Missouri mom: Kindergartner humiliated after being denied bathroom break

"You don't even treat a dog that way," said Lisa Skidmore, whose 6-year-old daughter was forced to sit in her own filth in her kindergarten classroom when her teacher forbade a bathroom break during a test. KYTV's Sara Forhetz reports.

A Missouri mother says her 6-year-old daughter was humiliated after she was denied a bathroom break in her kindergarten class and was forced to sit in her diarrhea during a test session at school.

"They didn't even bother trying to clean her up or anything. She still had poop, diarrhea poop, coming out the back, up her front, down her legs," said the mother, Lisa Skidmore of Washburn, Mo., told KY3-TV on Tuesday.

KY3-TV, an NBC News affiliate in Springfield, Mo., was first to report the story.

The incident happened at Southwest Elementary School in Washburn, Mo., where children were participating in the Missouri Assessment Program tests; the state standardized testing required by law.

While tests are not administered until the third grade, the child's kindergarten teacher was sticking to MAP testing guidelines in efforts to simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come, School District Superintendent Bob Walker told KY3-TV on Tuesday.

"Bottom line, we regret what happened," Walker told KY3-TV.

Walker, who was contacted by msnbc.com on Thursday, said he met with the child’s parents on Wednesday.

“From our view point, this is a confidential matter and in regards to the media, we want it to remain that way,” Walker told msnbc.com.

In earlier interviews, Walker said he instructed teachers to be more sensitive to situations that might arise during tests.

"I don't want this to happen to any other kid. That's the point of this: I don't want this ever happening,” Walker said, according to KY3-TV.

The child’s mother said she has asked school officials for an explanation and a policy change.

"They told me that the teacher had asked her to go to the restroom before testing time," Skidmore said, according to KY3-TV.

Skidmore says her daughter was forced to sit in the class for the remainder of test time, about 15 minutes, then she was called after the test, and it was a 20-minute drive to the school, according to KY3-TV.

No one helped to clean up her child, she said. A teacher, however, did give the child a trash bag to wrap around herself, Skidmore said.

"You don't even treat a dog that way!" Skidmore told KY3-TV.

It is still the "Show Me State." I guess the teacher didn't believe the child. It really is sad that they'd treat a child so young that way just to simulate testing conditions the child will experience in 3 years. There simply isn't an excuse for an educated adult to treat a child this way. This teacher FAILs at rational thinking.

This teacher should be forced to make a public apology for her actions to the student in front of everyone who was present when this occurred. What she did as completely inexcusable. There is absolutely no reason to ever treat a child this way.

The question is this. If they teacher had taken the child and cleaned her up, would she have been sued for sexual harassment? It's a serious question.

Why are 5 year old babies having to sit for state exams? Most ridiculous thing this country is doing. That teacher should be publicly humiliated and made to attend a school that teaches common sense. Darn right I'd sue, too. No excuses here.

What is it with some teachers withholding bathroom privileges from young children?

When my daughter was in third grade (8 years old), she asked to go to the bathroom during gym class. Her very militant gym teacher flatly denied her request. After she begged to be allowed to go, the teacher allowed her to, but held the door to the locker room OPEN while she was using the bathroom stall inside, and proceeded to speak to the rest of the class...sitting on the floor outside the locker room door that was held open, saying, "this girl is an example of someone wasting our gym time...we're not going to allow that, are we? This is not acceptable to waste our gym time like this girl is doing". My daughter said everyone could hear her going to the bathroom and she was completely humiliated.

Another classmate of one of my children politely raised his hand and asked his fifth grade teacher if he could be allowed to go to the bathroom. The teacher flatly refused. After a few minutes the boy asked again, and after again being refused, he begged the teacher, trying to explain that he had to go very badly. The teacher refused, and the boy ended up wetting himself, and put his head down and sobbed at his desk. The teacher proceeded to call his mother for dry clothes, and for the rest of the school year, every day she would ask this boy in front of his class, if his mother had sent a change of clothes with him...did he have dry pants and underwear in his locker in case he had "another accident". With this daily reminder of his humiliation, the child was mentally tortured by this teacher, in my opinion.

People who choose to work with young children must be sensitive to the fact that they may need to use the bathroom when it isn't convenient...get used to it, and don't withhold bathroom privileges as a punishment or for any reason. That is just bizarre. This kindergarteners parents (in the article) have every right to be upset.

So how old do you have to be to control diarrhea? I'm 56yo and when that feeling hits, I can't just stop it. Can you plan ahead for diarrhea and go on command when the teacher tells you to go?

AKRandy - lets follow you around and see what we can fire you for at work - like posting to web sites on company time. Fire happy fool would then put down the teacher for not having a job - conservatives can twist anything to make their preconceived arguments. Be thankful you don't have to live with any AKRandy's.

The AKRandy's of the world think UNIONS have way more say than they really do, just so they can attack them for who and what they support politically. My old UNION had very little (basically none) say when employees got fired - and never once reversed a decision made by management.

Now as a parent you know everytime you try to do anything with children at least one of them will need a potty break. Probably several of them really. A kindergarten teacher should be used to this very soon into their careers. What was this teachers problem? Wouldn't it have made sense to line the kids up and walked them down to the bathroom and give each a chance to go before the test? If anyone here has/had small children, doesn't it become normal routine to have them use the toilet before going anywhere?

Complete BS on the part of the "teacher". How dare they leave that child in her soiled clothing. And the parents of the other children should be just as angry. They should make her disinfect that classroom. My youngest is in Kindergarten. I couldn't imagine his teacher doing something like this. I hope this person is fired.

I have to say even if you give the teacher the benefit of doubt, maybe she told all the children to use the bathroom before the test. And you give her a pass on showing poor judgement not letting the student leave the test to use the bathroom. Not helping her afterwards with immediate assistance is unconscionable. This teacher has no human skills and should find another profession.

Thanks...I think for some (hopefully only a sorry few) teachers, it is a power trip...and some are just mean spirited people. We had a meeting with the teacher and the principal regarding what was done to my daughter, and as my daughter no longer wanted to take gym class (even though she was very athletic and loved sports), we insisted she be allowed to go to the library during gym class for the remainder of the year...which worked for her...she loved to read, as well.

Seriously, who treats a child this way? Or, wait. More like what kind of teacher treats a child this way? So it's all about policy, right? Good thing shooting kids in the head for passing notes isn't in the policy. I'm sure some automaton would follow that too.

What the hell is wrong with our public schools these days? Seriously. If you have a kid about to enter the odd social experiment American public schools have become I fear for you.

Republicans want to reduce the deficit by removing funding

We spend more money on education per child than any country on Earth except Switzerland. Not exactly working out for us is it? We need the federal government out of education and more local control. I've heard that New Orleans has practically reinvented their education system and it is working.

@Chris Wanker.

Republicans? Buffett Rule?

You could become a productive citizen someday. Really. If you could take two seconds to realize votes don't count and no one cares anyway. Oh, and you are part of the powerless masses. Again, let me repeat, votes don't count.

But if you don't believe me please do yourself a favor before wasting your time with your political diatribes. Read Kennedy's 'Profiles in Courage'. It's as good an example as any. He explicitly states representatives do best to follow THEIR conscience. That means what they feel is right, when they're in power, goes. Never mind the fact that it might lead to a bungle in Vietnam, an overthrow of stable leadership in a foreign country, or more of the same largess that came before but under a different name/face (coughs, 'obama').

And think about it from a financial perspective. What percentage of your wallet goes to taxes? 30%? You think THAT'S enough to pay for all the wish lists of every representative's district out there? OR, do you think some will sacrifice the good of their district for the better of someone else's unless they have to by force? Some district is going to say, 'thanks for the free federal money but we'll pass!'

I so hope someone like you can move beyond the whole Right/Left spectrum of thought because it is a waste of your life.

Sincerely.

Why are 5 year old babies having to sit for state exams?

They aren't. The testing doesn't start until 3rd grade, the teacher of this particular kindergarten class opted to teach the kids a lesson and made the kids adhere to the testing rules/schedule, even though they weren't being tested.

Get your children out of these public/government run monstrosities that pose as "schools." It is no big secret that liberals run them (NEA - Democrat supporters). They are doing nothing but creating new generations of mindless idiots that vote Democrat. But, that's the plan. An educated and informed public is a danger to big government expansion, dependence, and ultimately control, and they know it. If everyone were self sufficient and independent, Democrats and liberals would cease to exist.

Home school your kids or get the money to send them to private schools. Get them out of these indoctrination camps that feel the need to ram things like Algore's "Inconvenient Truth" left wing junk science propaganda down their gullets.

Trashbag thing is totally wrong...but I wonder what the other side of the story is. Of course the school won't comment, but is this one of those children who has to be limited to 3-4 bathroom trips per day because she asks to go every 10 min...and then, is returned by other teachers to the regular classroom teacher because she is doing dangerous things that really adventerous 6 year olds tend to do in the restroom, such as, taking her shoes and socks off, climbing to the tops of the stalls, and jumping down to the wet, slippery bathroom floor free-bird style while screaming at the tops of her lungs. Or bullying other children in the bathroom. Just a few possibilities. Let's be real about what goes down in elementary schools! It could also be one of those situations where they have to follow a strict bathroom schedule (only giving exceptions to children with doctors' notes) because due to overcrowding...say 250 kids on a grade level share a total of 3 girl's stalls and 2 boy's stalls plus 2 urinals? Or is it the possibility that the week proceeding the test, all of the teachers had to go to a meeting, where they had to sign a document of "testing rules and procedures" that states they could have their license revoked immediatley if they break any of the rules, INCLUDING, not letting a child leave the room for any reason during a timed section of the test..only during breaks.

So again, trashbag thing, totally wrong...but what's the rest of the story?

This is another reason why I homeschool my children. The public school system ruins our children instead of helping them. When are we going to open our eyes to what is happening to our children? Fifty years ago this kind of thing wouldn't happen. We need to show our children respect. If you want a public babysitter then hire one. These teachers don't care about these children. All they care about is their paycheck. By the way, homeschooling can be done by a single parent working a full time job. I am one.

