Police chief killed, 4 officers hurt, suspect and woman found dead after NH drug bust

Four police officers were wounded and one was killed during a drug investigation in Greenland, N.H. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

Updated at 5:41 a.m. ET: GREENLAND, N.H. -- The body of a man suspected of killing a New Hampshire police chief and wounding four other officers during a drug raid has been found in a house along with that of an unidentified woman, an official said Friday.

Attorney General Michael Delaney told reporters a police robot was sent inside the house at around 2 a.m. Friday following a standoff. It detected the bodies of suspect Cullen Mutrie and the woman, said by NBC News sources to be Mutrie's girlfriend. Delaney said both died of gunshot wounds.

Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, who was due to retire in less than two weeks, was killed Thursday evening when he and other officers entered the house during a drug raid.

Two officers from other communities were shot in the chest and were in intensive care early Friday. Two others were treated and released.

'Sacrificed his life'
The shooting has devastated the town of 3,500 near the seacoast that had just seven police officers, including Maloney, 48.

"In those final days, he sacrificed his life in public service as a law enforcement officer in New Hampshire," Delaney said early Friday.

Maloney had 26 years of experience in law enforcement, the last 12 as chief of the Greenland department.

During the standoff, officials brought in an armored car "like a tank" with a battering ram, according to an NBC News correspondent at the location.

Police patrolled the area armed with machine guns. Air space was shut down and homes in the area were evacuated. Before the end of the standoff, it was said that the town's schools would be closed Friday, because law enforcement officers were using the elementary school as a staging area.

Delaney earlier told a news conference that "law enforcement officers responded to 517 Post Road and ... were conducting a drug investigation. They entered the home at that time and they encountered an armed subject."

"The armed subject shot rounds at the officers...," he continued. "The officers that were wounded are receiving treatment for their gunshot wounds at a local hospital."

More police officers being killed despite drop in violent crime

Detective Scott Kukesh, 33, a 10-year veteran of the Newmarket police department, was in intensive care awaiting surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest; and Detective Jeremiah Murphy, 34, a seven-year veteran of the Rochester police department, was in intensive care after surgery for a gunshot wound to the chest.

Detective Gregory Turner, 32, a six-year veteran of the Dover police department, was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and released; Detective Eric Kulberg, 31, a seven-year veteran of the University of New Hampshire police department, was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm and released.

2 Coast Guard members shot to death in Alaska

Neighbors told the station that police had been called to the house before.

"It's been known for sometime that something's been going on at that house. It's just a matter of time. When you see lights on at 4 o'clock in the morning and you see vehicles coming in and out and you have cameras mounted on their porch looking out to see people coming in...," one neighbor told NBC Boston.

Law enforcement agencies from surrounding towns such as Rye, Portsmouth, and Exeter, New Hampshire, went to Greenland to help during the standoff.

"We're in crisis mode," said Karen Anderson, town administer, as the siege continued.

Surprise party for chief's retirement
John Penacho, chairman of the town's Board of Selectman, said Maloney was married with children.

"It's a blow to all of us. You're stunned. It's New Hampshire, it's a small town," he said. "We're stunned. I mean all of us. It's an unbelievable situation."

Jacqueline DeFreze, who lives a half-mile down the road from the house where the shooting happened, said she was devastated by reports that the chief had been shot.

She had planned to attend a surprise party for his retirement.

"I'm a wreck. He was just the greatest guy," said DeFreze, a fourth-grade teacher in nearby Rye. "He's kind-hearted, always visible in the community."

Gov. John Lynch was at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where the officers were taken. He asked residents to pray for the injured officers and Maloney's family.

"My thoughts and prayers and those of my wife, Susan, are with the family of Chief Michael Maloney. Chief Maloney's unwavering courage and commitment to protecting others serves as an example to us all," he said.

It has been confirmed that it was Chief Maloney, who was killed. Just 8 days short of retirement. RIP.

Truly a shame. I heard some guy named Eddie the kid likes cop killers. He celebrates the deaths of America's police men. People like that are scum. I wonder which country is better than America and would accept wanna be cop killers. I would certainly donate a hundred bucks to send him their. Hopefully it is Atlantis.

Interesting to see how many people involved in the drug business are behaving as it they're part of an army, an ideological movement they're willing to die for. And I can hardly blame them for that in view of how aggressive and draconian the "war" on drugs have become.
I was talking to a judge who told me it's gotten so bad that now if your parents have been convicted for possession of marihuana, for example, their children will be unable to get college grants and scholarships.
This whole thing has now become personal. It's almost as nasty as the healthcare debate where a lot of Republicans would rather see people go without it than helping provide that most basic service.
What surprises me is how robotic and inhuman the police have become in enforcing drug laws. Are these people completely unable to think for themselves?
How can Americans put up with this nonsense and the politicians who push for it?

When your kid gets killed next, blame your @!$%#ing idiotic constitution for putting firearms in the hands of criminals.

Guns kill people just like a fork makes some fat! If someone kills with a car you want to remove all the cars? What about using a rope to strangle someone, you want to ban rope too? Grow up. If someone wants to kill someone there isn't anything that you can take from them to stop it. Hell you can use your bare hands! unless you want to outlaw them also.

Topcat, since there are various drugs that are illegal to possess, sell or use; by definition, anyone participating in one of those actions is committing a criminal act and is a criminal. Now, they may also be a doctor, lawyer, politician or entertainer.

They should just make the drugs legal and tax them for whatever civic project a locality wants, much like the current "sin" tax on tobacco and alcohol used to fun museums and sports arenas.

Very interesting development - especially for those of you yelling SCUM!

This "drug dealer", if he is the same Cullen Mutrie in this article - Worked for the Hamptom Falls fire dept. and went to college to study paramedicine, so he was most likely a paramedic with the fire department. A life saver....

I do have to wonder if he was selling weed....

This is not your bottom-feeding meth cooker here...

Just goes to show... things are rarely "black and white" - and that IS a double entendre.

