'As lucky as you get': Cop stabbed in head survives

NYPD

NYPD Officer Eder Loor was stabbed during a confrontation in East Harlem, New York.

A police officer stabbed in the skull while responding to a 911 call "has a shot at a full recovery," according to his doctor, because the knife blade narrowly missed vital brain functions.

NYPD officer Eder Loor, 28, was stabbed in the face and neck and had bleeding on the brain when he arrived at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, officials told NBC New York.

Dr. Joshua Bederson, professor and chair of neurosurgery at the hospital, said Loor would be uncomfortable for a while and would have low energy, but said "my guess is that within a month he'll be bugging me about getting back to work."

Overall, he said, Loor is "as lucky as you get." The knife, he said, went deep into Loor's temporal lobe and nicked an artery that, if it had been cut, likely would have killed him.

The New York Times reported that the folding knife’s three-inch blade passed half an inch below structures that control motor functions and another half-inch from structures that control vision. It touched the nerve that gives sensation to the face and nicked, but did not penetrate, a major artery.

“It was a millimeter (0.04 of an inch) from everything; it was ridiculous,” Bederson told the New York Times. “You don’t want to overemphasize, but he was at death’s door. He was minutes away from crashing.”

Loor's pregnant wife, Dina, said her husband loves his job and will surely want to return to it.

"This is his passion, this is what he's lived for ... he doesn't quit ... he wants more and more in life," she told NBC New York.

Loor had been responding to a 911 call in East Harlem by the suspect's mother, who had called police saying her son needed to go to a hospital because he was "acting in an erratic manner."

The suspect, Terrence Hale, has several previous arrests, one for assault with a knife, officials said. A law enforcement official said police officers had been called several times to the home where he lives with his mother.

More police officers being killed despite drop in violent crime

The officers were escorting him out of the apartment building when he suddenly produced a knife and began stabbing Loor. He fled but was caught two blocks away.

He was undergoing a psych evaluation at Metropolitan Hospital. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Dina Loor, 25, told the New York Times that she had brought their four-and-a-half-year-old daughter into her husband’s room for a bedside visit. The girl was happy “to see her dad,” Loor said.

Their next child, a boy, is due in July, the newspaper said.

This only is a story because it's a cop....How many old ladies, kids were attacked yesterday in NYC. Or they don't matter...

You could say that about any story in the news these days. "This only is a story because it's a _____". The Media is a business and they are going to print the stories that make them money; I believe the only reason the news is covering the female that went missing who is in the army, is because she is beautiful. How many women or children go missing every day and don't make national news? See what I did there I-Belive...

    #1.2 - Thu Apr 19, 2012 8:43 AM EDT

    I-believe....

It is on here because it was an odd type of story. These things don't just happen. Did you read the story? Things happen all over the country not just in NYC and you don't hear about them we have fallen officers in our state that don't hit the news their is crime everywhere it is a fact of life people killed, horendous attacks kidnapping etc. This hit msn because it was an unusual story.

By the way do you want their job? Go ahead and try it you may last a week after you find your first maggot filled baby that was killed by a sex offender or suicide thats been half eaten by buzzards.

I-Belive, you are very right it made news because he was a cop. This is just one of the many dangers and sacrifices police officer face everyday in the line of duty. This happened BECAUSE he was a cop. There is a big difference from what you are talking about. Bad things happen to people everyday but it does not happen because they are trying to protect and serve you. Glad to hear he will have a full recovery and thank you Officer Loor for your service to your community.

Poor little i-belive - Your badge envy is poppin' out, dude.... The next time you need a cop (and just from your comment I can tell you live a lifestyle where you need them often), call an old lady or a kid instead. Quit hatin' because you are a wannabe.

The one bad part of this story is that the "suspect" is getting a psych eval and isn't lying prone on a slab in the morgue.

I think luck would have been not to be stabbed in the first place. But since he was, this is as good as you can expect.

To be a free society, we must protect ourselves from those who would take away our freedoms. Violent repeat criminals cannot exist in a truly free society, or that society ceases to be truly free. You cannot both say you have freedom for all, and have those who take away freedom intentionally. They by definition, cannot coexist.

@ Jeff Fuller: my question exactly. And how stupid were the cops who failed to search this psycho to be sure he wasn't armed in any way. This whole thing could have been prevented.

@ I believe: you're a moron. Do you have any idea how many people get stabbed in the brain with a knife and have it miss all vital parts (like severing the artery instead of just "nicking" it) and then live to tell about it. That's the story. I was an ER nurse for 15+ years until I was injured on the job, and things like that don't happen often-they are usually either DOA or they die on the OR table.

They should never be released into the general population, but if they are, they should be permanently fixed first.

There was a mistake made here. The knife should have been found before the guy was escorted out to the street. Also, why wasn't he in handcuffs? Hope the cop makes it.

