Exhaustion blamed for 'irrational' behavior by 'Kony 2012' filmmaker

A San Diego police spokesperson tells NBC about the circumstances leading up the temporary detainment of a man who had been interfering with nearby traffic.

Jason Russell, co-founder of and director of Invisible Children.

Updated Saturday 12:00 p.m. ET: SAN DIEGO – The maker of an Internet film gone viral that calls for the arrest of Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony has been hospitalized in California following an "unfortunate incident" that his group and family said on Friday stemmed from the emotional toll of recent weeks.

Jason Russell, director of the 30-minute "Kony 2012" video and co-founder of the group Invisible Children, was hospitalized on Thursday for "exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition," Invisible Children CEO Ben Keesey said in a statement.

"The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday," Keesey said, without providing further details.

"Jason's passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue," he said.

Russell "did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration," his wife said Friday night, a day after he was detained over reports of a man masturbating and acting strangely, NBC News reported.

Danica Russell, in a family statement obtained by NBC News, suggested sudden attention and criticism of the film may have led to her husband's behavior.

"We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it," Danica Russell said. "While that attention was great for raising awareness about Joseph Kony, it also brought a lot of attention to Jason -- and, because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard.

She denied her husband had substance abuse or drinking problems.

"On our end the focus remains only on his health, and protecting our family. We'll take care of Jason, you take care of the work. The message of the film remains the same: stop at nothing," she added.

Earlier, NBCSanDiego.com reported police Lt. Andra Brown as saying that Jason Russell, 33, was detained by police Thursday in the Pacific Beach neighborhood.

"The San Diego Police Department received several calls that he was acting bizarrely, running into traffic, interfering with traffic, yelling," Brown said.

She said officers detained the man, who according to witnesses was in "various stages of undress," but did not arrest him after determining that it was more appropriate to transport him to a medical facility. She declined to name him.

Brown said police responded to reports in the Pacific Beach area of a man in his underwear, running in the street and screaming. Some people reported they had seen the man masturbating, Brown told msnbc.com.

The man was detained by officers and then taken to a local medical facility for evaluation and treatment, Brown told msnbc.com.

Russell is one of the founders responsible for the "KONY 2012" video that went viral last week. He is described on the organization's website as a co-founder and "our grand storyteller and dreamer." Russell is also described as a Christian and father to two children who wants to have nine more children with his wife he calls his "best friend for over 23 years."

The video of alleged child atrocities by Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony has been viewed more than 100 million times on the Internet. The 30-minute YouTube film aims to wake up the world to atrocities committed by Kony's Lord's Resistance Army, including kidnapping children and forcing them to fight.

Invisible Children tapped 12 influential policy makers and 20 celebrities with popular Twitter accounts, including Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie, to spread the video.

The phenomenal success of the video, including the savvy media campaign with tweets about Kony, has been hailed for inspiring young people to activism, but has suffered some criticism including that it oversimplified a long-standing human rights crisis.

In an interview with MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell, Jason Russell discusses the Invisible Children campaign.

Russell, who narrates the video with a personal story that juxtaposes shots of his young son in San Diego with the hopelessness of Ugandan children, told Reuters last week the video was only meant as a kick-starter to a complicated issue.

"It definitely oversimplifies the issue. This video is not the answer, it's just the gateway into the conversation. And we made it quick and oversimplified on purpose," he said. "We are proud that it is simple. We like that. And we want you to keep investigating, we want you to read the history."

This guy and his charity are frauds. Very little of the money they collect goes towards any charitable efforts. Most of it is use to raise more money and to pay the salaries and world travel excursions of the charity board members.

Oh please, not the "twinkie" defense, again.

Actually, I thought he was hospitalized due to extreme embarrassment being caught masturbating in public. I mean, something like that WILL create stress don't you know.

So beyond strange, I don't even know where to start. I have two theories.

1. Bipolar disorder. If thats the case, poor basterd.... bipolar strikes some of the most intelligent people, and can bring a person to great heights of success, and then send them crashing down into poverty and ruin just as quickly. Its a vicious illness.

