Police in Fort Worth, Texas, say an arrest has been made in connection with Tuesday's firebomb attack outside the office of a Texas state senator. KXAS-TV's Scott Gordon reports.
Fort Worth police say an arrest has been made in connection with Tuesday night's firebomb attack on the office of state Sen. Wendy Davis.
Davis was not in the office at the time of the attack, and no one was injured.
Two staff members opened the door to the office Tuesday night to find flames shooting in the air, the senator's spokesman said. An employee put out the fire with an extinguisher, said Anthony Spangler, the senator's spokesman.
The man fled across the street, according to witnesses.
Davis, a former Fort Worth City Council member, has been locked in a heated battle over redistricting. Her office is located on trendy West Seventh Street.
She praised police and firefighters for their quick response and said she doesn't know who would want to attack her.
"It's a sad but true fact of public service that we have to feel concerned sometimes for our personal safety," Davis said.
Arson investigators spent several hours examining the scene and carrying out several fuel-filled bottles known as Molotov cocktails.
A valet who works for a restaurant across from the office building said he and two other men saw the man running out the building moments after the fire alarm sounded.
The valet, who declined to give his name, said they chased the man but lost him after he ran across the street.
Spangler said the Texas Department of Public Safety was assisting the Fort Worth Fire Department in the investigation.
"I think our staffers were probably very shocked by what happened and glad to get out of the office safely," Spangler said.
Davis said her office would reopen Wednesday morning.
"We are going to try to continue to be calm but strong on the issues we believe in," she said.
Spangler also said the senator's office had received no recent threats, but investigators were checking into reports the arsonist matched the general description of a disgruntled constituent who had gone to the office in the past week.

Sadly, I'm not surprised at all by this occurence. What sort of cowardly chump tries to firebomb a democratic state senator? A woman at that?
Thank goodness this (assumed) Texas assailant didn't have access to a plane.
How do you know he/she doesn't?
No doubt the assailant was another rightwing nutcase that got set off by the toxic rhetoric of one of the rightwing pundits like Limbaugh.
.
We don't know yet if this was politically motivated, but I worry about Romney saying that the president assails our freedom, feels unchecked by the constitution, and so on, and Gingrich saying Obama is most dangerous, most radical, and "can you imagine what he will do" if he doesn't need to worry about re-election, and so on. The GOP primary is fueled by such hate speech; and it only takes one James Cumming or Adkisson to get a bomb or gun to kill "libtards." We really need to ask the big names on the right to quit with the hate speech -- it's not going to get them elected, but it could get some of us killed.
Shuklack,
"What sort of cowardly chump tries to firebomb a democratic state senator? A woman at that?"
The same sort of nut who shot a democratic congresswoman in Tucson, AZ, just last year. There seems to be a war on democrats going on.
It's really scary that there are idiots like this loose on the streets. Seems like politics can bring out the best (not often enough) and the worst............. in people.
Note to idiots: This is an act of terrorism. Don't care what side of the aisle or particular legislation you're on. This doesn't fly in the U.S. Hope they make an example of this fool and give him the max.
@ScientistX
no, of course not. liberals and democrats are continually targeted in their homes and office, and its not politically motivated. republicans repeatedly use violent language peppered with innuendo about 'second amendment solutions', but then are shocked when those things become a reality.
planned parenthood and abortion clinics and mosques and what have you, are continually targeted for violence and vandalism, but no, nothing to see here. just another lone wolf loon acting on his own as if he lived in a world completely bereft of reasons to hate and attack those institutions.
next time someone tells you that 'both sides do it' they are lying to you. they are lying to you and if you believe it and dont call them out on it, you are enabling these very same people who refuse to relent in their violence or their violent rhetoric, and you are just as much part of the problem.
The nut in AZ was a lib and anarchist. Much like the Progressives who attack businesses in the name of the earth ELF and riot when there is a G12 meeting.
This is a conservative right-wing wacko taking his frustration out on an elected representative. Surprised? Why?
The right's strategy for the past decade has been to tap into fear, hatred, anger over artificial or inflated problems, many of them created by their own foolish legislative behavior. (Pay for a war without increased taxation; steal from SS; underfund Medicare.) They tune up their crazies with statements from Palin and Limbaugh, or Coulter and Beck. And they stand back and watch their armed, insane, and confused followers cut down innocents. It's time to put the right out of their misery ---- vote them all out of office. Perhaps we can offer them Arizona or Montana for them to build their bunkers, stockpile their bullets, and kill each other.
For those who don't believe the right is culpable, read read RMJ's post below, or look up hate speech using Google as he suggested. It's enlightening . . . for all but the deniers.
Scientist, I just don't see how anything Romney or Gingrich said can qualify as "hate speech." Negative, yes, but that's politics. You think Obama isn't saying negative things about the GOP??? Of course he is. I think there's a HUGE difference between saying Obama "feels unchecked by the Constitution" and calling someone a slut or prostitute, as Rush recently did. THAT was hate speech.
And btw, I agree with Romney about Obama - he IS assailing our freedom (didn't he recently sign a bill giving the Gov't permission to detain American citizens indefinitely?) and he DOES feel unchecked by the Constitution (mandating Catholic institutions to provide BC even if it's against their religious doctrine? 1st Amendment violation?) The SCOTUS may agree with Romney when they rule on the constitutionality of Obamacare, and don't get me started on the TSA pat-down/feel-ups.
@T Bourlon
youve never heard gingrich using hate speech? you must have your head so far up something that you cant hear him say anything at all. the man practically cant open his mouth without saying something despicable.
btw, unlawful detentions, assassination of citizens, pat downs are all legacy of the bush administration. were you screaming about it then? trust me, liberals were. and they are screaming about it now too.
