Updated at 3:27 p.m. ET -- Oklahoma prosecutors filed murder and hate-crime charges on Friday against two men arrested in the Good Friday shootings that left three people dead and two wounded in a predominantly black neighborhood in Tulsa.
Jake Carl England, 19, and Alvin Lee Watts, 31, each were charged with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of shooting with intent to kill and five counts of malicious harassment, according to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office. The harassment counts allege the victims, all of whom were black, were targeted because of their race.
Police say the men, who were arrested Sunday after a two-day manhunt, appeared to have chosen their victims at random.
Under state law, first-degree murder is punishable by death or life in prison.
"Filing charges is the first step to obtain justice for the victims and their families," Doug Drummond, Tulsa County’s first assistant district attorney, said in a statement. “This is a tragic and senseless crime. Our office is committed to holding those responsible accountable for their actions."
He said prosecutors will not comment on the specific evidence in the case.
Police: 2 suspects confess in Tulsa shooting rampage
Police have said the accused men are white and did not know the victims. One witness said a gunman simply pulled his truck to the side of the street and asked for directions before opening fire.
According to police documents, England spoke with detectives after his arrest and confessed to driving the car while Watts shot two of the victims. England also said he shot three people, and told detectives where the gun used was located, according to documents.
Those killed in the shooting spree were identified as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Terrell Allen, 31. All died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Deon Tucker, 44, and David Hall, 46, were also shot, but survived.
Shortly before the April 6 shootings, England had commented on his Facebook page that two years had passed since his father, Carl, was killed by a black man, to whom he referred with a racial slur, according to the Tulsa World.

No, it was deemed to be justifiable homicide since the father and a friend beat the black guy with a baseball bat and then followed him back to his apartment to continue the beating. That's when he grabbed his gun and shot the father.

The father of a man who was arrested in connection with a shooting spree that left three people dead Friday was killed in self-defense, prosecutors said Monday.
"The Tulsa County District Attorney's Office ruled the April 5, 2010, shooting death of Carl England justifiable homicide and declined to file homicide charges against Pernell Demond Jefferson," said Susan Witt of the District Attorney's Office in a news release Tuesday.
England and Jefferson got into an altercation at the Comanche Park Apartments the day England was killed, police told the Tulsa World after the slaying. England's daughter reportedly had called him for help after her boyfriend and Jefferson got into a fight.
Police said the boyfriend hit Jefferson with a baseball bat and that Jefferson left to retrieve a gun. After he returned, England arrived and was shot in the chest.
Jefferson is charged with attempted first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction in the case. A jury trial is scheduled for May 7.
In January 2008, Jefferson pleaded guilty to counts of feloniously pointing a firearm and domestic assault and battery in the presence of a child, involving offenses that are alleged to have occurred in December 2007.
He received concurrent six-year and one-year suspended sentences, records show.
In May 2010, Tulsa County District Judge William Kellough revoked Jefferson's probation in that 2007 case and sentenced him to six years in prison.
He is an inmate at the Key Correctional Center in Fort Supply, records show.

Yeah that sure doesn't sound like self defense to me. It's one thing if Bonos_rama were correct but this article does not say Jefferson was followed back to his house. It says Jefferson came back to someone else's apartment with a gun.
This is NOT a stand your ground situation. If you are able to get away from your attacker you don't go back to the scene with a deadly weapon. That only implies that you intend to do some damage yourself out of revenge, not self defense! If this is all true then the jury or judge in the case got it wrong.
.... what's more I hope those individuals that let Jefferson off feel some guilt out of this racist rampage. Sure, Jake England CHOSE to go postal on random innocent people. IF anything, he should have focused solely on Jefferson. So he wasn't proving anything except that he is a stupid, murderous racist who doesn't deserve any sympathy.
But even if it were just his father's killer who died last week, the people who refused to send Jefferson to jail for something that was so obviously 2nd degree murder have a small % of that blood on their hands. The feeling of vengeance would not have set England off if justice had been served in the first place!