I suggest the parents and any neighbors, friends should picket the school and let the community know what an idiot their children have to put up with. There was NO EXCUSE for this, peroid.

That teacher needs to thank God that she never taught any of my kids. (I am pretty sure I would have gone to the school and beat that woman, rubbed my child's panties in her face, then beat her again..... but that is not the right thing to so, I do not suggest it.)

I am a long time homeschooling parent. My oldest three are now adults and I still have one in diapers. Back when I started everyone told me the boys would be complete social misfits and wouldn't be able to function in the adult world. Thank God I had the courage to stick it out. As adults they consistantly excel at their jobs and tested out of many college courses. I had few of the troubles other parents of teenagers had to deal with and am grateful everyday that I made the choices I did.

Over the years parents of kids in public schools have told me so many horror stories that I am convinced that a certain segment of school teachers take the job to have power over helpless children. I am sure the majority are good decent people but if you were a bad person would you not go where the helpless victims were? And who is more helpless than a child?

One thing is for certain the girl's classmates will never let her forget. Poor child.

    KJR

Thanks...I think for some (hopefully only a sorry few) teachers, it is a power trip

Yea most teachers in Missouri are like that kjr. I have a friend who was expelled from his school there for (and this is what I find stupid) Writing a political paper that questioned everything the government did and was doing to us and his teacher who was I believe a republican (can't remember) said this was "offencive and completely unethical to say about our government and George Bush and that the child is no better then a terrorist." But he's hated in that town anyways because he's the only atheist there so a lot of people have judged him over the years. And when I read the paper both me and his parents found it unbelievable that they would expel him for something as small as that. I thought the way that he was going to get expelled was getting in another fight but that neither here nor there. So the school board read the copies they were sent and some disagreed that something like this should even get him in trouble but they ended up using the majority rule and he was kicked. Missouri is a place that brings bad memories for me but it's not a bad place to live. So close to nature they'd almost blend in if the houses were wooden houses but we destroy nature everyday so what's it matter? Back to the point the teachers there are completely cruel to anyone they speak with. Hell even some of the cops are backwards. His mother told me a story of when he was in daycare but for the life of me I can't remember it. It'll come to me at the worse possible time imaginable.

this happened to my child in kindergarten. She asked the teacher to go to the bathroom and the teacher ignored her. i went into the classroom after school and noticed my child's shorts were wet. I asked my child did she use the bathroom on herself. She started to cry. I comforted her. And I spoke to the teacher about it. She gave some story about she didn't hear my child ask and if she needed to go to the restroom she should have. I told the teacher this better not happen again. Luckily her husband relocated their family and she left the school. That's just messed up. I am glad my child was not traumatized by this. I think i thought about it more than she did. I can still see her little face when than happened. so sad! Teachers need to be more considerate of others. They go when they need to.

Wow I can't believe she let this girl sit in her feces for that long. There's definitely something wrong with this teacher.

That being said, this is not indicative of most teachers. To make any such implication is ignorant.

To the person who said it is never OK to deny kids a trip to the bathroom, you obviously haven't had to deal with self-serving children. Many kids will say they have to go to the bathroom several times in a single class because they simply don't want to be there. If the teacher let that kid go every time you'd probably be on here complaining that teachers are too lenient. The trick is knowing when the kids actually need to go.

I don't see why this needs to go to court and waste the taxpayers' money. I think a heartfelt apology and some policy changes are in order, but no money need exchange hands. I hate to call for someone to be fired without knowing the entire situation, but to make a 6 y/o kid sit in their own poop for that long and then wrap them up in a trash bag is really pretty awful, so I'd have to agree with those who are for terminating her employment.

My children experienced similar and even worse behavior (just not on this level) from public school teachers and administrators. After the second incident with my youngest I pulled my kids out and home-schooled them. As I was leaving with my children I reminded the principal about the federal funding he was going to lose when they were no longer enrolled. I was working two jobs at the time so I found a home-school group to put them in. When I felt they were responsible enough to be home all day alone I enrolled them in an on-line home-school program. They're did just fine being home-schooled and are both now in their twenties, married, and employed.

The merits of this incident are beyond explanation or words, unbelievable.

    That rule's just fine.

But Mrs. Nelson, at time, would CLEARLY see one of use holding up our hands for several minutes, and she wouldn't call on you. One time, after I held my arm up forever, I just got up and went since I knew I was ready to blow a kidney, I couldn't be called out for lying or just wasting time in the bathroom.

Once I got out, I got in trouble for not waiting to be called on. But I recall standing up to Mrs. Nelson stating I "followed the rules and had my hand raised for X minutes and you wouldn't call on me."

Another time, a girl int eh class -- who was slower and had a semi-limp leg -- needed to go, and she (her name was Julie) also followed the rules and had her arm raised for ages. Her face was turning rather pink and had a worried face. I spoke up (without raising my hand) to get Mrs. Nelson to look up to see Julie was looking peaked...she got to go, but I got chewed out (It apparently wasn't my business).

Mrs. Nelson also was the creepy witch type who would blow her nose in tissues, and leave them on us students' desktops, and then ask us to throw them away for her.

If I'd go back to meet still-living teachers (elementary, middle and high school), I'd verbally lay into a few of them, telling them how dumba**ed they were, and that intellectually, they weren't all that bright and wondrous.

I scoff at all this modern P.C. stuff about crying for teachers' salaries being "so pathetically low." Tough. No one put a gun to their heads (this isn't Soviet Russia). Plus, look at public schools' salary rosters (public info). The tenured teachers are pulling in close to $80K a year....complete BS!!

That is another reason why my kids are now in private schools. If your kid doesn't go to the bathroom on the scheduled break - too bad. If your kid needs more time than the schedule allows, the kid get's detention. Even though we explained to the school that my daughter started having problems going quick enough, they still gave her detentions.

Once we left the public schools all these problems and other disappeared. And both our kids are on the honor roll.

Public schools work just like the Democratic party. It's their way or get ridiculed, punished, AND left behind.

daughter started having problems going quick enough

    should have said

daughter started having problems going quick enough she was probably having a medical issue that needed serious medical attention at that time.

Did have one teacher pull that crap in private school on my son. That teacher had the most complaints for how she handled students. Today, that teacher is the principal of a public school.

I remember them yelling at my mom when she came after one of the times I was sick, because I couldnt clean and dress myself without any help...

I think that teacher and principal both should be fired. That's past ridiculous. They both should be made to sit for hours without having a bathroom break and once they go to the bathroom on themselves they should be paraded in front of the school for all of the students to see. An eye for an eye. I remember my youngest son told me had that issue with his teacher but he knew I had told him before if you need to go and the teacher wont let then just get up and go and then go to the principals office and call me. Which he did. I went to the school had a talk with that teacher and problem was solved. She never messed with my son again. Then I got her dumb ass fired.

to all those who are complaining about the kindergarten class actually taking the test - go back and read the article again. They weren't actually taking the test - the teacher was simulating the process that the kids would go through in a few years. Which by the way, I think is wrong as they will never remember what the rules are in three years.

The teacher should be fired! It's as simple as that. How dare someone, especially an adult, humiliate a child like that! There is something seriously wrong with that teacher, and Mr. Walker, too. Of course he doesn't want all this media attention because he is an idiot for allowing something like this to happen. He should have fired the teacher as soon as he found out what happened! That teacher is a bully!! People like her destroy a child's self esteem.

This little girl WILL be scarred for life. She will forever be known by her peers as the girl who crapped on herself in school. The only way she will be able to live this down will be to transfer to a different school, which is just shameful. No child should ever have to suffer this kind of life-altering humiliation. The teacher needs to be disciplined. Severely. In the first place, these kids will not be taking the MAP tests until third grade, so she had no business trying to "simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come". What's next, SAT testing while still in the womb? Let kids be kids, for God's sake. Kindergarten is supposed to be about learning your ABC's and fingerpainting, not simulating tests. By the time the kids are in third grade, they will have a better handle on their bladders and how to function in a classroom setting.

Honestly, this teacher should be thanking her lucky stars that I no longer live in the area. I am for the most part a peaceful woman, but go messing with a child and all kinds of evil spills from me. Mess with one I love and I'll be sure to make you want to crawl back up into the womb you fell out of. That teacher needs taken out in public and put into stocks until she messes herself then let her sit in it for the better part of an hour with the whole world to see. A little taste of her own medicine would go a long way. Oh first feed her a few tacos with extra hot sauce and then give her a good dose of ex-lax.

She should face a criminal charge of child abuse.

The parents should sue the county, the school and if possible they should legally attach this teacher.

Humiliation, I know thee well. Back in special ed (it was a "study hall" period), I had a teacher Ms Mickelson. She would tape conversations/arguments I had with her over my free time (I used to have a digital pet, and after all my work was done, I'd play with it/feed it/etc, or read a Game Guide for Pokemon). Well, she'd then play it back to the next class for all the other kids to laugh at. Eventually my parents caught wind, I believe they eventually had her job for it, especially since I essentially had all my work done at that point, AND was being quiet until she started taking it and putting my things away, or generally being a bitch.

If there is a Hell, I hope she's burning in it. I have no love in my heart for that woman. She was crude, mean, she was short with all the kids, and she generally acted like we were a bunch of retards that she was forced to babysit. I noticed a lot of the teachers that actually give a damn are the ones being fired, whereas the cruel, loopy ones are the ones that keep their jobs. Mixed up world...

A few bad teachers doesn't mean you get a bad education. School results depend on effort, the bad teacher isn't following them home and monitoring their dedication to homework.

I remember crapping myself in Kindergarten. Not on the account of the teacher, but on the account that I was a Kindergartner. The teacher helped clean me up as my mom brought some new pants. The next day, none of the kids cared... why? Because we were 6 year olds in Kindergarten.