ACA is constitutional. you are given an incentive to get health insurance. you dont get it, you lose that incentive. case closed.
as for the contraceptive thing...what you are describing isnt even happening anymore. the policy proposal was alive for about two days, and obama recognized the criticisms (albeit they were completely frivolous and cynical) and changed it immediately.
zaruski: Liberals are known for non-violence, except for cases like looting after a disaster because people are just looking for clean bottled water to drink so that they don't die of thirst. Then reports of massive looting and gun violence are exaggerated by the media, even when it can be proven that the gun violence is directed at the poor, thirsty, starving people. And if this Senator was in favor of contraception, what does that say about the sanctity of life after birth that the conservatives do not care about? All of us wonder, in this case and the case of the teenager in Florida who was killed, what is this country coming to?
Our hands are tied: the Supreme Court always sides with the conservatives in every case. It is impossible to nominate a liberal Justice, because the confirmation process requires 60 votes in the Senate, which is packed with low-population conservative states. The Senate rules and the Electoral College cause most of the unfair policies in America. The only way to have fair laws is to vote for them; the only way to vote for them is to allow all people to vote; the only way to allow all people to vote is fair voting laws and plenty of polling places. As bad as this violence is, the conservatives are gearing up to turn this country into a dictatorship in November.
T: "mandating Catholic institutions to provide BC even if it's against their religious doctrine?"
No one mandated any Catholic institution to do anything. They just asked their INSURANCE company (to which the employee pays premiums) to provide BC to employees who WORK for Catholic companies. Fair is fair. Silly Billy!
The general rhetoric of republicanism is based in all things fantastic, stupid, and conspiratorial. 90% of 'em can begin with traditional political coherency, but will soon deviate into nonsensical claptrap, especially when someone questions their original pontifications. They provide the perfect settling place for the mentally unsettled with the same surety a sour dishrag attracts flies.
Calm down folks... we do not know if this was politically motivated. But I agree that the vitriolic rhetoric of Dush Limpbag, Sham Hannity, Micheal Savage, Glenn Beck and Bill orielly is aggravating people's distrust of government as well as tapping into people's hatred and fear.
Hmmm...firebomb in the hall outside a state senator's office. Kinda lame if you ask me. Just shows how inept these right wing republicans are. Especially when one considers the what happened in Waco Texas where scores of children and adults were burned to death because of actions from the DEMOCRATIC administration in power at the time. Lets see...they intervened to save the children from this Koresh guy. Nice job dems...mission accomplished... And why does this have to be a repub vs dem issue? We don't know...it could just be someone pissed off at this state senator because she voted to cut back on a pig feed subsidy...and the person may be a democratic pig farmer. This hatred between the political parties doesn't serve the American people and the dems are just as bad as the repubs...in my opinion...both parties suck.
Understatement! If Texas and Arizona can't control their citizens perhaps marshal law needs to be imposed. Maricopa County official Sheriff Arpaio is even involved directly with the war on Democrats with his misappropriation of county resources for a fictitious birther investigation. Governors Perry and Brewer need to openly condemn these acts or they are nothing but instigators, aiders and abettors after the fact!
I really think you all are putting me on. Romney says that Obama is waging war on our freedoms is hate speech? That is a fact, not hate speech. Under Obama we now have people in schools checking to make sure the lunch that a PARENT made conforms to guidelines. Doesn't that bother anybody? Under Obamacare you will be forced to buy health insurance, and not just insurance, but a policy that the government thinks is enough insurance for you. Under Obama churches for the first time in history are required to pay for services that they don't agree with. Is illuminating the truth now hate speech?
This article was on a Texas state senator who's office was firebombed and it devolves into this? For all we know it is a spurned lover, some crazy mental patient (see Gabby Giffords) or could have been the freaking wrong address! But all of you want to immediately make this about the evil Republicans? Come on, we can't be that far gone, can we?
Latest update from NBC news in Ft. Worth:
"Fort Worth police have made an arrest in connection with Tuesday night's attack on Sen. Wendy Davis' Fort Worth office.
In a news conference Wednesday, officials said Cedric Steel was arrested on a charge of arson of a building and is being held on $50,000 bond.
Police said that witness reports and evidence at the scene led them to Steel, who was determined to be living in a vacant residence on the 5600-block of Donnelly. Inside that residence officers found wicks, an empty can of lighter fluid and other items they believe were used in the attack.
Fire investigators said Wednesday that the fire at Davis' office was started with bottles filled with an accelerant believed to be lighter fluid.
Additionally, officials said Steel had visited Davis' office on March 16 and March 19 hoping to speak with the Senator. Davis wasn't in the office and staffers said Steel told them that they would soon read about him on the news.
Steel was arrested after being located in the parking lot of a convenience store on the 6000-block of Camp Bowie Boulevard.
Following the attack on her office Tuesday night, Davis was placed in protective custody of the Department of Public Safety for about four hours.
Davis was not in the office at the time of the attack, though two staffers were and they are credited with putting out the fire. Both staffers were able to escape without injury.
"It's a sad but true fact of public service that we have to feel concerned sometimes for our personal safety," Davis said Tuesday evening."
Republican or Democrat? Or did the reporter think nobody would be interested in knowing that?
@iamstopper - you possess a convenient lack of memory of the numerous, too many to count, murders and bombings of the right wing "faith based Fascist" in America hiding behind religious slogans and dogma. The two are one now both feeding off of each others fears and hated plus the disgusting sense of entitlement to dictate to the country their immorality. How soon you forget Rudolph and the legion of faith based school massacres, health clinic bombings and other heinous and yes murderous acts of these fanatics.
