Mega Millions winner comes forward in Maryland

Jonathan Ernst / REUTERS

The winning Mega Millions ticket from Maryland was purchased at this 7-Eleven store in Baltimore County. The winner or winners will receive up to $218 million.

And the Mega Millions winner is …

Anonymous.

Again.

After more than a week of suspense, during which rumors swirled and one woman claimed to have misplaced her winning ticket, Maryland Lottery officials have confirmed that a winning ticket has been claimed and verified, WBAL-TV reported on its website. Lottery officials scheduled a press conference 8 a.m. Thursday, though it was unknown if the winner would appear.

The Maryland ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill in Baltimore County. The store will receive $100,000.

This does not settle whether the winner is the McDonald's employee who said she had won but misplaced the ticket.

The woman, Mirlande Wilson, a single mother of seven, had been tasked with guarding Mega Millions tickets from a work pool. After the Mega Millions numbers were announced, Wilson said she had the winning ticket but that she wouldn’t share the spoils – she said she had purchased the winning ticket apart from the group.

She held a news briefing last week, flanked by a lawyer, but then later said she had lost the ticket.

Woman who claims winning Mega Millions ticket refuses to produce it

There were three winning tickets for the largest jackpot in history, $656 million, which means each person or group will receive up to $218 million. The winners bought tickets in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.

The Kansas winner also chose to remain anonymous.  Winners may withhold their identity in Kansas and Maryland.

"This does not settle whether the winner is the McDonald's employee who said she had won but misplaced the ticket. "

Really? Did she quit her job? buy a new car? a new house? Give some more fake "interviews" trying to get her 15 minutes of fame for absolutely nothing?

Gee, I wonder if she won. (sarcasm)

Best explanation of what is
happening in America

The people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff have told the
people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the
free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist

The folks who are getting free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for
the free stuff,
because the folks who are paying for
the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free
stuff and their own stuff.

You folks are missing the point.

Here is the rest of the story:

  • McDonalds employees gave money to Ms/Mrs Wilson to purchase Mega Millions tickets.
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson purchased the tickets at the 7/11.
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson found out she had winning "ticket" but did not want to "share the winnings".
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson "hired" an attorney.
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson stated she "hid" the ticket at McDonalds.
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson later said she "lost" the ticket.
  • Ms/Mrs Wilson's attorney conveniently said she would not make any more media appearances and to leave her alone.
  • The attorney covertly "hired" someone to claim they had the winning ticket, and after "they" obtained the cash would provide Ms/Mrs Wilson and the Attorney a huge share of the winnings.

/END of Story/

It might be suggested that the Lottery Commission review all tapes at the "7/11" to determine who purchased the ticket. I am sure they had cameras up and running and verification should be simple enough. If the person who brings the ticket to the Lottery Commission is NOT the person on the camera, then all H*** will break loose at McDonalds and the Maryland Bar Association.

Seriously, I live in CA and if I had won a ticket I wouldn't come forward (In CA you have 6 months) until the last minute and I would have remained anonymous. Too many (including family) looking for handouts. I would share but on my terms and wouldn't want to be pressured. I give a lot to charity every year and would give even more. Too many around that would want, want, want.

This Ms. Wilson cannot be arrested on any charges---it was, or is one, big fat lie, along with her ethical? lawyer. Who is he? What kind of license does he have to Practice Law?

What did she want out of all the publicity?--Book signings, Tabloid stories, Media and public attention? She thought America was a "Free Enterprise"; making money off of she thought stupid people. This Haitian lying, woman should be sent back to Haiti, if it is not her Lottery Ticket.

Her lawyer is in cahoots with her, just in case she might have the winning ticket. He is a winner, too, because he got publicity for future unethical clients to represent. This lawyer is plain Stupid, as stupid as Ms. Wilson. He may be Disbarred?. Did he do anything wrong.

What a huge waste of time, and mystery for Americans. Someone will step forward, who definitely had to stop this crazy Tabloid Story---who knows, the person may have waited the full 6 months---it takes a lot of time to reorganize one's life with $108,000,000.00 dollars---Anonymous may stay Anonymous.

