Police have told Trista Reynolds the 'significant amount' of blood found in the home where her missing daughter Ayla was last seen is indeed Ayla's.
Updated at 5:455 p.m. ET: With the ground clear of winter's snow, crews on Saturday renewed the search for missing toddler Ayla Reynolds in the woods and fields of Waterville, Maine, but failed to turn up any new clues.
The girl vanished from her father's home in Waterville in December. Ayla was 20 months old at the time.
Police are treating her disappearance as a crime, but no one has been charged.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said the estimated 100 searchers included volunteers, firefighters and game wardens.
Missing toddler's blood found at dad's home
They were being aided by six tracking dogs, he added.
Seven-weeks after an infant went missing while in her father's care, police in Maine have resumed their underwater search for Baby Ayla. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.
Searchers targeted places that were not thoroughly searched over the winter when the ground was covered with snow.
"The weather conditions were ideal, and the snow's gone, so that's why the ground search was resumed today," McCausland said.
McCausland also asked people in greater Kennebec County "to keep an eye on their own property for any signs that could be related to the case, now that the snow has melted."
Ayla was living with her father, Justin DiPietro, when she disappeared. She was reported missing on Dec. 17 when her father said he found her bed empty. DiPietro has said he has no idea what happened to his daughter or who is responsible.
TODAY legal correspondent Savannah Guthrie talks about the developments in the case of missing Maine toddler Ayla Reynolds and why police waited several weeks until revealing discovery of blood.
Police have received 988 tips, McCausland said.
Detectives were continuing to conduct interviews and the crime lab is providing new evidence almost daily, he said.
Trista Reynolds, the mom of missing Maine toddler Ayla, tells TODAY's Matt Lauer she's still suspicious of the baby's father for his sudden interest in the case.
NBC News, msnbc.com staff and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I've always felt that her 'weird' dad did it.
why you spam this ??
does casey anthony baby sit for them...
wow, maureen, all that writing over a simple miss-wording. Somepeole get all riled up over the simplist things.
Check on teenagers in hoodies!
I can see if the baby was possibly kidnapped...but finding her blood ( more then enough) in the house gives a whole different story what possibly happen.
BrutisBear5
Maybe it's because you don't know how to spell!!
they said it was more than a small cut. well, i have had small cuts they hardly bleed, and then a few in just the right spot you bleed like a stuck pig. To include jamming my toe into the corner of something.
That is in defence of looking at it from a "realistic" level. what kind of blood do they think it was, enough she bled out? was there arterial spray? was it on the wall(s) floor, a trail, what?
also as was said several time, there was more than 1 adult (the father) in the home around the time of her vanshing, and someone is not being honest of THOSE people. doesnt mean they are referring to the father in this case.
Someone that was in that house knows the truth and it's time the police started leaning on them. No one just "disappears". The police know a crime was committed..start with arresting them on suspicion and someone will talk.
There is no such crime as "suspicion".
I'm sure the individual who said "arrest them on suspicion" was not suggesting that suspicion was a crime, but for the sake of brevity, made a mis-statement...so glad you, Richard, in Ft. Lauderdale, was there to correct them rather than talk about the case at hand. Gosh, so vigilant. I think that in light of finding blood in the father's home, the police are already working an angle, but are not going to release all their information, lest the case get thrown out of court (if it gets there) for trial in the press and thus, making the case against the assailant, if there is one, useless. Still, gotta feel good about Richard in Ft. Lauderdale, on the case of correct word usage and perhaps, even more than that, correct thought.
I believe that that syds gma watches too much television where someone is arrested for "suspicion of some crime". These shows need better writers. You can't arrest someone for suspicion of a crime. They can be arrested for a "crime". She said, "start with arresting them on suspicion and someone will talk". The police can't do that.
Lawderdale - I agree with you someone in that house, that night, knows what happened. The father, his sister and girlfriend were there. One of them or all of them know. It's time the police leaned on them and arrested them on suspicion of withholding evidence.
Bob, again, the police can't arrest someone for suspicion of a crime. They can arrest some for a crime. They may be able to "lean" on them but there are restrictions on how they can lean on them. People are arrested for committing a crime not for being suspects in a crime. The police need evidence before they arrest someone.
