Spirit Airlines
Spirit Airlines used the Secret Service sex scandal to promote flights to Colombia.
Spirit Airlines issued an apology and pulled a racy ad spoofing the Secret Service Colombian prostitution scandal that many people found offensive.
The Secret Service said Friday that three of its agents under investigation for allegations of misconduct in Colombia have resigned, NBC News reported. In all 12 agents have been implicated, including one who was "cleared of serious misconduct" but will still face administrative action, the agency said.
Spirit Airlines' ad featured women in pink bikinis around an agent implying secrecy and the slogan "More Bang for your Buck" for flights to Cartagena, Colombia – the location of the scandal – as well as other destinations.

At this weekend's ExpoColombia in Miami, community activists said the businesses and tourism being showcased there is what Colombia is all about, not prostitutes.
“I think it would make anybody angry,” activist Fabio Andrade said. "Colombia's more than this. We have worked so hard to change the image of Colombia. We have worked so hard for Colombians to come and tourism to come. The airlines are working very hard to bring tourism to our country, and to do this is denigrating. And people are very offended by this."
12th Secret Service agent implicated in prostitution scandal; three more quit
Spirit Airlines released a statement saying that at the Colombian government’s request, "Spirit pulled its ad yesterday, and we meant no disrespect to our many friends and valued customers."
As new details emerged about the growing scandal that has already taken down several presidential bodyguards, the U.S. Secret Service worked behind-the-scenes on Capitol Hill Friday to salvage its damaged reputation. NBC's Mark Potter reports.
The airlines flies from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to four cities in Colombia.
Several Colombian-American women told NBC 6 the scandal is embarrassing, but Colombia is not the one with the tarnished reputation in this case.
"I just think it’s an embarrassment for the United States agency. That’s who is guilty. Not anybody else," Martha Yepes said.
Myriam Hernandez noted that every country has prostitutes, "not just in Colombia. It’s everywhere."
"I don’t think it reflects badly," said Lauren Santa Cruz. "I just think people need something to talk about, and this is just something that’s happened."

One way to advertise for both parties, use their airlines and you can hook up with a hooker. Shame it teed some people off. Wonder if they booked full flights with that ad.
FUNNY; A SENSE OF HUMOR IN ADVERTISING, SORRY the secret service took it personally.
did they? pay-up and shut up are you kidding? 800.00?
I would fly Spirit, based on the ad alone. And I find it disingenuous that Columbians are incensed about the ad. Their people are starving, and their three biggest cash crops have no nutritional value.
Funny! Tasteless, too. I laughed heartily. Sorry they offended the Colombians. That's Madison Ave.
hahahahaha..I thought it was funny, the airlines didn't cause this..the secret service can blame themselves only.
Next thing you'll hear about is a secret service beer, candy bar, video game, jeans, bra's, sun-glasses..and a Ford model secret service hooker VAN.
I'm already making T-shirts of it..that's why I never said it in my last comment.
saxon and john,
Spirit pulled the ad at the request of Columbia. I'm sure the toughness of the guys who would take a bullet for the Pres. aren't taking a little ad for a little company as any personal affront.
This is actually a perfect match as flying Spirit Airlines is like going it on a third world airline or a Russian piece of crap. The welded over ashtrays on the armrests should have been a sign but it was evident when the wing creaked and crunched against the plane body at 30,000 ft.
I'll pass on this junket and say they have no business "spoofing" anyone.............
I'm sure Spirit Airlines got a lot of new customers from that ad...knowing how men really think! I won't judge women who prostitute since it takes two to make one anyway. But I do frown on the judgement of these agents who felt it was okay to screw around on govt funded work travel whose aim was to protect the president of the U.S. Clearly they felt they could get away with it, so this wasn't their first time.
This would have been grounds for instant dismissal from any private corporation.
Is this going to be the 'New reality', "I'm offended at everything and this means you have to censor yourself and back down because of my hyper sensitivities!".