She, should return to Haiti; taking up space, time, probably using taxpayer Welfare and Government Programs; a bottom feeder.

Hope most Americans who followed this story were not one of the There is a Sucker Born Every Minute". Sucked into this pathological, greedy liar.

Wonder if she like Mc's hamburgers and fries anymore. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

But with her living conditions as we know it - working at McDonalds with 7 children, could she really afford to hire a lawyer if she had not won? And wouldn't the lawyer look into how he would be paid before he took on the job?

Unless she could really pull the wool over the lawyer's eyes (which I doubt, when it comes to his money) I am inclined to think she DID win.

Can still remain anonymous. Just prove to a judge real fast who they were if not her. And if it is her, start the lawsuits flying.

BTW...I agree with the people who don't want their names released. They won't get any peace, (think about how annoying telemarkers can be...) aside from that, the security issue...(alot of nutjobs out there.) ALL states should keep the names private.

I know nothing about you or wife, nor your disabilities. I do know that there are many so called disabled people out there that are perfectly able to make it on their own, without the taxpayers paying their way because they are poor victims of society. It is not my fault that you can't push your fat a$$ away from the dinner table or your wife is bi-polar. If you were born with a birth defect it wasn't I, that did the drugs or alcohol while pregnant nor was it I that had intercourse with your mother, that produced you. If you are a disabled Veteran, then by damn you are owed!

I wasn't calling disability a freebie but if you are one of the abusers then feel free to know that it was you I was speaking about.

About that, most disabilities are what people have done to themselves (drug & alcohol abuse and other over indulgence), away from the table, push push push that's all I have to say, About That.

about that...........

I am not sure who you think I was trying to attack, or rain on their disability parade, but maybe you have me confused with someone else, because if anything, I was speaking and sticking up for those individuals such as yourself against fools like, (Howdy Ho) there who was anticipating that if he ever did win the lottery, he would keep it a secrete until the very end for fear of being asked for some of it by even his family of all people and God forbid, put him on the spot before he had the chance to decide who deserved it or not. I mean, what kind of a selfish inconsiderate creep would be reluctant to share his fortune with his immediate family if he won that kind of money less it be on his terms and when? I will tell you what kind of a squeak when they walk control freak they are. The kind that would ask what they needed the money for and then in the attempt to maintain control of them and the situation and where the money would actually be going. Then would probably ask for a receipt or pay their bill for them. My guess he is also the type that if he did help somebody, he would throw it up to them and hold it over their head the rest of their life's. If he does give as much as he claims to charity, I bet he tracks every dime of it and probably demands a break down of where it goes. Those charitable organizations he says he gives a lot of money to, no doubt would rather he keep his donations, than to have to put up with his control issues and make no mistake about it, this want to be little general has a bunch of them. So, next time you may want to find out the whole story about that before you leap off the balcony with both teeth.

I would not be surprised if the bird brain from the McDonald's comes forward to try and claim this winner stole the ticket from her. I think the media should leave people alone when they request it. This case is the exception. I'd like to see Mirlande Wilson followed around for the next few months. As she continues her pathetic life, I'd like to see microphones in her face as she's asked why she needs to continue to work at a minimum wage job. She asked for it, and I'd like to see her get it. If she thinks the "that was my ticket" bullsh!t is going to get her anything, she's even more stupid than she has already shown herself to be.

My theory is this: that she indeed did buy a ticket from the same store the sold the real winner. That she assumed she won, and was too fearful or jealous to check her ticket because she couldn't handle the let down. So she just told everyone she won.

Its like the time I thought I had AIDS. I just told everyone I had it, because I was too afraid to look at the test results. By the time I did check, 3 of my former lovers had committed suicide for some reason. Oh well, I'm sure they would have been happy for me had they lived to hear the good news.

        #2.12 - Mon Apr 9, 2012 10:47 PM EDT

JS... it won't matter because legal winners are those who sign the back of the ticket. If she lost the ticket and didn't sign the back, she has no claim to it. The winner did the smart thing and remained anonymous, so this McDonalds employee or former employee won't be able to find the winner.