Cops come busting in nowadays like an army in a war zone. Its not right... Police state situation, and citizens are going to react to that. The drug war is a failure and causes more harm than good. It is militarizing our local police forces and creating criminals.

Strength, i can respect your views on weed, but the fact is, at this time its against the law to sell any illegal drug, so when police know of someone selling illegal drugs, its their JOB to ARREST the dealer, I dont care if its the POTUS, if hes selling dope he gets arrested. This guy being a firefighter does not take him out of the SCUMBAG catagory, HE SHOT 4 PEOPLE DOING THEIR JOB, I just re-read your post and i have come to the opinion you are a F**KIN IDIOT

FatCat Did you give any actual thought to your post? Or do you just routinely spout of inanities unrelated in any way, shape or form to the subject at hand?

This man died doing his job; he was trying to protect the people he served. Is there violence in society? Yes. Is violence or has it ever been a purely American phenomenon - no; in fact if you were to seriously and honestly study the rest of the world in virtually any time period you might reference, what you would find is that the levels of violence; the lack of man's inhumanity to man being evidenced anywhere in the world would be greater than that which was to be found in America during the parallel time period. The world has always had horror and tragedy and despicable people and things happening in it - and always will.

What bothers me about this death is if he had on a bullet proof vest how did he get mortally wounded? AND if he wasn't wearing a "bullet proof" vest why not?

In this day and age wouldn't it be police department protocol that under such circumstances a bullet proof vest is mandatory and not an option?

Just did some more poking around on the "interwebs" and found that the guy had a serious steroids issue. Back in 2007, police went to his home to cofiscate firearms after a domestic assault charge, and they found and also confiscated steroids, and a scale and baggies. In court, the judge advised him that he should recant his "guilty" plea on the domestic assault charges because it would affect his ability to become a fireman, and he was in school for paramedicine. So the courts gave him a charge of "civil disobedience". Flash forward to Thursday... The guy did finally get his job with the fire department. Why in GOD'S name - did this man continue with the drug thing? Being a steroid salesman and a fireman just dont go together! Beyond bizarre. Can't make this stuff up.

One last mind-boggling thing. We all generally associate firemen and policemen closely together. They both show up on the scene, and they work closely together.

When reading this, we automatically create an image in our head of a hardened gangster type of guy, the kind covered in tattoos, and a long history with law enforcement. A shiftless guy, someone who would be breaking into your house, and generally not a functional member of society. Yet here, we have a fireman doing this... total cognitive dissonance.

Police take down 100s, if not 1000s of drug dealers and users every day - without incident. But corner one of their own (and yes, fireman isnt a police man, but close enough).. and look out.

I had my door kicked in by state police and sheriffs deputies on Christmas eve,2004 at 11:45 pm, was dragged out of bed in only my underwear, was beaten all the way to my front porch, handcuffed, put in the middle of the road, pepper sprayed and kicked in the ribs multiple times and taken to jail. My crime? NONE! They hit the wrong house and when they realized what they did they charged me with assault on a police officer and obstruction of justice. I was aquitted by a jury 45 seconds after the jury got the case. I now have a beautiful new home and plenty of $ in my ira. These cop thugs are out of control with this kicking in doors sh!t.

Why, of course! Legalize drugs and this will all go away!!! I work with the aftermath of children who are the victims of drug use by their "parents" (term used very loosely). In most cases, there was no police action, but the brains of these kids are pretty much scrambled all the same. Some because mom was using while pregnant, some because the family "culture" has left them confused about much of the world. When these children grow up their lives are still going to be dependent on others. This is what we have when drugs are not yet legal. So by all means, let's make the circumstances better by legalizing them.

Johnny, your post proved Bigmonsterman's point quite well. Most people aren't emotionally mature enough to handle the responsibility of gun ownership. Dagoose, the old guns don't kill people argument is old, be original. The argument is pointless when guns + drug dealers= five people shot. Of course this guy probably had it illegally but every day we read in the paper about someone who owned a gun legally who decided to kill a person or some people. Just today there's an article about someone killing three people in cracker barrel because his wife told him she was leaving him. This @!$%# is almost unbelievable. Wish they'd tell people more about the victims too, all we hear about is the @!$%# who killed them and maybe the name and ages of the people he killed.

Police are supposed to enforce the laws put into place by the Congress or legislatures of their state. Don't like that drugs are illegal? Then it is up to politicans to change the laws, not the police to just decide they aren't going to enforce this one or that one. To those who want drug possession and sale to be legal, what are YOU doing about it? This is an election year, the one time politicans might actually listen to what the citizens are saying. Are YOU working to legalize, say, medical marijuana? Or anything else? Or are you just sitting behind your computer spouting "Legalize this, Legalize that"? Have you written to or called your representative in government about what you want to see done?

This man lost his life enforcing a law that was in place. He didn't write the law, he may not have even agreed with it, we don't know. But he did take an oath to uphold the laws, all of them, and he died trying to do this. He didn't take his oath saying "I will uphold only the laws I agree with." It is up to the voting public to change the laws.

Sarcasticus - seeing this first-hand, you should have a better handle on the WHOLE picture. The drug laws criminalize people. People who use, often do so because they are attempting to "feel better", escape a miserable situation. Yes, it does harm children. So does alcohol. And remember, we tried that prohibition quite some time ago, and it made the situation WORSE. Substance abuse is a mental health issue. If you criminalize the drug, you make it EASIER for the wrong people to get their hands on it (young adults), and the habit begins there. And then they are associating with criminal elements to get the drug, who can then introduce them to worse things like cocaine, heroin, meth.... Put the most abused but least damaging drug - cannabis - in the liquor stores, heavily regulated, and age restricted, and watch the drug abuse issue become much less prevalent, and the crime associated with it will also drop precipitously. The answer for the real nasty ones - like meth - are not as easy.... but criminalizing users is not good. In cases of chronic abuse with heroin, meth, etc where neglect is evident - then children need to be removed from the home, just as would be done with a physically abusive parent, or an incompetent parent. But ripping families apart with criminal sentencing and jail time is just as damaging, and often moreso than the original issue. Especially in the case of cannabis users, or even hard drug users - criminalizing them means reducing their chances of ever recovering, because job discrimination results. That job application question of "have you ever been charged with a felony" is one that causes an individual, even a rehabilitated, free person, to be forever punished for a crime. Their time is never truly served, and they are in a sense, all given a life-sentence. Sarcasticus, if you are working in a field where you see children that are harmed by a broken home life, then you really need to step back and see the whole ugly picture. I understand there are some real pieces of work out there with kids. These pieces would find other ways to continue to be pieces - even if drugs weren't in the picture. But for those that are young and foolish, the draconian drug laws entrap them in a vicious cycle, and children pay the price. Just remember - its all shades of grey. Avoid that black and white thinking. Emotional decisions can be some of the worst kind.

