Updated at 6:38 p.m. ET: A long and wide swath of the central U.S. is in a severe storm danger zone on Sunday, following twisters that killed at least five people and caused damage across the Midwest on Saturday.
By early Sunday afternoon, at least two tornadoes reportedly briefly touched down in Nebraska. One caused damage to two buildings in Wheeler County. Oklahoma and Minnesota also each saw one suspected twister, though no damage was reported.
The areas "most likely" to see tornadoes on Sunday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said, are parts of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"Severe storms are also possible in a band from Illinois and Missouri southward into Arkansas, northwest Louisiana and east Texas," the service added.
Weather.com severe weather expert Greg Forbes assigned a 70 percent chance for tornadoes in parts of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin on Sunday.
Saturday saw 122 reports of tornadoes in the central plains, the Storm Prediction Center noted. Not all have been confirmed, and some might be the same twister reported in a nearby area, but the number of reports is unusually high.
Below's a look at the deaths, injuries and damage by state.
Oklahoma: In Woodward, a town of 12,000, five people were killed and 29 injured, five critically. Some 8,000 were without power, while 89 homes and 13 businesses were destroyed.
Lightning had apparently disabled the signal tower for the town's tornado sirens, Reuters cited Mayor Roscoe Hill as saying.
Two young sisters and an adult died at a mobile home park, while an adult and another young girl were killed just outside the city limits. [Earlier versions of this story reported that three young sisters were killed in the mobile home park].
"This thing took us by surprise," Hill said. "It's kind of overwhelming."
"On the west part of town it looks pretty bad," he added. "We still have search and rescue people out. We have people who are still missing."
One survivor emerged from a twisted SUV that had been tossed along the side of a road.
"The guy had blood coming down his face," the Associated Press quoted Marty Logan as saying.
Logan also saw people walking down the street covered in blood when he went to a hard-hit neighborhood. "It was scary, because I knew it was after midnight and a lot of people were in bed."

In April 1947, Woodward was hit by a tornado that still ranks as the deadliest in Oklahoma history, with 116 people killed, according to the National Weather Service.
Kansas: A twister churned through parts of Wichita, where Brandon Redmond, a meteorologist with the Severe Weather Alert Team, said it passed over his vehicle and lifted it two feet off the ground.
"The tornado literally formed over our vehicle," he told Reuters. "I've never been that scared in my life. ... We had power flashes all around us and debris circulating all around the vehicle, sheet metal, parts of a roof, plywood."
No injuries were reported but damage includes the McConnell Air Force Base, a Boeing plant, other industrial properties and a mobile home park.
"I didn't think it was that bad until I walked down my street and everything is gone," the Associated Press quoted Yvonne Tucker as saying from her destroyed mobile home park. "I don't know what to do. I don't know where to go. I've seen it on TV, but when it happens to you it is unreal.
"I just feel lost."
Tornadoes also raced through north-central Kansas. Five homes in rural Saline County were damaged, but the tornado avoided towns and no one was hurt.
Gov. Sam Brownback on Sunday declared a state of disaster emergency. Some 11,000 people were without power, most in Wichita.
Kansas saw 97 tornado reports and about 40 percent of the state was under a tornado warning at one time or another on Saturday, Brownback noted.

Iowa:A hospital in Creston was damaged and two people were injured by a suspected twister. Patients were moved to nearby hospitals and most of the town of 7,500 people lost power.
In Thurman, a town of 250, homes were missing walls and roofs, while sidewalks and streets were covered with toppled trees.
An estimated 75 to 90 percent of the town's buildings and homes were damaged or destroyed, and yet only minor injuries were reported.
A small Iowa town was destroyed by weekend storms; Boston marathon runners look forward to 91-degree running weather. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports.
Nebraska: An apparent tornado near Oxford took a roof off a farm house and toppled a grain bin but no injuries or other serious damage in the area were reported.
Tornadoes briefly touched down earlier in Nebraska's Nuckolls County and Thayer County.
Areas in the state also saw baseball-sized hail.
The U.S. tornado season started early this year, with twisters already blamed for 62 deaths in 2012 in the Midwest and South, raising concerns that this year would be a repeat of 2011, the deadliest tornado year in nearly a century.
Some 550 people died in tornadoes last year, including 316 killed in an April outbreak in five Southern states, and 161 people in Joplin, Missouri, the following month.
The Storm Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service, had warned of Saturday's developing system.