2. Some shadowy people with a whole lot of power really don't like the idea of this whole "social networking for change" thing getting any traction, and decided it was time to do something about it. Perhaps they decided a little scandal would help to put a wet blanket over the whole thing. A little special secret government-made crazy-making pill added to someone's bottled water perhaps...

Im putting my money on bipolar though. It seems like the more logical thing.

Did you really lump this unbalanced exhibitionist and auto-eroticator (who, in other venues and media, would receive accolades for his "free-spiritedness") in with homosexuals? I would figure you would demonstrate a more discerning degree of support for homosexuals.

Rene - it sure as heck does work that way. Questionable research nothing. It sure as heck does work that way. I have it in my family, and I have friends that have it in theirs. Bipolar episodes can cause very irrational behavior, and law enforcement is trained to look out for that, and for schizophrenia. Thats why this fellow was "detained" and not charged (yet) and why he was put into medical care. I can almost guarantee this is going to boil down to be a manic episode. Even the family mentions in the article there have been "issues". But Rene - what is YOUR experience to be being such a twit regarding my comment? Do tell what your voluminous experience with bipolar is... Id love to hear it. As for research, I suggest you read "Touched with Fire" as well as "An Unquiet Mind" both by Kay Redfield Jamison. Your OWN lack of research shows through in your petulant little post.

The true lesson of this story is that the game has changed.

Making videos was - not so long ago - in the realm of the wealthy and connected. Whomsoever controlled access to information was in charge.

Times have changed. Each individual now has the same power. Information has become readily available outside of the realm of the traditional power brokers. This is a landscape change, and nobody has really figured out what to do about it ~ or with it.

My 'petulance' is both research and experience. I am bipolar. So are many members of my family, but my experience is my own. I have had more than my share of manic episodes and they do not manifest themselves in that manner. "Manic" does not mean "Maniacal". While it is possible that this person is bipolar, something else also contributed to this; possibly something pharmaceutical. That is not a manic episode alone, and his behavior is beyond irrational. Not every incident like this can be attributed to mental illness; he could have just been on a bad trip. And let me assure you, the experience is far different then your 'expert' analysis... something most 'experts' will never understand as much as they want to appear to.

what he did could actually be a manifestation of mania, on the cusp of delusion. What applies to you doesn't apply to everyone. would they make medications that only applied to YOUR symptoms?

I have seen first hand bipolar mania and I would not be surprised to find that he suffers from this illness. Untreated bipolar mania can lead to psychotic episodes, which can look an awful lot like schizophrenia. In my experience, there is a lot of paranoia. Luckily it is treatable.

          #1.49 - Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:18 PM EDT

Rene -Your experience is not everyone else's. Glad you haven't had manic events that have been so bad that you didn't even remember what you did - but there are those that have manic events so extreme that psychosis and hallucinations also become part of the episode. Your research is pretty light, if you haven't come across case studies of manic events of this nature. And YES, Rene - the word "manic" DOES mean maniacal. Maniac, mania, maniacal ALL are rooted to the ancient Greek maniae or mania. Look it up, you can even wiki it. Easiest research you can ever do. Also, where do you get that people automatically assume it is mental illness? Seems YOU and most everyone else - are assuming its drug induced, and some homosexual methamphetamine thing!

Something tells me you're taking this all a bit too personally. As someone who suffers from bipolar disorder (I am assuming you know the difference between Type I and Type II, and that this level of mania would be associated with Type I BPD), I would think you would be wondering the same thing (if this was a manic event) about this situation. All I can tell you, is read Kay Redfield Jamison's works. She is in the forefront of BPD research, and you didn't even bother to acknowledge that I mentioned her works in my last post, which tells me your research is limited.

I am so sick of people blaming bipolar on this. do you quack psychologists know how many mental illnesses there are? Bipolar is probably the last one a knowledgable person would blame for this.

You people who are not bipolar have the same risk of doing what russell did as a bipolar person. so stfu

so stop smearing those of us who do have bipolar and stop pretending you know anything.

The guy is sick but bipolar didnt do this.

rich - why in GOD's name do you think I am smearing people with bipolar disorder? I am no more smearing people with BPD than I am people with heart disease if we were discussing a heart attack.