sarcasticus,

Yes, it sounds counterintuitive, but legalizing drugs would largely make this go away. That cop wouldn't be dead today if they hadn't raided the dude's house. Were drugs legal, there wouldn't have been a reason to raid his house. See how that works?

Secondly, police cannot act like paramilitary thugs breaking down people's doors and then turn around and act surprised when one in a thousand fights back and shoots their ass. While this is tragic, and I am by no means advocating shooting police, it is difficult for me to feel empathy here.

Marty - theres a very active push-back on the "war on drugs". And there are conscientious dissenters among the ranks. Men in blue that go out of their way to avoid harassing and arresting drug users, and low-level drug sellers (pot).

Your take on blindly following orders is a moral issue that has been pondered and written about by ancient philosophers. When does a man lose his humanity? When he abdicates all conscience and blindly follows the orders of a superior, regardless of how heinous those orders may be. I give you Nazi Germany as a case in point. Men blindly followed horrific orders - and at the Nuremburg Trials, their only defense that shocked the world was "I was just following orders" - as if that one statement could wipe out the horrors of the mountains of emaciated corpses they created.

It takes great courage, and often comes at a great price, to refuse to carry out an order that you find morally questionable. It can lead to job loss, alienation, harassment, impoverishment, imprisonment, and death. But it has also been great men who nutted up and said NO, that changed things for the better.

And there are active organizations out there fighting the war on drugs. I refer you to www.leap.cc Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. A very active organization of active and retired law enforcement professionals that speak out against prohibition. And of course, the long-lived and very active NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). There are many many large, active groups, and a constant battle to stop this madness (endless War on a thing, that can never be won).

If more small town leaders woulld follow suit our small towns would not turn into mini inner city clones. I am thrilled the suspects are no longer breathing air. They are the only ones that got what they deserved, it is ashame those officers had to go in first...if the robot is deemed a sworn part of their unit, as the dog units are, it could have been dispatched, and if harmed.....blow that place off its foundation and call it a day, and all living officers go home. The problem as I see it, is the law, or lack of it. If I could write the law it would be.....if you are caught breaking and entering, holding up a store or any crime with a gun...byebye life in prison...no Parole...ever...gone.

If you are caught selling illegal/stolen firearms...same thing life in prison..no parole...gone.

This would make the price of stolen firearms go sky high, thus the rif raf could not even afford them.

We need to get the guns out of the rif rat that steal from us to buy more guns and drugs. It is an endless cycle that won' stop until ultra stiff punishment is put in place.

These brave officers probably weren't wearing BP vests as this is a small town with, I would imagine, a small budget and those vests are expensive. If this is the case, I hope they can get some funds to protect the other officers.

If they did have vests on, there is ammo out there that will circumvent the vests with ease and I would bet that dope dealers have plenty of it anymore.

My prayers for the fallen chief and his family and for a complete recovery for the ones wounded.

Hopefully the police got to take these two down and the scumbag didn't shoot himself.

Guns kill people. The simplicity of it all is just common sense. No gun, no bullet, no dead man. Those are just the facts. Same can be said for any instance involving a gun whether it was used in self-defense or at the range. If zimmerman just wasnt carrying a gun..Travon would still be alive. Gun owners are like wives. You just cant make any sense of them. If it was red..they would tell you NO. Its pink. They just dont get it.

Oh well, the more they buy guns more dumb people die. So be it. And dont even start saying that someone has to pull the trigger? Ask Remington, Glock, if its true. Its been scientifically proven thats guns can go off without the trigger being pulled. So that argument is lame and unjust.

Once again a case being tried on this site. We just never learn to sit back and read, and wait out the facts. We are so impatient to spew our own bias when a story is posted.

I too have been that innocent person sleeping in bed when cops came knocking on the door with guns out. It was a wrong address. It shocked me, but the cops in the past had come to my home under different ownership on many occasions, and so they knew the circumstances there that were very bad. My doctor neighbor was attempting to kill his wife and neighbor by shooting up the neighborhood and the wrong address was given by my neighbor in sheer panic.

The number of men hurt and the police chief dead is strange. ???? I am left with many questions.

Also on an entirely different note, but relevant today with city costs, was his retirement at 48. That is really young and the costs for that city to pay his retirement and hire another police chief would be substantial. BTW, I worked for a large city in benefits, so I know what I am speaking of and why the number jumped out at me.

Sad. Very sad.

Thoughts and prayers to this mans family, and to the whole community.

Not to drive away from the tradegy or take away from this mans sacrifice, but do not use the argument, people kill people not guns. Anyone who sits there and says if a car kills someone, do we ban cars is a moron. The sole purpose of a gun is to kill, the only reason it exists.

The constituion states guns should be allowed - you want to know what life was like when that rule existsted? completely different. There is no need for guns other than ones to hunt with, sorry.

Can't wait for the legalization of drugs and the realization that it won't solve anything at all.

I'm basically for legalization of drugs because why should the government not make money off it?

Tax it, incorporate it, drive the small makers out of business, make it crappy, then make it in China (well, again, but with legalized shipping and import). Then tell me all about how legalization was the best thing evah!

