Ken, the solution to bad speech isn't no speech. And just because you dislike someone's comment doesn't mean everyone agrees, or even if they do that you all are right. So how about we check our censorship tendencies and let the speech, good, bad, and in between, fly?

One of the real problems here is the existence of gangs. At one time many law enforcement agencies had pretty active anti-gang units and they were actually making some progress. But it almost appears that either related to cost cut backs or Homeland Security issues, the efforts may have been shifted.

Arguably, many of these gangs are domestic terrorists. The difference being only that they are threats to the citizens and not really threats to the government. If we looked at gangs like we looked at the terrorists that Homeland Security focuses on, I think some real progress might be made.

Once any group or organization, formal or informal, can be linked with crimes, seems to me that they deserve special attention by law enforcement. If a crime can be linked to gang activity, additional charges and potentially more severe punishment should apply. Not unlike how other crime related circumstances may incur additional charges and penalties. Even in the case of juveniles, some aspects of this could apply. Maybe if gang related, the charges might be prosecuted as an adult or things like mandatory house arrest vs. just some lame probation. Put a bracelet on them. Violate the terms of that and be bumped up to an adult prosecution. To some extent, parents need to face some charges too. If their kids commit crimes, the parents have some responsibility, just like they would if their dog bit someone. If a kid gets charged as a juvenile, parents get a related charge too. Maybe they can waive the juvenille status for their kid and get the parent charges dropped. Might make for an interesting dynamic.

The thing is that gangs have become an "accepted" part of society. That needs to change, but it might cost us some money to do it. We need to get creative to solve this problem. It is in many cases associated with poverty too and we're not addressing that either. I think that even things like substantial rewards for information leading to gang related criminal prosecution might also help communities control the situation. Who knows, these guys might start turning each other in too. Community watch groups could become about getting funding for community projects instead of citizens playing policeman. In the long run, this could even turn out to be cost effective. Provide info that shuts down a local gang, get rewarded, and policing costs go down, use that money for a park or community center, or organized activites for youth and maybe you reduce the likelihood they end up in a gang.

No doubt there needs to be appropriate punishment for crimes like this, but we'd be better off preventing the crimes in the first place. It is hard to put a worth on preventing a crime that then doesn't happen, but we need to recognize that prevention can be the cheaper route to take and it eliminates victims which in itself has to have some intrinsic value. We spend a lot of money prosecuting criminals and keeping them locked up. It has to be cheaper to prevent the crime in the first place. If we are serious about stopping things like this, we need to be serious about paying for some results. If we approached this as an economic problem, we might find out some interesting things too. But a lot of people don't want to spend any money as long as it's someone else that's the victims.

Sara and Cat, I don't think the point is that this victim wanted to be raped. I sure as heck hope that isn't the case with any person, 14 or not. I think his point was that she was running with a bad crowd, and bad things tend to happen when you run with a bad crowd. Generally, if you want to survive in certain areas, you have to join a gang. The little gangstas are really good at seriously harming non-gang members. To the people who are either blaming the victim or her parents: When I was 14 years old, my parents had little control over me. I am very fortunate that I never got gang-raped due to my lifestyle choices. I began using drugs at a very young age; I have one year clean tomorrow after a 16-year bender. The assumptions and blame here are ridiculous. I remember being 14, and I remember a friend of mine. Her dad was a vice principal, her mom was a cop and I can guarantee you they were some of the strictest parents you could imagine. Guess what? The kid STILL managed to go to parties without their knowledge. At 14 she had seen enough tv and read enough that she mistakenly believed that she "understood" how things worked. The girl used poor judgement getting into the car with the guy to go to a party. But the same thing happens at "white" frat houses as well. Unfortunately, many underage girls find themselves in bad situations like this after making poor choices and being lured by men into parties and basically fed alcohol and drugs till they're too intoxicated to know what's going on. This girl's parents may not have even known where she was was. For all you know she lied to her parents.

