Coroner: Body of woman is that of Brittany Killgore, missing wife of Marine

AP

Brittany Dawn Killgore was reported missing Saturday.

The body of a woman found in California's Riverside County is that of a Marine's wife who disappeared last week, the county coroner said Wednesday.

Brittany Killgore, 22, was last seen on Friday in San Diego County and was reported missing the next day. Her husband, Cory Killgore, is based at Camp Pendleton but has been deployed to Afghanistan.

Another Camp Pendleton Marine who authorities say is a person of interest in her disappearance pleaded not guilty to weapons-theft charges Wednesday, the North County Times of Escondido, Calif., reported. Authorities said they found an AR-15 rifle taken from the Marine base in the car of Louis Perez, 45, and questioned him about Killgore’s disappearance. Detectives said he has been uncooperative.

Authorities have said Perez was the last person seen with Killgore.

On Tuesday, a woman was arrested in relation to Killgore’s disappearance. Jessica Lynn Lopez, 27, was booked into Las Colinas women's jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. Lynn was taken into custody after deputies found her at the Ramada Inn in Point Loma with self-inflicted wounds, Lt. Larry Nesbit said. A suicide note in her motel room reportedly led investigators to the female body in a rural area of Riverside County, the Times reported.

Perez was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail after the hearing, the Times reported. Lopez is scheduled for a court appearance Thursday.

Police have not explained the relationship among Perez, Lopez and Killgore.

The developments came as word emerged that she had planned to leave her Fallbrook home and return to her parents’ Pennsylvania home, the North County Times reported.

Killgore was reported missing Saturday after a stranger called her parents from Killgore’s cell phone, said her grandmother, Cheryl Coble of Farmington, Mo.

A homeless man in downtown San Diego was attempting to sell the phone to the stranger, Coble said. The stranger then called Michelle Wrest, Killgore’s mother, who contacted authorities.

Killgore was supposed to go out with Perez and his girlfriend on a dinner cruise on Friday, Coble said. She said the girlfriend decided not to go on the cruise at the last minute and the Wrest family is unsure whether Killgore made it to the dinner. It was not clear who the girlfriend was.

On April 10, Killgore filed for divorce from her husband.

Coble said Killgore was supposed to go to her parents’ house in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Authorities found luggage and a laptop case at Killgore’s apartment and her belongings had been shipped to her parents’ house, according to Coble.

"She just wanted to be at her parents' house," Coble said. “[She] just wanted to sit and hold her new niece.”

Darryl Wrest, Killgore’s father, and her grandfather, Jim Wrest, are in San Diego. Cory Killgore is expected back from Afghanistan by the end of the week.

There's so many of these stories lately, it's hard to keep track of them all. Was this the woman who filed for divorce while her husband was overseas?

There is obviously a lot more to this story than what is in the article. I have some serious questions about the 45 year old marine Perez who's girlfriend conveniently cancelled out on a date at the last minute to leave Perez to go with Killgore on this dinner cruise alone. It sounds more like a set up and Perez was interested Killgore and things may have gone bad quickly when she rejected him. This is of course just guesswork, since the article has so little information, but it makes sense since Perez was the last person to see Killgore. I am sure that more will come out as the investigation moves forward.

As an aside, I think that Killgore filing for divorce while her husband is deployed to Afghanistan is pretty crappy. However, it is certainly not excuse someone killing her. Unless he is one cold SOB, I am sure her husband is seriously conflicted inside right now, balancing his anger that she was leaving him with his sorrow that she has been killed.

"balancing his anger that she was leaving him with his sorrow that she has been killed"

Yea, sure, after he called his camp Pendleton buddy and asked him to take care of the b**** before she took half his stuff in the divorce.

Yes, it is so convoluted that even the speculation-fest that this comment board usually devolves into is mostly on hold because no one can make any sense of all these pieces.

This story has more players than a dinner theater show!!!

Need more info about the Lopez woman. That line came out of left field and then they just talk about Perez. Is Jessica Lynn Lopez the girlfriend of Perez? If not, what does the GF know? If the suicide note contains a confession was Perez's name thrown out there???

Maybe she was cheating, maybe her soon-to-be ex hubby had his buddy take care of her? Maybe it was a jealous GF?

    Release the suicide note PLEASE!!!!!!

If you read the article yesterday she was bringing friends over to the house late at night, and was going out till late at night most nights. Also she was wearing an evening gown, she was most likely cheating on her husband ad with him gone decided she wanted other people then waiting for him, police shoulld look close at those she was "dating" going out with.