    @ strength in numbers

Shutting down a meth lab is hardly the same thing as the Nurenburg Trials after WWII. I personally wouldn't want it to be okay for an individual officer to be authorized to disregard any law (enacted into law by the legislature or Congress). What if an officer felt that sex with a child was okay? Or hanging your black neighbor from a tree was okay? It is the way that individual officer feels, so according to you the officer doesn't need to act within the law and should not arrest the offender. Definitely there needs to be some modification of the drug laws, what is in place is mostly legislation enacted in the 1920's era. And I personally don't consider marijuana to be in the same league with crack or meth. That being said, until the PEOPLE force the elected officals to do what the PEOPLE want, the decision to enforce the law is not up to the individual officer.

THIS IS AN ELECTION YEAR, ITS OUR CHANCE TO LET THE ELECTED OFFICALS KNOW WHAT WE THE PEOPLE WANT. If you want to change the drug laws, get involved. Let the people running for office know what you want. If they don't agree, don't vote for them. That's the ultimate equalizer, YOUR VOTE!

I also wanted to add a few things. I extend my sorrows to these injured officers and to the family of the killed officer. To thedid not wear vests or what ever. Trust me I'm sure they did wear vests, most likey may have even had kevlar helmets also. There are many guns that will shoot right through a vest, many of them will also go right through the front and out the back. Another thing is vests need to be replaced every so many years as over time the kevlar can become brittle and many officers also don't wear a trauma plate or the correct panels for the vest. A vest is not a bullet proof vest it is a ballistic vest which also has several classes (type of rounds they will stop) The other thing is ther are a couple parts of these vests.....one being the carrier(vest) and two being the panel or ballistic panel. I do believe they recommend replacing the panels every 5 years.

Now why did these cops not do like the cops in AZ did when SWAT swarmed Jose Guerena (USMC 2 tour Iraq) home while his wife and one of his children were present. They fired over 70 rounds striking Mr. Guerena 23 times. Why did they hit his house? Marijuana which they found absolutely nothing.

The cops acknowledged that not only did he not fire, the safety on his gun was still activated when he was killed. Guerena had no prior criminal record, and the police found nothing illegal in his home. After ushering out his wife and son, the police refused to allow paramedics to access Guerena for more than hour, leaving the young father to bleed to death, alone, in his own home. So who do you think investigated the cops involved? Well of course the cops, in which they determined no wrong doing. The cops were shooting within a second or two of entering his house. So god forbid should you have a gun while in your house and the cops hit it. Even if you are just walking down the hall with it, and the cops may also be hitting the wrong house or maybe got some info from a "confidential informant". The cops also would not release any the search warrants and police affidavits and may never according to Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.

Yeah the cops are just doing their job. Tell that to 68 yr. old Eurie Stamps Sr. (grandfather) who was shot down by Framingham, MA SWAT while exercising a warrent. Guess what, the suspect for whom the warrent was issued was in police custody at the time.

How many more innocent people need to be killed, how many more kids lives need to be ruined for even being in a car where a seed was found on the floor or a roach under the seat before they get that the WAR DOES NOT WORK. Guess what..in the countries where drugs have been decriminalized the use of hard drugs went down along with crime.

"In those final days, he sacrificed his life in public service as a law enforcement officer in New Hampshire," Delaney said early Friday.

Some flowery words to say that the police were ill-prepared for the situation.

Maloney had 26 years of experience in law enforcement,

    And no body armour?

Armoured car "like a tank" with battering rams, shut down airspace, evacuated houses, schools seized for staging areas, mobile command posts, robots, police patrols with machine guns, etc. Sounds like a local re-enactment of Ruby Ridge or Waco - go in under-prepared and over-react.

How does one person get the drop and take out several police officers short of lack of intelligence (not necessarily of the individual kind but of the reconnaissance kind) of the police?

Esam (#1.4): So, you think it's nonsense for law enforcement to enforce drug laws? I imagine you might change your mind a little bit if you ever spend some time around children who have been severely affected by drug use or dealings in their own homes. What's nonsense is the drug abuse in the first place.

StrengthInNumbers: The details you uncovered about Murtie are interesting. However, there are bad apples in every bunch, including firemen and police officers. Seems to me that he was a ticking time bomb and the fact that he worked for the fire department would never have changed that. Hardened gang bangers should not be the only people that come to mind, there are major drug dealers in every walk of life that can look rather unassuming.

Stoops2Conquer (#1.15) and Robert (#1.22): Bullet proof vests can only protect so much, designed to cover RIGHT where the heart is. It's not the only fatal spot in the chest area, and bullets coming in at an angle can make a huge difference too. Those vests can only do so much; it doesn't mean they weren't wearing any, but I'd like to hear those details too.

JM (#1.29): Police "bust in" because of the element of surprise, it gives less reaction time and they are not as likely to be injured or killed that way.

Jim Owens (#1.43): It was a small-town police department with only seven officers. Not so unusual for the chief to be involved, they needed everyone. So sad though, that close to his retirement!

Many people out there talk about legalizing and regulating illicit drugs. That is already done with prescription drugs and alcohol, yet the abuse of those is on the rise and people die as a result every day. Marijuana used for medical reasons is also legalized and regulated in some states (not by federal law though), and that privilege is also abused. The implications of legalizing every hard-core drug out there would be disastrous for everyone. There is no easy solution to the problem, but combatting it is better than rolling over and letting it happen.

Retiring at 48...........this is why the govt keeps trying to EXPAND it self and BUY votes from any target victims groups it can create to continue to help itself grow at TAX PAYERS EXPENSE...........and the idiots keep voting for them.......an iq of 115 should be mandatory to vote along with proof you pay taxes or have served your country or are over 60.

Ray lets look at your comment:

As for you who advocate legalizing drugs, did you ever stop to thing what the fall out would be? Many more Children without a functioning brain for openers.