Director Russ Schneider said it was just the second time in U.S. history that the center issued a high-risk warning more than 24 hours in advance. The first was in April 2006, when nearly 100 tornadoes tore across the Southeast, killing a dozen people and damaging more than 1,000 homes in Tennessee.
Earlier warnings are now possible because storm modeling and technology have improved, said Chris Vaccaro, a spokesman for the National Weather Service. In the past, people often have had only minutes of warning when a siren went off.
The National Weather Service also announced last month that it would start using terms like "mass devastation," "unsurvivable" and "catastrophic" in tornado warnings in an effort to get more people to take heed.

It looks as though noaa was spot on. It's too bad that mr grover, the gop, and the rushbo don't have high regard for noaa's scientific opinion on weather and climate. Especially when it comes to co2 as the cause for global warming. But i tell you, mr grover, the gop, & the rushbo hasn't offered any root cause(s) for the rising planet temperatures. They are not weather & climate scientists. I believe noaa. They were spot on this time.
You know, after an incident that has caused widespread destruction and human death, though thankfully limited on the death part, why don't you take a vacation from the politics?

People tend to think that we are separate from nature, above it, masters of it. Stuff like this proves we aren't any of those at all. My heart goes out to folks caught in these violent storms.
Politicians have been trying to bend and twist science if not completely ignoring it for their own selfish purposes. Religious leaders discount science because it tends to prove long-cherished beliefs as myths (and NO, I'm not saying God isn't real. I DO believe in Him just as I believe He gave us brains to use for purposes beyond filling our cranial cavities.) That being said, I'll trust scientific proof any day of the week over political rhetoric, chosen ignorance, and superstition.

Yes The Obamanation appointed Steven Chu to Secretary for US Dept. of Energy, who also prior to his appointment had received a $500 million grant from BP. After his appointment Chu then hires Steven Koonin who at the time of Chu receiving grant from BP (while Chu was at Lawrence Berkley Lab) was chief scientist for BP. So ineffect we have BP running the US Dept of Energy. You may also remember that it was Chu and Obamanation that gave the ok for the loan to Solyndra. A company that Chu had ties to while working at U of CA Berkley. They ok'ed the grant even after strong warning from about eveyone, even Price Waterhouse(the leading accounting firm in the US). So back to Global warning. It was then Obamanation that Oked BP to continue to us Corexit in unheard of levels and poison the Gulf, killing massive numbers of phytoplankton along with mammels, fish, etc. Phytoplankton is the number one life that on Earth that fights global warming and converts thousands time more co2 to oxygen.

Nicodemus - Fossil records in Kansas show that it was once a sea bed. That is from plate shifts, not sure how you relate that to global warming. The beds of limestone in Kansas do show some volcanic records but that is not a slow warming period. It is fantasy to compare humans to any previous animals that have gone extinct.

C;ear;y you haven't studied said fossil record or you'd know the answer to that. Plate shift had nothing to do with it, at the time the planet was an average of 5 degrees warmer than present day. Then again average oxygen content of the atmosphere was also 23%. And guess what, no people to effect the change. Do a bit more research. Do you really think we are immune to the kinds of forces that wiped the dinosaurs and many other forms from the earth? Arrogant much? The tornadoes , earth quakes, tsunami's, should show you otherwise. We just as susceptible to the planets extremes as any other. These extremes are historically the norm, more so than the temperate lull between them we have enjoyed throughout most of human history.

i will never be able to understand why people choose to stay in their mobile homes when they know these storms are killers, children keep dying in these storms thanks to the stupidity of the parents..I pray for all of the victims..

I believe that one lives in a mobile homes because other choices are no longer available. How many trailer parks in the Mid-West have community storm cellars? (That is not a rhetorical question, some of the commentators on NV must know...)
I'm sure some of them would like to somehow get out of the mobile homes/mobile home parks, but unfortunately, alot of those people can't afford to just pick up and move... Alot of people aren't as lucky as you and i, meaning those who live in a house, or actually own a house...(i'm assuming that you own a house, since you're obviously speaking about mobile home parks/trailers in a negative way).

Maybe the mobile home is all those people can afford,I know that is why we lived in one for a long time.
Also the community storm shelter is a very good idea,but how is it paid for? I helped build storm cellars in Texas in the 1940s when I was a small boy.Even with the family doing all the work of digging a shelter,materials for the roof,doors,and vent system were very expensive then,probably more so today.
Also in parts of Texas now,you can't did deep enough for an effective shelter,the hole fills with salt water about three feet down,pumps and the power to run them add to the cost of the shelter.
What an insensitive thing to say. Most mobile home parks have a community storm shelter. However, if you knew how to read, you would know that some of sirens weren't working and that the ones that did went off 3 minutes prior to the tornado hitting. Also, people who live in mobile homes generally don't do so out of choice, they do so out of a lack of money. Living in a mobile is much more responsible parenting than being homeless.