This is why there needs to be free counseling and people who go thru any tragedy need to have a free outlet to relieve thier troubled minds. I feel sorry for England and I am sure the rest of his life will be hell. I'm sure his father is not proud of what he did. No one deserves to die. i didn't see such expressions of sympathy for the 17 years old black youth that accompanied malvo on his shooting rampage where most victims were white. this fatherless kid, by all accounts, had no criminal background (and we know if he had, it would have been greatly publicized) and had looked to malvo as mentor and hero for years. this kid got a life sentence and he was not even the trigger man.

Klone may or not be back to answer, but I'll take a shot. Yes, the motivation of killers often counts in murder cases (and other crimes). A person who kills -- while defending his property/robbing a bank/was in a drunken brawl/murdering because he is a serial killer -- are all seen differently by the legal system, especially as regards sentencing. Mindset is frequently used as an aggravating or mitigating factor.
Hate crimes, where one person targets another solely because of race/religion/sexual orientation, etc. are particularly corrosive to our society because they ripple out, and are likely to cause reprisal killings. And, yes, if a black woman kills a white man just because she hates white men, then hate crime guidelines should come into play.

Danno, if a black woman kills a man because he is white, then obviously that is a hate crime. If she kills him when he breaks into her house that is self defense (or manslaughter in some states). If you kill someone for the simple reason of their skin color, sexual orientation, religion, etc, that is a hate crime. Whether a hate crime has been committed must be determined by the court. They will want to know the relationship between the victim and the accused. They will want to know the circumstances behind the encounter. Simply killing someone of a different race is not enough to prosecute for a hate crime. In this case, driving around shooting random black people is a hate crime, since the shooter made clear indications he wanted n$@@&*s to pay.
So why do we need hate crime designations for certain murders? Because people who kill based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith, etc, create a substantial amount of friction in our multi-cultural society - more so than a random killing does. It is a different type of crime, which can lead to polarizations in our communities that can lead to much deeper and violent problems.

While the term "Hate Crime" is somewhate redundant and inflammitory, it is used legally in different contexts to differentiate the motive or psychological mindset which caused the act . Perhaps the term should be "with predjudice" or something, but it denotes a certain level of criminal behavior. First of all, "Hate crimes," whether they involve murder or not may be prosecuted Federally because they involve denying the victim of their constitutional rights. In many States, perhaps all (I'm not certain) the designation demmands the death penalty when the victim(s) are murdered. Hate indicates that premeditation is involved.
I don't understand what they were thinking- if he waited two years he could have shot the guy that killed his dad, now their ass is in a sling and he will be walking around free and their victims had nothing to do with it. Not that I am recommending revenge. (wink)

It's a hate crime because they only shot at black people because they were black, not because of any other reason. Adding 'hate crime' to the charges increases the possible penalty if convicted. Are we all not for a harsher penalty on these idiots?
The "hate crime" law was made for similar reasons to why there are distinctions made and differing punishments for "capital murder" , "first-degree murder", "second-degree murder", "manslaughter" etc. etc.
It helps the punishment to fit the crime. And, yes, I believe someone who is so deluded to think it is okay to kill someone just because of their ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation is a special piece of work- just like someone who would torture someone before they killed them.
Our constitution seeks to promote freedom and the pursuit of happiness for EVERYONE, including minorities. This is a precious part of our nation's history. The "hate crime" law helps to send a message that this type of action is totally unacceptable in a fair and just society.

"Hate crime" distinction creates divisions in our society, by creating protected classes. Murder is murder. Murderers should be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. The politics of divisiveness strengthens the government's control over the lives of the citizens. Government is not interested in solving problems, if there were fewer problems, there would be less demand for the government to "do something". Government covets control of the citizen, and takes control through more laws and fewer freedoms.