Sorry Richard, you should watch MORE television to expand your education. The police "CAN" arrest someone on "suspicion" of a crime, but they most often won't. Because once they do, they have only a short amount of time (I don't know how much without researching it) to produce the formal charges and the evidence for the arrest before a judge. The reason they won't do this is obvious...once they do, the clock starts ticking. If they don't beat that clock, the suspect walks and the case they could have made is in jeopardy. The bad side to this is that they are doing all the work in the background, while saying nothing to the public, and it appears to everybody that they're getting nowhere. (Then wham...one day out of "the blue", they arrest someone and the public is surprised.)
The only time they will arrest quickly on suspicion is when the suspect it extremely dangerous and they have reasonable certainty that if they don't stop him "now", he would likely go and kill/rape/terrorize again before they can stop him. And most often, they could just keep the suspect under watch using a few officers in case he tries to commit another crime, and catch him in the act, which is what they'll usually do. If there's no other way, though, in extreme cases to protect the public, they certainly have the option. This is not one of those cases.
Just an addendum....the police are usually pretty positive that they have the right suspect. The delay is putting the charges and the evidence together for arraignment and trying to eliminate any possibilities for any surpises that may give the suspect reasonable doubt later on. They normally won't gamble on that time frame if they don't have to.
The police cannot arrest someone solely on suspicion. Unless the crime occurs in their presence or witnesses/victims are willing to provide a statement, the police will need a warrant to arrest someone and a judge will need documentation of probable cause to issue that warrant as required by the 4th amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Due Process one. Habeas Corpus anyone?
that's what I was thinking LAKid you beat me to it.
You would be surprised what the police can arrest/hold you for without a warrant. If they see you commit a crime they can arrest you, no warrant needed. If they suspect your involvement in a crime they can also hold you for up to 72 hours for questioning without charging you with anything. Thanks to the Patriot Act you can be held for as long as they want without being charged with anything, but that usually involves national security issues. The Patriot Act eroded a lot of our personal rights and covereed the use of torture with the American flag. You'd be surprised with want they can get away with today without needing a warrant or having to deal with due process.
First, let's hope there is still a chance they find that kid. Then let's hope the coward or cowards who did this are held responsible.
Pick on somebody your own size, you know?
My money is on the father.
bet my money on a bob tailed nag...do-dah do-dah...
sick of the excuse,, some one took her.. i found her bed empty....someone killed that baby, and that someone was in the house with the rest... and the rest know who that someone is...maybe they all did it.. in some kind of weird ritual. they won't say a word,, and they will stick together.. thay have had plenty of time to get their story straight. baby killers can get away with about anything now.
BrutisBear5
Isn't it time for the censors to give you the boot??
You are wasting space here.
BrutisBear5,
I mean no offense, but are you okay?
It sounds like you are bothered by a particular subject, and rightfully so. But your posts aren't really appropriate for this discussion. Again, I honestly mean no offense, but if these stories which you have referenced are as bothersome to you as it appears, maybe a talk with a counselor might help you to relax a bit.
well no baby can open a door!!! not at her age. i live in portland maine s and mo i see all the news and yes people not just one know what happened and where she is..... for sure!!!!!
Sorry sadmom. We have a 17 month old niece that can open doors. Alarm systems and safety gadgets prevent her getting out of the house, but it's possible (however not likely in this case.)
Tori's right, my kids could open a door in a heartbeat-- as soon as they got to the point of just hanging on to walls. However, I agree, it is a very unlikely scenario. If she had "escaped," she would have been found by now. She wouldn't have gotten too far.
Someone in the house knows what happened. Didn't they find a lot of blood evidence a while back? I guess we'll need to wait and see.
My grandson could unlock and open doors at that age.
heck...my grand son could whoop a bear drink a six pack and run a chainsaw at that age...
My money in on the father. Always has been.
All though she was with her dad at the time, I think mom knows more than what she is saying.
school yard...sing it...bet my money on the bob tailed nag...do-dah do-dah...
That's some funny sh!t bob!
plain bob::: Somebody bet on the bay. That song has been around for years-- I remember that from my childhood.
There were 3 people in the house and no one knows anything???? Give them truth serum and find out who killed that sweet child !!!!!!!
Truth serum only works in Harry Potter books.
Truth serum? Get mid-evil on their ass.
do it legally...water board the lot of 'em...
Neither parent seemed too interested in raising that child. The family was more interested in fighting and pointing fingers than anything else. Mom was a drug addict. Dad was abusive. And so on and so on. If something happened to that child, it was done only to hurt the other parent.
Trista was an alcoholic who was told to go to rehab or lose her children.Trista went to rehab and ayla was staying with her sister. If cps would have left her where she was happy and doing just fine instead of having the cops go get her and give her to the dad i'm betting ayla would be fine and we wouldn't be having this disscussion.
