Zuhdi Jasser takes part a news conference in front of police headquarters in New York, on March 5. Jasser was there with dozens of activists to demonstrate support for the NYPD and its surveillance of Muslim groups across the Northeast.
One way to elicit a collective groan among established American Muslim leaders: Mention Zuhdi Jasser. The U.S. Senate did just that recently when it appointed the Arizona physician and activist to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.
On Thursday, a coalition of 64 groups representing American Muslim lawyers, students, Arab Americans and mosques and an array of advocacy organizations called on the legislators to rescind the naming of Jasser – a controversial figure who many American Muslims see as a shill for anti-Muslim bigots.
The stated mission of the commission is "to promote the freedom of religion and belief, and it seeks to combat religious extremism, intolerance, and repression throughout the world."
In the letter of protest delivered Thursday, critics said Jasser’s "consistent support for measures that threaten and diminish religious freedoms within the United States demonstrates his deplorable lack of understanding of and commitment to religious freedom and undermines the USCIRF’s express purpose." The letter was delivered to Senate leaders including Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who chose Jasser.
McConnell’s office did not respond to calls for comment on the appointment.
The commission has a backroom role in U.S. foreign policy by putting together reports for the president, the State Department and Congress on violations of religious freedom and designating "countries of concern." Appointments for the commission's 10 slots are divided among the president and the two parties in each chamber of the legislature. In this case, the appointment was made by Senate minority leader McConnell.
"There are a myriad of American Muslim scholars, lawyers and activists who have demonstrated clear commitments to the principles of religious freedom and tolerance and would easily qualify for this position," said Farhana Khera, executive director for the nonprofit civil rights group Muslim Advocates and former counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
"Since Jasser has no such commitment and is not qualified, Sen. McConnell should rescind his appointment," she said.
Jasser, a U.S.-born Muslim of Syrian descent and physician in Phoenix, takes the position that many of the groups and mosques considered "mainstream" Muslims in the United States are actually breeding a type of political Islam that aims to convert and control other Americans.
The American Islamic Forum for Democracy, a nonprofit Jasser founded in 2003, "advocates for the preservation of the founding principles of the U.S. Constitution, liberty and freedom, through the separation of mosque and state," according to the group's website.
Jasser has been sought by the media and others to represent moderate Muslims, and at times pitted against leaders of more-established Muslim groups in the United States.
He gained a national spotlight at the first of the controversial hearings chaired by Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., on the threat from radicalization in the U.S. Muslim community. While many civil rights and Muslim groups argued that the premise of the hearings was biased, Jasser testified that the threat of domestic extremists was real.
Jasser supported an Oklahoma referendum that would ban the consideration of "Shariah law" in courts, one of many such measures around the country that are being challenged for their constitutionality.
He recently applauded a surveillance program run by the New York Police Department that broadly targeted the Muslim population based on religion without evidence or suspicion of wrongdoing.
On March 5, Jasser led a small demonstration in New York aiming "to put an end to the one-sided international media coverage of attacks against the most successful and legal counter-terrorism programs of the NYPD."
"In fact, our anti-Islamist Muslims are often the primary targets of radical groups," said Jasser in a press release on the event. "As a silent majority of American Muslims, we thank God every day for the NYPD."
Jasser had not yet responded to requests from msnbc.com for an interview about the protest, but he commented to a publication in the nation's capital when the critics were still circulating their petition among American Muslim groups.
"They want to publicly tar and feather me so if our Commission has any interactions with foreign governments where they’ve been working with Islamists and other groups I’ve criticized … they can publicly say, 'He doesn’t represent us,'" Jasser told the Washington Free Beacon. "They’re trying to marginalize the relationships we could have with their allies abroad."
One of the Muslim groups that Jasser asserts has a concealed Islamist agenda is the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a large nonprofit civil rights organization.
Corey Saylor, legislative director for CAIR, suggests the opposite is true.
"It is unfortunate that anti-Muslim forces are propping up Jasser because he says what they want to hear and gives them cover for their activities," said Saylor. "It’s troubling."

Go to hell you bastards!
What's the problem? Mitch McConnell is my main Muslim Republican Brother! He has more Islam in him than Jasser, though not as much as Mullah Santorum. Come pray to Mecca with me, Republican Brother!
Yea Az guy, do they get to take 76 Hot Virgins with them?
Ive been saying this for YEARS!!! Finally someone admits it!
REALLY??? They stopped reading the quran?
Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."
If they don't like it they can blow it out their bowanas and burkas. They can move to Iran, Pakistan or Somalia if they feel that way. We have SECULAR laws. Last time I checked, there were no chains holding them here.
I like to burn qurans for fun. I am eating souls by standing in the smoke! I love it!
!حرق حرق حرق
Sorry I think we have every right to watch them, yea there
are good Muslims, but what about the bad ones? 911 changed our lives, all of America
has suffered, so what makes them special? I am in support to protect our home
land, if they don’t like it, please move back to the Middle East!!
There are a lot of "good" and "bad" across the spectrum of religions, politics and anything else.
Yes, Beth, but other religions, politics, etc. did not blow up two buildings and kill thousands of people in one day. I know that, of course, there are fine Muslims...like my two doctors. But the bad ones are very bad indeed.
I just can not believe how many people are blind. I do not care what you think about Islam. You allow government surveillance on any group of people, you open the doors for surveillance on EVERY group of people. For ANY reason. Look at the big picture everyone! Your rights should be more valuable than your lives.
my doctor is a bad muslim, he told me he was going to give me a prostate exam. and then he proceeded to molest me, i still have nightmares of him using his finger in that way and am scarred for life
9/11 as an excuse to single out and alienate a segment of the American population is getting pretty worn out.
