Security footage shows two homeless men helping an officer subdue a violent attacker inside a Pompano Beach, Fla., McDonald's. WTVJ's Jeff Burnside reports.
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Three homeless men came to the aid of a deputy who was trying to arrest a man who had become violent with him, authorities said Thursday.
Deputy Kevin Meyer was dispatched to a Pompano Beach McDonald's on Saturday morning. When he arrived, he was told that Patrick Davis, 29, tried to steal someone's backpack.
Davis went towards the door holding a metal object when Meyer tried to handcuff him, authorities said.
The suspect reacted with "super strength" that police believe he had temporarily from a drug he was on when the deputy went to handcuff him, knocking off Meyer's glasses, the Broward Sheriff's Office said. His radio microphone also came off and the handcuffs fell on the floor.

The homeless men were inside the fast food restaurant and one man grabbed Davis' feet while the other helped him down. A third man also offered to help.
"I think they're phenomenal," Deputy Meyer told NBC Miami. "While the restaurant was full, everyone else didn't make a move they decided to make a move, risk personal injury to themselves to help a stranger, basically."
Meanwhile, another deputy arrived and cuffed Davis, who continued to kick in the back of the patrol car.
He was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction with violence, criminal mischief, depriving an officer of means of communication, attempted escape and robbery with a weapon.
He was being held without bond because he had two outstanding cocaine offenses, authorities said.
The three men will be honored by police, police said.
"They're fine in my book," Meyer told NBC Miami.

Well at least ONE druggie loses. I don't think he is going to like his jail guards. LOL.
Hi Tumblweed,
I had to vote you up again.
Bullsh!t, I saw the video.
The only thing difficult is for this cop to go to work after his brothers have seen the video.
These men will be honored? How about finding them a place to live? A job? Some food or a shower? Honored?!? Yeah, give 'em a plaque that they can hang up....wait, NOWHERE. gezzus
Way to go guys!!!!! Everyone is so down on the homeless. Yet, in a full restaurant they were the only ones to jump in and help. I say these men deserve a big reward that they can use to help get them off the streets.
Thanks guys for doing what so many others wouldn't!!!! You are Heros!!!! God bless you!!!!
I agree; they embody the true spirit of America.
You got that right Silverrob, they didn't stop to think whether the deputy was on the left or right, just knew the right thing to do. Finally a non political feel good story. I'm so sick of the division in this country right now. Very proud of these men. They may be recently homeless, maybe used to be your neighbor before the housing crisis, who knows. Homeless is just a word anymore.
Yes, and i hope the next time someone is disgusted with people who live on the street they will remember this story. And i hope the next time law enforcement starts kicking the homeless around and slamming them with a billy stick so eager to cuff 'em they will too remember this story. Truth is, you never know what someone's life has been and why they are in the circumstances they are in. And while they are being honored for selfless acts, maybe someone will find them a home, maybe one of those foreclosed ones that bank of america likes to bulldoze down. And maybe it was selfless acts that got them on the street to begin with. One time a friend of mine was complaining about the vietnam vets living under a bridge close to her home and my reply was "Someday there won't be enough bridges if we keep up like this". Love to all.
Yaaay! We need more homeless so the cops will have handy back-up! (sarcasm in action there)
I would like it if they got some monetary reward. It would be fair. Unfortunately, life isn't always like that.
Yeah, the three homeless men will be honored alright. They'll be locked up for being vagrants, and fined $300. apiece. The honor will be a dinner of baloney with cheeze on rye bread in their honor.
Jim, sounds like you need some time as a guest of Sheriff Joe. Justbecause someone is homeless doesn't make them a criminal, or uncaring. These men showed their moral strengths, and helped someone in need.
Some "homeless" are that way because they choose to be. others are down on their luck, and out due to poor judgement, poor finances, no job, and just down right bad luck. i was homeless for a couple of ays, and a man i barely knew invited me to stay in his home until I got things together. I was there one month, and am still in debt to him. he passed away a couple of days ago, and i know that no matter what else he did in his life, one person will always be grateful he was around. RIP Tom Wilt.
