Things change. For most of our history, there was plenty of space and plenty of unskilled jobs for anyone willing to work hard. Immigrants were also a much lower drain on taxpayers ... no such thing as bilingual education and official government documents (including ballots) written in Spanish. But, as I said, things change. We don't need manual, unskilled labor as much. We need capital .. financial and mental. That's where our immigration policy should be focused. Automatic green cards for PhD's from American universities. Same for engineers. Green cards for those who start new businesses in the US that employ a certain number of people.

I have lived in Australia and New Zealand. There are no illegal immigrants in those countries. As quickly as they are spotted, they are arrested and put in camps. Less than 1% are granted the right to stay in those countries for any reason.

I am curious as to how many of you have looked at the face of illegal immigration. I have and let me paint you a picture of what I see everyday.

Illegal husband goes to work 5-6 days a week to a manual labor or somewhat skilled laborer (some are learning and developing trades in electrical, tile, home repair w/o any traditional training or certifications). Illegal Wife stays home takes care of the kids usually babysits 1 or 2 small children for around $20/day per child ($800 month tax free), cooks, clean and manages Dr appointments and shows up to welfare office with all paperwork completed to collect food stamps and medicaid. Welfare paperwork indicates wife is not married and therefore receives full benefits for all children and self if pregnant. Husband (earns $600-800/week) comes home with buddies from work and congregates outside of their apt with about 5 friends throwing trash and cigarette butts wherever they fall. Meanwhile kids are running amok and unsupervised. Saturday and Sunday is the big family shopping day (paid for with Food stamp card) then they continue their shopping only this time they are actually paying out of pocket for clothes and jewelry. They have multiple cars for husband (decked out with rims and stereo systems with fake tags or inspection). 4 people may have the same ID. I see a total disregard for the laws we have in place and a complete and total disrespect for people in authority positions.

Big picture, they are earning $3000-$4000 a month, collecting food-stamp and receiving free medical and usually living with an additional male in the household who contributes to a portion of the rent for a place to sleep, cooking and laundry service provided by the wife.

It has nothing to do with political parties of racism. It has to do with responsibility. If you work hard and are willing to contribute and work to become a legal resident then by all means welcome ( and i do see this, however is is a disproportionate amount), but if you are here looking for a hand out, then get out.

Commonsense: You do realize that the word alien refers to stranger or foreigner, don't you? It doesn't mean to blindly let them in and at the same time allow them to ignore the laws which the others must follow. I wish atheists would stop quoting the bible if they don't know the context.

You really are such a confused little man. Its not the individual that is solely responsible for stealing of identities and the other crimes, but they are criminals just the same. How hard you would cry if a bank stole your identity and screwed up your credit and finances. My white neighbor is much less unlikely to steal my identity than an illegal immigrant. Most illegals don't even know or live by the people that they harm. It appears to them to be a faceless crime, which makes it SEEM like less of a crime.

Aside from illegals lowering the standard wages on a number of blue-collar jobs ranging from construction to landscaping. Don't forget that most of them work under the table, they also use their kids' SSID numbers to apply for every government benefit they can. This costs states BILLIONS of dollars thanks to the numerous unfunded federal mandates.

If you needed a social security card to wok and it took 16 years to get you'd be working undocumented too, because you have to have money to live while you're waiting for ICE to get to your paperwork. Illegals are the ones who are undocumented AND have actually committed a crime; undocumenteds are here legally but ICE just hasn't gotten around to their paperwork yet, or they have lost or misplaced it in the 16 year wait time. To then penalize these people by incarceration and deportation when they are here legally would be unconstitutional--it's not fair to penalize someone for someone else's, or in this case, a government agency's, mistake.

I'm all for deporting the truly illegal--the ones who hopped the border, shot a cop, and deal drugs. But for those who are simply undocumented--came here legally and their paperwork expired but they are still waiting...there should be extennsions granted for thiose individuals and they shouldn't be deported until USCIS has looked at their applications and made the decision to deny right of residency.

I'm all for reforming how our nation handles immigration, making it easier for tourists to visit, and making it easier for the educated and oppressed who want to become Americans to emigrate here.

What I want to stop are simply two things

1. Remove the incentives for people to break the law simply to exploit an exchange rate advantage, a black market, and generous gaps in our social programs. This means going after individuals and businesses that break the law just to exploit these people.
2. Remove birthright citizenship simply for being born on American soil. No other nation does this! The only way someone should be able to become a citizen instantly is if one of their parents were already (or their parent(s) became naturalized while they were a minor) or they themselves applied for citizenship.

This article shows that if we went after the offending parties that hire illegal aliens, we could handily dry up the incentives for illegals to come here and many would self-deport just as they are doing now in the down economy.