Because he was only acting erratically. He did nothing wrong to warrant them to put cuffs on him or pat him down. He was being escorted out of the building for questioning when it happened.

Cops do this because they are in a confined unfamiliar area whereas, the suspect is very familiar with the interior of the building giving him the advantage.

Any questions? Have a good day.

Creek Dog - I have to disagree with you on this one. This subject was known to the police and they had been called there due to his erratic behavior. Law enforcement 101, cuff and pat down, and control subject before transporting him anywhere. Subjects are often hiding weapons on their person and hands reach for weapons and kill officers. What started as an investigative detention quickly escalated to an assaut on a P.O. and the subsequent attempted escape of the subject. Given this subjects history, it is doubtful that there were not indicators verbal, non-verbal, or both, that the subject was not going to cooperate with the officers. Granted, things can go sour in the blink of an eye.

Regardless, I am elated that this officer will survive with what should be minimal physical problems and get to be a husband to his wife and father for his kids. It is also good to know that this menace has been captured and hopefully will not be on the street to harm someone else.

@ "Creek Dog"-it's the one's who are acting erraticly who need to be placed in handcuffs and patted down the most. Erratic behavior usually either means mental problems or severe drug abuse. Either one of those things can cause the person to go off with no prior notice (which is exactly what happened). I'll bet you that the cop who wasn't injured gets written up for failure to follow procedure. He's lucky that the other officer didn't die. And for those who think he should get "mental help", in most states that means 3 days in a psych facility and then discharged with a prescription which the nutcase either doesn't have the money to fill, or he won't take because he "doesn't like the way it makes him feel". There is no real mental help out there unless you have good insurance and can afford an inpatient facility for an extended amount of time.

Im not grouping all cops , there are some good ones,I was simply looking from a different perspective.Do you know how it feels to be targeted by police because of how you look how you dress or the car you drive? If not then how can u sympathize with someone who has?

Temporal region of the skull is notoriusly thin walled bone. You literally could puncture it with a sharp stick, or say running with scissors. Let that be a lesson to ya.

Creek Dog-the temporal area of the head is the softest part of the skull and the easiest way to kill someone. Have you not heard of baseball players being hit in that part of the head by a line drive, only to have to have surgery for bleeding on the brain (if they even make it to the hospital)? I took care of a 7 year old girl who fell while riding her bike, striking that area of her skull on a concrete parking abutment, and within 20 minutes she was totally unresponsive due to bleeding in her brain. Luckily we got her to the OR fast enough to stop the bleeding, or her brain would have pushed her brainstem through the bottom of the skull, killing her. This cop was very, very lucky to survive such a horrible injury without permanent loss of some vital function that is controlled by those areas of the brain.

Individuals get off their meds all the time without supervision unfortunately it is not against the law to do so. No one can make them take their medication. Usually what happens is the medication makes them feel better, so they start to think "I am better" I don't need it anymore. What the person fails to understand is that's why they feel better because, they are on medication. It is a vicious cycle.

Liz-he probably wasn't "taken off" his meds-in most cases people stop taking psych meds themselves because they don't like the way it makes them feel. There's no way for his family to force the medicine down the throat of an erratic, grown man. Their only recourse is to call the police, and we know how well that went.

Exactly! had there been some sort of knife registration database, and a 7 day waiting period this never would have happened. There is no other use for a 3" folding knife other than to kill people. The makers of these "kinves" know this and should be sued for it. They are as much to blame for the proliferation of knives in this country as the psycho right wing nuts and survivalists who use them! We need to ban these "Knife Shows" too. This is insanity! People can just go to their Fairgrounds on a Sunday afternoon and buy as big a knife as they want, no questions asked. I know a guy at work who's planning something. He collects knives. Why just tyhe other day he walked into work with a sack of them. I knew he was going to do something, so I left. I wasnt protected with my concealed carry rock and a stick. I had left it at home.

Oh hi, you must be part of the "Let them Die" crowd. You realize he's mentally ill, crazy, -insane-, right? True, it would be much cheaper to just off him. But is that the humane thing to do to sick people in our society?

And no, defending the attacker is not in some subtle way trying to put down the officer. Its a tragedy what happened, but striking out in a emotional fit won't solve anything. Mental illness is like a force of nature. Or will you take out your rifle and give that next hurricane the justice it deserves?

Relax, folks. It's a cop. He has one of the greatest medical insurance policies on the planet and will back on the street to murder another innocent civilian before you can say, "Another cop gets no jail time for murder!"

1Desperateseekingthetruth- Sounds like you have some real hate for the law. I hope your wife or worse your children are never in distress when your not around to help. Perhaps you should have stayed on the right side of the law in the past and you wouldn't feel this way. Maybe you had a confrontation with a less than honest officer but that's no reason to judge or label them all as bad.

