Shots fired at Sanford police car near Trayvon Martin slaying site

Sanford police say their marked patrol car was shot at several times while parked outside a Florida elementary school, near the gated community where Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.

Updated at 4:48 p.m. ET: Police in Sanford, Fla., say a marked patrol car was shot at several times Tuesday morning while parked near the gated community where teenager Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.

No one was inside the cruiser at the time of the 4:30 a.m. shooting, according to Seminole County Sheriff's Office deputies, NBC News affiliate WESH-TV in Orlando reported.

Several bullets damaged the car’s front windshield, a side door window and the hood, Sanford Police Sgt. David Morgenstern told msnbc.com.

"I don't know how many bullets were fired, but I can say that it was several. We're checking and looking into everything," Morgenstern said.

Morgenstern would not provide any other details.

The patrol car was parked outside Bentley Elementary School to deter tour buses from using the school’s property during the day and evening, according to Morgenstern.

Mich. teacher: I was fired over Trayvon Martin fundraiser

A Michigan school teacher says she was fired for helping students organize a fundraiser for the family of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teen fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer. WDIV-TV's Lauren Podell reports.

He said police stationed a patrol car at the school with the aim of helping students and teachers navigate through the increased traffic.  A number of tour buses have headed into the area to visit the shooting site, Morgenstern said.

"Apparently the buses are coming in to pay their respects to the Trayvon Martin memorial," Morgenstern said.

The elementary school is across the street from Retreat at Twin Lakes, the gated subdivision where the 17-year-old Martin was shot to death by George Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch volunteer, on Feb. 26. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense, telling police Martin attacked him. Martin, who was black, was unarmed. Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic, has not been charged.

uh oh, the natives are getting restless. I guess after shutting down half the city for the past 8 weeks along side of publically endorsing a bounty to murder this Zimmerman guy, we knew that sooner or later they'd start shooting at cops.

If you've ever been to Sanford, you'd know that this type of behavior definitely fits the bill.

The Black Codes were laws in the United States after the Civil War with the effect of limiting the basic human rights and civil liberties of blacks. Even though the U.S. constitution originally discriminated against blacks (as "other people"[1]) and both Northern and Southern states had passed discriminatory legislation from the early 19th century, the term Black Codes is used most often to refer to legislation passed by Southern states at the end of the Civil War to control the labor, migration and other activities of newly-freed slaves.

In Texas, the Eleventh Legislature produced these codes in 1866, right after the Civil War. The legislation reaffirmed the inferior position that slaves and free blacks had held in antebellum Texas and was intended to regulate black labor. The codes reflected the unwillingness of white Texans to accept blacks as equals and also their fears that freedmen would not work unless coerced. Thus the codes continued legal discrimination between whites and blacks. The legislature, when it amended the 1856 penal code, emphasized the continuing line between whites and blacks by defining all individuals with one-eighth or more black ancestry as persons of color, subject to special provisions in the law.[2]

The black codes were enacted immediately after the American Civil War. Though varying from state to state, they each endeavored to secure a steady supply of cheap labor, and continued to assume the inferiority of the freed slaves. The black codes had their roots in the slave codes that had formerly been in effect. The premise behind chattel slavery in America was that slaves were property, and, as such, they had few, if any, legal rights. The slave codes, in their many loosely-defined forms, were seen as effective tools against slave unrest, particularly as a hedge against uprisings and runaways. Enforcement of slave codes also varied, but corporal punishment was widely and harshly employed to great effect.[3]

Mackman, you know why "we don't even know what racism is"? Because our generation doesn't think like you old school bigots. If I talk about someone shooting at cops, I don't automatically mean black folk, like you do. I wasn't raised looking at color and never thought anything of it until I got older and heard you "old folk" putting it into my head as a reason for this or that. Guess what bud? You are a racist, I DO KNOW THAT. Now, you get back to me when you can get past color of skin

Here's something for you to read and ponder:

There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs. I am afraid that there is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public. -

In the event that the quote doesn't ring a bell with you, I would suggest you read some of the works of a famous black man. That individual is Booker T. Washington

anything from the 2000's?

so you are on here mad about something that happened almost 150 years ago?

