Catholic nuns group 'stunned' by Vatican scolding for 'radical feminist' ideas

The Catholic Church accused the nation's largest organization of American nuns of espousing "radical feminist" ideas. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the charges with Sister Jeannine Gramick, who was once silenced by the Vatican, and Jeff Stone, communications director of Dignity USA.

A prominent U.S. Catholic nuns group said it was "stunned" that the Vatican reprimanded it for spending too much time on poverty and social justice concerns and not enough on abortion and gay marriage.

In a stinging report on Wednesday, the Vatican said the Leadership Conference of Women Religious had been "silent on the right to life" and had failed to make the "Biblical view of family life and human sexuality" a central plank in its agenda. It accused the group of promoting "certain radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith."

It also reprimanded American nuns for expressing positions on political issues that differed, at times, from views held by American bishops. Public disagreement with the bishops -- "who are the church's authentic teachers of faith and morals" -- is unacceptable, the report said.

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a "doctrinal assessment" saying the Holy See was compelled to intervene with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious to correct "serious doctrinal problems."

The nuns group, based in Silver Spring, Md., said in a statement Thursday on its website, "The presidency of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious was stunned by the conclusions of the doctrinal assessment." It added it may give a lengthier response at a later date.

The conference says it represents 80 percent of America's 57,000 Catholic nuns. It is influential both in the United States and globally.

Academics who study the church said the Vatican's move was predictable given Pope Benedict's conservative views and efforts by Rome to quell internal dissent and curtail autonomy within its ranks.

"This is more an expression of the Church feeling under siege by trends it cannot control within the Church, much less within the broader society," University of Notre Dame historian Scott Appleby said.

That includes a steady drumbeat of calls to ordain women as priests, which the pope has reasserted was an impossibility.

The Vatican named Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain and two other U.S. bishops to undertake the reforms of the conference's statutes, programs and its application of liturgical texts, a process it said could take up to five years.

This all has nothing to do with spirituality, or with staying faithful to Christ's teachings. It has everything to do with a tyrannical, power-hungry bureaucracy trying desperately to hold onto its position. The Vatican is spiritually bankrupt, and it wants the rest of us to pick up its bill. As for the Pope or his representatives handing out advice about sexual matters, that is just laughable. The priesthood is either celebate, or engaging in felonious sexual perversions. Neither of these choices qualifies the Church to say a word on the subject of human sexuality. Let the Vatican first get the log out of its own eye. Perhaps then we may be more interested in its opinions.

You said it! It says in the Bible to kill the homosexuals, well if they so believe in the word of God why aren't they getting rid of their boy screwing priests??

Hi sorry, I have to leave now so can't write long response. Please note that killing homosexuals is in the Jewish testament. The old testament is the root of our faith and we love the Jewish people, but the commandments in the old testament were superceded by Jesus' teaching. Peace and have a good day,

The anachronistic church just took five more steps into the past. What a total joke.

As you can see from the post above, I was correct. These posters are uneducated and crude. The poster writes that the Church should be ignored, but wastes his/her time writing about the church. Or, as agreeing with me, indicates that he/she belongs in a protestant church. This is fine. It's just interesting that this person seems to feel the need to waste his/her time writing about a church in which he/she has stated he/she has no interest. This seems to indicate some sort of unresolved issue with the Church's morality or our Lord. We need to pray for this type of people, but if they decide to be outside the Church, so be it, that's their decision. And reason dictates, as well as respect, that they should leave us Catholics alone and refrain from profanity. Use of profanity only shows that a person's vocabulary is limited. Pax.

Am wholly in support of the sisters carrying on as they have. This just once again proves there's no separation between church and state politics, the latter having nothing to do with human welfare in the honest sense of the Word.

if the axiom is "when in rome, do as the romans do", then wouldnt the next logical step be "when in america, do as the americans do"? and if i really dont understand how people can be a slave to religion, then i REALLY dont understand how a american catholic can take orders from a figure head from another country

The real mission of the Church is to help people, but to do the right thing. The Church should not be seeking to tickle the ears to keep harmony - truth must be spoken even if it is not popular. The Pope and the other males within the Catholic Church need to remedy their tolerance of homosexual pedophiles that have infiltrated instead of sacrificing children by while allowing them to be run over by the perversion train. Nuns and other females of the Church need to stand up for what is right - the nuclear family and our future - our children. Protect them from the deviant behavior choices of homosexuality.

