The husband of Shaima Alawadi, Kassim Alhimidi, holds a picture of his slain wife at her father's house in Samawa, 160 miles south of Baghdad on April 1. Alawadi, an Iraqi-American woman who was beaten to death in her U.S. home is a possible hate crime victim, although new court documents raise questions about family members.
Court records released Thursday show that an Iraqi immigrant who was killed last month in her California home had a rocky relationship with her teenage daughter and apparently was planning to divorce her husband, NBC San Diego reported.
No arrests have been made in the killing of Shaima Alawadi, 32, who died from blunt force injuries to the head.
NBC San Diego said the records include the description from a neighbor of a possible suspect running from the area of the house on March 21 about 45 minutes before her daughter Fatima called 911. Fatima told reporters and police that she discovered her mother unconscious in a pool of blood in their El Cajon home. Alawadi died in the hospital three days later.
A "dark skinned male" in his "late teens or early 20s" was seen running from the area, NBC San Diego reported, citing an police affidavit for a search warrant filed in Superior Court in San Diego.
The affidavit indicated 17-year-old Fatima was upset about the family's plan to have her marry one of her cousins, NBC San Diego said.
It noted that on Jan. 31, Alawadi called the police to report Fatima missing. The daughter was located 20 minutes later and the call was canceled, according to the affidavit.
The document says police records show officers answered a call reporting two people were possibly having sex in a parked car — a couple identified as Fatima and Rawnaq Yacub, 21. After Alawadi arrived to pick up her daughter, the teen reportedly jumped out of her mother’s car when it was moving about 35 miles per hour and was injured. In the hospital, she told paramedics she was being forced to marry her cousin against her will.
A search of Fatima's cellphone showed that while the teen was being interviewed by detectives, she received a cryptic text from someone that read: "The detective will find out tell them cnt talk'," NBC San Diego reported, citing the affidavit.
A note left near Alawadi on the day of her death called her a "terrorist" and sparked the theory that her killing was a hate crime based on religious or ethnic bias. Police have cautioned against rushing to that conclusion, noting that it was just one possibility that was being explored.

The news site UT San Diego, which obtained the police records first, said a sheriff’s lab examination of the note showed that it was a photocopy of the message, not an original.
UT San Diego also reported that a search of the family’s cars turned up court paperwork — not yet completed — used to file for divorce. Another form requesting a waiver of fees had been filled out by hand with Alawadi's name, adress and phone number.
Alawadi's husband, Kassim Alhimidi, and Fatima are reportedly in Iraq, where they traveled for Alawadi’s burial.
The records initially were released inadvertently to UT San Diego by the the Superior Court in El Cajon, a press officer at the court said. Other press organizations were then given access to the information.

I said from the beginning , it was not a hate crime. This is honor killing, like thousands of murderers under Sharia Law. Send them back to their country along with all the Muslim, who don't assimilate to our culture and our laws, this is America , not a Middle East country. Thanks to all the interventions of our government in Meddle East we have more and more refugees coming with their families living in closed communities in Chicago, North Carolina, California , If they want to come to America, they have to live as Americans.
Like I said before, even the KKK doesn't leave a note if they wanted to remain anonymous. So much for how lucky the daughter was, and to be conviently sleeping upstairs with no signs of forced entry. Everyone knew what was going on. My assumption is now is still the same as it was before. Probably done by the husband or one of his friends as an honor killing.
You guys should all be outraged that they these muslims would have wanted to blame this on Christians. Afterall, that's what the note said on the front door, right?
oskar, it may be an honor killing but do we call it honor killing when a christian man kills his wife or a mormon man kills his wife. Can't you just blame this on the spouse killing the other spouse or the daughter killing the mother? If anything, I would bet you anything that it was the daughter who killed her mother.

Because it is different, valhallaarwen. It is part of Muslim culture to honor kill a woman who cheats. Or refuses to marry who her family says. Or refuses sex with her husband. Or talks to a man not in her family. Or in some cases, just goes outside without permission. The man who kills her is honored, praised, and not punished.
A Christian or Mormon man who killed his wife for any reason but provable self-defense would be arrested, tried and punished. He would also be shunned by his culture.
This smells of honor killing. There have been several like this in Arizona. Mideast people are nuts and will kill their loved ones because they do not obey or become too americanized. This really is lookin like that is what happened. And now the old man and daughter are in Iraq never to be found.