Wow,

Stupid racist asshats are stupid and racist. Seriously? "Slavery ended over 150 years ago, what are you complaining about?" Doesn't grab you as idiotic?

How about, "Schools were integrated in the 1950s and 1960s, so there's no separate system anymore." Yeah, sounds about as full of @!$%# as it is.

Here's a gem, "You're perpetuating racism by complaining about racism. It isn't endemic, it isn't systemic, you're just pushing it to get a free ride." Yeah, because everything is just peaches and cream, and if you don't like cream, you're the REAL racist.

"Reverse racism is worse than racism ever was. Some black guy got my spot at college." Okay, so firstly, there's no such thing as reverse racism. Idiots. Secondly, don't even bother pointing at the 23 white people who got there on sports "scholarships", alumni relatives, or any other stupid things. It's clearly the 1 black guy's fault, and nevermind that he also got good enough scores to qualify for college, he must only be there because of Affirmative Action, amirite?

How about, "Hey, cops pulled me over, and I'm white." And I bet you had a much better chance of getting a warning instead of a ticket, or getting fined for that bag of weed rather than getting your ass hauled into jail. And let's not even break into the statistics of white defendents vs. minority defendents in terms of plea deals offered, chances of conviction, chances of being offered leniency in exchange for information, etc.

What about, "There's a black guy as president, racism is over, get over it." Yeah, he's had the warmest reception of any president, ever. Yep. No, don't listen to Fox or Rush or anyone on the right. Especially Orly Taitz. They don't know what they're talking about. And no, they're not racist, they sincerely believe he wasn't born in this country because they have foolproof evidence his birth certificate, announcement in the paper, social security registration, doctor's notes, etc. are all part of a massive conspiracy that was hatched sometime in 1970s to make a black man president. Because everyone knows black people aren't born here. Or brown people. They all come over the border. What do you mean that's racist? That's the truth!

You know, I don't know if Zimmerman is racist. Frankly, I don't really give two @!$%#s what that scumbag thinks. He's an idiot, that's for sure. What I am concerned about is the one guy who's sort of white claiming self defense, not having any evidence to back up the claim (where are the bruises and scrapes if there was a fight?), and the cops just letting him walk away. Do you think a darker person, whether latino or black, would get away with that @!$%#? "Self defense? Right. You were probably going to get jumped into a gang, weren't you? Yeah, we know you were. Get in the car."

Oh, and kudos for showing just how endemic racism is in our culture. Way to claim "not racist" first. Racists.

this is why the prosecutor will not take the case to the grand jury, she knows they will not indite; and she is fearful of a full blown race riot; instead she will charge him directly , Manslaughter at the most, and continue the case for a long time until the rage calms down; she is a pro, she has seen all the evidence, she knows that getting a conviction is almost impossible, best she can hope for is a hung jury.

Maybe the car was shot because it was wearing a hood ie .. get it? a Hood ie ... yeah that's a pretty sad comment but ya know what, I am tired of someone always yelling racism. Maybe Ruken, maybe the white people are getting tired of the crap ... remember the civil rights movement? It was supposed to be about ALL people being equal, not blacks getting whatever they want whenever they want and hollering racism at every opportunity.

Tell me .. when is White history month?
Who won the Ms. White America contest
How do I contribute to the white college fund or the NAAWP?
I can't wait for this year's white music awards ....
I hope know my child will go to the college of her choice because they're going to lower the test standard to get more white students to qualify ...
Oh wait -- all that would be racist and Ringmaster Al would protest ... but it's all ok for the good folks of the black community ....
The race card is played out -- this is a tragedy -- a kid was killed and it may or very well may not have been self defence -- THAT is a tragedy let YOUR BS racist card go --- THAT is why the quest for equality suffers ... you can't be equal but want special treatment

It's unbeleiveable how much time, anger, hatred, bigotry and racism has be invested by so many for one case. You'd think this death was the only one in the entire state of FL.

It makes no sense to me that so may find it so easy to defame Zimmerman and his family and to call for such vigilante retaliation such as send him to the gallows, shoot him, send him to the gas chamber, give him the needle, anyone that supports getting the facts and having a trial first is a racist and on and on!!!