If I had the time I could easily draw up a very long list starting with dirty tricks up to cold blooded murder in the name of God and country. I have to leave for work but your post among others of the same ilk display a total lack of attachment to reality, please do some research then post your apologetics.
Poor reporter is not interested in reporting the party and the views of the senator...poorly written.
The pattern of murder, religiosity and Fascism is well established in America we have the evidence to speculate, I can presume a strong religious and right wing indoctrination of the shooter, maybe I am wrong but I it would fit the established profile.
Would you like to post a link or reference this claim?
This is an out and out lie. No church is forced to provide services they don't agree with. Insurance companies are required to pay the cost of birth control, not the church.
"When they show you who they are...believe them."
iamstopper... you are the perfect target for people like Dush Limpbag, Sham Hannity, Mike Savage and their ilk because you WILL believe anything they say without giving it ANY critical thought.
"Under Obama we now have people in schools checking to make sure the lunch that a PARENT made conforms to guidelines." WHAT A COMPLETE FARCE... if you truly believe this then I feel sorry for you. The guidleine you are referencing are an attempt to make lunches purchased at public schools healthier in an attempt to fight obesity in children and reduce their intake of sugary snacks which could lead to diabetes. So, according to you, trying to protect the health of children is a BAD THING? REALLY? Are you that blindly partisan? Ignorant?
Leiya123, thanks for posting that article. What this looks like to me is the same sort of thing as Jared Loughner shooting Gabby Giffords. The lawyers will try to blame schizophrenia or something like that, to avoid serious criminal sentencing, but as a national collegiate scholar, I wrote an A-graded social psychology paper on the Giffords situation. My research convinced me that Loughner's action was not so much the result of mental disorder (it definitely was contributive, regarding Loughner's general mindset) but of premeditation. I think this action is similar to Loughner's simply because attacks like this due to a mental disturbance are almost always up close and personal--walking into the office and shooting the person, or walking up through the crowd and stabbing the person is much more likely than creating significant collateral damage from the edge of a crowd, or firebombing the hallway when the office was closed. Those actions are more likely the result of a temper tantrum...
They just shoot them in Arizona
Dave Spencer: In the courts, the exact motivations must be found. However, there is an atmosphere of violence and inciting that has been promoted by Fox, several neocon speakers, etc. The problem is that in the microscopic view of any criminal, those who may have incited the behavior are never brought to justice, because the focus in the foreground blurs the view of the neocons cheering on in the background.
LOL
You progressive liberals are so funny trying to pretend that the only hate speech only exists on the right. All anyone has to do is an internet search to find a plethora or quotes from liberals inviting rape, assault and murder. What is really sick is the way liberals try to play the quotes down as 'unimportant' or 'just a joke'.
Why not stop being enablers to this kind of crap and put the blame where it belongs, with the person who did the act. You know, show just a little intelligence.
Ol_Doc
Here you go.
RAEFORD — A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because the school told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.
The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.

Stonedog... put your money where your ill-informed mouth is and post some links of "...liberals inviting rape, assault and murder."
Use that VAST intelligence of yours to find these examples.
Thank you, notliborcon, for that admonishment--I'd like to see some of that...
oH DRAT!
Seems like you found us out Stonedog34!
I blame all that 'indoctrination' we go thru in colleges and other 'places of higher learning' where we learn about things like Ghandi's 'passive resistance' and some other guy who said long ago "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" :Matthew 5:44
http://bible.cc/matthew/5-44.htm
Old doc it is not a lie but it started before Obama. It is why I stopped sending lunch for my child and took the school lunch. They check it over and if they don't like it they throw it out send your kid through the lunch line and send a note for the money. I personally hated the choices the had at the school but they didn't like mine. Rob hate speech on the net is rampant against both White all Trayvon Martin sites and Catholics any site having to do with contraception or anything that mentions the Vatican. My personel favorite is the people who want to arrest the Vatican going to cuff St Peters? And don't think anything is wrong with invading Italy and killing Swiss citizens to do it.
Hope all of you blaming Rightwing Conservative Republicans take time to write apologies to all those who you attack on this thread and recant all the hatred you spewed against the wrong side, people or group you blamed for this attack.
Because the attacker was caught and he sure ain't a conservative Republican by any stretch of any imagination regardless of how you try and twist spin it.

She's a Democrat, to answer the question everybody wanted to know in the lede but had to scan the entire story to no avail. Nice job, Mr. Gordon or his editors on leaving out that important detail. Even if she were a Republican, it doesn't make sense to leave it out. But then we probably wouldn't be reading about this would we. Tone it down, people.
"She's a Democrat" Uh-oh. I wonder what Rush will have to say about this today. Tone it down indeed.
It doesn't matter if she's a Democrat or Republican. Civil people don't firebomb a representative's office regardless of political stripe. The politics of the victim only matter to the people who want to fuel partisanship. The politics of the victim and arsonist don't matter. The arsonists is clearly mentally-ill. Because stable sane people can have disagreements without starting fires.
Stand..., since when has Rush advocated the use of violence? We don't know who did this yet, may be a personal matter.
Why is the arsonist "mentally ill"? Just because someone commits a crime they are mentally ill? No, people commit crimes for a variety of reasons, some because their mental illness leads them to do something or to adopt certain behaviors based on their environment. The politics matters because this is highly unlikely to be a random act and the motivation of the arsonist is likely political in nature, even if the motive was adopted by a mentally ill person. Stable sane people with political, financial or emotional (failed romance) motives certainly can start arson fires. I will agree that civil people are not arsonists, but I stop at declaring all crime a function of mental illness. That's poppycock.
