Subscribe to RSSThere is new evidence this morning that a shooting spree in Oklahoma may have been motivated by hate after one of the suspects was found to have posted racially charged comments on his Facebook page. NBC's Gabe Gutierrez reports.
On Friday morning, the residents of Tulsa’s predominantly black north side woke to mayhem: Five people had been shot in their neighborhood, apparently at random. Three were dead. The shooters, they learned, were at large.
They feared leaving their homes and worried they couldn’t make it to church on Easter Sunday. Witnesses hesitated to call police, anxious they would be called snitches.
Tulsa police Maj. Walter Evans was charged with forming a task force to track down the shooters. He appealed to the press, asking them to spread the word that the police department had opened a Crime Stoppers tip line. Nearly 40 tips came in.
“In my 23 years I’ve never seen a crime as heinous as this, but I’ve also never seen such an outpouring of support from the community,” Evans said later.
One Tulsa shooting suspect posted racist remark on Facebook
Police learned of a young man named Jake England, a 19-year-old whose father had been killed two years before, almost to the day. Carl England had been shot by an African-American man during a scuffle, and England, it appeared from a posting Thursday on his Facebook wall, had an ax to grind.
“Today is two years that my dad has been gone shot by a f------ n----- it's hard not to go off between that and sheran I'm gone in the head,” he wrote, according to the Tulsa World.
Sheran was Sheran Hart Wilde, England’s fiancée, who killed herself in January. Susan Sevenstar, an England family friend, told the Associated Press that the couple had an infant and that England wasn’t in his right mind.
His roommate, a 32-year-old man named Alvin Lee Watts who liked to take shirtless photos of himself, replied to England's post: “I kno i miss them 2. My last meomeries were great ones of them. Its nt goodbye its c u later.” Watts was recently single, according to his posts on the social network site, and frustrated by people he described as “haterz.”
Watts, it appeared on Facebook, had supported England as he grieved. In one post, Watts wrote, “Me n my bro jake jus chill’in. jake putting lil jake 2 sleep. Watch’in country videos.”
On Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday, police allege that the two men hit the streets of north Tulsa in a white Chevrolet pickup with a loud exhaust. Witnesses told police that a white man in the truck stopped pedestrians for directions and then shot them in the back as they walked away. It is unclear who pulled the trigger.
Their victims, identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31, were black.
That night, England returned to Facebook: “Chilling at that house people talking s--- on me for some s--- I didn't do ... it just mite be the time to call it quits I I hate to say it like that but I'm done if something does happen tonite be ready for another funeral later.”
By Saturday afternoon, the police were desperate for leads. They asked the press to spread the word that they were opening a Crime Stoppers hot line. Within two hours, the tips flooded in. Maj. Evans set up Operation Random Shooter.
They recovered a weapon and found England’s burned pickup 10 miles from his home. Within hours, one tipster pointed them to the suspects.
Tulsa police Chief Chuck Jordan said a helicopter tracked them to a house in Turley, Okla., a city of 3,000 people north of Tulsa, where they were arrested. They are being held on three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
When Council Member Jack Henderson, who represents north Tulsa, got the call about their arrests, he dropped to his knees to pray. “Thank God,” he said. He said he believes the police department has proved itself to the black community, and that his constituents may start coming forward with tips to solve dormant cases.
Neither Watts or England has previously been convicted of a serious crime. Court records show that Watts was charged in 2009 with aggravated assault and battery, but those charges were dismissed. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for domestic violence. He paid a $649.90 court fine.
England has been charged once, for driving with a suspended license.
Now the investigation turns to whether Watts and England should be charged with hate crimes.
“If we did have a case, if someone was obviously engaged in a hate crime, we need to show the community that’s what we charge them for,” Chief Jordan said.
But Sevenstar, the England family friend, insisted to the AP that this was not a hate crime, adding that England was Cherokee Indian.
"He didn't care what your color was,” she said. “It wasn't a racist thing.”

Some people need a lesson in sticking to the topic, and keeping their mouth shut when the topic does not follow their preconceived notions.
Two different scenarios. One was legal, one is not. Learn the differences and stop trying (failing) to use one case to manipulate another. We already have MSM for that. Everything MSNBC puts out lately has to have a racial spin to it. Maybe they need to fire the whole lot of them and start over with a fresh crew. And one that actually knows journalism, grammar, spelling and fact finding, plus verification.
They reported themselves the suspects were in a predominantly black north side. Of course their victims would almost certainly be black. DUH! Sounds like anyone who had the misfortune of encountering these two would be victims, regardless of race. BUT, we have to sell newspapers. We have to get good ratings. Let's put out what is guaranteed to generate readers and viewers.

