Valentine the sea lion, healed from bullet wound, released back to ocean

Valentine the sea lion, now healed after being shot, will be released to the ocean.

The California sea lion that was found with a bullet in her flipper has healed and was released back into the wild on Friday, according to SeaWorld.

The sea lion was rescued on Feb. 11 after beachgoers in Oceanside, Calif. noticed the injured animal on the shore.

NBC San Diego: Healed sea lion returns to ocean after being shot in the flipper

SeaWorld rescued the female sea lion, between five and 10 years old, who was lethargic and severely malnourished. Veterinarians stabilized her with antibiotics and X-rayed the wound. They found a large bullet fragment lodged in her flipper.

Specialists removed the bullet from her flipper and bandaged the wound with a purple wrap with a pink heart on it. The sea lion began eating and managed to keep her bandage on – a challenge with animals.

Valentine the sea lion was rescued when beachgoers spotted her and now she's ready to be released back to the ocean.

The staff nicknamed her "Valentine" since she was rescued a few days before Valentine's Day.

After two months in the animal park's rehabilitation program, Valentine gained more than 40 pounds and returned to full health.

SeaWorld said they returned the animal two to three miles off the coast in a good feeding area where dolphins, sea lions and sea birds were actively feeding.

Investigators with the National Marine Fisheries Service are investigating the shooting, which they believe may have been an intentional act of cruelty.

They provide what they knew, she was injured and malnourished, they found a bullet fragment in her. They suspect she was intentionally shot. They put her age between5-10 years. She was nursed back to health, gaining 40+ lbs. She was released back into the ocean...... what other facts are needed?

pained1........They have pointed muzzles, making them rather dog-like. Males grow a large crest of bone on the top of their heads as they reach sexual maturity, and this gives the animal its generic name (loph is "forehead" and za- is an emphatic;Zalophus californianus means "Californian big-head"). They also have manes, although they are not as well developed as the manes of adult male South American or Steller sea lions. Females are lighter in color than the males, and pups are born dark, but lighten when they are several months old. When it is dry, the skin is a purple color. A sea lion's average lifespan is 17 years in the wild, and longer in captivity. By sealing their noses shut, they are able to stay underwater for up to 20 minutes. ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW??????

This is the best they could come up with on Earth Day? Like there wasn't some predator or something cooler like a sea turtle or whale?

Plus, the other Sea Lion's are going to be like, "purple with a pink star, seriously", so the animal will obviously be back for therapy soon.

I hope they didn't send this sea lion back into the wild unarmed. If sea lions were armed this shooting would likely have never happened.

Come on guys...loosen up. This was just a quick story about how an animal who was illegally shot, was rescued , given medical attention and released back into the wild. Forget about the purple bandage with a pink star ... it was just to add a smile to the animals' name.. "Valentine" I don't think they even mentioned "Earth Day" And "scientific info"... what for? Just take the story with a smile.. it was a nice thing to do for the creature. Don't drool on it. 'Nuff said.

Exactly. We better look out, our humanity is showing again.

It's a feel good story, and we need that. If all we wanted was doom and gloom, we would just read most of the Newsvine, especially the political stuff.

I hope Mother Nature looks after this little creature in a positive way. Best Wishes to all.

Disgusting that someone shot the poor thing, but uplifting that people cared enough to step in and nourish it back to health. Anyone that could do something that horrific to an animal isn't a person that I want to meet.

Yes Sandra, let's not "dwell" on people getting shot. It's so "tiring" all the gun violence that goes on everyday, all the llives that are lost, all the families destroyed. How depressing it all is; who wants to think about that stuff? Let's just smile and think good thoughts and push out of our minds the rampages, the gun battles with innocent children caught in the crossfire, the needless, pointless violence. Sorry about that Sandra, my bad.

Give it a rest, Leroy. Just because someone cares about an animal it doesn't mean they don't care about people. It's not mutually exclusive. Jeez, what a self-centered wet blanket!

