'Tremendous damage' as twisters tear through areas near Dallas

The strong winds lifted tractor trailers, hurling them through the air. After the wave of storms subsided, damage spanned several counties near Dallas. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.

Updated at 12:31 a.m. ET: Up to a dozen tornadoes touched down in areas south of Dallas on Tuesday, tossing tractor-trailers hundreds of feet into the air and causing widespread damage, especially in Lancaster and Arlington. At least 17 people were injured but there were no reported deaths.

As the storm system moved northeast, it spawned another tornado in Forney, a suburb just east of Dallas, where the fire station and several homes were hit and the high school saw roof damage, NBC News reported.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was hit by large hail and more than 225 outbound flights were canceled, NBCDFW.com reported. Travelers were taken to shelters as the storms passed. American Airlines canceled all its remaining flights Tuesday to inspect for hail damage.

One tornado hit the Flying J Truck Plaza in Dallas, tossing two trucks, said driver Michael Glennon, who caught the destruction on his video camera.

"The second trailer is ripped to pieces and thrown 50 to 100 feet into the air," Reuters quoted him as saying.

Ten to 12 tornadoes touched down during a massive storm that brought chaos from high winds, rain and hail to the nation's fourth most populous metropolitan area, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jesse Moore.

Seven people were injured in the suburb of Arlington, police said. Most suffered only minor injuries but one person hit by a falling tree was in critical condition, said Arlington police spokeswoman Cheryl Carpenter.

In one of the hardest hit areas south of Dallas, Lancaster, tornadoes damaged 300 structures.

Of the 10 people injured in Lancaster, two of them were severely hurt, said Lancaster police spokesman Paul Beck.

At the height of the storms, NBCDFW.com and other TV stations showed live video of "debris balls" in Dallas, Ellis, Johnson and Tarrant counties.

Severe weather specialist Dr. Greg Forbes explains why the slow-moving tornadoes dwelled over the Dallas region.

A huge funnel cloud was seen flinging large truck trailers high in the air as flashes of exploding power lines lit the sky. "There's lots of 18-wheelers," said one NBC 5 reporter near Arlington. "I've never seen this before."

The orange tractor-trailers were from the operations yard for Schneider National trucking company. The yard saw "massive" damage, the Wisconsin-based company said in a statement.

Arlington's mayor declared a state of emergency, and many homes there were destroyed or damaged, NBC 5's Mola Lenghi reported.

Three people suffered minor injuries in Arlington, officials said. Two were taken to a hospital from a wind-clipped nursing home, they said.

At least two tornadoes hit suburban communities in the Dallas area.

In Lancaster, at least 10 people were injured, two severely, officials said. About 300 structures were damaged, Mayor Marcus Knight told a news conference Tuesday evening, the Dallas Morning News reported. A curfew was put in place from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday, he said. A shelter was opened at the city recreation center, but Knight advised residents to seek shelter outside the city if possible.

NBC 5 reporter Ken Kalthoff said, "there's tremendous damage here." More than 100 children and adults inside a daycare center appeared safe, but the building was heavily damaged, Kalthoff said.

"People have stumbled out of their houses surprised they survived," reported Kalthoff, who saw the funnel cloud from about a mile away.

Lancaster High School and a large water tank barely avoided damage, he added.

Live video from NBCDFW.com showed a Lancaster subdivision along Pepperidge Drive East in which dozens of houses had been damaged or destroyed. Emergency crews were staging in a parking lot at Cedar Valley College to the east of the subdivision.

Lancaster resident Devlin Norwood was at home when he heard the storm sirens. He was making a quick trip to a nearby store when he saw the funnel-shaped tornado come down and kick up debris, The Associated Press reported.

"I didn't see any damage until I got back home. We had trees destroyed, fences down, boards down, boards penetrating the roof and the house, shingles damaged," said Norwood.

NBC

Damaged trucks and trailers are seen after a tornado pased through south Dallas on Tuesday.

Schools south of Dallas were locked down, NBC's Charles Hadlock reported, adding that one of the funnel clouds touched down in the town of Red Oak.

At least 40,000 customers lost power in the storms, which also dumped hail the size of golf balls across the area.

In Dallas County, the storm pushed cars into fences and toppled trees. A motor home was torn apart and crumpled in a driveway where a home's roof was torn off.

Mobile homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged in Kennedale and one person was hospitalized, the fire department said.