Manic episodes are dysfunction. They are sometimes extreme, and that is why Manic episodes are considered ILLNESS. Because they affect an individual's ability to function! Exhaustion is a classic symptom of the manic events of bipolar. The individual experiencing the event may not FEEL exhausted, and from the brief video clip of this poor man's break making the rounds now, this is clearly not a man bereft of physical energy. Getting a few hours of sleep a day (classic manic symptom) takes its toll on the mind, making the mania worse.

Theres no guarantee that this was BPD associated mania. If it wasn't BPD mania, and it wasn't drugs (family insists theres no substance abuse issues), it still is some form of mental illness, because one thing that is clear, this is not the behavior of a sane individual. Schizophrenia is so disruptive and the symptoms so without pause, that people can rarely function at a high level (like coordinating a grass-roots action campaign). Psychotic breaks are associated with SOME form of mental illness. Bipolar fits. BPD individuals are often highly functioning and very charismatic, especially before the manic episode passes that threshold between energetic and charismatic to frenetic and maniacal.

Some of the most talented people throughout history have been cursed with bipolar disorder. Scientists have found a high correlation between bipolar and high intelligence. the term "mad scientist" has its roots in the fact that some of the most genius people have also been some of the more eccentric and prone to bouts of "madness".

And rich, I sure do know how many mental illnesses there are, as well as variants of those illnesses. I do also know that there are a few that are much more prevalent and that mental illness diagnoses are frequently co-morbid, that is, occurring together.

I dont need to pretend that I know anything. Now both you and rene have come here to tell us we don't know anything about it, but both of you have failed to point out where we are wrong, and to offer correcting information. But rich, you REALLY need to stop projecting your own discomfort with your illness on the discussions of it. Theres no "smearing" coming from this direction.

In fact, I entered into this conversation to try to bring some empathy to the situation, since the conversation was going towards pedopheliac homosexual on a meth fueled psychotic trip. Do you really think thats a fair thing to pin on someone who may very well be experiencing a manic event??

Its possible this was a drug induced psychotic break. But I would prefer giving the man the benefit of the doubt in that perhaps he was experiencing a manic event. This is not a smear, it is an attempt to reorient conversation away from damning judgment on a man that might be experiencing an episode of mania associated with BPD I.

I suggest you too, read "Touched with Fire" by Kay Redfield Jamison, and/or "An Unquiet Mind".

Hello folks, it is unfortunate that this person had a meltdown. This should also give one pause to understand the nature of the 2012 Kony propaganda. This has always been about oil. Kony 2012 was designed to gather support so that the military Africom unit could go in to central Africa and secure the oil resources for the Oil cartels. Enclosed is an article that came out a few years back stating that the largest inland oil find in Africa is in Uganda. Right now France, China, Russia and the U.S. are competing for this oil.

Fresh Uganda Oil Find ‘Africa’s Biggest’

          By The Times

14 Jan 2009 "The Times" - -Heritage Oil announced details of a large oil discovery in Uganda yesterday, which the company claimed could be the largest onshore discovery in sub-Saharan Africa.

Heritage said that its latest discovery – Giraffe1 – in the Lake Albert region, could total at least 400 million barrels of oil.

However, Paul Atherton, chief financial officer, told The Times that the wider field it was developing, dubbed Buffalo-Giraffe, had several “billions of barrels of oil in place”, although it was unclear how much of this would be recoverable.

He said that the field, which is 9,000 square kilometers in size – or six times the size of Greater London – was unquestionably the largest onshore discovery made in sub-Saharan Africa in at least 20 years, possibly ever.

Mr Atherton said that of the 18 wells the company had drilled in the basin so far, all had produced oil. “Clearly the entire basin is full of oil,” he said. “It’s a world-class discovery, the most exciting new basin in Africa in decades.”

Previously, the largest onshore fields discovered in sub-Saharan Africa were at Rabi-Kounga in Gabon, where 900 million barrels were found in 1985, and at Kome in Chad, where 485 million barrels were found in 1977.

