Task force hunts killer after shooting spree in Tulsa, Okla.

NBC's John Yang reports.

Updated 6:41 p.m. ET: A city-federal task force has been set up to find the attacker or attackers who shot three people dead and wounded two in a string of early-morning attacks in north Tulsa, police in Oklahoma said Saturday.

Three men and one woman were shot within a mile of each other in north Tulsa at around 1 a.m. on Friday morning, police said. The body of a fifth victim, a man, was discovered outside a nearby funeral home in the predominantly black part of the city after 8 a.m. on Friday. Police said he was likely shot at about the same time as the others.

All the victims were black, prompting the Rev. Warren Blakney Sr., NAACP Tulsa president, to say that someone appeared to be "targeting black people to shoot.”

"I’m on edge for my people," Blakney said, according to the Tulsa World.

At a Saturday afternoon press conference, Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said it was too early to know whether the shootings were racially motivated.

"The whole race issue, the hate crime issue, there's a very logical theory that would say that's what it could be, but I'm a police officer, I've got to go by the evidence," Jordan said, adding that no racial slurs had been used by the gunman, Reuters reported.

Jordan had a message for the shooter: "We're coming after you."

Officer Jason Willingham said police were searching for a white man driving a white pickup, which was spotted in the area of three of the shootings. At least two dozen officers are investigating the case, along with the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, Willingham said.

"We don't have one definitive way where this investigation is headed," Willingham said. "Right now, that's the only thing we have to go on."

The local chapter of the NAACP and other black leaders held an emergency meeting Friday evening at a church to appeal for calm and discuss safety.

When asked if people in the community felt that the shooter was targeting black people, Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson replied, "Yes, absolutely," krmg.com reported.

Henderson said people should not let "some crazy, deranged person mess up their weekend," but he added that the community "needs to watch their backs" until the shooter is caught, according to the Tulsa World.

"We have to handle this because there are a number of African-American males who are not going to allow this to happen in their neighborhood," said Blakney, according to The Associated Press. "We're trying to quell the feeling of `let's get someone' and we will make as certain as we can that this isn't pushed under the rug."

Police don't believe the victims knew each other.

"There is no forensic evidence to link at this point," said homicide detective Sgt. Dave Walker. "Timing and location lead us to believe they may be connected."

The FBI is assisting in the investigation as part of a joint city-federal task force, dubbed "Operation Random Shooter," and will determine if any federal laws were broken, said Special Agent Clay Simmonds, FBI spokesman for the state of Oklahoma.

Police identified those killed as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31. Fields was found wounded about 1 a.m. Friday, Clarke was found in a street about an hour later, and Allen was discovered in the yard of a funeral home about 8:30 a.m.

Minutes after Fields was found, police found two men with gunshot wounds in another yard two blocks away. They were taken to hospitals in critical condition but expected to survive, police said.

Police Capt. Steve Odom said in his 30 years with the police department, he’d never seen so many shootings happen in such a short time.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

How about some concern for the blacks targeting blacks? This shooter may be any color, but there needs to be an outcry for all deaths.

Calm yourself, theres typically a motive for all killings, this is an investigators job to identify and pursue. What are you 12? Do you not clearly see the difference of gang related shootings and this?

What do black people think they can do? Gather in masses of thousands, demand that white people bow down to them, and say publicly "We do not live by the rules of the white man" -- wear t-shirts calling white people "CRACKERS" -- Obama putting his 2 cents where it doesn't belong -- and white people just sit down and take it?

It's been a double standard too long. The worst part is, I'm not even racist (and never came off as being racist until this Sharpton/Jackson stuff recently). This all stems from a Hispanic guy that shot a black kid, and the black community saying "KILL WHITEY" over it.

Dave, first I would like to point out I hate the phrase "race" community, always feels like we have secret meetings on how to devise a way to make another "community" cringe. On that note, you must know a very vast majority of educated African Americans as myself do not think sharptons or jacksons speak for any of us. I live in a community in Arizona. My community is very multiracial, but the fact is some crazies exist in all people. When crimes like these happen, we should not be trying to finger point and sling thou laundry is dirty too, so double standard. We arent children, lets be adult about this and just hope this guy is caught and soon. Education is key to solving ignorance.

Brando I completely understand your problem. I have many AA friends who live a typical American life. And they constantly are being lumped into the innercity or thug community. If they speak out they feel totally isolated. By the white community, because they are not sure what they will bring to the neighborhood and the black community for speaking out. Its lose ...lose for them. Jesse Jackson was practically crucified for speaking out.

Well.......someone should go down to the local street corner and track down these shooters and have a talk with them and find out what's going on in their life and why they feel they have gotten to this point in their life.

Thats what Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson says we should do......find a kid on the street corner and talk to him.

I hope that they catch the SOB that is doing this very quickly. People should not have to live in fear of being shot walking down the street in their neighborhood. My condolences to the families and friends of those who have been killed and I hope those that were injured make a speedy and complete recovery.

I think that some commenters here are reading things into the statement made by Rev. Blakney. I do not see anything in his statement where he makes any assumption about the race of the shooter. I do not think that there is anything racist about his comment that someone is targeting black people. He is simply stating an opinion that is pretty well supported by the facts since all of the victims have been black. Maybe he could have chosen his words more carefully instead of saying "my people," as this does to some people connote an us and them attitude, but I do not think that was his intent at all. I think he was just trying to say that as the local NAACP president he identifies with the victims.