A few bad teachers doesn't mean you get a bad education. School results depend on effort, the bad teacher isn't following them home and monitoring their dedication to homework.

Overall, public education is very good. Hell, some of my high school classes were tougher than what I had to deal with in college.... a lot tougher, actually. I had at least 2-3 hours of homework every night in high-school.... but college? Maybe 30 minutes to an hour of homework every now and then, plus research papers. Sometimes a bit of studying (I am one of those people blessed with not having to study much to remember things).

One of my kids had a teacher that liked to play the control game with bathroom breaks and I told my children they didn't need the teachers permission to go to the bathroom, I told them to just go if they needed to. Which my children did a few times. Man oh man the teachers at the school hated me.

It's great for those that can work with no assistance and have the discipline to go it alone. Didn't work for my son. HE goes to a program at our community college an alternative high school that he excels at. If public school were run the way my sons CC class is and the one my older kids went to the drop out rate would probably be cut at least in half.

Why is this mother dumping her sick daughter with diarrhea on someone else to take care? Isn't that her parental responsibility. What the teacher did was wrong but the kid never should have been there. Parents, take responsibility for your kids! I'm reminded of my second grade teacher of almost 50 years ago. This kind hearted nun kept a box of donated clothes in the coat closet and was always sympathetic and helpful when accidents happened.

That was back when teaching nuns didn't even have college degrees. They just had more compassion and common sense. They don't make teachers like that any more.

      So Joy

This is your thought or lack ther of? You must be one of these ROBOT teachers. You ask what the other side is, which you have no idea then you and bash the child due to a way this child could be a hellion and then go onto things this child could have done. Then you go off with diarrhea of the mouth about over crowding and such. Well a quick search before your long post (took me 5 seconds) show that in the year of 2000 the whole town only had a population of 448 people. You say the Trashbag thing is what was wrong here??? The whole thing is wrong, not letting child goto bathroom, not sending to nurse and made to sit in it and then the towns lack of any reponse. I can understand that there could be other issues at play here but for you to go off into describing (making up) things this child (baby) could have done. Your comments make me think you are part of that teachers clique, you know the ones that act like they are still in school and prejudge children before ever meeting them due to a comment from another clique member. This kid if left in that system will never have a normal school life and the teachers will make sure of that.

So what did the child learn from this experience? She learned that her teacher really doesn't give a "crap" about her. She learned that being polite and asking permission is for the birds. She learned that perhaps a little rebellion is the way to go. She learned that school will be a living hell for the next 12 years.

What did the teacher learn? Not a darned thing. She will no doubt continue on her brainless antics. She will defend her actions. Her administrators will ignore the problem. They will probably give her some sort of "progressive" award. (Parents--be prepared to have a change of clothes ready for your children. They will probably need it for future testing situations.)

Common sense can not be taught. You either have it or you don't. Unfortunately, some kids suffer because of the lack of common sense, compassion, or integrity.

We've been brought up with the dictum: "These are the RULES, and they MUST be followed!" Personally, I kind of like rebellion.

Dick - your argument might have some merit if children never started feeling sick during the middle of the day. I've gotten calls from the daycare a couple of times telling me that my son had a fever or threw up... and he was fine when he left home in the morning. There will always be situations where children end up at school sick... it isn't always due to bad parenting.

Nothing can excuse the way that this girl was treated. The teacher can argue that she didn't know how badly the girl had to go, but nothing can excuse making her sit that way in front of the entire class and doing nothing to clean her up. I would be irate if this was my child.

This is what happens when politicians try to regulate every aspect of education.

      Standardized tests for kindergarten? Really?

Republican politicians in Texas passed a law that any student not pleased with a test score must be given an opportunity to take another test during regular class time. So, predictably, students don't study for the first test, knowing that a second one will be given. More time testing, less time learning.

The teacher's actions were unconscioanable, but who is it that made such a big deal out of tests for kindergarten students in the first place?

Unions keep wages high enough so that teachers better than those willing to work for wages slightly better than minimum wage can afford to teach at public schools. This is horrifying. Even if the teacher didn't believe she needed the toilet before she had an accident, once there was poo running down her legs, you'd think someone would have enough of a heart to clean her up. The teacher should be FIRED!! No common sense, no judgment are good enough cause. The test isn't even normally given until the third grade--and for good reasons. A six year old isn't able to sit that long, even without diahhrea. That no one tried to help the child AFTERWARDS is even more astonishing. When my daughter was in elementary school, I volunteered in the office and nurse's office. We had a locker filled with "emergency backup clothing" because accidents were always happening, sometimes on the playground at recess because someone laughed too hard or couldn't make it off the playground and back to the restroom in time. There were plenty of THIRD GRADERS who showed up needing backup clothing.

This is a perfect example of why many parents have lost respect for our teachers, don't support pay increases or bond elections. I hope the parents get more than an apology from this dimwitted teacher.

Elpea, do you want your children educated by someone without a college degree? Why in the world are teachers of so little value to you that you think minimum wage should suffice for anyone charged with preparing children for a productive, successful future?

Honestly, try teaching 1st grade and finding out exactly how many times the little darlings ask to go to the bathroom just because they're antsy - if you ever tried to put a 6 year old to bed at 8:00 you might understand. Doubtless the child did not communicate that she had such a serious problem until too late, and any teacher that would touch her would be fearful of a sexual harassment suit. The mother was called, the child was picked up and taken home where she probably should have been from the beginning. I'm sure she won't be forever scared by the experience.

I am a former teacher in this district, and I can tell you that there is no teacher's union at Southwest R-5. This district goes through a lot of teachers; many do not stay past four years. Moreover, you can be certain that this teacher has caught hell from both her principal and the superintendent, but they will not state that publicly.

DBZMOM - Right on! Thats why we need more legislators like Gov. Scott Walker from WI. He may be voted out of office thanks to public school teachers and their greed. What a shame! That teacher and all of the Milwaukee Public School Teachers should be ashamed of their greed and insensitivity. And they have the nerve to call themselved "educators". What do you think that little girl was educated on in her classroom that day? Shame, shame on that teacher.

BobW-3215303 - even though it is a public school there might be privacy issues to consider under federal guidelines. You might need to check FERPA which is covers privacy rights of children in public schools. This is and inexcusable act by the teacher and should be reprimanded but not fired. The teacher along with some other members of the school district should attend some type of training about bathroom breaks for this age group. I can understand older kids being denied bathroom breaks as I've heard enough stories about what some of the older kids do in the bathroom while they should be in the classroom. I have a degree in Elementary Education and while in our college courses the instructors told us to make sure to send the younger kids to the restroom when they ask.

Pedestrian, I'm glad you're "sure she won't be forever scared (sic) by the experience." I wouldn't count on it. I know at least one person who seems scarred by a similar incident that wasn't even as egregious as this one. I realize that it is difficult teaching first grade and that teachers often are not allowed to touch the kids, but the teacher would not have had to touch this girl to let her go to the bathroom. At minimum, if it was not clear how badly the girl had to go to the bathroom beforehand, someone could have used discretion and helped her clean up as quickly as possible once the accident happened to minimize her embarrassment. Since accidents obviously happen in first grade, I'm sure teachers routinely help kids clean up without being sued.

Accidents do happen but today a lot of teachers are afraid to even touch a child or they might be sued. I know teachers that have sent kids to the nurse's office to be cleaned as they are afraid of a lawsuit. Plus how is a teacher suppose to take a child to the bathroom to clean them while they have a classroom full of kids that need to be watched.

Yeah, Richard, those same pro-worker unions that are so close to sainthood that they won't even allow the teachers caught cheating in Georgia to be fired. Unions aren't about the workers anymore, they're about the political power of the union bosses. Anyone who believes differently needs to come out of Fairyland and back to reality. If they did what they say they do, I would support them, but now they're not even close. They protect the slackers and frown upon people actually working.

On this specific story: political correctness has now brought us to the point where common sense isn't allowed to be used. We've painted our people in a corner and given them no way out. There isn't enough money in the world for me to be a teacher in this country. I would be in prison within weeks for jackslapping some sense into some spoiled rotten "little angel" like the 6 year old that tore up a principal's office and sent an educator to the ER. I feel so sorry for this kid but this is the end result of overly liberal policies of political correctness. In this day and age it doesn't matter what you do, someone is going to be offended and sue. The best course is to do nothing and follow the rules, no matter what. You're still going to get sued by some jackass who won't parent but will gladly use their child as a pawn to get money but at least you'll be able to claim you were following policy, which means the school has to defend you.

First, the child was in K. The test was for students in grades 3-12. The teacher made a poor choice. Second, Call the office, and have the student removed. We have a book for emergencies during testing. Third, as Red Foreman would say the teacher is a dumba--. I am a teacher, and I'm not stupid.

rockband17...go back to school to learn how to spell principal. The word you used has a totally different meaning. Plus if you hit the teacher and the principal you are teaching your child the wrong way to handle things. It usually takes a major work violation to fire a teacher. I know a teacher that pulled a fire alarm as she wanted to prove that the principal wasn't at the school during the time the principal should have been at the school. The teacher was threatened with dismissal but the union stepped in and made sure the teacher wasn't dismissed along with nothing being mentioned about the incident in her employment record. The teacher should have been reprimanded and told to follow some common sense.

omg.. the union has nothing to do with what the teacher and the school refused to do for the child... You people are making this a totally different topic. And even if she is protected by a union there are still provisions for this kind of neglect from a teacher. You people don't even know how a union works yet you complain.. The teacher put a child at risk and the class due to biological human excrement, that breaks the union rules . she is fire-able if the stupid school would take responsibility for the incident which it sounds like they are trying to sweep it under the rug.

Rockband17, the principal can't just fire the teacher, and the teacher can't just quit. The teacher is under a contract, so it takes an act of the schoolboard. Now, you can try punching them in the face if they won't fire her. I should warn you, however, that a lot of those people are packing, so you're probably going to get the worst of it.