The media is controlled by government and puts out what it is told to put out, and BLACKS out what it is told to black out.

We probably have more guns in N America than most countries combined, they continue to take away restrictions and regulations on them, it doesn't take much it seems to get a license to carry(Zimmerman) and the shooters and victims always get bottled up in our wacko legal system..Yes we're headed right.
I do not see how anyone can say that this as not racially motivated with a straight face. All you need to do is look at the quotes from the Facebook posts to know this was racially motivated and in apparent retaliation for his father's murder. To try and say someone is not racist because they are also a minority is absurd. Some of the biggest racists I have met have been minorities themselves. Both of them are going to wind up being charged with hate crimes and, if convicted, spend a very long time in prison.

If there is 'selective prosecution' based on race or ethnicity, it could lead to a constitutional challenge of the law based on the 'Equal Protection' clause of the Constitution.

Agreed. It seems pretty straight-forward to me, but the Cherokee suspect will probably claim 'insanity', based on his Facebook comment about his mental state.
I'm curious about the circumstances of his father's killing by a Black man, but that's no excuse for murdering other innocent people.
I do have some reservations about how msnbc has handled the Trayvon Martion/George Zimmerman case, since their coverage seems to have been designed to fan the flames of racial divisions. That was shameful.
Where's the nat'l coverage about the old white couple in Tulsa that got beaten, robbed, RAPED, and left to die by 4 blacks in Tulsa 3 weeks ago? Yes, raped. The woman was like 90 years old and they raped her. She later died of her injuries. Where's the news coverage? Where's the outspoken White advocates? Where's the hate crime charges?

These events and like the one in shamford, fl could be avoided, if the black community would form Militia, and protect their community. Carl England was shot and killed April 5, 2010, about a quarter-mile east of where the body of one of the shooting victims was found.
The man arrested in Carl England’s death, Pernell Demond Jefferson, was charged with pointing a firearm and is serving a prison sentence through October 2014, the World reported. Jefferson is black.
It's got to be a bit frustrating that your dad goes to help defend your sister in a dispute at her apartment complex, gets shot and killed by a guy and then the guy is only charged with pointing a firearm. Not that this is justification for what happened, but one can certainly understand, especially with the nature of the news media today and all the race-baiting that is going on (continuously publishing and even manipulating stories of crime against black victims talking about how the motivation was racist while ignoring crimes against white victims when the motivation is racist--and these people are never charged with hate crimes, but I digress) why a young man who already had a reason to be angry with the system and even with blacks would snap.

Where were the good people of Tulsa during the Greenwood riot? That was definitely a hate crime and not one person was ever charged with murdering hundreds of people because of their color. When will Tulsa owe up to that one and let the entire world know what they let happen?

I've got news for anyone that is unfamiler with north Tulsa, shootings happen here on a regular basis. Google homicide rate for Tulsa and you will see its not the lovely little city the media is portraying. between the meth and the gangs the north side has turned into a @!$%#hole.
EROCK my people have been in OK since 1832 and I lived there for 14 years. I went to U of Tulsa so I am very familiar with T-town, Greenwood denial until pressed to face it and I do know the hatred that abounds in OK. I still come to Tulsa every year to see family and the only change I see is the Tulsa campus for the better and the moving of Oral Roberts brass hands.

When you find that perfect utopia where everyone loves everyone and there is no discord, you be sure to let me know. Also, I've never spoken to anyone who denies that the Greenwood riots happened and I've lived here all my life. Like EROCK17 said, that was nearly a century ago. It's no longer a topic of daily conversation.

Also, no one has said it isn't a hate crime, the police are just being very careful with what they say and do right now. They may still be charged with hate crimes but the investigation is still ongoing.

Racism is on both sides homey. If that is all you have noticed changing in Tulsa your eyes are closed. Friday was a tragedy, no doubt about it. I believe the individuals responsible for altering Zimmerman's 911 call should be charged with crimes including enciting violence and possibly manslaughter charges, though that would be difficult to prove.
To say it wasn't a hate crime simply because he is Native American is absurd. Several Native American nations won't even recognize their own people simply for having African American blood in them, if that isn't racist I don't know what is. . .