It is election season and Obama deperately needs his base fired up. Racist blacks, Liberal whites, without these he has no chance. So in the following weeks and months you will hear stories by msnbc abc nbc pbs cnn that induce racial fears. What you will not see is everyday stories like the slaughter of black youths in Democrat strongholds like Chicago, 16 dead over St. Pattys weekend, Detroit, NY, LA, or the one in Gary In. on 4/6/2012. 2 black youths pull up to 2 black youths walking and order them to the ground so they can steal their shoes, one does not do as told so the black youth shot him in the head. No out cry no race baiters like Lawerence O'Donnell or Jesse or the Retarded REV. Sharpton. just a dead black youth. So sad. Micheal 412302 it is because we have jobs!

This article does leave out some information. Although they don't have a lot of forensic evidence, witnesses describe the shooter as a white male.
Although the NAACP is involved, there is no "outcry," no rallies. The NAACP is working with residents to help them learn how to be vigilant and remain safe. In local news, they actually quote the Tulsa NAACP president, Rev. Blakney saying, "There’s no need to become a vigilante.”

I'm from Tulsa. There were some hate crimes recently in tulsa against white women where a black man beat and robbed them and a similar feature was him calling them "White Bitches" Could possibly be backlash against a hate crime committed by a black man on whites. But also, lets not be too quick to blame this as a hate crime either as we don't know the race or motive of the shooter(s)

I remember many years ago there was a famous serial killer who targeted only brunette women. Naturally at the time all the brunettes in this particular community were pretty frightened. How silly would it have been though if certain prominent brunette community leaders had gotten together and said "I’m on edge for my people"? Personally I’ve never thought of people with the same hair color, eye color, skin color, etc, as being "my people". My people are any people who are intelligent, rational, articulate, tolerant, fun loving human beings. Why would I feel some special bond or comradely with someone just because he shared certain physical attributes with me, regardless of his character? After all, that would be almost absurdly irrational. Also the fact of the matter is, all murderers are in bad shape psychologically speaking and it doesn’t really matter what flavor of crazy they are, so to speak. In other words it doesn’t matter if they are targeting whites, or blacks, or short people, or people who were born in a leap year. They are still just killers that must be stopped. And the fact of the matter is people in this community, no matter what their race, are still much more likely to die from any number of other causes than at the hands of a serial killer or any other type of murderer.

My Cousin Chris is Filipino, I am white. He calls me "Cracker", I call him "Mojado!" I personally think the racial name calling is a grade school mentality. In this story here I can guarantee the shooter and the victims are all the same race, because there is ONLY ONE RACE THE HUMAN RACE.

I know I will most likely get crap for this, but I have to wonder how much good the Civil Rights Act of '64 has done. After 50 years it seems as if instead of changing peoples minds about equality, it has simply hidden the hate deeper and out of public conversation. It is clear it is still there.

In my view all, and I mean all, people are different. There are good in all races, as there are bad, and trying to legislate equality seems to be proven more and more every day a futile experiment.

Let's hope that these shootings are not Zimmerman's legacy.

There are many people in this country sitting around with guns and rifles who will not admit it...but they would be glad to kill Blacks. Many of the skewed and crazy comments, such as blaming Obama for these killings proves that this is a very sick country. Who ever the shooter is, he should be quickly caught and arrested, unlike Zimmerman. Such actions would be honest law enforcement.

What about the two DC snipers? They were both black targeting others? As I recall, I remember EVERYBODY fearing for their lives regardless of gender, race, etc.

NBC purposely edited the tape to make it seem that Zimmerman was an outright racists. Equally all the news media purposely put up pictures of a 12 yr old vs a nearly grown up 17. Equally they put a mug shot of Zimmerman up instead of what he currently looks like. We have been fed a lot of twisted facts and it has caused a lot of hard feelings to surface.

A country can legislate laws, but they can't make people feel a certain way about others. If blacks have a good history with whites and other races they will have one attitude. If they feel they have gotten treated poorly they will feel otherwise. The same about whites and their one-on-one relationships. So do I think many hard feelings lie beneath the surface. Yes, I do. We have become a society that is intolerant of the intolerant. So if we don't like what one person is saying, we pass a low forbidding behavior and talk to reflect a better society. The problem is the hatred is still there. You can't legislate it away. Only honest dialogue can do that. The black community needs to have an honest dialogue with itself. Why is there so much black on black crime? What are so many black mothers alone raising their babies without a male? Why are so many blacks lacking even a high school education? Why isn't education a 1st priority? Why aren't there more black small businesses?
If you think my questions are unfair, I would ask the same about all races. The stats don't lie. Use the stats, instead of denying them, to figure out what is wrong and how to help. BTW, Hispanics lead minorities with respect to starting small businesses. I can see that just in my town.

Of course African Americans in Tulsa are fearful of racially motivated hate crimes. Tulsa has a sordid past when it comes to race and crime. The infamous Tulsa race riots occurred in early summer 1921. One of the wealthiest black communities in the United States was burned to the ground. The perpetrators were roving mobs of white males, armed and filled with hate. The city of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma were slow to react and the riots became a multiple day holocaust of death and destruction. Like all holocausts, the survivors and kin of survivors do not forget hence the fear that is now in place in Tulsa. There is mad man on the loose in Tulsa and a race riot may be exactly what he is shooting for. Racial hate is an ugly meme and it has replicated itself from 1921 to 2012 with no end in sight.

@Brandoj

Do you not clearly see the difference of gang related shootings and this?

At this time, it can't be ruled out that this is a gang-related shooting-- and that's not to say that the victims were involved in a gang. The ages of the victims identified seem to indicate that that is not likely. But that doesn't mean that the shooter isn't gang affiliated or motivated by gang mentality. Remember that there is a very heated rivalry between Latino and black gangs, and there are a number of racist white gangs as well (think: Aryan Brotherhood skinheads). And then of course, it may not be race-related at all and the shooter may very well be a black gang banger shooting people at random to earn points with his crew-- this happened in LA in the early and mid 90's where a gang (and I apologize, I can't remember which one) would drive around at night with their headlights off. The first car that flashed them, the common road courtesy to let you know your lights are off, was shot to pieces. This obviously isn't a direct parallel to that, but just goes to show that random, senseless killings are an embedded part of the gang culture. In any case, I hope they find the person (or persons) involved quickly and efficiently and rather swiftly introduce them to the American Justice system-- or better yet, a police officer's .40 caliber bullet.

