Subscribe to RSSThe Anti-Defamation League wants an apology from Peoria's bishop following a recent homily comparing President Barack Obama's policies to those of despots Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.
During the message at St. Mary's Cathedral in Peoria, Roman Catholic Bishop Daniel Jenky contended social services for Catholics could be eliminated if Obama's directive to include contraceptives in health insurance continues. Jenky went on to compare the actions to past cultural wars against the Catholic Church.
“Remember that in past history other governments have tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches like the first disciples locked up in the Upper Room,” Jenky said.

In comparison, he pointed to Otto von Bismarck's "culture war against the Roman Catholic Church, closing down every Catholic school and hospital, convent and monastery in Imperial Germany."
“Clemenceau, nicknamed ‘the priest eater,’ tried the same thing in France in the first decade of the 20th Century," Jenky said. "Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services and health care."
"In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama, with his radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda, now seems intent on following a similar path,” he said.
Chicago’s Anti-Defamation League calls the comments "outrageous." League Regional Director Lonnie Nasatir told the Chicago Tribune Jenky "needs a history lesson."
Nasatir said the bishop's homily trivialized the deaths of six million Jews and others during the Holocaust. He said there are few if any historic parallels to "the religious intolerance and anti-Semitism fostered in society by Stalin, and especially Hitler."

The Catholic Church lost all moral authority when it was revealed that they recruited and protected pedophile priests. Look up "hypocrite" in the dictionary and you will see a picture of the Pope. He also might want to explain why 80% of Catholic women use birth control while the church rails against it. If church leaders weren't so hypocritical, they would excommunicate these women. The Bishop should also take a history course on the Crusades, the Catholic wars against Muslims that fostered intolerence that continues today.

This is hilarious.... The Catholic Church is the one of the most restrictive religion in the world. The Bishops are po'ed cause women's rights are being debated and they are losing their argument that women should be second class and even third class citizens....

Shouldn't the Catholic Church clean up their own back yard of sexual abuse toward minors before it deems itself to become involved in politics? Their own policies of sexual repression for priests have become their undoing. It's laughable that now the bishop's ire is over contraception. Once again, we have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.

Anyone who takes religions (especially Catholicism) seriously needs to have their heads examined. This guy just needs to be chuckled at and ignored. This bishop needs to be defrocked!! I am Catholic. I am also a Democrat. I also respect the office of the President of The United States, even when George Bush was president. I also respect Barack Obama and right now I am really angry at this bishop who thinks he is God.

I would tell the liberal Bishop that all government social services for Catholics and others should be eliminated. That is the job of the churches, non profits, and private citizens. Social Services & the Pentagon are why we are $15 trillion in debt.
So the government is prohibiting the churches and private citizens from donating and providing these services? There is a reason for social services and a reason we need taxes to pay for them, and that is because people are greedy and do not help those in need!

Bishop Jenky is right. Obama is a danger to this Country and the Libeals can't or won't admit it. The Anti- Delamation League can go suck an egg on this one.
The Catholic church is a danger to me and has been my whole life.
As an adult I choose to leave this danger behind.