Zuhdi Jasser is a fair and logical man , certainly what he has written and said that I have reviewed
Careful yourself. See how you stereotype all muslims as Middle Eastern and insist "we go back if we dont like it"?? Its these bigots we speak of as muslims on a daily basis, as we commit to minding our own business. If youdo not like Muslims, maybe you should move back to Europe and close yourself within. We are forced to lick boots and are scoffed if we dont apologize for what the atrocities the hijackers commited on 911. I did no such acts, therefore why should I apologize? I will use the same explanation of NOT apologizing, as the European Americans use for their forefathers and slavery. #AtlantaMuslimBornAndBred
Maybe we should just let the government watch everyone. Extremists blew up not just the twin towers but also the Murrah Bldg in OK. Or does it bother you to think about the government keeping tabs on blondes? Or students (SDS, the Weathermen, anyone?) Where do you think that crack in the door will stop?
The Islamists do not want anyone in a position to influence policy who recognizes the difference between Islam as a religion and Islam as a political system. Jasser has no problem with the religious side and also recognizes the threat posed by the political side. It seems to me that he was a very good choice for this position. CAIR is without a doubt and Islamist organization that pushes the political side of the equation.
This video speaks volumes of the mentality we are dealing with:

@ JS
the point of Islam as a political system is something that Zuhdi Jasser has discussed many times and makes it a bit clearer
This Muslim criticism of Jasser is absurd. The fundamental foundation of Islam is based on hostility to freedom of religion. Islam believes it is the only true religion and it must marganilize and eliminate all others. Intolerance of other religious beliefs is a hallmark of the Phrophet's preaching. In countries dominated by Islam all other views are discriminated against. In Egypt Christians can't repair their churches without a permit form the Islamic government ; they can't build churches. In Sauda Arabia , bring a Read the Koran and learn.
Intolerance cannot be tolerated.
There are no anti-Muslim bigots. This country has bent over backward to be fair to our muslim citizens and not blame them for the horrible crimes their kin have committed.
But there are plenty of anti-American muslim criminals and terrorists. Wanting suspicious people and suspicious behavior to be monitored does NOT make me a bigot.
"He recently applauded a surveillance program run by the New York Police Department that broadly targeted the Muslim population based on religion without evidence or suspicion of wrongdoing." And he's being entrusted to be on a commission to promote religious freedom?????????? Hmmmm...I'm confused.
Baldman: Did you catch the sarcasm on the comment by simply put, didn't you?
Really? Answer me this: are you going to enjoy any rights when you're six feet under or in an urn? What would you rather be, a live coward or a dead hero?
Thought so.
Nailed it. They're as bad as the KKK.
"Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them."
― A.A. Milne
Excepting if the weed is a Muslim weed. Then it's a dose of Round-up that's needed
Jennifer, learn your Constitution. Surveillance is not the same as freedom of religion. Mistrust of a group is not banning freedom of religion. Monitoring individuals who happen to worship in a building - based on politcal views - is not preventing the practice of religion.
Duh.
If the police or other governmental body was halting the religious service, or condemning the property without just reason, or outlawing (the Muslim false worship) on Fridays...THAT would be against the first amendment.
"The American Islamic Forum for Democracy, a nonprofit Jasser founded in 2003, "advocates for the preservation of the founding principles of the U.S. Constitution, liberty and freedom, through the separation of mosque and state," "
Which is why he's opposed by the more radical groups in America - Most Muslims don't believe in 'separation of church and state'. Sharia Law is a prime example, trying to impose religious rules on a secular society.
I was wondering why they would be irked then i saw the part about combating extremists, intolerance and repression throughout the world. That's why. But then anything with the intelligence span of a knat that don't follow their idea irks them.
No, it's because he's a right-wing shill.
In the US the only people wanting to have our secular government enforce their religious rules are the Christofascists, like Rick Santorum and the other GOP candidates.
I DEMAND an IMMEDIATE DOJ, FBI investigation, and a Grand Jury into this. I am OUTRAGED.!!!
what "rules" are they wanting to have enforced on you? , thanks for listing and explaining them
Shrek,
Christofacist? Really, I have never heard Santorum or any right wing, tea party member wish death upon another, yet I have heard it repeatedly from the left. They talk like they want to support women but in one breath they attack Palin for not staying home and then in the next attack Mrs. Romney for staying home. The left are two faced hypocrites that think they can crap on any one they wish but don't you dare do it to them. Well, fair play is fair play. All I hope is that we the American people have our eyes open enough to throw the rest of the people that threw the American people under the bus out of office along with Obama who will end up being the worst president in the history of the U.S.
lf you have to ask,
You might want to look at the colored coalition and the first lady along with the czars. We have people never elected, never having gone before congress telling us what to eat, deciding our health care, attacking anyone along with their advertisers if they dare support anyone that is not pro-socialist, pro-Obama. They are under Obama been given more and more power, and we even have people in place that are traitors that have advocated overthrowing the constitution and our way of life. And the sad thing is they have the support of the white house. This president should be sitting in jail, not the white house.
Certainly they ... maybe not on such a large scale, but certainly have killed large numbers of people including, but not limited to:
Oklahoma City -- McVey
Basque Terrorists -- 40 + years of violence in Europe
Bombing of the Octoberfest -- 1980 -- right wing terrorist group
Bader-Meinhoff - Left wing -- Cold War Era, Europe
Irish Republican Army/ Provisional IRA -- Ireland, pretty much ALL of the last century
Shining Path -- Peru
Plus hundreds more.