It is not uncommon for a man of the "cloth" to refer to people in his community as "my people."

Who is race baiting here? This particular article coming from MSNBC never mentions that the shooter is white. It merely questions whether blacks are being targeted - which on the face of it, it would seem so.

It seems to me that it is the commentators on both sides of the issue that are doing all the race baiting.

john-737278 (post 1.44) muses that we shouldn't try to legislate equality. I know a lot here agree with him, but john, you need to read the country's founding documents, then request that the government revoke your citizenship.

I am actually surprised it took this long to get crap. I have read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution many, many times.

And if you re-read what I wrote, which I believe was thought provoking and eloquent, you might notice that I never wrote that we should not try to legislate equality, only brought into the discussion that it simply doesn't seem to be working.

And by the way, who are you to judge me about whether I deserve to be a citizen? It is open minds that make changes for the better. And if you see something that is not working, it is a citizens obligation to bring it to peoples attention. Otherwise nothing will change.

"Officer Jason Willingham said Saturday that police were searching for a white man driving a white pickup, which was spotted in the area of three of the shootings."

Looks like this may very well be a racially motivated hate crime.

I noticed that. The problem that I have is that even if it was a hate crime, It would be small group and not a representation of the larger white population. Even though it would most likely be perceived that way.

Or, it could be reverse profiling. Now that would be an interesting twist, if the people they are searching for had nothing to do with it.

I think at this point no one knows, but sure are willing to draw conclusions.

This is a serial killer plain and simple. His target is black people. Looking at the times they found the bodies or the reports that came in I would say this person is full of hate on that specific night and day. The officials stated in the article "Officer Jason Willingham said Saturday that police were searching for a white man driving a white pickup, which was spotted in the area of three of the shootings" Which to me sounds as if the people in the community are grasping at straws to point a finger. I would hope that they have some bullets for ballistics evidence or some other way to get a lead other than speculation. If you are black and live in this community I would be cautious but don't blind yourself to all the possibilities because the evidence so far isn't available.

the color the skin of those shot or of the shooter shouldnt matter 1 bit unless the shooter himself claims he did it bc he is racist if they do catch him. this rev. is a wack job to go to that right away. the area is mostly black people; so there is a higher % for them to be targeted sadly.

people really need to drop this race crap that everyone still plays out today. its old and its in the past. there is a black president; he didnt win just from black votes but from every race. yes, there will always be racist ON ALL SIDES; but by always bringing race up just splits our country and spreads the belief of hate. it spoils the mind of the young and then they grow up being racist themselves.

sometimes things do happen for other reasons then the color of your skin... like just bad luck. i mean no disrespect to anyone but its just tiresome that we still have to deal with such BS in america. wish the country would just unite again like it did on 9/11.

      siz me,

Well the GOP?Teaparty crowd has been stirring up Race problems for the last 3 plus years and you all wonder why people jump to conclusions of white on black violence, Heads in the Sand Much?

Where is your proof on you claim, I noticed you didn't post a link to any such storey. Here is the truth and I don't have to post the link because there has been a few storeys by MSNBC, the Martin case and this case. It is clear that MSNBC, the black leaders, the racist NAACP, and the left. In both cases there has not been any proof of racism, but MSNBC and all others want to mack anything into racism and that is very clear; in fact in the Martin case there is only one witness and he said that Martin was attacking Zimmerman. Plus Zimmerman is not white at all, but all those on the left don't seem to care about that they want to make it into race. Just like this case there are only a few witnesses, but they all say the were no racial slurs made; so what makes the left jump to these conclusions and disregard facts. It is clear that they are doing this because it helps Obama in his re-election bid. So your claim that it is the right that is doing this is false. MSNBC is a sickening news organization that only gives propaganda fill storeys, with a rush to judgement every time before the facts are even in. Even the president made a statement and a rush to judgement, just like he did when the cops arrested the black professor that was Obama's friend and Obama said the cops were stupid. There is a good leader right one that gets only part of a story and that draws his own conclusions; kidda like he is with regards to the constitution and his over stepping as well going around congress. He does not support our constitution therefor he does not support America. Before you jump to conclusion I am an Independent, I see the writing on the wall with Obama though. You Libs say that Bush spent to much in 8 years and he spent $4.5 that was real bad as far as I am concerned, but than you have Obama spending $5.2 trillion in just three years. All of you have to know that we can't spend like this. America is going to be no longer America if we re-elect Obama. Once he is a lame duck president he will just try and put all of his radical idea's in place and America will have another great depression for real, no power no fuel, no water people will freak out when that happens. If you think it can't happen again you are nevi, as history will repeat itself. Though the bum(obama) out office before he destroys America. Also MSNBC should be brought up on charges anyone that has been a part of the two storeys for in sighting racial violence, as should Spike Lee for tweeting what he thought was Zimmerman's address. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/29/tagblogsfindlawcom2012-injured-idUS349636126520120329

At this point anyone would be better suited for the White House than Obama. Any of the would at least follow the constitution.

Regarding your post 1.21........it has always been "us versus them" in this country and most likely always will be. What good does it do to stick one's head in the sand about it? Considering the fact that all the victims are black, I find nothing inappropriate about the reverend's choice of words. Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes. I saw an elderly white woman on a local newscast recently replying to a question about the state of race relations in the Sanford, FL area. Her response was that, in her opinion, there isn't an issue. She has a right to her opinion and so does Rev. Blakney. Black people ARE his people. What's the problem?