WRONG- kids can get drugs EASIER than they can get jack daniels or beer, legalization and regulation work better than illegal and if you mean prego women would be doing more drugs than they currently do---WRONG again---alcohol causes birth issues too and it is legal. the number of drug users would stay about the same if it were legal after an initial spike but look at cigarettes b/c now more kids smoke weed than cigs and cigs are legal but the propaganda on cigs WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!we could use propaganda on legal drugs to make them uncool too, i dont advocate drug use but i dont advocate making using drugs illegal either because it does more harm than good like dead idiots in ohio today.

More deadly traffic wrecks from weak minded idiots high on coke or meth or some other $hit.

coke and meth IMPROVE concentration and make more alert drivers........and any one driving badly or causes a wreck SOBER or not should be charged and prosecuted---frankly i dont get a damned if you are a sober bad driver---you deserve to charged as if you were drunk.......why does being sober make having a wreck ok? if you cant drive and wreck i say lock your idiot no driving as up sober or not. so old ass no drivers would no longer get a pass.

More killings because more people would be wanting more drugs and no money to pay for them.

the iq of this comment is astounding: if legal drugs would be CHEAPER and i dont see alot of killings for jack daniels occurring and the economy would pick up for a new industry.

Far more downside to this than any upside you could present. Your idea just doesn't wash. Not at all. It's not called "DOPE" for nothing.

I think some dope may help you.

Well there is only really one person running that gets it. This is also a person who does not work for the corporations.

Oh and good thing we got a CIC who was going to change things. Who does Obama hire for Director Of Energy but Dr. Steven Chu who prior to his appointment was working at Lawrence Berkeley Lab and received a 500 million dollar grant from BP. Well who does Chu Director Of Energy hire as his under boss but BP's chief scientist Steven Koonin. So in effect BP is running our Dept. Of Energy and folks wonder how BP got away with so much during the Oil Spill. This is just one of those things that Obama has "changed". Oh Obama has a plan and his plan does not involve you or I, well atleast not in a good way.

You want "Change" then vote for a man who has not "Changed" his view in decades and is not a person that spent Miliions sealing(hiding) almost all evidence of his past or a man that has killed millions of jobs and sent them over seas.

Vote Ron Paul. Don't listen to what the 'News'(so called) says about him. Goto his website and his policy his right there for you to read yourself. A man that was a soldier and knows what war is about and like. A man that was and is a doctor and knows what health care is. A man that has kept the same or similar views through the years and has not flip flopped in his voting to suit the corporations needs. A man that voted against both the Patriot Act and NDAA 2012.

          Esam,

It's almost as nasty as the healthcare debate where a lot of Republicans would rather see people go without it than helping provide that most basic service.

That is a lie, the Rep have given there own plans on health care that would insure just as many people as Obama's does without the price tag to those of us that are already strapped because of the federal taxes we pay. I don't see how all of you Libs think it is ok for only 47% of Americans to pay taxes so 53% don't have to, since when has America become this lazy. I think we put you to work if you get welfare building roads, as an assistant in the medical field or just picking fruit in the fields. see this way we could tighten up our borders.

Also we should legalize all drugs, do you know that country's where heroin is legal that use has actually gone down because since it is legal the older users don't have to get younger people too use so they can get a break on what it cost them. Plus the government could tax it and thus ease the tax burden on those that pay taxes. It would also get rid of the cartels if it was legal why would you need to smuggle it. Of course our government only likes too take your freedoms away not give you more.

I know this was off topic. RIP Chief

Wow, just how many states, now give pensions with only 25 years service? (ohio does also).

Who in their right mind thought that is sustainable?

In the real world, IF your workplace still gives 'pensions', you might retire at a certain year of service, but you can't collect til you're 55 or older.

Locally in our small town of 5,000 , we have 2 getting ready to retire. They're 44 and 45 years old. And of course will turn around and get rehired by the city..sighhhh.

Show me ANY private business that can afford that perk ! Dare ya.

My prayers of course to this gentleman, and ANY person killed for some senseless reason !

            Hey BIGMONSTERMAN,

You said "I still maintain that civilians should never be allowed to have guns."

So, you still maintain that the USA should be just like Mexico eh? Where only the government and outlaws have guns? I have 2 words for "you". Sicarios and Creel. There's a video "somewhere" showing just how weak the government becomes once civilians lose their weapons, and the outlaws go where they will and kill whomever opposes them...unchecked.

You do realize that the only think keeping America sleeping safe at night is the fact that we KNOW we are safe enough, in the way that the playing field is level? If a killer comes in to shoot, he/she knows they may also be shot. It's the only deterrent that works, unless there is a cop standing on every porch all the time. Off duty cops are civilians. They won't be having guns in their homes if you get your wish. They will be threatened. "Gold or lead?" will be the question they will each be asked. And in turn, they would be executed, or become corrupt, if you have it your way.

Let's be clear. The officers were wearing vests, not much protection against an AR-15. The loser in question has a long history of both violence and convictions, so the 'drug' is a non-issue. The people making this a forum to legalize drugs or otherwise push their agenda are absolute losers.

I live 2 miles from where this occurred, and I can tell you without question the appreciation I have for Chief Maloney and the duties they took upon themselves to make this a better place. You should all wish to have people in your community who are that selfless. This Cullen guy will rot in hell, as deserved, period.

Take your agendas elsewhere, we are talking about a human being killed in trying to make the community better. You should all hope for that.

It certainly wasn't clear by the article. Regardless, the victims were still under-prepared and then over-reacted to the situation, which is typical for police. They flounder around "huffing and puffing" trying to convince the locals that they have the situation under control. All it really does is draw attention to how poorly they handled the situation. It only "cost" one officer his life and three others trips to the ERs/ORs to perform a small drug raid.

was talking to a judge who told me it's gotten so bad that now if your parents have been convicted for possession of marihuana, for example, their children will be unable to get college grants and scholarships.

So you can buy weed but not save for your kid's education? What's next? sitting in a park DEMANDING that the taxpayers pick up the cost of that education?

