The family and supporters of Trayvon Martin expressed relief and gratitude with Florida State Attorney Angela Corey's announcement that she will pursue a second-degree murder charge against George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who fatally shot the unarmed teen.
"We just wanted an arrest, and we got it, and I say thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus," said Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton.
The announcement, and news that Zimmerman was in police custody, came more than six weeks after Trayvon’s death on Feb. 26. Since then, there have been protests across the country and furious debate about race, justice and self-defense.
Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, also thanked supporters, including the thousands of people who took to the streets to draw attention to his son’s case.
"This is just a beginning," he said. "We will continue the walk by faith, we will continue to hold hands on this journey — white, black, Hispanic, Latino. We will continue to walk. We will march and march and march until the right thing is done."
'Charged is not convicted'
The buzz on social media suggested that the decision to charge Zimmerman was a legal milestone, but that the case will remain the focus of intense attention.
Many postings were from supporters of the Martin family. They expressed relief as well as lingering anger about the length of time it took to get to Corey's announcement.
Others said they worried about whether Zimmerman could get a fair trial.
"Zimmerman is now, finally, in custody. Day 44," tweeted Kayla Ciara. "There’s finally justice for #TrayvonMartin#BoutTime."
"First he was not arrested for over 40 days, then he is given a lenient charge, why do I have a bad feeling that this is being set up to cause anger," reader Abiola Jomilogu posted on msnbc.com US News Facebook page.
"Lets remember being charged is not being convicted and sentence don't think the job is done still need justice #TrayvonMartin, wrote Tapmoney.
"Justice has been served on this 11th day of April. RIP #trayvonmartin. Your last cries still haunt us all as a wake up call why we must VOTE!" posted Miss Disilgold.com
"Well done, Florida. You got there in the end #trayvonmartin," Nick Hall posted.
From Bart Orr was this comment: "2nd degree murder? I'm tryna figure what happened to the 1st degree!! #TrayvonMartin."
But there were others who expressed apprehension about whether Zimmerman would be treated fairly in the courts, given the amount of publicity and emotion the case has generated.
"If #GeorgeZimmerman is acquitted will the race hustlers using #trayvonmartin be satisfied? Obviously not," wrote RadicalCenter.
After the press conference announcing George Zimmerman was in custody and would face a second-degree murder charge, Trayvon Martin's parents spoke to reporters, saying they were thankful that there was an arrest, and that 'this is just the beginning.' NBC's Ron Allen reports.
"Another media circus trial coming to the Central Florida area soon... #TrayvonMartin#GeorgeZimmerman," lamented Marty Robinson @martygreer15s.
"Seems like a witch hunt...if they have a law regarding what happend then why are they trying to put this guy on trial....because the same public that voted for that law now wants to convict a guy that it applies to ???" wrote Gene Towner.
Zimmerman initially told police that he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense because Martin attacked him. Police questioned him at the police station but no charges were filed.
Trayvon’s parents believe the 911 calls and other evidence disprove Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense.
Their calls for justice have sparked protests, furious debates about race and self-defense, petitions with hundreds of thousands of signatures calling for Zimmerman’s arrest, and an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
The police chief in Sanford, where Martin was killed, stepped aside amid accusations that the department bungled in its handling of the case. The special prosecutor was brought in to investigate weeks after the shooting.
A lot of information 'premature and inappropriate'
"This matter is now in the hands of the judicial system and I am confident justice will prevail. As the process continues, it is critical that we be patient and allow the proceedings to move forward in a fair and transparent manner," said Florida Gov. Rick Scott in a statement issued after Corey’s announcement. "I thank State Attorney Angela Corey for her diligence in conducting a thorough investigation. We will all continue to look for answers to the Trayvon Martin tragedy."
Zimmerman turned himself in to police on Wednesday, according to his newly hired attorney Mark O’Mara, who told the press that his client will plead not guilty in Martin's death.
At a news conference outside his office, O'Mara told reporters that Zimmerman voluntarily surrendered to Florida authorities, and that authorities were moving him to custody in Seminole County.
"He's concerned about getting a fair trial and a fair presentation," O'Mara said. "There's obviously been a lot of information flowing. I think a lot of it has been premature and inappropriate."
"The worst thing that can happen in this case is that it doesn't get tried properly," O'Mara said. "Give us our chance to do it the way it's supposed to be done."

Also since Feb 26, 2012 there were over 300 others killed in the USA...not a word about them in the news.

I'm glad a decision was made, now we don't have to hear anything from those a-hole "reverends" or candy-asses that call themselves the black panthers until something else happens that can shine the spotlight on them instead of the actual issues. From cover to cover this whole story sucked and was tragic on multiple levels and not just because of the shooting but because of the circus that ensued. It shows how pathetic and divided our nation has become. We're moving backwards at light speed.