While I would never blame a victim, as a tornado alley resident for my entire life, I don't understand why ALL people in this region don't have NOAA weather radios. They aren't expensive and are battery operated. And they will sure as hell wake you up from a dead sleep if necessary. They really are the best defense for situations like this. The warnings are delivered faster and don't depend on electricity or the person being awake. Hell there is even a smart phone app that is about $5 that will do the same. I understand not being about to afford anything but a mobile home but I don't understand why people don't have these in their homes. A lot of times they are given away but governmental agencies because they are a very good warning device.
Before you call someone stupid, you should get your facts straight. Our area was told that the danger was over-That the storm coming had wind, hail, and rain, but was not the type to produce tornadoes. We were told just minutes before midnight that it was safe to go to bed. That's exactly what people did. When the tornado warning came we had 3 minutes to get to shelter...3 minutes...How many things can you accomplish in just 3 minutes from being awakened? Those "stupid" people in the mobile homes were running to their shelter when the tornado hit them. They were good people and they did not cause their children to die. How dare you put blame on people who are already suffering the worst imaginable loss? And we have a NOAA radio... Sometimes tornadoes form very quickly and this was a fast moving storm.
WHAT!!!!! The all knowing, all seeing, all powerful weather GODS made a mistake? Funding will become available from more sources, as the devastation increases! This is all about money and will continue to be! What you can do in three minutes is put your head between your knees and kiss your butt good bye! Good Luck!
Deb Eash, thank you for speaking so eloquently. 3 minutes is nothing especially with children to wake and to run too a shelter when it's dark and you're scared to death. I am also glad to see others sticking up for people who do live in mobile homes. Like others have said, money is usually the reason they must live in them but others like retired couples choose to live in them for the low maintenance even though they can well afford an apartment or home. We have a court across the street from us. All good people working hard and not stupid like so many like to assume and say they are. And the term trailer trash in reference to those who live in them is uncalled for as I have said before. We have had to run/drive to the church since we don't have a basement yet, that is just a block away. It takes time when you are being pelted with baseball size hail and 90mph winds and driving rain with children in tow. I am worried about this Summer weather to come since we are in tornado alley and have had them in our small town through the yrs. Prayers and thoughts for all who have been affected. I can only imagine the lost, frightened feeling of losing everything. We have had damage from tornadoes, hail and wind but not wiped out losing everything like some of these Souls have had happen to them. It's more than sad. Especially when people who don't have a clue make light of the situation and/or call those who were affected stupid or trash.
You're praying for all of the victims ???? They weren't victims, GOD deliberately took their lives...GOD knows all, and therefore HE knew that he was taking their lives and their homes.........so they MUST be with HIM, now....they are with HIM at peace and they don't need prayers.....

Kat would you move out of your house everytime the weatherman says you will get severe thunderstorms? These storms often come up at night people out in the midwest don't usually stay up to watch late night TV. They get up early for work. You did notice in the article mention of things like barns and other agricultural buildings. Of course we could all move in with you. Got the extra bedrooms because the shelters open after the tornado not before.

marshal...when you spray aerosols across the skies early in the day when the sun rays have already been striking the earth for several hours...and after the aerosols create a blanket...heat becomes trapped there under...does the heat build up or just maintained as if insulated?...temperatures can be manipulated this way...
Anyone who lives in tornado alley is thinking pretty highly of the Severe Storms Forecast Center today. When a big tornado is approaching, a 5 or 6 minute warning saves lives, lots of them. I think the advance alerts of big storms in the area got people's attention too. All the warnings in the world aren't worth much of some people are to stupid to pay attention to them. One thing about mobile homes though, every mobile home park should be required to have a safe structure or underground shelter available to the residents to use during an emergency. They aren't called "Tornado Targets" for nothing.

Tornado Magnet though catchy does not offer a decent explanation. A trail park concentrates a population into a small area. A trailer does not come equipped with a basement. A trailer is of flimsy construction because of weight and cost. A trailer park can be set-up with minimal cost, electrical, sewage, water, and roads being the obvious requirements, extras like a community centers and storm shelters not so much.

Apartment buildings are also a concentration of population into a small area, but they are still required to have certain lifesaving features. Smoke alarms, fire doors, fire escapes, etc. Considering the inherent danger of a trailer in a severe storm situation, a storm shelter isn't a "community center". It's the same kind of lifesaving measure that a smoke detecter is in an apartment building . It may be up to the individual towns or counties to require this when they license a trailer park, but I can't help but wonder how many deaths it will take before they get the message.

back in the 70's, i counted 16 funnel clouds from my balcony in one afternoon in oklahoma city. there have always been and always will be tornadoes in that part of the country, but man... 122 in one day? seems like things are rampin' up, to me.

