'Rats' redux? Santorum campaign ad appears to link Obama with Ahmadinejad

Rick Santorum's presidential campaign appears to have released a new video that subliminally links President Barack Obama with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

M. Alex Johnson

M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for msnbc.com. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

The video, titled "Obamaville," is a 65-second-long production that presents bleak images of an America in dire economic and social straits, interspersed with scenes of international unrest. Prominent among those is a segment showing images of protests and violence in Iran, featuring pictures of Ahmadinejad. It doesn't include the mandatory "I'm Rick Santorum and I approved this message" tagline that would be necessary if it were intended to air on television.

The video was posted Friday on the Santorum campaign's YouTube page, where it was marked as "unlisted," meaning you can't access it without a special link. But you should still be able to see it on a Twitter account identified as belonging to Michael Biundo, Santorum's campaign manager.

Biundo didn't respond to a request for comment Friday night.

The ad also was published by National Review Online, which touted it as an exclusive "first look at Rick Santorum's latest ad."

At the 40-second mark, an image of Ahmadinejad is shown on a small TV screen. For less than a half-second, the picture flashes to a similarly framed picture of Obama before returning to the Iranian dictator.

At full speed, it looks like a tiny video glitch or small lightning strike, but if you slow down the video, the image of Obama is clear in individual frames:

Reached by NBC News on Friday night, Hogan Gidley, a Santorum spokesman, said it is "absurd" to think the ad is likening Obama to Ahmadinejad.

"If Ahmadinejad gets a nuclear weapon, then we're obviously going to deal with the fallout and coverage of that," Gidley said. "All we're going to be seeing is images of him and the president. We were trying to illustrate that."

And Politico reported that John Brabender, the media consultant who made the video, also denied there was an attempt to conflate Obama and Ahmadinejad. Brabender told Politico that the video is part of an eight-part web series that will run on the Santorum website in two weeks focusing on specific Obama policies.

The ad in some ways is reminiscent of one produced by the Republican National Committee for George W. Bush in 2000, in which the word "RATS" briefly appeared on the screen in a reference to Al Gore's health care proposals before resolving into the word "BUREAUCRATS" at the 25-second mark.

Here are the frames in question:

YouTube.com

That ad was pulled after Democrats complained that it was a subliminal insult about Gore, a charge that the RNC and the Bush campaign denied.

NBC News' Andrew Rafferty contributed to this report.

No surprise there. Santorum is almost as screwy as Pat Robertson.

Obviously they remember the earlier subliminal ads from the Bush/Gore time. It's pretty low to resort to ads like this, but we had to put up with the swift boat ads also, so it's no surprise that they're doing it. The sad part about the web is they can, while denying accountability because "it isn't running on TV".

I would have figured they would use Greece in such a message, Not Iran. But then, Greece is more about people having promised benefits reduced where Iran is about radical leadership supressing it's population through force and propaganda.

Then again, a lot of conservatives see Obama's BC mandate being forced upon the church as no different than Ahmadinejad and the mullah's forcing their brand of sharia law on their citizens.

Then there is Mittens from the HASBRO collection who sees this whole thing as some kind of a rich mans game. Oh lies are OK, after all it's just politics. That's the way it works. Well maybe that's what he really believes but I know many good and decent Republicans and they too see the delima of electing such a man who's entire life is about big money. So much so that he hides it overseas and claim not to have any knowledge of it because it's in a blind trust. Right and he has no input into his super-pack either. The SC sold this democracy out to the highest bidders and much of this money may be from out of this country. He is involved into all sorts of mulitnation businesses in his so called Blind trust. Just look at Mittens campaign and tell me the election isn't being bought. Any Questions?

The man wants to sell himself at Christ's expense. That's Sickening. That is precisely why there is a separation of church and state no matter what the religion may be. We are all Americans first and foremost and this is still America based on that fundamental Right. Rick needs to get out of every-ones personal life and either be a politician or disciple, but not both. No one can, and that is for certain in America. Only a fool thinks otherwise. That is American patriotism.

While I'm a follower of Christ (and I'm sure poorly at best), I don't want anyone selling my savior for their own personal power, anywhere! Not in Church, Politics or otherwise. Period! There is few other disgusts than this.

...the saddest thing of all is that you all actually believe the filth you spew about the GOP and conservatism in general...

...and you claim that conservatives are the ones blindly following a doctrine of hatred and intolerance?