Mr Atherton said that it would take at least another three years to start commercial production. The crude could be exported by road or rail, he said, but analysts believe that the most practical solution would be to build an 806-mile pipeline to take it to Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and then the Kenyan coast. The pipeline would need to be heated and designed to traverse swampy and mountainous land. It would cost an estimated $1.5 billion (£1 billion) to complete.

Heritage and its partner Tullow Oil, which also has a 50 per cent equity stake in the project, would need to demonstrate that the field could produce at least 400 million barrels of oil to justify the cost of building such a pipeline. Richard Griffith, an Evolution Securities analyst, said the latest discovery “thrashed” this commerciality threshold.

See Also - Uganda : Pressure Mounts To Make Public Oil Agreements:Uganda's oil discovery is already attracting major players like Italian oil giant Eni Spa, U.S. Exxon Mobil, France's Total and of recent the China National Offshore Oil Company. The country does not have the funds to finance the production of oil and instead signed agreements with oil giants spelling out how the revenue will be shared with investors willing to fund the production phase. The companies will build an oil refinery in Uganda and an oil pipeline to the Indian Ocean. This will enable the landlocked country to sell its estimated two billion barrels of crude oil internationally

Uganda's oil contracts leaked - a bad deal made worse: The repeated claims by the Ugandan government and the oil companies that Uganda has received a very good deal and the best in the region are not only a fiction, but were reliant on the real terms of the contracts being kept secret. While the contracts will deliver vast profits to Tullow Oil and Heritage Oil, the contracts will prevent the Ugandan people from receiving their due benefits.

It would not surprise me if the guy had been drugged!

Yes, there are people in power who would not like to see us the people be the master of our own destiny, us the people be able see through our politicians, us the people be able to make a sense of what is going on in this world.

There are those who do not want you and me to know more than what is necessary. They know our habits, our knowledge of the world (which is not much), our way of thinking (which is limited to the box), what makes us angry and what makes us happy, satisfied, scared... They do that through the movies we watch, through the series, documentaries... They've made us a nation of fat assess and lazy butts. They want us to let them to think for us, as long as we let them to reap us!

They don't want us to read and learn, they will do it for you!

Please, it's not about oil. Everything everywhere is about oil to some people.

Well, this is about a young man who has a form of mental illness. He shows strong signs of bipolar episodes or, possibly, some type of personality disorder. He is well-intentioned, but was unprepared for criticism of what he thought would be a universally acceptable goal of ending terrible atrocities against children and families.

With treatment he can get manage this illness and continue his work. I'd be willing to bet most of the people laughing about his misfortune had no more comprehension of what was taking place in Uganda than they have of astrophysics. At least Jason Russell has raised the international consciousness of Kony's despicable actions and gotten the conversation started.

How many of you would have the guts to walk out of a hospital with your heads held high after an incident like this? I certainly hope he does. Mental illness should not be shameful. Anyone who callously treats this man's misfortune at the publicity surrounding his breakdown should be ashamed.

          Srengthinnumberrs.

No one makes ANY diagnosis WITHOUt SEEING the person or knowing ANYTHING about the person and you did that. And in doing so you brought up bipolar. you also did not mention ANY incidents that any bipolar person has done that equal taking off their clothes on a busy street and acting like an ape. That is not the manic behavior associated w/ bipolar.

It is however associated with OTHER mental illnesses but you sure as heck did NOT bring them up.

you are a quack who smeared bipolar disorder. nothing more dangerous than an arm chair '"doctor"

"....Kony 2012 is a corporate-style PR and psy-ops campaign, a cynical hoax engineered to justify US and Western military intervention to control the incredibly lucrative oil, mineral, water and strategic resources of the heart of Africa."

Social Media Scam Alert: Top Ten Ways to Tell Kony is Phony

          Wed, 03/14/2012 - 10:44 — Bruce A. Dixon

by BAR managing editor Bruce A. Dixon

Thanks to relentless promotion by corporate media, government, celebrities and politicians of both corporate parties, along with right wing church groups and foundations, the Kony 2012 video has “gone viral.” Viewed on YouTube more than a hundred million times by now, it paints a vivid and simple picture, clear enough, its narrator says, for a five year old. But is it real, or is it propaganda, and for what purpose?