      Tek,

Why are people denying that this could potentially be an act of white supremacy??

Well because there are just no facts to support that claim, most intelligent people wait until all of the facts are in before they make an opinion regarding such issues. I know you just like the president and MSNBC would like to make everything about White Supremacy, even when no facts support it. Just like in the Zimmerman case they say it is a white on black crime, when in fact Zimmerman is mexican.

Just like this morning we see that there is a storey that say both of the men are white when in fact on is clearly of asian desent. Leave it to MSNBC to make it a white on black crime again.

What about the black on white crimes why don't we get to charge them with hate crimes, I think these double standards are BS. If they can have all black schools we should be able to have all white schools without being called a racist because the all black schools are not called racist schools another double standard.

      @ grumpy:

According to the NRA "an armed society will help prevent crime." When is that suppose to kick in? I am waiting.

      * Based on survey data from the U.S. Department of Justice, roughly 5,340,000 violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2008. These include simple/aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders.[13] [14] [15] Of these, about 436,000 or 8% were committed by offenders visibly armed with a gun.[16]

      * Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology,[17] U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.[18]

      * A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun "for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."[19]

      * A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.[20]

      * A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:[21]

      • 34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"

      • 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"

      • 69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"[22]

      (Taken from: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp)

It's already happening, you're just not paying attention.
For example, FBI crime statistics show that violent crime has been steadily decreasing since the early 90's, with 2009 having the lowest per-capita murder rate in 45 years-- and it was even lower in 2010. In the same time frame, firearms sales have been increasing steadily. A correlation exists, if not necessarily a causation.
With respect to the numbers above, please note that violent crimes committed with firearms occur 436,000 times per year or around 8%, while defensive use of firearms to stop, prevent or deter a crime occurs anywhere between 989,883 to 1,029,615 times each year-- that's more than double. So yes, firearms in the hands of a responsible, law-abiding citizen can and does have a positive impact on our crime level.

You may also want to explore this:

Gun Town, USA: Kennesaw, GA, where it is the law to own a firearm.

The key point: "25 years murder-free" and "The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law."

I hope they catch this guy and rid our society of such a psychopath very quickly!! There are sick psychopaths of every race, color, and creed and murder is wrong, no matter the color of the skin of the shooter or the victim!! This is rather similar to the DC snipers. As to those who didn't read the article, it stated that a white man in a white pickup was seen in the area in three of the attacks which is why the police are looking for a white male in a white pickup.

Now, this is something I was afraid was going to happen with all the media attention on Trayvon. Too much racial bias, too many out there stirring the pot of racism and if a pot is kept simmering it will boil over. I have been asking for cooler heads and reason to be used in place of the non-stop media barrage and, of course, that's not going to happen. I hope I am wrong here, I really, really hope I am wrong. I hope this is an isolated nutcase and not some 'bubba' looking to get even for all the Black Panther trash talk.

Laura-3089574 jumping to defend Obama with the most recent jobs numbers is silly.

You attack the GOP and Tea Party for doing nothing since "taking control" in 2010 and then you turn around and praise Obama for what "he" has done in the past 24 months. In case you don't realize, 24 months is two years. So, you are saying in the same time frame that the GOP and tea party are "in control" for all negative yet the one positive thing (if you really think the economy is positive) you give credit to Obama as if he has "control".

Try understanding that our goverment is a joint venture. The GOP does nothing good or bad on its own. Just like your savior Obama does nothing good or bad on his own. Honestly, what can a president do without support within the goverment? If anything has been accomplished both good or bad in the past two years, they all deserve credit. They are all the same and by you acting like there is a difference it only shows how far in the sand your head is.... pure propaganda.

The government can only help provide an atmosphere (laws on businesses, tax reform, etc) where business can can have confidence to expand. And since the Republicans have controlled congress for the recent past, it is them creating the atmosphere. No president has much to do with it. Better learn a little about both government and economics.

      Tek,

Nobody is discounting it, but before they updated the story saying the man in question was white guy, they just sort of alluded to it being racially motivated before knowing who the cops were looking for. Now that they have disclosed the suspect is a white guy in a white pickup, it very well could be a payback shooting. I am not looking forward to when the economy really does go into toilet.

This is what happens when you give morons power or in this case power tools in terms of the talking heads in the media. No news , or worse bad news for your "regime boy" be it GWB or BO, and you help create it. This is terrible, the media fans the flames of racism as a distraction, and the dlites laugh their asses off while they take more of your money. Divide and conquer is the name of the game, just the more easier to rip you off economically in the end. White and blacks will be at each others throats while the 1% get richer.

Its amazing how little empathy white people have for people of color, especially black people, that even when we're being terrorized it is somehow our fault. And that is the vibe I'm getting from upwards of 80% of the commenters on here (most who I assume are white).

It already has - You're just not paying attention. The States with the most legal gun ownership have the lowest crime rates.

These shootings are a direct result of an insane murdering @!$%# who had a gun thinking he had some license to use it. You claiming it was because of NBC doing what ever they did to the tape has nothing to do with it. Is it your wish to justify an insane murdering @!$%# shooting people with his gun? If so, you need to ask yourself what is wrong with your thinking. It sounds like instagating and trouble making on your part.

The blacks killing blacks is ironic to me. Their ancestors fought for freedom ( their masters could kill them) and then civil rights (whites lynching and killing them and not prosecuted) and who knew we could just set back and wait and they start killing each other by the thousands. Not very intelligent, indeed.