I am a drug addict. I was in active use for 16 years, seven of those years I had my children. I still have my children by a miracle. Tomorrow marks the day a year ago I gave up drugs. I thought I was going to orphan my children that night. I knew they would end up in foster care & had a moment of clarity.
My point is the mother has the disease of addiction. I have the disease of addiction. I love my kids, I care for my kids, I care about my kids, I would do anything for my kids. Now, all three of my children are excelling in school & their behavior shows that they are shown love from me. I didn't even realize this until my entire support system had told me about the remarkable improvement in not only me but my kids. In recovery, anything is possible. If the mother is still clean after rehab, there is a very huge chance she loves for her child the way any loving mother would. Don't be so quick to judge.
Hope they are able to find her, a lot of water and woods in Maine.
Another white kid missing...It's a shame, but is this national newsworthy?
What would be newsworthy sport? You missing?
This IS national newsworthy! The more people that are a aware of a missing child, the more chance of the child being found.
Why you gotta bring race into it?It's a baby that's missing that's all that should matter.Any missing baby is newsworthy.
Must be your first time using the interweb. Also likely your first time reading a news article.
are you kiddin , earsport?? ANY Precious child gone missing is national news, what if you have a neighbor suddenly appears with a child? ever hear of stealing babies to sell? it happens, even here in America, so YES THIS IS NATIONAL NEWSWORTHY,,,,this poor baby needs us, God knows it looks like she dont have any real family!!! GOD BLESS OUR CHILDREN
earsport, maybe the shooting of black child(Trayvon) in Florida holds more interest for you. Sheesh, didn't take long for someone to mention race. And by the way, that was a very insensitive comment.
Any missing child deserves the attention of the media.
Almost all of them are family abductions, and within hours everyone knows who they are with, and often, where they are. You look on the "missing children" board at Wal-Mart, and many of them are assumed to have been taken by a non-custodial parent. Stranger abductions are rarer, and disappearances from homes, rarer still. Missing children photos are also pictured at the post office (or at mine, anyway). And, yes, a lot of them don't make national news.
The point remains that we have two phenomena in the US: missing white child syndrome and missing white woman syndrome. It genuinely is rare for the media to pick it up when children and women who are not white go missing.
This doesn't indicate a problem with the public--it indicates a problem with the media's perception of the public. We don't really know what would happen if the media was more color-blind (or Nancy Grace, for example, who is champion of this syndrome, even if she does latch onto some egregious cases with people of other ethnicities)--it is perfectly likely that we would find that people would be just as likely to get worked up about people of any ethnic background.
Of course, Nancy Grace is a different issue--she lost her job as a prosecutor because she flouted the rules continuously; now she latches onto and ruins high-profile cases for other prosecutors so that it is virtually impossible for them to get a successful conviction. Then, she parades around as if the "powers that be" are to blame that she wasn't the prosecutor on that case because she would have gotten a conviction. It's kind of sad when narcissists (whether they are Grace or Dr. Phil or whomever) who lose their jobs due to incompetence then spend the rest of their lives on TV shows trying to prove they aren't incompetent.
But, I digress. The media's fascination with missing white child and missing white women is a genuine issue--it is no reflection on those in this thread that the media (and this is both left and right-wing) is so warped that it thinks people won't click as frequently on articles about people who are non-white.
another white kid missing??? what does that mean exactly.
hey malibuthemutt. It's a baby!!!Maybe your mom shouldn't have found you.when you went missing. So we wouldn't listen about the your tripe.Idiot!!!!!
Beanathome,
You make a very compelling and valid argument about media coverage of missing women and children. In Florida, a black child in foster care went missing - once the attention of the media for the story was done, you never heard anything else. Yet Natalie Holloway (10 years later) and the other blonde white woman missing in Aruba still make headlines.
Any media attention focused on missing children (Nancy Grace being the exception as you mention) we can only hope will help find the child.
Is this news? Yes. Is this national news? Of that I am not so sure. The whole Occupy Movement spent months in the dark before national news started covering what the protesters were doing and why they were doing it. The news media especially the nation news is designed to shift your focus from the things that really matter. There are thousands of homeless children many of whom are being exploited by adults and even if they did run a story on this topic it would be quickly forgotten covered up by sad little stories like this.
wholey moley american #1, malibu was only responding to ear and trying to make sense of THAT post (#12).
every missing child is newsworthy...every single one
People do just disappear. Ask Elizabeth Smart. Remember Etan Patz? Do I think that is the case here? Hmmmm, maybe not. I lean towards the dad but the reality is that we don't know.