I know how a union works and most likely she would have been protected just like the teacher that pulled the fire alarm. The teacher that pulled the fire alarm endangered kids, other teachers, other employees and any other human being that was at the school but the union stepped in and protected her. You might mention that it is a biological hazard but kids are exposed to this stuff all the time. I know schools where kids have went into the bathroom and spread their waste all over the walls but the bathrooms are used until a custodian can get in to the bathroom to clean up the mess. Kids going to the bathroom in their pants to throwing up in the classroom happens everyday across the nation but nothing is mentioned about it until some parent calls up the news media and makes a big stink about it.

@Pedestrian-in-SF - You seem awfully defensive about that teachers very poor decision making skills and this incident; so much so it makes me wonder if you are that teacher. Hmmmm And as for the child not being scarred for life you are oblivious to reality. Whether or not a child is "scarred" depends on many factors, and I'm sorry but your denial that this was an agregious act of the part of the "teacher" shows how truly insensitive you are.

Yes, I think the teacher should be fired not for denying the child bathroom use with the excuse she (and I assume the rest of the class) was offered bathroom use earlier than was actually needed. Until the child had the diarrhea it wasn't clear that she "should have been" home from the beginning. That teacher should be fired for the fact that after the "accident" the child was treated without an ounce of compassion. For the 35 minutes that elapsed can you imagine that diarrhea burning the childs skin? How uncomfortable and damaging it must have been while waiting for her mommy. Can you imagine, for just one moment, how the other kids may have treated her upon returning to school the next day? Can you imagine how this little child may now feel more distrustful of not only that teacher, but others as well? Do you think the fact that what happened to this child doesn' bother YOU mean it cannot bother her.. or any other person with a heart? Of course you can't... not with that permafrost thing you call your heart!! I HOPE she isn't scarred for life, but society, bullies, that teacher, her family, and many others will determine whether or not her future is easier or more difficult in relation to this incident.

Pray to God, Allah, or whomever that Pedestrian-in-SF gets a taste of what that little girl went through... on a daily basis for the same number of years that girl lives. Pedestian-in-SF seems to me to be a big bully and really ticks me off for such a nasty attitude.... which I am now reflecting back to PiSF... Grrrrrrrr

It has been reported that the teacher is a ardent Republican with Romney bumper stickers on her car. She offered to strap the kid to the roof of her car, pull over at a service station and hose the poor kid down when she stopped for gas. Seriously Rekoop? Teachers greedy? We go to college for 4-5 years often at our own expense (I'm still $30k in the hole on student loans), work not only school hours Monday thru Friday but also 2-3 hrs BEFORE class and several hrs AFTER.

My day starts at 5:30am (I get up at 5). I have to go over my day's lesson plans, adjust as needed including the lessons for my gifted, ESL/ELL, and remedial students, and make sure I have all my materials for the day. Upon arrival at school (usually 1 hr before class) I have to prepare my room for lessons, run copies of materials, and then monitor the halls or cafeteria as students arrive. I teach 4 classes in Reading/Language Arts for 3rd-6th grades and 2 classes in Social Studies for 3rd-4th daily. My 2 planning periods (45 minutes each) are not breaks; I use them to grade papers, record grades, update lesson plans, email administration and parents, check my emails from administration and parents, and anything else that I need to do. Sometimes I meet with parents during these periods which means I have to catch up after school on the work I was going to cover.

After school I monitor hallways, watch students whose parents are late picking them up, grade papers and record grades, send out emails to administration and parents or call them (yeah we do a lot of that), again update lesson plans and record how the day's lesson's went so that administration and the school district can see if I'm meeting district curriculum standards, clean my room, and try to get out of there before 5:30pm (2 hrs after school dismissal). After taking care of an elderly relative on the way home and making dinner for my family, I spend most of my evenings grading any papers/tests/projects/lesson plan adjustments I didn't get to during the workday, and studying coursework that is required to keep my skills and license current (and I pay for these out of my own pocket with NO reimbursement from the school district at anywhere from $150 - $350/credit hr each class).

Weekends? Take professional development classes (the ones I study for during the week), create lesson plans, and buy materials for my classroom and students (out of my own pocket with no reimbursement to the tune of about $6K+ per school year). If I get a few hours to actually relax, I have chores to do. Did I mention that we have a family farm? Yeah, between that, taking care of my mother and my great-aunt, both of whom are elderly and have health problems, and taking professional development classes (education for teachers doesn't stop when you graduate from college) there goes my summer "break".

I work an average of 65-75 hrs/wk as a degreed professional and earn a salary of less than $40k/yr. And that's GROSS salary. After taxes and professionally-related expenses I bring home about $25k+/- per yr. Keep in mind I have a family to support, a mortgage, insurance, and living expenses.

I teach for the same reason most teachers do...because we love kids and love to help them learn. My students and their parents matter to me and I give them all the help I can to ensure that their child succeeds. I referee between quarreling students, listen to problems, watch for things that are "off" with students and report suspected problems. I have waded in to break up fights between students twice my size, been threatened by students and parents (not recently thank God), bought kids lunch or given them my own, bought clothes, coats, backpacks filled with school supplies, tended scrapes, cuts, and hurt feelings, cleaned kids up after they've been sick...whatever it takes to do the job for my students.

How dare you or anyone else denigrate the work of teachers. We are not glorified babysitters, we are not anywhere near properly paid let alone overpaid, and we put well over 100% into all we do. I dare you and everyone else who thinks teaching is an easy job to contact a local teacher and volunteer your time in their classroom to teach for even 1 day. How would you counsel a 14-yr-old girl who was raped over the weekend by her mother's boyfriend? The kid whose mom is dying of cancer? The kid whose parents fled some hellhole to come to this country and who is trying to learn to speak English on top of trying to adjust to his/her new life? The kids who are being bullied and harassed? The kids who are doing the bullying and harassing? How would you keep the academically-advanced kids from getting bored while working with the ones needing remedial lessons and still taking care of the ones in the middle?

And keep upgrading your education and stay abreast of District policy changes and Core Curriculum changes at the same time.

When you can do my job and do it as well as I can, you'll have every right to criticize me. Until then, you have no right to do so let alone tar every teacher in this country for the mistakes of a few.

And as for the child not being scarred for life you are oblivious to reality.

Very few kids get thru life after potty-training (which occurs about 4 yrs b4 age 6, so they've had plenty of practice at it) w/o having *an accident* at one time or another. Nobody gets *scarred for life* over it (I'm certainly not, & neither are my kids). Really. That's sheer dramatizing.

          agregious

          *egregious

Yes, I think the teacher should be fired not for denying the child bathroom use with the excuse she (and I assume the rest of the class) was offered bathroom use earlier than was actually needed.

You may want to rephrase that b/c the grammar is making it difficult to comprehend.

Spoken like someone who's never spent a day in a classrm. The tchr will not *get fired* & she should not be fired.

Elementary grade children are trained from the 1st day of schl to use the toilet at certain times ea day b/c they are taken in a grp.

This is b/c parents will scream bloody murder about their child being *unsupervised* if let to go alone.

If all a K tchr did was escort children to the lavatory all day when *they* feel like it, not only would she get no actual tchg accomplished, she'd be leaving the entire classrm of children *unsupervised* while she did it.

Faculty & staff are also *not allowed* to take children singly b/c of the potential for abuse accusations.

Therefore, children go w/ the class or they learn to *hold it*. (Tchrs get to go once a day. That is a learned behavior.)

Parents cannot make a *big stink* about toileting accidents while at the same time complaining their offspring are *unsupervised* in the corridor & lav.

Unless a child has a medical excuse from a dr on file that they cannot hold it & another waiver from a parent permitting *unsupervised* use, they cannot be allowed to go alone.

That teacher should be fired for the fact that after the "accident" the child was treated without an ounce of compassion.

Again, this is *policy* dictated by parents, not the schl boards.

A tchr cannot step into a lav w/ a child for said child to even wash hands, let alone to strip them down & touch their *private parts*.

This is b/c parents will scream that *all tchrs are pedophiles*.

The schl nurse is not allowed to clean up a child after an *accident*, either. They will give the child the necessary items to do so (incl clothing from the box kept for such emergencies), tell them how to do it, & put them behind a closed door in the health office bathrm so that parents cannot scream their child was *unsupervised* b/c the nurse is right outside the door.

If this child was not cleaned up when her mother came to fetch her, then she refused to do so on her own. It's the sitting in it that makes it squish up the back & into the front. Even a 4 yo can remove soiled underwear, shake it into the toilet, & dispose of it into a plastic bag, & then use baby wipes to the best of their ability to clean up & don a clean pair of pants, all w/o adult assistance. They may not do an *adult* job of it, but it beats sitting in it for half an hr & certainly lessens the stink factor.

The plastic trash bag was likely given to her to A) somewhat contain the stink & B) prevent fecal matter from smearing on her seat while she waited to be fetched.

For the 35 minutes that elapsed can you imagine that diarrhea burning the childs skin?

Since when is diarrhea like Satan's brimstone?

It's certainly not burning. It's the same temp as one's body....98.6. Unless the kid had a barium enema, diarrhea doesn't burn skin. Good grief.

Can you imagine, for just one moment, how the other kids may have treated her upon returning to school the next day?

You'd be surprised how nice kindergarteners can be to ea other in a situation like this. B/c I guarantee you this was not the 1st child all yr who had an *accident*. Fully half the class, if not more, has done it already. It's not that big a deal.

Can you imagine how this little child may now feel more distrustful of not only that teacher, but others as well?

I wouldn't trust my mother after she spread my accident all over the world by calling the media over it, that's for sure.

As for everyone else, bathrm privileges are hardly a *trust issue*. See above how that works in schl.

Do you think the fact that what happened to this child doesn' bother YOU mean it cannot bother her.. or any other person with a heart?

It probably wouldn't have bothered her excessively had her mother not made such a *stink* over it.

Pedestian-in-SF seems to me to be a big bully and really ticks me off for such a nasty attitude.... which I am now reflecting back to PiSF... Grrrrrrrr

That's called a CoH violation around here. You namecalled. That's considered a *personal attack*.

