Zimmerman did not "stand his ground" ... he stalked and shot an unarmed man in cold blood. Trayvon Martin would have been justified in shooting Zimmerman if the 17-year had been armed, not the other way around. Martin did nothing but walk down the street and Zimmerman used his own delusional fears to justify a shooting that has no justification.

Why Jeb Bush? He didn't sign any law that gave someone a right to stalk another person and then murder them! Stand your ground in no way permits this. Even the writers of the bill say that it does not permit this type of incident. It does permit one to use just force to stop a rape in a public place from occurring or intervene to prevent a child from being murdered on the street without worry that you'll go to jail for doing the right thing. If FL laws were applied appropriately this guy would be in jail or out on bail at the moment and awaiting a trial.

To all the commentators saying the black community only protests when a white person kills a black person. You are mistaken. Those events get limited news coverage, if any. I recall people of all races being outraged at the Casey Anthony verdict. The facts here indicated that a non-arrest would be another miscarriage of justice.

I don't know if any of you listened to the 911 tape of Zimmerman, allegedly saying he felt threatened. But if you do listen it, it is chillingly disgusting this man went out with the intentions of killing someone. Apparently, this "boy" was beating him in the face with a can of something and when the police arrived, the man was bleeding from his face and nose. Maybe we could rustle up a picture of the shooter when he was twelve years old.

Sometimes I feel the minority, soon to be majority, community have the "market" cornered on unfair practice by law enforcement. I am a "white male" and have more than once felt and have been taken advantaged of and abused by the "alpha male" adrenaline filled enforcement officer.

Its not OK to get your rights denied or ignored by those who swear to uphold the law. It's a sad truth that, to "serve and protect," is a slogan and not a practice -- it's been proven by case law that Law Enforcement have no legal standing to be liable if they fail to protect the people.

Stand your ground law is a sound law, and I agree with it; however the evidence is not there that Mr. Zimmerman acted in self defense, even without the call to Mr. Martins girlfriend, without the witnesses audible evidence, without the 911 calls -- in my opinion the 17 year old boy did not pose a life threatening circumstance to claim self defense by lethal force.

What upsets me; showing pictures of Mr. Martin at a younger age. The media calling Mr. Zimmerman white; although if he identified as white that's excusable. Insinuating the stand your ground law is to blame. Mr. Zimmerman escalated the situation to the point of killing an innocent victim and needs to man up and face his unjust killing of this young man.

I hope the family, and local community can somehow find peace; it won't be easy -- but look within, look within the WHOLE community for peace. I hope that most reasonable people can understand the loss that happened to the community. We don't need more hate, we need acceptance and understanding with our neighbors. We need to come together and F'ing get along -- support one another.

First Martin was 6'3" and secondly the eye witness said it was Zimmerman yelling for help and it was Zimmerman on the ground being attack by Martin. So Martins family is lying through their teeth saying that it was Martin screaming for help they know full well it was not.

Plus if you go back and read the first reports put out by MSNBC Martin's father did not know anything had happened to his son until 7am the next morning, he was gone for over 12hrs and they didn't think to call him, go looking for him or call police to report him missing for 12 hours. Why is that??????????

Yesterday's thread had the first post deleted because the moderator said it was "smearing all black folks." Which I didn't get that, but the post did bring up the very important FACT that the black community was making this something that has, at this point, not been proven. Then today's article had this.

Sounds like yesterday's poster was spot on. No one, in the protest crowd, or even on this thread have any first person experience with this case, yet, they have tried and convicted Zimmerman, solely based on the only fact they have, that Treyvon is black and his killer is not. The rest of the events are still in conflict, and have not yet been sorted out. And the Police, who were there at the scene, have been raked over the coals since they didn't automatically arrest the shooter. They have stated, that based on physical evidence at that time, they had no cause to arrest, yet, people who have no contact with the case at all are claiming they're wrong. The protesters are trampling due process underfoot in favor of their own agenda. Would they still be protesting as intently if the skin colors would have been reversed?

Our country is going down a bad road, where "special justice and benefits" are meted out for "special groups," while those on the opposite side of the street do not receive the same benefits the special groups do. And many times those not in the special group are walking on eggshells, scared of the special groups and their faux superiority and hatred toward those who are not just like them.

IMO, this is what you get when more and more in our country turn away from God. It is not a good thing.