Hey bigshot, my Father was a peace officer for 29yrs in Chicago and he saw it all. I believe he helped alot of people as do most officers. With a outlook like yours no wonder you have a bad attitude. It takes an awful lot of restraint to work in law enforcement with creeps like you. Do something postive.

Our country is loaded with people who are both violent and mentally insane but live among us. This country should have settings set up for these type people away from the population since they can not handle the stress of life.

lf the police are responding to the same apt. over and over that is a red flag something should be done to get this person help before somebody dies.

What a country. Bet if this dude lived next to Sen. Shumer or Mayor Bloomberg things would be different.

I agree! There are no laws in place to force those who are mentally ill to receive help. I think most are scared to go down this road because who dictates who needs help? Could it be used against American citizens in general not just the mentally ill? The way we have it now does not work and people die everyday because of mentally ill people. A forced emergency evaluation can be used but only lasts 72 hours. After that, legally the hospital has to release the individual (as long as the patient is stabilized). A 14 day hold can be ordered after the 72hrs. But again, once the patient is stable and on medications they get to leave. They are offered resources and an appointment set up to continue treatment upon their release but, they are not required by law to continue treatment. If they do not have a good support system set up, they stop their meds and refuse appointments. The cycle starts again. Sometimes even when they have family and friends there trying to help they cannot make the individual take medication or go to needed appointments. The person has rights even if they are not making decisions in their best interest or in societies best interest as a whole. Sucks all they around and something needs to change.

What makes you think he's "mentally ill" Crisis? My guess is that he's coming down from drugs or has had his brain fried from them. I feel sorry for his poor mother having to put up with a grown man acting like a baby and needing her support because he possibly fried his brain with dope. Will these people ever learn that drugs kill and maim and many unfortunate times causes them to do things they ordinarily wouldn't do if they were sober and had a healthy functioning brain? Listening out there, druggies? At any rate if the man is actually mentally ill he needs to be put away from society and treated. If his brain is fried from drugs he still needs help. What a way to spend our hard earned tax dollars! But it is what it is; what else can we do to keep society safe from people like this? Closing the borders would keep a lot of the drug trafficing out of the US; but...that just makes too much sense, doesn't it??

Way to push your agenda, Rosegirl. It doesn't say anywhere in the article anything about drugs. And what exactly are you referring to? Marijuana? MDMA? LSD?

More then half the people in this country support the legalization of marijuana, and it will eventually happen. For the record, despite what your parents/pastor/friends say, pot doesn't "Fry your brain". Other drugs do, like cocaine, but its not clear what you are talking about so..

Other then that you are right, either way he needs to be treated. And we need a tighter border for sure.

Dearest Rose. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the "Druggies" who "Fry their brains with drugs" actually have some form of mental illness? I know it's hard to believe but many patients with mental illness turn to drugs and alcohol as a way of self medicating to make themselves feel 'Normal". Many more tend to find themselves amongst those who recreationally use drugs just because that's where they are in society.

Looks like you pretty much nailed every single stereotype and uneducated label concerning drug abuse and mental illness. Good job.

@ Rosegirl: although drugs is a possibility, it's more likely that he has some form of mental illness since the police had been called there multiple times about his "acting erraticly". People with mental illnesses are involuntarily committed long enough to get them back on their medications, and then when they're discharged, they stop taking them again, ie: the erratic behavior. After 20 years of working in Emergency Departments in one form or another, I'd say it's 100 to 1 that the man has a mental illness as opposed to a "bad trip" (and that comes from personal experience in treating these people). You sound like a person who has had a personal experience with "druggies" and therefor think that everyone with a problem must be one. That's truly a prejudice. I supposed you think that those who take narcotics from true chronic pain are "druggies frying their brains" also.

I don't know why people seem to be so confused about what a hate crime is but it is not a single against against a person of one race by a person of another race- it is defined by the actual motive of the criminal act.

A black woman named Sally murdered a white woman named Ann because Ann is white=hate crime.

A black woman named Sally murdered a white woman named Ann because Ann was sleeping with her husband=not a hate crime.

Bob killed Joy because Joy is Jewish=hate crime.

Bob killed Joy because Joy had twenty dollars=not a hate crime.

It is the motive that determines if a crime is also a "hate crime" not the skin color of those involved.

In my opinion POLICE AND SIU THEY ARE TERRORIST IN UNIFORM. When a police guy shoot a innocent person they sent SIU to investigate who are very bias and full of hatred. They always support police Ask these SIU people that how many police officers used leathal force against civilians who feed these idiots and their family. what accountability they have 0%. To hell with you BILL BLAIR If I become the Mayor of the city. I will fire all these morons Immediately and sellect a pannel of retired Judges to always investigate the criminal acts of the FOOLISH police. You idiots you choose to serve and protect so if you die on the line of duty that was your job to die for protecting people and you are being paid for your sacrifices. They are dogs and they will remain dogs in my eyes. They are terrorist in uniforms and similar to this there union should go to hell. Stupid police bastards.