Joseph Kony, the Invisible Children YouTube video tells us, is a bad guy in Uganda. He's a lawless warlord leading something called the Lord's Resistance Army, which kidnaps, enslaves and murders innocent children by the tens of thousands. We're never told exactly why, as corporate media simply paint Africa as a hellish and inexplicable place where things like that just happen. The Ugandan government, the video tells us, would gladly shut Joseph Kony down and bring him to justice if only the US would provide the advanced weapons, sophisticated tracking gear, military training and the boots on the ground to help get it done. To make this happen, all that Kony 2012's promoters ask of us is to help spread “awareness” of Uganda's “invisible” child soldiers by facebooking, tweeting and repeating the Kony 2012 video, and by emailing influential politicians and the one-name celebrities like Oprah, Bono, Rhianna, Cosby and Lady Gaga (OK, Lady Gaga is two names) to whom they listen. The Kony 2012 video aims to bring this criminal child-enslaving Ugandan warlord to justice by enlisting tens of millions of us little people in making Kony's name an odious household word around the planet, after which Washington DC will stretch forth its military arm to bring Joseph Kony, alive if possible, before the International Criminal Court for trial and punishment.

Almost everything is wrong with this simple picture, from the missing histories and the hidden motives of storytellers and players to false statements of processes and problems real and unreal on both sides of the Atlantic. In fact, Kony 2012 is not a search for justice. Kony 2012 is a corporate-style PR and psy-ops campaign, a cynical hoax engineered to justify US and Western military intervention to control the incredibly lucrative oil, mineral, water and strategic resources of the heart of Africa. The kind of social media activism the video promotes is calculated to make Americans feel good about themselves for "spreading awareness" of child soldiering when they're really spreading racist ignorance and disinformation, building a disinformed public consent for ongoing, open and direct, as opposed to covert and indirect US military intervention in Africa. "Don't study history" the video's makers tell us --- "make history!" But the history that a lied to and disinformed public makes is bound to not be pretty.

Black Agenda Report is far from the first or the only news source to point that Kony 2012 is a warmongering hoax, and we certainly won't be the last. As our contribution, we here offer our top ten reasons why Kony is phony.

Reason #10: Invisible Children is funded by a core of notorious right wing donors including the Discovery Institute, which Bruce Wilson fingered in a March 11 Talk 2 Action piece as the leading funder of efforts to promote the replacement of biological sciences in schools with “intelligent design,”along with the Caster Foundation and the National Christian Foundation, all prominent backers of anti-gay referenda, politicians and initiatives in the United States and around the world. The Ugandan regime of Yoweri Museveni is a favorite of theirs for having passed legislation making it a criminal offense to be gay, punishable by a life sentence. Credible African journalists like Keith Harmon Snow have also alleged that Invisible Children’s white and male leaders have direct personal connections to US intelligence agencies….

Wow. So many theories from so many people. Bipolar, schizophrenia, right-wing Christian, hopped up on meth, vast right or left wing conspiracy, an on and on and on. Perhaps the dude just went out and got drunk and decided to clean his pipe. Drunk people do stupid and crazy things. It is, however, reassuring to know that when I do something stupid and crazy, everyone will do their level best to find a medical, psychological, emotional, economical, or societal issue to blame so that I will not be responsible.

Oh my Lord! Please do not allow our media to misdirect our minds like this. Now you see the invisible children again? They are what is important! This guy will be fine I am sure - whatever the root of his episode was. It does not matter where we get our information - as long as it is TRUE. Knowledge is power so let's use this new knowledge to help these kids who are being forced into prostitution and slavery. Hey, maybe that was his spiritual way of saying "See my children now WORLD!" Call it "body language".

                #1.63 - Sat Mar 17, 2012 1:48 PM EDT

donn - when you do something stupid and crazy, everyone who does know you WILL do their level best to find a reason - finding a reason does not equal placing blame, and it does not equal seeking a reason for abrogation. It does however equal the human tendency to want to understand so they can make informed decisions going forward, on how to help, or how to punish. and donn - you can bet if you reach celebrity status, the discussion of any odd behavior will go beyond friends and family and into the mainstream media. Thats just how it works. This is a place for discussion. No discussion, no forum. THATS a no-brainer.

and rich, who made a diagnosis? I don't have any medical pad here - I am making assumptions. And assumptions only make asses out of you and me if we act on them. No actions here - just discussion. Diagnosis... get real.