Don't send things to the Red Cross, they charge people for the help they give. Either donate to the Salvation Army or call the local churches and send money. The churches help everyone in times of need not just their members.
I would bet that helping out through their web site is a possibility. Also they have a site where you can donate by texting on your cell phone and ten bucks is add to your bill.

Send cash, people. I think the confusion about costs comes from the fact that 20 dollars in cash is immediately useful whereas 20 dollars in canned peaches and soup costs significantly more to transport, manage, and distribute, and it might turn out to be not needed after all.
Or if you don't have cash, open up that extra room in your house and invite a newly homeless tornado victim to stay with you for a week or two while they try to piece their life back together.
I think part of the problem with people "not taking heed" to storms is the overuse of sirens & tornado warnings. I live in the midwest and everytime it rains, they flip on the sirens and declare a tornado warning (no not tornado watch - warning). That's not being cautious, that's crying wolf. Who isn't going to ignore them after awhile?
That is why the NWS is changing its terminology. I was up reading the warnings last night and for the ones that were only radar indicated tornadoes that was stated in the warning. However, when there was a large, confirmed tornado on the ground a tornado emergency was issued and it stated things like "Complete destruction likely" and "Life Threatening if above ground" and "Devastation will cause areas to unrecognizable to survivors" to make people realize they weren't playing around.
Monkey, I live in the upper Midwest and have never experienced our weather service cry wolf. Our weather radio announces watches and updates to warning when a tornado (funnels spotted or on the ground) or other threatening weather is happening and imminent to where we live. If you actually have "trained" people jumping the gun like that, it's time for a changing of the guard maybe. Just mho.
I have been fortunate, to not have experienced a tornado personally. I cannot imagine the terror as one nears. My thoughts and condolences for all those affected.

I think that you will find that the biggest cause of global warming is not CO2 but all of the concrete, asphalt buildings and bare fields where trees and grass once grew.
The thermal warming of these areas has changed the weather patterns. Thermal currents rising into the atmosphere act upon norm air movements.
Paul... good thought about deforestation and paving over the world, but consider CO2 for a moment. The world came equipped with a certain quantity of carbon. Over hundreds of millions or even a few billion years a lot of this carbon became sequestered in the form of hydrocarbons. Our carbon based economy is now reversing that process in a few short centuries. That can't be good. But as a bone to the CO2 deniers the wind swept plains west of the Mississippi were that way for a reason, long before the industrial revolution. It is just that global warming predicts in increase in storm activity and severity and this early outbreak in tornadoes just reenforces that prediction.

I understand that CO2 and other gasses are promoting global warming but it is the disruption of normal weather patterns by deforestation and large metropolitan ares that is causing an influx of warmer air from equatorial areas that is the main cause of warming in the northern climates.

A changing of Polarities will also make a mark with those who do not have any neurological disorders that have to deal with a mind. As for bringing many back into a state of balance; many Doctors will also start to prescribe heavier does of tranquilizers to thus calm a humanity; but to no avail will the sedatives be strong enough to relieve a distress and to also make a human functionally functional at the same time; thus causing a human to have more stress and upheavals in their lives.

These tornadoes are seasonal weather in the so called "Tornado Alley". Climate change or warming have nothing to do with their happening. OK, if people are religious nuts, it's cool to mock them, but not after storms destroy lives like it did yesterday. Personnaly, I believe in God, but not a literal following of the Bible. I believe man has "improved" it on occasion. Global warming is real, and man is a significant part of the problem. However, these storms in and of themselves don't prove global warming. It's proved by world-wide temperature increases over a period of years. For now, please focus your attention on the people suffering from these storms. Death and destruction aren't an excuse for scientific argument.
You had a good thought about focusing on the suffering and not scientific arguments until you said"Global warming is real, and man is a significant part of the problem." That statement about man as a significant partof the problem is guaranteed to foster a scientific argument. You should have quit while you were ahead.
Yesterday, the whole day the weather experts, e.g. NOAA, and the news channels have reported the dangerous of the stormy weather and the experts have told people to immediate respond. When something is expected coming, preparation is the most immediate response, such as spending a night in the basement and getting the emergency and food or going to the shelter if one's home is mobile.
Please do not ignore those experts' warning; take their warnings by heart and anticipate the problems.
Please spend an afternoon or evening or day in the basement with cellphone or go to the shelter.