Look folks, this is all relational manipulation and coersion to force others to behave the way Political Correct Minded Cultural Dominators want them to behave.
Hypocrite Regressives (Progressives) should stop talking tolerance and start tolerating!!!
Progressive = Ultra Hypocrite!
Gotta love MSNBC "journalists".
"Puilled" is new word for "deleted".
No proofreading and No spellcheck! REALLY!
sounds like my X-wife a whore, and I didn't even know it
Oh look, it's the "We're Extremely Offended" story of the day. Yawn.
Sounds like a great place to go for a little hanky panky.
Having to pull this ad which was a good, funny idea is ridiculous!! I am sooo tired of the PC BS!! Many of us are reaching our limits with these PC idiots. If you are offended by this ad, many of NO LONGER CARE if you get offended! TAKE YOU PC BULL.... AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR @SS
Well, I'm glad that Spirit Airlines had to pull the add because it's deceptive advertising. Everyone knows all the airlines have a surcharge for prostitutes, along with checked luggage, pillows, blankets, and a stale cookie as the only source of food for a six hour flight.
You can hardly blame anyone even the secret service. These woman are very exotic. I hope they make lots of money now. I am about ready to buy a ticket out of here myself!
These....hmmmmm...women aren't where I'd wanna lose my health.
OMG, this was funny. Can't people take a joke.
Why should the Columbian goverment be upset. Prostitution is legal there. It was the US presidential body guards and secret service agents that were in the wrong(expecially the married ones).
Kudos to Spirit Airlines for this ad! It’s funny and clearly illustrates the SPIRIT OF
THE FIRST AMENDMENT of the American Constitution! And my regrets for the fact that Spirit had to pool this add down! It has always amazed me how the dems and libs would claim
the burning of the American Flag as the First Amendment right, but would attempt
(and succeed more often than not) to quiet anyone who says or does something not to their liking! I never flew Spirit but now for me: ‘It is only way to fly’! I ask everyone who agrees
with me and has business in the destinations serviced by Spirit Airlines, to use
them and only them!!! Go Spirit Go!
WE have Senators and Representatives complaining about the way the secret service personnel conducted themselves in Columbia, do they operate under the same standards when they are out of the country conducting our business?
I must admit I found the ad funny, but I also understand why some would object to it. I am sure that Columbia does not want to be associated wit this kind of thing -- but as pointed out by others here -- what else other than drugs do they have to offer the ionternational touriist industry?. Of course, I have heard about this on the news, but am not that well informed about the details. Should these agents been "screwing around" while on duty --No. Should they be fired -- sure. Should they have "paid for services rendered"? - yes. If they had, this whole thing would not have "hit the fan". I appreciate that their trip was funded by the American taxpayer , but I am not clear on if they were using taxpayers money or their own money to (legally) engage the service of these ladies. To those who are using these to attack President Obama -- Please grow up -- The President had nothing to do with what happaned.
I perceive a government "crackdown" by the administration of President Obama on freedom of speech and freedom of expression. This ad spoofing the Secret Service was pulled at about the same time that Ted Nugent was "un-invited" from appearing at a scheduled concert in Fort Knox Army base, the Army officials said Nugent's appearance would be a conflict of interest since the Army has to be "APOLITICAL", yet plenty of other artists in the music industry called Hilary Clinton a "bitch" and that she was "irrelevant, called Senator McClain and former Preident George W. Bush rotten things too, but the Army still allowed those malefactors to perform Fort Knox concerts.
It does seem rather petty and thin-skinned of him.
Nugent has his rights of free speech, but even if he don't like Obama or voted for him ( neither did I)..he is our leader of our nation and we all should respect that no matter their opinion on any sitting president!
There never be a president where even 75% like him/her..never will happen in the USA..but they have to respect if he/her is our leader!
If you don't respect our leader, you're not an AMERICAN CITIZEN.