The massive Parks at Arlington mall along Interstate 20 shut down and management ordered shoppers and others into the basement, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Employees at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington were moved into the tunnels, the newspaper said.

At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, American Airlines was having to inspect 68 planes for hail damage. Several airlines canceled Dallas-bound flights for the rest of Tuesday.

A member of New Zealand's Parliament, Jacinda Ardern, was among those at the airport when the tornado siren went off, the New Zealand Herald reported.

"It was really loud; it was a real roar,” said Arden, who was attending a leadership conference. “I was away from the windows but there were hailstones the size of golf balls coming down

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Compassion. lol. Compassion means jack sh-t to the dead because they had their head smashed through their a$$.

An hand on the shoulder or a slap on the back will make someone feel a lot better as they look at where their house used to be.

"hope everyone is safe" ... what do you expect someone to say, Floyd? "hope everyone dies"?

My comment is directed at Floyd, not the OP. I'd expect the OP to say something like that. Floyd acts surprised that someone would. What a goof!

Hey I had my day. Wednesday April 27, 2011 at 2:52 P.M. C.D.T. in Cullman, Alabama with an F4. The local and national weather service gave us ample warning up to 12 hours before the storms hit. When it comes to natural disasters you can hope and pray in one hand and you can crap in the other hand and see which one fills up first.

I lived in Dallas for a number of years. Our house was hit by a tornado while living there and often found myself huddled in a closet, or bath to avoid another. I moved. My nerves just could not take it. I feel for all those including family members that saw or felt any devastation. I have been that person on a highway unable to get off as the wall cloud approached with nothing but tractor trailers all around me hoping to get out of harm's way. Awful.

Some of the best people I've ever met are Texans, especially those in and around Dallas. Until last December My Son, Daughter-in-law, and my 2 little Texas born Grandsons lived in Rockwall since 2004. Many friends and acquaintances there. My Son and His family, many, many more. I fervently hope for the safetly and well being of all the folks in and around the Dallas area.

God has nothing to do with it. It's mother nature just being her old grump/bitchy self. She is beautiful to look at but she'll take all you have in a split second. And you know Tripod, most of these people wouldn't want you to actually get hurt, but when alot of us who live near these places and have family and friends living there, It's a pretty upsettting thing to see people making light of the situation and trying to be the funny man. Anger and fear.

Tripod - I have to call BS on you. No one who loses a son in a twister goes on Newsvine to joke about twisters unless they are a sick individual.

So please, we know you didn't go through a twister.

As for the people around Dallas, our prayers are with you. Hopefully no one died in these twisters.

They looked pretty strong. Of course the info is just trickling in.

And to the commenter who wonders if Texas will get any of the money back that we sent to Washington - I'm sure they are wasting that money as fast as they can in DC. Probably won't have any left to send back here for our disasters. Most people have no idea that Texas sends the second most money to Washington that doesn't get sent back. We get back $.94 for every dollar we send. The majority of other states get back more than they send. So we pay for other states disasters, but then can't get back some of our own money to help with ours?

ryan,

or they choose to use humor to deal with the pain of their loss. Not everyone goes out and drowns in a glass, bottle's it up, or whatever else people do to overcome great losses; some use a morbid sense humor to deal. There are as many coping mechanisms as their are forms of life in the sea.

I, along with others, cannot imagine that anyone who has lost so much would joke about other people potentially experiencing the same loss unless that person has some serious issues. Besides, God doesn't drop houses on people or take their sons in tornadoes. He GAVE up his own son. And if you want to point fingers about why bad things happen, it wasn't God's fault-he made things perfect, it was us who screwed it up and caused bad things to come into the world. Blaming God for the fall of man is like blaming the owner of a jewelry shop for a robbery because he had diamonds on display. I don't think a jury in the world would buy it. God is the one who took the punishment for the robbery instead of just leaving our rear ends in jail. He gave Jesus to the world to die so we wouldn't have to suffer the consequences of the the things we do, and Jesus himself chose to come and to die a horrible death for it. So do you really think a God like that is going to deliberately take someone's son in a tornado? It's a natural consequence of the fall of man. These things will end one day.

It was I who posted the comment about dropping a house on you. Its terrible that you lost a son and your home. For someone who has, I think you could have chosen to not exercise humor at a time when someone else could have been experiencing the same thing. I am not a Christian fanatic, and often find myself against the things that most 'mandate' are from god, but even I know, that you treat others better than they treat you.