I am not a Catholic, nor do I support a lot of what they say. That being said, if you want to be part of a group, be it religious, political or social, then you are expected to abide by the rules of that group. If you don't agree with what the group does, then you get out or form your own sub-group. These are women who presumably grew up in the Catholic Church and are well aware of the Churches stance on various issues. To complain now about the churches policies makes no sense

Catholic leaders have a lot in common with Muslim leaders. And like the Muslim faith, the Catholics are very backwards with a lot of the modern worlds beliefs.

This is why people are leaving the Catholic reglion for I am one even graurated from catholic school and when all this started wth the young I pulled myself and family from the church. If the child is from a rape, or it endanges the mothers life no amount of force should be allowed to force the woman to have that child.

It is way past time for religion, especially the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim varieties, to fade into obscurity. Let superstition and ignorance of the masses give way to a culture that values education and the ability to think for one's self. People have the ability to tell the difference between right and wrong, the just and the unjust. Religion should no longer be allowed to hold morality hostage. People do not need religion to act justly. Believe in god if you must, but religion has outlived its usefulness as a device to keep the populace under control.

The Catholic Church, the first and original Big Business! With a CEO and executives that, like any major oil company, looks at the bottom line as the 'be all and end all' of everything! The ONLY reasons the CC refuses to come out of the dark ages about birth control and family planning is they see EVERY human being born as a unit of currency! One in which many people are already born clasped in their clutches and the rest they will try to convert!

Why don't some of you gung-ho Catholics go take a visit to an Abbey or a Monastery and see just how some monks and Nuns live.. See how they have to grow their own food, gather wool and spin yarn, make their own clothes and medicines which they use to help the local population that can't afford to go to regular doctors.. You think I'm full of it, that this is the 21st century and none of this goes on anymore? Of course it does! Every Abbey and every Monastery MUST be self-supporting DESPITE the fact they are part and parcel of one of the WEALTHIEST organizations in the world!! For every damn dollar YOU donate 90% of that money goes into the coffers of the church hierarchy and will never see the light of day!

And all those old men in Vatican City? They laugh at you, they are beyond wealthy because of YOU and they are beyond powerful because of YOU! Like nearly ALL major religions from the Mormons to Islam, they have USED their parishioners to become wealthy beyond avarice and their influence reaches to the tops of governments all over the globe.. Of course, they DON'T thank you, you are, after all, their sheep, their 'flock', trained for thousands of years to continue to take care of THEM! They laugh at you for bowing down to them and supporting them in comfort.. They are happy ruling over you like some ancient, but hardly, benevolent, kings of old.. Step out of line and they will excommunicate your butt in a second flat!

One of the main reasons they won't allow women into the hierarchy? They are terrified what will happen if women are allowed access to all the evil the church has done and is still doing since it's inception.. No women is going to remain silent when given access to that kind of information and all of humanity would come to find out just how long it's been 'played' by one of the most vile 'corporations' on the planet!

I guess, when it comes down to it, the only way this outrageous institution will be brought to it's knees is when Catholic women everywhere begin to really wonder what the REAL reason is the church doesn't want to grant them into it's secretive inner circle.. As generations pass and women everywhere are granted more of their God given rights to be equal with men more of them are going to leave this out-dated, tradition-bound, ritualistic cabal until nothing is left but old, old men hoarding their centuries old, ill-gotten gains like some mythical dragons of yore..

Come on, all you Catholics gals, stand up and start asking the BIG questions? Don't let the church leaders or even your husbands and boyfriends intimidate you! Ask why? Why aren't women allowed to serve in the church's hierarchy? Why is the church REALLY so dead set against birth control? Why has the church destroyed and/or hidden whole chapters of the Bible written BY WOMEN? Where in the bible does it say women can't run for the office of Pope?? Ask them all of these and a thousand more! Time to make the church start spewing out the answers to some long-held secrets!

If the Catholic faith is professing Christianity, then where are their Christian values. Don't you think Christ is more concerned about feeding the hungry, clothing and sheltering the poor, and helping the needy rise above their desperate situations than whether or not a person is gay and women's or men's choice for reproduction.

I would think the Church has more concerns with their male leaders who abuse their power by molesting innocent children, make outrageous statements about government leaders and oppress the freedom of speech allowed in America.

Sisters unite and keep faith. Jesus would never turn his back on you for the good you do for society. If the Church wants to turn their back on you, their loss.
