Subscribe to RSSHours after Florida Special Prosecutor Angela Corey announced that George Zimmerman had been charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, Martin's parents told NBC's Brian Williams that Zimmerman's arrest helps fulfill their goal of bringing their son's shooter to justice.
Updated at 7:09 a.m. ET: George Zimmerman is in custody in Florida and will be charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, authorities announced Wednesday. His attorney said he would plead not guilty.
"We did not come to this decision lightly," Angela Corey, the special prosecutor appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to re-examine the case, said at a news conference in Jacksonville.

Corey had previously said she wouldn't present the case to a grand jury, which took first-degree murder off the table. Second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara — who took the case late Wednesday after Zimmerman's previous attorneys withdrew — said Zimmerman would plead not guilty and that he would seek Zimmerman's release on bond. Zimmerman was scheduled for an initial hearing Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

"I think he's troubled by the fact the state decided to charge him," O'Mara said. "I would think anyone charged with second-degree murder would be scared."
Corey said she decided last week to seek the charge but needed several days to make sure all details were in order. She said she had informed Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton.
'A heart has no color'
In a brief statement in Washington at a news conference at a gathering of the National Action Network, Fulton said: "We just wanted an arrest, and we got it, and I say thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus."
"I just want to speak from my heart to your heart, because a heart has no color. It’s not black, it’s not white. It’s red. And I want to say thank you from my heart to your heart," Fulton added, according to NBC News.
Trayvon Martin's mom: I believe killing was an 'accident'

“I think they decided to review it based on public pressure," Sharpton said, according to NBC Miami. "Had there not been pressure there would not have been a second look."
“Tonight maybe America can come together and say only the facts should matter when you’re dealing with a loss of life," he added. "This is not a night for celebration. This is a night that should not have happened in the first place."
On NBC's Rock Center Wednesday evening, Fulton said that she found Corey professional.
"I believe there is a human side to her," she said. "I believe she looked at the evidence, spoke with the witnesses and determined what (Zimmerman) should be charged with."

Ben Crump, the attorney for Martin's parents, said the decision was about "justice, justice and only justice." He said it was important that Zimmerman have a fair trial, even though "we believe in our hearts that he was wrong to kill Trayvon Martin."
Corey refused to discuss details of the case, saying she was committed to protecting the interests of both Martin and Zimmerman.
"So much information on this case has gotten released that should never have been released," she said.
Zimmerman, 28, arrived in a police caravan at the Seminole County jail about 8:20 p.m. ET. Under Florida law, he must be taken before a judge within 24 hours of his return to the county, where he has acknowledged he shot and killed Martin, 17, in the town of Sanford on Feb. 26. Corey wouldn't say where he was being held to protect his safety.
Scott, who appointed Corey after Seminole County authorities declined to bring charges, said in a statement that the matter "is now in the hands of the judicial system and I am confident justice will prevail."
Attorney doubts fair trial
Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Peruvian, says he shot Martin, who was black, in self-defense after following him in a gated community in Sanford. Police questioned Zimmerman but decided against pressing charges.
The lack of an arrest or charges had sparked protests nationwide, with critics alleging that Zimmerman confronted Martin because of his race. Zimmerman's supporters deny that.
Trayvon Martin's parents say they're thankful there was an arrest but that 'this is just the beginning.' NBC's Ron Allen reports.
The decision whether to arrest Zimmerman was delayed for several weeks because Zimmerman had indicated that he would argue self-defense under Florida's so-called Stand Your Ground law, which shields subjects from prosecution if a judge determines that the shooting was justified to protect life or property.
Corey called the law "a tough affirmative defense to overcome," but she said, "If 'Stand Your Ground' becomes an issue, we will fight that affirmative defense."
O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, told reporters that he didn't think Zimmerman could get a fair hearing "today" because "the emotions are just running high in Central Florida."
"I am hoping the hatred settles down," he said.
A federal civil rights investigation is also under way, but U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that the Justice Department had to meet a "high bar" to bring any charges.
The main federal role is to "support the state in its ongoing investigation," Holder told reporters Wednesday morning in Washington. At the same time, he said, the Justice Department is conducting its "own thorough and parallel investigation" to try to resolve the case "in as fair and complete a way and as quickly as we can."

If is as i read in one of the stories, he was told by the 911 operator not to follow the subject, yet he went against what they told him and jumped this boy. in the pictures that i have seen of both males, George was possibly taller and a lot heavier than Treyvon, there is no way Treyvon could attack this man and hurt him unless he was in fear of his life.
since he didn't heed the 911 operator and leave him alone, then George needs to pay the consequences of his actions. For every action, there is a reaction. I am sorry for both families, and wish that the hands of time could turn back for them both, but that cannot happen.
It is time for this nation to stop complaining everytime something like this happens and turn this into something good. If this nation is going to call itself a God-loving, God-fearing Christian nation, then it is time that we started acting like it. We condemn everything and can never find the good in people. We need to start living what we say we are. There are a lot of people in this country that are suffering b ecause the only time we do anything to help, is when we are trying to make ourselves look good to other people in other nations.

