It seems like teachers act on their desires more than any other work place I can think of, they prey on each other even (far) more than on the students. When I was in Junior and Senior High, it seemed like half the teachers were doing each other. There must have been 3 marriages a year between teachers, not to mention those lesbian PE teachers.

My Ex (Award winning teacher) slept with a co-worker at her school - it was basically two egomaniacs testing each other (over drinks after work), their little game of Dare. I guess the DARE program for teachers isn't the same one they teach the kids.

And I am not defending the girl but after my thoughts of what an a$$ she is, I keep remembering she is only 18. Yes, she knows right from wrong, I know. But think back then when we were that age. We had that "we are invincible" persona. She hasn't even lived an adult life to see what damage she has done to others. It's simply the fact that they are put in a position of power over the largest segment of impressionable minds possible. No other job gives that kind of access to a group of people so easily influenced. As time goes on familiarity breeds contempt. Contempt for the rules, contempt for any moral qualms they might have had towards bedding someone so vulnerable. When all is said and done though, while it may seem like an "epidemic", there are only a few dozen cases a year of teacher abuse like this, out of 7.2 million teachers in the US and over 77 million students. Basically you are looking at something like .0002 percent of teachers are doing things they shouldn't. In the grand scheme of things, that is a minuscule amount.

I feel badly for the girl. I don't think she meant anyone any harm - it's just that she didn't have the benefit of years of experience of perspective behind her, like so many of the other Monday morning quarterbacks.

It's tough to be that age and be passionate and gung-ho about something... only to realize that it was all built on sand. It takes time to grow up.

She's learned a painful and valuable lesson and hopefully she will repair the damage with family and friends and move on. Perhaps in prison, Mr. Hooker can get some help and self-understanding as to what makes him pursue relationships with little girls as opposed to women from his own peer group.

If we look back in time and see the line crossing that took place where there were clear boundary policies and cell phone restrictions not being followed by certain teachers, that is where justification is no longer acceptable. This is where school officials need to step in. But for some reason in 2012, they still won't. And in many cases, they turn and blame the messenger or the one waving the red flag of concern. We need immediate Legislation to stop this mess. Locally, as a community, we need to stop covering our eyes to these earlier grooming processes and teach our children what grooming really means, why it is not ok, and how to report it. Teachers who continue practicing grooming should be sued by the School District for tort. They should lose their jobs and their pensions. We need to get these unhealthy lonely teachers who cannot build adult relationships, out of the educational system and away from kids. As adults, it is a teachers job to get themselves the psychiatric help they need to prevent causing anyone any further harm.

I don't normally condone violence, but in the case of predators like this, there usually is no other solution. They can't be "treated" or "rehabilitated." If following your heart means betraying your spouse and devastating your own children, then your heart doesn't matter compared to them! The California Statute of Limitations is the oddest thing I find about this case. It enables the State of California WHC to go waaay back to 1998 (13 years ago!) to dredge up something to throw in his face and prosecute him for because they're mad at him for what he is doing (legally) today. It looks to me like Cali law is very vague in that in many cases a victim pretty much gets to choose when the statute starts because they "suddenly remember something" and decide to go to police with an accusation 13 years later.... or more! We're not talking murder cases here. The alleged victim should have acted against the alleged offender legally within a set time after the crime is committed. There is a bit too much flexibility here. It does not have the feel of a Statute of Limitations law, but it does feel like the legal loophole that allows everyone to disregard any reasonable SOLs. It is justified with panic language like "Won't ANYONE think of the children" and propagandistic terms like "predator".. Talk about trying someone in the press!

NO offense, but why didn't the mother step in sooner? Was this girl sneaky enough to hide this from her mother and if so how? If a teacher was calling the house alot and the mother didn't do anything about it, I fault the mother. The only reasons why a teacher should call a student's house is to talk to the parent about a child's failing school or if the teen was babysitting the children as a part time job.