Is this nationwide? I reside in Charlotte, NC and had my 6 yr. old transferred because she said a classmate made an "ugly" drawing. She had no idea what she did wrong when the teacher called home to "tattle" and the teacher maintained the child in "Time-out" repeatedly without ever receiving any Happy Faces. The next teacher "kicked" her because she could not recite her numbers and did not allow the child to utilize the before going out to recess and the child soiled her attire. The teacher claimed that they have accidents. Very few, I may add. These kids are potty trained and some kids are meticulous about their cleanliness. The next teacher bullied a student while others witnessed and under the assumption that none of the students would tell. Mine did, but with repercussions. That teacher bullied her to the point of getting right into this child's face. She would make the students raise both hands, without bending the elbows, until she was ready or she would remove their Happy Faces! This child refused to attend school and was taken to the emergency room with severe chest pains due to the stress induced by this HIGHLY QUALIFIED teacher. The principal was a joke and there is not a superintendent to report to. This particular school follows its own rules. When asked to transfer my child, the principal stated,"can't do that because I would have to call another parent and request to move their child out to replace my child". He further stated ,"I have the ultimate decision as to what to do with your child." With that comment, I withdrew both my children and enrolled them in another public school. I say there are some very hard working, caring and compassionate teachers. Listen to what the children say and you'll know just who they are. Next year, I will home school. I sent a happy, enthusiastic child to the public school and they en-turn abused my child and the administrators covered. No one should be denied "potty" or water as this school did. I requested a teacher who understood human behavior, knew child-development and had creativity, the principal replied, "I don't know if I have one." Why? Well.....all the teachers are now on the same page and lack creativity and common sense. Listen to the child brag about their teacher, one has a happy student that learns with desires.

Alison, with all due respect, a public employee must always be able to withstand public scrutiny. Don't get me wrong, I have all kinds of respect for what you do. From what you post, you seem really good at it as well, but understand I've seen "teachers" post on this board that can barely form a coherent sentence. Logic? Reason? Yeah, right. Frankly I haven't even finished my undergrad and it scares me to see some of the supposedly highly educated people I see.

But back on point. As long as education is a public office, it is and should be open to public scrutiny. There are at least as many poor teachers as there are good ones. The Bell curve demands it. Again, you seem like the kind of teacher I would want my kid to have but be honest. Some of your "colleagues" aren't worthy to watch over a fish tank, much less a room of kids.

          Well said.

And anyone who thinks tchg kindergarten is a walk in the park ought to try that as well. It's harder than tchg MS or HS b/c the majority of students have never been to schl b4 (pre-K has fallen to budget cuts in many districts. Head Start has more applications than budget & cannot accept every eligible child). Parental preschl involvement seems to have taken a drop as many 5 yos don't even know basic things like how to write their name or are able to recite their phone # & address, let alone count & sing the ABCs. They can't tie their shoes, zip or button their coats, put on their boots or mittens, & some have not even been exposed to basic socialization skills & have no clue how to act.

It's the parent who is the embarrassment in this story, not the schl or tchr. If your 6 yo is unable to do even a rudimentary job of cleaning up after an accident & prefers to sit in it until Mommy comes to do it for her, that isn't the schl's skill to teach. And at this pt in the schl yr a child should have learned the concept of grp lav breaks & tried to go whether they had to or not. It's understandable that the odd accident can happen, but this mother & many of the commenters are carrying on like it's the tchr's fault for not being psychic.

I suppose it never occurred to you that it was your job to explain to your 6 yo the basic concept of empathy?

What your daughter did was bullying. She said a *mean thing* to another student & *didn't understand* why saying mean things was wrong.

          That's not the tchr's fault.

So I kind of doubt any of the rest of it is, either.

I also don't think you're qualified to critcize the tchr's classrm mgmt plan when you sent your 6 yo to schl w/o instilling basic socialization skills & don't appear to have a plan to do so. Kids don't get sent to time out *repeatedly* & tchrs don't call parents to *tattle* on them when they're little angels in the classrm.

Allison Shaw if this was your child how would you feel? Unfortunately some of your brethern flunked common sense 101. And they seem to be finding ways to show off their stupidity in the news every week. So it is your union FIX IT. I won't say all the trouble I've had with teachers for my kid. We had some good ones and one I told the only thing wrong with my kid was her eyes were the wrong color. I've had a situation where my child had 8 different teachers in the second grade. One day a friend ( the schools drug counselor ) walked in and found 32 eight year old kids in a room by themselves being monitored by PA system. And this is what you call education? Scar tissue in my generation nobody went to pre-K, Headstart didn't exist. To add to that my second grade had 72 kids in it. That nun did just fine without teachers aides or any other help and we did not fall behind state standards. In fact we could walk around todays state standards tests. And graduated HS without Google or Wikipedia.

You people! My mother would have went up there and hit the idiot teacher. You think I'm kidding? My sister has a glass eye and when she was 8 years old a nun once slapped her across the face and it affected her good eye. My mother punched that nun in the face. It was 40 years ago. I love my mother :)

It is quite evident that the majority of people here do not understand the job of a teacher. With such little information we've all formulated our own views on what actually happened. Did someone somewhere in here actually say that teachers are greedy? if a teacher is greedy they sure chose the wrong profession. It's sad how little we value our educators. It's the self-serving parents and their like-minded children who are going to eventually ruin the school system. Being a teacher in America is a miserable task because they answer to irrational parents, gutless admins, the government and even their children. They're expected to raise their students, but are stripped of the necessary tools to do so. My wife is a teacher. She used to teach Kindergarten. She loved those kids, but she wasn't even allowed to give them hugs (school policy) for fear or prosecution. How sad is that? There's a reason teachers aren't generally as close with their students as they once were, and it's not for lack of caring.

Bob - the public school system is irrational. It is full of political football. There is a rigid system of rules based on experiences of that school that requires your kids to be conform whether that which is required really makes sense today. Good luck getting it changed, more likely if it does change, it will make even more people unhappy with what is changed. The best bet is to pay to get your kid somewhere where the rules are reasonable.

School has to be a partnership of the community, the staff, and the parents. The parents are the people who are purchasing a service with tax dollars. It really needs to go back to people directly purchasing the services instead of the services being purchased through government mandates. Under the public school system, Somehow, those who really care get short changes, whether it is the teacher, the kid, or the parent. And we are the poorer nation for it.

@JimP1969 - the bell curve demands that there are at least as many poor teachers as good ones? That claim rests on a very shaky foundation, namely, that below average is equal to poor. I'm willing to assume that the ability levels of NFL players follow a bell curve, but we can reasonably certain that there's not a single poor football player in the NFL by any reasonable definition of "poor".

lol @ justmythought - oh, the horror that a 6 year old had to sit for a few minutes with a pant load of BURNING poop, you drama queen. How any of us ever live through the horror of potty training without being SCARRED for life is a such a mystery! I'm the hard-hearted, unfeeling monster that thinks that perhaps when a teacher has 30-40 6 year old kids to oversee, dropping everything to address one unfortunate accident probably wasn't possible. They did the correct thing and called the mother. Perhaps you need to spend some time around children - you might not be so quick to want to lynch the teacher after a few hours in a grade school classroom.

Thom, as for my "blaming the victim" - there was no blame, but there was a wee bit of common sense and appreciation for what grade school teachers go through every day. Now, in addition for trying to teach overcrowded classrooms with shrinking budgets, teachers should be nannies and nurses too, and all this on a minimum wage, according to Elpea.

              There. Any typos? ;)

I feel so bad for this poor little kid. This teacher needs to fired! Not supended or given an admin position. Clearly the teacher lacks common sense, critical thinking skills and is exhibiting signs of being an effing nutjob and all around crackpot. How does one deny a child the right to go to the bathroom and then watch the child soil herself and then makes her continue to sit in it. Never cleaned her up and never called the parents. THIS IS TOTAL BS!!!! No, not a pun. I'm damned mad about the treatment of this child! You know she will never forget this thing, it's traumatic just reading about it. You know what, sometimes the only option left is for a good, old-fashioned butt whupping to take place. This teacher should be glad I live far away from her.

But also, there would have been no need for any of this if someone had a brain. My suggestion? Fire the teacher so she can have time to locate the Wizard of Oz to see if he has a spare.

If a parent allowed ...no wait, in this case MADE their child sit in it's own filth for over half an hour, Child Protective Services would be called...so why is this different for a teacher?

And to the idiot who said it wasn't burning the child's skin, wake up, why do you think babies diapers are changed immediatly? Because poop will burn the skin if it's left there any length of time.

Reading this, and all the assinine responses given by those who are defending the teacher just makes me even happier that we've taken my 6 year old out of Public School and have him in a very wonderful Private School! And before ya'll start up with the attacks (that I will on find humor in), a year after taking him out of the Public School that he was attending the TEA (Texas Education Agency) stepped in and gave everyone in our town the ability to choose to go to any surrounding school districts at no cost. And a huge portion of that decision was based on the "teacher" that was teaching my child. She & the principle REFUSED to abide by the Doctors & Educational Specialists who oversee my child, while I wasn't the one who contacted TEA, I did get an attorney and I went to every meeting that referenced my child. Parents, do not fool yourselves into thinking every teacher needs to be believed & respected, this is just not the case, go with your gut, go with what your child tells you, go with physical ques you get from your child when you take him/her to school. If things aren't right, do what you have to to make the changes you need for your childs sake! Children should love school, they should love learning & they should at least really like the adults who are there to guide them when they are at school...if they don't...don't assume it's your child's problem. Remember, not to be so quick to blame the child, not when there is an adult in the picture who is supposed to be highly trained to deal with children. If we don't protect our own children from the jerks out there in the world...who will?