I could bring up several episodes of mania that I have personal knowledge of, but quite frankly, thats not anyone's business except family and practitioners.

Manic episodes dont fit one particular pattern. Theres the stereotypical gambling spree, sexual indiscretions (and masturbation in public is sure as heck one of those), and the shopping spree - but theres all KINDS of manifestations, as varied as personalities are. But one thing they all have in common, is the average person walking down the street is likely to notice that something aint quite right!

one last thing - Im finished arguing my point with you. Feel free to lambaste me and everyone else for daring to bring up bipolar as though it is the "illness that must not be mentioned".

Glad you haven't had manic events that have been so bad that you didn't even remember what you did -

I have, but those are called dissociative episodes, not manic.

And Rich was not saying it shouldn't be mentioned, he was saying people should not go around assuming someone is bipolar with an incident like this.

Theres the stereotypical gambling spree, sexual indiscretions

Hypersexuality and public masturbation are entirely different behaviors and not even comparable.

You are totally full of it.

Never mind that male children are being forced into being a soldier, that female children are being forced into being sex slaves, that the parents of these children are being murdered, with the women being raped before being killed. I guess you would say that same garbage about Sam Childers (aka Machine Gun Preacher) who has been doing Christian Charity work with Sudanese orphans since 1992. Yep, everything done by Americans outside of North America concerning any other country is because of and based on the greed for oil. Can't stand people who can only see one color, hear one language, and think inside one box.

Anyone who thinks that this whole Africa-humanitarian mission is not about consolidating control of natural resources is completely and hopelessly snowed. Joseph Kony DOES exist. He has been non-communicado since 2006 and is definitely NOT in Uganda, according t all I've read so far.

It is funny that there is so much outrage about the issue of Uganda violation of human rights all of a sudden... Where was all the outrage over Idi Amin. No. No outrage. Anybody remember Jack Abramoff and the Reagan admin. inspired freedom fighters against communism. We, the United States were SUPPORTING these anti-human agendas.

Seriously , a lot of bi polar people, when in a manic episode, after not eating or sleeping well, undress in public, try to stop traffic, etc. I don't know what it is, maybe invincibility or feeling strong or something. But lots of bipolar and /schizoaffective people do strip and go into traffic. My ex, was a long distance truck driver, and when he would drive, he wouldn't stop to eat, or sleep. And within days, he would be in a full blown manic psychotic episode. He didn't undress, thankfully, but he believed he was being followed by the government because he was bionic. Hope he gets the help he needs.

To all who keep using the word "fraud". I would really REALLY love to know, WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR FACTS? Is this an assumption of yours, something you read in the papers, did a friend tell you this? Why does every thing good have to morph into something evil. Can't we EVER just see something for what it is, in it's purest form? It's called HUMANITY! Here we have someone going to great lengths to make a POSITIVE change in the world, something that 9 out of 10 of us couldn't fathom, and instead of joining in to help the cause or, gee I don't know, give him a pat on the back for showing such compassion and actually doing something about it, we all just sit safely behind our computers and just blog a bunch of nonsensical crap because it makes us feel so good to tear others down. It makes us feel so uneasy to think there's actually someone out there, or something, that wants to better the world, and not just for money. So we just can't believe it. We have to write mean remarks and join in the name calling because that's what makes us happy. Being mean. Having no faith in humanity. Hope I never have a cure for cancer, that would just make me the devil now wouldn't it!

Thank you Jason Russell for trying to change our world for the better. You deserve great things in life and PLEASE DON'T LET THESE NEGATIVE, MISERABLE, HATEFUL, ASSUMING BEFORE THEY KNOW THE FACTS, NINCANPOOPS GET YOU DOWN!

                      Dear Famous Ainus,

Don't let the facts about Uganda, Joseph Kony, and the "Invisible Children" so-called charity get in the way of your feel-good propaganda.