....because natural disasters only happen in Texas? They happen everywhere and, having lived in thru the 253 mph tornado in Joplin I can only say that politics has nothing to do with it. However, you do find out pretty quickly that God is about the only protection you have. For the next hour, I definitely lost any interest in politics, humor or anything else until I knew that my family was safe. Only idiots make jokes in time of crisis.

I don't know Tripod, but I do know about the April 27 tornadoes in Alabama since I live here (in Alabama) and Cullman was hit. My little town of around 660 people was also hit and I lost friends I went to school with. My house was actually hit in a tornado in Oct 2010 and we are still trying to get stuff fixed. I hope everyone in Texas is alright but Geowill is right not everyone deals with pain and loss the same.

Seen to much: Nature has a lot more power then people give credit actually a lot more power then some imaginary being. As I said I hope everyone is ok but no imaginary being is going to help those injured recover or replace what was lost only time and their fellow man can help heal those wounds.

The problem is that when you are going through adolescence your abilities to use reason and logic are largely undeveloped. When someone in your stage of development tries to join adult conversations it compromises the very notion of intelligent communication and often leads to these socially awkward situations. That's not your fault; it's strictly attributable to your age. When you grow up things will change... or they won't and you'll become what we call a liberal.

@Ouch! My Balls itch – That a nice name

Obviously that one flew over your head. Let me explain it to your mental midget brain.

The moniker comes from the pain I feel when Liberals run the country. It is a constant kick in the nutz from the IDIOCRACY who voted for and are currently running this great country of ours into the ground.

                10tacle

A lot of black people and Hispanics live the greater DFW area too. So Dogma, maybe you didn't cover all your bases in asking God who He was angry with.

                Kinda racist, don't you think?

You democrat liberals are such a riot. Literally with the OWS crowd.

Oh it's far worse than even a conservative robot like yourself knows, 10tacle. I'm an INDEPENDENT! I was a republican until Bush Jr. and I've never been a democrat. Your problem is that we Independents DO NOT like your hero mittsy and most of us will not vote for him. You raging conservatives need to learn to play well with the dem's if you ever want to get the time of day again.

                Thanks for playing though. ;->

Sure if your Jesus consists of two air masses of differing temperatures converging. Science easily explains it all. The fact that 10 people favorited that silly post says enough about what is wrong with America today. But go ahead and pray for the people of Dallas/FW if you think it will do them any good and it makes you fell better. It won't change a thing. I have friends in Richardon just hope this misses them.

Look at that truck up in the air! Amazing the power of nature. Pity the person inside. Man is nothing against such weather forces.

Well, those of us who are Christians should be thinking about what we can do to help our fellow man. If you really want to help, a donation to the Red Cross would be a very positive act. Even if you aren't a Christian, a donation is a good idea.

I think you erroneously believe yourselves intellectuals worthy of degrading the beliefs of other people due to your lack of beliefs but you come off sounding like a bunch of bigoted fools. Or maybe you're just a$$holes, either way if someone wants to express their faith and acknowledge their reliance on their faith then what the hell does that have to do with you and why do you feel compelled to insult them for it? You're sad... not smart, just sad.

Instead of sitting on your ass waiting for Jesus to fix everything, why not get off your ass and volunteer your time and money to make the world a better place? Do you remember what Jesus said about doing nothing while we await his return? When he does come, he will chew a new hole in your backside for failing to do anything to make the world a better place.

look people are hoping for a rapture, and a rapture cannot happen without the comming of the anti-christ. While people wait for the anti-christ, there is a tornado killing people in Dallas, and what is the response people give? I hope it is the rapture. I am no religious fanatic, but people dying should always be a sad thing.

The anchor kept referring to sparks from transformers, but much was hidden by the huge "breaking news" banner at the bottom. Please remove all that garbage so that we can actually see what's going on!!

Of course, they don't give a crap about Fort Worth. To them, if it didn't happen in Dallas, then it didn't happen. I live on the west side of FW in White Settlement. They keep saying it's bad here but it has been ok. A lot of rain, but not much else.

No, MrEd7451, it is worse because one is scientific and the other is merely fantasy. (That said, it is really not something to laugh at anyway. People are being hurt, and there is nothing humorous, politically or otherwise, in that.)