That's what will be discussed in court, not what happened in the past for either Trayvon or Zimmerman. So, If that is you in the picture, then keep to flaunting the goodies and leave the important stuff to those that have a brain.
There are recordings of both Martin's voice and Zimmerman's voice. Let the expert analysis of who cried for help begin!

On CHICAGO's south side the ENGLEWOOD residents and some of their preachers and pastors and other "community leaders" had a protest that a WHITE gang crimes specialist Officer was assigned to a new position to oversee a crackdown on gang activities they weren't upset that he wasn't qualified they stated that it was because he was "WHITE" and that the police department didn't search for a black officer to fill the spot. JUST ONE OF MY MANY TRUE STORIES;
I was driving my 1967 Camaro convertible south down Austin Ave (the dividing line between Chicago and the town of Oak Park in Illinois) there was parking on the side of the street with 1 lane of traffic for north bound and 1 traffic lane for south bound traffic. A black woman parked on the side of the road neither signals or checks for traffic and makes an illegal u-turn, when she did this she was about 10 feet in front of me I am the traffic lane and I have the right of way, I go into oncoming traffic lane (thank God there was no oncoming traffic within 1 block of us) to try to avoid her but she just keeps coming and wipes out the whole side of my car from the front wheel all the way to my tail light. By the time Two WHITE Oak Park cops respond to the call there are 20 blacks surrounding my car screaming and yelling Honkey and you white MF we're going to kick your Ass and we're going to kill you, among other threats. When the Cops come I get out of my car and tell them what happened and that she was parked, gave no turn signal and failed to yield right of way, the BLACK woman says that she didn't see me then that I was going to fast which was a lie. All the blacks (most of who came out of their apartments when they heard the noise) were saying its that white boys fault he hit her. the cops looked at her drivers license and took mine. The croud of blacks were still saying spewing their racist accusations and threats although with the cops there they were less loud and a less threatening. Well the cops WRITE me only me a ticket on the spot and shows it to the crowd as he hands it to me. He then tells me to meet them at the police station and they immediately leave. As I stood outside of my car several blacks started coming closer to me so I reach over the open top and grab a tire iron from under the seat which I had picked up a day earlier from my brother who needed to use it. As they were still breathing their threats I swung it toward those closest to me and said I may go down but I will sure as hell going to take many of you down with me. The crowd dispersed except for about 7 or 8 guys who kept talking BS. I jumped over my door and took off toward the OPPD this time I was speeding and I was pissed-off. At the station the cops told me that they didn't want TO START A RIOT so they wrote me the ticket and since they couldn't just cancel it once it was written I would have to go to court. At court when I was called the judge said "I understand there were extenuating circumstances with the writing of the ticket" and he said "charges are dismissed". I said excuse me your honor but I thought the police are supposed to serve and protect and they just let me there with a mob of blacks screaming that they're going to kill me. The judge said" I understand the extenuating circumstances, case dismissed." I said "the whole side of my car is destroyed how am I supposed to get it fixed?" the judge replied "you will have to settle that in civil court, good day Mr — — — _. The cops didn't have her information to give me so I had to spend the $2,500 to fix my car myself. So much for: TO SERVE AND PROTECT.

Gracie, you are talking about a case that happened a little over a weak ago, not over a month ago. AND, that case is being investigated, unlike the Zimmerman one that was being swept under the rug. Apple, meat an orange!

Zimmerman is charged with 2nd degree murder. He needs to turn himself in now. There is no one that can help him unless he is in custody.

Second degree murder requires that the prosecution be able to show intent to kill with malice. They won't be able to prove that. T-Rex is right...they should have charged him with manslaughter. Then they might have had a chance at some jail time for Zimmerman. As it stands, they won't be able to get a conviction unless the jury nullifies.
why are so many racist white folks on here, crying that Zimmerman will not get a free trial or that he has been tried already? Have they just freakin' forgot about the Martin kid that was murdered? It would seem that: he was the one who did not get a fair trial. He was falsely accused by Zimmerman, then, he was tracked down like a felon by Zimmerman, and at last he was attacked and executed by Zimmerman. Don't you understand, Maximus54? Zimmerman will almost certainly go free now because there is no way the prosecution will be able to prove a 2nd-degree murder charge. If anything (and not having seen all of the evidence, I'm saying IF), they should have gone for a manslaughter charge. A 2nd-degree charge requires that they be able to prove that he intentionally killed Trayvon with malice in his heart. They won't be able to prove that, so Zimmerman will go free, unless he gets unlucky enough to have jury nullification. This is not good news for those who want Zimmerman behind bars.