Leroy, here is a difference. This article is about an animal getting shot...if you want to complain about humans getting shot there are a plethora of them out there, all you have to do is look.

In answer to your off the topic question though, Yes I do think it's horrible when an innocent human gets shot. As you could tell if you read any of my posts where there is a person getting shot. I have to agree with Robbie, just because I'm commenting on an article where an animal got shot, doesn't mean I don't care about a human. Again. This is an article about someone shooting an animal, not a human...learn the difference.

I always bring up human suffering on articles about animal cruelty when the animal lovers start wringing their hands over some varmint not being treated right, so shoot me! Many animal lovers actually care more about animals than they do about humans and readily admit this. I think this is sick. Human beings are starving, being tortured, murdered, mutilated, all over the world right now and I don't want to hear one second of whining about how some poor animal was treated until human rights abuses are an unfortunate part of our history. Animals are our food. Why do you animal lovers never complain about how pigs and chickens are force fed and crammed into crates like sardines to be shipped off to slaughter? Why are dogs and cats given human-like rights but pigs [who, incidentally are VERY intelligent and make great pets just like dogs] are not? Pigs aren't furry and cute like dogs and cats, that's why! You animal lovers are sick. How can any human with a scrap of decency care more about animals than their own fellow human beings? If one of your sons or daughters were captured and being tortured right now I'll bet my last dollar that you would not give one thought to animal rights until they were rescued. How about reaching into your twisted, selfish hearts and extending the same empathy to other people?

                      #5.10 - Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:10 PM EDT

If you don't want to hear about people whining about how some poor animal was treated, why read the article? You can't complain about hearing people siding with an animal that was abused when the article IS ABOUT IT. Don't paint animal lovers with the same broad brush, there are some animal rights activists that are completely COMPLETELY insane *coughPETAcough* just as there are some human activists that are insane. Here you are going around saying that people who feel pity and empathy for an animal are sick....what does that say about you? Empathy and compassion can be extended to all species including humans, the fact that you fail to realize that doesn't say much for your cause either.

LMAO at Pauline's naivety. I doubt any Commercial Fisherman would shoot them, especially commercial fishermen who take their Catch to Mexico to be processed because you do not want to be caught with a gun aboard your boat going into a foreign Country....Oh I never thought of that,,,of course not cause you don't know squat! Though their have been unsubstantiated rumours of local commerical fishermen taking a shot or two to keep the animals out of their nets.

I was once in a boat fishing off La Jolla in the Kelp beds where I watched these guys and scantily clad women on a $500,000+ Yacht with my Binoculars shooting at the Sea Lions for fun and having a good ole time doing it, therein is where you will probably find the guilty party..Probably out of La Jolla or Rancho Santa Fe or one of those Company owned Yachts. I also knew a man who was a Captain of one of those Company owned Yachts out of San Pedro whose entertainment offered Skeet Shooting and Glass Ball shooting where on occasion they had to halt the Executives from shooting at Otters and Seals up near Monterrey and Big Sur.

SO I give the suggestion that the Animal Rights People are talking through their hats when it comes to blaming something like this on Commercial Fishermen or any Fisherman without having any proof to back up what they speak...So I guess like the HSUS they'll go out and "Create" a situation to prove me wrong just like that last "faked" in my opinion "Secret Surveillance" tape of a Egg production facility...If I hadn't known what goes on in those facilities, and how often they are inspected by County Authorities, I would have believe it since it was so professional produced down to the taking pictures in the dark to act like they were doing it secretly or that the Chickens are kept in a dark atmosphere..Anybody who raises Chickens knows the conditions needed for Chicken to lay eggs and it surely isn't being kept in the dark...I believe the "Filmer" made the film to cover up his own lack of work for which he was paid to do as in keep the chicken coop clean or the owner was between finding qualified help to assist him/her in operating the business.

LMAO..and you people fall for this stuff all the time...gullible