You were Sooo lucky! RIP Tom Wilt
Sounds like he was a good man. Many don't want to take a chance on inviting in the wrong homeless person. It's not that they don't care. I have met a woman who had a friend that befriended Ted Bundy, a stranger, and you know what he did to women. Careful people usually have good "luck".
I actually teared up reading this story. It just reminded me of a saying, "but for the grace of God, there go I." It is a recognition that others' misfortune could be one's own, if it weren't for the blessing/kindness/luck bestowed by fate or the Divine.
Bless these men, they acted with bravery and honor.
I lived alone as a young woman, and always let homeless people stay a few nights in my home. Three nights maximum while they figured out what to do. They could at least have a decent place to sleep, good meals, showers, and clean clothes.
But it was a different world then. Most were just transients passing through. Many found something that needed done and did it, if it was only mowing the lawn or vacuuming the carpet.
I miss those days. They often had fascinating stories to tell, or knew about some subject that was interesting. I'll never forget one very old man who had bummed around for decades. He played blues harmonica like I had never heard--just incredible. I said, "You could have been a star." He said, "I've always been a star. And you're one, too, missy." Made me stop and think.
Gosh, I miss my country. Miss my world.
The sad part is that when the fascists have it all and have finally destroyed our country, they still won't be satisfied.
About what you said about the facists, you're right.
But what can anybody do to stop a rapidly growing group of idiots?
Not a few people leaving a comment on a news broadcast, you would think.
But this is a world where someone could say (fake and gay) and start a huge arguement, flooding the internet with replys and pure craziness.
So if enough people would start an arguement AGAINST them, that group of idiots would lose ground and start losing people.
It's just my idea, but it has potential.
So let's get the ball rolling here people.
Respect for these men who helped the Deputy during his arrest of a resisting subject. These types of situations can become deadly for either the officer or the subject very quickly. As was mentioned, these men could have sat by like others an not do anything to help, but they chose to jump in and assist. The city should try and assist these guys in finding steady work and a place to live. It makes me wonder if any of them were Veterans.
Good question Mike. It would have been interesting to know that.
Although it is not only our military and veterans who are heroes. Truly the world is full of people of good heart and who will step up when the time is right. We only ever hear about the people of the world who are on the other side of the fence though. I would like to see someone jump in and help these guys with something they might need ... some money, a job, a place to stay, or whatever their needs might be.
I'll be surprised if they don't end up getting jobs out of this. Some quick thinking potential employer will think they're deserving and save himself the cost of a help wanted add and the hassle of going through a stack of applications.
Well Mike. I hope they do get some help out of this. They sure deserve it.Keeping in mind that some people like the freedom of being homeless. I find it very telling that they were the only people who helped... The other people just sat there. Of course, homeless people, and poor people also, have a tendency to be able to judge a situation quickly. And act when they must.
While we look down our nose on the homeless and often think of them as something "less than"... This incident proves that they, like us, are simply human. Thanks guys for helping to capture a violent thief. Thanks for risking your own safety while everyone else simply watched.
NB820,
Agreed. Did you notice that it was the people who needed a hand themselves that were the ones willing to extend a hand to help the officer? The mayor should find a way to reward these guys and at the same time shame the rest of the people who just sat on their thumbs. The thumb up their a$$ crowd demonstrated their worthlessness to their neighbors, family and community, unwilling to face minute danger to assist one of their own cops in trouble. A la Monty Python, I spit in their general direction.
You weren't there either so don't equate yourself with the ones who did help. No one knows what they'll do unless they are in a situation like that and no watching the video doesn't count.
THANKS to the unnamed homeless men.
I'm sure the Deputy is very grateful as are his co-workers. This situation could have turned very ugly very quickly had you three not intervened.