So ... this tells you that in additional to Muslims we should be watching Peruvians, Germans, Irish, etc. Oh yes, and of course, our fellow Americans.
Beth ------- We live in the 21 century. In the year 2012. Muslim violence now constitutes the overwhelming % of terrorism in the world today. Their violence is based on the tenets of their religion which requires them to spread it around the entire world and eliminate all other belief systems. Read the Koran for confirmation. We should oppose all terrorists and at this time the vast majority are animated by Islam.
@Tbenton
ummm ,ya , I don't need to look at that stuff , already did , my retort was to the gentleman that said Republicans were trying to enforce religious rules on him
thanks anyway
Beth said:
"So ... this tells you that in additional to Muslims we should be watching Peruvians, Germans, Irish, etc. Oh yes, and of course, our fellow Americans."
your right Beth , especially those "Americans" like Bill Ayres and those that associate with him
Shrekk , I don't see the list of "rules" , please post the list so as back up your rediculous statement
REMEMBER 9 1 1 ? We will never forget!! Protect the USA.. Watch them, follow them, deport them!!
Amen! I am Sick and Tired of CAIR and every other Muslim group Whining and Crying and Trying to Implement their Sick and Twisted "religion" into OUR way of life and CHANGE IT TO SUIT THEM!! I think that this man is Very Good choice if the Muslims don't like him! WAKE UP PEOPLE!! The Muslims are infiltrating every aspect of OUR system and lives and then complaining if we OBJECT! I will NEVER forget 9-11 and like the woman once said in a post regarding Islam-"I DON'T CARE!! Frankly, I, and MILLIONS of other AMERICANS, Do NOT Want You Here!!!
Dagoth Ur,
Did you really say that "rights are more important than life", blow yourself up and you will have 1 million virgins you stupid F&^k! There is nothing more important than life itself!
Yeah Bearwolf & Dave P, let's deport them all. And in the process let's deport Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Shaq, Larry Johnson, Mike Tyson, Rep. Keith Ellison, Capt. James Yee, Rep. Andre Carson, Rima Fakih, Yussef Lateef, Fazlur Khan (the designer of the Sears Tower), Ahmed Zewail (Nobel Prize of Chemistry), Fareed Zakaria, etc. And on the way out they can take with them the body of Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan (muslim soldier KIA) from Arlington National Cemetery. Wake up? In your case it's please, get off your sH*t hole, stop watching FIX News and inform yourself before spewing your hate. By the way, where are we going to deport them? They're all AMERICANS!
Let's all just be atheist and end all this nonsense.
Still a few centuries off, I'd say.
Tony---------Do you know what Muslims do to atheists?
Exactly. They hate atheists more than any other group.
HotTicket, in reply to your comment on the first post.
There are better ways to ensure safety for you, and liberty for not only the Muslims, but everyone else than surveillance. The problem is people are a bit too lazy to go looking for the best of both worlds, so they settle on the simple option.
As long as "Good Muslims" do nothing about turning in their rotten apples, I refuse to trust a single one. They are no different than "I'm Not A Nazi!" Germans who gave the green light to the murder of over 50 million people in WWII. By the way, it is a known fact Muslims were pro-Nazi during WWII, even to the point of having a Muslim SS Division. Two groups who's goal was/is to dominate the earth.
As the saying goes, "You are either with us or against us".
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem organizes recruitment to Bosnia's SS division
During the Second World War in Yugoslavia, as with the Catholic Church in Croatia, many Muslim clerics in Bosnia and Kosovo were willing accomplices in the genocide of the nations Serbian, Jewish and Roma population. From 1941 until 1945, the Nazi-installed regime of Ante Pavelic in Croatia carried out some of the most horrific crimes of the Holocaust (known as the Porajmos by the Roma), killing over 800,000 Yugoslav citizens - 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Roma. In these crimes, they were helped by Muslim fundamentalists in Bosnia and Kosovo who were openly supported by the Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini. A notorious anti-Semite, he openly encouraged Muslims to join Nazi units that would be later implicated in genocide and crimes against humanity - the infamous Hanjar (or Handschar) 13th Waffen SS division. One of these crimes was the The Massacre at Koritska Jama Gorge, in Bosnia during 1941. The Nazi's also established a puppet state in Serbia under General Milan Nedic, who along with the Cetniks also particapated in the Holocaust in wartime Croatia (which included Bosnia) and Serbia.
What united al-Husseini and the Third Reich was a common hatred of the Jewish people. The Nazis had taken al-Husseini under their protection following the wartime invasion of Iraq. He was to spend most of the war living in a luxurious suite at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin. Hitler had enjoyed quite a following among the nationalist youth of Egypt during the war, after Nassiri Nasser, the brother of the future president of Egypt, had published an Arab edition of Mein Kampf in 1939, describing its author as the "strongest man of Europe". Not surprisingly, Egypt became like Argentina after the war - a safe haven for SS war criminals who fled there after the war. Many were keen to help President Nasser in his attempts to destroy the State of Israel. There is evidence that the shadowy ODESSA network helped many of them to Egypt. Apart from Syria - who still host the wanted SS war criminal Alois Brunner, it was in Egypt that the Post-war Arab links to the ODESSA network were strongest.