So, one or two people of a very large group of people say they believe a certain thing and you extrapolate that to everyone from that group. Hmm... I think that's called prejudice. I won't give you a big long less on on theology, but the Book of Revelations was not considered canonical until 392. Before then it was considered apocryphal. Most reputable theologians consider Revelations a warning to humanity about what could happen if we embrace materialism.

the only thing for sure about Global Warming is the fact that the planet goes through warming and cooling cycles, always has, always will. The rest is just theory, heavily disputed (by lots of scientists) theory at that.

It's heavily disputed alright, but mostly by folks like the Koch Bros who are in the business of causing it. They have proven that if you spend enough you can get just about anyone to say just about anything.

So let's look at the money behind the Democrat party huh? George Soros, a man who's self stated purpose is to bring down the economic structure of the United States. He spends billions annually toward that exact cause. And he does it through Progressive Liberal causes. The man is actively trying to bring about economic collapse in the United States and the Democrats love this guy, go figure.

These right wing tin hatters have been blowing smoke about Soros for years. For the record, Obama has meet the man one time, in passing. It's not like he gets his advice from him. As for the Republicans, they have completely sold their souls to the Koch brothers, ALEC, and Grover and their campaign to eliminate the American middle class so that they can pocket some more change. This guy whining about American economic collapse should pick up a newspaper. It's already collapsed and it was accomplished by a bunch of Republican numbskulls who thought that you could give back all the tax money, fight a couple of wars, hand over free money to pharmaceutical companies and nothing bad would come of it. And then deny deny deny. It's not working. We know who did it.

MrEd A scientific theory is a set of principals that explain and predict phenomena. Once a hypothesis is verified, it becomes a theory. So yes it's just a theory, but a theory is really a set of facts to science. Queue that "The more you know" thing over my head please.

Yes, I'm good. I think the storms dropping tornadoes in Dallas is what was moving over us. This rumble continued for a long period and clearly was not thunder. It is a chilling sound when you can hear it but can't see it. You know it is there, just has not dropped the tail. I did not see any hail but it storms and then goes deathly still and quiet.

Dear Retired SFC, your post reminded me of a joke by Jackie "the joke man" Martling.

A man is about to start a round of golf when he sees a priest about to do the same. He asks the priest to join him and the priest accepts.

At the first tee, the man swings at the ball and slices it way off to the left. (slices go left, hooks go right, I think). The man loses his cool. "^^$#&*%#^#&^$*, i missed!"

The priest says, "Whoa, hold it right there, young man, but you can't be swearing like that. Its wrong and after all I'm a man of the cloth." The embarassed man apologizes and promises not to do it again.

At the second hole, the man swings at the ball and hooks it way off to the right. He loses his cool again. "^^$#&%#^&^$*, I missed, again!"

Again the priest says, "Whoa, stop that swearing or I'm going to report you to the golf club. Your behavior is reprehensible." Again the man apologizes and promises not to do it again ("cross my heart, hope to die".

At the third hole the man swings and tops the ball; it goes nowhere. His cool is lost again. "^^$#&%#^&^$*, I missed again. Soon storm clouds come over the man and priest. A bolt of lightning comes out of the cloud striking the priest.

From the clouds a deep voice is heard, "^^$#&#^&^$*, I missed!"

                                    Reminds me of another joke...

A river is flooding over its banks so emergency workers in an ambulance are trying to evacuate people. They come to a house and the man that lives there tells them, "No thanks, God will save me."

The water continues to rise so more emrgency works approach the man in a boat and try to get him to leave and he says, "No thanks, God will save me."

The water has gotten so high that the man is standing on his roof and is knee deep in water when emergency works approach him in a helicopter to evacuate him and the man says, "No thanks, God will save me."

When the man dies in the flood and goes to heaven, he says to God, "Where were you? I waited and waited."

God says to the man, "I sent an ambulance, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want?"

@Random pennsylvanian Uh no, we've not had all christian presidents. Madison, Jefferson were deists (if you are smart enough to know what that means), Lincoln had no religious affiliation with any church and stated "The Bible is not my book." We've probably had a number more too that only pander to the religious to get votes. Now Stalin was a seminary student before he became a deranged despot. No, we Christians aren't delusional. We have faith. Most of us aren't "get in your face" about our religion, but we do have faith that God exists. I don't usually paint everyone that is not a Christian with a broad stroke like jetjoky just did, but hey, who knows, maybe instead of having no faith, people who think we are delusional are all just cynical.