Now, to the City of Pompano Beach. These three men deserve any and all assistance you can provide them locating shelter and work. They have proved that they are willing to do what many others couldn't or wouldn't do. Step up and do the right thing for these men!!!!
There are lots of selfish people who have made it financially by helping themselves and not others. The selfless gents who aided the policeman probably ended up where they are by putting others interests ahead of their own, rejecting the notion that life needs to be a dog eat dog world. Self worth and happiness has nothing to do with financial success.
Thanks for posting your commit about happiness. this is so true, It bothers me tremendously reading the other commits with their backhanded compliments. Why people feel the need to put such emphases on the fact that these men are homeless, and because of this it so much more extraordinary that they intervened and helped this officer in trouble. Give me a break! Who in the world do these people believe the homeless are, another and of course, lesser, species? Please everyone remember that there but by the grace of God go I (and possible you!)
Financial success sure helps along happiness though. If you're homeless, you don't have time or the means to think about frivolous parties and such.
The homeless eat at McDonalds. But liberals always tell us that McDonalds is evil. They say the police are too. Where is the truth?
B from E
Huh? Where are you getting your information? You win dumbest commemt of the day award.
I'm a liberal and I never say that McDonalds is evil. I never say the police are evil. So, where do you get your "truths"? Make them up, do you?
Capted B from E wins the Dumbest "Commentor" of the "Year Award.
B from E, typical Conservative Jerk who thinks he knows what liberals do, say, want, like and think; however, he doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground.
The homeless drink coffee?
Some homeless do. Just because you have enough money to buy food doesn't mean you have enough to own a home. Some homeless are the working poor.
HShaver, you are right about some homeless being working poor. I am working poor, but not homeless. It just sent shivers down my spine because I am working poor only because I have a disability. Never mind the fact that I have a college degree and a technical two-year degree as well. When you have a disability, any education you have means absolutely NOTHING. To society, you are damaged goods if you have ANY disability, and you will not be allowed to improve your lot. My disability is one on the autism spectrum, and mainstream employers have not been willing to keep me as an employee just because of the disability. Never mind the fact I showed up for work everyday and did my work, and did not have to redo any of it. To them, I was garbage, and many would say stuff that would have pleased Hitler, the human breeder. Employers have told me that when you pay a person you feed them, and when you feed them, you breed them. I know the Americans With Disabilities Act exists, but judges throw out ADA cases right and left without even reviewing them just because the plaintiff is a person with a disability. We are disenfrancised everywhere. I work for an independent living center. (ilc) ILC agencies will hire people with a disability but the pay is very poor. It is not a living wage. It is about the same level of pay we might expect from a mainstream employer if they could get away with it. ILCs are disability rights centers, but they forget that one of the rights we SHOULD have is equivalent pay with non-disabled people for the same work. I don't know about other ILCs, but we never get a cost of living raise or even a merit raise. This is very discouraging for me, and I don't know what to do but try to survive day to day. With gas prices and food prices the way they are, I am afraid I might have to move outside. I have family, but they are angry at me for being born with a disability, and consider me to be a disgrace to the family because of my disability. They are all in comfortable living situations. My sisters are both married to successful businessmen. I am a widow. What man of means will be willing to marry what a lot of people call "damaged goods?" My mother is also very well off, but I don't get help from family. My mom is most likely to help me but my sisters will intervene and tell Mom not to help because they do not want me to survive long enough to get my share of a large inheritance because they want my share. By the way, I do not do drugs, alcohol, gamble, or anything else that would drain away my small paycheck quickly. I don't even smoke, never did. What I am saying is the truth. As a disability rights advocate by "profession," I can tell all of you this-the public and official view of people with disabilities is that of people who are not quite human. It is much the same as in the 1920s when people with disabilities were sterilized and confined to institutions. The only reason we have ANY rights at all is because of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Those judges who throw out ADA cases regardless of merit or without even reviewing the case because they think we are human garbage, will go straight to hell without meeting their maker.
