N. Idaho white supremacist runs for sheriff

A white supremacist in northern Idaho is running for sheriff of Bonner County, saying his views on race will not influence his approach to the office.

Shaun Patrick Winkler, 33, is running against incumbent Sheriff Daryl Wheeler and Ponderay police Officer Tim Fry for the Republican nomination on May 15, according to the Bonner County Daily Bee.

The winner of the primary contest will face independent candidate Rocky Jordan in November.

Winkler told the Bee that his ties to the Aryan Nation and Church of Jesus Christ-Christian won’t influence his agenda.

“Whether people will believe me or not, it will be entirely up to their own discretion,” the Bee quoted Winkler as saying.

He said he was motivated to run because of the increasing federal reach into Bonner County, the newspaper reported. He also said he doesn’t think enough is being done to curb drugs and sex offenders.

“I don’t look at myself as a vigilante; I look at myself as a concerned citizen,” Winkler told the Bee.

I wonder if racial profiling will go up if he wins. I'm sorry, but discriminatory views towards minorities pretty much discounts that you can be fair when dealing with minorities, while in a law enforcement role.

He forgot to add that he was concerned about all those people of color coming into his area. You can bet there will be a number of non-white people just suddenly come up dead by cop if he is elected.

Discriminatory Views about anyone good or bad is improper and unprofessional in law enforcement, not just minorities.

The purpose of any criminal investigation is not to arrest a suspect, but to find out the TRUTH about what occured. Obtain the truth about who, what, when & how and collect all evidence to support it. The prosecutors review it then they decide wether to prosecute or not.

Any impartial biased upon the part of an officer of the law is detramental to this process.

Prior outspoken prejudicial biases will hinder his position.

This could be an up-and-down proposition. On one hand, you bet that racial profiling will go way up (bad), but on the other hand, you may just find sex offenders hanging from trees (good). (Sarcasm for those with no meter)

Guess I'm scratching "Fish the beautiful lakes of Bonner County" off the bucket list.

As I was reading the Headline, I said to my self, "Oh, don't tell me this is actually a Republican running for office." Then I couldn't believe the article actually confirmed it. I was not surprised, just saddened. I had really hoped we had gotten to the point where people really are judged by their abilities, rather than the color of their skin.

It truly does look like the Ku Klux Klan have traded in their pointy hoods for tri-cornered hats and joined the GOP.

The only Republicans you will see at a KKK meeting, are the ones wearing the noose necktie...

Ask Sen Robert Byrd - D(WV) about that and his KKK outfit...

You know Sen Robert Byrd, he is the person who tried to filibuster the 'Civil Rights Law'...

Winkler,

"He said he was motivated to run because of the increasing federal reach into Bonner County, the newspaper reported..."

Idaho is known for nesting White Supremacist hate groups.

The above statement by Winkler, is a thinly veiled cover.

Winkler's is running for sheriff because he considers himself to be the "antidote" to Obama, an African-American president. With the upcoming presidential election, this twisted individual knows that there are many American people who are upset that a person of color is this country's Commander-In-Chief. This hate monger is hoping to use the dissatisfaction of these closet and overt racists to ride into the sheriff's office. Sadly, Winkler will probably garner more votes, than Obama would in Bonner county.

People in Washington State refer to Idaho as "The Hate State".

Really? I've never heard that from any of my friends that live in Washington. I'm sorry you've heard that about us. I'm sure there are people here that do have hate in them; just as I know for a fact that there are wonderful people living in this state as well. I despise hate groups of any kind, as well, as hate mongers.

All right people. Give N. Idaho a break. Something belatedly missing from the wonderful MSNBC article:

The Aryan Nations is long gone from northern Idaho, but its reputation has lingered to the chagrin of locals.

This is from KHQ (out of Spokane, Wa and the NBC station for Northern Idaho). Maybe the MSNBC Staff that wrote this article should talk to their local NBC station.

Rlquall is absolutely right, Sandy. I've been a long time resident of western Washington and the Democrats have systematically erased the once business friendly atmosphere here and replaced it with one which is driving business big and small away.

And Seattle is MOST DEFINITELY the worst place to be.