I had a couple of teen neighbor girls wind up in a similar party situation after going to a party that ended up being only guys who peer pressured them into drinking. Fortunately no rape occurred but they were grounded when they came home drunk. They complained to me how unfair it was and I explained the type of situation they were in could have ended up a lot worse than being grounded when young men in groups start feeding liquor to underage girls. They really took it to heart and realized what kind of danger they were in.

Every parent of a teen girl should have her read about this story so they don't wind up like this. Its a lot more common than you realize, in both urban and suburban areas. Most of the time it doesn't make headlines and especially in the suburbs the guys don't even end up in prison because their parents can afford an expensive lawyer.

However, a broader, more effective, and surely more permanent source of motivation is that which comes from positive sources. "Do your own thing," and "If it feels good, do it," are examples of this self-centerdness from a previous generation. You cannot maintain a healthy society on a foundation of narcissism. Like I said before, this type of situation is not that uncommon today. Maybe not this extreme but every day girls and women are raped while intoxicated. The funny thing is that everyone jumping on the band wagon to blame society that allows teens and women to dress in a way to encourage sexuality. And I totally agree that sexualizing young girls is wrong.

But no one seems to jump on the societal problem that doesn't severely punish men for violating women no matter what the circumstances are. As soon as a woman experiences a sexual assault, people all over immediately start with blaming the victim or saying she's lying. If she was drinking its even worse. Even the courts won't usually get a conviction on a rape if the woman was intoxicated. So basically were sending the message to young men all over the country that its ok to sexually violate females if they drunk. This is why you have men trying to push girls at parties to drink or do drugs. They know they can get away with it. And many times parents, coaches, schools, military, etc will allow this behavior to continue by sweeping it under the rug or encouraging the "blame the victim" mentality to avoid prosecution or embarrassment.

In my opinion men that violate an underage girl that is drunk should not only be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law but should also be charged with violating someone who is impaired and supplying them with alcohol or drugs. Until we make it very clear to young men that this behavior is unacceptable no matter what the circumstances this will continue.

That's one of the crazy things religion can justify. The "pro-life" people I know tend to argue their way by saying that the fetus has the same right to life as the mother (regardless of how old she is or how she got pregnant), that abortion is murder, and therefore a sin which may lead to the girl losing her place in heaven after death. Depending on the Christian denomination, they may believe that she will go to hell for eternity, or that she will simply not come back to life when Jesus returns - which of course trumps any "earthly" psychological or material benefits that the raped teen may derive from aborting. Some of them would judge the teen in the same way they judge a murder, others would try to sway her out of compassion for her since they don't want her to suffer an eternity in hell.

Since they strongly believe in this, and it would be "arrogant" for anyone to think that God made the wrong call on this one or that their pastor or themselves didn't interpret the Bible correctly, then the only "moral" thing for her to do is to endure the pregnancy. I honestly can't pass judgement on them for this, since I would probably agree with them if I actually believed in a God like that. They mean well, they just happen to have one very crazy belief which cannot be dispelled by any amount of rational debate.

Only a life sentence? Why should we pay to feed them out of our tax money? That's money you could use to feed your family instead... Don't spend all that money on food to keep them alive when a 20 cent bullet is so much cheaper.

Being raised by both parents does not guarantee that a child will turn out good, but it certainly helps. Kids need to be taught that there is an absolute right and wrong. It is not just what any individual decides it is. If that were true, anything could be justified. Religious or not, probably everyone can agree there are certain things that are just plain wrong.

it could be they just do not have the information confirmed and would like more detail first. if you read through every news channel and they offer the same information, most likely there is lack of other details available because the police investigating the case do not have 2gizillion extra funding lying around to hire spokesperson for every case that spark media interest and others are busy working to release information.

It's a real tragedy that this happened to the girls. Just what we need. Draft them into the military, give them military training and make them even more efficient killers, that will go out and kill innocent people in foreign wars for the fun of it, all while dressed in American military uniforms. That's just perfect. Then release them back into American society after 30 years experience at killing and the smell of blood still in their nostrils. What a brilliant suggestion! Not! The last thing they need is to be given anymore skills and weapons training than they get from the streets already.
