New Jersey child porn sweep brings 27 arrests, authorities say

More than two dozen people, including a township official, were arrested in a sweeping child porn investigation in New Jersey, officials said Tuesday.

The 27 arrested include a public works director in Morristown. Most of the suspects were charged with possession of child pornography; two were charged with distribution.

See the original story at NBCNewYork.com

"These people who create the demand for these images allow this industry to exist," State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said.

Officials say one of the men arrested lived in a home connected to a child-care facility.

Authorities say the investigation began in January. The first suspect was arrested March 1. Authorities say the 23-year-old man lived next to a child daycare center.

Another suspect allegedly took pornographic photos while sexually assaulting a child, officials said. Yet another was downloading pornographic images when detectives got a search warrant.

Detectives say they traced digital fingerprints from the images as they passed through cyberspace.

The arrests took place in 20 New Jersey towns. It wasn't known if any of the suspects had lawyers.

Totally agree that these people should be locked away. However, I don't agree with the philosophy that the demand is what is driving the supply. People are not producing more to meet the demand because those observing it are not to a significant point rewarding the producers. So, I think it's backward and the supply is driving the demand. The prevalence of child porn on the internet is driving more to become aware of such and viewers/users of those images. It's also creating a younger audience base.

This wouldn't matter much for helping children but the difference in goals changes depending on the driving forces. If you want to stop the child porn you need to focus a majority of resources on the supply chain vs. the demand chain. Reduce the supply and you reduce the demand and even more importantly you stop more children from being abused by the producers.

Does anyone ever ask what starts these people down this path and how to recognize those that are before they become addicted to this stuff? Is there any viable treatment? Or is locking them up after the fact the only current solution?

".....is locking them up after the fact the only current solution?"

NO....however, castration should be highly considered in their "court" decsion. This would eventually put a damper on their ludicrous activity.

Not my area of expertise, but yes, studies have been done and there are various factors leading to a child porn addiction, ranging from sexual exposure/abuse as a child to an addictive type of progression (a tolerance if you will) in building up the need for more and more extreme materials for arousal.

Contrary to popular beliefs there are treatments and some have been successful for reducing impulses and there is a difference in those who are producing and those who are viewing it online. Like most addictions one seldom speaks of "cures" but if someone doesn't re-offend the treatment is considered successful. There is also the area of teens sexting/emailing pics with other teens, which has in many states been treated as child porn.

Much like with illegal substances, the best strategy is prevention and stopping the cycle early on and if someone finds themselves struggling with this issue they should seek help asap.

Sounds like they are all over the age of 21. Why protect them by not showing their names? I rather see all their names printed out to the public.

Don't say they have their rights in courts..you arrested them so they are involved in it, a good attorney can get them off easy and we never will know who these perverts were! And they will just continue what they were doing more carefully.

Perhaps the death penalty for pedophiles would go a long way to reducing the incentive, at least it would reduce the long term incarceration cost to the tax payer assuming such cases don't get dragged on by lawyers for years.

Point is they are saying who was arrested..not saying not guilty or guilty in a court of law. People can be arrested for a DWI on Saturday night and have their name posted in their towns newspaper and they never went to court yet.

Not that I am anywhere near a supporter of this group of people and would personally like to see the child molesters making this stuff put away for life.

However, there is a difference from a child molester making these films with young children and an 18 or even 21 year old who has pictures of a 16 year old girlfriend and those two groups are different from the 50 year old who has pictures of infants. The punishment and response should be fitting to the crime.

Good points, Mike. I agree that anyone harming children should be severely punished, but the perverts looking at the images don't deserve the death penalty in my opinion. In fact, I feel quite sorry for them.

That's straight awful! What is wrong with someone that feels the need to want to view children in an explicit manor? It's the craziest thing ever. I truly hope the children involved are able to recover from what they have been put through.

As for the people that they were able to arrest due to the digital fingerprints, BAHAAA I bet you weren't expecting technology to kick you in the face like that, must of been in shock with that knock on the door.