Did you even read the article? She was getting ready to move in with her parents and was spending a weekend evening on a "dinner cruise" with who is presumably a mutual friend of hers (or so she thought) and her husbands.

"The developments came as word emerged that she had planned to leave her Fallbrook home and return to her parents’ Pennsylvania home"

You don't move to Pennsylvania OR back in with your parents if dating is your goal. This is most likely a couple of marine buddies attempting to"take care of business" for each other.

No one knows what was going on behind closed doors for this couple. She didn't deserve to be murdered. Men have screwed around on their wives while in the service, as women have on their spouses since the beginning of time. There is a very high divorce rate for this part of our population. They know that when they take the job. They know that when they marry a person in the service. I feel badly for alll involved.

Actually, many if not most of the plots are taken (generically) from real cases. Just from old cases that are not in the headlines. The writers do research on old closed cases.

There are SO many unanswered questions here... I hope they catch the killer for sure or lock that chick up if that chick did kill the girl.. Why did the 27 year old kill her? Why was she divorcing her husband when he was STILL deployed? Why was she REALLY going out with that 45 year old and his "girlfriend". Where WAS the girlfriend?

I hope authority's do not rule out Killgore's husband. The Marines are a tight group and if I were overseas and found out my wife was filing for divorce, I be mad and would contact someone state side to look into the matter. I not say that her husband had anything to do with it, but you have to investigate all angels.

Ellis B. I think Popo is implying that the husband may have solicited another Marine to murder her while he was still in Afghanistan. You don't need to be anywhere near the actual crime to solicit murder. All it takes is a phone call or an email.

You know, I (kinda') feel lucky for what happened to me while I was in the Air Force, compared to what this guy must be feeling. My first wife aparently decided to get a divorce from me while I was in Viet Nam, but said nothing until I got home. The very night I stepped off my freedom bird on the East Coast, she laid the glad news on me. The next day, things started to go downhill - fast - when my then employer refused to give me my job back, and nobody would hire me. Hell! hardly anybody would even accept my application; as soon as they saw VETERAN and Viet Nam, they would tear up my application. I can imagine little worse than being in a combat deployment and finding out that your wife has filed for divorce. I hate to say it, but he's better off without the *&^%$. He has my sympathy.

These articles are written in order to sensationalize an already unusual situation. Court of law, and rule of law, is what this fine Republic is based on. Don't jump to conclusions based on very limited information. Instead, have compassion for the family, friends, and loved ones of this human being that has left this world way too early. Let the families grieve and let the professionals do their research. Just because you watch "Criminal Minds" does not make you a F.B.I pro-filer. May she rest in peace and may her family find answers, justice, and closure.

If marines are smart they will get Cory Killgore out of Afganistan pronto. Wife had filed for divorce and was leaving him, now she is dead. In the heart of a war zone, how much stress can a young marine take before he snaps, and America does not need another loose cannon right now, my sympathy is with this young man.

In a nut shell, this is a girl that made a number of bad choices and now she is dead as a result of it. To start with what is she doing going on a dinner cruise with a couple to begin with? She was a very pretty girl so I just am not of the opinion that she needed to be playing the third wheel by doing this in the first place. Also what is this 45 year old Perez guy doing chasing after a girl that is old enough to be his daughter? This guy sounds creepy and I am willing to bet anything that he is the one that killed her. As someone has already stated, the likelihood is that he set the whole thing up with the intentions of hitting on her, it didn't go well and he killed her; the oldest motive in the world for a guy to kill a woman better known as rejection!! Well, I am sure that the authorities will get to the bottom of this and in the end he is going to be their guy. I just find it very sad that so many young people are pretty clueless come time to know what to do in a situation like this.

"Police have not explained the relationship among Perez, Lopez and Killgore."

Whatever the relationship was, it existed BETWEEN them, not "among" them! Good grammar matters when writing news stories.

"Between" is correct when there are two items being compared. "Among" is correct for more than two items (or, as in this case, people).

MSNBC has many, many errors, but in this case they got it right.

The slain woman had just filed for divorce from her husband, who is in the marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton. Another Camp Pendleton Marine is the last person known to have seen the slain woman alive, and is a person of interest.

Sad to say, odds are the husband contracted with his fellow Marine to murder his soon to be ex-wife, and now the whole plot is unraveling.

There will be further developments in this story.
