Police spot stolen truck being buried in giant sandpit in New York state

In an undated photo provided Wednesday, by the Orleans County Sheriffs Dept. a truck is partially buried in a sand pit at Country Construction in Murray, N.Y

Thieves snatched a truck from a business in an Upstate New York town -- and the evidence almost disappeared into the sands of time.

But a week after it was taken, the vehicle was discovered by eagle-eye investigators flying around Wayne County, according to local media.

“Jeffery Paul was in the process of burying the box truck,” Investigator Corey Black told the Batavia News, referring to the son of David Paul, who owns Country Construction, where the truck was spotted.“He was bulldozing it under in a sand pit.”

With a search warrant in hand, police found other suspected stolen property in the 77-acre site. “We recovered the box truck, two stolen backhoes, one old one that had been dismantled, and a stolen car,” Black said. Only the box truck was buried in the sand pit.

Investigators described the Pauls as cooperative. They face possession of stolen property charges, according to Black.

They describe Paul as cooperative....what else are you gonna do? It's like being caught red-handed standing over a dead body w/a smoking gun isn't it.

What does George Zimmerman have to do with this case? Absolutely nothing. Unless you have something to contribute about the article, move along.

Why steal it just to bury it?

There is a certain thrill in the stealing (and getting away with it.) Perhaps the truck was loaded with cargo that was more valuable and easier to fence than the truck.

Now the county gets a free bulldozer - they should be able to confiscate the machine that was being used to hide the evidence. If there are any drugs involved, the DEA might be able to confiscate the entire 77-acre site.

They steal the thing, bury it until the fuss dies down, then exhume it later and sell it or part it out.

I dunno if you know anything about sand but it doesn't do well inside of cars.

Give them the same punishment and spare the cost of a trial.

It makes me wonder what else they might find in this location and/or others. I doubt that the few items they found were all that have been stolen.

Can't just go digging... 4th amendment .... Can't search without a warrant that specifically states what they are searching for....

But I agree that there is more buried out there.

Just have to crack open the Cold Case file....

Reminds me of the good ol' days - thousands worth of railroad lumber was stolen over several nights - locals fingered a man & his 2 sons. My boss (sheriff) & I flew over their farm & spotted piles stacked in the woods. To verify loss, I had to contact the RR supervisor in another county, requiring one of their deputies to accompany. Arriving at his house, my radio activated his garage door opener, revealing $30K in "misappropriated" property amassed over a 35-yr. career. Results? 4 arrests, loss of RR job & retirement. Moral? You can hide, but you can't always run....

Please write a book. That's the best story I've heard since the one told by some old-timer in a cafe in Butte, Montana about the local thief who, after their burglary, called his partner's cell phone, which had since been confiscated by a police officer, to ask, "Did I leave any of my tools in that house?" I never laughed so hard at breakfast before or since.

If they checked now I think it would be the strong smell of Dunkin Donuts, after they got through with the pile.

Buzz L.: one of the early VHF's, I think - probably not one of the old low-bands - back in the early 80's, as recall.

Amused: Actually, I 've thought about it, but no one would believe most of the (true) stories, like the one about the 2 teenagers caught with an expensive gallon baggie of weed - turned out to be alfalfa, so we let 'em go (eventually..!).