Many of the victims of the Holocaust/Porajmos were murdered in the Second World War's third largest death camp - Jasenovac, where over 200,000 people - mainly Orthodox Serbs met their deaths. Some 240,000 were "rebaptized" into the Catholic faith by fundamentalist Clerics in "the Catholic Kingdom of Croatia" as part of the policy to "kill a third, deport a third, convert a third" of Yugoslavia's Serbs, Jews and Roma in wartime Bosnia and Croatia (The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican, Vladimar Dedijer, Anriman-Verlag, Freiburg, Germany, 1988).
The most senior Muslim cleric to be involved in the Holocaust/Porajmos was Hajj Amin al-Husseini, who according to the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust (Edition 1990, Volume 2, Pages 706 and 707), made a substantial contribution to the Axis war effort by organizing "in record time" recruitment to Muslim SS units in Croatia that would be involved in some of the worse atrocities of the Second World War.
Altogether, it is estimated that some 20,000 Muslims fought in the Hanjar (Sword) SS Division, which fought against Yugoslav partisans led by General Tito, and carried out police and security details in fascist Hungary. The Nazi's recruited two SS divisions from Yugoslavia's Muslim population: the infamous Bosnian 13th Waffen Hanjar (or Handschar) SS division, and the Albanian Skanderbeg 21st Waffen SS division. SS conscription in Yugoslavia during the war produced 42,000 Waffen SS and police troops
Hey, the Italians and many spaniards were pro-nazi too, we should profile and watch them too. Then we have the Japanses who attacked Pearl Harbor... Isn't that where "Never Forget" came from.... oh no that was from the Spanish-American war when the blew up the USS Maine. Remember the Maine.
Dang there are just way to many people we need to watch.
and look what happened to the japs after pearl harbor. they all got put behind wire fences in camps, lol camps. Well anyways, lets go back to putting the bad guy back into camps, worked in wwII will work now, right?
Patrick, I never heard you condemn Timothy McVeigh - who was a fundamentalist christian. So I guess that you are an extremist domestic terrorist also (in fact - I never heard any of the christian evangelists condemn him)... Just using your own argument...
interested observer ---------- We should condemn all cold blood murders of the innocent , McVeigh and the thousands upon thousands of Muslims who have murdered tens of thousands of innocents across the world in the past 30 years. Execute any and all of them just as we did McVeigh. For ever non-Muslim engaging in this murderous behavior there are thousands of Muslims. Comprehend the significance of that ratio? 1:thousands.
It's also a 'known fact' that almost ALL the NAZI's of WWII were either Protestant or Catholic so the argument that they put together a small 'Muslim SS' group is idiotic at best.
When I read all these postings I get convinced every day more that Religion is the opiate of the masses. There is not a single religion in the world that has not stained their hands with other people's blood. Crusades (the 9 of them), Inquisitions (there were 4), Pogroms, and the Holocaust gives you an idea of the hypocrisy of ALL religions. If you are so eloquent defending your religion, why don't you follow it. Don't the good book (?) commands you "Thou shall not murder"? And yet we kill, maim, destroy, and punish everyone and everything in the name of God?
You want to understand why Muslims and Near-Easterners hater Westerners? Read a little about history before jumping to conclusions. You consider them monsters? We made them monsters. We divided their lands to satisfy our lust for their products (Read about the Sykes-Picot Agreements on 1916 and how the Western divided the land creating Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, not considering the peoples of the regions but their thirst for oil). If you want to remain ignorant and bigot is up to you, the Constitution grant you that right, courtesy of a group of people who were more open minded than your judgment today, with much less information and opportunities that you enjoy today. You haters are pathetic.
Wow and most of you call yourselves Americans? Islam is no more dangerous than any other religion. Christianity is JUST as bad, if not worse then Islam. Might as well hang all Catholic priest as well, because I guess some have perverted ideas about children. And just drown all of our servicemen because they might go on a killing spree in a village.
Let's watch all black people for the few who sell Crack. Oh, let's watch all the white people who cook Methamphetamine. Unibomber was white, let's watch all people with beards as well. Timothy of OK City Bombings was white, let's start watching all short haired Blonde fellas as well now.
So, let's watch every group, every race, and every religion who poses a threat to the Goverment, to protect our" Freedoms". Yeah - you see, a Country DOES do that - it's called North Korea. And that's how you lose ALL of our rights.
Sad when I see some Americans turn into prejudice bigots, and asking for Police State policies. A few religious nuts blew up a few buildings and you morons blame a whole people. I'll keep my freedom and protect myself thank you. Extreme whackos are everywhere, of any race, and any religion.
Let's keep the rights of our citizens or we lose our country and goverment anyway. That's EXACTLY what terrorism preys on. Terrify the fools, and watch how they implode and destroy themselves.
interested observer - "(in fact - I never heard any of the christian evangelists condemn him)..."
Need to change your name cause you just weren't listening. From Billy Graham to Pat Robertson and beyond, every Christian I heard on TV, radio or read in print was aghast ot the outright idiocy of McVeigh. Far more Christian groups condemned him for his actions than Muslim groups ever condemned the lunacy of 9/11, the USS Cole, Kobar Towers, bombing of several embassies, the US Marine Barracks in Beirut, the kidnapping and assassinations in the 80's and 90's, the beheading of Daniel Pearl and others, etc. You heard far more from the Christian Coalition about McVeigh in one year than you ever heard from CAIR about the terrorism of the last 3 decades.
justice for all - Unfortunately, Radical Islamists were at war with the West for more than 15 years before we finally ealized we were at war and got into it. No matter why it has happened, it has happened and we are either in it to win it or we should just appease the radicals and quit. Not being a spineless worm, I would prefer the win, but that's just me.