But everyone knows that the media never says the skin color of a black man doing something bad to a white man or woman. The media is on a continuing brain washing tour of impressionable minds. Over in Fort Collins Colorado 4 black foot ball players chased down some ST Patrick day partiers and assaulted them but the partiers had knives to protect themselves. The media said nothing about the partiers being white just that the football players were cut up in the scuffle by unidentified partiers. But that same news station gladly tells the color of oklahomas unidentified shooter. This type of biased coverage is going to be all over the mainstream news like never before because they are trying to cover up the blantant irresponsible news coverage of george zimmerman.

So, Pal, with this story of black football players, you're trying to say that whites being harassed, by blacks (if the were) is as significant as murders of blacks?

And, before Zimmerman shot an unarmed kid, the right hated Latinos. Is that the pecking order--white, Latino, black? Where the Native Americans, Asian Americans and the Neo-Nazis fit in this pecking order that exists only inside the mind of a person filled with hate?

Being both black and white, I hope that one day people realize what really matters. My black family loves to hate and my white family loves to hate..... STOP, I am both of you and it hurts me every time to see this kind of talk. Nobody is better, nobody is superior.

I don't know this as fact, but it sounds gang related to me. Shootings in the same general area, ages of those shot. Could be a cleaning out of the old guard, happens now and then, could be wrong. Tulsa's a rough town.

To say that Tulsa is a "rough town" is inaccurate. There are a lot of great people living here. It seems that you are condemning the entire city for the acts of one possibly two persons. This is a tragedy and people are concerned and on edge. Please pray for the families who have lost loved ones and for the two people who are in the hospital recovering.

Hey Tony, are you some kind of an idiot or something??? Does it seem plausable to you that 5 victims aged between early thirties and mid fifties with zero connection to each other - does that sound like a "gang connection"??? What kind of gang would that be? The AARP Bloods??? If they had been all been in their teens or earlier twenties within a couple years of age from each other, then I might understand the assumption but what you just said there is ass-enine if you catch my drift.

Even the head of the police is saying he has never seen so many shootings in such a short period of time in that area. And totally random and unconnected other than the color of their skin. Sometimes, the real answer is the one staring at you in the face.

Now before every white person goes around screaming "why us"...no one is saying the killer is white. Who the bleep knows, it could be any race, hispanic/asian/hell it could even be a black murder for all we know. No one is making assumptions to the race of the killer - but its totally stupid and delusional to deny the simple fact that black people were clearly being targeted here by what appears to be a pattern murderer. I don't know if 5 shootings constitutes a serial killer - I have no idea what the threshold is. But someone is on a rampage and needs to be caught ASAP.

So why don't we focus on that and have some sympathy for the victims rather than the usual automatic paranoia defensive attitude every time something bad happens to a black person even when clearly something is strange is going on.

There can't be older gang members?? Does anyone know of an age limit for this?? What does happen to teens that are gang members when they hit there 20's, 30's, 40's??? Do they suddenly have an epithany and change to solid citzens?? GAng members ofen have a short lifespan but not all get killed from gang violence. I have watched shows on hispanic gang member and even though they are in their 40"s and 50's they are stil active members who control the groups. Wouldn't it be the same for all types of gangs??

Some have stated that survivors claim to have seen a white male in a white truck. Would that be a white hispanic, white asian, white black, white indian etc..??? IF it was a white person they certainly would have to be seriously nuts to go into a black neighborhood and start killing blacks. If caught he would likely never make it to jail alive. To those who even think it's ok to drag Zimmerman into this story are slightly nuts too. That case has nothing to do with this one. What are we to blame all societys' ills on George zimmerman now??? Wow that sure is giving him one hell of a lot of power that he really doesn't have or ever wanted.

Yes, it could be gang related if someone is trying to prove his "worth." It appears that most of these people were shot before daylight--it could have been someone just driving around shooting. We don't know if it is gang-related, or some white person who plans to scrape his knuckles and bang his head and claim "self-defense" or what.

I don't know that I would be concerned if I were a black person living in the nicest part of Tulsa (and, yes, there are some very wealthy areas with a fair concentration of African Americans in Tulsa), but I'd be concerned if I were in the same kind of neighborhood these people are. I'd worry about the neighborhoods at this point, not the race.

But, yes, there are some nutcases in the Tulsa area and throughout Oklahoma, just as there are anywhere--someone could have come in from the Little Dixie area and just started shooting random black people because of . . . oh, whatever. People like that don't need a rational reason. I'm glad they are looking for the shooter--and I hope they find him (well, probably "him") quickly.

What is it with all you jerko**s talking trash about the white folk. If anyone has reason to hate a race it would be me!!! I've had my house broken into (BTW I was one of thoes stats quotes by WMG 21) who used my gun to protect my family... Then after the police investigated fully the local chapter of the NAACP started trying to pressure the police to arrest me, eventhough it was more then obvious that I was justified in what I did.. Namely dude was in my home, and obviously he was trying to rob my home AND he also had a gun of his own.. However the local NAACP out where I live tried like he** to call it racially motivated.. After looking really stupid they eventually backed off, but only after I was forced to move after having local thugs throw various things including human crap and rocks as well as several different love letters telling what the local thugs would like to do to my family. Did this black version of the KKK apologise to me, or make a public statement saying they were wrong.. NO!!! However do I hold all black people in contempt for that.. NO!!! Call me a craker go ahead.. Just remember that this shooting spree was committed by persons unknown.. I'm sick of the whole race issue. ALL RACIST TRASH CAN KISS MY A$$ NO MATTER WHAT SIDE OF THE COLOR SPECTRUM YOUR SKIN COLOR IS!!!!

Pixie, 3 or more murders does not make someone a serial killer, they can also be a spree killer. Serial killers normally kill over a period of time not one night. Serial killers target certain individuals for specific reasons and kill in a more personal way. Spree killers may target particular people but normally it is just random and short lived. I went to school with a spree killer who is on trial for killing 8 people in Illinois about 4 or 5 years ago.