@ Dean the teacher sends the child to the nurse's office, that is how she helps without leaving a classroom full of children or calls the nurse to come to the class. This removes the child from the classroom, and the nurse calls the mom for a change of clothes. But, had the teacher let the child go to the restroom to begin with, none of this would have happened. If that teacher had done that to my kindergartner, I'd hand her a$$ to her with my kids diarrhea on it. This poor child will have to endure the humiliation of this for years to come. The other students will remember this "incident." Thanks a lot teacher for giving the bullies a reason to now bully this child.

Lulu, get real. Not all moms are just sitting around waiting for baby to make a doodie. Infants and young children often have dirty diapers for longer than 30 minutes.

                Pedestrian -in-SF,

Do you know why diarrhea is liquid? Because it is mostly bile, stomach acid, that the intestine did not absorb as it should due to some type of disturbance in the digestive tract. Sitting in bile for any significant amount of time will eat away at skin, and that teacher made her sit there until the test was over and then another twenty minutes until her mother could get there. Read the article, or at least the main points of each paragraph. It clearly states that the 5 year old girl was sitting in the mess for "the remainder of test time, about 15 minutes, then she was called after the test, and it was a 20-minute drive to the school, according to KY3-TV." exact quote. 35 minutes is more than enough time to cause a rash which is the beginning of the break down of the skin, if this happened in a nursing home or hospital the state would be called in and the mess would hit the fan. There is no excuse for what this teacher did, these children are too young to sit through these tests and these tests aren't even required of them, she chose to over step her boundaries and then to humiliate a child and she should be punished for it.

It has been reported that the teacher is a ardent Republican with Romney bumper stickers on her car. She offered to strap the kid to the roof of her car, pull over at a service station and hose the poor kid down when she stopped for gas. The compassion shown by the tea/pub candidates to their animals and ex-wives are rubbing off on their supporters

Wish I could remeber exactly what month this occurred so I could look it up in archives. There was a story about I think a 2nd grader who's teacher had a policy only allowing her students to use the bathroom 3 times a week other than scheduled bathroom times, (lunch time and at recess) if you used used your 3 times by tues or wed you weren't allowed to go at all except lunch and recess the rest of the week so a student ended up wetting themselves. The parents went off on the teacher and I think planned to sue. Posters here on msnbc went nuts. Insisting that the child should be able to "hold" it, damning the parent for not teaching the child better, name calling the parent etc.. Insisting that children that age should be able to manage their urination and bowel movement etc. and this was about 90% of the posters. Those that thought this policy and that kids this young could mange to "hold it" was BS were name called and slammed as derelict parents as well. Most were insisting that kids use going to the bathroom as an excuse to roam the halls and cause trouble. My how people change their tunes at a whim!!

My kids elementary school had a bathroom in every classroom housing students k-3rd grade. That just makes sense. Lets the kids go when they need to without roaming the school unsupervised and prevents accidents that humiliate small children. In this particular article it makes NO sense that 6 year olds are doing 3rd grad practice tests. They just don't have the attention span at that age much less the ability to manage their bodily functions that well for extended periods of time. Kids that can't trust their teachers to support them when needed end up being miserable as students and less productive. I'd rather be the teacher that the kids love and respect than the hated bathroom nazi.

Yes, this is a terrible thing, but I'm here to tell you that I know for a fact that people are just people no matter where you go. And I also know a lot of mothers here in the south that would be really upset and angry if their children had been done this way. BTW, I've lived all over America and I've seen hicks in every state I've lived in. I'm here to tell you, I live in Ms and I have friends of all colors and all sexual orientations and this is a small town. So tell me, are all cases of child abuse in the south? I cannot see why people like you have to judge things by geography, race, whatever. That is so ignorant and I'm a pretty enlightened southerner.

From answers.com: Sadly it wasn't King Solomon or even Wright's mother who came up with that, but rather Abraham Lincoln, who was paraphrasing Proverbs17:28, which says, "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

Yahoo!Answers states: This is a very old maxim or adage, and it is not possible to attribute it to any one individual. Although some credit this quote to Abraham Lincoln, others to Mark Twain, and others to Samuel Johnson (apocryphally) , it evidently is much, much older than all of these, and they are probably paraphrasing from Scriptures, or repeating an old adage.

Quotation Page contributes it to Abe.

Ask.Yahoo! states: A page titled Mark Twain and the Mutating Quote attributed at least four variations of the same phrase to the eminently quotable Twain, explaining that it was a case of "split personality" that accounted for the variations, rather than a rash of misquotes. Other pages suggested a number of other authors for the saying, including: Abraham Lincoln, George Eliot, Groucho Marx, Albert Einstein, and a mysterious figure named Silvan Engel.

Perhaps that is good advice for everyone to follow, including you.

If this child was ill, why was she in school? If she had just gone to the restroom, why would the teacher think she needed to go within 15 minutes? Stuff happens. Teachers do not have to clean up after kids that mess in their pants. However. Kindergarteners should not have to participate in a test. Haven't we seen enough problems from these standardized tests?

You don't have to be ill for diarrhea to strike, sometimes it just happens. The teacher, at the very least, should have taken the little girl to the office where she wouldn't have to suffer humiliation.

I can guarantee you, if that had been my child that teacher would know she screwed up, and I wouldn't have to utter a word.

Sofablue: A few things: 1) kids get sick in school sometimes. There have been several times when my kids have gone to school, only for me to be called a while later because they got sick at school when there were no indications that they were ill before going to school. It happens. 2) The teacher made the child sit in her diarrhea for 15 minutes for the end of the testing period BEFORE calling the mother. Accidents happen, but the teacher should've immediately made sure the child made it to the nurses office and the the parent(s) were called immediately. 3) Kindergartners were NOT participating the the test. The teacher of this class opted to make up her own rules and make the kindergartners adhere to the testing schedule that older kids were having to deal with.

Sofablue, kids get sick at any time of the day or night. Mine sure never managed to get sick or hurt during regular physician's business hrs. They got sick during school after being perfectly alright in the morning. It happens.

I'm a teacher myself and if a student tells me he/she is sick I send him/her to the office right then. If a students says he/she has to go to the bathroom I ask first if they can hold it for a few minutes. If the answer is no then I give them a pass and send them to the bathroom. If its during a test and they aren't sick, they aren't allowed to make up the time. I teach 3rd-6th so they are old enough to know to use the bathroom between classes.

And this is why parents decide to home school. Terrible teachers with terrible attitudes. There are many good teachers but the bad ones cause the whole education system to look bad.

...home schooling is only okay if you don't intend for your child to obtain a college degree or any professional career. My nephew was "home schooled" for primary and secondary school but, he couldn't hack the social life in college nor the academic load. It was like another planet to him. You may not think that the public or private school system actually does anything useful (like my sister in law) BUT at least schooled kids can handle normal social situations, which comes in handy when trying to maintain a job and interact with society. And, most kids get an inkling what the real world is like. Why anyone would WANT their child to fail in life is beyond me. Isn't it our responsibility as parents to guide our children to be the most productive members of society that they can be? Not exposing them to "dangers" is more detrimental that the dangers themselves.

My sister didn't quit her job to home-school her kids as she was already a stay home mom and wife. I don't believe in home-schooling as it is important for kids to socialize and when I was a regional manager for a retail store I had more problems with employees that were home-schooled. They knew as much as the employees that went through public school but they didn't have the socialization skills that their coworkers had.

THat is rediculous that she was allowed to go to the restroom. When my chid was little she had bowl problems and was even told by a doctor to make sure that she stay a little longer on the toilet ( you know kids they have to hurry). i informed the school of this and also let them know that when she had to goshe had to go and that if needed she would just leave. Thank god it never came down to that. I hope this mom and her child get more than an apology and that something is done. I have always liked my kids teachers so glad she never had this one.

The kids I know who were home schooled excelled in college. They were able to function just fine socially. Then again, they were part of a home school network. A lot of people seem to think homeschooling means the kids stay at home with just mom, but that's not true in a lot of places. In a lot of places there is a large network, and the kids get together for groups where they learn together and play sports together, etc. My daughter was not homeschooled. For one thing, we were afraid we would kill each other; for another, she went to a good school. However, because I didn't send her to the failing public school we were zoned for I got the lecture from some people that um, yeah is giving: that I wasn't exposing her to enough "danger" for her to succeed in life. Those same people were zoned for schools that were ranked much higher, of course. My daughter went to a leadership program by herself in NYC when she was a teen and did just fine. She is succeeding fine. I want to know: exactly how much "danger" should we expose our kids to anyway? And how do we know when they have had enough danger? Should we deliberately seek out dangerous situations so that they can get enough "danger"? Please, um, yeah...!

BTW, I was abused by my father, so it was more dangerous for me in my house than in any school!

um, yeah..... I have a friend from high school who was home-schooled up until high school. She is now a Judge Advocate for the US Army. She has been successful. She went to a private college prior to joining the Army. I don't really think it is fair to assume that home-schooled children can't/won't obtain a college degree or any professional career.

Why are people knocking homeschool? It's great. You can have a better social life than at public school. There are all sorts of homeschool co-op classes and scout troops and you can also sign up your kids for homeschool enrichment classes, sports, and various extracurricular activities. It's still the "real world" only better.

I pulled my son out of school after 2nd grade for just this sort of crap (no pun intended). I made the decision to homeschool him while I went to college full-time, worked part-time. I taught him his lessons on the weekends. He did his assignments during the week at his caregiver's where he interacted with and helped take care of other kids. His social skills were by no means affected. When he went back to public school in 5th grade, he tested at an 8th grade reading level and 9th grade math. Homeschooling CAN be done without quitting your job (although I firmly believe raising your child IS your job) AND homeschooled kids are no more socially inept than some of the kids I've seen beating the crap out of each other on the bus and the playgrounds. If that happened to my child, I guarantee that teacher would have a restraining order on me in a heartbeat.

You're an ignorant bigot. Hope your folks didn't spend a lot on tuition.

Both my kids were homeschooled. Both valedictorians of their high school graduating classes. Full-ride scholarships to private university, finishing magna cum laude and summa cum laude. Both well paid professionals.