So cute, so fragile, this baby wasn't born in the right place with the right people. They did something horrible to her, and they will take "their" secret with them to the grave.
Except to say there was BLOOD near the father's bed. Oh, from the kidnapper? Think not!
These stories make me nausea. It's time for the police to start smackin people around to get some answers. The community needs to put some pressure on these monsters that were at the house when she "disappeared".
brutisbear5, what does Anna Gristina have to do with this case?
Dear Mr. Brutisbear5, I would be my opinion that the reason your post has been continually deleated has nothing to do with some of the paranoid reasons you have listed, but rather the FACT that in the middle of your post of the article it says "Advertisement". The auto flag searches for specific words in the post and flags based on those. Just a suggestion, but you may want to remove the word from the middle of the article before posting. By the way, I think the article has a valid place in this tread. I found it very informative and will reseach the validity of the information further.
brutisbear::: Boy you are sure hung up on that madam and her business. are you one of the elite who uses her business?
No, his comment is getting deleted because he's copy/pasting from some other source and doesn't bother to cite the reference. What he needs to be doing is providing a link to that article, not the text itself.
Guess he never learned. Bye bye baby bear.
I am glad that lawenforcement is looking for the child,....what ever happened to the little girl that vanished in Kansas City? There has been NO NEWS,.....get on the stick msnbc reporters.
Freddy4life, been wondering about her also. My theory is that the drunken mom killed her (blood found), she called Jersey (not particularily the brightest star in the sky) and asked him to dispose of the body. This would explain too many people seeing a man carrying a baby late in the cold only in a diaper & top, burning clothes in the dumpster, mysterious phone call from MOM'S "stolen" phone to Jersey's house/or ex-girlfriend's house who has many people living there. Some way.....Jersey had that baby.....and I really think mom was in on it also. I think the screen messed up on the window, etc. was done by the mom.
Bottom line is.....if MOM had not been so drunk after hours of drinking....this baby would be alive. BUT, mom gets on TV and has enough NERVE to say her being drunk had nothing to do with it. REALLY???!!
There has been no sign of lisa irwin and it seems that after the initial media rush they have forgotten about her.The same goes for baby kate out of ludington,mi or the little lunsford girl missing out of west virginia.Kate's been missing about 9 months and Aliayah lunsford has been missing 6 months. The media needs to keep their sweet faces in the public eye untill they are found!!
It is a shame that these children all seem to come from broken homes......if you have children they should be your priority, not dating and worrying about your next boyfriend/girlfriend....I do hope there will be happy endings to these stories but we know now that's usually not the case
I agree with your comments about keeping their faces plastered to newspapers, television, internet and their names and stories on the radio. Why do we forget about these children? Why do we forget that their parents are probably the one(s) who did it?
Valerie, you are soooo right! These women seem to be MORE interested in WHO their next live-in boyfriend is than their children. Look around, how many TIMES it's the live-in boyfriend that abuses or kills these kids. These men may want to leech off of these women for sex, housing, etc. but they do NOT want the rest of the pkg. which is the kids!!!
All that I want to add is that women/mothers like this are just too stupid to have children. These kids do not deserve the mess they are brought into. Do these idiot women not know how to prevent pregnacies??????
I agree Valerie. After my divorce, my focus was my minor children, 2 are adults and 1 18yr old and 1 15yr old are still living with me now and that was 9 years ago. NO OTHER PERSON HAS LIVED WITH ME and as strange as it sounds, I have not been "dating" and crap like that. I have kids to raise!
Tori, you must have some pretty light outside doors. Most outside doors I've seen are a bit heavier than inside doors.Sure alot of small children can open an inside door but not the outside door.My 18 month grandaughter can reach a door handle but not pull a door open.An adult inside that house did injury and now it seems killed that child.
Simply put a high up on the door dead-bolt lock!
Here we go again... mother and father are squabbling over (infidelity, drugs, mental problems) the kid is the 'prize' and since neither of them can have her 100% she ends up dead. I say the father leads authorities to the body and he gets life. She's banished from the village for being stupid!
End of story.
It is a shame that these idiots can procreate and a poor child is the victim....too many people are having children that shouldn't
I cannot imagine how and why these men and women could do these things to their children. I have been subjected to abuse as a child, witnessed others who had it far worse than I did and even seen those who were molested, raped and tortured. We need to stop being so light on the crimes against children...any crimes against children.
