Third floor of NYC building collapses during party

Robert Mecea / AP

Part of the floor that collapsed in a building in Queens, N.Y., is seen early Sunday.

The third floor of an apartment building in the Rockaway neighborhood of Queens, New York, collapsed during a party late Saturday night, injuring 12 people, emergency officials told NBC News.

The Fire Department / EMS press office told NBC that the third floor caved into the second floor and that all of the victims appeared to have been on the third floor. Officials said only two were taken to the hospital and the rest were evaluated at the scene.

Emergency officials told NBC that eight of the victims had to be extracted by New York firefighters.

The apartment building is in the 400 block of Beach 72nd Street.

Earlier tweets had said that an object appeared to have fallen from an aircraft and hit the building.

So a floor collapsed and did not bring down the entire building? Odd for New York.

More ace reporting by MSNBC! This article is useless filler. It doesn't mention how many people were present, how old the building is, etc., or any other pertinent information.

Party causes NYC building's third floor to collapse

Don't have parties in New York - they cause your floors to collapse. Parties can be hell on the structural integrity of a building. Th floor collapsing had nothing to do with the floor being overloaded, poor construction, inferior materials, etc.

an object appeared to have fallen from an aircraft and hit the building.

It didn't make a hole in the roof or wall but knocked down a whole floor system?

NEW YORK (WABC) -- There's been a partial collapse of a three story private home in Queens.

The third floor collapsed onto the second floor.

It happened at 451 Beach 72nd street in the Arverne section of the Rockaways.

Two people were rescued from the house, their conditions are not known.

Several others managed to get out on their own.

The collapse happened at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

The cause of the collapse is unknown.

Conspiracy all the way that's the ticket, someone saw a predator drone circling.. Damn George Bush and his Christian agenda again.. They did this with a cruise missile I tell you and are calling it a collapse from a party.. The damn pilot missed the Mosque next door where the peaceful Muslims were field stripping their Ak47s and holding a bomb making class after evening prayers and the kill the Infidels lecture.. The only other explanation is a UFO crash..

Where's the confusion? Basically you were wondering when "terrorist" would be brought into the discussion. By doing so YOU brought it into the discussion whether you believed terrorists had anything to do with it or not.

No I wasn't wondering when it would be brought into the discussion, as I expected jokers, but rather I was wondering when people who actually believed it could be a terrorist action would join. Hence "screaming" rather than "joking" or "saying" was used in my first post.

Well perhaps you should have wondered IF rather than assume someone eventually would. Obviously you couldn't wait to point out how foolish that person was so you decided to do so preemptively. As it stands YOU are the only one to bring it up; so who looks foolish now?

What? Pray to who? To your god or to mine? Why? Why didn't he just prevent the damn thing? He is all-powerful, isn't he? Prayer doesn't do jack... and sorry to disappoint you, but your god is only in your mind.

The sensible thing to do would be to have building codes and inspections which ensure that having a party doesn't bring the floor down.

For what it's worth, relating to not only this unfortunate story but also the UK soccer player who collapsed during a game Saturday, and countless other sad situations: Serious scientific studies, including one sponsored by a religion-promoting group, have shown that prayer by others has no beneficial impact on someone suffering from an illness, though it can help the praying person feel as if they are helping.

With you AB. They can collapse your comment if they like but I second you. People who survive disasters always say they were praying and God spared them but do they not think those that were killed were not begging to God as they went to their deaths? This is not a rational world. I was watching the soocer match yesterday when Fabrice Muamba collapsed. People began praying almost immediately. But if you believe prayer works you must also believe that the same God put him in that condition on the ground because everything is God's will.

This particular story is seriously lacking in fact and detail. 8 people pulled from the rubble but only two go the hospital. Weird. Was the floor made out of cardboard?

If someone gets killed "God works in mysterious ways:

And when someone survives "It's a miracle"

It's amazing that everything has a catch22 answer...

Did you ever have the Jehovah's witnesses show up at your door with excerpts from the bible that fit a situation and they claim that 2000 or so years ago someone foresaw this moment...and they can quote it...does that mean the rest of the bible is wrong???

Trust me I believe in the church for the family values...I do good things for other people because I want to...not to get into some place called heaven or because the bible told me to...If I did is "an eye for an eye" ok then???

Yes, we are but don't forget to include the atheists, they are by far the MOST annoying. Seems to me that many atheists spend as much, if not more, time thinking about God than your average Christian does. Who friggin cares if someone else wants to pray to the invisible man in the sky? Is that really a reason to get all bent out of shape and rant and rave like a lunatic? There was no preaching going on here. If Billie-2352729 had said "But hope that no one...", it would have meant the same thing but he/she dared to use the dreaded "P" word so the atheists come out of the woodwork and turn the entire thread into a theological debate. Isn't that the very thing the hypocritical atheists are always bitching about? So like I said, the atheists are far more annoying, especially here on NewsVine.

Absolutely, they shove their belief in not believing in a higher power in your face.. Seems that they take the separation of church and state too far.. All that statement means is religion is not to be intertwined with state affairs and laws.. They want it erased completely and I think that violates peoples rights to free will.. Seems like the same people that complain about the pledge of allegiance in the schools..

OH! A Party (just updated in the story). Google Streetview shows some old wood frame apartment buildings on that block. Probably just age/lack of maintenance, but hope everyone is ok.

Since there were probably no airplanes involved, it's not really national news worthy though. Thankful for that.

Actually, that's a possibility if they got into a line dance or some other synchronized dancing. If the house was already weakened by termites, that could have been the straw to break the camels back. It will be interesting to hear why it actually collapsed.

Unfortunately for getting updates is that if no one was killed (I hope is the case), it will go to the back of the main stream media's news que.

That's Queens NY at the foot of one of the main runways for JFK. Google streetview shows wood frame houses and small apartment buildings that look like they may have been built in the 50's or earlier.

Most likely it was termites. But I don't understand why anyone would want to live that close to a runway like that. It must be deafening and exposes the buildings to a lot of vibration.

I hope everyone came out of it ok and maybe they can use the insurance money to move away from the airport! :)

Bush defunded a lot of programs that helped pay for building inspectors, engineers, etc ;)

yeah, cause the roof being on fire has a lot to do with the floor collapsing...

                                        try harder...

It's just when people sing this somg at the parties the stomp their feet, thus collapsing the floor in this case.

I love this "reporting" " it appears something fell from and aircraft" ok.... why? Was their a hole in the roof maybe that you forgot to tell us about? Did you interview the bum on the street corner and he said he saw a bright light? Is a plane missing something, because last time I checked the windows on the planes don't open? Is it a 5 story building with holes through the roof and four? I could be a reporter " it appears it was struck by and ice burg that subsequently melted based on the damage and the water later found in the area"

Shouldn't the building have fallen to the ground at free fall speed ? I thought New York was known for this ?