You can't compare this killing to any other killing because of one inconvenient detail ...George Zimmerman's father used his influence to get the DA to overturn the lead investigator's recommendation of an arrest.
To defend George Zimmerman is to defend the apparent corruption of the SPD.
Tell me, if your son or daughter was gunned down and the shooter was allowed to walk without due proces for your child, would you be upset? Would you not have questions or would you just believe the gunman's story?
Too bad the medics cleaned up GM's injuries. Without due process, there is no way for the court to determine whether the blood on GM's nose or back of his head was his, or if it was Trayavon's blood. A witness saw GM with his hands on TM's back...what stopped him from smearing TM's blood on himself and claiming it as his own? That could've been confirmed by DNA testing...
...otherwise, how easy would it be to shoot and kill someone I don't like; scratch my face and pistol-whip myself then smear dead person's blood all over my face and head, and claim self defense?

While I'm pleased that the beginning of this process has begun by charging GZ, I do think that the media has played upon the fears and racism in this nation. I do not believe everything that has been printed, I'm not that stupid--everybody put their own spin on it. As terrible as it is that a young person (any color) was gunned down and killed, the judicial system is still a finkle institution. NO! Trayvon did not deserve to be killed but where in this country is GZ going to find an "impartial" jury?
I must admit that the stories about GZ-his behavior, attorney(s), statements, calling Hannity (FOX)-all sound shady to me. He "acts" like a scared GUILTY man trying to sway public opinion.

Jesus had nothing to do with this, Dr. King would be ashamed of the behavior of many of the black leaders in this case and the state of Florida was bullied into this. Zimmerman should have been arrested the day this took place and due process should have been applied and not done so by force of the media or racially motivated groups that have no concern for justice, but for attention. Where were these "leaders" when Five Blacks in Knoxville, TN. brutally raped and murdered a young white couple Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, or the 13 year old white boy in kansas city is set on fire by black teens yelling at him ‘This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve white boy.’ ...yeah, whites are the only racists...

the biggest challenge in this case will be finding an unbiased jury. but then again the same thing was thought about casey anthony, and she got off.

The Lord is very busy. On the night of Trayvon's death he may have had multiple sports events where he was charged with protecting players, combatants, and deciding winners. If it was a NASCAR race night, he was called on to do even more. These are scheduled events and unscheduled happenings are sometimes difficult to work in as they pop up unexpectedly. At least that's what I think anyway.
Imagine if Zimmerman is exonerated and comes out of the court room and says, "I turned this whole trial over to the Lord and he guided it to the truth." Do you suppose the black community would accept the Lord's will? I doubt it.

First, there is a little matter of due process,....a fair trial.
We all know "the drill"; By thanking and invoking the name of Jesus excessively and dropping the word justice,...and appearing to pray,....and dressing in a very respectable way,....and appearing as a family....and a community,.....the Sharpton-esque community tries to effectively bypass the question of whether their beliefs and desires about a given subject are CORRECT,...or accurate.
If I thank Jesus for an "arress",...saying that's "all" we wanted,....it's as if to say that these poor, simple God fearing family people,....finally (FINALLY) got justice,.....without discussing the subject of what is TRULY just.
If Zimmerman is guilty,...fine, but if he is not,...he is not.
We need a trial first. Thanking "THE LORD", and putting on airs of piety and faith is a device. Lawyers even advise people to do things like this that move public opinion in their favor.
The whole Sharpton march, outcry thing has become a predictable mechanism which,...it might be argued,...has - AT TIMES - had an undue amount of influence in some situations.
We all need to be clear about when it is called for,...and when it is just "effective".
I definitely feel for Martin's family, but I don't think that just because they unite, posture and pray,...the black community is ALWAYS 100% right .
I have no greater interest in seeing either side win. I don't know these people. I think it would be best if justice was served. I just take exception with the way the game is played by the court of public opinion.
Give Zimmerman a fair non-influenced, unbiased trial.

The majority of young black men in this country are killed by other black men and yet this is what it takes to get the country up in arms about a young life taken too early? There should be protests daily for the lives destroyed, families torn apart and neighborhoods living in fear from the gangs, drugs and violence that plague some of our cities. I would want an arrest but God as my witness if sharpton or jackson showed up to "speak on my family's behalf" there would be a physical attack on national TV. Those two pieces of garbage would experience a beat down like they'd never known and I'd help bring a nice bright spotlight on them just like they enjoy. I can honestly say that it is about time cause if the rolls were reversed and Trayvon had been the one with the gun he would have been beaten on his way to the jail and not only would he had been arrested but he would have been have not been given the opportunity to defend his actions as Zimmerman has been given....I beleive that justice will be served and they wil get rid of that stupid law about stand your ground ...Maybe Trayvon was standing his ground as well.....He did not deserve to be killed and someone has got to be held accountable for it...Let the gavel fall for justice.....

