Inmates, including murderer, at large after Kansas prison break

The inmates who escaped a Kansas jail are considered armed and dangerous, Kansas law enforcement officials say.

Four prisoners, including a man convicted of double murder, escaped from a central Kansas jail before dawn on Wednesday, authorities said.

One was quickly apprehended, and another was caught at 5:30 p.m. The other two, including the convicted murderer, remain at large, the Kansas City Star reported.

The men, described as "armed and dangerous," escaped from the Ottawa County Jail, where they were being kept as prisoners of the Kansas Department of Corrections, said Jeremy Barclay, department spokesman.

The two men who remain at large are Santos M. Carrera-Morales, 22, who was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder, and Eric Jerome James, 22, who was convicted of kidnapping in commission of a crime, three charges of aggravated burglary and criminal damage to property, the Kansas City Star reported.

Drew Edward Wade, 21, convicted of aggravated battery and attempted robbery, was caught early Wednesday evening.

The inmates had been transferred to the jail because of overcrowding at the state prison, The Associated Press reported.

Eric James, 22, Santos Carrera-Morales, 22, and Drew Wade, 21, three of four people who broke out of the Ottawa County Jail in Minneapolis, Kan. on Wednesday morning. Wade was caught; Carrera-Morales and James remain at large. A fourth inmate was captured soon after the escape.

Barclay said details of the escape were being investigated and that no staff were seriously hurt in the incident. The inmates overpowered guards with homemade knives after complaining about a broken water pipe in their cell.

North Ottawa County schools superintendent Larry Combs called off classes Wednesday out of an abundance of caution, according to The Associated Press.

"We're a small town," Combs said. "The kids in the country would probably be fine, but if the escapees were on the streets and we have 300 kids who walk to school on a nice spring day, I felt it was in the best interest of the kids to keep them out of schools today so they're not a target.

"This was one of those decisions that's not on the books," he added. "We have crisis plans for almost all situations, but a jailbreak is not on that list."

The public should contact the Department of Corrections with any sightings or other information on the three men. They may be in a multiple-colored Nissan automobile, Barclay said.

Anyone with information on the escapees are asked to call authorities at 1-800-572-7463 or 785-472-5501.

Anyone in the public who comes across them just shoot them save the taxpayers money for another trial. The criminals are all young and will spend way too much time behind bars. Stand your ground and take care of them they will not care about you if you are in their way, one is already a murderer he has nothing to loose. I can't believe they couldn't find a corner in the prison to stuff this killer in, why the jail?

Prison is over crowded. If someone was to investigate it's probably full of prisoners booked for smoking weed. The are very dangerous!!!

Another story that is so convincing to give up our right to own and protect ourselves with guns. We are surely convinced the "Authorities" will continue to make the right decisions that will keep us all safe. Heck most county jails can't even keep the drunks contained.

years ago i think in michigan a warden made a mistake and let the wrong guy out while out the guy killed this mans only child ,his son his sons wife and his unborn grandson killed this fellows whole family ,i remeber the warden was on television admitting his mistake apologizing to the guy and said he was taking early retirement,i always thought big deal the warden goes out on a gravy train pension ,the other guy lives life minus his family, the warden should have been canned and his pension given to the guy who lost his family, will anyone get penalized for these clownns getting out?probably no they find out who screwed up send him to another prison and give him an advancement and probably boost in pay.

Convicted felons, especially murderers and kidnappers, don't belong in county jails. That over crowding excuse doesn't get it. You mean to tell me that even with the over crowding, they couldn't find less dangerous prisoners to transfer to the county jail?

Another MSN snafu of a story. No specifics on colors of the car, no pictures of the inmates, etc. How can the public be on alert if we do not know what we are looking for? Am I the only one who finds this type of pandering journalism to be pointless other than to stir hysteria? This type of story should be informative and lead to the eventual re-capture of these inmates. Get a clue MSN!

It's absurd! "Let's call this a news story - with NO news!"

Why were they holding a convicted murderer in a county jail? I am sure that there were criminals with minor charges that they could have housed there. Drug possession, forged checks, even car theft, so why harden criminals?

Why no pictures, msn? Don't you want them caught? Their names are nice, but I don't think they will be introducing themselves to anyone.

This is so disturbing.. Violent criminals shouldn't be brought to a county jail because of over crowding, seriously?? "call with any information on the escapees"? Really, with no picture or description?

Have to make room for pot smokers.

Why was a convicted double murderer sent to the local jail?wasn't there less violent criminals avaible?

They couldn't find anyone with a less serious crime than to let a person convicted of 2 homicides go to a county jail.

Yeah has no reason to what to escape.

Why would they relocate a convicted double murderer to a local jail? Why not send a non-violent criminal instead?

Build another damned prison! This whole country needs the work! Not only in construction, but as guards also! Catch these scumbags fast!

Gee, the prison is overcrowded, so let's send the murderer to the county facility. Why not send a prisoner with a lesser crime there?

Wow, its shocking to me the age of these men. When i was 21-22 i had a lot of fun. nways, i think for Santos M. Carrera-Morales, 22, we should be looking near Mexico border if not too late than look in Mexico.

Why would you send prisoners of this nature to a "small town" county jail? We mustn't give that dirty pot smoker we got locked up back there the chance to escape. Heaven forbid that you transfer that 60 year old DUI offender in there. My god, what if one of them were to escape. No lets put these murders and kidnappers over there in hicksville jail. What a foolish call, the people that made that decission should be brought to accountability.