These guys deserve to be tried under the hate crime laws their actions were unacceptable. However, what about the recent black on white hate crimes? Why are the race baiters silent? Where is Jesse and Al? Dr. King marched for equal rights in a non-violent way for everyone regardless of color or ethnic origin. For every example of a black being charged with a hate crime (which wouldn't be many), I can show you 10 examples of whites being charged with hate crimes to appease the racist black community, even though whites commit far fewer crimes against blacks.
Blacks don't get charged with hate crimes nearly as much because it doesn't fit the politically correct agenda being shoved down our throats by the NAACP, the likes of Sharpton, the ACLU and the black community in general which just can't accept that many of their ilk are racist.
Sure there are still some white racists around, but the vast majority of the white community isn't, and wants to move past the days of racial tension, but the blacks won't let us, since every time there is a white on black crime they scream racism. Blacks are the ones continuing to perpetuate racial division in this country.
You feel the vast majority of whites are not racist (by your operational defition of the word) but many of blacks are racist. Exactly how do you arrive at that conclusion? Personal observation? Double blind survey? Scatterpoint graph? The contents of stuff you pulled from you ass? How exactly did you make this obviously unbiased assessment?

Dave, you are so blindly ignorant that it's sad. In order for a crime to make it into the database that spits out "hate crime" statistics, it must first be charged as a hate crime. Sadly, the vast majority of black on white crime is never charged as hate crimes because we don't dare piss off the black community and must cut them some slack for historical injustices, therefore, it appears that there are more white on black "hate crimes", when, in fact, there are far more black on white "hate crimes".
Open your eyes and quit allowing yourself to be fooled by phony statistics. It is a FACT, proven by crime statistics, that blacks commit more crimes against whites than whites against blacks. Now, given this FACT, why is it that more "hate crime" charges are brought against whites?

Apparently, you don't pay much attention to what's going on today. Blacks can attack whites while yelling, "this is for Trayvon, honkie", and they don't get charged with a hate crime. Blacks can set a white kid on fire while calling him cracker, etc., and they don't get charged with a hate crime (and yes, both these happened recently). The five blacks in Tennessee who raped, tortured, burned and murdered those two white kids weren't charged with hate crimes.

Case 1: The attack on Dallas Watts, I assume? May not be what it appeared to be at first. Among other things, one of the members of the gang was white.
Case 2: Is this the Kansas City case? If so, I'm somewhat familiar with it. Last I heard, the two suspects haven't even been identified. Kind of hard to convict of a hate crime if you don't have the perps. If you've heard of an arrest and want to show where they are running away from pursuing hate crime legislation in the face of good evidence, please direct me to the story and I'll take a look at it.
Case 3: The murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. I am very familiar with it. It was a gruesome double torture-murder. Death penalties and life imprisonment have been handed out for the perps. There was no evidence it was racially motivated though, and actual evidence against it. You can say it's all a conspiracy that hate crime wasn't added to the lengthy list of charges, but I will need more than your assertion or a screed from Michelle Malkin to convince me.

Hate crime is just words made up by some racist idiots and what it means that if a White person kills a black it's a hate crime, but if a black kills a White person it's not as bad. In Knoxville a couple years ago a gang of black punks killed a young White couple, but not before they raped and tortured the young lady and tortured and killed her boyfriend. Was this considered a hate crime ? Hell no, it was just murder. You tell me things are the same for blacks as it is for Whites. All B.S. While I understand your angst, you may be missing the point. It's not enough that a crime is committed by someone of one race on someone else of another race, it has to be that someone of one race commits a crime on another solely because of their race, or nationality. Perhaps in your example, it should have been classified a hate crime, but there was no evidence that the gang attacked the couple merely because they were white. Legally, it's very hard to convict on the charge of being a hate crime. If the motive was robbery or rape, then it would be hard to demonstrate that the motive was race.
This with or without the hate crime is 1st degree murder and Oklahoma has the death penalty. I am glad the hate crime was attached because with what is going on with Martin white people do need to send a message to the Country. We, as white people are not going to abide with it (race crimes) either, no matter which way that hate is directed.

The father of the accused was the victim of a race hate crime and the culprit is due out of jail in 2014. I can understand his anger though tragic, the system failed him and his family. Where was Obama and Eric Holder? And no updates, NONE, about the 50 year old white Sanford FL man beaten with hammers by two black men citing "trayvon." What, this is not a hate crime?