Either way, this person was probably white since the survivours/ witnesses said he was, and it was probably racism that drove him to it. But the more we talk about racism and make a big deal about it all we are doing is adding fuel to the fire. Whether you are racist or not the fact remains that we have a lot of ignorant people in this country and they will do ignorant things, like Forest Gump said " stupid is as stupid does" When we educate people properly they tend not to be racist. Pride in your nationality is great and should be encouraged but we should also teach to appreciate others nationalities and race. We can all learn a lot from each other.

I don't know, but I do know college grads who are "racist enough" to deny people of color jobs, loans, dignity, etc -- or at least as much as they can within the bounds of the law, which is supported by numerous studies. Isn't that enough? Mostly validated by the comments on this newsboard today. I don't think these folks commenting are Jim-Bob living in their grandmothers basement. The demographic of people reading the news I'd assume are at least people with a high school education, and savvy enough to access and browse websites.

As a European Born Woman I am appalled at the violence in this country, and especially against African American men and women. It is a total discrase to see and hear this happening every day. What has gone wrong with American Society in the past 20 years and especially the Trovan in Florida and now Oklahome, something has to happen soon or we will be noted for the loonies of the world. Pray for Peace for everybody.

Go back to Europe then hon and face the Muslims. Tocqueville called us a nation of killers and that is what we are. Blacks are victims of their own making 95-99% of the time, and interracial crime is 8-1 against whites, so why are you boo hooing about. These same stats are very similar in regards to Europe and the Muslims and S Saharan African population that has made a foothold in places like Sweden and Finland. Finnish girls get gang raped in Helsinki and the PC crowd doesn't bat an eye.

I,m sure the police have ruled out the gang related aspect as it is standard procedure to pull criminal records of a murder victim for posible clues. If the past history is clear ask witnesses, and in this case and I'm sure more than one stated a white male in a white truck.

As for the chicken or the egg, it was the egg, it fell from the sky and landed in an Easter Basket.

The article says the police were looking for a white male in a white truck, It says nothing about the survivors having said this. My guess is witnesses in the area after the shootings occured gave this info.

Whatever!Blacks shoot blacks everyday.Look at the numbers of murders from blacks on blacks everyday. The NAACP is trying to create a race war. They wanted to be treated the same, yet they ask to be treated so different. Not a racist bone in my body but this is spiraling out of control with the media encouraging racism by trying to make white people look like the "aggressive" ones out to murder black people when the facts are that blacks kill each other more than any other race.

I did not realize that the killer had been caught...

My bad for missing the part where the killer's race was determined.

BTW, whites more commonly kill whites, but it's nice to know you don't consider whites "aggressive" enough to worry you. ; )

I don't think the NAACP is attempting to start a race war. I think about how we all came together as a COUNTRY subsequent to 9/11. We did not see color, we just saw that our country had been attacked by our enemies. We did not see color because people of many colors and cultures lost their lives. In Viet Nam people were from all types of ethnic backgrounds, no matter what your racial feelings, you knew you had to rely on each other to survive. This is still the USA and when we are attacked we all are attacked. I was not a Nixon fan, but I supported him because he was our Commander-in-Chief. I feel that there is so much disdain for President Obama is because he is a man of color.

Actually, the Department of Justice found that about 1/4 of all "stranger homicides" (victims did not know the shooter) are interracial. Some things cannot be simplified as "blacks kill blacks."

It seems to me that the only truly common thread in all these murderous events is that it is the male of the species of all races, that is committing all the violence. I think we need to address that problem first and foremost.

Why would justice for a Black person so annoy you. Is it guilt because you have certain feelings toward them. When any person kills another, except in self defense it is an atrocity. Nobody in their right mind wants a race war, or a war of any kind. Thou doth protest to much when describing your bones.

Okay, it is still too early to start all of the speculation on this. We DON'T know who the shooter is or what the motivation was. It could very well be that the only thing in common with the victims was opportunity, not race.

We need to stop being so hypersensitive to this simply because a black person was killed, and focus more on the fact that a PERSON -- or in this case several persons -- were killed.

I say this because if we ONLY focus on this being a "black killing", we are playing into the agendas of those who only want to see things in black and white.

Whoever this shooter or shooters is or are, they need to be eliminated ASAP. I don't care what their motivation is any more than I care what the motivation of a shark is when they attack people. Both are dangerous animals that need to be taken out of the box immediately.

Guns create problems just like a kitchen fork creates fat people.

Look back a few years to 9-11 and witness that most of the people running from the falling towers in NYC were covered in gray dust to the point that you could not tell if they were white, black blue, orange. They
were referred to by the media as citizens. I am white; one of my best friends is black. During high school we hung out together, played football together, raised hell together, we even doubled dated. This was in the late 60's early 70's and I was looked down on by a lot of folks in our small town because I hung out with "those colored kids". Those colored kids have become lifelong friends I can call on at any time for anything. I call his parents mom and dad. (my parents passed several years ago) My WHITE kids refer to him as their uncle his sister is their aunt. His kids call me Uncle. My grand-kids refer to him as their uncle and we love each other just as if we were family. It is not the color of a person’s skin that defines them it is their actions. The sooner that ALL PEOPLE stop this race crap and learn to judge a person by their actions and not their color, the sooner we can get along with each other. There is white trash, there is black trash there is trash in every color. There are thugs in every walk of life. It is the persons internal qualities that make them, not the stereo type attached to them.

I will climb off my soap box and wait for the hate mail that is sure to come from this. But I will accept it and life will go on. Put an "X" on your calender one month from today and when that day comes around as you look at that "X" ask yourself what it was for. Chances are that you will not remember.

Really? That is strange because I live in a fairly large city and I have never had a weapon of any kind used to threaten me. Hell I don't even know anyone who has. So what you are saying is it just hasn't happened yet? Lay off the Road Warrior movies.

