Police: Four people stabbed, suspect shot in downtown Columbus, Ohio

Jay Laprete / AP

A member of the Columbus crime scene search unit investigates the scene where a man was shot by police after allegedly stabbing four people in an attack at a downtown office building.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man armed with three knives began a stabbing spree in the admissions office of a technical school in a downtown office building Wednesday, injuring four people, including an employee of the state attorney general, before being shot by a police officer, authorities said.

Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said the suspect confronted one victim in the admissions office of Miami-Jacobs Career College before 1 p.m. and stabbed him. He said other people intervened and took away a knife the suspect was using.

"We do know that one of the good Samaritans that came to aid the first victim — he was stabbed also," Weiner said.

Weiner said those who intervened didn't realize the suspect had other knives.

A female officer responding to a report of multiple stabbings at the college saw victims when she arrived on the scene. She confronted the suspect who was armed with two knives, one in each hand, NBC station WCMH reported, citing a police source. The suspect went toward the officer in a violent manner so she fired multiple shots. The officer was not injured.

Two of the victims were either students or staff at the privately run school, Weiner said. Two other victims were outside in the lobby area when they were attacked, he said. All the stabbings occurred on the first floor.

Three of the victims were taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, including a 53-year-old male who was reportedly stabbed in the face multiple times. One victim was transported to Mount Carmel West Medical Center with minor injuries.

Two of the victims were either students or staff at the privately run school, Weiner said. Two other victims were outside in the lobby area when they were attacked, he said. All the stabbings occurred on the first floor.

The suspect, the officer and the victims have not been identified.

Officers continue to question witnesses, including the officer who fired her service weapon, WCMH reported.

Nobody died except the attacker. If he had had a gun, the body count would have been much higher. Nice try, though.

That is not a fact but your opinion.......he could have been a terrible shot the gun could have jammed or the loud noise could have alerted everyone to run like hell before he got to them. Nice try, though.

We should ban guns from Police because she killed someone. Ban knives cause he stabbed 4. Ban autos cause he may have used it to get away. Ban gas to fuel the auto that could have helped him get away. Lets Ban Liberals for wanting to ban things they cannot control.

I say lets bring back manual labor. Everyone would be too tired to commit crimes. Damn them unions. We all now have cosy service jobs and too much pent-up energy.

@shandril,

Hiya! It's me again. Consider me the counterpoint to your point(?)....however narrow-minded.

So, four people are stabbed and LE has to use one of those nasty (should be governmentally decreed to take away) guns on the assailant....and you come up with 'If he had a gun, the body count would have been higher'? Wow....that certainly is some profound stuff. How's life going for ya with those blinders on?

I have observed through the years that the really sick, twisted people who finally snap and go on the rampage seem to gravitate toward knives...and one in each hand seems to be more the rule than the exception. The article didn't state whether the or not the perpetrator was clothed, but in many of the cases I'm familiar with (involving a crazed individual with a knife or knives who was shot by the police) the offender was also naked. Outdoors. And the offenders have been of both genders.

In these instances, there is usually a history of mental illness anyway, but drugs and alcohol (usually simultaneously) always seem to be a factor, too.

People are fascinating creatures, they do strange things.

Caesar I agree and most female officers do not like the time proven .45acp with its legendary stopping power.. Poor shots or a 9mm with ball ammo, golden sabre +p rounds are more expensive but are extremely lethal at close range.. We hate the nickle cases because they seem to jam more than the brass although the brass cases need to be kept cleaner.. The shame would be if the jag off lives then taxpayers will have to pay for the trial and prison cell along with the medical bills.. Looks like she unloaded a full clip on him because there is a cone with #15 on it and I know they usually use them to cover the frags.. Wonder if he was wearing a bullet proof vest, center mass with 3 or more rounds is 99% fatal and same for the thighs due to blood loss..

The suspect, the officer and the victims have not been identified.

If the author hadn't told me that I would never have known since they weren't in the article. BSNBC's attention to deatil astounds me. For example, they wanted to make sure you got the point:

Two of the victims were either students or staff at the privately run school, Weiner said. Two other victims were outside in the lobby area when they were attacked, he said. All the stabbings occured on the first floor.

That is why they put that paragraph in the article twice. They also wanted people to know that the private school has an outside lobby area. Doesn't that get a little cold in the middle of the winter when you are meeting somebody in the lobby?

Day after day I read of multiple killings across the U.S. .... and then I read these idiots preach how dangerous Mexico is ... don't vacation there ... on and on ... fools!!!

FBI Crime statistics show that violent crime in the US has been declining since 1993, with 2009 being the lowest homicide rate on record for 45 years.

Mexico's violent crime rate, on the other hand, has been exponentially increasing for years. Juarez Mexico has one of the highest murder rates in the entire world.