BTW - We have CBS on this morning and yet ANOTHER day of Treyvon being the first thing on in the morning. Yet, other current cases where whites are the victims, not a peep. ENOUGH ALREADY!

P.S. I know my comment will be collapsed, but at least, I've finally had the opportunity to tell the truth as I have to live it. Not as others pretend it to be. If Zimmerman thought Trayvon was suspicious simply because he was a black male walking around, then yes, it does make this racially motivated. Let's not forget this fact: Zimmerman had no official authority from any governing body. He was a self-appointed watchmen, which makes him a vigilante if he's going to detain, apprehend or arrest people. Zimmerman had no business doing what he was doing. It's perfectly fine to watch and report as any lawful citizen has the right, but you cannot act as the police period.

What you "forgot" to include was that he was only 140 lbs. He was just a kid beginning to grow into his now maturing body. His height from his growth spurt had to have been very recent since his body didnt have a chance to get his weight to where his height warranted it.

He was in high school still ... and the football photo was most likely from last fall since it was used. It was probably the last good photo taken of the child alone without his family members all around him. He was a kid just in the tween years between being a boy and an adult ... his body was maturing and not there yet. How many kids in their second yr of high school look so much like a grammar school kid, but upon graduation, are adult sized enough to join the military. Treyvon was on his way becoming an adult. Zimmerman robbed him of that ... and his Senior Year with all the gala that goes with graduation: his degree, his prom, his senior week celebrations with his school celebrating his and his classmates' future now that they were graduating. Zimmerman robbed Treyvon of his future because of his paranoia and racism (if he wasnt a racist, he wouldnt have used the N word combined with a swear referring to Treyvon while on the phone with 911 or only called about suspicious "men" whose only crimes were walking where he could see them while black.

If Treyvon was like me, my friends, my kids, my neices and nephews ... family photo time was to be avoided at all costs or a nice spot in the back of the group (unless forced forward like I was way too often) was a good hiding spot. Family pictures were consistently overimposed on all my holidays and vacations since we had to send them to my grandparents and other relatives in Italy. Not only did I learn to sneak into the back as often as possible as a child ... once I became an adult, I learned how to avoid them like the plague. My brothers love to take photos of me when I dont see their cameras coming because it is highly unlikely I will be in a photo unless forced to do so or it is the rare professionally done school, graduation or family portraits.

My husband was 6'1". When he was 185 lbs, his waist was size 32. My brother in law is 6'4" and his son, my nephew, is 6'3". When my nephew began "spurting" at 16 yrs old, he gained his height rapidly and his weight couldnt keep up with him. My nephew was still a kid, just now a very skinny kid whose body went up before the weight could catch up with his growth. Treyvon was just a kid growing and maturing like all kids do. My 3rd child, a daughter who is now 30, has been 5'10" and in womens' shoe size 10 (very hard to find until the last decade) since she was 11 ... she is taller than most women (thanks to her dad's side of the family) and has been since 11. That didnt change the fact she was only 11 AND A CHILD. Thank God I am only 5'2", or she would have been taller. Adult height of a child is dependant on the averaged heights of the biological parents combined with good nutrition and good health - that is basic genetics any one learns in bio 101. I used the formula when she was a year old and it predicted her to be 5' 10 1/2" ... it was right with the statement +/- a half inch without using the bone age (which doctors use when utilizing this formula) unless a bone disease interferes with normal growth. All my children were within 1/2 inch of the predicted height I calculated for them when they were 1 yr old.

In Sanford, police have cited the Stand Your Ground law in their decision not to arrest a neighborhood watch volunteer in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17. A Seminole County grand jury will decide on whether the man who shot Trayvon, George Zimmerman, 28, should face homicide charges.

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla -- A Collier County teen who stabbed a classmate to death
will not face murder charges.

A judge ruled Jorge Saavedra acted in
self-defense when he killed a classmate at a Golden Gate bus stop last year.

In an eight page written ruling, Collier County Judge Lauren Brodie says
15-year-old Jorge Saavedra "had more than enough reason to believe he was in
danger of death or great bodily harm," when he stabbed his classmate,
16-year-old Dylan Nuno to death.

Saavedra's Defense Attorney Donald Day
says, "there really are no winners out of this today. It's a tragedy all the way
around. The Saavedra family feels terrible about the incident."

In the
eight page ruling, Judge Brodie cites testimony given by more than a dozen
teenage witnesses who saw the fight. She also referenced Saavedra's history of
avoiding the school bus all together to stay out of harms way.