I think you must live a paranoid life and have some post apocolyptic fantasy where everyone is out to kill, rob, or rape you. I feel sorry for you because living a life like that must be very tiresome and living a life of fear is not living a life at all.

AirThief I own and have used several weapons in my life. I Don't live in a large city but have had to at least show them on several occassions. Once during a home breakin while the thug tries to rob us after I gotten home from surgery. He was met at the front door by my 12ga. He quickly left after me racking a round into the chamber. I did not have to fire a shot.

You may never need a weapon but I have the right to protect me and my family. It is called the 2AM. I could use my car or truck but it takes alot and a weapon is easier and concealable.

Ron, outlawing guns won't make you any safer. Outlawing booze during Prohibition didn't stop people from drinking, just created a black market. Outlawing drugs in 1908 didn't stop cocaine and heroin selling or using either. People who want something will find ways to get it. People who are criminals(socio or psychopaths) don't give a @!$%# about laws, so they will always find a way to get a gun. The violence in this country makes th "Wild West" look tame, and everyone, including the ladies were packing.

I have many guns for recreational shooting and hunting. I have never shot anyone but have displayed them to ward off a possible attack. I am quite sure my wife and I would have been in dire straits if I had not been armed. These murders are a disgrace to humanity. The Florida shooting is still up for debate. The facts are not all in on that one. I could eat a bowl of alphabet soup and @!$%# a better argument than most of what I read here.

Vicky, his sentence "racism exists and black on black crime exists" is NOT a racist comment. What he is saying is that white on black, black on black, and black on white crimes exist. Don't LOOK for the dark side of every comment... it's not becoming.

But in that case, his comment is irrelevant since this was a white on black crime, according to the article.

This North-Tulsa area is a black neighbor-HOOD so why is it always racial when black persons are shot? The facts are very clear that most black shootings in this country are a result of black on black crime usually involving gangs or drugs. I can't wait to see the facts and prove that another media source is the true racist.

The majority of comments in response to this news story at the latest count was from white folks jumping the gun and focusing on the racial angle and getting on the defensive.,,,while responses from black folks are understandably equally quick to run up the race angle. The facts are that these senseless acts occur everyday in America and they should each be taken on their own individual merits as first and foremost a crime which should never be allowed to be presented to the citizens of America as business as usual. We should never lose sight of the fact that someone has lost their life, property or liberty...after-all America is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Whatever we do, we should remember that all men are born equal with inalienable rights...or so the Declaration of Independence and Constitution would have me believe.
Whether it's a black person killing a white person during a robbery or a white person going berzonkers and killing an innocent black person, they are both immoral, wrong, degrading, criminal, horrific and we should all agree to that before going to the secondary issue of motive and race if we have to....unfortunately, we have to; the fact of the matter is that, historically, whites have a greater preponderance to annihilate blacks (or kill other minorities) because of their historical need to maintain and control the means of wealth and production in society, the reprehensible means they have employed to attain and maintain that need and their paranoia based on the ruthless, cold-bloodedly strategic, premeditated and deliberate manner in which they've treated the minorities in their storied past while using them to build wealth for members of their race (albeit friends and family).
There is a class of poor whites in America that were left behind because they couldn't cash in on the bonanza of gain solely based icon how you look but have gained a discriminate, skewered and biased advantage because since the control of the system, the writing and application of the letter of the law, the businesses and economic muscle as well as every other facet or branch of society is virtually dominated by whites (especially the media), they have a much greater likelihood of getting a job or a better job than the average black, fees are being raised daily in our colleges with the knowledge that only those with deep pockets will be able to send their kids to college, the implementation of the laws and actions of law enforcement has given us statistics such as the fact that while 16% or so of our population is black, they make up fully 60% of all Federal prisoners. For similar offenses, blacks are being incarcerated for longer sentences at a greater rate while whites are given probation, suspended sentences or even exonerated.
There is little wonder why it would seem understandable if blacks seem put upon singled out because of the color of their skin; it would appear to be understandable if blacks took the position that the daily occurrences of crime in which a white person deliberately goes after a black is systematic genocide disguised as justifiable homicide. Do blacks commit crimes against whites...yes. However, while that is inexcusable as well, it is usually based on a profit motive regardless of color. It is rare to read about a black person going on a shooting rampage in a group of whites or black people, mass murdering folks at college campuses or bankrupting poor people out of millions and billions of dollars and making their lives a a living hell. Usually most reported black-on-white crimes are one-on-one, profit-based acts of stupidity, drug-related, assault or domestic violence. These are crimes, the commission of which are common to people of all races, but when you specifically target a person or people, solely based on the color of their skin, you are a racist and don't deserve to exist and be allowed to exercise the power to deprive others of their basic right to exist.

You are absolutely correct in your statement. The whites that find it absurd, sensless, stupid, without merrit, etc etc etc, are the ones who think slavery wasnt all that bad, that the killing of Emmit Till wasnt all that bad, the beating of Rodney King (I will say I think he needed to be subduded but not get his ass whipped) was justified, that racism doesnt really exist, that we should just get over it, that most blacks are "HOOD"lums who only eat fried chicken, that were all on welfare with no education, etc etc etc. These are the people who disgust me. And in my own defense, there are blacks who are mirror images of these people, who are lazy, shiftless, thieving, on welfare and not educated, who play the race card every chance they get. All this to say we are not all the same, I am a retired AF E9, have a Masters degree and will retire from the US govt again soon, at that point I will be leaving this country, never to return, because it is a cesspool of corruption and hatred, greed and envy, starting at the very top of the "food chain", I am so looking forward to the day I leave.