"Hitler was reportedly content with deporting the Jews out of Europe to Palestine. Husseini perceived this as a threat to his stronghold in Palestine and pushed successfully for the extermination of the European Jews." He was even know to visit the death camps to watch the murdering of jews. al-Husseini was one of the founders of the Arab League and a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood who's fundementals are no different now than when husseini was in power. The same people Mr.Obama praises are the same ones who call for the bombing of Coptic Churches in Egypt and force conversion of non-muslim pre-teens and teens to Islam, maybe the Obama Admin. will openly condemn these acts of terror and not be intimidated by CAIR.
I'm more worried that many of the groups and churches considered "mainstream" Christians in the United States are actually breeding a type of political evangelicalism that aims to convert and control other Americans, especially in the South.
ya i fear evangelicals too, never know when theyre going to knock on my door and ask me if i found jesus. its usually when im napping, and its hard for me to get back to sleep. If only muslims were as easy to get rid of as it is the evangelicals by saying that i belong to the church of satin. They tend to run away really fast, its funny, works on jehovahs witnesses too.
Muslims killing US soldiers in Afghanistan due to some religious slight, accident or not, offend me. So, if this hits "a raw nerve", so be it.
key word? SOLDIERS IN AFGHANISTAN. Bring our troops home, and off there land.
When the TERRORISTS in Afghanistan STAY OVER THERE and stop trying to come OVER HERE and kill us, then we can bring our troops home. They are not going to do that, though, are they?
....Islam is a religion, US is a country. If you want to compare say Islam vs Christian or Afghan person/soldier/Taliban vs US soldier. The 911 was performed by people who happened to be Muslim; the person who killed 77+ people in Norway was a Christianist so was McVeigh. In retaliation to 911 we are in Afghanistan (where the people think that the Russians never left; think that we are Russians) and in Iraq. And which country lies in the middle, Iran. Where are the good Christians complaining about the killings in Afghanistan and Iraq where over 100,000 people died in 11 years. How many killings are enough? How many radicals are there in the world? You don't need many to cause havoc in this world. Few hundred fanatics can do much damage, sometimes one crazy person!
Regarding the SS Bosnian division in WWII. They were not the only group who joined the SS. Th SS by the end of the war were about 70% non-German recruited from all over Europe. The idea was to form a European Army to fight against the Bolshevik Jews according to the Nazis. There were Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians, French, Danes, Ukrainians, Estonians, Italians, Hungarians, Romanians, etc who joined the SS. In the final days of the war in Berlin, the Reichstag was defended by the French and Norwegian SS soldiers and very few Germans. So let's not single out a single group based on their religion.
We are Americans. We live under the Constitution that pretty much says. we are all created equal before the law regardless of our religion, race, creed, or national origin and have the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. So, no to Sharia Law, or any other religious laws, we are a country based on the Constitution. If persons want to live under their religious laws like the Mormons, Jews, Moslems, Buddhist, etc that's their business and should not interfere or attempt to change the constitution/government to align with their religious views/book. Just because a person does bad we should not blame their religion, country or ethnic background, blame the individual and bring them to justice via due process of law.
In the 911 case a bunch of people committed suicide by ramming into WTC, Pentagon, UA 93 in Penna. Go after them which we did and are continuing to do so. I ask the question: Islam forbids suicide like the Roman Catholic Church since God gave you life and only God can take it away, and you cannot take anyone elses life. I am sure other religions have similar beliefs. Then why these suicide bombing? Is it similar to the Japanese Kamikaze pilots in WWII knowing that the war was lost committed suicide by ramming their planes into our battleships hoping to slow down our advance and that we would sue for peace!
nani--------- the highest good in Islam is to die in Jihad fighting and killing non-Muslims. That's what the Muslims did on 911. According to Islam they are with Allah now and the murderers believed that is what would happen when they died and that's why they did it. Read the Koran to see how the only sure way to heaven is to die fighting to advance Islam.
When the framers of the Constitution created the 1st amendment they had no idea such a hateful religion that is dead set against western values would come to the America.
Western values like the anihilation of the Native American Population & the Enslavement of Africans?
driver -------Islam engaged in slavery longer than any civilization in history, much , much longer than it was tolerated in America. Muhammad , the Prophet , the founder of Islam approved of slavery and personally had many himself.
I bet you don't care, right? Still want to attack the Western democracies and apply a double standard.
Farhana, why should we take your word that he is not qualified? You sound a little biased.
It is people like you that continue to raise the feelings of distrust of Muslims, especially those that claim to be "American" but do not demonstrate it.
You appear to make your religion more important than the rights of all Americans.
Do muslims like Jasser raise a feeling of trust of muslims in you ? Why not ?
Mr.India --------Because he is an anomaly.
Bill from Oregon --- What is laughable is that the criticisms that Farhana Khera levels against this appointment apply not to the appointee but to Islam itself. It is intolerant of any other religion but Islam. It's very tenets in the Koran and throughout history are aimed at eliminating any other thought system. Read the Koran ; see what Muhammad said to do to other religions, see what he did to other belief systems. Don't be fooled by the nonsense from the Muslims opposed to freedom of thought and religion.
No. Out of over a billion muslims, a few thousand terrorists are anamolies. I have known plenty stand up muslims in my life and though i hate terrorists and sometime after a particularly nasty incident (like 911) tend to let my prejudices take hold of my reason, I try to use the rational side of my brain and try to watch out for those kinda generalizations and stereotypes.
"mainstream" Muslims in the United States are actually breeding a type of political Islam that aims to convert and control other Americans.