Murder rate per capita in Mexico: 18
Murder rate per capita in US: 4.8

So, you're saying that we should all visit Mexico, which has almost 4 times the murder rate of the US? WTF?

Why can't these cops shoot straight? The officer fired multiple times and the scumbag attacker is only in critical conditon?? Crissakes!

9mm... what can you do? That's why the FBI recently switched back to the .45 -- more reliable stopping power.

I did get it right. If you are not a nut with a gun this does not apply to you now does it?! Are you a nut with a gun? Is that why you are trying to say something? Btw, I am a responsible gun owner too and I don't mind if more gun control laws are put into effect if it will stop one gun nut from killing innocent people.

"Besides the gun toting gun nut wouldn't even get a chance to shoot my love ones, because yes, I do have some gun control, the fact that I can control my gun enough for the bullet to hit its mark."

How about this one to go up against your Va Tech one:

“Guns in America: National Survey on Private Ownership and Use of Firearms,” by the Clinton administration’s Justice Department shows that between 1.5 and 3 million people in the United States use a firearm to defend themselves and others from criminals each year.

Yep, 1.5 to 3 MILLION people a YEAR defend themselves with a firearm. Strange that you don't read a lot of stories about them but let one person do something stupid and BLAM! All over the news so you anti-gun types can claim how prevalent and how terrible the gun problem is. Well, without their firearms you might have gotten to add over a million people to your list of victims to balance out the handful killed by people who legally own firearms.

Will this never end?! Everyday there is an attack at a school or courthouse, stores, malls, or at a university...........

Oh! just saw where there was also a shooting of four people at a courthouse. OMG! its becoming the act of choice now for some wackos to kill anyone they feel has wronged them as well as bystanders.

I guess we should all start wearing body armor where ever we go.

Only anti-gun nutz would rightfully think gun laws would not be broken by law breakers.

nra member-What do most schools and courthouses have in common? A lot are GUN-FREE ZONES!

Who in their right mind actually thought that criminals intent on murder would leave their guns at the door when entering so-called gun-free zones??

Excuse me, but nowhere in my post did I even imply what you are saying. What is wrong with you and punisher?! you guys are wacko! I believe it is our right to own guns, I own guns, but I don't mind some control of that right if it stops just one of these murders from happening. Now argue against that!

And don't list that old piece of crap about the gov. taking our guns away. I've heard that for 40+ years and I it still has not happened, but it does sell a lot of guns does it not?

Being an nra member, maybe you can tell us all why the nra supports citizens buying armor piercing bullets?

Hey trebor #17, I know its off the subject a bit, but since you're wondering ab. left wing liberals calling for the banning of knives, I wonder, maybe you can tell me when the NRA will stop supporting the sale of armor piercing bullets to the public? Are they afraid the our gov. will send tanks against us?= Paranoid delusional. I have a bro-in-law who has been burying some of his guns in his backyards (he's moved 6 times in the past 40 years) because he swears our gov. is going to come and take all of our guns away. He's been saying this for 40 yrs. as well. Btw, I'm your worst nightmare. I'm a gun toting liberal.

Congressional Research Service summary of HR 3132 enacted into law in 1986 and supported by the NRA.

Amends the Federal criminal code to define "armor-piercing ammunition as projectiles constructed from specified material which may be used in handguns. Excludes from the definition: (1) shotgun shot required by Federal or State regulations for hunting; (2) frangible projectiles for target shooting; or (3) projectiles that the Secretary of the Treasury determines are primarily intended for sporting purposes or industrial use.

Makes it unlawful for any person to manufacture or import armor-piercing ammunition. Allows for: (1) the manufacture or importation of armor-piercing ammunition for the use of the United States or any State or local government; (2) the manufacture for the sole purpose of exportation; and (3) the manufacture or importation for testing or experimentation authorized by the Secretary. Allows for the sale and delivery of armor-piercing ammunition for these purposes.

I wonder when people that make up crap about the NRA and firearms laws will actually take the time to educate themselves before they say something.

depends on the situation wouldn't you say? or perhaps the location when it comes to handcuffs...........:)

Good job, Officer. I think the media tried to make a point out of the fact that you are a female Officer by saying that you fired "multiple shots", as if to imply that you are not as good a shot as your male counterparts ... I am glad you fired multiple shots. You should have pumped about another 60 or 80 pounds of lead into his butt. Make him heavy enough that the coroner would have needed a front loader to move his dumb ass. Good job!

Let this be a lesson to people: fighting some crazy knife wielding conservative nut job is not like having a high school fight in the parking lot, when you are faced with those kinds of people kill them. Good people always hesitate to kill someone, but the other person is dead set on killing you.

This is why evil people always get the jump on good people.