Oh, and if you do a little research (I assume you are literate since you're posting to Newsvine...) you will find that homeschooled kids test 20-30 percentile above the norm in comparison to children that attend public schools.

Pass my thanks to your sister in law for watering down your family genes...

Homeschool can either be a great experience or a nightmare depending on who's doing the teaching. I know some parents whose children are excelling as a result of homeschooling. On the other hand, I've also seen parents who attempt to homeschool, only to have to beg the school to take the kids back the following year.

If you have access to these co-op classes it can be great but there are a lot of kids that don't have access to this. There are a lot of school extracurricular activities they may not be able to attend unless the school district allows it. When I was going to school along with my siblings the kids that were home schooled weren't allowed to join any of the high school extracurricular activities. Plus in a number of states the education the child is receiving isn't monitored. I've read about a few states where there are children that are said to be home schooled but actually the parents aren't really doing much in the way of education. It is sad when you meet kids in their teen years and they can't add nor subtract double digit numbers. My wife will agree with me as she use to be a CPS worker and she would ask me what the laws governing home schooling were as she could legally remove a child from the home if the parent wasn't making sure their child was being educated to state laws.

Studies can be skewed very easily and this is one area that it can be done. Nobody truthfully knows if home schooling or private schools are better than public schools. Private schools don't have to follow federal mandates unless they receive federal funding. Private schools are able to accept children they deem worthy to be in their school. Home schooling can be great if the parent that is doing the teaching understands the subjects. I would be able to teach and help a child with calculus but how many parents wouldn't be able to do the same. I would probably have to say not may would be able to help their child.

I would agree with both Steve and Dean that it probably does depend on who is doing the homeschooling and what services are available, just as it would depend on how good the school is. You can't paint the entire thing with one brush.

seen too much - One college instructor of mine went over some of the studies about private schools doing better than public schools and he said that what they are doing is comparing apples against oranges. Private schools are allowed to accept the best kids where public schools have to accept all children. Public schools have to teach kids that can't speak one word of English along with kids that are disabled where the private schools don't have to teach any of these children. When the students from both types of schools are tested the private schools most likely will test better as the public school tests have all types of children being tested.

Today schools have the "No Child Left Behind" to worry about and even that is hindering schools. If a school tests poor enough the parents can demand that the school district to transport their child to a different school. I know schools where this has happened and what is funny is that some of children that couldn't speak or write English were being bused to another school the original school started to test better and the other school's testing results went down. This rarely happens in a private school setting as the school doesn't have to follow federal mandates of who they accept unless they accept federal funding.

My other girlfriend whose family business was on the state fair circuit home schooled her children on the road and they turned out just fine too.

I have personally met about 100-150 kids in the past 5 years because of my job. They by far outshine the public schooled kids both in social interaction, the ability to carry on a logical conversation, and general intelligence. Not to say there aren't some smart kids in public schools, but overall they just seem more mature.

Home schooled kids should test better than those brought up in public schools. There's no way to argue against a one on one learning experience. Public educators are trying to teach 20 kids of varying ability all at the same time in such a way that all 20 kids will respond to. Home schoolers receive a very personalized education. Why anyone is surprised with those results is beyond me.

The people who knock homeschool are people who know nothing about homeschool... its just something government school (public) kids do; they like to critisize things they dont know about. I know because I used to be one.

I remember a girl peeing in her chair in the 3rd grade because she wasn't allowed to go to the restroom.

I'm not sure a 5 year old can be "humiliated', I would argue that those emotions have not developed yet, but any child SHOULD be allowed to go to the bathroom upon request.

I also think grade school teachers should be required to have children themselves... and 'no', pets don't count.

I agree Rick. We have an educational system designed to fail led by the "Larry, Curly and Moes" of administrative education and their henchmen in the school rooms. It's little wonder why our kids get a "Third World" education and jobs are had by Indians, Chinese and others holding work visas from all over the planet. My kids (now all grown) once told me of a teacher who, when asked to use the toilet, gave the kids going to the restroom a toilet seat to wear around their neck while gone. I personally remedied that situation with the school board. It seams that the "system" will let the bullies have their way both at the teaching level AND by those seated in the classrooms. The INCOMPETENCE boggles the mind.

The teacher(s) involved should be fired. They have no business dealing with young children if they cannot understand that young children can and will have to go to the bathroom at times, and will not always listen to you when you tell them to go beforehand.

Also, diarrhea could be a symptom of a more serious medical condition, such as Crohn's disease. Some effects of medical conditions cannot always be controlled, especially not by someone so young.

Now this poor kid will probably be bullied for the rest of her childhood unless her parents change schools. Sad...

Then I would presume you would be willing for your schl taxes to skyrocket to insure there is a tchr's aide in every single classrm?

And sign a waiver that if anything happens to your child during an unsupervised bathrm break, you won't sue the schl district?

Otherwise, the kids are going to have bathrm breaks in a grp b/c a tchr cannot stop tchg & escort one child to the toilet while leaving the rest of the class unattended, nor can they permit one child to go alone.

I'm sure if that were the case here, the mother would be screaming loudly about it. And if it were the case here, then it would be the mother's fault for not getting a dr's note in to the schl health office about the condition.

Now this poor kid will probably be bullied for the rest of her childhood unless her parents change schools. Sad...

O please. It's Kindergarten. I guarantee you there's probably more kids in that class who have already had accidents by this pt in the schl yr than there are kids who haven't. I have yet to meet an adult who spent their academic career being bullied for something that happened when they were in K. Schl will be out shortly & next yr the girl will have a new tchr & a new grp of classmates.

Not to mention a teacher who enforces mandatory testing of Kindergartners.

Not a tchr on this planet wants to *teach to the test*. They were forced to do it due to the implementation of No Child Left Behind. Even kindergarteners are not exempt from standardized testing.

Personally, I don't think teachers should get paid until they pass yearly academic fitness tests.

They do. It's called *continuing education* & it's mandatory, in addition to that master's degree & the varying levels of state certification that must be achieved b4 a permanent certification is granted. And it all comes out of the tchr's salary, just like all that cute stuff hanging on the walls in the classrm.

If they can flunk students, why shouldn't society be able to flunk them?

That's like saying every boss who has to fire an employee who won't follow rules & won't attend mandatory training sessions should be fired as well.

There's this thing called *standards* & if a child is unable to meet them, all a tchr can do is recommend they be held back. It's the parents who have the final say over it. If they don't want their kid to flunk, then the kid gets to move along & fall further behind.

Why would any of that happen? Any teacher that would let a child sit like that deserves to be fired at the least. Your rebuttal to what was said is pointless.

Unless it hasn't been diagnosed yet. Even still there is no excuse for letting a child sit like that for any length of time.

And scar_tissue is a PRIME example of why bullying continues to exist and FLOURISH in our schools. a teaching "professional" who doesnt see how this child is going to be bullied for years in this school because to see that would mean that they might actually have to do something about the bullying in schools.

PS scar ... if a nurses aide can have their license permanently revoked for doing this to a senior ( ie elder abuse) then this is child abuse for making her sit in it 15 minutes before calling mom and then the next 20 minutes waiting for mom. Nurse's office should have been called immediately to help this poor kid clean up.

Your continued defense of this scum bag "teacher" is reprehensible and un-excusable. If you are a current teacher GET OUT OF THE PROFESSION. There is no need for yet another uncaring insensitive blind "teacher" out there scaring and harming our children.

the parent is humiliating the child also by taking this to the media. this is a private matter that the parent could have taken care of in private. it happened to my child in k also and as i have read these comments it has happened to lots of children. don't take this to the media and complain that your child has been embarrased then add to it yourself. be a parent stand up for your child go to the principal if that doesn't work there is the board of education.

@ Scar_tissue there was no reason for those children to be tested, it was a mock session. Standardized testing is not mandated until the 3 rd grade. In most states maybe not the one where this occurred kindergarten classes have a teacher's aide AND usually a restroom right in the kindergarten class.

There are plenty of opportunities for parents, grandparents and just concerned adults to VOLUNTEER their time to act as teachers aides in schools. Would help if more people were willing to take the time to do so.

School needs to be taken BACK out of the control of government and the unions, that would be a great start. Then they would be able to discipline the teacher for haneous acts like this.

Saying "the child's kindergarten teacher was sticking to MAP testing guidelines in efforts to simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come" just doesn't cover stupidity.

The teacher followed protocol, the protocol is ridiculous. How can you reprimand an employee of the state for following the rules from the state? Now, as a teacher, I would not have handled that they way she did, but teacher's sign forms promising to uphold test security and acknowledging that they can lose their job for not upholding test security... that puts this particular teacher between a rock and a hard place.

Also, I do not feel it is a teacher's job to clean diarrhea off of a student -- school nurse, maybe, but not teacher.

There was no protocol to follow. It says right there in the article that the test isn't administered until third grade and the teacher chose to stick to the requirements that are set when the test is officially taken. There was no signed forms. Where did you get that? I think you're a teacher.

The child was not part of the MAP testing in progress. The teacher wanted to simulate to conditions. Zero excuse for this so called teacher. This was a 6 year old! Maybe that's why the testing isn't in place for students that young. It's not the teacher's job to clean the mess? Who's job was it to look after the welfare of the student while they're in the teacher's care? Don't want to clean it up? Maybe she should have let the child go to the bathroom instead of in her pants.

Actually, these rules didn't apply to the kindergarten class - only those that were doing MAP testing (which begins in 3rd grade). According to the article, the TEACHER opted to follow these rules for her class as a lesson to the kindergarteners to be prepared for what they would have to face in a couple of years.

svd: Diarrhea = sick child = help from compassionate school nurse. Nurses are trained to deal with sick people who often have issues with bodily fluids, especially when they are only six. Any school nurse too squeamish to deal with a vomiting child or child with diarrhea needs to find a desk job.