Would you like an intelligent answer or a sarcastic, dumb answer for that question?
I think your comment needs a little tweaking. You know, to make it less offensive.
Depriving an officer of means of communication........What will they think of next.We are quickly becoming a police state. With every law passed...We lose more freedom.Don't get me wrong.I am for law and order, just that we are not a free people as in the 50's & 60's.pre political correctness which is BS.
Kudos to the homeless heroes. Here's hoping that P.B. city officials do right by these gentlemen.
We can always count on the stupidity of repugnican trolls to spill their bile on excellent human interest stories. It's sad that #8.0 wouldn't be smart enough to recognize the truth if it hit him in the face.
So, IGH, which freedom does political correctness take away from you? Your Klan membership? Your right to burn crosses at night in order to intimidate minority populations? Your right to be a terrorist?
The only BS here is you, IGH!
that we are not a free people as in the 50's & 60's.pre political correctness which is BS.
BfromE. Are you a product of that era? Doesn't sound like it.
I don't know much about the 50's . . . . . . . . oh yea everybody was scared of the USSR and building bombshelters. Hmmmmmm the 60's. Yea I remember that time. Let's see. there was Vietnam and all the riots and three assinations [two Kennedys and MLK] Good old Charlle Manson. Oh and let's not forget the USSR and now "Red" China. Plus we still had our "duck and cover" drills and bomb shelters as well. I could go on but yes there has been some tension all since 9-11. anyways back to digging my new shelter in the backyard. now where are my keys to my backhoe??????
And, when was the last time you voted?
Have you ever participated at the county or municpal process by attemtping to run for a position to do something about all these laws?
Or do you just whine?
I'll bet you want the full protection of the law when it protects you, though....
He did deprive an officer of communication. That's how they do it. The police and lawyers throw everything they can at you in terms of crimes, and watch what sticks. I don't feel sorry for the guy getting this charge at all.
They know who the third guy was because he kept hitting Davis with a stuffed sock repeating "Homey Don't Play That"!
"Honored" by being "relocated" to a poor part of town I bet...
If they give them anything to honor them where will they put it? They have no home. Why not honor them by building affordable housing and naming it for them instead. And make sure they have a home in them
Gotta have respect for anybody who steps up and offers assistance to a cop in a case like this. I suppose the next thing we'll be hearing is that the guy who was getting cuffed will file an excessive force lawsuit. Maybe that's why so many people were hesitant to offer any help. I'm saying maybe.
Yet another story of crime and punnisment from the Fail Gov. Bush State of FLORIDA.. Muss be the Fluoridated water. !!!
Three heros civilians doing a work even rorsach denys is possiable of humanity, proving the homeless is american as the apple pie Osama ate when he got bombed.
Officer in diffuiculity but christian brothers speed to save the brother of jesus , How beatiful if I were jesus i would smile while typing how great but Im so Beautiful i gotta go proably smile my friend!?!
Interesting...I didn't notice mention of their religious preference in the article.
Q.... M..... What the heII are you smoking' some crack that you stole from your local dealer? Understanding what you mean is impossible just reading it gives sane people a massive headache.
I think he believes that by acting all mystical with his attempt at wit, it might somehow make him look cool. Heads up bro, you failed.
Huh ?
his thought was stun by the miracle of mystic that dident even show naw its possiability, Guess the competence is just ignorance from a massive attack from perception dont think nodealer could give crack that can inoxicate a mind like this miracle of brian shuch magic!

It would be best if you just stayed off the internet. You have absolutely no ability to spell. A blind monkey pounding on a Speak-N-Spell has better grammar, and my cat walking across my keyboard at night could form better sentence structure. Then to top it off, what little we can make out from your postings sounds like what we heard from that "why Salvia is bad for you" video.
Good God, QM, what is that?