“Christianity has been one of the great salvations on planet Earth. It’s what’s necessary in the Middle East. I think these people need to be forcibly converted to Christianity.” - Michael Savage
“When I hear someone’s in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-25.” - Michael Savage
"I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus – living fossils – so we will never forget what these people stood for." - Rush Limbaugh
"We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too." - Ann Coulter
"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building." -Ann Coulter
Hardtostarboard...this is the calls for violence against "the other side" we're talking about. It isn't just Limbaugh...right wing pundits have no issues with inciting violence that weaker minded, mentally unstable people take to heart.
There's plenty more. Just look up right wing hate speech on Google and there they are. If you can find liberal hate speech then please feel free to post. Not being confrontational...just saying, the only way to stop behavior like this is to lay the crimes of both sides on the table.
Liberals are often criticized for being pacifists or appeasers. We're too politically correct. Only rightwing nutcases think that its acceptable to use violence to defend their way of life.
Yes, yes, there are nutcases out there who don't fit into either political ideology like the kid who shot Gabby Giffords.
But in the last 20 years, who has carried out nearly all acts of domestic terrorism. Conservatives. Abortion Clinics Bombed, Doctors killed or shot, Federal Buildings blown up, Ruby Ridge, those militia guys in Ohio. Give me the hippies anyday. They can be lazy and smell bad all they want. At least I don't have to worry about getting in the crossfire because they think someones coming for their guns or their rights.
@ Spyder Girl. Like this is so peaceful....
http://www.stltoday.com/news/multimedia/vandals-spray-paint-compton-hill-reservoir-park/image_def9f327-3019-5224-8c86-8cc3552e6f27.html
It's time to start demanding that EVERY person that incites violence be jailed AND fined for it. Our national debt could use some of those fines: criminals are not allowed to profit from their crimes. Let's take all those book profits, lecture fees, TV and radio deals, etc. and feed it into the US Treasury where that money belongs. The advertisers should be fined too if they support hate and violence speech.
Anybody who can write some good paragraphs want to start a petition to fine those who incite violence? That is the root cause of so much death and destruction in America. We can't just blame a few "mental cases" when it is blaring on the radio and TV every day.
ksw62118
Oh, yes, a can of spray paint is EXACTLY like bombing and killing. Are you that daft? Hippies are annoying but when was the last time you saw hippies forming militias to hunt down and kill federal agents and the president? No, I'm sorry, only conservatives believe that violence against people you disagree with is acceptable. Liberals find violence abhorrent. Of course that's a broad stereotype of both camps, but stereotypes arise for a reason.
do youn really think rush, hannity, oreally, beck, palin and all the rest of those other whack jobs wouldn't be screaming their heads off about the assaults the repubs are continually under
1. Rush Limbaugh: "I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus – living fossils – so we will never forget what these people stood for."
2. Senator Phil Gramm: "We're going to keep building the party until we're hunting Democrats with dogs."
3. Rep. James Hansen on Bill Clinton: Get rid of the guy. Impreach him, censure him, assassinate him."
4. John Derbyshire intimated in the National Review that because Chelsea Clinton had "the taint," she should "be killed."
5. Ann Coulter: "We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too."
6. Ann Coulter: "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building."
7. Bill O'Reilly: "ll those clowns over at the liberal radio network, we could incarcerate them immediately. Will you have that done, please? Send over the FBI and just put them in chains."
8. Clear Channel radio host Glenn Beck said he was "thinking about killing Michael Moore" and pondered whether "I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it," before concluding: "No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong?"
How's this? ...any questions?
You have 1 quote attributed to Rush, and if you knew anything about Rush you would know he commonly employs sarcasm in his show. Give me the entire context of the statement, not one line cherry picked for your purposes. Furthermore, I could easily find statements similar in nature made by prominent democrats and their supporters. Rush does not advocate violence, nor does the Tea Party, all figments of warped liberal minds to smear and discredit the opposition.
Wow, heated politics indeed.
what about the praise and thanks for the staffer who put out the fire?
i could never be a politician. i believe in fair play, giving credit where credit is due and an honest wage for an honest day's work, among many other things.
Before I even read the story I said to myself, firebombs? I bet the senator is a democrat. Well, I'll be damn, I was right on the money.
As much as I want to see this country with some decent, strong leadership, electing another party filled with paranoid psychotics with violent tendencies to replace obama is not necessarily the country I want for my kids either. Isn't there a party for normal people besides the democrats and republicans?
Libs are generally unrealistic in their utopian dreams of an American rose garden in my opinion. But I can deal with that better than the terroristic ideals of the conservatives. Firebombs, hatred, militias in the woods. We got enough problems with the muslim jihadists already without the gop terrorists helping them out.
Conservatives are not terroristic Fred. You have been reading too much MSNBC.
Sadly the political polarization continues. Who cares what the rep's party was, at least no one was injured. BTW: Politics has always been a hot button topic, many people refuse to discuss politics or religion and do so because they don't want to get caught up in heated arguments that are essentially unwinnable. If you look at history you will find that this has ALWAYS been the case. Heck, duels were fought over politics. People were and are killed as a result of politics. Talk about banning something? Perhaps politics should be banned.
Too much MSNBC? Indeed. Possible. But, pray tell, why are you reading MSNBC if you do not
trust it?
@Fred Guisse
yep. same thing happened to me. there was about 10% give or take doubt in my mind that it was a democrat representative's office.
@mygirl1
no. the polarization doesnt continue. ever since obama took office there has been an average of one attack per month that can be attributed to individuals who identify with the right wing of this country. and every single time, people like you want to play pretend and say that its an isolated incident, nothing to see here.
before you open your mouth to say that both sides do it...just dont. its a lie. you cannot find an equivalent of this when bush was elected. not in terms of quantity or in terms of magnitude. you just veritably, factually cant.
so if you want to be part of the solution, by any measure, start recognizing that the reality is one sides does it. a lot. continually. unrepentantly. the other...does it on occasion. and there is a world of difference there.