Guess what? I have no problem with that theory.

                    R. Scalzo quote

Guess what? I have no problem with that theory

                    R. Can you not read?? Who said anything about such person can not afford an education? What happens is if a person(kid) or even their parents get caught of possession, even one joint that they or even their children can not get a scholarship or grant. Many state schools will also not let a convicted person admittance to the school due to being convicted of a felony.

So let's so you are a high scchool senior getting ready to go to a state college with a full or partial scholarship(living at home). At this time your mother is dying or suffering from Cancer and chronic wasting due to chemo. She decides to smoke a joint so she does not suffer as much and can actually eat something instead of puking for days on end. But then she gets caught. Well what happens is you loose your scholarship and may also not be admitted to that or any state college. Nevermind that SWAT also most likely kicked down your door, threw your mother on the floor then arrested her.

Right, because it was the war on drugs that made the person kill a police officer... I am all for the legalization of drugs (with regulations of course), but lets put blame where it belongs here. A person chose to shoot at police officers rather than turning himself in for breaking the law, and as a result 3 people are dead.

Call me crazy, but I don't think this killer would have been a well adjusted, calm member of society if drugs had been legal. Unless you are implying the illegal drugs made him do it....

What's even more odd about this story is the officer that had a bullet penetrate his skin and the chief that's dead. Did they think they were some sort of cowboys just going in with no vest? I doubt the suspects were suing any weapons capable of penetrating standard vests. Unless it was a .22 and they were using old vests which a lot of times were poorly constructed and a .22 could 'get in between the weave'. Even then the velocity after penetrating a vest and being a .22 it couldn't kill someone. The criminals would have to have used rifle rounds either 5.53mm or 7.62mm for example, to penetrate the vest.

Something is fishy about this story, or the cops were being idiots and I find it hard to feel bad for a dead idiot. It doesn't excuse the criminals by any means so don't think I'm picking their side.

suggesting people kill themselves is your answer to people wanting an end to a lost war on drugs... I would hope the mods ban you for suggesting such as less has resulted in bans . ( but this is Newsvine, they favor psychotic nuts like you )

But the drug problem would be ended in just a few short weeks. The smarter ones would stop. Drug addicts ARE killing themselves, and (like the story above) and innocent people with them. Maybe your mind would be changed if a druggie shot up your family.

The loss of life is tragic and my thoughts go out to the families of those involved.

But with that said, this wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for the spectacularly failed and costly drug war and drug prohibition. Because of drug prohibition we have gangs and organized crime in every city. Because of the drug prohibition Mexican drug cartels are more powerful than ever and American funds pour into that country making violent criminals rich. Because of the drug war thousands upon thousands of people have died due to the activity surrounding illegal drug trafficking. The laws do more damage and cause more death than all of the drugs combined.

There needs to be a change in our drug policies. One would think after 40+ years of failure and over a trillion dollars wasted someone in Washington D.C. would wise up. But, noooooo, we are stuck with these same useless policies that have succeeded in only creating a huge black market and killing thousands.

And, TexasLaw, your comment about "druggies" being "useless wastes of space" just goes to show you have no clue as to what you are talking about. While I agree there are SOME people that are hopeless when it comes to drug addiction, I don't think we should just throw away people because they might do drugs or have serious problems with drug addiction. It's obvious from your statements your attitude is biased and you quickly lump all drug users into one category as useless unproductive members of society. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

And I wonder if you would include in your "useless" category people who drink alcohol and smoke tobacco, two of the most deadliest drugs that are legal in the U.S. which kills thousands every year?

TexasLaw really has no idea what he is talking about. Ive know and know many people who smoke or have smoked weed (including my parents, who quite a long time ago, put at one point in time could be called "pot heads") As with any drug you will always have people who use it and abuse it. But there are still plenty of people who do just fine.

There needs to be a change in our drug policies.

Or maybe simply a change in how these city officers are trained. Local police officers use many techniques to avoid getting shot when entering any building. Many here were surprised to learn they even have Shields that are long enough to protect most of the body.

Many would wonder why it took so long to identify the drug the cops had previously collected - from July to January.

There are many people in society who use drugs, illegal or legal, that are productive members of society and are NOT "useless wastes of space". And those people with serious drug addictions that are causing themselves and others damage they need to be treated as medical patients and not as criminals. Its comments like TexasLaw's that perpetuates hate and basically calls for a witch hunt.

Most drugs are "marked" in some way. However, steroids are usually not marked. I cant guess as to how they go about identifying drugs, but it prolly just takes longer when tis drug thats not very common on the street??

Yes, this statement is very true.

The little sister's death is tragic and never should have happened. But, the problem with your attitude towards weed and pot smokers is misguided. You are taking out your anger and sorrow on pot and everyone who smokes weed when you really should be focusing your anger on the individual that took the little girl's life. You are stereotyping all pot smokers based on this one tragic instance. So are you going to categorize ALL drinkers of alcohol as not being upstanding citizens because some make the choice to drive drunk and kill someone?

Well I got back to late to defend myself. To hell with it.

One thing that I do take offense to and actually ticks me off is this bull@!$%# claim that what I had to say, perpetuates hate and basically calls for a witch hunt, it's called my opinion and view which you don't have to agree with. Most people are sick and tired of all the damn violence that comes WITH drugs. Gangs fighting for drug turf, people killing for drugs, people killin someone for shorting them a couple bucks on a drug deal. What good does it do?

Where are the good parts? You have upstanding people who do work everyday, who do manage to do something good during the day. But thats how it starts for alot of people, then they start losing everything slowly as the drug takes a stronger hold of them. Some MIGHT keep it hidden and manage to keep their daily doings, but alot don't. And even if they keep it hidden, it takes a toll on their families, wives, kids... arguments, fights, stealing. It's more then just themselves they screw up.

I love how a few of you are more worried about my comment and opinion about druggies, then you are with the fact those druggies killed someones dad, brother, son... for nothing other than doing their jobs. Nice to see what's most important too some people.