This must be a joke. It's thanks to liberal and progressive policies that you have the tech and service economy that you do. If you had your way, you'd probably still be clinging to the withering corpse of a timber industry that was dying 25 years ago. Get down on your knees and thank your lucky stars for Democratic policies, you near-sighted fool.

unknown1 -- I'm sure that is the thrust of this guy's campaign, spoken or unspoken, "Vote for me and keep our county white!" Believe me, here in the South that sort of thing was spoken -- loudly -- forty-five or fifty years ago and in some places more recently than that. But you just can't have that sort of thing. I'm sure if this buffoon is elected by some, the Justice Dept. will practically open a branch office there, and probably with good reason.

                    Demographics

The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Idaho was 1,584,985 on July 1, 2011, a 1.11% increase since the 2010 United States Census.[1]

At the 2010 Census, 88.0% of the population was White, 0.6% Black or African American, 1.1% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, 0.1% from some other race and 1.7% of two or more races. 11.2% of Idaho's population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.

Any of you ever been to Northern Idaho?? It is noy to be confused with the REST of Idaho. As for non white people in the 2 months i spent there all I saw was a few Mexican Transient Produce Pickers and these were generally escorted out of town when they came. Local farmers & ranchers discourage them from going to town.

It is likely this guy will actually WIN the election since many who reside in the area are of Like mind. They do not however burn crosses, or beat people senseless and drop them off over the state line. They do discourage interaction from what I saw.

Many residents were near phobic-ally racist and moved to the area because of the area's known position regarding Non White's. They are comfortable with who they are and where they are. They do not seek trouble but simply want a small corner for themselves free of their percieved FEARS.

Remember, Fear makes people do things many consider unsociable so until you have walked a mile in their shoes and understand WHY they have these fears, Fears strong enough to send them to the very ends of the wild places, reserve harsh judgement. I can assure you that other than that one phobia, these were decent god fearing people who simply preferred to be left alone when I was in the area 20 years ago ( shortly after ruby ridge incident).

Many California people were moving into the area at that time. Most from the LA area.

Perhaps their fears are justified. Ive never been to LA myself but have not heard good things regarding crime etc..

Idaho is the last bastion of White Supremacy, and because in the USA, RACISM is TREASON, it's the last bastion of TRAITORS.

Not a surprising news item. I'm just surprised these American-haters actually want to participate in American government!!! I wonder if they'll give up their government-funding because non-white people contribute?

No one on this post knows what the hell they are talking about. You think because you don't hear much about Idaho except in cases like this, everyone becomes an expert. Rev. Butler once dead and the Aryan nation was ran out. The county went to court and seized the land. The people of Hayden Lake rejoiced when there was no more Aryan Nation. There are more supremist in other states than in Idaho. There are more hispanics, Basques, Oriental, Blacks in this area than you may think. We would rather no one come to our state with bigotted ideas like what is on this post.

unknown1 Spokane Wa. is only 20 miles from CDA Id. How many blacks live there.

Idaho is actually one of the states with the lowest number (9) of hate groups in the US according to the SPLC:

According to the nonprofit civil rights organization the Southern Poverty Law Center, the distinction of being the state with the most hate groups goes to Texas, with 66.

The SPLC profits from finding hate groups under every rock, because that's how they fundraise. There are plenty of actual hate groups and one real one is one too many, but I would prefer other, more objective statistics, even DoJ's. But if even SPLC has a hard time finding many in Idaho, it's probably a postive. I think that Ruby Ridge, the late "Rev." Bulter, and the "Montana Freemen" give the beautiful Pacific Northwest region and its people a very undeserved reputation nationally, kind of what Deliverance did for the Southern Highlands.

Can Mr. Winkler even imagine the appearance of impossible justice in any matter in which "non-white" people are involved? In any interview or interrogation, he would in all effect be saying "Now look here boy, just because I firmly believe that you and your kind are not a human-being in the sense that we superior white's are, don't you think for a second that it will have any effect on how I approach my duty as sheriff or my fairness in your dealings with me and the other superior whites around here." If Mr. Winkler does not recognize how this situation completely disqualifies him for the job, then I suggest he lacks the necessary intelligence to perform the job, and singlehandedly disproves his belief that his race makes him superior to non-whites.