That pretty much says it all. According to islam---you are muslim, convoert to islam or die. There is no tolerance in islam---the only "peace" they allow is theirs---enslavement of women, death as a universal punishment, no freedon of thought, speech or choice.
If you have any questions---just GOOGLE "koran" and read it for yourself!!!!
and The Christian religion is so much different? Far as I can see, each one has their way of using their religious beliefs on others.
The Christian religion is VERY MUCH DIFFERENT, dumbass! It does NOT enslave women as Islam does, it does NOT go around BEHEADING people just because they are "different" and not "a believer", women do NOT have to cover themselves up to the point of ABSURDITY, women CAN have Male friends without "permission" of another Male family member, a Female is NOT stoned to Death due to her being RAPED, as in Islam (how UTTERLY INSANE is That??!!), we do NOT Force women(Girls?) to marry someone they do Not Want to marry, ESPECIALLY if they are 12, 13, 14, years old! Should I go on? Islam is still living the the DARK AGES and Refuses to join the modern world. Islam makes The Spanish Inquisition look like a family picnic! Frankly, I am an AMERICAN who can NEVER trust a Muslim as far as I can pick up Ten of them and throw them! I have NO reason to trust them. I have EVERY reason to Distrust them as long as I remember 9-11 and the Americans that have been beheaded simply because they WERE American! So far, I have Not seen ANY of the "Peacefulness" of Islam that so many espouse! Quite the contrary!
What about the Bible where 'God' commands his followers to kill non- believers huh? God specifically exhorts 'His' people to "rip the children from the wombs of un- believing women and kill them" in the Old Testament/Torah.
How many Muslims do you, personally know?
driver---- How difficult is it see Christians aren't doing that? How easy is it to see that Muslims are flying planes into buildings , bombing trains , bombing markets , bombing restaurants , bombing weddings , bombing buildings , throwing acid on girls , forcing girls to marry their rapists , murdering their daughters who only want to chose their own spouse or go to school so they can read and write?
How many Nazis did you know? If none , does that mean you can't judge what they did to be horrendous? How many of the communist thugs Stalin sent out to murder the innocent in Russia did you know? Think you can't judge them unless you knew them? You need to think a little harder about these issues.
NAZI's were ALL bad guys. Muslims are NOT all bad guys. By the way, there are PLENTY of active NAZI's right here in the US today.
Bombings, murder & mayhem by 'Christians' in the name of 'God'?: Northern Ireland for 800 years, although that has calmed down recently. The 'Inquisition' although that officially ended around 150 yeas or so years ago. The Holocaust. Yes Hitler claimed and his followers (the vast majority of whom were Protestant and Catholic) believed that he was "doing 'God's' work". The KKK etc. The point being that NO religious faith has a monopoly on the violence and mayhem of lunatic fringe, psychopathic elements & none has a monopoly on kindness and goodness.
driver ----------- We live in the year 2012. We have to stop murder in our time , the only time we can influence. During times before we were alive , we have no control over events. What sense does it make to blame individuals alive today for events that occurred before they were living?
Today, those murdering others because of religious beliefs are overwhelming Muslims. That is simple reality. You do those alive now no good by excusing what the Muslims are doing today by pointing out that other have done wrong in the past.
By the way, since you did not know any Nazis personally , how do you know they were all bad? I ask since above you seem to imply if you don't know someone personally you can't judge them.
Dave P-376614 Really Dave? The Christian Religion is not much different? How many thousands of people have died over the last 500 YEARS because of the Christian Religion? How many children were exposed to pedophiles in the Catholic Church, and they did nothing about it? Gays/Lesbians are told they will go to hell because of the Christian Faith?
and you sit there and say the Christian faith is NOTHING like Islam? Get over yourself, it is just as bad in many ways. It's when you get a few 'extremists' like the west boro baptist church that make it really bad.
Enclosed below are some things that BIBLE allows me to do.. When can I own you as a slave? The bible says I can...
Dear Dr. Laura
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I
have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that
knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend
the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that
Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other
specific laws and how to follow them.
1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a
pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors.
They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in
Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair
price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in
her period of menstrual cleanliness - Lev.15:19-24. The problem is,
how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and
female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend
of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can
you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus
35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated
to kill him myself?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than
homosexuality. I don.t agree. Can you settle this?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I
have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading
glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room
here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair
around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.
19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes
me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two
different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing
garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester
blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really
necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town
together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn.t we just burn them to
death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with
their in-laws? (Lev.20:14)
Jasser sounds like my kind of guy - he will be welcome in this post - it's time to get rid of all who promote extremism, including all these groups who are sounding off negatively about this guy. I want to pray the way I want to pray and nobody has the right or ability to take that away from me.....
Offended? I know of over 3,000 people that were offended in the US and over 5,000 that were offended in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unlike Iran , we aren't putting people on trial for their religious beliefs.
And where were they from, Saudi Arabia, but we did not do anything to them.
Hate is not a good way to act. Muslims like Christians have a certain amount of looneys.
Christian hate is no better then Muslim hate.
thre are loonies in all walks of life religious or not.
Yeah, "Muslims like Christians have a certain amount of looneys". Guess that the Muslims have Ten times more of them makes no difference, huh? I don't notice OUR looneys going all over the world KILLING people who don't believe as they do.
uh. really? think about it.
Muslims have no other purpose in life but to convert or kill infidels.
The Koran says this in black and white.
And I do not believe there are true "moderate" Muslims.
I believe they sit back and watch the extremist do all the dirty work as cover.
