Authorities in western New York say they've charged four young Amish adults with illegal possession of alcohol after their buggy collided with a police car responding to a report of a drinking party under way.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that the crash occurred around 7:15 p.m. Sunday in the rural town of Sherman, near the Pennsylvania border in New York's southwest corner.
Officials say deputies were responding to reports that people were drinking in several Amish buggies on a country road.

As a patrol car arrived on the scene, one of the Amish buggies changed lanes, colliding with the police vehicle. The buggy flipped onto its side, causing minor injuries to one of the people on board.
Police say several other buggies fled the scene.

Ever since "Reality TV" came along, Amish communities will never be the same.
This is the best part.
And they couldnt catch them? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Can't wait to see the police dash cam video on World's Dumbest Drivers!
Poor horse..has to put up with these moron humans.
one of those buggies fleeing the scene just flew by me....musta been doin' 9 or even 10 MPH!!!
Beards were flappin in the wind, bonnets flyin' and everything!
What happened to the horses? They have more "horse sense" than the driver. . .
This Amish dude must have seriously offended his God to get such an instant karma punishment by hitting a squad car.
I wonder how the Miranda warning went. "Thou hast the right to remain silent...."
Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do....
This has got to be the FUNNIEST article on here in a loooonnnnngggg time!
Beautiful, denver bill
First of all, isn't drinking alcohol against the Amish religion, and, secondly, do you need a driver's license for a buggy? If not, how could they charge them with a DUI?
Maybe it was the horses that were drinking, and the horses fled the scene taking the Amish youths with them.
Those darn drunken horses, they always seem to get the Amish folks in trouble.
Jodeman - that's the part that got me. Thanks to MSNBC for some lighter and funnier news on a Monday morning! ; -)
Those were my thoughts too after immediately reading it. LOL
Mickey-1983943,
I would go read up on the laws about DUI before I made any comment. Your ignorance is woeful.
(Hint: You don't have to be driving a car to get a DUI)
Do you think maybe it is possible to get a DUI charge even if you are driving a car but don't have a license?
PS, In many states it is also illegal to be under the influence and walk on a state or national highway.
There is no centralized Amish culture, some drink, some don't. Some also grow their own tobacco to smoke.
The Airdog,
"Your ignorance is woeful."
That insult was totally uncalled for! I just asked a couple of questions. What does that have to do with my "ignorance"?
Todd and Republic,
Thanks for the response. I suspected it was against their religion but wasn't sure.
This is hysterical! This has to wind up in a movie, or episode of Family Guy!
"Several other buggies fled the scene" dang how fast can those things go? NASCAR look out.
I was thinking the same thing! I have to admit the whole story sounds funny as hell.
Just the thought of that scene stirs laughter!
They are much faster running that "Ethanol Blend"....
Too funny!
The buggies that got away must have had 2 horsepower rather than 1.
It was REAL horsepower, not this fake, mechanical kind
I find it highly amusing that it isn't a DUI, but I guess the laws don't cover non-motorized vehicles (although we've seen related charges for drunk driving everything from zambonis to recliners). I wonder what the DA would have done if there were injuries to another party...
That is pretty strange, people get DUI on bicycles fairly often. Maybe they only had the booze but hadn't drank any yet?
Maybe the horse was drunk ?
There was a guy in my hometown who got arrested for being drunk while riding his horse back from a bar. They got him for animal cruelty, rather than a DUI and he ended up losing his horse.
Crazy Amish folks, always acting like crazy fools in those buggies.
It's just the rebellious ones in the low-rider buggies with the spinners on the wheels.
Those kids will get the shunning of their lives.
Blame it on the horse.
Was it a Budweiser horse?
Yes. Sadder Bud-weiser.
Buggies fled the scene...? That got my best laugh of the day so far! Cutting off Elders' beards, drunk buggying...what's next?
Seriously though, I hope none of the horses were injured.
Crazy drunken shoe parties! Where they invite the girls' knickers down.
Sorry but this is toooo funny....
It's not funny seeing that one person got hurt and others could have been injured...that being said, this is certianly the chuckle of the day. I can picture the ones that "got away" LOL
Anyone see that buggy that went flyin by here? LOL!
The ticket should go to the horse.
Sounds like "The Wild One" except with Amish buggies vs motorcycles. Those Amish sure are a bad element.
Yes, now this story is a complete riot! I don't understand how a COP car couldn't catch a BUGGY??
My guess is maybe the cop decided not get into a high-speed chase.....I mean fast-trot chase.
Whoa, Nelly!!
The get away buggies probably cut through corn fields or cow pastures.
"But officer, we weren't actually driving the vehicle... HE WAS!", as they all pointed to the horse.
"Several other buggies fled the scene." Mwa-hah-ha!!! Funniest thing I've read today, hands down!
Wild buggy rides!! Sounds like a lot of fun, where is the next party, I will hitch up my mare and be there.
Yeah, there's no fun parties like that in my neighborhood....how do I get an invite?!
Oh gosh....another wild and crazy Amish story.
Amish Cops? I'm sending a proposal to FOX.
When it has anything to do with the Amish I have to read it. I live close to Berne, Indiana and it is nothing to see the Amish here drinking and smoking their cigarettes.
No descriptions of the suspects?
Straw hat, dark purple shirt, black pants, black coat, black shoes, seemed to respond to Hey Stoltzfuss..."
"...we're all just crazy Mennonites
living in an Amish paradise..."
Those Amish never could hold their liquor.
If only one patrol car responded I can complete understand why the buggies were able to "flee" the scene - the officer(s) in that car were occupied dealing with the buggy that was in the collision and the passengers from that buggy - they couldn't well take off in pursuit of the other buggies. Given the knowledge of the back roads likely possessed by the other buggy drivers, the speed at which they can travel (all kidding aside, they can travel fairly quickly when pressed) and the fact that in some rural areas "backup" can be many miles away on the other side of hte county it is not at all unreasonable that the others were able to get away.
this is the problem with these naughty Amish folks..give them a little freedom (beer)..and next thing you know they are out in their horse buggies causing total mayhem...when will they learn?..i think several months in the "stocks" or perhaps a stearn talking to is in order...we cannot allow these Amish to run rampant through the countryside..just too darn troublesome...lol..
I can see it now, Amish to enter NASCAR with latest buggy off the line..! YEE HAW..!
Rumspringa! Wooooooo!
