Trayvon Martin supporters urged to send Skittles to police chief

Protesters hold cans of ice tea and Skittles which is what the 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is reported to have been carrying when he was killed by neighborhood watch person, George Zimmerman.

Updated at 8:09 a.m. ET: The death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old shot earlier this month by a neighborhood watch volunteer, has prompted a protest aimed at the police department that initially investigated the case. The weapon: Skittles.

A campaign mounted through Facebook and Twitter is asking people to mail packages of the candy to Bill Lee, police chief of the Sanford Police Department, which released the man who shot Martin after questioning. The campaign has been touted at the DailyKos.com and theurbandaily.com.

They’ve chosen Skittles because that’s what Martin was carrying when George Zimmerman, 28, spotted Martin, a black teen who was walking home from a convenience store at night in a gated community. Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense after a confrontation.

Mom: Trayvon Martin was killed because of 'the color of his skin'

The Sanford City Commission passed a vote of "no confidence" in police Chief Bill Lee Wednesday night over his handling of the Trayvon Martin shooting. Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators assembled a "Million Hoodie March" in New York City to call for the arrest of Martin's killer. NBC's Lilia Luciano reports.

Martin’s death set off protests around the United States from people demanding that Zimmerman’s actions be investigated. More than 818,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org, a social action website, calling for his arrest, Reuters reported.

At a rally Wednesday evening in New York attended by Martin's parents, protesters held signs decorated with Skittles.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Skittles said: "We are deeply saddened by the news of Trayvon Martin's death and express our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We also respect their privacy and feel it inappropriate to get involved or comment further as we would never wish for our actions to be perceived as an attempt of commercial gain following this tragedy.”

Savannah Guthrie, TODAY's legal correspondent, and Star Jones, a former prosecutor, discuss whether public outrage over the Trayvon Martin shooting will lead to the arrest of his killer, neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

Responding to the outcry, the Florida state attorney announced Tuesday that a grand jury would investigate the teen’s death.

The thing that bothers me is why in the hell does there need to be a grand jury investigation on a person who intentionally ran down a young man minding his own buisness and killed him, the only thing the grand jury needs to investigate is that Police dept. who thinks its ok to kill people innocent people and not do any thing about it, those are the ones who need to be arrested and charged along with that piece of chit zimmerman.

I can't begin to understand how anyone can claim that the "Stand Your Ground" law had nothing to do with the situation. The law is the reason this low-life, anatomically challenged piece of crap isn't in jail right now. A bad law is his sole defense.

Stand Your Ground. The men and women who voted for this law created the shooter. The citizens who voted for these idiots are indirectly responsible. Stand Your Ground is the first instruction in fearing the other.Take a good hard look at yourself America---get rid of your guns. Treat all life as valuable as your own. Stop worrying so much about safety, worry more about worrying too much. Worrying makes you stupid enough to kill an innocent person.

so when someone who doesnt treat my life as valuably as I treat my own confronts me with bad intentions, i should just take it? i should quit worrying about my basic human needs of being safe and ensuring my own survival? just give that up and put that responsibility in someone else's hands? worrying about your safety doesn't make you stupid, but not worrying about it sure does. there should never be legislation regarding a so-called right to self-defense, its a basic responsibility of all living beings, and a government has no right telling you that you are allowed to defend yourself. people who fail to take responsibility for their own survival don't deserve to survive...

just another stupid comment on "stand your ground" that is total devoid of reality...

Well, all of you non-gun owners put signs out front saying your house has no firearms. I'll sleep better at night, knowing the druggies, criminals, etc will be at your house, robbing and raping and killing you.

I have the right to protect myself, and my property, using what ever force necessary to do so. I would rather be judged by 12 people, instead of being carried by six people.

BD and Sally Ann I agree with protecting your family and home but to go out onto the street and act as a total idiot with a big head is not right. This man was only trying to be a hero and it backfired on him. He needs to go to jail for the crime he committed. So if I go to Florida and someone thinks I looked at them wrong they can shoot me. Nope not gonna happen. Keep your guns for personal protection but get rid of the stupid law that gives you the right to shoot anyone and claim self defense.

The death of Trayvon at Zimmerman's hands is certainly tragic. It is my hope that a grand jury will indict Zimmerman and that this case will go to trial.

I am sure that Zimmerman has lawyered up and that he and his counsel are concocting a defense as we all ponder what actually happened in this case.

I contend that one needs to consider the spirit of the law when applying "stand your ground" and that leaving a position of safety as Zimmerman had assumed in his vehicle, and giving chase to someone who had not commited a crime, and having been expressly instructed by a police dispatcher not to do so, that all such actions do not support the spirit of the law and certainly make questionable any claim to self defense.

I am so proud of the way people have reacted! Sending Skittles may not solve anything. However, people are trying to do something to make a statement in a non violent manner. They are taking the opposite approach of what this gun man did and the American people should look at this reaction.

