Man who last saw missing Fort Bragg soldier in custody on unrelated charge

Authorities in North Carolina have stopped searching a local pond for missing Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux. NBC's Mike Viqueira reports.

Nicholas Holbert, the last man to see missing 23-year-old Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux alive, turned himself in to police and was in custody Friday afternoon on a charge not related to Bordeaux’s disappearance, NBC News reported.

Holbert, a convicted sex offender, was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center in Fayetteville, N.C., for not updating authorities with his address as required under state law.

Bordeaux, who is married, was seen with Holbert at Froggy Bottom bar in Fayetteville Friday night, NBC-17 reported, and the two rang up a bar tab of $28 that night, for four shots and four beers, according to the bar owner, who would not give his name.

Holbert was not a bar employee but lived in a tent behind the bar and came there often, NBC-17 reported, citing the owner.  The tent is no longer there. Holbert wasa convicted at age 16 for indecent liberties - or knowingly causing another person to have sexual contact - with a 5-year-old child.

Earlier Friday afternoon, Bordeaux's brother said there was little progress in the search for his sister.

"Everybody’s doing the best they can with the resources and the manpower to try and find Kelli… safe and sound," Matt Henson, 29, said at a press briefing. But he conceded that it was "frustrating" and urged people to come forward with tips on his sister's disappearance.

Bordeaux was reported missing Monday when she did not report for duty at Fort Bragg. She is a combat Army medic with the 44th Medical Brigade.

NBC - 17

Nicholas Holbert, 25, is the last person known to have seen Kelli Bordeaux before her disappearance. He is in custody because he changed residences without informing police, which he is supposed to do as a convicted sex offender.

Authorities questioned Holbert, 25, who said he drove Bordeaux home the night she disappeared, according to WTVD-TVin Fayetteville. He reportedly denied any involvement in her disappearance, saying he dropped her off at the entrance to her neighborhood.

Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine told reporters at a press conference Thursday that Holbert is one of the last persons that had contact with Bordeaux, and said anybody who saw her early Saturday morning is someone they want to talk to.

Bergamine said there were more than 20 people at the bar that night and that police knew some of the names, but not all.

Bergamine would not say if it had been Holbert's tent had been confiscated for evidence.

He said the Fayetteville police have "no new leads."

Police searched a pond Wednesday night and Thursday morning, without result.

The family of missing Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux holds a news conference to discuss her disappearance.

Henson said that Bordeaux’s husband, Mike Bordeaux, who is a civilian, was also involved in handing out fliers and searching for the missing soldier.

Asked if there were clues that his sister was having trouble or had a past of going missing, Henson dismissed the idea.

"There was no indication that anything was out of the ordinary," he said. "She loved life. Everything was good."

Henson said he remained "hopeful that she’s just being held hostage … maybe hurt but is going to be OK."

This is why my mother always warned me about going to bars without any windows! Haven't ever been in one, and do not plan on changing that rule for myself, or my daughters. Hope this case gets solved, and has a "non-graveful" ending. Way too young and ambitious to be gone....sorry to her friends and family.

This is why my mother always told me never to go inside a restaurant/bar - that does not have any windows.

Sorry to her family and friends, for having to go through this - hope it ends in a "non-graveful" outcome. That would be really amazing to find her; alive and well - remember, it's been a week since this occured. Possibility of finding her now seems like it would be hopeless. If she has been held captive for a week, chances are she would not survive, unless someone was taking care of her (very grim situation) :-(

Father God please bring Kelli home safe, to her family and friends. "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 niv

In the first place, she should have never gone to the bar by herself... that's an invitation to trouble if I ever saw one... especially in times as bad as they are now. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family during this time. The possibility of finding her alive after 48 hours is very slim.

I feel like I've met the guy before but I'm not sure why.

Perhaps that is because you, and a lot of other guys, would LIKE to meet him...if you know what I mean. I know I would.

He does seem to have a familiar face, but that's true of a lot of people.

I pray that the poor girl is found safe and unharmed, and that her family doesn't have to go through any more pain and torment, that POS if he did something to her they should turn him over to the special ops group so they can use him for hands on, hand to hand and jungle survival training

This guy is already screwed. They have locked him up on a technicality until they can manufacture enough evidence to charge him. If he's guilty than so be it but why is it that he wasn't locked up before this case if he was out there living at a new address? He had a job at that bar and collected a check so why was he allowed to remain free if his address didn't match the official documents?? Sure hope they have evidence they aren't sharing otherwise this looks like another example of abuse by the man

This is the state that is in the process of literally taking the death penalty meted out to those convicted of a capital crime off the books e.g., the Racial Justice Act whereupon the vast majority of the convicted sitting on death row will have the opportunity to have their sentences reduced to life imprisonment in the name of ''political correctness.''

