Using anecdotal phrases like " half mah town carries guns, we don't shoot nobody..." makes you appear quite ignorant of how potential risk and human psyches work. I'm sure most of the gun fans in AZ thought the same thing right before that fellow "gun owner" shot 12 people, killing several including a 9 r old. No matter WHAT YOU FANTASIZE about your rights and abilities to own and use fire-arms, the FACTS are , for every ONE time a gun owner fires a gun successfully in self defense, TWENTY NINE other times guns fired in accidents, suicides, murders, robberies, and killing sprees. So all you cowboys have a 1 in 30 chance of getting " THE BAD GUY" and a 29 in 30 chance that YOUR kid, or ex-wife, or neighbor, or some random innocent will DIE by YOUR GUN, thru suicide, accident, or crimes committed after your gun is stolen. That's the problem with GUNS, is that they still fire and KILL even when held by curious 5 yr olds, depressed teens, desperate ex-husbands, enraged employees, and any criminal or recently insane @!$%# that wants to shoot the rest of us. But hey, long as you get 1 bad guy for every 29 of our children and loved ones that die, then I guess you're entitled to your COWBOY FANTASY LIFE, right?

funny i dont see any stats on Black Gang bangers and how many innocent bystanders are killed while the rival drug dealer was missed. but they definitely killed that pregnant girl and her baby going into the store he was hanging outside of selling. all the while someone gives stats like the ones we see here. go hang out in uptown in chicago or hang in harvey il. and see if you still say no guns.

No, banning all guns would not seem to a productive move, however, pause for thought.

Most guns used in crimes have been stolen from people's homes, not purchased legally. Many gun deaths from guns legally purchased "to protect the family" result in the same family members being killed, not the bad guys. Most legally purchased guns used outside of the home result in the gun wielder ending up in jail.

So banning all guns, perhaps does make sense in order to actually protect your family. Now if the British ever threaten to invade again, then maybe a gun in the home would make sense (no it wouldn't because we have a standing military). There really are no good arguments for owning a gun, at least not on your person or in your home.

My Dad had guns in the house when we were too small to access them. They were sport (clay pigeon) hunting rifles. When we were big enough to figure out how to access the locked cabinet, they were removed from the home to the sportsman's club under look and key and security. When my Dad wanted to use it was available. I've often thought that a reasonable compromise to gun ownership is to keep them in an armory possibly attached to a police station. When you wish to check out your weapon for hunting, cleaning, making love to..., you show your registered and certified (trained) gun user ID, etc. noting destination of the weapon(s) and time of return. No big deal and also adds a little safety addition for hunters in case they do not return from their excursion in a timely manner.

I believe this is reasonable. As we know for fact that guns in the home do not protect people and in fact add to the problem of guns being used in crimes, it makes sense to store them safely (not in your night table, under your bed, or in your closet - faux security). You can own them, use them freely for their intended purpose while simultaneously helping keep them off the street and out of the home.

Now expected rebuttals - my rights..., ain't no trust no cops..., you don't know squat my home was invaded ten times and I killdem all,...and other myopiates that convince people that guns equals safety.

If people weren t getting crazier every year guns would be harmless

Just like bridges are harmless until some deranged person decides to jump

      Maybe we should get rid of knifes,baseball bats,2 by 4 s,tire irons,boiling water,etc,etc,etc,

      Give me a break....

People kill people, a gun is only one of many tools used in the act of killing.

As I am reading I am amazed on how many people want to ban guns. 8775 people were murdered by guns in the United States in 2010

An estimated 20,000 people were killed by drunk drivers in 2010. On average 17,520 people are killed annually by drunk drivers in the United States, at a rate of about 2 per hour.

Drunk driving obviously takes more lives. Should cars and alcohol be banned as well?

Irresponsibility of getting behind a wheel drunk is far different than aiming a gun WITH a purpose.

            randalla3-

That "irresponsibility" should carry the same exact weight as a murder charge.... It is WITH purpose. You may or may not like it but that person chose to drive while drunk and aimed it down the road with other people in their crosshairs.....

So my question is this how did people ever committ murder before there were guns? Bows? Swords? Rocks? The NRA does suport training programs and responsible gun ownership. When are we gonna stop blamming these senseless acts of violence on fire arms video games or even television and place the blame where it really should go and that is immoral life decisions and poor parenting. The moral compass in this contry is so out of whack that we now have debates about whether we should ban guns, where in all theory if people just raised their kids right everyone should be able to walk around with a gun and nobody would ever get shot. The second amendment to our constitution was put in place to protect us from our own government and thats exactly the way it needs to stay.

So, if EVERYONE raised their kids right we could all walk around with weapons and no one would get shot? That's not going to happen. What's your next suggestion?

And even if every parent was perfect, what about the idiots, bi-polar people, etc. Going to blame that on immoral life decisions?

Sheesh. Always tons of verbiage, but little substance.

Hey Gary do u actually think before you speak. So you say America and Isreal decide who lives and dies but you forget about all the godless places on this Earth where there are no moral bearings. Why dont u go to Somalia and try selling crazy there.

Someone is always harping, when it comes to gun control, that existing laws need to be enforced. Where is it that existing laws are not enforced?

Getting the guns out of the hands of idiots and mad dogs should have some priority, I would think.

It's a tired argument used that guns don't kill people. In fact, they do. One can argue all they want about the constitutionality of gun ownership, and I for one would never suggest we try and take our guns away, they are here and for that they will stay, BUT, to argue that society would be just as crime ridden without them is denying the facts. Societies without guns have WAY LESS GUN VIOLENCE. Just look at our sister across the pond, but hey, they are an island and can control what gets in and out better than we can, and the notion that the "good" citizens don't have guns and the "bad" citizens do, is a frightening thought. What I find comical is this notion that our founding fathers had no limits on what kind of guns we could have. I don't think our founding fathers would have condoned some of our weaponry had it been in existence. The problem with the strict constitutionalist's mentality is that they don't accept that it is a growing document, ever changing with ever changing times. They are called amendments, and thankfully we have them.

We know that there are responsible people who own guns and irresponsible people who own guns. Of course, it's hard to determine who is responsible enough and who isn't to own a gun. I'm sorry to all the responsible people that own them, but I think it a better idea if no one owns a gun. It seems too easy for a gun to end up in the wrong hands.

As far as I know Obama hasn't taken away your guns. Maybe you just hate him because he's black.