@kansasfsdafsadfsadaf. I'll throw the BS flag. Conservatives have bombed Abortion clinics, assassinated doctors, targeted US reps (Gabby Giffords), protested against dead soldiers for supporting "faggots", etc, etc...
Conservatives are 100% anti-American, 100% anti-Constitutional folks; and until they throw out the Tea Party, racist elements of their party, that is EXACTLY what they are.
Fred, why don't you take your partisan BS somewhere else. It is an act of terrorism, thuggery, intimidation, whatever you want to call it. When thing don't go right for you during the day, who do you blame? Do you really believe that every loser nutcase has to belong to a political party, because if so, we know how to label you.
Kansas, I dare you to show us one heavily armed liberal militia. America has far too many extremely armed people in this country. Look at some of our TV shows. Ever see Doomday Preppers or Doomsday Bunkers. People on those show have 2 years worth of food down the basements or in secret caches. One guy had 80 firearms. 80! Another had 10,000 rounds of ammunition. 10,000 rounds! It doesn't take much of the demagogic ranting to set off a person on the edge mentally wise. Guys like Limbaugh and Beck are masterfully careful not to actually place a bounty on the head of anyone but they come so close to it that it is frightening. In a world where David Berkowitz was convinced that the neighbor's dog told him to kill it is not too far fetched to think the that people who spew vitriolic hate won't be taken at their word by some nut. One of my former neighbors is one of those Hutaree Militia nuts now in custody. We was one scary neighborhood nutcase. The thought that he had access to weapons, explosives, and was preparing to use them against government officials or civilians should scare the Jesus out of you!
kansas, read what RMJ quoted in the post above, which you will not find out of the mouths of any liberal:
"“Christianity has been one of the great salvations on planet Earth.
"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building." -Ann Coulter"
Fox is going to spin this just like they did the Giffords shooting, they will say it was a "dope smoking liberal who attacked her because she wasn't liberal enough", that is exactly what they said about Loughner within minutes of the shooting. At first even conservatives were calling for an end to the hate speech but within 2 hours I heard interviews with people who said "well at first I thought it was politically motivated but the more I hear the more I think it was just some crazy with a gun." According to the right wing propaganda machine all gun owners are responsible NRA members until the snap and shoot up a mickey d's then they are "just some crazy with a gun." I wonder what the stats are on just how many of these "crazies with guns" were actually NRA members "before" they pulled the trigger?
Kansas -- Conservatives are not terrorists; but terrorists ARE conservatives, be they Christian or Muslim.
I live with conservatives, I work with them. I don't depend on Fox or MSNBC to portray reality for me, I experience it first hand. The conversations are generally peppered with references to guns and the need to "take back America".
And just like the poor afghanistan farmer who bows to the armed taliban terrorists when they come to his village, I keep a very low profile with my conservative acquaintances, they mean business. They remind me they always have their gun nearby.
I don't accuse all conservatives of being terrorists. But those who do have the mindset to threaten human life directly over ideologies are most often attracted to the conservative camp.
The abortion opponents using rifles and bombs, the timothy mcveighs, the laughners. They are nut cases, but with a common thread. They all follow conservative hate principles, not liberal ones. Liberal terrorists burn bulldozers and SUV's, attack powerplants, hack websites . Right wing terrorist threaten human life, they got guns and they remind us incessantly. Why, if they do not intend to use them? To terrorize by death?
Nah, I'll stand 100% behind my opinion.
This is no way to act. What the hell was this guy thinking? Someone could have been seriously hurt, or even killed. What the hell is wrong with some people?
North Texas is as close as you probably get in our country to an Islamic religious state. Tons of evangelicals and Southern Baptists with no tolerance for anyone that does not see the world the same light as their close minded view. There have been local Planned Parenthood office's attacked as well, and you actually see Newt, Perry and Santorum yard signs and bumper stickers commonly. Of course Ron Paul is from north east Texas as well. Recently Santorum and Huckabee have made speaking stops in Collin County. Me and my wife actually fear reprisal if we are so bold as to put a democratic bumper sticker on our car or sign in our yard. This is the America the far right wants for all of us.
I know what you mean. It's like admitting you're not a conservative or not a christian means it's OK to harass you. This is what the likes of Fox News and other conservative propagandists has brought us.
No it is what the Left propaganda machine has brought us. They like to play the race card and the class warfare card when they think it will help them.
I feel your concern, I myself live in SC. It takes a bold person to display anything liberal or dem in my side of this state. My vehicle has a little age on it and I have limited income, so I can't afford the car repair by displaying my polical preferance.
For the right wing nuts who smugly state limpbutt doesn't contribute to this atmosphere, may I suggest you get a mental evaluation. You are living in your own created wonderland of violence.
I listened to right wing pundits on the radio trying to justify the killing of a young black male. Had nothing to do with his race is what they were bitching about.
I had my car vandalized and my life threatened simply for having an Obama bumper sticker in Wyoming. I guess it's time we start shooting back.
I want to confess. I am a Christian, and a liberal. But when I go to Bible study, it is the same thing: I feel like I have to hide any politics. Participants don't believe that Pres. Obama made a Christian speech during the lighting of the White House Christmas tree.
This attitude is new in my church in the last 30 years. The cause? Conservatives are more likely to be involved in the oil industry and other big industries, which protects anybody who protects countries that produce lots of oil. But then they transfer the blame, as if it is the liberal's fault for not protecting Christians around the world. Think about the countries in the world that are conservative, fund U.S. conservatives, and also are very good at passing the blame on others to cover up their dictatorships, and yes, they infiltrate churches, and find some issues that will get the conservatives riled up and make the liberals look immoral. This is nothing to do with Christian doctrine, but the oil industry.