Hmmmm, a 17 year old walking around a gated community, who he was not a resident of, with a gun? Facts aside, which probably don't matter to you anyway, that it is illegal for a 17 year old to conceal carry in FL, and if Trayvon had been on the phone with 911 and waited for the police to arrive I highly doubt that he would have been beaten. He would more than likely have been taken to the police station and interviewed and charged with carrying a concealed weapon. I know it's comforting for you to believe in your scenario so you can remain self righteously justified in your belief that this was a racial thing. Let go of your bitterness and your demand for eye for an eye justice. You'll feel better.
Mike277- we've had 33 homocides in my city so far this year; last year we had over 100. None of these murders received national attention either. This case is being popularized by the media and kept alive with headlines like this article- Trayvon's parents say 'Thank you Lord' for Zimmerman's arrest. Instead of being newsworthy it's just propaganda stoking the fires that the media set over what is otherwise a local incident- not a racial crime that speaks to every man, woman & child in the US. It's also a handy distraction from other pressing national issues we are facing today.

Trayvon's mother should get her story straight. Here she is quoted saying all she wanted was an arrest. Other public statements say she wanted a conviction. She wants justice? No way. She wants payback. She might as well say she wants a lynching and/or kangaroo court.
Amazing to me that no network has the stones to show the REAL KID at 17, You just wait an see if Zimmerman is aquited they'll find ways to show their dissatisfaction with the legal sysytem.
The only reason they arrested him was to keep blacks from tearing up their own neighborhoods!
Everyone - whether you support Zimmerman or not - should be happy about this result. Of course those who support the Martin family should be happy, because the man who killed their son - no allegedly about it, he admitted to doing it - will finally be brought to trial. But Zimmerman's supporters should be equally happy, because now, finally, Zimmerman will have a chance to produce his case. He says it was an open and shut case of self-defense - now we get to see.

I dont recall seeing anything on Trayvon's twitter comments, nor any comments that were honest from people that knew him (other than his parents who of course say he was their "little angel" ,,, because they didnt have to parent of course). I agree he never should have been carrying while on neighborhood watch but if you truly think that trayvon was "just walking by minding his own business" then you should probably stay in the basement and believe everything you see on television because if you do the research then you will see that that "little angel" was not so much a little angel. You also may want to look up the term stalking and read the definition as well.

Scrolling down through the comments here, I'm disheartened by the vehemence & vitriol... I support "Stand Your Ground" legislation, but this case just has smelled wrong from the outset. Basically, NO ONE (except George Z) really knows what happened that night. Not charging him, and letting the justice system do its job was sheer lunacy, and has contributed to the outrage, rather than avoided it.
To my knowledge, GZ's brand-new lawyer hasn't even filed a motion for discovery yet, so even HE hasn't a clue what went down... Yet almost all of the comment's I've read (until your's) express very strong opinions, indeed. Don't know if I believe Zimmerman's version of events - but I'm not tying a noose knot yet either.
The writing was on the wall for this guy since day one. It would have been the best decision of Zimmerman's life if he got the hell out of the country and disappeared for the rest of his life. Guilty of murder or not, he will never get a fair trial, and probably won't even live to see a trial.
Will the prosecution label Zimmerman as white? Will they play the 911 tape NBC altered or the real one? Will they show the 6'2" football player or the old pic when trayvon was 12?

Vigilante justice is what Treyvons parents want. They are no different then the law that killed their son. The procecutor will have to prove her case and we will see what happens. I have said all along you are innocent until proven guilty. I find it hard to convict with this law of Florida's on the books. Like I said before he should have been told to stay at home after being expelled from school and this whole mess could have been avoided. Have any of you ever heard of child abuse??? Well this is a good example of that. His parents were not being parents, by letting him go out that night. Disclipine is a good thing when a child is out of control...
Letting him go out that night? So because he was suspended - not expelled - it was wrong of him to be out at 7PM which is when he was shot? He deserved to get shot because he shouldn't have been out that evening going to the store?? By the way he was going to the store to get candy for his little brother who asked him to go get it for him...I swear some of you guys have no compassion.
Let some grown man follow and shoot your unarmed child and see how you take it...see if you just take him at his word that it was self defense even though it was the grown man who admitted to the 911 dispatch that he was following him. Even if Trayvon was beating his ass - and I hope to God he was - you can't follow and confront someone you think is suspicious (saying "these @!$%#s always get away" shows that he had at least some malice towards Trayvon before the confrontation) basically picking a fight and then shooting them when you realize you are losing that fight (and as much as I wish it were the case, I doubt Trayvon was winning - although he was a tall kid he was skinny at 140-150 pounds). I don't know the events of that night - none of us do. We know the basic facts which are that Zimmerman was following and ended up shooting and killing an unarmed teenager who was committing no crime - who was only walking home. If it was in fact self defense then let him prove it in court.

The power the media, like MSNBC, has to create news and controversy is amazing. We had three controversial news stories taking place at the about same time: SCOTUS consideration of the Healthcare bill; Obama appearing to say that he will be able to bow to Putin's missile defense demands after the election; and this one. MSNBC has ignored the first two, and continued to write stories-about-the-stories like this and like the endless reminders about Romney's religion. I don't believe that the stories they choose to perpetuate are based on actual levels of public interest. I believe, instead, that public interest is titillated by the stories they choose to hype.