To be moderate goes against their religion.
True enough, it's pretty hard to argue that they are peace loving and benign when their very own "holy" book says the opposite. Don't believe me? Google the following: "Koran kill" and see what you find!
Very very ugly stuff. Yeah yeah, the Bible had nasty stuff in it as well but Christians stopped taking it literally (except for small groups of kooks) long long ago, and most of it was in the old testament anyways. Why do Muslum's deny what their own Koran says, do they think we are too stupid not to read the stuff for ourselves? To summarize in a few words it says to "kill jews" "kill infidels" "kill apostates" kill, kill, kill, "vengeance is sweet" etc etc, it's all in there...ugly stuff, ugly book.
And the Bible's Old Testament/Torah says that 'God' exhorted His 'people' to "rip the children from the wombs of un- believing women and kill them" among MANY other violent and bloodthirsty passages.
How many Muslims do you personally know?
All religion is UGLY.
Religion is the scourge of man.
Something MAN made.
It is not what I believe God wants.
Yet the Muslims are commanded by the Koran to kill.
What you are looking at with the old testament is a lesson, not a command.
It never happened.
diver - Apparently you cannot read! The point I make is not what the Bible says, (particularly the old testament) but what people BELIEVE. I'm not going to repeat myself, if you are too stupid to make a relevant response, so be it. How many Muslims do I know? One, and as far as I know he is smart enough not to buy into the Koran's ugliness, but unfortunately, there aren't enough like him.
As much as there is a effort to prevent Sharia Law being considered in court, we must also prevent the teachings of the Catholic Church bishops to establish their doctrine in legislation. We must adhere to the separation of church and state, otherwise the prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment will be dissed by the worst of religious practices by Christians, Muslims and Jews.
dls-387641 - How are Catholic bishops attempting to establish their doctrine in legislation? Are you talking about the birth control mandate? That's a matter of the Obama administration mandating through administrative law that religious employers pay for contraception against their beliefs. It's not a matter of the Catholic Church attempting to outlaw contraception.
I'm getting the idea that the people who support this piece of administrative law don't really have a firm grasp on exactly what it says.
American Muslims better behave themselves b/c another 9/11 and there will be hell to pay, thus I would think they would be all for surveillance, etc. After all, it's not like their cult has been totally benign these last few years.
The number of people who died in on 9/11 is about 10% of those who die on America's roads every year.
Where is the survelliance police state and warfare on the industry that's caused now, 110 times as many deaths and probably considerably more in property damage?
The point is, people are filled with hate not because of some objective event. They just are that way.
shoot - so, you are comparing deaths from 9/11 to highway deaths?! Wha? huh? There is no connection what-so-ever, and to imply one is retarded. People are filled with "hate" when 3000 of their countrymen/women are killed by a racist, fascist cult that claims it's actually "peaceful," yeah, I'd say we Americans have a damn good reason to be slightly pissed off, and if American "muslim's" were truly American, THEY would be pissed off at their fellow muslims as well, instead of whining about how they are "mistreated," cannot run around the country with veils on their faces, etc. They must choose, American first, Muslim second, and if they don't like it, then they need to go to a country where Theocracy rules, then they can be "Muslim" first, and whatever second...but, THAT would be ... dangerous (-:
shootoutbb - you are an idiot! Trying to compare deaths on roadways to people killed on 9/11 is like trying to compare apples and dirt. No one plots and plans to kill drivers. Auto deaths are accidents. Muslims purposely plotted to kill Americans on 9/11 out of pure hatred. They went so far as to send their henchmen to school to learn how to fly jets.
Amen to Both Watson and ABCzyx!! There is absolutely NO COMPARISON to 9-11 and highway deaths! That is an ASININE statement if ever there was one! My Car does not HATE me. My Car does NOT believe in killing me. My Car is an Inanimate object, not a live Person wishing to KILL me whenever it can simply because I am NOT Muslim!
The first thing we have to do before we even begin discussing this issue is getting our definitions right. Islam is nothing like what most Americans understand "religion" to mean, and this perpetual, reckless idiocy of conflating Islam with "religion" doesn't help anyone.
Islam means "peace acquired by submitting your will to Allah" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70mwmWXWPJs
It is described as a complete way of life with prescriptions on all human affairs: politics, common law, marriage, when and when not to use violence, e.t.c. Islam is essentially, a complete and outright political system with its own edifices on what constitutes the ideal society. Now Islam, taken as a whole, is inherently incompatible with the U.S. constitution. When you strip off everything else from it and leave only the religious aspect of Islam (remember, Islam is a complete way of life), then it is protected under the U.S. constitution as a religion.
What people like Jasser are trying to ensure is that the rights and liberties granted by the U.S. constitution to every religious group will not be abused by those whose agenda is to see all of Islam (not just the religious aspect) assimilated into American society. Those who want to live under Shariah law, the legal system of Islam that recommends cutting off peoples' hands for thieving, must necessarily get out of the U.S. because our constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishments!
Shariah law, in many instances, is just incompatible with the American constitution, and since Muslims in the U.S. are American citizens, they are expressly prohibited by the constitution of the U.S. from inflicting Sharia law on themselves too! Now those who would like to abuse our constitution would argue that this infringes on the Muslims' religious freedom. Well, they have a point, and this is something we have to fight! Jasser is on the front lines and it would be absolutely deplorable if any of you eager, bleeding heart liberals hasten to his condemnation before gathering your facts. Now I say liberal not out of taking a cheap shot at the other side since I am myself leftist and Atheist (ex-Muslim), but I will not stand idly by while your naive, misdirected sense of tolerance turns this country into the sh*thole I came from.