Arieus equates Catholicism with NAMBLA. Really, a**wipe? How about you move out of your parent's basement, get a job and stop masturbating over photos of Obama?

Debbie conveniently forgets that the whole BC bs started when Obama tried to use his presidential power to force religious institutions to pay for something that many of them object to, then backed off and tried to make it a matter for the health insurance companies, which is still outside his boundaries as Chief Executive. But what the heck, he can make recess appointments while Congress is still in session, so why should a little thing like the Constitution slow him down?

Santrich seems to think that Santorum would force a woman to bear a rape baby to full term when he has said explicitly that a rape or incestuous abortionwould still be protected under his administration even if the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade. But then, he also seems to think that all rape babies are two-headed mutants. Put down the foil and the straw and slowly back away, my friend. Some nice young men in white coats will be by to take you on a lovely trip to the country real soon.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching how liberals operate in the last few years with their "Gotcha!" journalism, it's that whatever they say, or whatever they say YOU'VE said is nearly always the complete opposite of the truth.

What a sad state of affairs America is in today, and it is all because so many people lack common sense and are uneducated on what is really happening under the administration of the "Anointed" one. Only two posters to comment #1 are informed -- They are NeighborOfTheBeast and BrutisBear5. Great posts guys!

If Obama gets reelected, this country will be destroyed and it will take decades to undo the mess. All you liberals need to go and research HR 4646 being proposed by Obama and his minions. They plan to wait until after the election to push this bill. It is a 1% tax on every bank transaction everyone makes.

The government wants to take 1% of every check cashed, every account transfer, and every deposit regardless of whether it is electronic funds transfer, direct deposit, cash or by any other means. Do you liberals realize how this will hurt the poor, the middle class and our seniors on SS and other pension/retirement plans? Yes, the "Anointed" one wants to take another 1% of everything you have or earn. But, the liberals will say 1% is not much, but wait, once enacted this percentage can and will be increased over time. Wake up sheeple, anybody but Obama in November.

@raleigh dolly

Quite misleading. It's true (as of this writing) that there's a bill in the House of Representatives, the Debt Free America Act (H.R. 1125), which would impose a one percent tax on certain financial transactions if passed, and it's also true that the bill was introduced by a Democrat, Rep. Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania (who introduced more or less the same legislation in 2010 asH.R. 4646).

However, the legislation has zero co-sponsors, nor has it ever been acknowledged, let alone endorsed or supported, by anyone in the Obama administration.

Moreover, contrary to what is repeatedly claimed in the email, under the proposed legislation personal bank deposits would not be subject to subject to the tax. Section 4501(b)(2) of the current version of the bill reads as follows:

EXCEPTIONS- The term ‘specified transaction’ shall not include--
(A) any transfer between accounts of the taxpayer, and
(B) any deposit into a personal account of an individual.

Like all previous iterations of the Debt Free America Act, the 2011 version isn't expected to be voted on, let alone passed by Congress.

To the conservatives on this thread talking about Obama forcing religious institutions to pay for birth control -- WRONG. The mandate was simply that employers offering health insurance must offer plans that include contraceptive coverage. Newsflash -- religious institutions are often employers. They have to abide by the same rules as any other employer. You don't get to make your own laws or exceptions to laws based on a "right of conscience." Obama didn't tell religious institutions they have to support birth control. He simply said you can't DENY your employees birth control as a condition of employment.

But apparently for some people on the religious right, "freedom of religion" means the freedom to force your religious views on the rest of us.

Oh, and Raleigh - the financial transaction tax is for equity transactions, i.e. the stock market. Most other stock markets have a tax of this sort. Critics claim that it will drive companies to list on foreign exchanges. But when Britain instituted theirs, their stock exchanges GREW. So that's a load of crap. The transaction tax is a way to get wealthy people who make millions of dollars on the stock market, and pay only 15% tax on it by calling it "capital gains," to pay a little more. It will have no effect on your banking, check writing, etc. Besides, the bill is going nowhere, so relax.

Santorum is just as much a religious extremist as Ahmadinejad, and he's absolutely right about it being better to keep Obama in the White House than to replace him with any of the current GOP clown posse.

All well-founded opinions are welcome here, but organizations like Drudge and Gateway Pundit that exist for no other reason than to spread misinformation deserve to be called on their lies.