I sadly do agree with some posts, however...if you want to immigrate to the US you do have to at least somewhat assimilate into our melting pot culture. My ancestors did, and were proud to do so. Don't come here if you don't want to be one of us. Christians who force their children to marry who they choose (like some are starting to do) should also be killed. People who bring their culture to the US aren't the problem. The problem is people who bring their culture that's illegal or abusive. My guess it's the daughter's boyfriend (not her intended future husband) who killed the mother. The father is probably killing his daughter in Iraq, and when the deed is done, he'll return for his other children... probably taking them back to the middle east so they aren't 'subjected' to western culture.
The Christian Taliban is well on its way to becoming a real threat to this country. The waves of change are already becoming evident... soon we won't have to complain about the middle east, it will all be right here at home in the name of "God". It will happen in such a way that most American's won't even realize it until it's too late... but it's already started.
I guess we've completely overlooked the fact that her husband is muslim, and most likely follows sharia law, which would mean he brought his culture into America and it was forged to look like Americans were responsible. Let's not forget this nation was founded on christian principals, by a majority of christians. 118 out 206 of the founding fathers were either Episcopal, Anglican,or Presbyterian. If any religion has a "right" to america it would be christianity. Also, you can't cite one biblical verse that supports forcing anything on anyone. That's mainly a dishonest way of denying concious.

i live in san diego and have been very suspicious of the story being offered by the family. since i have dealt with many individuals from the iraqi community i have experienced first hand the way some treat their wives, mothers and children. defiance and disobedience by the women in the family simply is not tolerated by the men----- women are dealt with harshly. honor killings are not considered a sin and they believe it is a mans right. i wish this poor woman could have experienced the freedom she sought. wonder if she agreed with the arranged marriage for her daughter to marry a cousin. somehow i think she wanted a better life for her daughter. she came so close to getting away.

The eldest son Muhammad, 16, is also in Iraq now. One, two, or all three were in on this. I tend to think one or two but the daughter and husband both look awfully suspicious for it from the info thus far released.

thomas... I consider myself to be a liberal, and that's not the way I see things at all. There's no place for honor killings or the beating or degradation of women for any religion in this country. However, it happens in all religions. Evangelical women are not treated as equals (their twisted notion of 'equal' isn't the 'normal' notion of equal)... and the Evangelicals are breeding like rabbits to take over the US. I have more fear of them than the Muslims in this country. Most muslims don't participate in this type of non-sense. However, when you have a first generation family from a strict middle eastern country there's an increased risk of their behaviors being carried on here. I think, though, that the daughter had a boyfriend that committed this crime. I also believe that the father has already killed her in Iraq for being disobedient and 'dishonoring' the family.

My friend - Coptic-Christian - Your little quote there isn't just a "mistranslation" of the Qur'an, it's completely false and flaming hatred; especially your little part about the translation of your own quote being wrong and adding your own little sprinkles of hatred as to what the original Arabic "actually" says. Islam teaches men to honor and protect women. Many crimes, and even wars for that matter, have been justified by the name of religion. Just because someone commits a crime, and happens to be Muslim, doesn't mean that crime is justified by his religion. That's like saying the Christian man who killed 91 kids in Norway at that summer camp last July committed all those murders because something in his religion told him to.

The Surah you were referring to in the Qur'an is Surah An-Nisa, verse #34. Does this verse tell men to beat their wives? (Read this part slowly and carefully) - No it does not. Since most people on this board can't read Arabic, here are the three words in the verse (in transliteration, of course) that are used to support the claim that Islam allows the mistreatment of women:

Fa'izu (to use persuasive speech or admonishment)
Hajara - Wahjaru (do not touch or molest them; ie not to sleep in the same bed with them)
Daraba (tap lightly as 'percuss' (look up the word if you don't know what it means), This does not mean beat

This is just like bible study. You can read anything you want to from a verse of the bible, it you chop it up into small enough pieces. It's not complicated, when you actually read what it says.
And if you religion is truly Christian, as your name post name suggests, I would venture to say that cutting down another religion as below your own, because you don't understand it or simply choose not to be tolerantant, probably isn't very 'Christ-like.' Just a humble opinion.

Just like the Martin shooting in FL, the media was quick to frame the story in a way not supported by facts. The "news" industry in this country disgusts me.
This story hasnt been framed. I have only seen three articles, the first about her death with her daughters statement about finding her and the note, the second about her funeral in iraq and this.
The following post typified the treatment that anyone received who dared to question the party line (the media narration) that this was obviously a "hate crime" against Muslims by xenophobic, hate-mongering, racist, bigoted Americans who yearn to victimize 'the other' at every opportunity.
And we were all scathingly castigated for being disgustingly "insensitive" to the grieving family. Nevermind that one or more of them killed the poor mother/wife his/her/themselves. Don't let the FACTS get in the way of the great media narration about racist, bigoted America. The real killer(s) knew all that, of course, and took full advantage in an effort to steer police astray. Fortunately, U.S. cops aren't stupid and no one was falling for it except for maybe some of the America-hating dupes on the Vine here who will believe anything and everything negative they hear or read about this country.
It's not a fact yet that someone in the family killed the mom. Let's not swing too far the other way. Let's let the police finish the investigation.
Adam, that was an excellent answer and I agree completely. The only exception being when you said that the cops are not stupid. I have much evidence to the contrary. However, excellent post that needed to be said to these people who paint us as racist, bigoted Americans, and have no idea who we actually are.
The facts in the Martin case do not need to be framed. An armed man tracks down and starts a confrontation with an unarmed man, then shoots him and claims self defense. No one disputes any of that, and it should be tried in a court of law because Zimmerman is a racist murderer. Clear cut.

