing to do.
i think it was noble of them.never leave a man behind.
EXACTLY!
yes. some people just need to watch Band Of Brothers
An obvious case of Semper Fried! DUDE, let's like take him for one last road trip and dude, you KNOW he would want us to see some ta tas. We gotta DO it dude!
I think if they would have taken him to the Strip Club, the roomate was just flipping for the bill. The dead guy was present and using the CC with his consent!
I would love to party with these guys. I would do shots with them till they passed out. Then I would take them to the closest Elementary school playground, pull their pants down around their ankles, and leave them there with a big bag of candy for people to find them in the morning :)
I wonder what else would happen after you pulled down their pants. HAHAHAHA
rfrisch,
My brain did'nt even remotely go there. But yours did right away, hmmmm. HAHAHAHAHA !
Thank you for the compliment. I guess I just have one of those warped demented brains. Stupid is as stupid does. HAHAHAHA
Schoolyard,
Next time coach tells you to put a helmet on, listen to him o.k.!
I was thinking what the heck goes on in some peoples minds when I read about these guys, and then I read schoolyards thoughts. Wow. The mind can sure go to the crazy place.
WOW, life imitating movies. That's a no brain, which these guys didn't have. But it seems like that's the way of society now. Stupid is as stupid does.
Genius at work.
Sentenced to "...and cognitive behavioral therapy..." Now just what the heck is that? Sounds like "think before you act" or "look before you leap". So part of the punishment is to teach one of these idiots how to (finally) think? If they haven't learned by now, they never will and will remain potential candidates for a Darwin award at any moment.
What a riot! Thats the kind of buddies i want when i die!
me too!
They got a sweet plea deal because the sap family felt sorry for these 2 intellectuals. What a gene pool we have out there.
Your are right what a gene pool. Also looking through his jeans for his money to party with.
The gene pool needs some chlorine!!!!!!!!!
Funny, almost reminds me of "Weekend At Bernie's".
Couple of redneck mouth breathers. No doubt their IQ and age are similiar numerical values.
"As conditions of their probationary sentence, both men must write letters of apology to Jarrett's family." Those letters would be keepers!
All I would need to see is those pictures and I would steer clear of those two!!
Has anyone else noticed that they LOOK like the characters? This is where you have to be specific with your final arrangements if it involves your friends!
my friend YOU ARE TOTALLY CORRECT! they do resemble the characters!
That's an old Irish joke and practice. Good for them. Of course the old way is to simply take him to a bar, sit him in the corner, drink to his voyage and leave him there to receive the bill, but this is the 21st century. So I guess they had to go with his credit card. Probation's ok. The Irish guys usually had to deal with the P.O.'d widow which was worse. Hope when I go someone has a sense of humor (and that my wife doesn't kill them for it). Reverence is over-rated. LOL.
Johnny Tarr.
The difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral is one less drunk
Ed McT, "reverence is over-rated." That's one of the best comments I've ever read here--and I totally agree with you.
Already agreed upon with my wife....there will be a keg next to my casket!!!!!
Interesting that when the Catholic Church desecrates a corpse and puts the body parts on display, it is called a holy relic and considered saintly .... when anyone else does it or something similar like this, it is a crime ...hmmm !
Jeffrey, friend, that is one truly bizarre comment. Uh...........I'm not sure what you're referring to here or how you made the connection to this discussion. Maybe you can clear it up for me?
Imatthebeach .... the friends took a dead body around with them and basically had it on display. Maybe you missed the article a couple days ago, where the Catholic Church in Ireland had a 900 year old human heart on display and someone broke into the cage and stole it. The point is, if anyone kept a body part of a dead person or a whole human being it is a crime, hence the two men being charged with a misdemeanor (surprized they were not charged with disrespect to a corpse.) However, the Catholic Church has various parts of humans they put on display as "holy relics" .... and no one even bats an eye.
So ? If the two guys were to claim to be Catholic and they thought of their friend as a Saint, would everyone turn their head the other way ? lol ..... I am not trying to me too mean, but I don't understand how one group can do something in the name of religion and anyone else who does it, is charged with a crime.
Quit beating the dead horse.