There is nothing hateful about telling the truth about the world powers' agenda on the African continent, and guess what, there is nothing "humanitarian" about the neo-colonialist consolidation of natural resources. Or had you simply not heard about Africa before watching a propaganda film carefully designed to sway the opinions of gullible Amerikans? The "legitimate" government of Uganda is just as terrible. Furthermore, what is it you really think that NATO is going to do there; not murder and rape? (because that would REALLY be something new)...

As for Jason Russell, who effing cares.

I'm not going to believe that this nut case somehow opened up a story that none of the best news agencies in the world could. I am 100% confident this Kony guy doesn't exist, and have been since I saw that poorly written video.

Have you ever taken a history class COF???? I learned about this guy 3 years ago via my history class in high school....And just because they didn't get a lot of people to send them money, doesn't mean they didn't get people involved, people are broke right now(most people any way) so we have to make do by making our stuff to help the cause. I'm saving up to buy a shrinky-dinks kit so I can make my own bracelets, and my friend and a group she got together are making hand drawn signs to put up around their town on April 20th. And by the way, the "poor" quality of the video writing might be caused by the fact that this guy made it himself and he probably didn't have enough to pay for some one to write it for him like some lazy tv people do.

But now they'll mostly be talking about him, and just as many concluded years ago that PewWee's Playhouse couldn't possibly be a good show, after all the guy who made it was a pervert, now many will think that this doesn't need to be dealt with in any way, after all the guy making all of the fuss about it is a perv ...

In November 2008, U.S. President George W. Bush personally signed the directive to the United States Africa Command to provide assistance financially and logistically to the Ugandan government during the unsuccessful Garamba Offensive, code-named Operation Lightning Thunder. No US troops were directly involved, but 17 US advisers and analysts provided intelligence, equipment, and fuel to Ugandan military counterparts. The offensive pushed Kony from his jungle camp, but he was not captured. One hundred children were rescued.

just because the guy is a freak doesnt mean that the things in the video arent true or any less important that would be like someone who promotes freedom in a country that has civil rights issues got caught having sex with a dog doesnt make that countries civil rights issues less important

Well, good point I guess. I think I'll hold out for more information on this one. Why would someone who needs a good public image go out and humiliate himself in public, with a bunch of pointless petty crimes? It seems so random! I don't know, I just have trouble believing it.

It may not make the things in the film not true but it certainly makes you rethink a choice of donating money towards the organization.

Its unbelievable how uninformed people are of what is actually happening with Kony and the LRA. Kony is no longer in Uganda. The Ugandan people have pushed him out. He was a dark part of history until this Kony 2012 BS came up and thrust this maniacal monster back into the spotlight. Not to mention many of the points made in Kony 2012 are highly debatable and some are borderline lies.

If you want to help the victims of Kony and the LRA, there are much better non-profits to donate to. Invisible Children Inc only donates about 30% of the proceeds to actual people. The rest is used for salaries, travel and production costs for their movies. Check out their BBB rating. They haven't even divulged enough information for the Better Business Bureau and Charity Navigator to be able to clear them as a proper charity.

Your right but ppl are idiots and bad news travels fast. It doesnt make the things in the video not true or less important but this ruins him and that whole charity. And your also wrong cause if Martin Luther King would have butt f***ed some puppy or pulled his c**k out in public at the height of his popularity the Civil Rights movement would have been just as important but it definitely would have been hurt by it severely

Well, it's always best to keep both hands busy. At home, he probably had his TV remote in his other hand. In his car, all he could find was a jack-handle. So, he put it to work...

Who is protecting the children that this weirdo is purported to be helping. If it is true that he was caught in Balboa Park then that is sick. This location is known as the fruit loop and is where runaway children go to make money servicing pigs.

There were a number of charities out in the '90s helping the Kony victims. These guys created this charity for, I suspect, some other end - money, fame, etc, etc. Kony was being helped by Sudan all along - he was nothing more than a tool to de-stabilize Ethiopia. To call Kony a pig would be insulting pigs!!!