Actually, the media framed both with the facts they were given at the time. They knew there was a note. Sounded phony to a whole lot of people--like the "Acid is Groovy" at the MacDonald murder. I think they conveyed that. This is the first time they had reason to say something different. They said it.

Gone are the days of investigated journalism. The presses start rolling before the body is cold with whatever information they have been told along with all the assumptions they can manufacture.
Actually, that is the way investigative journalism works. You put the information out that the police give you, with some qualifiers (which they did)...and you start looking for more facts. Which they did.

If I remember rightly, quite a few people were suspicious of the family and not so quick to judge it a hate crime. Kudos to them for looking beyond the information at the time.

Yes Bill, it's found in abundance in the many stories that have been written about this case. It is enough to completely satisfy me that it is a family affair. Christians and jews got bashed freely in our Culture for about the last 50 years. How many movies protay relious people as cranks, hypocrites, dweebs, repressed etc. They had a better go on TV shows but Puritan Porn was not enough to balance out a growing popular distain for religion. If you think Jewish people aren't bashed you're wrong. Not too long ago there was a story about some crazy Baptists from Kansas picketing military funerals with signs that said "God Hates Jews". Their contention is that God is allowing American Servicemen/women to die because we allow Jews in this country and our government is allies with Israel. Oh, and they also march around with signs that say "God Hates Fags". My point is that it seems no matter what group you are a part of, be it a race, religion, social class, sexual orientation, etc, some other group will hate you for it. Actually, the neighbors described such a person. The daughter never said she saw anyone. Her tears we so transparent. I'm fairly sure the police suspected her from day one. They eat macdonalds and love to listen to our music. Secondly, women even if covered in hijabs (which only 40% of all muslim women do) and veils, will wear mini skirts or should i sau, western fashionable clothings of their choice. i have known and worked with many muslims and as compared to you, i dont hate them, i accept them the way they are. they have always been nice to me and my co workers and i have been nice to them. you hate the fact that they dont follow what u believe in and now blaming them for "NOT assimilating". you are one hate monger and i bet the religion you follow is what made u the way u are !! do some soul searching before start hating people only because they dont follow your religion. Their religion made it to about Christianity's 15th century and stopped, period. There are some moderates like all religion's, but do not ever doubt the contempt they hold all of the other religions in. As far as western clothing goes, yes many of the younger generation of males get to wear western clothing. I can flat out guarantee you that you will not find a muslim female wearing a mini skirt in Riyadh. Whether it's under a hijab, or not. I can't even believe you would make such an asinine statement. The only place you will find a muslim female wearing anything like a miniskirt is in western countries, period. That 40% number must have come from your ass, because it does not even come close to being accurate.

IN the vast majority of muslim countries christians are not allowed to have a church, and I am not even going to start about the conditions jews have to live under. IN our country we punish people for killing muslims. In their countries more often than not the death of christians is state sponsored. In our country we separate the church from the state. In their countries the church is the state. In our country we allow homosexuals to live in peace. In their countries, every last one of them, they put them to death. When we go to their countries to live we respect the laws and customs, often on pain of death. When they come to our country, they expect us to respect their customs, and they hold our laws in contempt. It's not hate Dan. It's not racism Dan. It's a fact, and if you have actually lived in a muslim country for any amount of time and bothered to leave the compound where westerners are usually safe, you would know this.
Your post is riddled with inaccuracies. Try at least watching Rick Steves travel episodes where he goes to Iraq or Iran or another middle east country and learn a little bit more about the cultures. All cultures have their nutjob extremists, and those are the ones who make the news. They consider women covering themselves as a show of respect for the women, while in this country, one can see women mostly naked in public, and we also have a lot of objectification and victimization of women and girls. You state that we "let homosexuals live in peace." While it is certainly the goal for all men and women to live in peace regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. we are not there yet and have a long way to go.
Broad sweeping statements involving whole religions or cultures are usually not factual. They have their progressives and conservative factions too, as we do in this country. How many children have been killed reading that book by Michael Pearl? One death of a girl in Washington state involved such cruelty, it was hard to imagine. There are many other cases across the nation of child deaths by parents who were following Pearl's instruction and thinking they were being good Christians. Just as we cannot judge all Christians by the Washington couple's cruelty, so we cannot judge all Muslims by the honor killings. We know that these are people who are such zealots, laws don't matter and vulnerable people end up getting hurt.
Sounds like another case of mistaken racial hatred to me. Why are we so quick to attribute cases like this as racial violence? It's almost as if people are looking to make everything about race.