I agree with you. I think he should be arrested. I do not see where he had any reason to shoot this young man.

Skittle protestors, keep at it with the non violence protesting. I expect Martin Luther King, Gandhi, John F Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy are all saying, "Way to go, guys!" I have not looked for a comment from President Obama. However, I think he should make a statement and applaud you. You are trying to do the right thing. That is important to the survival of this country.

This man needs to put into prison for killing an innocent child nothing more nothing less.

Well heck man...according to phil and others who support murder of kids none of us is safe if someone with a gun can construe some impossible situtation in his mind any killing would be justified..

For instance...every black now knows Zimmerman is gunning for them...is it not ok for an armed black man to just shoot this guy down because we all know he is a danger to them? He has threatened them, he has stalked them, he seems to have a woody for them...

Keep those cards and Skittles coming. Skittles are manufactured by Marrs whose plant is located in my city. The more Skittles sold, the more jobs for locals to keep up with demand. As sick as it may seem to some, this incident should prove that one doesn't have to be a millionaire to be a job creator. The Sanford police department has unwitting helped in that effort.

            Reply#64 - Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:01 AM EDT

With all the federal regulation out there on sugary drinks and candy, brandishing a soft drink and Skittles could be considered a dangerous threat. There were no outside witnesses to what happened; all we currently have is Zimmerman's version of the event; so the police are doing exactly what they should, they investigate and turn over to the DA who is calling a grand jury. Meanwhile Zimmerman is out (he'd be out on bail if he was arrested). In my own community we've had 5 Blacks gunned down by other Blacks in the past month, no protests, no witnesses, no Al Sharpton. It's perfectly alright for a Balck man to kill another and no one cares. That's the crime.

That's right. A person of african descent can call another one a @!$%#, but if I should call them that I would have my comment collapsed, and likely have my account suspended too.

Stand your ground? In this case against what or who? The young man was not threatening the shooter or his property so there was no reason for him to fire his gun. What he should have done was "stand down" and let the young man walk on his way. Now two families are destroyed and for what? I pray that God will pour out a spirit of peace and that there will be justice.

                  Peace.

This man is just full of pure bullcrap!!! His fears of blacks and over zealous feeling of being an officer of the law made him committ murder. He is lying through his teeth when he says he felt threatened. He wrongly killed this innocent young man and he needs to be a man and stand up and say I acted wrongly and need to be punsihed for my crime. If he does not have the balls to do that then the justice systems needs to have the balls to arresst him and charge him with murder and see to it that he gets the severest punishment possible. He is a murderer and should pay for his CRIME!!!!!

The police chief needs to be arrested for hindering a crime investigation, find him guilty and throw him in jail with the real criminals. That is where this policeman needs to be. Florida legislative members it is time to review this stupid assed law and get it off the books before you have men killing their wives and claiming that they felt threatened and vice versa. Kids in school might have a fight with another student of teacher and shoot them claiming they felt threatened. Get rid of the Police Chief and the stupid, idiotic law NOW.

The person should not have been in that GATED neighborhood! He went to the store to get skittles and decide to cut through the GATED neighborhood to see what he could steal. The neighborhood probably has alot of retired older people that are vunerable to young people like this person. He shouldn't have been there and the guy that shot him should not prosecuted.

Jim, why don't you go to NYC? They have some of the most restrictive firearms laws, so you should feel safe walking down any one of the streets, maybe in Harlem, at any hour of the night.

If it was not for tourism most of the people in Florida would not have jobs. Tourists make up most of the income and budget for the state of Florida. So in other words if thousands of us refuse to go to Florida that means less state income and your taxes will go up along with a lot of people out of work. So yes me and thousands of others cancelling our plans for vacation there and bringing in our millions of dollars would have a huge impact on your state. PS I have been to NYC and had no problems there.

it's settled. we've got eyewitness accounts and thorough media reports that say this Zimmerman came racing out of his vehicle full of rage, screaming "get out of here you dirty negro", guns blazing and bullets flying. undercover video tape showing he paid off the police chief to not investigate. open and shut case. cold blooded vigilante murderer and his police chief co-hort hanging out at the local bar laughing about it. America take notice of the signs at the Florida state line that says "Florida, home of "stand your ground" negros beware"

are people serious? why dont we let the authorities investigate this tragedy in accordance with the laws, and quit buying into the emotion, propaganda, and media reporting? none of us have the facts, only partial accounts fed to us. and most are clueless about the law...

What I want to know is why all the outrage for this, when the weekend before on the south side of Chicago a 6 year old girl shot dead while playing in her own yard. In fact 10 shot dead and 39 wounded in a 48 hour period! Where is the outrage? Al Sharpton gets involved only when it suits his racist agenda.