Geez, Florida is full of drug dealers, rapists, child molestors, ID thieves, home invaders, bank robbers and one hell of alot of GANG BANGERS. Yet there are few stories about that and when there is comparatively little is said or done out it I fid it a crying shame that so many other cases go unnoted. RAce baiters, bigots, liars and down right crazies coming out of the woodwork trying to get their 15 mins. of fame off the back of one man. Stories with 2500-8000+ comments about TM/GZ while other stories about FL crime virtually get no conversation about them!!! It's scary how many have truly gone off the deep end trying to hate this one man.

Most people are not asking for blood, they just want an arrest until all of the facts are in. To be honest in most states there would have been an arrest, then bail and so on.

Not sure why everyone is not releasing their findings.........they may be worried that what they have to say will not go over very well. They have had plenty of time to speak to all involved, the witnesses, forensics, audio etc.. Who knows what they will say............time (eventually) will tell.

The Sanford Police brought this mess to their doorstep when they let a murderer go free. There are a lot of people who are upset about the killing of an innocent teen in Florida and the recent killing of innocent people in Tulsa, OK. These stand your ground laws did not create these killings, bigots with guns created these killings. The only way to address these killings is to bring the murderers to trial, which will show the general public that police officers can be trusted to protect all of our citizens, not just the whack jobs with guns and a heart full of hate.

they let a murderer go free.

Who was that? If you are referring to Zimmerman, he was let go because he wasn't even a suspect based on the information available at the time. Since the incident, more information may have changed the opinion of those responsible for the bringing of charges or not. While the investigation is ongoing he is only a suspect: but so is martin since there is evidence supporting counter claims. Even if charges are brought he is only an accused. He is not a murderer unless and until he is convicted.

There is just something about people wanting to be treated as equals by being given special treatments that annoys me. Having the legal system work equally doesn't mean that he is "convicted" before he is tried, let alone investigated.

you have to have enough evidence to go to trial and support the charges. I know you may not like it but that is how the judicial system works unlike the media and general public who seem to have the ability to try and convict on a moment's notice.

I'm sure the shooters will just say they "felt threatened and defended themselfs" which passes for law in Florida these days....

Rob...why even bother with your stupid comment. "Felt threatened and defended themselfs" against an unattended police car?? Just because you're mad that this media circus of a case MAY just be exactly what it has always said to have been a case of self-defense doesn't give anyone the right to shoot up a police car

The problem is that we have poor leaders at the frontline. Sharpton and Jackson are only getting their "time in". Police chief has no credibility. Obama hasn't said too much. Zimmerman attorneys are acting like he is the victim here when he disregarded what 911 told him to do which then put him in this situation. No one is standing up and saying "Calm down people and let's wait to hear what the investigation turns out". Instead they are all hyping up everybody and getting everyone pissed off when no one knows for sure what happened that day.

Well, except for Terry above. He knows because he has that special news channel that tells him the truth. Kind of like that news agency in Iran.

Obama staff most likely made a call to get Sharpton and Jackson down there. It is election year. Remember he can't run on his record so plan B he is a community organizer at heart.

Why does everyone say he disregarded what dispatch told him?? They told him "Um we don't need you to do that" he says "ok" and the wind noise stops and his breath returns to normal which suggests he did listen and stopped running after the kid. And he says that he has no idea where he is. So those of you who suggest he didn't listen, wrong. Chased him down and killed him in cold blood, wrong..

so what are people who support the Trayvon For Justice group going to do if an investigation finds that he did attack Zimmerman?

Of course *facepalm* cover up! There is no way for this to end nicely. People are to embroiled into the fact that Trayvon could do no wrong. That in itself is a wrong train of thought, he was a teen. Regardless of race, they can cause trouble, I think we all caused trouble at some point as teenagers (or at least us normal ones :P)

But seriously, can't we let the multiple investigations going on run their course before we start screaming? The law is to blame for letting Zimmerman stay out of jail. Protest the law and THEN protest law enforcement for poor investigation if they find Zimmerman was at fault.

There's no way any of us on this site know what happened. All we've all heard is second hand reports and sketchy stories from media outlets looking to make a buck.

The only place we'll hear a full story is at trial. However, if he isn't arrested, there can be no trial. Keep in mind, you cannot be arrested without probable cause. Therefore, if Zimmerman isn't arrested, and no corruption is found in the PD, we have to assume he isn't legally guilty of any wrongdoing.