Deprogrammer...
I have been urging liberals and progressives to start arming themselves for years now. The right-wing nutbags are willing to use violence...and the rest of us need to wake up and realize that this is not a game and it will not just pass and we need to be ready to defend ourselves, lest we want t live under their theo-fascist rule.
It's coming. Do you think they will really just let Obama be president for four more years without more violence? And if Hillary were to run and win in 2016...we'd be looking at at a possible violent revolution by the seditious un-patriotic anti-democratic right-wing American Taliban...they simply would not allow 16 years of un-broken democratic rule without a bloody fight because for all their flag-waving, they really do not believe in our democratic system or the constitution (only the parts they wish to cherry pick...like they do with the bible...).
I agree with OUWhine completely and I LIVE in Fort Worth, where this regrettable incident occurred. Texas is dangerous for Democrats in general and liberals in particular. I've been threatened in the mail, over the phone and in the daily Republican rag, The Fort Worth Star Telegram, for my far left views.
While I may easily rail and rant against Texas' ridiculous backwoods version of conservativism, I nor any 'real liberal' would want to see harm done to anyone based on political persuasion. We are Americans, we are supposed to disagree and support dissent.
Reports CLAIM that this was a an isolated incident committed by a 'homeless person,' but I don't believe our newspaper. I have seen the right wing hatred around Cowtown up close and personal.
It is frightening.
OuWhine maybe we should start calling them Texibans. The fundamentalist Christain version of the taliban ! Talitexies sounds too much like a cab service.
Home grown terrorism... sounds like that idiot will get caught, and we should hit him with the book!
Separately, these fringe must be marginalized, and those that carelessly (or deliberately) fuel hatred should be marginalized - not by police action (unless preventing actual violence of course), but by our denouncing and stepping away from watching/listening to the sources of such reckless rhetoric and from the sources of their remuneration.
I'm thinking it is Cartel related. He has been outspoken about border security and illegal immigration as of late.
I think it is Mexicos drug war violence spilling over into the United States. Probably something to do with those new boats Texas has acquired.
center - Couldn't agree more. We need to be sure that we are doing what we demand moderate muslims in the middle east do; aggressively denounce violence by extremists. Regardless of whether we are personally democrats, republicans or independents, there is no room for violence in the American political process. I think there is much about our government that is reprehensible and that must be changed, but I believe that this can still be done through legal political action. We must move toward the political center if we wish to combat American extremism. And BTW, lived in Dallas/Fort Worth area for awhile and had no trouble stating these very things to my conservative friends there. Never had one minute of trouble from anyone about my political opinions which tend strongly to the secular center.
1) The senator is a she,
2) Cartels would use grenades and automatic weapons,
3) Cartels don't want to screw around too much in the US, they have a good thing going and that would be a disruption.
OK. I denounce Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Hannity, Coulter, Palin, etc. etc. for their hate speech that advocates violence against those who disagree with them.
There. But people have been denouncing them: ever heard of Gabby Giffords?
We need to do more than denounce. They have incited rioting and criminal behavior: accessories before the fact. Criminals are not allowed to profit from their crimes. They should be fined and all profits from books, TV, radio, lectures, internet, and any other means be taken away from them. This is a criminal case, folks, and it must be treated as a criminal case, with fines and consequences for all the accessories before the fact.
@Elizabeth what about Occupy.
Occupy is non-violent, except for police plants. I agree that Occupy is messy, and something else needs to be done that is more to the point, but there aren't speeches inciting riot.
@ksw yea what about Occupy?
@ Crazy, Look at my link above, they also painted threats against the police. My point is there have or are currently extremists who have been on both sides and to stereotype entire groups of people is wrong. Look at the 60's radical groups who bombed (think Weather Underground)...
Yet another example of right wing terrorism. How soon will it be until the MSM starts actually using the term? How soon before someone claims that she deserved it or how it's part of some scheme to make the GOP look bad?
that's already been done by our Vice-President..... "The Tea Party all terrorists"
Did you bother to ask yourself why they left out the description of the alleged attacker? Maybe because the media wants you to use your (albeit limited) imagination so you can come t your own conclusions.
First account was Hispanic male thirty to mid-thirties.
So he's hispanic? It's not his skin color or heritage that worries us on the left, but rather his political justification for committing an act of terrorism. Plenty of Hispanics are conservatives.
Also, a note about first accounts - you may be right and he may be Hispanic, but in Texas in the middle of the night I'm sure the suspect is never described as "some Hispanic guy." /s I don't think I trust a bunch of Texans to blame one of their own instead of an immigrant regardless of what happened.
Terrorists, criminals, and those who incite violence: accessories before the fact that must have all money that came to them as profits for their hate speech taken away.
Why would you do this story and not identify WHO the suspect is. My guess its a illegal immigrant.
Hispanic male. Thirty to mid-thirties. Wonder why that was left out of the broadcast? Just look at all of the idiotic liberal posts here to understand why the media censors stories.
If he's an illegal then he's attacking the wrong office! Not that he should attack anyone, but it's the Repubs in Texas trying to gerrymander away the hispanic vote and round up all the immigrants.
Navyvet98 - I didn't read any posts that blamed it on "white guys." All I read was comments about conservatives. The ethnicity of the arsonist isn't a concern - except that for you Hispanics can't be conservatives. I think that is telling of how you define white people and Hispanics! Plenty of Hispanics are conservative whether you want them to be or not.
Trust me, radagast, he wants those Hispanic conservatives to vote for the Republicans, but as soon as the election is over, he would want to deport them. The Repubs know, that is why speeches are made in Spanish by both parties.