I am so sick and tired of having to explain this to people:
Freedom of Speech =/= You can say anything you want and nothing bad can happen to you. It means you can't be arrested for what you say. THAT'S IT! It doesn't protect you from being fired. It doesn't protect you from people using their Freedom of Speech to criticize you. And it doesn't protect you from people that don't want to associate with you because of what you say.
Spirit Airlines had every right to make this ad. Did anyone get arrested? No. But they got some negative feedback and decided it would be in their best interest to stop that ad.
We have Free Speech, not Consequence Free Speech. It's amazing how many people there are that "are American patriots that want to follow the Constitution" yet have absolutely no idea what the Constitution says...
Mr. Williams -
I was a citizen before Mr. Obama was born and will remain one while I live. You cannot disenfranchise me!
Mario, I don't think Mr. Williams said just Obama but all sitting presidents (some way before you were born). To me the respect is there unless they are impeach or resign is disgraced.
Mike -
Mr. Williams said, "you're not an AMERICAN CITIZEN." I did not mis-read him.
Calling Hillary a "bitch or irrelevant", saying "W" is "mentally handicapped" or that McCain "don't belong in any chair unless he's paralyzed" is very different from speaking to a crowd of half wit, knuckle headed, gun freaks about "being in jail or dead" if Obama is elected again. I am a hunter & I wouldn't be caught dead hanging around those NRA whack jobs!! Did you watch the video of those morons? They stood there nodding their heads like a congregation of brain dead Sunday revival meeting members! I would not be surprised if one of them or a Tea Bagger takes the Ted's cowardly underling suggestion and shoots someone before the election!
Respect the President. Just as you do in the military, you salute and respect the rank, even if you don't like the person.
Do you really think Obama himself is responsible for getting this ad pulled and having Ted Nugent's concert cancelled? With all that a President has to think about and act upon, I doubt any of them -- Republican or Democrat -- would know what entertainer is playing where or what airline is running what ad. I really doubt Obama was responsible for these things, any more than I think Bush II was responsible for getting the Dixie Chicks' concerts cancelled a number of years ago. These decisions are usually made by lower level political staff who do things to "keep the boss happy." And before you go saying that that kind of atmosphere comes from the top, let me just say that's not necessarily so. Happens all the time in the corporate world: some mid-level manager takes it upon her/himself to smooth something over to keep the CEO happy, and often CEOs get ticked about wrong actions taken in their names.
Come on. . . it doesn't take a lot of thought to understand the concept. CEOs don't know every little detail of what their employees do, and neither do Presidents. You don't like Obama? Fine. But that's no reason to disconnect your logic and reasoning functions.
Lizzie, You're so true and logical. Therefore the right wingnuts will never believe you. Latest email I got from someone who watches faux news stated (with a You Tube video) that Obama's health bill will require us all to be microchiped with all our info. Something like the mark of the beast thing. Sheesh, people.
LizzieFromBoston,
Obama personally? No. But the culture he's helped create and nurture? Yes. You reap what you sow.
Sorry John Williams. I consider myself a proud American and I have ZERO respect for the sitting President of the United States. I really don't think that takes away my right to be an American citizen - especially when I pay a boatload of taxes. I hate everything that P.O.S. stands for. America after Obama will be a weaker nation - just like it was after FDR and just as it was after LBJ. Liberalism is a disease of weakness.
madd-dawg - I agree with your point concerning Spirit Airlines. They were informed by an entity that is not a part of any US government that the entity (Columbia) found their ad offensive. Spirit Airlines decided to pull their ad. No problem, that's how the market works and there was no infringement of free speech in that transaction.