Attorney
Donald Day says, "the facts were consistent. There was a group of boys
harrassing Mr. Saavedra, repeatedly threatening Mr. Saavedra, on the day this
incident happened, not one boy, but a group of boys had threatened physical
violence."

Judge Brodie wrote even though Saavedra had a pocket knife
and showed it to two other students riding the bus on the day of the stabbing,
he avoided the fight repeatedly and "was attacked from the first punch from Nuno
to the moment he used his knife in self-defense."

Self defense is hard to disprove.

Damage, I heard one of his neighbors talking about him and he said he was a good man but this amounted to a perfect storm waiting to happen. They had a series of break ins involving young black males and Zimmerman was one angry fellow, and this could be seen in all his calls to 911.

At the point that this kid was doing nothing but walking down the street, when he started pursuing him, he became the aggressor. This situation did not need to happen and had he followed the guidelines of the neighborhood watch and what the 911 operator told him, this kid would be alive. I am not nearly saying this is cold blooded first degree murder but I am sorry, the one who stood his ground and defended himself if anything was the kid.

Obviously the entire case was completely handled inappropriately, they had the information to identify him almost immediately and didn't. They did drug testing on him but not the person who shot him? The police screwed up and hopefully it will be investigated and justice will come of it but at the very least he deserved for this to be investigated properly.

Also the police according to republican lawmakers in Florida interpreted this law wrong, and this is not a case of stand your ground. They really need to review the wording because it sounds like open season on black people and I doubt that is the intent of the law but its what it has made it.

As a white RN, I hear things that AA don't hear. Nearly all of the white RN's I worked with told me NOT to stop at any of the local gas stations or Walgreens because it was a dangerous area (ie. mostly black neighborhood) around the hospital. This was in Dayton, at a Catholic hospital. I continued to stop at local establishments because they were as deserving of my money as any other. I'm not afraid of people because of the color of their skin. I worked night shifts. One morning I was driving home and it was freezing with the wind whipping. I saw a young man at a bus stop with only a sweatshirt on. He was nearly in a ball trying to protect himself from the cold. As a mother, I knew he'd walked out the door without thinking about the weather. I pulled off the road and walked to the bus stop and gave him my Columbia gloves. I told him that his mother probably didn't want him out in the weather to freeze to death. This wasn't an isolated incident for me. I have teen/young adult kids. When are we going to move past this thinking that all people of color are up to no good? These young people are our future!! We need to treat them well and if they're in trouble help them. Young black men have worries that young white men don't have. It should NOT be this way! Kids are kids, and we need to start acting like that so that "driving while black" and "walking while black" lose their meaning.

unfortunately in FL you are correct. The flawed law does not make mention of being an aggressor. Someone could in theory walk into a local Starbucks and start trouble utter the words "lets take it outside" end up on the losing end of a knockdown drag out fist fight, rolls over and blows the other individual away because "they feared for their life or serous injury". So it does not matter in FL who started it. The politicians always talk to the current audience. That last part is NOT IN THE LAW. It is a law intended to mimic other states laws on "Castle Doctrine". They left part of it out by error intent. Colorado has one of the more "protect the shooter" laws and even they have built in that you CANNOT be the one to start the situation. Even running your mouth or flipping someone off COULD be considered starting things. FL has "Stand Your Ground" Colorado has "Make My Day". Perhaps they need to swap nicknames from the sounds of things.

Neighborhood Watch's are not vigilantes. They "watch" and notify police of suspicious people/circumstances. He crossed a line when he disobeyed there dispatcher's instructions not to follow Martin and to allow the police in route to handle the situation.

Trayvon appears to have been an athlete, dressed in a football uniform in at least one photo. I refer you to a 9 year old dieing at that hands of another 9 year old girl in Longbeach CA just last month after fight... see story here. If a 9 year old can kill with HER bare hands I am sure a 18 or 28 year old male can manage the same or more.

Are you disputing the FACT that Trayvon was on the football team at some point? That he was a young HEALTHY person? That Zimmerman is fat and out of shape? umm I think they finished their investigation and had handed it over to the DA. That isn't exactly the PD closing the case. They couldn't find a LEGAL reason to arrest or detain Zimmerman and referred (passed the buck) up the food chain. I submit to the jury that the prosecution has no evidence that the defendant fired the fatal bullet. Your Honor I move that the charges be dismissed for lack of evidence."