At the time the report was published they didn't know who the suspect is.
Regarding OUwhine . . . hang in there! We affectionately call y'all "prairie dog" Democrats, because you poke your head up for elections then go back underground for another two years. Perhaps we need a Democratic contingent from central Texas to come up now and again for a visit.
I vote in the Republican primaries for the least nutty Republican. It's the only influence Democrats can have on the election process in Texas.
Nobody9. I keep trying to find my way to to Austin, but it is hard. I grew up in Dallas so it really is home, but parts of it are pretty close minded for sure. I like that "Prairie Dog" label. My wife will get a kick out of it too. I was actually born in Lubbock and one of the big attractions was Prairie Dog Town.
Like they say, "Texas - It's a Whole Other Country", no reference meant to the Right Wing calls for succession.
Sam -- Is there a least nutty republican?
Given the price of gas has shot up so much this guy must be really upset. Maybe this explains why the Energy Secretary is fine with $5.00 gas.
Navyvet, Maybe that's why the Energy Secretary gave himself, as he said, a grade of sonmewhere above an A-. Doesn't have the balls to say an A or A+. He is a total idiot!!!!!!!! Heck, I'm gonna change parties just because of crap like this that the Democrats pull.
I'm not Okie!
Probably the Mexicans.
This is the very reason I have been calling for our government to close the border to Mexico, deport all illegal aliens, and to put our military on the border to drastically ramp up our national security.
Nut job.
Nice response. Some call that trolling Nut job.
I guess Dave is referring to your deflection of the issue. What does this have to do with illegals? If the guy was hispanic how do you know he is illegal? Why would an immigrant attack a Dem?
Way to attack a minority, sonar guy.
We do not know the details of this attack, but rightwing violence is a concern, and not just because of Rush Limbaugh. When big names like Romney and Santorum accurse the president of being "unchecked by the constitution" and "assailing our freedom," it promotes wackos to do dangerous violent things. Google adkisson tennessee church, or james cummings dirty bomb, and see the horrible things from the 2008 election. This election cycle could be worse, with this pure hate speech coming out of Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and others.
What "Right Wing Violence"?
I know a lot of Democrats who are violently angry about abortion clinics. The Democratic base is in the inner cities full of "minorities" known for violence, and in the "Bible Belt", also known for dry counties and the like. Most of the Democrats I know are hunters and die hard gun owners.
Giffords attacker was angry because she was not liberal enough.
The Republican farmers aren't out shooting at anybody. They are too busy trying to support their families.
As if the wealthy are all Republicans. That's B.S. Most Jewish people are Democrats, who are the wealthiest in congress, Democrats by a long shot. Most movie Stars and famous wealthy musicians are Democrats.
Most Republicans are middle class that need lower taxes to survive.
Democrats have started most of our wars. Wilson, FDR, Truman (Dropped the atomic bombs on Japan, Kennedy, LBJ.
Nixon ended Viet Nam and ended the draft.
I ASK AGAIN, WHAT RIGHT WING VIOLENCE?
Thank you for the common sense, sonar - it seems to be in short supply.
I also recall Kennedy was assinated by a Communist. The same event which started all of the Gun-Control Rubbish. Switzerland has an automatic rifle in the closets of many of its households, but you don't hear of the crime level there. Switzerland does not have capital punishment, either... doesn't need it..... with all of those rifles in the hands of all of those regular "Johanns, Jacques, and Giannes", Crooks and invaders think twice...
Just a little history: Kennedy only sent advisers to Viet Nam, because he had actually studied the situation and knew it was a no-win situation. It was LBJ who escalated the war (that had been started by Eisenhower), because he was told that it could be ended quickly. And Nixon more than doubled the American deaths, and also started war in Cambodia, which later led to the killing fields. Nixon is no hero in this.
Now let's talk about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, the outing of Valerie Plame who had been in charge of intelligence in that area and whose sources (before she was outed) had said no such weapons.
Sometimes wars cannot be avoided, but the facts are the facts. Do you really think that Wilson started WWI? Or that America was as involved as say, France and England? The only reason that America helped out "over there" was that the situation had become so crazy; and the only problem was that when that war ended, the Armistice left Germany a wounded tiger. But after WWII, America helped to rebuild Europe so that it wouldn't start yet another war. We poured money into rebuilding Europe, while our own cities crumbled. But don't blame the "liberals" for that: if we hadn't, they probably would have soon started WWIII, what do you think the Cold War would have led to? Instead, blame those who bankrupted the American cities with loans and municipal bonds, and then put no money into the cities for investment, instead red-lining all the resources to the south and then outside of this country, building wonderful factories overseas. You really know the history if you look beyond the propaganda and look at the historical records.
This woman is hated by the Alex Jones/conspiracy nut set. Some intrepid reporter might want to look into that, as it's likely the reason for the attack.
On second thought, no. Clearly a false flag operation. Mind your fluoride.
She fought the Republican cuts in education spending, so of course illegal aliens would hate her, and firebomb her office.
Right wing logic.
Surprise Surprise a Democratic State Senator fire bombed in Texas. Looks like the right wingers inspired someone to take up their cause.
Can someone give me the name of a crazed liberal who attacked a Republican politician because of a difference in political beliefs? I admit I'm not informed on everything political, but I can't think of a time when that has happened. Now, how many times in recent history has a crazed conservative attacked a politician over political differences? Sorry, I have to add the score. I'm interested in facts, not beliefs.
Before we all go off the deep end and Damn every conservative, you might want the wait for the investigation to finish. and Democrats have been attacked by other things than Republicans.