American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. As for the $5000 you claim it costs to enter the US legally (not true), apparently plenty of illegal aliens are able to raise thousands to pay to the coyotes who bring them across. If they can afford that, they could afford to apply through legal channels, where the fees for a family-based visa run around $500.

I believe it has more to do with the amount of time it takes to get a worker's visa and visas for a family than the cost of acquiring those documents.

When you're dirt-poor and looking for opportunity in a wealthy country, there's probably a lot of incentives to taking the fast-track rather than the legal one.

On top of that, I bet that the smugglers do more advertising and spread a lot of misinformation about how difficult it is to do things legitimately...but that's just me guessing.

The Obama administration has addressed immigration with the following multistep plan.

1 - Made the politically correct term for "illegal aliens" to be "undocumented immigrants"

2 - Granted Aunt Zeituni Onyango citizenship, after she ignored a judge's order to leave the country

3 - Granted Uncle Onyango Obama a get-out-of-jail free card, which was used to be released from being held by ICE, even though he is in violation of a deportation order from 1992.

4 - Issued a presidential order which granted backdoor amnesty to as many as 300,000 illegal aliens in order to pander to Hispanics and Latinos.

5 - Filed lawsuits against every state attempting to legally address the illegal alien issue

6 - Created and proliferated a lie that they are deporting more illegal aliens that any other administration

If ever there was more evidence to show that going after businesses and individuals that hire illegal aliens to do labor for them would put a MASSIVE dent in the rate of illegal immigration!

We don't need to have paddy wagons haul off scores of people and uproot families in some sort of dehumanizing forced exodus.

Many illegals would, and are, self-deporting when the jobs dry up. If the US would stop allowing people and businesses to skirt the law and cheat the system, it would do better for everyone involved.

If the Federal government doesn't fight Arizona here, the next time that a state wants to do something that traditionally is a federal responsibility (say, foreign policy), the government's position will be that much weaker. When an issue is before the Supreme Court, the underlying case is often of little or no consequence .. it is the principle.

This news article is not news to me. I see the tendency everyday. People who has been here for years illegally are trying to leave and they are telling their people that the "American Dream" is dead.

I had read somewhere that the Obama administration reclassified some deportations to skew the numbers. In any case, the totals tell the story. Even without knowing the numbers, it has been obvious from other presidential actions that Obama is not applying existing law or making efforts to cut down on illegal immigration. I am also very upset about the fact that little or no I.D. is required at polling places around the country. This is turning our elections into a joke.

I reluctantly voted for Obama in '08. I don't believe the economy is his fault, although he has not done especially well in that regard and I am aghast that he has some of the very people who engineered the meltdown working in his administration. But illegal immigration is one potent reason not to vote for him in November. Then again, as in '08, look at the choices: Romney is already cuddling up to the illegal community, which not only knows how to milk the system, it knows how to wield political power.

At the rate the Obama Administration is deporting illegals it will take 14+ years to surpass the 10.2 Million illegals deported during the 8 years of the Bush Administration.

Yeah, I saw that from your post on the DHS, the 397K of deportations in 2011 greatly slowed compared to 2009-2010

Perhaps Reuters was trending off of just the first 2 years of data which showed a rise from 736K to 834K and assumed it would just keep on accelerating up from there. Which I guess makes sense since the Reuters article was dated 9/20/2011, which means that the 2011 DHS data likely wasn't available yet.

So, all-around in this regard, I am incorrect! Not only is Obama fighting desperately to not enforce the existing laws on the books by suing every state that tries to force his hand, but he has also made significant headway in cutting the number of deportations in 2011 by half of what it was the year prior (presuming that it wasn't arbitrarily lower (in part) because of self-deportation that the DHS measure doesn't include in that list.

We will continue to have an illegal immigration problem until the administration enforces the existing laws, Congress passes mandatory E-Verify, and the laws are changed to eliminate "anchor babies".

Encourage your representative to support mandatory E-Verify ( the Legal Workforce Act H.R.2885). If Congress would vote on and pass mandatory E-Verify most illegals would self deport themselves when they were denied jobs and a source of income.

Then too they were picking the lettuce. Since then Gov't has taken the "Guest Worker" program out and won't let Kids from ages13-18 to pick fruits and vegetables any more. I picked fruit and beans that paid for my school clothes all summer long. It didn't kill me to develop a work ethic and have a position at the bottom of the food chain. Kids today wouldn't last a day picking to help their folks out for school clothes and college fund or car Insurance or whatever. If you don't like them coming, then make something happen where people have to work or pick fruit or veggies all summer to help pay for their Own wages and benefits.