To the best of my READING I have not seen where Zimmerman was ever arrested so NO on the reading of rights. I am not sure where(location) he was questioned.. haven't found anything specific on that. Presuming he was NOT taken to a police facility as his gun was not taken from him. I would GUESS the police had temporary possession as one story stated Zimmerman had his hands up when police arrived and they would not allow someone to retain a gun until they determined he was not a threat to them. Police have a sense of self preservation at the very least.

Your new questions I defer to the police as only THEY have those answers currently. Feel free to answer mine to you or pose more of your own. I never claimed to have ALL the answers but I would hope you can answer what YOUR objective is or are you just keeping with the larger crowd and throwing stuff against the wall and waiting to see what sticks. Hearing the eye witness and the journalist on the link you provided, I can understand now why the police are holding off. This is going to be a really long drawn out case. The witness is on video saying Zimmerman was on the ground being beaten up and yelling to him for help and then when the witness went upstairs to call 911, he heard a shot, and then looked down to see the man doing the beating lying on the ground dead.

It looks like this is going to be a long drawn out case.

perhaps you failed to see Zimmermans photo or READ anything? Zimmerman is Hispanic not German. Zimmerman does NOT have a felony conviction. If he did he could not obtain a concealed carry nor possess a gun legally. How do you know WHAT grades Trayvon was getting? The school was asked by the parents to keep this a private matter so it was NOT from an unbiased source. There is no "aggressor" section in the Stand Your Ground statute. Please show us WHERE the aggressor section is. If you want the letter of the LAW followed then FOLLOW the letter of the law.

776.013 Home protection; use of deadly force; presumption of fear of death or great bodily harm.—
(1) A person is presumed to have held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another when using defensive force that is intended or likely to cause death or great bodily harm to another if:
(a) The person against whom the defensive force was used was in the process of unlawfully and forcefully entering, or had unlawfully and forcibly entered, a dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle, or if that person had removed or was attempting to remove another against that person’s will from the dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle; and
(b) The person who uses defensive force knew or had reason to believe that an unlawful and forcible entry or unlawful and forcible act was occurring or had occurred.
(2) The presumption set forth in subsection (1) does not apply if:
(a) The person against whom the defensive force is used has the right to be in or is a lawful resident of the dwelling, residence, or vehicle, such as an owner, lessee, or titleholder, and there is not an injunction for protection from domestic violence or a written pretrial supervision order of no contact against that person; or
(b) The person or persons sought to be removed is a child or grandchild, or is otherwise in the lawful custody or under the lawful guardianship of, the person against whom the defensive force is used; or
(c) The person who uses defensive force is engaged in an unlawful activity or is using the dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle to further an unlawful activity; or
(d) The person against whom the defensive force is used is a law enforcement officer, as defined in s. 943.10(14), who enters or attempts to enter a dwelling, residence, or vehicle in the performance of his or her official duties and the officer identified himself or herself in accordance with any applicable law or the person using force knew or reasonably should have known that the person entering or attempting to enter was a law enforcement officer.
(3) A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.
(4) A person who unlawfully and by force enters or attempts to enter a person’s dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle is presumed to be doing so with the intent to commit an unlawful act involving force or violence.
(5) As used in this section, the term:
(a) “Dwelling” means a building or conveyance of any kind, including any attached porch, whether the building or conveyance is temporary or permanent, mobile or immobile, which has a roof over it, including a tent, and is designed to be occupied by people lodging therein at night.
(b) “Residence” means a dwelling in which a person resides either temporarily or permanently or is visiting as an invited guest.
(c) “Vehicle” means a conveyance of any kind, whether or not motorized, which is designed to transport people or property.

776.041 Use of force by aggressor. —The justification described in the preceding sections of this chapter is not available to a person who:

(1) Is attempting to commit, committing, or escaping after the commission of, a forcible felony; or

(2) Initially provokes the use of force against himself or herself, unless:

(a) Such force is so great that the person reasonably believes that he or she is in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm and that he or she has exhausted every reasonable means to escape such danger other than the use of force which is likely to cause death or great bodily harm to the assailant; or

(b) In good faith, the person withdraws from physical contact with the assailant and indicates clearly to the assailant that he or she desires to withdraw and terminate the use of force, but the assailant continues or resumes the use of force.