President Kennedy was killed by a Communist - and I would bet on Nikita's orders (Kennedy DID make Khrushchev look like a fool) Bobby was killed by a Jordanian Leftist.
Congressman Leon Ryan was murdered by a People's Temple operative - who had ties to the Soviet Union.
Congresswoman Giffords was shot by an Anarchist. (Anarchists are hardly GOP)
I am not interested in scores, not am I interested in who is "right" or who is "wrong"... I am interested in trating each other with respect.
Cheers....
Loughner is not an anarchist. He's a far-right, anti-fed, Alex Jones-loving kook.
Hendricks: As I said before, know your history.
Kennedy was killed by a communist, who had been instructed to do so because Kennedy was trying to convert Castro away from communism, which nobody since Kennedy bothered to try to do. Bobby was killed by a Jordanian, which is what they used to call Palestinians, because of the support of the liberals for Israel. The "People's Temple" was its own crazy organiztion: Jim Jones was hardly "connected" to anything but his own dangerous fantasy life. What sort of hate speech over the radio, TV, books do you think influenced the shooter of Giffords? Your score is tainted by a strong conservative bias. There are so many quotes from conservatives that promote violence, but then they claim that those who follow their orders are acting alone or are obviously leftest-anarchist.
But I am really wondering here something more fundamental. When Reagan was shot (by a young Republican), everybody was upset, including myself; everybody cried. Where are your tears for this fire-bombing? Why are you writing posts to justify any of this, as if it is some sort of partisan game? Where is your compassion for your elected public servants? Are there no cries from conservatives denouncing this violent behavior?
dary
You should read the definition of anarchists.
anarchist [ËænÉkɪst]
n
1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a person who advocates the abolition of government and a social system based on voluntary cooperation
2. a person who causes disorder or upheaval
anarchistic adj
Now how does that relate to the TEA Party? They aren't calling for the abolition of Government just a smaller Gov't intrusion into their lives.
Have you seen any of the Anarchist signs at a TEA Party Rally? Have you seen them at the Occupy Rallies?
Fire Sprinklers:
have no political party affiliations, but they do save lives & property
a great reason to have them at work or at home
Willard Mitt Romney was born Willardo Macho Romeo by a Mexican mother and a French father in Mexico in 1947. His Father's distant cousin (George Romney) took him in when he was a teenager, changed his name to Willard Mitt Romney (the Willard was an homage to his friend Willard "Bill" Marriott the CEO of Marriott Intl.) And obtained a fake Michigan Birth certificate for the young boy in a plan to one day install him as President of the United States so as to destroy the country to complete '' Montezuma's revenge ''.
God help us all! It is only March and it is beginning how many more of this kind of thing we will see till Nov.
Our lives, our country and our integrity is at risk and if we soon do not get off this bit about “no compromise” on any issue we are going to end up regretting it.
What are theses elections really for; I thought they were for the betterment of the whole country and everyone in it. Not just one group or other, not just the red or blue, not just the top 1% or 99% but all of us.
All these elections are doing is turning family against family, neighbor against neighbor, and the rich against the poor. Where is “We are our brothers keeper”, that created this great country that everyone worked together to built.
No wonder other country scoff democracy we can’t even run it right ourselves.
Thank you! and bless you for showing some sense... cheers
Well we see that the right wing can inspire someone., again its for the wrong cause!
Terrorist act. In it's purest form. But since they weren't muslim, it's just some jerk with a molotov cocktail. Nothing to see here.
"Terrorist" *rolls eyes* Uhg... this again. It's like 2002 all over again. Do we really need to demonize a nutter who started a fire with the same word we use to describe the folks who murdered us by the thousands on 911? Are the specific words 'arsonist', 'mass-murderer", and "hijacker" not bad enough that we have to try to combine them all together in one scary word that can also be applied to pre-teen crank callers who make bomb threats? Can't we just hate each offender individually, on the merits of his individual crime, without having to streamline our hatred and direct it all at a big convenient "terrorist" hodge-podge of hateability?
If a terrorist throws a molotov cocktail and kills one person, or misses and doesn't manage to kill anybody, he or she is still a terrorist.
And yes, there is something to see here. All those who keep inciting rioting, violence, hatred, are to blame, and should have all their book, TV, radio, lecture, internet profits taken away for profiting from criminal behavior.
Based on the demographics of her opponants, this was most likely the work of a conservative. Given the 'Epic Fail' of the perpetrator's desired outcome, this is just one more example of the fact that conservatives just can't do anything right!!
Disclaimer: The preceeding statement is obviously an attempt at sarcasm, humor, etc. (perhaps not in the best taste) so consider that before the backlash begins......
When the crazed pilot who was mad at the IRS flew his plane into a Federal Building in Texas almost immediately the left and the media claimed he did so because of his right wing beliefs only to find out later that the pilot was a registered Democrat.
Imagine That!
The pilot may have been as "registered democrat" - as you say - but I would put money on it he was more of a Dixiecrat aka: Reagan Democrat whom we would label a DINO - whose vote went to McCain in 2008. Fact remains, most of all the domestic terrorism that occurs in this country occurs as the hands of heavily-armed rightwing zealots - like Timothy McVeigh or fundamentalist christian sex perverts with a Messiah Complex - like David Koresh. FYI: McVeigh specifically told the FBI he was heavily influenced by the "firey" rhetoric of Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the National Rats-A$$holes (NRA) who claimed President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, was using the power of the federal government to take his gun rights away. LaPierre ramped down his trash talking after the Oklahoma City bombing, but has recently begun to ratchet it up again with the election of President Obama.
I am a member of NRA. You know nothing of me, who I am and what type of person I am. Drop the National Rats-A$$holes! Tell me your beliefs whereas I can call you names for them?