I would point out though that several posters have made mention of the recent decision of the United States Army to cancel Ted Nugent's participation in a concert at Fort Knox because of negative comments he made concerning President Obama. In that case a government agency (I assume you'll agree that the Army is part of the government) is making a hiring/firing decision based on the speech of a private US citizen. This is the definition of infringement of free speech. Contrary to your assertion, you do NOT have to be arrested for the government to infringe on your right to free speech. The Constitution does in fact protect you from being fired by the government for things you say as a private citizen. I suggest you study the meaning of the Constitution just a bit more deeply.
Antigolfer -
I don't see the difference between one kind of namecalling and the other. They make attacking the messenger their only message. "Stop name-calling, you namecaller!"
Mike277 -
I am older than all the presidents now sitting. But that's just arithmetic.
If you own a boat, plan to pay a boat load of taxes.
Actually joemike404, that does not fall under freedom of speech.
Think about it. If you went into work and called your boss an idiot and started swearing at him, you would be fired. The government is the exact same. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say you are protected from being fired by the government for what you say.
Or think of it this way: Think if Ted Nugent had been hired to become a spokesman for Coca Cola, and he then makes public statements about how Coke is awful and Pepsi is a million times better. Do you think Coca Cola would keep him?
Seriously, it doesn't. Please name 1, just 1, Constitutional clause, amendment, law, or court ruling that says you can't be fired by the government for what you say. Hint: you won't find any.
What you will find though is many cases of Officers and Soldiers alike that were discharged for saying ridiculous stuff about their superiors. There are MANY cases of people being fired from the government for saying stuff they shouldn't have.
Johnwilliams you are sooo wrong I DO NOT have to respect ANYONE that has not earned it. Just because you hold any office or position does not mean you deserve respect!
You are correct Madd-dawg17. Imagine if the military allowed someone to perform for troops that made disparaging remarks about the Commander in Chief, how would that be explained?
“Congress shall make no law...abridging freedom of speech.”
This is what many Americans refer to when they want to insult someone else, however when your speech becomes hatefilled/inciteful you can be held accountable for it. Since this did not happen in the U.S. the arguing over free speech is moot.
For the ones that are getting twisted up over the seperate issue of Ted Nugents remarks about President Obama and think that the President has a vendetta against him are not very intelligent to put it mildly. One need only look back to legislation that has been on the books since 1861 that detailed actions taken against Americans whose actions were considered un-American ( Yes that means you cannot bad mouth the President). Or just go back to 2003 when a few General officers were forced to resign from military service for publicly disagreeing with then President Bush over the Iraqi invasion. I realize that would mean you'd need to focus your attention towards something other than blaming President Obama for everything...
Is this the ask "Mario 69" minute? I doubt that anti golfer has ever hunted anything let alone fired a gun. I own boats and why should I pay extra to enjoy my free time. I work my ass off for everything I have. It is time we got our free ride for paying for everything and so many .
It would be like them taxing all these people that are on the internet. Gov should charge us all a dollar a day to use it. That makes more sense that everyone pay a little than a few paying a lot. Just saying.
No it would be alot better if they would quit spending our money instead and we ALL payed only a reasonable tax where everyone paid 5 - 10% max. No money should be going to to the UN, no government spending on foriegn aid unless maybe after a natuel disaster, no spending to bribe other countries to be good. About the only things government should be allowed to spend money on should be the military the only thing they are actually supposed to be doing. ANY revenue the government needed above 5% should come from tarriffs just like our companies pay to other governments to import goods, just like it was originally designed.
What we are seeing in the run-up to our election year is "CENSORSHIP" being exercised on political speech and artistic expression by powerful entities with big money, such as MSNBC News, for example. There is big money and people in power with democratic preferences who are the ones responsible to kill any negative message or disparagement of Obama and his administration, that's exactly what's going on here, and what you are seeing more and more lately in this election year.
Watch the English speaking version of Al Jazeera and BBC news reports if you want to get the uncensored version about recent news, but I'm concerned that I am spotting too many examples of censorship against freedom of speech and artistic expression and really think that the people being silenced should go to court and fight it. MSNBC News and their continued "Yellow Journalism" are among the guilty.
