"You don't even treat a dog that way," said Lisa Skidmore, whose 6-year-old daughter was forced to sit in her own filth in her kindergarten classroom when her teacher forbade a bathroom break during a test. KYTV's Sara Forhetz reports.
A Missouri mother says her 6-year-old daughter was humiliated after she was denied a bathroom break in her kindergarten class and was forced to sit in her diarrhea during a test session at school.
"They didn't even bother trying to clean her up or anything. She still had poop, diarrhea poop, coming out the back, up her front, down her legs," said the mother, Lisa Skidmore of Washburn, Mo., told KY3-TV on Tuesday.
KY3-TV, an NBC News affiliate in Springfield, Mo., was first to report the story.
The incident happened at Southwest Elementary School in Washburn, Mo., where children were participating in the Missouri Assessment Program tests; the state standardized testing required by law.
While tests are not administered until the third grade, the child's kindergarten teacher was sticking to MAP testing guidelines in efforts to simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come, School District Superintendent Bob Walker told KY3-TV on Tuesday.
"Bottom line, we regret what happened," Walker told KY3-TV.
Walker, who was contacted by msnbc.com on Thursday, said he met with the child’s parents on Wednesday.
“From our view point, this is a confidential matter and in regards to the media, we want it to remain that way,” Walker told msnbc.com.
In earlier interviews, Walker said he instructed teachers to be more sensitive to situations that might arise during tests.
"I don't want this to happen to any other kid. That's the point of this: I don't want this ever happening,” Walker said, according to KY3-TV.
The child’s mother said she has asked school officials for an explanation and a policy change.
"They told me that the teacher had asked her to go to the restroom before testing time," Skidmore said, according to KY3-TV.
Skidmore says her daughter was forced to sit in the class for the remainder of test time, about 15 minutes, then she was called after the test, and it was a 20-minute drive to the school, according to KY3-TV.
No one helped to clean up her child, she said. A teacher, however, did give the child a trash bag to wrap around herself, Skidmore said.
"You don't even treat a dog that way!" Skidmore told KY3-TV.

All in the name of the holy scantron. smh
I know it is juvenile, but isn't it ironic this girl's last name is probably "skidmore."
Yes - definitely juvenile, BUT I was thinking the same exact thing. It's like "really?"
That teacher really should not be teaching children, prisoners-of-war maybe, but not children. If that were my child the school district would be facing a lawsuit. Not for money, but to ensure that the insensitivity of the school district is changed.
Why o WHY do people send their PRECIOUS children to the STATE to be raised?
How can anyone be GOOD who is PAID to be? You can not MAKE people be decent, and your little child doesn't have a voice...DO YOU REALLY THINK IT WISE TO SEND YOUR CHILDREN OFF TO SCHOOL?
I think it is much wiser to send children off to school, then it is to try and home-school them.
When you cut the education budget to shreds in an effort to dumb down the children what else is expected
that worthless teacher should be fired ,her teaching credentials stripped and the schools administration severely looked into. what a bunch of classless people.
I just read an article recently about teachers who are denying bathroom breaks to older kids. 5th/6th grade ages and lots of parents were just fine with that. No bathroom during teaching time at all. Parents are cool with that, but if it's a 6-year-old is okay?
My oldest is entering preschool in the fall and I will be sure to tell her that if she has to go to the bathroom and is denied a bathroom visit in school, she's to go anyway and we'll deal with the consequences together later. If I were this mother, I'd be every bit as enraged.
Janie, are you comparing a 6 year old to someone who is 11-12 years old?
This would not surprise me. Eight years ago they cut our school pass times down to 3 minutes, that is all they give our kids to get from one class to another, use the bathroom, go to lockers, take care of girl problems, etc., and our kids cannot take their book bags to class with them so they are forced to go to their lockers after every other class. Our school is a sprawling two story mess with science labs in the downstairs northwest corner and English, language and writing classes upstairs southeast, and my son has first one then the other. He has had 13 tardies this year alone for being late to his American lit class because he has to stop and get his books. What's he supposed to do if he has to use the restroom? I will be so glad when he graduates.
The teacher should be fired. The mother is right, you don't even treat dogs that way.
That teacher needs to be suspended without pay, forced to write a letter of apology to the child and her parents and barred from ever teaching children that young again. Put her in HS and let her see if she can stop some of those MO farm boys from going to the restroom. LOL
While I think what happened is absolutely horrible, I also have to wonder at the parents who were, IMHO, increased the child's humiliation by taking this public.
I'm not sure it is helpful for this child to have this all over the national new. This being all over the internet will ensure it is NEVER forgotten, can ALWAYS be accessed to torture her later.
I hope no names are ever mentioned in follow-up stories.