Samantha and svd, if someone in that school could not help that child get cleaned off, then something is seriously wrong! I am a physical therapist; and, even though it is certainly not my job to empty bedpans or change adult diapers, I have done it quite a few times if it will help a patient with treatment or even if a patient of mine is really uncomfortable. I have also helped clean many a patient. Sometimes you just go above and beyond. What kind of person would I be if I just said, "Not my job," all the time and left people there?

Schools cant afford to have a nurse in daily anymore... the nurse was probably at an alternate school that day..

All in all this is a 6 year old kindergarten child...

This was a 6 year old! Maybe that's why the testing isn't in place for students that young.

Au contraire. There is standardized testing taking place in Kindergarten.

It's not the teacher's job to clean the mess?

                                            No, it's not.

B/c that involves touching a child's *private parts* & leaves a tchr open to abuse accusations.

By the time a child is old enough to got to schl, their parents should have taught them how to clean up themselves in case of a toileting accident.

B/c I guarantee you no adult is going to do it for them in any schl, not in today's climate where everyone thinks tchrs do nothing all day but molest students.

Since when does school nurse=poop cleaner? This is a medical professional trained to deal with sick children and administer medications.

Schl nurse isn't going to clean it up, either. It is the child's responsibility to clean up their own person, no matter what type of *mess* they've made. It is the parent's responsibility to make sure their child knows how to do this b4 their child sets foot in schl.

Nurses are trained to deal with sick people who often have issues with bodily fluids, especially when they are only six. Any school nurse too squeamish to deal with a vomiting child or child with diarrhea needs to find a desk job.

It is a desk job. Sick children get sent home. Very sick children go off in an ambulance. It's not a hospital.

And it is not an issue of *squeamishness*. It is an issue of parents screaming *child molestor* when an adult is alone w/ their child behind a closed door (surely we don't want the child to strip down where passerby can see, right?). Why do you think the health office door is always open?

a baby .. still just beginning her educational experience...

I HOPE THE TEACHER GETS FIRED!!!!!!

A 6 yo is far from a *baby* & it's nearly the end of the schl yr.

The tchr has done nothing to get fired. She followed schl policy. Policy, I would remind ppl, that is largely determined by the state & the parents, not the tchrs.

The issue is not that the teacher wouldn't clean it up....she a. wouldn't let the CHILD go to the bathroom so there would be nothing TO clean and b. made her sit in the mess. Good grief!

@Brian - If you are simulating the test, you have to follow the same rules. A child getting up to go to the bathroom is disruptive. That is why they have the kids go to the bathroom BEFORE the test starts. This child refused. The worst part is that once this child gets to 3rd grade & does poorly on the test, the parent will complain that the school didn't prepare her well enough.

You've obviously never been in a classroom. If you didn't have rules about bathroom breaks, kids would be traipsing in & out of the classroom constantly.

Poor kid! I wonder if the pressure to adhere to the testing rules affected the teacher's judgement. Our mania with testing and all of the rigid standards and rules that go with it cause crazy stuff like this to go on. After all, teachers are now judged and rated on how the kids perform on tests and heaven forbid they get accused of cheating because they allowed a child to leave the room! The kid probably had the runs from being nervous about the testing. We need to stop this testing stuff and let the teachers teach, and let them use their brains, creativity and training. It worked in the old days and kids and teachers (and parents) were much happier with the results!

Amen to that leonhl! Also, the United States turned out a much more educated group of students, equipped to be successful. The "testing" has turned the classroom into a mill for spitting out answers. We, as a nation, have lost our creativity and drive based on SOL tests. What a horrible thing to do to our children and the teachers in their classrooms!

Because kindergarten is usually the first time students enter into a formal
school system, teachers have virtually no information about the skills they
have. So as scary as they may seem, assessments are important. It makes sense
for teachers to want to find out as soon as possible, in some cases before
school even starts, what your child’s capabilities are. Once a teacher gets a
snapshot of what each student can do, she can plan her lessons accordingly.

Here's a list of some commonly assessed skills, that are key to informing
teachers and parents of a child’s capability level.

I remember from my school days some kids would claim a "bio -break " was needed when they didn't really need to go... It was just a way to disrupt class, (they made a production out of standing up and sauntering to the door, then made a spectacle of just shutting the door. They got nailed for it sometimes, but they always had that "embarrassment" card to play and the teachers risked trouble if they wouldn't let them "go". I know one guy who intentionally peed his pants just to put the zinger on the teacher - "I TOLD you I had to go!" So was this girl already a discipline problem? Was she the innocent little angel horribly wronged byt the heartless teacher? We can't tell from the article. But It might give some pause before blastign the teacher over this.

Jim, Jim, Jim - have you ever had diarrhea? Not something you can control, especially if you are only six years old. Leaving her to sit in the mess for an extended period of time was completely uncalled for and downright unsanitary. I wouldn't be surprised if she develops a urinary tract infection from this. If the mom had done this, she would be charged with child abuse.

Every child who has been *potty-trained* has the *ability to hold it*. Otherwise everyone would still be in diapers.

Can they *hold it* as long as an adult? No. Their systems are smaller & therefore hold less. But they can hold it.

And if they really can't, then the parent should have a dr's note on file at the health office stating so, so that arrangements can be made to accommodate the child.

Plus parents need to stop thinking the schl is going to teach their child everything there is to know & step up to the plate w/ some preschl instruction. Every schl-age child should be taught how to clean themselves up in the event of an *accident*. B/c no one in the schl is going to do it for them.

And if you think a small child would have diarrhea in their pants to get attention your very wrong and even a little "out there" for suggesting it.

It sounds like you are taking this very personally. What have you done in your classroom that was deemed inappropriate? It seems as though you have no respect for children or their parents. Yes, children are taught to go to the bathroom and clean themselves up. I gather you never had the privilege of soiling yourself in school because the teacher denied your request to use the bathroom and leave the classroom until your day was through. I assure you when this happened to me I knew how to clean myself up. Sometimes children cannot hold it. I had a stomach problem that limited my bathroom time and when I had to go, I had to get there but my teacher obviously did not care. Please spare everyone your rant about teacher's, the government and school policies. I think we all pay enough in taxes to not have our children tortured in our school systems. I am beginning to think home schooling may be a better idea than I ever thought. If people like you are out there our children are all better off at home. I am certainly glad not to be a resident of your school district.

The teacher should be made to sit in a room full of people until she soils herself.

This doesn't surprise me at all. Here in the Fort Worth ISD we do the same standardized testing. They have the kids so afraid of asking if they can leave to use the restroom. It is so bad that the kids are treated so badly. They are not allowed to talk during lunch on testing days. they march down to the cafeteria like prisoners, get their trays and march back to call all while being told to keep eyes forward and not to talk. Even prisoners get a recess of sorts, our kids are forced to sit in the hot classroom all day on tests days except to for picking up lunches.

I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't more bathroom accidents because of these tests. The reason I know what happens in the Fort Worth schools is that I work in one.

Home schooled children are really the ones being treated unfairly. The lack of interaction with students and teachers and a "real curriculum" with educated teachers. Moms cant do that. Moms should be moms at home. These kids are being selfishly deprived by their parents. Not just in educational terms but basic human interaction with others other than family. Its sad actually. We have home schooled children living across from us and you never see them. They dont play with the nieghborhood kids or even come out of the house. Poor kids. Their will always be a bad apple on the tree. Just the way it is. This child will learn something valuable from this. A child that never sees it is more lost and with less knowledge in his or her lives have a tougher time dealing with social situations.

These state mandated test are ruining and turning teacher's brain into mush. They focus so much on the "test", everything else is secondary. In this case, I guess she didn't think that quite a few 6 yr old children can not "hold it" for 15 long minutes! I know some adults can't even do that! Let's send her to High School so she can try that on a 16 year old!! Whoa! We'll see how THAT turns out..... (Wonder what other things she subjecting those babies to??

Six year olds CAN hold it. I subbed for years and never once had a kid have an "accident" when I wouldn't let them go to the bathroom on a whim. And a six year old is NOT a baby. That's part of the problem. People treat children like babies when they aren't.

A six-year-old with diarrhea is not the same as a six-year-old who simply needs to pee. Wryview, have you ever tried to hold in diarrhea? It's hard for adults to do, so I can imagine the agony this child must have gone through.

Thankfully, you only subbed for years and weren't responsible for children all day, every day.

Shame on you wryview for denying a child a toilet when the need arises! You must feel so important deciding who legitimately needs to use the restroom and who wants to go to the bathroom "on a whim". REALLY?!!! I remember being in 3rd grade when a boy asked to go to the bathroom and the sub asked him to wait. About a minute later he peed in his pants, dripping onto the floor. Yeah, those 3rd grade tests are so stinking important. Why teachers refuse to let children use the bathroom is beyond me. It's inhumane and cruel. Sadly, I have a feeling this is pretty common practice which is completely unacceptable. It should not be tolerated!!!

This is completely, and utterly WRONG. She could have a medical problem. I have Crohn's disease & when the urge is there, you cannot wait, not even a split second. If it is determined she does have a medical problem, it is against the law to deny anyone to use a restroom if they have a medical need to. (Ally's Law) The teacher needs to not only apologize, but be reprimanded. No child should be treated that way, EVER for any reason.

It's obvious many of you have NEVER been in a classroom. You can't have kids going to the bathroom any time they feel like leaving the room. I bet you're the same parents who complain that teachers aren't doing enough teaching. It's a little difficult to teach ALL the children when they aren't in the room. It is also very disruptive.

Mac - I'll have you know that the teachers in the school where I subbed used to fight over who would get me as their sub. Theyknew I would maintain the same standard of discipline that they followed and they wouldn't have to give busy work on the days they were out. The lesson plans were followed & the teachers did not have to re-teach anything that was in the plans the days they were out. I know this, because they told me so.

With your one, idiotic decision, you have sentenced this child to be bullied for the rest of her childhood. I hope the parent's pull her from your school and while I normally don't advocate this, I hope they sue the everloving CRAP out of the school district for emotional distress. Do you even remember what it was like to be a kid?!? You think this poor little girl will ever forget pooping herself? You think the other kids in her class will?