As for your demand for proof that Affordable Care won't use tax money to pay for abortions;

We don't agree. It's understandable that abortion foes opposed a proposal that gives more people the opportunity to obtain insurance that cover abortions. But it's another thing to say those abortion services would be paid with federal dollars. The Senate bill states very clearly that public funding through tax credits and government subsidies for elective abortion services offered in the exchange is prohibited. But more than that, the bill sets up a mechanism to ensure that abortion services offered in the exchange are paid entirely from patient premiums, premiums paid by people who have chosen a private plan that covers abortion. The executive order puts the weight of the president's word behind providing a way to ensure two checks go to insurers every month, so that abortion dollars and federal dollars are not commingled.

We think that's enough to back up Stupak's claim, "There will be no public funding for abortion in this legislation."

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/mar/23/bart-stupak/stupak-says-there-no-federal-funding-abortion-sena/

I wish everybody that voted for Bush in 2004 would of realized that re-electing the worst president ever was a terrible idea would be the end of our financial future for years to come but they think that electing people that will take what Bush did and double down by taking his policies even further by giving even more tax breaks for the so called job creators which will just go into their bank accounts to use for investments that are only taxed at their preferred rate of 15% and will not create one job.

Good Point!!!

The "Spring" countries/Egypt said they were inspired to uprise and implement the brotherhood by listening to a speech by Mr. Obama in 2009. It is a shame these countries, once our allies, are now hostile and unfriendly, erasing centuries of human/women's rights advancements.

How ironic is it that "freedom" and "democracy" are only important to Conservatives to the extent that nation is unfriendly to the United States? If they're friendly to American interests they can be as oppressive and dictatorial as necessary.

Actually I'm being a little unfair here...that's been a standard of US policy for both parties since the Shah of Iran was installed in a puppet regime, overthrowing a democratically-elected government in 1952. All it's done is to make new enemies for America.

It seems to me the Obama approach is a refreshing change in that regard.

All politicians lie. Republicker's lie all the time about everything. When someone says, I am a Christian and I am a Repbulickan, the first part of the statement is a lie. FrothyBrownStuff is perfect proof of that.

Friendliness to the USA is not a prerequisite for a country to be free, waves. Many nations allied with us in the Middle East are as despotic as those we call enemy. If they're people are sick of it, so be it, and if they now mistrust America because we supported past regimes, well, chickens coming home to roost. How many times does it have to happen before we learn the lesson? Apparently Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan weren't lesson enough?

Toasty...You have to wonder what Santorum is hiding from his past. People who go all religious nutjob are usually guilty as sin. They go around with their religious fanaticism to cover their own black pasts. We've seen this too many times before Jim Bakker? Jim Jones? David Koresh?

Santorum may be Catholic but his words speak far differently than the foundation of Catholicism. In a way, Santorum is John the Baptist to the RNC's JC they'll pull out of their hat come convention time. The RNC knows the religious bigots in red states won't vote for either Santorum or Romney. And the religions of these men are the reasons why. No...they have a convention surprise coming...a real card-carrying WASP GOP tradition, name candidate. Want to bet it'll be Jeb Bush and Rubio on their ticket?

These lunatics want to return to the Bush era policies. President Obama's election interferred with their grand scheme of amassing wealth for the 1% and Big Business. That's why you see this hatred. Their scheme would have had the rest of us in a feudal system constantly working our butts off to insure that the 1% have constant 25% annual wealth increases. If you don't believe it, just take a look at what transpired among some of the biggest financial institutions CEOs in 2007 and 2008. That Financial Meltdown was the biggest scam in US history.

Thats just to each other. Wait till one of them needs to face Obama. Will they attack his record? Well lets see. Stock about 8k when eh took over above 12 now. Will they bash the Stimulus which love it or hate it created jobs and saved the country from total depression and at least let it hit a floor to slowly move up. Will They say hes weak on Defense because he hasnt attacked Iran yet and killed more Americans? While leaving out Bin Laden dead, and more top terrorists then Bush in 8 years. Go after Libya which we didnt lose a single life on and was over in months with a man with as much blood o his hands as anyone? Will they go after his bailout of the auto industry which they think should have went bankrupt?

No they will go on religion. Abortion. Oil forgetting we have produced more and imported less then in 50 years. Go against immigration, hes had more people deported then Bush. Go after his health care plan. Hi Mittens. Taxes? That temp break that will not be allowed to end except for those who need it in the middle class unless they all get it.

Seems like they have a lot to go against while showing there own records which will be torn apart. A guy who rather be pope, things school is for snobs, birth control should be illegal, and lost his own state seat by double digits. Or the other guy who slips more then a gymnast and doesnt care about the little people or the poor. Interesting

You Mr. Obama-mites are sadly mistaken and call for him to get re-elected after all the broken promises you got to be kidding; right!