The only reasons there would be some kind of increasing Federal 'reach' into Bonner County is that there is a requirement for it to happen or they were called in by either the Governor, the Idaho Attorney General or the U.S. Attorney for Idaho. The Fed's have enough to do without getting involved with local issues unless there is a serious need, or some kind of local assistance in a conspiracy, for them to get involved. If the Fed's are looking into Bonner County, then they have a reason.

40 years ago Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground, Obama was in grade school then. The two have no relationship with each other than having attended some fundraisers and community events in the general interest in the community. Drop the spin and get a grip, Obama was NEVER related to Ayer's activities all those years ago or since.

Well, I guess if people with no education, political or military or foreign or government or legal experience, can run for President, then a non-cop should be allowed to run for sheriff! Of course, allowing them to win is an entirely different matter. Government ineptitude is not their fault, everything wrong with the government is entirely the voters fault.

Hey, if he doesn't win there, I'm sure he'd have better luck in Florida.

Why would he run as a republican?

He should be running as a independent!

the republican party does not except racism, the republican party is the party that freed the slaves.

                            What a attension seeker.

Actually, the modern Republican party is the antithesis of the party which had Abraham Lincoln and Dwight D. Eisenhower elected from its ranks.

The modern GOP is closer to the KKK filled Democratic party of the South in the 50's and 60's than anything else.

While I wouldn't go quite that far in the language, there is a great deal of truth. Most of the southern democrats abandoned the party when JFK and then Johnson pushed for and eventually got civil and voting rights legislation. Over the course of the 70's and 80's they gravitated towards the Republican party.

The only time JFK voted on the Civil rights Bill, He voted AGAINST it as a Senator...

If it was not for the Republicans the 'Civil Rights Bill' would have never passed...

It was Robert Byrd D-WV who tried to filibuster the bill, a former KKK member...

You keep on trying to rewrite history...

BTY - The only way a Republican could attend a KKK meeting, was if they were wearing a noose...

Let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt for a minute and pretend that he actually could be fair to minorities. What happens to a black person who really is a bad criminal when he goes to court? His lawyer has a strong argument for him, even if the evidence has his client dead to rights, because of the known racism of the sheriff. There is no way a guy like this should hold ANY kind of law enforcement position, much less a sheriff. Hell, he shouldn't even hold a neighbourhood watch position; just ask Trayvon Martin's mom!

Leroy, glad you brought that up. Reminds me of the time when the vicious KILLER O.J. Simpson went on trial and the only guy to get convicted of anything was the racist cop who had otherwise done a pretty good job investigating the case (and who later moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, which is the county seat of Bonner County).

Ha! There's also someone who dropped out of the race for Sheriff in Kootenai County Idaho. He was busted with a possession of HEROIN charge. I am so glad I don't live in Idaho, I'd have to lean Tweakenese........

I grew up in Kootenai County and most of my family still live there. Would probably still live there my self if it had not became so over run with people from Washington and California trying to escape the Democratic utopias there.

If he was a Muslim, who cares, as long as he follows the Constitution, who cares what he believes.

Why would he run as a republican and not an independent?

Because, 2BadpPole, Republican is the dominate party here. He hopes to score points with that party.

The first line in the article says enough about the man that SHOULD lead to his losing. If you believe this man then you need as much help as he does.

You can tell on here who supports his views? by the way they will say:

The dems and liberals have radicals too!

As right and wrong is only based on:

If he did it, then why not me!

We have numerous Black Politicians across this country who are racist, they will call it racial pride, but if they are a member or former member of the New Black Panthers or the Black Panthers, or the Louis Farakkhan nation of Islam, then they are probably a racist or at least an anti-semite.

Yes, it appears there are quite a few folks here who know nothing about this state. I've lived here most of my life, excepting a couple of years in Alaska, and a couple years in Oregon. I love my state, although, being one of the dozen Democrats in the state, I abhor the government here. Sure, keep up the trash talk about this state; keep it from getting crowded here.

Was stationed there in Idaho Falls for four years. If I could get back there to live some how I would but the wife hates he winters. Nicest place I ever lived, except for my home state of Florida of course.

Remember the saying "Idaho is what America once was."