SDS Bob Walker said this is a confidental matter. Well guess what Bobby boy its not anymore and your little pinhead is now under the public thumb so cowboy up your in for one he(( af a ride. And you deserve it, poor little poopy girl. Hmm wonder why mommy sent her to school with the $hits. Oh ya she didn't have a baby sitter. I'm torn on this one.
Hey, panhead (or do you mean "pinhead?") The article does NOT say that she went to school sick. Sometimes, an illness/bathroom emergency occurs out of the blue and very suddenly, requiring quick action. You're not torn...you are insensitive.
Yes Judy you are right emergencys do accur and maybe this little girl had one. And my post may have been insensitive. On the other hand this little girl should not be exploted in the news because of this, it can only add to her embaresment. Someone notified the news and my guess is it was mommy. Or the SDS because I dought that they were standing outside when this went down. Either way I do not have any sympaty for the mother or the school. Someone is looking for their 15 minutes of fame at the expence of a 6yr old and that isn't right. Also there is no need for name calling it's Panhead.
How terribly embarrassing for this little girl. School officials from her teacher to up the line superintendent should be fined for cruel treatment of a child. If this were the teacher's child would she want her to be treated this way? I think not. This is a sorry state of affairs if even the teacher has no compassion. No MAP test is worth what this child went through. Teacher should be suspended and removed from the district. Truly "man's inhumanity to man."
I don't think half of the teachers actually have children of their own. How cruel! That poor little girl. The teacher is ridiculous. It doesn't matter if they were asked to go to the restroom, before the tests start, some times CHILDREN, can get sick. You can not control diarrhea, or stop it! To let this defenseless child, sit in that for that long of a period of time, is despicable and unforgivable, especially a little girl, not that it wouldn't be just as bad for a little boy. The parents need to send the teacher a doctor bill, and a bill for the little girls clothing. Also a head doctor's bill ,because you have damaged that little girl. The teacher should be ashamed of herself and adding insult to injury, by wrapping a garbage bag around her. She should have ,at the least ,been taken to the nurse. She needed to be cleaned up right away. Start thinking of children as people, not your robots you can play with and manipulate. The teacher needs to write a formal apology to the parents and one in person to the little girl and then she needs to be fired. She broke the child's trust and humiliated her. The teacher better place herself in the child's shoes and see the consequences of her actions. Apparently, she has no common sense.
I've taught all of my kids that, if they need to use the bathroom, they should ask for permission. If it's denied and it's an emergency, then they should get up and go and I would deal with the consequences. There is NO REASON for a kid to be humiliated at school. That teacher should be fired; she doesn't have the patience or compassion needed to teach young children.
She ought to have her ass kicked.
How do children learn good judgement when their teacher exhibits such poor judgement. If it were my child, I'd sue but good.
That's abuse. Plain and simple.
I feel like if the teacher had broken the rules and given a bathroom break, she would have been reprimanded. Now that she stuck to the rules, she's getting reprimanded. Its unfortunate all around--and all for a BS standardized test.
The 6yr olds weren't taking the test. The teacher thought she would simulate the test environment that these kids don't need to take until they're in 3rd grade. No excuse at all for not allowing the child to use the restroom.
@Florida - They weren't taking the MAP test. That doesn't mean they weren't take some other form of standardized test. In my school district EVERY grade except 12th takes some standardized test during testing week. The grades that take the state test, obviously take that test. But all other grades (including Kindergarten) take the Terra Nova or some other national test.
I have no doubt whatevwer that Lisa Skidmore identified the teacher who forced Skidmore's daughter to sit in her diarrhea but MSNBC has chosen to cover up the teacher's identity. Explain.
A 6 year old doesn't have the bladder/bowel control of a 3rd grader! It is ridiculous to hold kindergarteners to the same standards. Fire them all!
You have got to be kidding me. There are way too many young qualified adults that want to be teachers to let this schmuck of a teacher keep her job.
It's obvious the teacher has no kids.......and hope she never does. She's just traumatized one for a long time. At least until the lawsuit is settled.
This is absolutely awful! Poor girl. Why didn't they call her mom as she was ill! Nut jobs!
That teacher ought to be fired for not letting that little girl go to the bathroom. The little girl should have sat on the teacher's lap and got poop all over her and see how she liked it. What a scum-bag.
"Bottom line"
How appropriate.
And to the person that dissed MS, go take your crap elsewhere.
Soooo the Biggest Question in my mind is:
After the diahreah bout, if someone calls her "Skidmore", Will the child suffer the stigma for the rest of her academic life? Afterall, that is her last name, isn't it?
I'm just sayin'
teacher should be fired....that was inexcusable conduct...diarrea is something you cannot predict... union or no union.....get the teacher out of the classroom.
That teacher needs her ass kicked. Plain and simple.
Never trust a man who would hit a woman out of anger.