Well, in a lot of ways, this is European racism. Europeans seem to classify everyone as either white or oppressed minorities--and they can't quite figure out that "minorities" aren't all the same, and that they do not like one another.
Over a 1000 black people walked the Trail of Tears as the slaves of their Cherokee owners--in fact, that's how a lot of black people got to Oklahoma in the first place. After the Civil War, since the Cherokees officially sided with the Confederacy, the Cherokees were forced by treaty to accept those black people as Cherokee citizens. They have been fighting this ever since--now that there are so many lawyers and professors amongst them, they've realized that the Cherokee Supreme Court can do whatever it wants and the BIA can't do anything to them--yeah, they've pretty well cut anyone related to Cherokee freedmen (whether or not they have any other relatives who are Cherokee), though they openly invite in anyone who is Cherokee and European.
The KKK once had a Grand Wizard who was Cherokee, and proud of it. Anyone who thinks that Native Americans are these wise, nature-loving, mystics who openly embrace everyone is a complete racist nut. The Cherokee nation based in Talequah (the one this man would belong to, probably) really dislikes freedman, and it's very common for their members to be anti-black.
This is like people arguing that George Zimmerman can't be anti-black because he's Hispanic. Anyone who thinks that is, in fact, a racist who divides people up into white and coloreds, and thinks all coloreds are the same.

as far as racism, i just don't get it. My grandparents use the "n" word at the dinner table once, and i was horrified. I actually said something, and i don't believe they were racist. it was just a differnce in generation and language.
I think everyone suffers from some sort of racism. I believe i am better than the next white boy, but that is part of human nature. It's part of male dominance, but i don't actually look at someones color to determine that, i just naturally want to think i am better than the next man. Is that where this comes from? i just dont understand it honestly.

Also not all Cherokee went west. Many fled south to Florida and eventually mixed with the Seminole and other pioneer settlers in Florida who also mixed with blacks fleeing slavery. That's the problem with stereotyping groups as a whole. Many groups are represented by the few who get all of the media attention.
As far as this story, it shows what happens when hate builds up inside. One race does something to another race who then does something back worse causing the other to react even more harshly. Soon the innocent are killed with absolutely nothing to be gained.
The media and leaders of various communities need to act responsibly and work to defuse the mess that is being fueled before it burns many on all sides.

Having grown up and still living in Tulsa, yes this England guy appears to be Native American, probably Cherokee as that is the most prominent tribe in this part of NE Oklahoma. Race issues are very complex here. Not just because of the historic black/white divide around the time of the 1921 Race Riots and beyond. The other suspect, Watts, said on Facebook he came from Muskogee. A town to Tulsa's southeast that also has many Native Americans as well as black people. So to make this a black/white issue oversimplifies and stirs emotions. It's not that easy.... clearly racist sentiments can be any race against any other race.

MLK once said something to the effect that "whites want tranquility to preserve the status quo, blacks want justice to promote equality." Tranquility is the absence of Blacks demanding equal rights and justice. Not talking about racism doesn't make it go away.
To be fair, the NAACP was founded in 1909, when the use of "Coloreds" was the norm.

I tell black kids that if they want to be safe they should dress up like white kids do. Of course, since hip-hop/rap culture is actually more targeted to suburban white teens than it is for urban black ones these days (afterall, who has more disposable income? Lil' Beckii Lynn and her can-pass-enough-for-black-to-spook-Mom's-Zumba-class DJ boyfriend, Skylar Logan), they are just as likely to end up in the clothes scared knee-jerks attribute to "hip-hip/rap culture" the point is moot, but I tell them anyways.
I could also tell them to dress up in a suit and tie all the time, but scared white folks tend to shoot blacks in business attire (see Malcom X, Martin Luther King Jr.), too, so I guess we can either only go out nude or bring a designated white spokesman wherever we go now. Its the only way to be sure.

My dad was murdered by a black man over 12.00 and his wedding ring, 2 months before my daughter was born. I haven't gone out and started killing blacks but I promise you I have a lot less trust in them because of it. Just like every black person who's ever been done wrong by a white has a lot less trust in us.

I love the way the media calls things "hate crime" due to race, etc. I think murder is hate. It doesn't matter what color, it's hate and evil. Yes, murder of any race, gender, age is evil. Period. End of discussion.
It's not the media, it's your legislators who wrote and voted in the hate cdrime LAWS in your area. Murder is not automatically a hate crime. People get murdered for all sorts of other reasons that hate...money or political advantage for example. Some people here need to read this:

On October 28, 2009 President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, attached to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010, which expanded existing United States federal hate crime law to apply to crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability, and dropped the prerequisite that the victim be engaging in a federally protected activity.
State laws
45 states and the District of Columbia have statutes criminalizing various types of bias-motivated violence or intimidation (the exceptions are AR, GA, whose hate crime statute was struck down by the Georgia Supreme Court in 2004, IN, SC, and WY). Each of these statutes covers bias on the basis of race, religion, and ethnicity; 32 cover disability; 31 of them cover sexual orientation; 28 cover gender; 14 cover transgender/gender-identity; 13 cover age; 5 cover political affiliation. and 3 along with Washington, D.C. cover homelessness.

