California fish processor recalls yellowfin tuna 'scrape' linked to salmonella in sushi

California fish processor Moon Marine has voluntarily recalled 58,828 pounds of a frozen raw yellowfin tuna used in sushi and sashimi after it was linked to a "multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly," the Food and Drug Administration announced Friday evening.

The government said an outbreak of salmonella sickened more than 100 people in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

The Food and Drug Administration reported Friday that 116 illnesses have been reported, including 12 people who have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Moon Marine USA Corp. of Cupertino, Calif., also known as MMI, is voluntarily recalling the fish labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA when it was sold to grocery stores and restaurants and is scraped off the fish bones and looks like a ground product.

It is used most commonly in spicy tuna rolls, the Chicago Tribune reported.

As of Friday, illness had been reported these states and the District of Columbia: Alabama (2), Arkansas (1), Connecticut (5), District of Columbia (2), Florida (1), As Georgia (5), Illinois (10), Louisiana (2), Maryland (11), Massachusetts (8), Mississippi (1), Missouri (2), New Jersey (7), New York (24), North Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (5), Rhode Island (5), South Carolina (3), Texas (3), Virginia (5), and Wisconsin (12).

The FDA said there is likely a 30-day lag between when people become sick and when cases are reported to health officials.

Consumers who think they might have become ill from eating possibly contaminated raw Nakaochi Scrape should consult their physicians, the FDA said.

One lesson in all these scares...If you can't identify it as a whole part of a known entity, DON'T eat it!

Pink Slime. Fish slime. Why do we need the Federal Food Admin at all?

Salmonella and E Coli out-breaks are now so common, why bother having any regulatory agencies that do nothing but suck up tax payer money. Once again, Big Government exist for the protection of big industries.

Really? And how widespread do you think these things would be without them. If you want to talk about protected businesses, lets get on the topic of those who still get paid by the consumers and tax payers when they screw up their product.

You'll never eliminate outbreaks of food-born illnesses altogether, no matter how good regulations and regulators are. Think of how widespread these things would get with out quickly identifying an outbreak and the source.

Well said. Having been in the nursing profession I still subscribe to the FDA alerts. Makes my hair stand on end at times. That agency has prevented so many deaths. Not only from food borne illnesses, but faulty medical supplies and contaminated pharmaceuticals.

Fat Cat you are so ignorant of what that agency does. It protects the consumer. No company likes to recall faulty products.

It is beyond me how people can enjoy eating raw fish - previously frozen at that ! Aside from salmonella, there are loads of worms and worm eggs in raw fish, alive and well. Bon appetit !

Eating raw or undercooked fish or meats, raw eggs, unpasteurized dairy, sprouts, etc. can be dangerous to your health, especially if you are a small child, elderly, taking immunosuppressive drugs, or ill.

However, even though fresh cooked fish may have a better texture than previously frozen, the freezing process does kill much of the bacteria and dangerous organisms which may be in the fish. So if you want rare meat or rare fish, choose whole fillets (not ground) which has been previously frozen.

    ttmadison:

The immediate harm or danger of Salmonella, Shigella or E Coli is not the bacteria themselves but the toxins they produce as the by-product of their metabolism. It is these toxins that cause the bleeding and ulcers in the GI tract, leading to diarrhea.

The toxins from Salmonella, Shigella and E Coli are heat labile meaning the toxin protein will deform and become innocuous after heated up to about 85 degrees Celcius. However, the toxins can be preserved at low temperature such as freezing without loosing much of their potency.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

And the idiots who eat raw fish will one day wake with a belly ache and give birth to who knows what.

I eat sushi regularly, and have never had an issue. The Japanese have eaten this for hundreds of years, and yet they survived. I have, however, gotten food poisoning from a hamburger place.

Why don't you tell me what food you view to be "not for idiots" so I can link to you past recall information on that? Most likely, it will be a food linked with several cancers and other quite bad health effects, such as elevated risk of colon cancers and diabetes, and that's just when it's done right!

Agreed with boom. Clearly your ill informed Viewer. Raw fish foods are some of the healthiest foods on the planet. People who eat fish, rice, and other simple foods tend to live longer than those with other diets, it's a scientific fact. I eat raw fish all the time and somehow I'm still here, never sick from it. But, like boom, I have gotten sick from processed beef products. To each his own, but get off the high (or rather low) horse already...

people should start suing these people for large amounts of money so they make sure they sell quality food. Never mind after the fact. They sit back and watch and see if they get away with it. when people complain then and only then do they recall.scumbags

Again it's the industry self regulating itself failing. We need the Department of Commerce to regulate and inspect the food supply of this country because in the past few years there have been one failure after another of our meat, vegetables, and now fish. Since the food industry can't do it then the government must. Other governments inspect their food with better results than what we have.

Probably because other governments put agencies like the FDA higher on the list of priority and give them adequate funding. I am amazed at what these inspectors do with so little resources.

If you really want to be amazed, check out exactly where your food comes from the next time you go shopping. Not where it is distributed. What country. Read the labels if it is canned or frozen. Even canned tuna. It may have an American name brand but if you read closely it usually is from Asia.

I wonder if Moon Marine Inc. is part of the Unification Church..ie the Moonie..it's a sham organization. The Moonie uses the church as a front for numerous profitable business and sometime align themselve with the Heritage Foundation. They own True World Seafoods..which supplies most of the fish to sushi restaurants. They also own Kahr Firearms..I guess Jesus wants you to be rich and armed to the teeth!!

I think I got sick from this two weeks ago. I had all the symptoms, and had eaten sushi the day before I got ill. I don't recommend salmonella to anybody. I can speak ill of the food supply since I don't live in one of the states where it's a crime to do so. "Food slander" will land you in jail.

I thought that this national outbreak might have been tied to the pickled ginger or the wasabi paste, but see that it had another source. I didn't know "pink fish slime" was in my food.