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, not this media circus.

oh I absolutely agree. I'm just curious that IF they find Trayvon actually did attack zimmerman, what these people are going to do who are protesting for his justice. Is it just going to die out or are people going to be screaming cover up or corrupt PD. Either way, at this point, the race card has played out in the media to the point where there is no way for Zimmerman to come out unscathed if he's found innocent (assuming an arrest in the future is made).

That's already covered. Trayvon supporters have already been saying that since day 1.

Either way this goes, Zimmerman is screwed. There are always going to be those that are convinced it was all his fault, even if he is found totally innocent of any wrongdoing. If he is found not guilty or not charged, the Sanford police are going to be called every name in the book. If he is found guilty of any sort of crime in this case, someone is going to "take care of it" in prison.

This could get really ugly, really quick. There is a lot of pent up anger over the lack of charges being filed. It will soon come to a head and several people will be injured or even killed. We are a country of laws and it appears that the law applies to some and not to others. There must be justice for all or there will be justice for none, and if it is for none, then there will be blood in the streets.

Evenstar, I feel you are correct. Way too much anger, and no patience to let the investigation be competely done. What do you think will happen if Zimmerman ever goes before the court, and the court finds him innocent?

There is no good outcome for this mess, and I'm glad I don't live around there. Like you said, it could get real ugly very fast.

I fear this is only going to escalate and many innocent people are going to be hurt or killed in this madness. Shooting police vehicles isn't going to change what has happened and only adds to tensions. What is going to happen if no charges are brought? What if he is brought to trial and is acquitted? The acquittal is a real possibility the way the law is written; it was meant to give more power to the shooter.

I would have to partially agree with you.

I don't think it's a matter of his having chosen sides so much as he passed up an opportunity to ask for everyone to remain calm and wait for an official verdict by way of the various federal and state investigations that are taking place. Instead, one could certainly view his comments as taking sides in the case and I think that was a mistake on his part.

Well, I guess if the black's own people didn't trade their tribesman to the white man for goods in the first place this would never have been a problem. Might as well get it right if you keep playing the race card here. Their own people started it, but it's funny how that fact always gets pushed under the rug...... ugghhhhh.

This is a tragic case and honestly shouldn't have happened. How is it ok for the mental idiot driving around with a gun in the first place? Also, who elected him to be part of the "watch group"? The guy has a few screws loose and it amazes me that he hasn't been in more trouble then he has been in already. Look at that guys past, he's an oddball.

Although at times I get tired of the poor me excuse I can totally understand it and hopefully one day we can all get past it. Seriously, I am sure many on here remember the crap that went down after Rodney King. I remember myself and my neighbors staying in our homes with rifles at the ready and if we did have to go to the store we sure as hell had backup with us. I lived in Cali at the time and I can honestly say it was an effin scary time. I am selfishly happy that I won't have to deal with that again should it come to pass. I am hoping it does not happen.

This has always been about justice. The sad news is that, these days in our society, we have to have a mob outrage before justice is sought. If any of your family member ever gets shot I'm sure you would like a more than 7 hours of investigation before the case is closed. The police seem more guilty here than the trigger man: they failed to treat it as a crime scene, contaminated almost all the evidence, drug-tested the victim rather than the shooter, ignored witness and wrote a poor police report. The incident occurred around 7 pm; they had the victim's phone and he had a bottle of ice tea and skittles. Any one would conclude that he was coming from the store and heading somewhere of familiarity. knocking on residents' doors would have helped. It would have taken any jr. High student less than 30 minutes to identify the victim; the police took days and their defense has been cheeky and dirty.

It's un call for to shoot at police cars and that person should be sought and charge appropriately. But it could also be staged by the local police to draw away critisim.

That is a war nobody would win but then that is often the case. Lots of military in my family and I have yet to know someone who had been there who felt war was a good thing. Occasionally unavoidably but never good. More is always lost than is won.

If the shooter was black it is freedom of speech. If the shooter is black and arrested, then Jackson and Sharpton will start a protest. It then it would be a racist arrest. If the shooter is any other race then the shooter would be arrested and end of story.