We don't need a dictator, we need a good president period. The only people he helped out were the ones who donated the most to him and that's my take on it. Did he help the rich, yes. Did he help the unions, yes. Did he stop a depression, I don't know. Did he do anything good for the common working man w/o any union, not that I know of and I know a lot of people.

So once again would you at least explain what did he do for America again? He got bin laden hmm, damn didn't know he was in on the raid. Purnell, Presidential candidates usually choose a VP running mate to fill some weakness in their own background. Example: Obama needed to bolster his foreign policy credentials, so he picked Biden who, for all of his own gaffes, is very knowledgeable on foreign policy.

Santorum would need to choose someone whose long suit is sanity and normalcy.

I'm thinking Bozo the Clown is the natural choice. Worlds ahead of Santorum in both categories. Plus, he has a big red nose.

that has more to do with the wars then Obama specifically, and the atrocious acts being committed by unstable service members as well as other actions that raise tensions. It has nothing to do with Obama personally but with the fact that America has been in Afghanistan and Iraq the past ten years blowing @!$%# up, and the tensions that have been sparked off since then with all the unfortunate events such as the mass murder a few weeks ago or the Pakistan boarder killings.

The same thing would have happened if McCain had been President, might even be worse now if he was; we would be in Iran right now more then likely.

You seem to have a problem with the concept of free speech. It's that the GOVERNMENT cannot infringe, not anyone else! Or private companies. You might also consider looking up the terms "progressive" and "fascist" before trying to use them in a sentence together.

However, I think for the most part, collapsing comments is the way to show disagreement. Newsvine gives us an easy way to AGREE (just click the up arrow) but no easy way to disagree other than collapse. Newsvine needs to add a down arrow.

A blogger threw this thing in a video editor, what he found is very disturbing,

It's not just the Obama / Ahmadinejad flash, the whole add is interspersed with subtle image flashes, many only a frame or two long. Including meat coming out of a meat grinder, a smashing piggy bank, close ups on a blood shot human eye, a distorted face of a woman in glasses, a dark image of a child alone in a forest, the capital building through a red color filter, multiple unflattering shots of Obama's face. Not to mention the more obvious smokey backroom, and baby all in red disturbing red tones. This is not an accident, and it isn't bait, this is a ham handed attempt at some sort of subliminal messaging, some sort of psych op.

Interesting. If true, I hope the stations running the ads realize they can lose their licenses for doing so:

The Federal Communications Commission...will...revoke a company's broadcast license if the use of "subliminal techniques" is proven. The following is from the FCC's Manual for Broadcasters:

We sometimes receive complaints regarding the alleged use of subliminal techniques in radio and TV programming. Subliminal programming is designed to be perceived on a subconscious level only. Regardless of whether it is effective, the use of subliminal perception is inconsistent with a station's obligation to serve the public interest because the broadcast is intended to be deceptive. Boy ain't it the truth; I heard if the liberals didn't have double standards they'd have no standard at all. The agenda is to deflect, attack and blame everyone else.

If Ricky Sanitarium, is going to play dirty he needs to read Mein Kampf

and pay close attention to the Big Lie. Come on now, Iranian puppet leader

and Obama? He must really be talking down to extremely stupid people.

If he only reads the Bible he won't get very far. There's way too much fornication and killing

in the Bible to be helpful in a Presidential election. Not a good guide to winning an election

        or defeating your foes.

Santorum is a Catholic, he doesn't read Bible. Because his Bible is in Latin. Catholics have a Cathechism - layman's digest.

Can't wait for the Pope's boy Sanitarium to be president of the right wing radical cracked teanuts, the gay, rapist, pedophile catholic priests and the braindead evangelical Children of the Corn zombies. Men will no longer have to purchase condoms, as they will no longer be allowed in this country. All mens sperm must be used to create babies. Cameras will be in every bedroom. Catholic priests don't have to worry however, because, according to the testimony of former raped little boys, they don't use them.

I think Sanitarium is in desperate need of a vaginal ultrasound to find out what happed to his brains.

The Pope's first order to his boy will be to release all catholic rapist pediophile priests from prison as the Pope is running out of people to continue the process of shearing his sheep. He is running out of collection pot fillers. After all, he needs the money to fight off all of the lawsuits against the church worldwide.

His second order to RickyDickyDo will be to move the White House to Vatican City.