I live here in Tulsa. This Jack Henderson likes to shoot his mouth off every chance he can get. He says and does nothing when the black people kill their own in north Tulsa. The gang problem is bad and innocent kids and bystanders are being killed. He does nothing. Now that a "Maybe" white man in a white pickup did the shooting, he has made it to the national news. We had a horrible situation a year or so back where a black man was shot at 3 or so in the am at a chicken shack, and people stepped over him to get their chicken. Nobody gave up the shooter to the cops, and even got in the way of the EMSA and the cops. This Jack Henderson was nowhere and said nothing about this. North Tulsa keeps voting for this man and he does nothing for his district, and the community does noting to help the police, although they complain constantly. There are a few who really do try, but they are out numbered, and no, all of north Tulsa is not black. North is black and white and Hispanic. I have been in the elementary schools there as a volunteer.

Even if you go to Europe you'll find that there's a lot of prejudice. Mostly against muslims and in some places against blacks. And it seems when economic times get tough people take out their frustrations against those who are different.

This one does sound like pure racism. They are looking for a white man, so I guess the eyewitnesses have talked and now we know.

you "guess" ? Maybe we should wait and really see who the suspect is. BTW, that does not mean all white people are out to kill black people either.

Where do you get the idea that "they are looking for a white man"? In that area it is more likely to be a black person or a Native American that is responsible. However, I was not there so I will not speculate. Like the Zimmerman/Martin situation I will wait to see what the courts decide.

Because law enforcement knows more than the rest of us. They would not even bring up it being hate crime if they didn't know it was a white man.

Just look at the people raving on & on about this one spree killing. I'm been reading true crime for many years & yes Virginia, there are serial killers who are black. Also white & Asian.

But, as I said earler, the skin you are born with doesn't put you on a team. So just because sometimes blacks kill whites does not make it O.K. for whites to mass murder blacks. Sheesh!!! The article is about a serial killer of African Americans. The fact that there may be situations where there have been serial killers of white folks really doesn't address what is happening HERE in THIS situation.

I would tend to lean towards the shootings being the beginning of a group wanting to hold an entire community hostage, in their own homes. The survivors will have some details for the P.D and if it appears to be a hate drime it becomes federal.

There's nothing like getting drunk and stoned and smashing through a Starbuck's window with a fraternity bro who looks like Adam Levine every time my favorite sports franchise loses in the playoffs. The best ones, however, occur in Europe, where the sports hooligans are known for their rioting prowess. Which country is reigning random sports brawl champion this year? When's the World Cup, we can wait and decide then; maybe take a stadium or two out while we do so.

Although all those white college kids rioting after the nat'l championship a week ago was a valid attempt. Oh, how about Woodstock 99? That was a great one!

I hope the shooter was black. Otherwise, Jesse and Al will pop up to do more fund raising. And, if black, the black leaders will keep everything super quiet.

Why doesn't white people have their own Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton whenever you guys kill each other? You do it all the time. Of course you have Nancy Grace and a few whole cable networks that feature nothing but white-on-white crime all day, and that's good money there (you know, making the daily rundown of every single "It was a peaceful town except for Barney the local child molester/mass murdering Girl Scout troop leader. We never thought it could happen here" story read like "an isolated incident"), but seriously who cares when whites wipe out a few other whites, right? Do whites have an Al Sharpton for white crimes? Do yall care about white crimes anymore? Hey, stop molesting that little kid and listen a second, my pale-skinned friend.

Since whites are more likely to expericence a violent crime from someone they know - in a segregated society that means white on white crime - or someone who lives in their immediate comunity - again, white-on-white crime in a increasingly re-segregated American culture - then it really does make more sense to focus more on communities of color because thats what we've always done. And, hey, if we're arresting more blacks obviously that means they commit more crimes, so its all win/win. If ever there is a time when we arrest more whites than blacks then the system must be breaking down because we KNOW whites just don't ever commit crimes ever, not once. So lets focus on what works and what we can prove through arrest records and stop all this silly race baiting of innocent, beyond reproach gentle white folk.

Let's just hope for sanity's sake there is never, ever a time when the FBI or Census data shows the great majority of this nation's arrests are whites commiting crimes or the whole social contract will break down and we will have to deal with all the BS we've been smoking lo these many centuries. Quick, fabricate some data before someone gets wise...

Racist stereotypes: if they're good enough for great-grandpa, they're good enough for me!

I would be a little more hesitant in putting down a rabid dog than the type of people who commits these crimes. People have DIED and the only thing you hope for because it would justify your bigoted politics is that the killer is a certain race. Most people who are murdered are murdered by people of their own race...simply because we are still a fairly segregated society. But here, witnesses have described the killer as white. Whatever the race of the killer, there is a serial killer on the loose.

Thank you GainesvilleGreg, for the link.

Before I saw your post/link, I was sitting here thinking how depressing it is to read so many hateful comments. Not just on here, but on just about every story, the hate is spread back and forth. It just seems to get worse as time goes on.

I think of silly things, like how I wish I could wave a magic wand and everyone would start being nice to each other. Or maybe one day we would all wake up and be blind and not see color or race, but someone would still find a way to hate.

It seems like, even if someone writes something to be positive, someone else will fire back at them with a hate message or put them down for trying. I was thinking of not reading comments anymore, but then I saw your link and decided to take a chance and go there. I'm glad I didn't stop reading comments or I wouldn't have seen yours. It really brought up my spirits, so I thank you for that. :)

By the way, I also put it under my "Favorites" so I can go there whenever I want to.

Oklahoma, I would punch myself dead if I ever was to live in that MUST-hateful Place. The name sounds like vomit to me, Oklahaaahoomaaaa! Yaaaaaaaak! One of the damn places in the USA following Alabama, Mississipi....etc. Backward morons full of hate for no educated reason.