Makes me wonder what kind of stuff a few of you are into... I've never seen a non drug user get so defensive of drug users. Not saying it can't happen but it just seems very very un-ordinary.

I know there are some folks who will have a joint once in a while and don't engage in other criminal activity. But I don't defend people who use drugs because they are breaking the law. I don't walk around punching people in the face because I disagree with assault laws. I don't make illegal copies of movies and music because I disagree with copyright laws. Disagreeing with a law does not give someone an excuse to break it, no matter how much of an upstanding citizen they are otherwise. It just makes them look like self-absorbed people who have a problem with authority.

Sam, I come from a family of drug addicts and I couldn't disagree with you more. Drugs are not ok. They destroy lives--not just the lives of the users, but the lives of everyone around them. Holiday preparations that start with discussions of who is going to be in or out of jail or rehab or too violent to manage to sit through dinner are not a way to live. Drugs suck. They are not harmless recreation. Reading a book or fishing--that's harmless recreation.

My prayers go out to the family of the fallen officer and to all those wounded--and to the family of the addict/dealer who need to put their lives back together.

Or you can tell Richard Bramson, Carl Sagan and Steve Jobs what wastes of space they were. Hard as you may try, things are seldom black and white. There are always infinite shades of gray. Try putting some nuance in your thinking and you might wise up some day.

Some drug users are extremely productive and some are drags on society. I tend to think they would have been either drugs or not.

IF you want to come off as intelligent and look like you have a clue as to what you are talking about, the first step is to stop stereotyping all Texans as those you see in movies. I am 24, I have been drunk 4 times in my life. The last time I had a drink was over 5 months ago and that was 2 beers at my birthday.

Having a drink or two doesn't make it my drug, doesn't make me a redneck alcoholic. Besides you're throwing redneck around... Half the people who grow food for this country, transport it to towns all over the US, lay the roads down, build those houses and buildings... All are rednecks in some form or fashion. But I know I know... Saying Redneck is just a way for you to try and insult someone because you have no better way to argue. It's alright... Someone here definitely has their head up their ass and I promise you it isn't this Alcoholic Texan.

RIP to the officer. But as Sensible stated. A RAID for STEROIDS???? This doesn't condone killing any human being, but honestly, the police should not have been there in the first place.

Educate yourselves about steroids, people. I'd rather help my child recover from heroin addiction than see him on 'roids. They change the person's personality in a way few other drugs do. And they don't do much for your looks, either. A guy puffed out on 'roids looks as bad as a woman whose face has been lifted up past her eyebrows.

He was doing his job. He was on the drug task force. All of the police officers hurt cam from different stations. They were serving a search warrant when they were open fired on. It wasn't a choice and it is about as insensitive as you can get to make these asinine comments.

RIP Chief Maloney - my thoughts and prayers are with your family. Thank you for the 26 years of service to your community.

A horrifically crude reminder of how fragile life is, especially, for those who protect and serve. G*d Bless the Maloney family and all of the Officers wounded, during what would have been a routine police matter.

Whatever provocation, no matter the depth of the crime, this fabric of this small southern N.H. community has forever been changed. Senseless, pointless and utterly tragic, my prayers and support to all of the families mourning, grieving and crying over the loss of Chief Maloney and his subordinate Officers in the hospital.

You have paid the ultimate sacrifice, Chief Maloney. May you rest in eternal peace.

yea thats right . like the woman some years back in china ,played sick one day so while everyone was out working but her she stole a dress from another who scrimped and saved for it, she got 1 year for stealing the dress and LIFE for ENVY! thats the kind of law i want in America. how bout we put coke and crack and meth on every streetlamp. i bet in a matter of weeks no more drug problem. no more mothers getting robbed or fathers for their money to buy dope. if they are that hooked they be dead in no time they will camp out and give up everything for it, including their own lives. Then the rest of you perfect people can get on with your pure lives

What about all the people that the drug dealers kill, if not with violence, with bad dope. What about the children born with drug addiction that die a slow and painful death from withdrawl? Offer up a better solution that doesn't involve tax payers having to support the low life addicts in prison/ jail, or paying their medical bills (obamacare/ medicaid) then I will listen. America is losing the drug war, and I believe that if we REALLY cracked down it would get better. maybe China does have it right.

What happened to the Indians was not right, but their is no use crying about it and being hateful now. There is nothing that can be done to undo it. it wasn't the people that are alive today, and the ones responsible can answer to a higher power. Same thing with the black slaves. I get sick of hearing about it and I am black.

Many of the same countries also treat drug addiction as a disease, providing FREE health care...

I'm glad those cops got shot. The war on drugs is the domestic counterpart of the international war on terror. It's an attempt to occupy people. On the domestic front, it opens the door for the creation of the police state, and internationally it's used to justify foreign occupations. American law enforcement is literally creating a reign of terror on American citizens, all in the name of law and order.

Eddie The Kid - First, your elation at the death and injuries of these officers is despicable and shows you to be the low life that you are. With regard to your assertion that law enforcement is creating a police state and their mission is to occupy people I call BS. The vast majority of law abiding citizens in the United States never have any dealings with the police unless they are the victims of crime.

I assume that in your version of Utopia, all would be drug dealers could ply their trade with zero government interference, despite how many peoples lives they ruined.

Hey now, get away from your computer, don't you have to go beat your drum down by your tent on the town green?

Ha! I don't believe that killing a person is ever justified under any circumstances, but this incident comes damn close. If the police chief had not been conducting a "drug investigation", he'd still be alive, and he would deserve life for opting not to enforce this country's backward Puritan drug laws, a lot more than his backup officers deserve it for being lucky enough to just get winged.

