Cops: Losing coach bites off winner's ear

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A middle school basketball rivalry took a violent turn on Friday, after one losing coach bit off part of another coach’s ear, police said.

Police said the assistant coach of the losing team, Timothy Lee Forbes, 34, of Springfield, assaulted the coach of the winning team after a championship tournament game and bit off part of his ear.

Police received a report of a disturbance at the Holy Name School in Springfield during a sixth-grade boys' basketball game.

People at the game pulled Forbes off the coach, police said, and Forbes ran out of the gym before police arrived. The victim, a 34-year-old Springfield man, was rushed to the Baystate Medical Center in an ambulance to have his ear reattached. He has been released.

Forbes has been charged with mayhem, assault and battery and other charges. He will be arraigned on Monday afternoon in Springfield District Court.

Police said neither team is affiliated with the Holy Name School.

What the heck is wrong with "coaches" and why do suckers continue to worship them? Coach Bobby Knight's PMS temper tantrums... Sandusky's nude showers.... now Mr. Ear Biter. One quiet scientist in a medical research lab is worth ten million of these losers. henry_westin@hotmail.com

Westin-1802121 - Although I agree w/ what you are saying on principle I do have a counterpoint. First is it's very wrong to compare Bobby Knight w/ Jerry Sandusky. Second, Bobby Knight made millions of dollars for the institutions he coached at because sporting events generate revenue. The better the program, the bigger the name, the more money it makes. So when a successful sports teams makes those millions of dollars, sure Bobby Knight is well compensated, but where does the rest of that money go to? Back into the University where they build new residence halls (dorms) and upgrade medical research facilities w/ better equipment. The same facility your quiet scientist is working in.

Sports are very important, especially w/ young children. Obesity in this country is outrageous and sports is a great way to curve that trend. Sports help children learn a solid work ethic that can be extended far into life, especially when sports are gone and now you're just a medical researcher. The only way to have sports is w/ coaches. Most coaches are role models and teach kids to be responsible adults. Some do not but there are bad apples in everything, even in the medical research field. So, coaches serve their purpose and a lot of them earn the respect they receive.

Finally - did you really think that "Mr. Ear Biter" is worshiped? He is an assistant coach on a 6th grade basketball team. Get a clue...

Tech_man20 - We are not talking about about European Soccer games. We are talking about organized sports in America. I'll say this again though, everything has a negative, nothing is perfect. But in sports, the good out weighs the bad. Also, don't confuse murders w/ sports fans. I've been in many of opposing stadiums where I've received courtesy, good natured ribbing, and threatening comments. I have to say I've received much more of the first two. People who are willing to fight or kill in defense of a sports team are not actually doing it in defense of the sports team. They are doing it because there is something mentally wrong w/ them. Sane people do not kill in defense of their favorite team. Some insane people have the ability to kill, it's just what triggers that ability. I promise you that trigger is not the Cubs losing to the Cardinals, it's the lack of self control of rage.

          #1.46 - Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:19 AM EDT

As I have always said, competition arises out of a fear of lack. I remember the ruthlessness that was taught to me as a child, how important it is to "BEAT the other guy, kill the other team..." I was the too tall kid who wore glasses and (regardless of skill) was picked last for a team because my eyesight was (according to the "jocks") substandard. Well, there you have it, COMPETITION has the propensity for unlimited violence even to the point of death. Years later as an adult i drove school busses to "Friday Night Lights" or should it have been called "Friday Night Fights"?

          Remember Brian Stow...nuff said.

I really do not think alcohol had anything to do with 6th grade sports. You will find beer at the NBA, NFL and MLB stadiums and that usually causes the fans that have mental problems an excuse to act out. It in no way should affect the coaches or players unless they are taking a nip or two before the game or during half time. Sports is not the problem. It always boils down to idiots.

Sounds like perfect coaching material Downrange15! Both my sons played basketball and I have to say the coaches when they were in middleschool were all psychotic. There should be some kind of background check required for anyone wanting to coach minors.

Yet another adult with no business being around kids! I suspect that this behaviour did not come as a total surprise to people who know the guy. I hope the legal system throws the book at this guy--that will provide kids (and parents and other coaches) truly useful information about the importance of sportsmanship and personal accountability.

Yes indeed he needs to be accountable for his actions. It seems like he needs a psychological evaluation too. If he would do this in front of an entire gym full of kids and parents, just imagine what he must be like at home behind closed doors. If you are reading this and you are married to this man - NOW would be the time to seek help and get out of that abusive situation. Don't stay and let you or your children become the next persons to be harmed. Wow.

Forbes has been charged with mayhem

Don't hear that one very often anymore. While we use the term mayhem to describe whenever something crazy happens, the literal definition is for someone going around taking pieces of people's bodies off, say by biting in this case or with sword or other cutting implement.

Funny how parents get upset when their kids are in a gang but they still support school sports which teach basically the same thing - violence.