There is nothing that says science and faith can't both exist. Personally, I believe they do. There is too much proof of evolution to not believe it, but that doesn't weaken my faith in God. The universe began somewhere. I choose to believe that it was God that created it and I will continue to do so until science can offer definitive proof, not theory.

There are probably a lot more Christians like me in the world than there are the "in your face" types. We just aren't as vocal. But when you insult them, you insult all of us when you say things like No, all christians are not nuts. They're just delusional.

I guess jetjoky doesn't believe in anything and if he does, he's delusional.

Sapp11, Really science is what mankind does when it tries to answer the age old question: How does God do it?

Read over God's comments regarding those that were building the Tower of Babel.

And there's something from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe" that when presented with an argument about the non-existence of God, God's reply was "Huh! I never thought of that" , then vanishes in a puff of logic.

MrRighteous - I am the wrong person to try to convince. I am not a bible thumper or scriptural scholar. As a matter of fact, I am of the opinion that The Bible was written by men for men not the direct word of God. I think it was written by men in an attempt to get society to behave in a way the men who wrote it wanted them to behave. I never argue when an atheist says its a fairy tale. It very well could be. It was written by man after all.

None of that shakes my faith though. As I said, it is all faith. Either you have faith and believe or you don't.

My dad was a minister. He raised me to believe that God put us on Earth and we do what we do and answer for it when our life is over. He taught me that God doesn't sit around pulling people's number or stop bad things from happening to some people and not help others. God created our universe and we are free to do as we please while we are here. I choose to live in a way that I won't have to be embarrassed when its over and God says to me, "So, tell me about your life." For me, its that simple.

DeSoto and Lancaster are tornado alley in North Texas. Don't know why, but there have been multiple tornados through that area for years.

The ones whose god it is that is apparently shooting tornados at Texas and they are considering this a good thing.

Personally, I would think it's a bad thing, but we dont get tornados here, so maybe I'm missing something.

I live in West Fort Worth. So far there have been injuries in Kennedale and in a nursing home in Dallas. There are warning systems here. Sirens went off in South Dallas and in many parts of Fort Worth around 12:45 to 1. There are still lines going through Arlington and Dallas still possibly producing tornadoes.

Hurricane season is on the horizon and I'm guess that there will be about 15 named storms with 3-5 of them cat3 or higher. Hope everyone stays safe this year and be on alert.

@Kyliesmom You have no concept of unconditional love for your fellow human if you are a religious person. Religion commands you to love which is ridiculous as if love can be commanded. But the real lesson taught by religion is to persecute and hate those who won't believe like you do or live their lives according to your rules. I was a religious person for many years. Luckily education and science cured me of all that nasty hate and prejudice so that I have real love for my fellow human, including the religious people who are always wanting to send me to their nonexistent hell. The atheist bashers here prove my point. Frankly, we aren't the ones who are intolerant of other's views but we will call BS when we hear it.

Yes Louisiana, you seem to be the epitome of all that is tolerance. It's true that the most tolerant among us visit the comment sections of articles where people of faith might be expressing said faith then proceed to ridicule those people; completely rational. People of faith are inundated with hatred and prone to persecuting their faithless neighbors; that's not a generalizing/bigoted statement at all. Clearly, you're the calm voice of reason in the chaos of Christian hatred exhibited all over this thread. Yes, I'm sure that in visiting this thread your goal was simply to spew your "tolerance" all over the place.

NYMike, understand that your comment was with the best of intentions. But for the record FEMA has not denyed anyone aid in a very long time. Not since Katrina has there been a poor response from FEMA. The only delays have been when the Governors wrongly hesitiated to take Federal assistance based on ideological nonsense. Let's see what Rick Perry does. He just turned down the aid for womens health care. I to hope everyone is well. I have some very good friends in that area as well. I lived there for 5 years.

FEMA has denied several claims within the past couple of years.

There are plenty more out there. Bottom line is, a predetermined set of circumstances need to be met. That is regardless if the counties or states can even dig out of said disasters. If they get denied and the states have poorly managed their finances, it's the residents that get screwed.

At work, no time to google and just on break so I can check this. I did call my family, 3 tornados have touched down around Mesquite they say but not close enough to damage. Thank you all again for your help.

Actually, Demented1, Mesquite borders Dallas directly. It's a suburb of Dallas. I know this because I grew up there, and graduated from Mesquite H.S. I hope the tornado doesn't hit my alma mater!