If that was the plan, why make those convoluted claims in the first place? If she is that devious, why not stay silent the whole time so that no one, including her co-workers, is put on alert?

I would split it with my fellow employee's. 10 million at just 1% interest is 100k a year and you can get better rates than that with big money. Plenty to live on without being a greedy @!$%#.

Hey! Not a bad gig at all indeed. Though it probably won't work, but then again, there are a lot of stupid criminals out there that think they can get away with almost anything. That is until they are caught in their own lair.

So, before anyone has the chance to come forward and claim their winnings and ownership of the ticket, she comes forward to set up the prelude to her claim stating that she is the winner only she has misplaced the ticket. That way when the real owner of the ticket does comes forth to claim their winnings, she steps in with her attorney and attempts to verify the fact that no it is mine, because she has already said so publicly and the one who is trying to claim her ticket, obviously must have found it. The only problem with that is the video camera at the convenient store doesn't lie. Who knows, the one that did win may feel sorry for her and kick her down a million so she can afford to get help with her mental illnesses she developed while work at McDonald's? Stranger things have happened don't you know!

According to earlier published reports, the time stamp on the store's video camera system is wrong. They can verify WHO was there, but not WHEN, unless there are other clues in the context of the video.

I don't like this anonymous winners, it smells like scam to me. I live in Vietnam and there are instances where the winners are made up so the lottery organization can take all the money.

I didn't even buy a ticket. Like I said, with big money like this, it is easy for people to tempt to do such thing.

I also state that I read about this in Vietnam, so it happened before. No name, it's the perfect scam.

While I don't think its out of the question for scams to occur, especially when such large sums of money are at stake. However, the scam comment caused me to realize there is a fundamental law of internet rooted here. That law is:

ILaw: Whenever any news story about any topic is posted, there will always be posts that claim or imply the main premise of the story is manufactured, altered or involves a conspiracy or coverup that is obvious to a reasonably intelligent person, such as themselves.

Not to take away from the real winner but does there not have to be some sort of formal inquiry by the employees from the McDonald's to make sure that the winner is not M(r)s. Wilson?

Otherwise, that is a perfect scheme...she buys the winning ticket with the group's money...she disappeared from the media last week claiming she lost the ticket, and now the winning ticket is claimed anonymously.

How do we know that the anonymous person is not M(r)s. Wilson trying to cheat all the McDonald's employees out of their legal claim to the winnings if she used the group money to buy the ticket? Legal precedent would say that if a group bought and won the lottery, that all have claim to a share of the money so they should make sure that it is not her.

What is strange is that the winner did not come out as the winner before she lost the ticket...makes you think.

It would be funny if the next news story was that the anonymous winner said they found the winning lottery ticket in a happy meal box from the McDonald's where M(r)s. Wilson worked...which would explain where she hid it and where she lost it...

If I were the winner, I wouldn't have come out until I had my attorney and financial advisors and good game plan. I also would want to be anonymous. No sense in showing the flys where to lay their eggs.

There was doubt that Wilson was the winner in the first place. It was a man on the store's video buying the winning ticket. Wilson was pulling the chain of her co-workers or wanted her moments of fame. If Wilson did win the ticket and she signed the back, there is not much the group can do.

Hey McDonald's employes, you got screwed. the ticket was bought with your money. She will lay low for awhile and then she will get her share from the person she is dealing with. Watch and see. It may take awhile before this happens. I believe the ticket was bought with the McD's employee's money. If I was one of the McD's employee's, I would watch her for a long time. It may be worth it.

...and being a single mother of seven is a badge of honor in your opinion? I wonder how many daddies there are, and I wonder how she "supplements" her McDonald's salary. Probably sucking at the public teat and government cheese as well. So, admire her while you and I help pay for her lifestyle!

My mom was a single mother of 8, with little work experience when my dad died. And we were all of the same mom and same dad. So before you throw your stones, you might want to check yourself. And no my mom didn't take government cheese. She worked 3 jobs and we never saw her except for when she was sitting in a chair sleeping. The fact that the woman was working should stiffle your ignorance but no you had to keep going to say she was probably doing both. And IMO, its not the people on "government cheese" we should be worried about, its the people on the government caviar, the elite, but noooooo everyone wants to fight amongst themselves over "cheese". Divided we fall.