I want some of what you had, on my day off, of course. I'm thinking I won't be able to leave the house after i eat/smoke/inject it.
why would you eat, smoke, inject it when you had what you said was bad to have so you injected crack Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! looks like you had it when you posted your comment what a day off next time invite me and no i dont smoke crack just weed! Thats American i can say it but not sell it!
Now thas america it dont need to be! And all spelling is not good on the internet so stop the sore of not bein sting guess the bee was more interesting than the cat walking making a more sensible story and comment could perform better sentence structure.
And the monkey who was pounding was cause your stupid ass was watching that "Why Saliva is bad for you" cuz i neva watched it so it started pounding the button to keep you making sense and spell right!Clue My beauty and Postings topped it off cause of constant reply repeat!?!
I think I actually felt brain cells dying trying to read that gibberish. No joke but that was some of the most retarded hogwash I've seen in years.
@ QM
Son of a b**ch!...I don't know...I mean...
F**k it, you win.
George, your statement IS totaly out of order, an correctness
I hope more people step up and help these gentlemen. Thank You!!!
This is a very confusing situation, the officer must have miss the class on killing first then ask questions. It happens every day in the US, we call it justified murder when a cop kills an unarmed citizen. And the US preaches every day about Human Rights issues in every country except our own. We continue to torture our own citizens (clp Manning) and he has been convicted of nothing, Bush really open up a can of worms when he started torturing people, now we torture our own.
Whine much? Just couldn't resist posting some mindless rant could you?
Gary, why would he want to kill a guy when obviously he didn't have to? And torture and Bush have nothing to do with this subject.
Homeless or not, and I think they used that term to garner headlines, they were apparently the only ones to come to the aid of the officer. A full restaurant and they were the only ones to help. Glad to read that those three gentlemen will be honored by the police. Even if they are homeless, apparently they had more respect, morals, and no worry about they're own safety to help. Hope someone in the Pompano Beach area will step up and offer to help these men with housing and jobs. I applaud these gentlemen for risking their lives to help.
Kinda reminds me of the video of the guy whole slid his bike and ended up under a car. Ordinary people on the street picked the car up and got the guy out, all the time being watched by a guy in a suit picking his nose. Heros come in all shapes sizes and social positions and should be recognize for their efforts.
xvet
Have you though the guy in the suit hada medical problem or something preventing him from helping? I have weak wrists, and couldn't help even if I wanted to. Get some facts to back up your statements, or don't say anything. It just makes you look, if not foolish, uninformed.
I really wish people would STOP stealing and shooting up courthouses and psych wards and schools!
1st, the old deputy is a little weakling, what a punk!
2nd, super strength always = drugs.
3rd, why didn't he use a taser/stun gun on the guy?
4th, these men need a HOME, not some piece of paper honoring them...probably a few of the many thrown out of their homes in foreclosure.
The deputy didn't use a taser because the taser is a weapon that has been unpredictable in the past. I don't know about him, but if I was in his shoes, I wouldn't want to shoot a guy with a taser and perhaps have him die on me. And what if the officer missed? That is a good way to enrage a guy.
Watch and listen to the video. He said he did use the taser. It had no effect.
Im just saying that cop needs to get in shape,he didnt take down a too lite to win guy, and almost got slammed. I aint no law, but i work out just in case I need to take down some fool who is out of control. All police should be held more accountable about their physical condition, cause the way it went down he is lucky he didnt get hurt.
They didn't actually know they were helping anyone....they saw the scrum and thought they were joining in on a mugging.....Imagine their surprise
You are not a good guy, denigrating them when the homeless guys that helped are heroes and should be accorded the respect they deserve!
Way to go guys! While all the other people sat there, you took action.
Cops have to understand once they lose the respect of the community, they are all alone out there. Some police depts and DA's seem to see only the enforcement side of the law, and believe that only with a heavy hand they can control the population. Sounds like this police dept is respected by all in their community, good for them.