Odds are that if this soldier is found murdered, the person(s) responsible will get a ''slap on the wrist'' much like the infamous Eliza Baker of N.C. She was convicted of killing and hideously dismembering her 10 y.o. stepdaughter and disposing the body parts in the backwoods like so much garbage. She received 14 years imprisonment for this crime!

When a person is young at that age, they feel invincible, especially if they are in the service. I know I did in the Marine Corps. And in her job helping people like she does, they tend to see the good side, not looking for the darker, ugly tendencies in others. I sure didn't at that age either. We never see how bad life is compared to how it used to be and things will still get worse until we are older. It’s part of being young, and not having the luxury of perspective. But it's scary who we end up befriending and never realizing how dangerous they really are until something awful happens. An unguarded moment, the right opportunity, or bad judgment call can strike so close to home for any one of us. This is a wake up call for everyone to remember and caution our loved ones. Earnest prayers for her and all those trying to help bring this wonderful soldier home safely.

I am not convinced that guy did it. I want more info on the dynamics of her marriage and if in fact he was really out of town. Whenever a woman goes missing and her husband is out of town its suspicious. If their marriage was so good why did she go to a bar alone and leave with a stranger? Typically a man doesnt go visit family without his wife. There is more to the story and too much focus is put on the sex offender. He apparently touched a 5 year old. She was a bit old for him...and you know trained to kill. I am not defending the guy AT ALL. Dont get me wrong...I am just saying look closer to "home".

I don't get it. Her husband is out of town, so at 1:30 am she's out drinking shots and beers with a sex offender who lives in a tent? And some folks are saying they think she's OK? Strange things are happening.

In some Cases and States, Armed Robbery without death, can carry a much more harsh sentence, than 1st Degree Murder. Armed Robbery in some states, the sentencing is at the Judge's discretion, and the Judge could impose a sentence of 1-99 years for Armed Robbery.... in some states someone convicted of 1st Degree Murder, could possibly be out, in much less than 20yrs... Ciao

I have to agree with alot of the opinions here that she should have had her bahonkey at home instead of out partying with ANYONE! Especially a convicted sex-offender. I still hope & pray that this is a situation that finds her alive & well. Although it doesn't sound like a good ending is to be had. It's a shame that a shortcoming or character defect of hers may have cost her the ultimate price... :(

whoa guys first I would bet that she didn't know he was a sex offender and as for drinking 28 dollars on a tab is pretty laid back to me. I have ran a bar tab of almost 200 with the lady next door and took her where she wanted to go, and it wasn't right in front of her door.

She is/was 23 and cute and she was drinking with a 25 yr old guy who isn't bad looking who isn't her husband.

I think cops already have the right guy, unfortunately. When will the US get it regarding what booze does to people? I once read an article about our overburdened courts. The judge interviewed told the reporter that if it were not for alcohol and drugs, his case load would be 90 per cent lower.

I once knew a family destroyed by their only son's murder of a guy who was drinking in a small local bar with the ex-wife of the shooter. I once had neighbors whose son was murdered at a bar. In spite of all my warnings and how I raised them (no booze or cigarettes in home, good church time, etc.)-my own kids have experiemented with booze and had harder times as a result. They have had many friends who drink often and are not getting anywhere in life.

Alcoholic Anonymous meetings are held so often all over the nation, (some locations have several meetings a day) that I now wonder if any of them are really helping, or if the alcoholism is now hopelessly entrenched across the US. It is entrenched in many nations as well, but we definitely have a bad problem with it here, I know that for certain.

My property sits at a corner that has a bad accident almost every year which is booze-related. I have personally called cops several times to come help people who were lucky enough to survive destroying their cars in the wee hours across the street from my house. (I live a mile one way from an "inn" and a mile the other way from a popular tavern.)

Alcohol destroys. People do things they might not have done otherwise.. This young soldier is gone, people. And I think this poor kid who was drinking with her knows that. He looks like he feels bad about something.

Another very sad tale of youth+booze, seems to me.

It's not PC to say this but it is dangerous for women to be alone especially drunk at bars. The US is a violent nation anymore. This is the proof.

I served in the miilitary as a MP for nearly a decade. I am still married to an active duty soldier. There were some of you that asked why she was out by herself in a bar, drinking with another man...do we even have to wonder? She is most likely deceased, which is horrible to say but if this man was living in a tent one can only assume there was something wrong with him emotionally, mentally or otherwise. She may have merely been lonely, lived close by and wanted some socializing, but knowing what I do from my years with military affiliation...I assume she was looking for someone to warm her husbands side of the bed. I hate to make such assumptions, but I have seen this very thing too many times to keep count. Both males and females in the military have fidelity issues and it truly is disturbing. When I was stationed in Korea, a new soldier would arrive and they would be sad for the first day that they were away from their spouses and kids and then that night they would be out on the town and hooking up with another person. Seen it time and time again! I hope she is safe and that he is innocent, but that hope is more of a wish than anything else.