I hope more of this country's Second-Amendment-loving citizens will shoot at those who try to arrest them for insignificant vice crimes; ideally I'd prefer those shots would wound and cripple rather than kill, so that the victims can have some time to think about the consequences of their commitment to jack-booted enforcement of unjust laws, but the fact that gunshot wounds are lethal is just one more reason that you should all be very proud of yourselves for putting them into the hands of every aggressive, testosterone-addled idiot who can look up the Bill of Rights on Wikipedia and find out that he's legally allowed to stomp around with a big metal penis of death to wave at everyone who ticks him off.

All of you people who are praying for the victims are insulting millions of innocent, would-never-hurt-a-fly people (aka "liberal deadbeats") who rot in jail because of tyrants like this head cop, having been caught with one bag of weed and having five years of their life disappear into some state-run hell hole so that the clueless conservative sacks of crap who run this country can be satisfied that they've done the will of God and country. Villainy and hypocrisy wear your bible and your flag as masks, morons; your blissful refusal to face reality kills millions of people every year, and I'm a little bit glad every time one of those people is on your side.

WOW! I don't condone violence. But as time passes and nothing changes in regards to drug prohibition, I have noticed that people are starting to get very fed up and angry to the point of advocating violence.

Our law makers better wake the f**k up soon or they are going to cause the downfall of this once great country.

so your just gonna lump us all together with that lunatic Sal? we may be called "mass holes" but most of us don't act like it.... think before u speak next time will ya...

were still dealing with several police shootings in mass right now...condolences to the chief of police's family there i hope they can pull through this tough time.

plus all officers do wear bullet proof vest under their uniform but it is only rated for handguns up to shotguns we don't even know what kind of weapon was used and this is a small town in the sense of the word i don't think they actually have bullet proof shields because they see no need for them and the department is only 6 officers strong plus the chief(it wouldn't make sense to the town financially)

Will to Power, you are an A$$.

You need a reading comprehension course and then study the Bill of Rights. You will be amazed at what they actually state. But then, maybe you need a big metal penis since you cannot locate your real one.

And since the criminals are breaking at least one current law, what makes you think they would not break another one and own an illegal weapon?

The drug lords and their associates build their stations not in a big town but sell or distribute to a big town; a small town is easy to control and easy to be overlooked, like this one.

Condolences and prayers go to the policemen and their family and friends.

Since the infamous Trayvon case put so much emphasis on race, I want to know what race the killer was. I am pretty sure the officer was white.

We heard quite a few Somalian or Ethopian families moved to small towns in the Northeast and almost ruined some by going on welfare. More facts, please.

Greenland is mostly, if not all, white, and the name Cullen Mutrie is Anglo. The Somalians I think tend to live in Maine where they ruin the local area as you mention.

Just allow the crime to run rampart and destroy the neighborhood. the residents themselves wanted them out. The public didn't want them and there was NO PARAMILITARY RAID. In fact they probably took less precautions because he's known to them.

This simply points out the fact that drug dealers are scum and increased means are needed to weed them out.

They may be a hero to losers who have no other dreams than to sit in a park and DEMAND the country take care of their every need with no output from them. Those days are over. The reaction of this dealer shows what the poison he was selling is capable of by the users.

I don't know about you. This isn't about drug prohibition. We're not talking about some kid with a bag of weed selling it to his pals. We're talking about a cold-blooded killer who would do anything to carry on with his criminal activity. If the crime weren't drugs, you can bet it would be something worse.

Perhaps you read a different (version) article than I did. I didn't read in the article were the perp greeted the officers at the door and asked them to come in. And although this was probably set up after the shooting, taking over a school for a command center and deplying a tank with a battering ram sounds pretty "paramilitary-ish" to me.

I also didn't read where this perp was "DEMAND(ing) the country take care of (his) every need". My understanding is that the dude was a firefighter. Again, maybe you know other details from another article.

This whole incident IS about prohibition. Without that the officers wouldn't have had a reason to be there. Please don't confuse my statements, I'm not advocating for anarchy. What I'm saying is that our current laws and the aura of the "war on drugs" allows police departments to arm police officers as if they were in a battlefield and encourages them to treat the citizenry as if we were enemy combatants. Therefore they should not be surprised when in the procecution of a "war" someone is bound to shoot back. I never glorified the perp. I've never advocated for killing cops.

If you are comfortable with living under oppresive law enforcement agencies armed to the teeth with heavy weaponery and tanks, knock yourself out. I am not and therefore I am speaking out.

It wasn't a raid, as you are being led to believe. The officers were simply carrying out a search warrant, as Cullen was arrested in July for having 7 guns and a LOT of steroids. He was indited by the NH grand jury and the officers were carrying out the warrant. No one was trying to be a "hero", they were doing their jobs.

The area where he lives is not at all a high traffic area, it's well known that he has parties there that rage until the early morning hours. Everyone knows what goes on there, it's not like its normal for people to be partying and coming and going at all hours. You have no idea what you are talking about.

(By now you all should know what they say, "assumption is the mother of all 'screw ups' ". Assume NOTHING, law enforcement personnel, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, or you may very well pay with your dear, precious lives !!!) - RC

(I think may times the appropriate policy to follow is to have a very visible police van parked outside, with a LAAW pointed at the residence. Think about this, SERIOUSLY, if you really want to head off future trouble.)

(If someone is determined to commit "suicide by cop", you ABSOLUTELY MUST be ready to accommodate them, or else risk paying with your own precious lives. Please understand that at this point these people basically constitute domestic terrorists, and they are ALWAYS prepared to pay with their own lives IN THE PROCESS OF COMMITTING SUICIDE!) - RC

They need to be just as careful for the domestic violence calls, too. They should wear all the gear available to them.

In all seriousness, it is exactly your attitude that makes people want to shoot you a$$holes.

This sounds like a David Koresh replay. "Officials brought in an armored car 'like a tank' with a battering ram to the scene." And we all know that could have been handled better in hindsight. What gives, Einsteins?

Ronster369, you see what's really going on. Welcome to the United Police States of America. When you have cops running around with machine guns, tanks, armored vehicle carriers, and robots, you're living in a police state. Sieg Heil! Heil Hitler! The Gestapo is alive and well in the United States of America.