We are loosing the very liberties this country stands for. Vote OBAMA OUT in November
And vote Romney and all his Wall Street cronies in? Not a chance.
What liberties are we "loosing"? Despite your ridiculous assessment, no matter who you vote in, nothing will change. You may think that a particular candidate will change things or give you what you want but the position the US is in is not repairable. The entire financial structure has to be upended and I think blue collar people like yourself, the ones Obama is trying to cushion for the fall, will pay the price. He is the last thing between you and rock bottom believe it or not. Here you are trying to hasten your own demise. lol
As far as "Hastening my own demise" I am a disabled Army Veteran living on a federal pension, so you will fall harder and further than I. The point I made about dumping Ted Nugent, the Spirit Airline ad being canceled, and a Secret Service investigation into a Motor City Madman having been taken seriously about like similar things he has been saying since the 1970's, all this, in an election year, seems to look like censorship of freedom of speech and freedom of expression
sunnyd-159,
What about Obama's "Wall Street cronies?" You do realize that Obama was a 1%'er way before he was chosen President.
Sunnyd - Tim W. is correct. Obama has as many if not more Wall Street cronies than Mitt. Like so many non-rich libs who have their head in the sand, you just can't seem to understand that Wall Street is pretty much controlled by the East Coast Liberal Elite.
I can assure you that no one took it seriously, and it offended no one. Tiny little Spirit Airlines put out the ad, just so they could pull it. Which in turn got MSNBC and other networks talking about it. Good cheap advertising. Mission Accomplished.
Chris, You hit the nail on the head.
Some of Spirits other "Funny" Ad Campaigns (Seriously):
The MILF Sale - Many Islands Low Fares
The Mo' Ass Sale - The Mother of All Spirit Sales
They have about two new ones a week - It's worth signing up for their email alerts, just for a laugh.
Little's changed in the SS.
Wife: "How was your trip to Columbia, dear?"
SS Agent: "I could tell you, but then you'd have to kill me."
Its all about the big money and buying the goodwill of the leading national press with cash, as I'm sure the corrupt journalists of MSNBC News could fully tell you. A prime example of this is how Romney is the leading contender to the presidency, rather than Ron Paul, for example. Romney got the win because it takes big money to buy the votes of all the super delegates, you and I never had any say in choosing Romney or Ron Paul, see? We just idly sit back and let the presidency of the United States of America be bought by the highest bidder, and we all sit back and get spoon fed exactly what big money paid to the press wants us to hear. Have a nice day.
luckyboy, it was the Columbians who were offended and for whom Spirit pulled the ad, not the SS. Funny how our prejudgements cause us to misrepresent events.
Is it still funny, now that your whippin' boys were not upset?
Gets me all choked up! Thinking that those poor boys need a raise. Can we raise a special tax fund for columbian prostitutes. Maybe just a general hooker fund from the Halliburton budget. I would be willing to work as a contractor to train the secret service on what their " Foreign transaction " Should actually cost.
What's she talking about, I think it looks very good for Colombia, where legal, working girls can go complaint if they feel mistreated, better than turning a blind eye to prostitution as if they don't exist.
And for u Obama haters, he's, like it or not YOUR CURRENT COMMANDER IN CHIEF. U disrespect the Chief, you are un-invited to the party, no matter who's in office. Speak freely all you want.
I like it. Funny and topical. But I guess it's "too soon", as they say.
And all this because ONE IDIOT didn't want to pay his hooker.
That action earns you the "Douche Bag Of The Month" award.
Congratulations! And good luck finding your next job.
How do you explain that on a resume???
It's a cool ad. It's topical, nice double entendre, it certainly got attention. That's humor folks. Enjoy it.
What are they even doing spending money on "spoof ads?" If you have extra money to waste on BS, why not stop charging baggage fees and any other fee you can think of?!