Good start. Now, if found guilty, put a bullet through their head. Sounds harsh, I know. But if someone gets to the point of raping a child then they are a disease that needs to be erradicated. The recidivism is to high and damage too great. And when it comes to our innocent children, it's the least we can do to protect them.

There are plenty of government employees that do act in a responsible and dignified manner. The majority of them are good people doing a necessary and often thankless job while taking a lot of needless abuse from the occassional irate citizen.

I am sure you didn't mean that the way it sounded and are just expressing the same frustrations I feel from time-to-time. It is just all we ever hear about are the small number of bad ones who distort our view of the rest.

This crime is about the only one I would agree with a bit of "cruel and unusual" punishment, as the perpetrators fit this defintion themselves. The number of arrest just sickens and scares me each time I hear of these sweeps.

I've got a pretty good imagination, and I haven't come up with any punishment I would consider "Cruel", but a few I do consider "unusual" for these Guys (I assume)...but there should be a provision for certain crimes (like this one and spousal abuse) where "cruel and unusual" doesn't apply....and maybe a contest to choose the punishment...Life in super-max prison, that has no doors on the cells, and lights out 23 hours a day and Gloria Alread interviews on the PA system...Maybe that last part went to far???

It is always the least likely that one has to worry about. There is an old man in my community, once very highly respected in the community, who is sitting in jail awaiting trial on over 80 counts of child pornography. The dumbass took his printer to a computer shop because he was having problems with it. As soon as the tech fixed the problem porn started shooting out of the printer. The idiot had stuff waiting to print when it fouled up on him. Who knows if this scum would have ever been caught, otherwise. Apparently there is one photo of himself fondling a young girl, who they have yet to identify as they believe it took place about 10-15 years ago in another community. I hope if the people in this story are found guilty, they, like this person, will rot in jail for the rest of their lives.

How is living NEXT to a day care CONNECTED? I live near several day cares and am in no way connected to any of them. Presuming this is in an urban area of course buildings are connected. Did the 23 year old work there in any manner or have a relative that was connected or did he just happen to live where he lived?

Doubt very much if that was the point. When they say connected and there isn't one the only purpose is to sensationalize things. Be that the media or the "official" who is mysteriously is not named. The downside is they have now advertised:

        1. There is a vacancy near the daycare

        2. Anyone who is involved with the person and knows where they lived will be cleaning house.

I agree these types need locked away for a long time and segregated from children permanently.

There's no fixing these people they are sick. Simply have a trial and present the evidence and if they are found guilty they should automatically get an appeal. Have their cases reviewed by a board that specifically reviews only child pornography cases and if your conviction is upheld you should he castrated. Plain and simple...That way there is no urge because the problem area is no longer functioning. No repeat offenders to deal with and no future victims to worry about. When someone is sexually attracted to children prison does nothing to cure that attraction and as of yet there is no way to chemically fix the urge so cut it off!!

See, if we could go back to court-house lawn hangings these individuals would skip to the head of the line.

Yes Sir, I totally agree with you. I believe a public hanging of these scum bags is in order.

Dopey Liberals? How about not being a moron that keeps on wanting to keep in power those who gang raped all of us for 8 long years and destroyed our way of life and our country with their insatiable greed thus creating a nation where 80% of the population stuggles to make ends meet, a 10% does O.K. a 9% does well, and a God damm 1% has all the power? Just because almost the 80% of us use our brains unlike 99% of the followers of the obstrutionists, criminals and plunderers better known as TeaPublicants you dare to call us dopey? Take a look at my posts and see what's my position on the death penalty. Who's the Dopey???

I would say it's probably because they've done everyone in the book so just a simple loving mate doesn't do it anymore. It's pretty lame. I wish neuroscience people would be able to profile these people so we can just give them a simple CAT scan.

Probably the same reason some people are gay. I'm not saying being gay is a bad thing, but I think their brains both function differently in that way.

Child pornographers are not creating a demand, they are catering to a demand that is already out there, which is even scarier.
