No Mega Millions winner, so jackpot jumps to $356 million for Tuesday

SAN DIEGO -- With no winning ticket in Friday night’s Mega Millions drawing, the lottery jackpot will grow to an estimated $356 million.

The lottery website listed the numbers from the drawing as 6, 17, 19, 20, 21 with the Mega number 20. Anyone who holds a ticket with five numbers and no Mega number will walk away with $250,000.

Because there was no winner of them main jackpot, it will rise to $356 million for the drawing on Tuesday. If someone were to win and take the prize in a lump sum, instead of over 20 years, the cash payoff would by $255.1 million, according to the website.

Unlike the Super Lotto jackpot, which is California-based, the Mega Millions lottery sells tickets in 43 states.

Last year, three winning tickets were purchased in California. The last winner from San Diego was Todd Moitz of San Diego, who won $47 million in January 2009.

"You go in there picking the tickets, you never actually expect them to land," Moitz said after picking up his big check.

When you buy a lottery ticket, you're not spending the money on any realistic chance to win anything. You're spending it on the dreams of virtually plutocratic wealth that doing so allows you.

I'll plunk down a couple of bucks before Tuesday. Dreams can be important.

If I won this much money, first I would go to Disneyland, then Sea World. Donate some to the communities charter schools in my area. Kids there deserve better, being middle class and leaving paycheck to paycheck I see that our society is going to hell in a basket and it sucks that our leadership doesn't give a crap. Our future kids are living in a society where education is no longer important. I will definitely use my money to fix this. Then I would travel the world with my wife because she has supported me for the past 30 years. Give her everything and have her quit her job if she like too. Then give some to my siblings.

While you are having this discussion on whether or not to take a lump sum....IS IT inheritable? I thought I had read a long time ago that it wasn't??? Also, if you are married, both had better go to collect on the ticket...otherwise, it might be considered to be only the property of the person who collected.

Too many things can possibly happen over a 20 yr. period...accidents, deaths. I'd rather take the lump sum & invest knowing I would have my will in place to those I designated would inherit. I would also put those amounts into a trust so that they wouldn't be taxed...the trust would....but they would get yearly proceeds. And I'm too old to take the payments...I want mine up front!

    It is inheritable.

The games based on winning a thousand bucks a week for life are not, with an exception they allow the first $200,000 to be inherited should you die from the shock.

I consider the few dollars I spend on MM to be a donation to the state. It is money I can afford to lose.

If I win, I would take the lump-sum. I currently live in WA so no income tax, but shortly thereafter I would move to Oregon (no sales tax there so my money would buy more). I lived in Oregon 20+ years and wish I was back there.

Of course, first step is to buy a winning ticket (and hope you don't have to share with anyone else). Make sure you don't make any 'promises' to anyone about the winnings (you've heard the stories).

Second step is (before you announce that you won) retain a trusted attorney & accountant to help you decide how to protect the money. Make sure the money will last much longer than you expect to live (I've got an uncle that is 96 & mother is 89, so I better plan to live to 100).

Third, do some good with the money (you can splurge a little, but be realistic). Consider donating to a college or university (or technical school), something that helps people improve themselves.

            Fourth, enjoy the ride!

You have to be a real jerkoff idiot to complain about taxes in case you win the lottery.

The most money I've EVER won playing any lottery is $1,000.00

Just won $400 on the Pick 3 here in Misery...I mean Missouri and I played my regular $10 work of birthday numbers of my mom, me, my kids and my grand kids. GOOD WIN! Won on my OWN birthday numbers..LOL!

Guess I can spare $4.00 for this.

I think I would take the lump sum. I and 33 and in good health also. But you can never predict tomorrow. Tomorrow is never certian for even the healthiest. So If I die I want to be able to leave the rest to my family. If i take it in payments, when I die the rest does not go to my family. Unless this changed I would really like to know.

Maybe it is different where you live but unless it is a $1,000 a week for life type lottery all fixed amount lotteries can be inherited by whomever you choose.

I don't think they let you remain anonymous. With that amount of money leave the country for awhile then go where no one knows you if you choose.

Usually people forget about lottery winners after a short time.

Even if they let you stay anonymouse, word spreads like wildfire and sooner rather than later you would have cousins removed a hundred times coming at you for a "loan"...lol

But you go ahead and waste that dollar.

Who cares? Lottery is a tax on the poor. Of all the folks standing in line for a ticket 98% should be saving that money to pay a bill or buy food instead of being on the public doles.

                        98% ?

Where did you come up with that number?

I know quite a few folks that buy lottery tickets, not a one of them spend money that should go for necessities. Not a one of them is on any public assistance.

Reminds me of the guy that pointed out that almost all lottery sales are in lower income areas.

I pointed out to him that stores, mini-marts, and taverns usually aren't zoned for upper income neighborhoods.

Most people buy their groceries, their gas, and do their drinking in lower income neighborhoods.

                        It is called zoning.

It's ridiculous !!! No one needs 300 mil. Split the pot up more. Maybe a booby prize for tickets with no numbers. BTW: The jack pot can be bought. Well organized, with sufficient capital, all possibilities can be purchased. A group of Australians pulled this off a few years ago. The risk? Getting to many other winners who split the pot with you (you take a small loss) and getting all tickets purchased within the time required. Any billionaire could do it.

Such a big jackpot is so tempting because of how much it could radically change your life! I live in Australia but was able to participate by playing online at www.thelotter.com.

For two bucks you have a ultra mega slim chance to become a 1%er. Hell if you took it in one lump sum you could hire Carl Rove and run to be a President and win.

We are talking BIG money here. I would take a large chunk to spend on family and friends now and establish a trust with the rest. The trust would pay my heirs an amount that would allow them a middle class lifestyle for the rest of their lives. This would allow them to pursue careers and interests that they truly love without the need to earn a living. If set up correctly this could be money that lasts for generations. Think Kennedy's.

Let's see 175,000,000 to 1. Buy a thousand tickets 175,000 to 1. Mathematically, your odds improve. Does that mean you should risk a $1,000 on a 175,000 to 1 shot? I think not!