Nice rack on that hooker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, but are they carry-on or checked?
Can anyone name the movie from that quote?
Personally, I loved the part of the ad where "up front payment was required" See, if the Columbians had enforced that, there never would have been an issue.
Nice rack? It's pretty disgusting that those tits have serial numbers on the implants.
Fake women are disgusting. Fake titted hookers are even more vile.
Mr. rrobeson -
Only fast food joints get paid up front. At full service resaurants you pay the bill presented afterwards. The same policies apply in prostitution.
I knew someone would find someway to make an anti-Obama post. Thank you logoslogic. Just FYI there's a differnece between calling someone a bitch and suggesting an assasination if they won again.
Im curious Larry- who suggested an assassination?
My dad first brought me to columbia many years ago! I was just a kid and the 80's were hot. Kennebunkport "snowed in July" if you get my drift?
Larry
If you are talking about Nugent what you said about assasination is a flat out lie period. Go read it again.
Anybody willing to take a bullet for the President is someone who should get laid when he wants to.
" Amen" to that !! Dick and I always had that same theory.
Looks to be an attractive woman. At least the SS had some taste.Unfortunately few brains in the upper area.
It's pretty disgusting that those tits have serial numbers on the implants.
Fake women are disgusting. Fake titted hookers are even more vile.
yea I'd like to get more BANG for my Buck. I assume ladies will provide special service for me during the flight. :-D
I find people that need things cencored because they don't have a sense of humor offensive.
VOTE OBAMA 2012 AND 2016!!!!
Yeah if you want to give up your first born and be in bancrupt by 2016! He waste more money and is just plain clueless! This country is a mess since he was elected and going down more and more every day.
Vote Romney 2012 and you will get a job! The US will be respected again.
Chris,
You do realize that it is illegal for Obama to run in 2016, don't you (unless he loses in 2012)? It is a little thing called the Constitution. (Hint: 22nd Amendment)
I hope that Scumbag Obama is GONE in November! I do NOT consider him MY president and I DO consider myself an American for that very reason! He has YET to PROVE his is a citizen! My birth certificated says Place of Birth, USA. He cannot say the same! The only thing he needs to run is Out Of Town!!
You are too ignorant for words, so I won't waste them on you.
Chris,
are you serious. You must be either out of work, a college student or on welfare. Question for you? How many terms can a president be elected to. How many years can a dictator sit?
Well the way that dushbag obama is going around the gop to get what he wants ,if he dose win.Whats to say the awipe dose not completely change the constitution.? Hell he has done more to change it than all other sitting presidents EVER.To all you DAs.Wake up.! He is destroying the USA. There are over 40 countries that want to see us fall. And obama has played into them with extra passion. He has spent more energy on giving illeagal immigrants rights than he has spent on protecting the tax payers. WTF. He has spent more money flying around the damn world in 4 years than the last 2 presidents did in 8 years.I dont care if he is the president. He dose not desreve it,nor should he be respected for it.He is just another step in the downward spiral of the great country. And for the traitors he has surronded himself with.I put them on the same level as Nixons scumbags.!
Who the hell names their airline Spirit? I'm not getting on any damn airplane that reminds me of my mortality before I even get on the plane.
Dustin...you need to relax...and maybe even take a few more Prozac!!!
Relax?!!! You want me to Relax?!!! Are you kidding me?!!!... Thanks TOPGUN for your advice, I'll take that into concideration, peace be with you.
To whom did they need to apologize?
To the secret service? No way they deserve the abuse.
To Colombia? They made prostitution legal so why apologize to them?
To the hookers? Why would the ad be offensive to a prostitute?
No apology needed - I say run the ad. It is hilarious.
I was going to write a scathing post on the same subject, however, thank you for doing it for me!
I SECOND IT! Yeah and the ad is funny!
Next time the Secret Service, won't hire JOE,MOE LARRY AND CURLY,to guard anybody!