Politicians create "classes" of people for their own political power and future. They write these laws as a way to justify their existence.
I only want the answer to one question. When someone kills another for "hating" him/her for being black, Asian, male, female, gay, straight, young or old.... is the victim any more dead than if they just wanted the persons property?
It's not wholly about the dead person, it's also about damage to the community and the victim's families and relatives. It also adds to the prosecutor's arsenal of motives.
4 years for murdering an unarmed man. I'd be irritated too but he should have waited 2 years for the guy to be released. In this case there is absolutely no justice! That is unless the boy is given 12 years for pointing a gun (4 years for each victim).
How's about a free pass for killing an unarmed KID, that is why that Trayvon case has become such an important case, people just don't get it, so I can just shot anyone and claim self defense and walk free. That is the biggest BS and we wonder why America is going too SH_T!

sad but fact of life people kill other people for a variety of reasons racial hatred, money, sex, jealousy all different peoples. Germans killed millions of russians, russians killed millions of germans, japanese killed millions of chinese, whites killed thousands of indians, jews and muslims muslims and jews need I go on. The human animal can be one vicious creature. This is but another example sad but not so different than any other random killing we hear too often.

I was going to paste the rap sheet for Pernell Jefferson aka Pernell Web, killer of Jake England's Father but as soon as I do someone is going to b***h. He has been in prison more than once and you can look that up yourself. Instead I will paste the story of what happened to Carl England.
On April 5, 2010, Carl England, 47, showed up at the apartment complex where his daughter lived with her boyfriend. The boyfriend had gotten into a fight Pernell Jefferson, 40, and had hit him with a baseball bat, the Tulsa World reported at the time.
Jefferson, who had been in prison on drug and weapons charges, then tried to break into the couple’s apartment but left, saying he planned to ‘settle the dispute.’
England and his daughter’s boyfriend went looking for Jefferson at the apartment complex. When the found him, England hit him with a stick and knocked him to the ground. Jefferson pulled out a gun and shot England in the chest, the World reported, killing him.
Jefferson, who is black, was arrested the next day when he showed up at a hospital. He was convicted of pointing a firearm. He is serving a six year prison sentence in the shooting. Carl England was killed at 3608 N. Quaker Ave. in northern Tulsa.
Now I have a question. How do you kill someone and you get charged with "Feloniously Pointing Firearm (Rss)" and only get 4 years in prison? Since when can pointing a gun kill someone? He was convicted on 05/27/2010 and his term ends on 10/15/2014. No wonder Jake England was p****d. However, that didn't give him the right to shoot innocent people.
Well, now Jake will have the chance to direct his anger to the person who is ACTUALLY RESPONSIBLE for his father's death as he'll join him in prison. Great resolution...
Well Dakota I would say to you that Mr. England and his daughter's boyfriend went to this Johnson characters' place looking for trouble and tragically found it. What they should have done was call the police.
And Mr. England,in the story as YOU have reported it,struck Mr. Johnson with a weapon,a stick,in his apartment. And then Mr. Johnson shot him. Hmmm,sounds to me like Mr. Johnson would have been walking away free as a bird had he been lucky enough to live in a state with a "Stand Your Ground" law at the time this happened. After all,a stick must be more dangerous than a bag of Skittles.
By the way...you aren't the first person I've seen reference this story as some sort of justification for his son and Mr. Watts to have gone out and,seemingly,shot 5 people down. Because the man who killed his father didn't get a stiff enough jail sentence for doing so.

Dear kennyw, we do have a "stand your ground law" in Oklahoma so there is something else wrong with this picture. Plus there is no report that they were in his apartment. Sounds like it was ruled self-defense.
The whole situation is extremely sad. North Tulsa has many beautiful areas but it is also the part of town where there are bars on the windows and multiple chains on the doors and sometimes that's not enough (just ask my Aunt who suffered numerous robberies before her sons convinced her to move). But before I get slammed I know the other areas of town I would be careful in and there are several spots. Turley, the town where the suspects was found, has long had the reputation as being a hardscrabble area (my father grew up there and I have cousins there now). I'm sure there are those who would be afraid to drive there. It's one of those towns that's slowly fading from memory as the old stores crumble to the ground. Tulsa Public Schools closed their life-line, their elementary. I predict Turley's complete engulfment by Tulsa within the next 25 years, another lost community.

This is horrible and I pray for all of those people's love ones that were shot. This guy had been through a lot and had serious problems. I do sympathize with him on the part of his father being killed and the guy only getting 5 years but that is the way it works. He and his friend will now have to pay the consequences for what they have done. I do wonder if all this hate by the new Black Panthers and Sharpton in Florida hit a nerve with him. I read about the case with his father being killed and his sister was married to a black man so I doubt he had hate just for blacks...probably just snapped.