That is all.
...except that most Muslims in the US came here specifically to escape countries where Islam is too pervasive in everyday life beyond the "religious aspect". They came here to escape the "sh*tholes" that they came from and wish to live and embrace only the 'religious aspect' of Islam in peace in this land where they are free to do so. Yet here they are confronted by bigots who would deny them that freedom.
Unfortunately diver, I'm afraid your assessment is grossly incorrect.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/02/sharia-law-explained_n_1292452.html
According to this, Muslims don't the draconian legal code, just the ability to settle marital disputes and perform funerals as their religion deems fit. I ask, whether the U.S. law would be subservient to shariah on marriage.
diver - "except that most Muslims in the US came here specifically to escape countries where Islam is too pervasive in everyday life beyond the "religious aspect". BS! Then why are the whining about those ridiculous face coverings? Why all the effort to promote Sharia law? You need to open your eyes and read their "holy" book, instead of calling your fellow countrymen silly names. Educate yourself before you keep up with your stupid talk.
911 didn't change my life. The traitors in government changed my life by trashing the Consitution.
Know your REAL enemy.
9/11 didn't change YOUR life? Well isn't that special. It sure changed the lives of 3000 families (it shattered them!) ... you are a self-centered pussy whiner.
I don't know if I'm a pussy. LOL. But I'm fairly certain you have emotional issues, to say the least.
3000 families. And in retaliation we slaughtered over 100,000 people by conservative estimates--none of whom had anything to do with 911--and destroyed an entire country and turned it into a breeding ground for terrorists for generations to come. Compliments of president Bush who knowingly lied to Congress, committed treason, kissed the Saudis publicly, and walked off scott-free to live out his life in comfort, luxury, and peace.
We have lost the most precious right of any nation that claims liberty and freedom--habeas corpus--and we have lost the right to be secure in our homes and possessions, the right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure, and the right to travel unmolested and without restriction. To name a few.
If you think that's just fine, I'd have to say I don't think I'm the "pussy." BTW idiot-- I happen to be a woman. I could take great offense at your sexist remark, but I'll just consider the source. Hysterical morons can't really be held responsible for jumping to conclusions.
lol! I feel and am just as free now as I was before. The difference between us is one of empathy, which I have for my fellow countrymen/women, and you have for our enemies. But then again, after reading your rant, I'm not surprised (-;
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention Bush using the United States military to settle a personal vendetta. How many soldiers is he responsible for killing in addition to thousands of innocent Iraqi's?
But that doesn't bother you, I'm sure.
It rained today! Must be ... Bush. Also, what bothers me? American deaths in a war we didn't start, and that's it. Hey, too bad you weren't on one of the 9/11 planes, maybe you could have talked your Muslim pals out of it, though I doubt it (speaking of "sexist" we all know what Muslims think of - women, don't we (-; We all have our loyalties, and yours are not with this country, own it and be proud!
Have all those American Muslims ever considered that their presence in our cities -- where they complain about Christian symbols and practices -- has also hit a raw nerve with most Americans? Maybe if they assimilated, denounced shariah law, stopped their 'honor killings' and quit enslaving foreign nationals as housekeepers, they might gain a bit more acceptance by Americans, but NOT BEFORE THAT!
Someone said it before, and it's true, Islam is totally and completely incompatible with our history, culture and values, it's that simple. If they want to worship a child molesting mass murderer in their homes, whatever, but if they dare to attempt to impose that on the rest of us via so called "sharia", or by other means, there will be blood, muslim blood, and lots of it. If you are a hard core in your face Muslim, this is NOT the place for you! Get on a plane and head to the @!$%#holes of the middle east, who knows, maybe I'll meet you on a battlefield.
Offending Muslims doesn't bother me, I find their religion to be an offense against intelligent life in the universe, even more so than other supposedly 'great' religions.
Personally, I'm an evangelical agnostic, when someone of faith tries to convert me, I feel obligated to fervently share my doubts as to their alleged deity's existence.
If the muslims are not commiting a crime, they have nothing to worry about, not our fault their culture is the cause for so much pain and strife in that last 30 years. They made their bed, they sleep in it.
try the last 1500 years or so!
Offended??? Leave or deal with it.
Where does the Repug get these people from.
Sure a religious, non-tolerant zealot is the Little "Crazy" Mitchy choice.
Jasser has to go now and Crazy when his term is up.
Lets make a deal that we will not elect fools to Congress.
Our beliefs have nothing to do with this! You have to profile in order to have Law Enforcement - or else why do we have laws that are written & published? If the enemy does not wear any uniform that sets them apart from the innocent civilians in society you are left with behavior, as a determinant to identify your enemies, as enemies. Why is it ok for a government to profile an enemy, and yet defy ordinary citizens from doing the same? Government officials demonize the enemies, label the enemy as a negative entity, in order to incite the public to do their will - WAR, CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, & THEIR BELIEFS, ARE ENACTED ON US - THE IGNORANT - TO ENACT THEIR (POLITICIANS) BELIEFS!
So I was walking down the street and watched a muslim guy cross the street so he wouldn't have to go near the group of young black men on the corner who were busy keeping an distrustful eye on the white cops driving by in their squad car who were following a truck full of latinos that were trying to drive to work at the 9/11 construction zone blown up by a muslim extremist.
I hate to say it but profiling is an everyday part of our culture made possible by people perpetuating their stereotypes. It's never going to change so just accept it and move on.