Wow, I love how you all assume that the only way to help the cause is to give people money. I'm not giving them any money, cuz I'm broke, but I'm still going to get the word out by making my own bracelets to give away for free. This shouldn't be about money, this is about helping people.

It's something that some guy with too much free time and a video camera made up because I guess he figured creating one villain would help get people to rally around an equally horrible villain.

Which in his defense the Republicans and Democrats have been doing that for quite some time with a lot of success.

I found it funny that those who watched the KONY2012 video suddenly became social activists.

Another reason why the video was made was so that the US Government wouldn't withdraw the military advisers that are over in Uganda right now, but supposedly, the government never intended to call the advisers back soon.

Honestly, the US shouldn't get involved in hunting Kony, since we don't even know if he's alive. It's bad how people live in constant war in Africa, I get it. Should we really be putting ourselves in the middle of all of it? If Invisible Children wants to catch Kony, then why don't THEY go and look for him themselves? With all the money they make, I'm sure they'd have no problem catching him.

What goals? How does watching a video REALLY help?
Is Kony the worst thing in the world, and how many more of our US troops should be out there trying to find him?

It's similar to "forward this if you like cute kittens" (with the implied threat that if you do not, you hate kittens).

Tommy Boy - he only has two kids - is it wrong to say he wants 9 more kids? This isn't China. I've got one and want a couple more, but I'm 46 and can't afford them, so it ain't happening. He has been with his wife for 23 years - do the math - he is not having 9 more kids (with her anyway). If he can take care of them (mental instability aside), why do you care?

                                                              Clooney got arrested today...

Say how much he worries about all of the poor of the world after seeing his big Italian villa, which would feed entire villages. Somehow the rich who admit that they are really in it for what's in it for them strike me as better, or at least less hypocritical.

                                                                  #27.3 - Fri Mar 16, 2012 11:29 PM EDT

Rlquall, get a clue! Do you know how many millions George donates to causes like this? Do you think someone else is paying him to fly himself and camera crews across the world putting himself in harms way to bring attention to these atrocities? You obviously seem to think he's in it for some sort of personal gain. What could he possibly gain? Fame? Seriously? There are few people in this world more famous than him! His wealth and his fame are exactly what allow him to help give to, and bring attention to this and other worthy causes. He's not a monk! He doesn't need to take a vow of poverty to care about his fellow man or speak out against crimes against humanity.

That being said, I know little about this Mr. Russel, but I seriously doubt he was running in the streets whacking off. I think it's much more likely that was just an exageration of the events from someone immediately thinking "PERVERT" because they saw a man running around in his underwear. People have nervous breakdowns all the time, people with less stress and under less scrutiny, as well as people under an even brighter spotlight than him. It does not mean they are psychotic, or evil, or perverted or any better or worse than anyone else. The man was temporarily detained by the police, not arrested, so although obviously distraught, he commited no crime.

Most of all, lets not forget what this is all about! This video is not a solution to the problem, nor was it meant to be. At was to bring this man Kony to the attention of as many citizens of the world as possible. It was a social experiment in a sense, to see if the the internet could be used as a means bring this Kony and his crimes to the attention of millions as effectively as, for example, SNL's Dick in a Box Skit". No offense Justin, love ya! It was basicly a test to see if a viral video can bring, or at least ensite a "100 million strong" cry for International Justice. I also don't believe Mr. Russel ever claimed that donations to his organization were to hire an army, or form an escape effort, or for doctors or teachers or anything like that to aid or solve this problem. My impression was that my donation would help this campaign. Most likely help funding the cost of making the millions of KONY 2012 Kits for the big evening, next month. The point of this all is to convince our world leaders to take action, search out this villian and bring him to justice. It's much more difficult for them to put this on the back burner when 80.2 million (present count of hits) world citizens demand action. Not to mention how much easier it will be to ferret him out when 80.2 million world citizens now know his face. So, before you star criticizing Russell, or Clooney, I think you better ask yourself, "Are you doing your part"? Because, your part, costs nothing. Sharing the video, telling a friend. You can even make up your own KONY 2012 Materials to help paper the world April 20th. Try asking "How can I" somtime instead of "How dare they". It'll do wonders for those nasty little lines above your brow, and it might even help another person.
