Toy grenade forces evacuation of World Financial Center Tower

NEW YORK -- A World Financial Center building across the street from the World Trade Center was evacuated Thursday because of a suspicious package that turned out to contain a toy grenade, police said.

Police said a private security guard noticed the package during an X-ray screening at 2 World Financial Center, a 44-story building with 2.7 million square feet of office space.

The item, which came through the mail, turned out to be a novelty grenade mounted on a plaque that read "Complaint Dept. Pull Pin," police said.

A law enforcement source tells NBC New York that a maintenance worker at the building had ordered the item and had it shipped to him there.

People were let back into the building about an hour and a half after police were called.

The World Financial Center is home to major financial institutions including Merrill Lynch, Deloitte and OppenheimerFunds Inc.

The complex is made up of four glass and copper-crowned towers and encompasses more than eight million square feet of office space.

Sooo... Why did the Janitor send a toy grenade to himself? Sounds kind of suspicious to me. I bet he filed for unemployment today.

I daresay we'll get a bunch of comments now about irresponsible behavior or authorities overreacting, but I thought this was funny.

What do you want to bet that maintenance worker is now among the job hunters.

We had one of those at the auto repair shop, and at several other places I have worked. One place had a sign that read "We shoot every third salesman, the second one just left."

          Really?!?

If this wasn't SO funny, it'd be embarrassing!

We have completely given up our man-card.

We have one of those "complaint department" grenade pushpin signs in several parts of our office, but after 9/11, I can understand why finding a toy grenade in that area would have hit a nerve.

I was thinking that there would be something when I read the Rock Center Report last night. I was thinking mainly of how the tower is called like the heavenly tower or something and compared to that. It made me think of the Heavenly sword of Cao Cao and I was thinking if they would name the next tower the tower of light but that sounds bad because one of these were taken by Zhao Yun. It seems to be a test run of security and I'm not sure what the next real attack will look like. I'd think of like Die Hard the movie where cars are driving real fast and into buildings. Then you could set off a bomb in one of the WTC buildings. A mail package bomb wouldn't take down the building but could hurt people and put fear into others unless it was a nuke. I wish I had said something but I didn't think any thing would happen that bad. I like the 104 floors because it is like my birthday. Al-Qaida is liking to use planes we have seen and car bombs and package bombs and other weapons. I'd think they can not come up with a new plan and it will be an old weapon of theres. It is hard to take down this building, it is stronger and made better and so it is tough to tell what will happen. I didn't remember how far we were with the new WTC buildings, it is not covered much. I don't plan on going to NYC again but it is sad to hear about that people are angery over America having its buildings to help itself in finansial afairs.

If I was al-Qaida I would drive a strong dump truck or a vehicle like it to clear the path of another vehicle into the WTC, like a van or such could follow with a big bomb the size of taking down the tower. I"d think of adding pillars and protective guards to pervent all vehicles from entering the buildings because that is to easy of a plan to come up with. Al-Qaida and mail bombs sounds fake and it is no real plan of an attack by anyone to take down the building unless it was a nuke. The use of a plane does seem good but the new WTC buildings are suppost to be well built enough to handle a plane attack I think.

I recently visited ground zero and believe me, it was very sobering. Security all around the area is thick and so it should be. I am in disbelief that an individual who worked around the area would be stupid enough to do what this bonehead did, mailing a toy grenade to himself at the site where terrorists changed lives, took lives. It is in NO way funny. I hope the guy is now unemployed, what a complete moron. His actions caused work to cease, fear to be heightened, again.....what a bonehead. Ground zero is not an area where crap like that can be tolerated and by working around the area how could he not have known better? NOT funny, NOT tolerated.