Governments both state and federal needs to add the murder of a child by parent or guardian to the list of capital offenses, regardless of premeditation. regardless of the fact or not they were committing another crime when it occurred, beating your child(ren) is a crime, hiding the body, tampering with evidence, filing a false report and the list goes on and on in addition to killing your child. This has gone on long enough and too many children have died as a result of those people having children who by no means should ever be parents. The justice brought about by these convictions needs to be swift with no appeal and no excuse accepted.
I have three children and I cannot ever imagine hurting them in this manner. I love my children more than my own life and would sacrifice everything I have or could have for them. Most of us feel this way about our children and families. However, there are those who do not have the parenting gene, the love, the kindness and the understanding to raise children, yet they normally have a house full of them, an addiction or two to go along with it and come from abusive homes themselves, live off our welfare system and these are the ones that we see most times with kids who go missing in the night at least 70% or more of the time.
Something has got to give, something has to change and children need to be taken away without excuse, without exception and without giving them back to these parents who are suspected and proven to be addicts, abusers and molestors. Why is the life of a child so superficial to the world?
Isn't funny how after the casey anthony got away with murder, that all these children have gone mysteriously missing and these dysfunctional parents get on the headline news and think they will get away with it?
Any child that has been abused, murdered or kidnapped, regardless of their race, is an inexcusable travesty!!! I am all for vigilanteism. So sick of this happening to innocent children. And the parents, in most cases, get away with it!!! Free country, yes sometimes, too free.
10 children DIE EVERYDAY right here in the united states from abuse or neglect.80% are under the age of 4.50% are under the age of 1.The united states has the highest child death rates due to maltreatment.Triple that of canada 11 times that of italy.More babies die from abuse than they do from sids.Shaken baby syndrome is an epidemic in this country. Those that aren't killed from it are usually left disabled for the rest of their lives. It sickens me that in this country you can get more time for selling marijauna (a non violent crime) than for murdering an innocent baby. There was a woman who stabbed her baby while in a meth haze she only got probation!!!Where is the justice for the children?
Good post Miranda... part of the problem is we have a social service and juvenile court system that is intent upon maintaining the parent child relationship at all cost. For example parents walk out of their kid lives leaving them with other family or in the foster system then just walk back in and get their kids back. Often times when suspected abuse or neglect is reported its not pursued or the parent is simply ordered to take parenting classes or go to rehab and they still get their kids back. NOTHING should take priority over your kids, not a boyfriend/girlfriend, not drugs, not alcohol, not your need to be immature, absolutely nothing!!!! Either put your kids first or do whats right and let someone else raise them who will. The ideal of its best for the family to keep the family together isnt the case anymore when you have people even into their 40's who cant pull their heads out of their butts to be a parent. When do we as a society truly start putting these kids first?
AMSargent, and Miranda you all are both correct and the state of OK DHS & OK Taxpayers are about to pay for their lax management of foster children, and children of broken homes. I think it was last year a little girl was put back in custody of her father because he was natural parent and mother was deemed unfit to care for the girl. The little girl ended up being admitted to Okla Children's Hospital with serious injuries and died. She had been beaten by the father, in fact a prior visit with her father had resulted in injuries yet DHS caseworkers insisted the girl live with her father instead of her grandparents. There are other numerous cases where mother has been married multiple times and had children with seeming each husband, some of these poor kids end up unwanted by step-fathers and in another case of DHS making mistake they allowed mother to have custody of child, who ended up being abducted by step-father and murdered (he took his own life at least). The extreme right doesn't want women to be allowed to have birth control, or abortions but in many of these cases the mothers should be sterilized so that they can't produce anymore unwanted children.
Ed Orr::: Why is it always sterlize the mother? Why not NEUTER the father? That way the wandering male can't populate the neighborhood (or the countryside) and become the famous dead-beat dad.
I don't agree with you on that one brutisbear5, these kinds of people have been killing their kids for years and years...the SELFISH kind of people. I don't believe it has to do with economical situations because if it did, I'd have killed my kids 15 YEARS AGO! (Not really, just saying)
Something smells very fishy about this but I will just bet the father had everything to do with child's disappearance and I do believe this baby is on the Right Hand of God but now we have to find her and put her to rest.
That Child is going to end up Just like haleigh cummings, anyone remember her?
Too many lost Angels in this world..