Hmmmmmreally, Thank you so much for your comment. My (Black) Grandmother raised 9 kids on her own. My grandfather passed away in a freak factory accident. Yes she had government assistance, but not for very long. She also worked 3 jobs, when the kids were old enough they also helped with work. Because of this, my Father is the hardest working man I have ever met. He is an engineer for navy fighter jets. Because he grew up on this so called "government cheese" he helps to ensure your safety everyday.

I can't stand it when people sit on the sidelines and judge.

This bottom feeder had 7 kids out of wedlock knowing that she could get a nice fat check each month from US...the taxpayers...then when she decided that wasn't enough, she tried this scam and it blew up in her face!!! I have no sympathy for people like her. My sympathy and charity lies with families like yours. I live in Detroit, and I see the mooches and government leeches all day everyday, and its really hard to have any kind of empathy towards people like her.

no way this way you can find out if your husband or wife won & tried it happen in CA. lady won filed for divorce from husband, but a letter came from the ca. lotto office & she got caught, & it went to couart & the judge gave him all the money. it was not a big one just around 1 mil. Plus what if all of a sudden family of the lottos were the winners. just to keep everyone honest.

You can NOT use food stamps to purchase lottery tickets. It is a cash only sale!

subject: food stamps to buy lotto tickets

they wait inside the grocery store and approach shoppers and sell the food stamps for 50 cents on the dollar or whatever they can get. then they use the money to buy whatever they want. been going on for decades now

Most food stamps come on a debit card type of thing. Cannot sell food stamps like what you are talking about. I'm sure it can be done, just not how you described.

Thomaston, GA has stores that turn a blind eye to what is purchased with your EBT/food stamp card. Cigarettes, beer, lotto.

This sounds like a scheme the lawyer made up after she opened her mouth and realized she could claim the money anonymously.

                                    Sound like a good lawyer?

The winner will not be Mirlande Wilson or a McDonald's employee...I know that for a fact because the winner is a cousin to my daughter's best friend. Mirlande Wilson was lying from the beginning. It amazes me the web that some people weave for themselves for attention! Honesty and Integrity is not characteristics Mirlande Wilson has! Shame on her! She should have told the truth that she was probably playing an April Fool's Day joke on her coworkers that backfired on her when they (her coworkers) went to the media to say that they were ready to fight her over the winning ticket that that they believed was purchased from the "office pool" money.

Mirlande + 7 kids + YOU + a cousin + a friend + another cousin + the 3rd kids daddy + your cousin + the pastor + the "other daddy" + blah blah blah blah

All of that money................................ will simply pass from all y'alls hands into the bank accounts of very smart people. It is your destiny to be poor.

First 13dev...you are assuming that I am Haitian...Next, you are assuming that I am poor and Third, you are assuming that I am unmarried and have children by 3 different men and Fourth, you are assuming that I am now lying. Well let me tell you this...I am caucasian, I am married for 27 years and have four children by the same man. I also have two Bachelor Degrees in Marketing and Business Management and own a business and my husband is a Civil Engineer and has his own business. I am NOT related to the "real" winner nor do I personally know her; yet, as I stated, my daughter's best friend from college COUSIN (who is 26 or 27 years old) won the lottery in MD! I am not going to say anymore, as it is her right to keep her name anonymous if she so chooses to do. I have no angle other than to tell the truth and out LIARS and OPPORTUNISTS such as Mirlande Wilson!

How many times were people told to sign the ticket? if she did it and lost it then. .. . But otherwise finders keepers. The cynical side of my brain says she cut a deal with somebody, and she's screwing her McD's coworkers. The realistic side of my brain says it fits with her other issues.

                                        The winning numbers were:

                                        46 - 23 - 38 - 4 - 2 - (Mega Ball) 23

                                        I wonder if anyone had tickets with the numbers 45 - 22 - 37 - 3 -1 (Mega Ball) 22

                                        or 47 -24 - 39 -5 - 3 (Mega Ball) 24

How ironic to have bought a ticket where all the numbers were either one above or below the actual winning numbers.
