US asks Peru to extradite van der Sloot for trial related to Natalee Holloway killing

The prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway could face extradition to the United States from Peru, where he is currently serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of Stephanie Flores. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

A Peruvian court is considering a U.S. request to extradite convicted killer Joran van der Sloot over charges related to the 2005 death of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, a judiciary spokesman told NBC News on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Dutchman, serving 28 years for murdering business student Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room, is the chief suspect in Holloway's 2005 disappearance in Aruba. He faces U.S. extortion and wire fraud charges.

"Yes, the request has been made ... we are discussing that subject now," said Juan Medina, a spokesman for the Peruvian court system.

Natalee Holloway of Mountain Brook, Ala., vanished in Aruba in 2005 when she was on a graduation trip.

Van der Sloot is charged with demanding $250,000 from Holloway’s mother in exchange for information about the location of her daughter's body. But the information he gave, according to authorities, was false.

During an interview with a journalist, van der Sloot admitted to the extortion attempt, saying he had decided to tell the family what he thought they wanted to hear, because he was angry with comments they had made in media.

Investigators say Holloway wired him $25,000.

Soon after, he was arrested in Peru for the murder of Flores, who died on the five-year anniversary of Holloway’s disappearance.

A U.S. trial is slated for 2015, with van der Sloot facing 25 years in prison if convicted.

Dutch national Joran Van der Sloot is shown during a Jan. 13 hearing at the Lurigancho prison in Lima, Peru.

Holloway was 18 when she vanished during a Caribbean holiday. Her body has not been found and she was declared to be deceased in January this year. Van der Sloot, who lived in Aruba at the time, was one of the last seen with her.

He was twice arrested in the case and spent three months in jail but was never formally charged.

Flores died May 30, 2010, five years to the day after Holloway vanished. Van der Sloot admitted on Jan. 12 this year that he had killed Flores -- a day before Holloway was declared dead.

In an initial confession he later said was coerced, van der Sloot said he killed Flores, 21, who was beaten and strangled, in a burst of rage after she accessed files about Holloway on his computer.

Like many of you, I don't find any logic in extradicting him to US. There must be something more that we don't know. Maybe Natalie's mother is wanting the satisfaction of having him convicted of attempted extortion or the $25k she did send him. Maybe she is hoping that once here, he could be talked into confessing about Natalie or disclosing where the body is, etc. In any event, except that she wants some "closure," I agree he'll suffer more in Peru than in the US legal and penal system. A US attorney might even be able to get him off.

There is no one on the planet that elicits a greater visceral disdainin me than Van der Slut. He is pure evil incarnate. My only fear is he may somehow survive his 25 year sentence, and that is entirely possible as I'm sure his daddy is paying protection money for this sorry a$$ son-of-a-bitc#. William Munny would take his Coach Gun, blow his tiny sack off, then after suficient agonizing, give him the 2nd barrel in the guts.

It does not seem to make much sense to go to the expense of extraditing and trying him. Let the PoS rot in the Peruvian prison for the next 28 years. If he makes it out of that alive, then they can bring him here and try him. The last thing we need right now is to spend millions of dollars on extradition and trial expenses just so the Holloway family can get a bit of personal satisfaction. They are not the ones who are going to have to foot the bill for the circus that will ensue, not to mention the cost of keeping him locked up in a US prison. Besides, the conditions he faces in a Peruvian prison and far more to my liking than seeing him in the relative comfort of a US prison.

Drushalli : I will only agree with you in ONE CONDITION if he comes back to US I would like him t get death penalty...

if he comes here... he has advantage and rights he could use against his crimes like make some dealS if he tell s where the body is to get some plea bargan / break deal Fuc... that... I wont more suffering for killers like him.. others had to suffer for him... it s time to taste your own medicine... I dont want him to have a chance to make deals like what we have here in US

But I think the charges that they want to press is not a death penalty offense unfortunately. I say leave his sorry hide down there. A Peruvian jail has to be worse than an American one. Like one of the other people wrote, an attorney here could possibly get him off.

I agree Marie and I hope that Natalie mother is listening to us... leave his a s s there... he will suffer more... if it s my daugther.. all I have to do is go to Peru and commit a minor crime.. go to Jail and find his a s s and stabb his a s s 100 times but slowly to feel the pain he caused...

BUT SOMEONE WILL DO HIM IN THAT PRISON... IT S JUST MATTER OF TIME!

But if I have a daughter like her I would be very careful where I send her and my baby will not travel nor unless her husband is with her... if she is not married she goes where I go so sorry.. sick people out there...I dont trust any one!

Please tell, who is the dumbasss wanting Van der Sloot to come to the US to face charges, I'm guessing it's probably a lawyer twisting Natelie's parents into thinking that this is how Justice will be served for them, and who wants his/her 10 min. of fame on TV. Leave it to the Lawyers to f'up a good thing.

Let him rot in Peru, rather than spend time here, wasting our tax dollars with appointed lawyers begging for the case. Bringing him here to the USA costs us money, and gives this maggot 3 square meals a day, a soft cot to rest, access to books, exercise equipment and routine outdoor activities like basketball, baseball etc. F'him, let him pay a penalty for his crime, and not give him a reward. Peru will only be too happy to pass the buck to another dumbass country stupid enough to want to add another parasite to the system.

Before you all are so quick to sentence him to hell in Peru, you should check the laws.....I'm not exactly sure what the time frame is, but the fact that he pled guilty and said he was sorry in open court for the Flores murder, under Peruvian law this will allow him to be released from prison in just a few more years....I say bring him back and let him become someone's b*#ch.

I do not beleive there is a statute of limitations on murder, I am not sure of extortion. Let him rot in Peru. If he ever actually makes it out, meet him at the gate and kick his ass all the way to the states for a refresher. American prisons are so much better, he should consider it a rewarding retirement villa for 25 years served in Peru.

      #1.25 - Tue Apr 24, 2012 11:26 PM EDT

Of course he will want to come to the U.S, he could serve his time then hold his transfer back to Peru up in court forever. Oh and Adampositive read the story he is not facing a murder charge, so much for all the posters calling for the death penalty.

        #1.26 - Wed Apr 25, 2012 3:40 AM EDT

Leave him in Peru!! Peruvian prisons are among the worst in the world. Inmates have to survive on their own and fight each other for basic needs - even food! Inmates also have to deal with more dangers to their well-being from other inmates armed with machetes to even the police. They are notorious for beating inmates for no reason at all. People live in squalor in cells designed to hold a third of current levels and sleep on the floor. Also, when taking showers you have to avoid stepping on crap and getting HIV that is in epidemic levels in prisons. Everyday, they make the inmates strip naked and run around outside in the rain or cold. They are treated like dogs!

And now the US wants him? Will he gets his own tv? his own clean toilet? access to communication with his family through skype/facbeook? good food? air condition? a bed with clean sheets? um...room service?

This is all about making some US lawyers rich. This is total BS and injustice to the Hollway family!

This poor excuse for a human being can never be a part of normal society, he is a misogynistic sociopathic animal, who doesn't deserve to breath. They should extradite him to Texas & give him the chair after they get the truth out of him with sodium pentothal. He needs to own up to what he did and be forced to look her family in the eye in the courtroom, & realize what a disgustingly egotistical & selfish coward he is for targeting helpless young ladies. Natalee's loved ones need & deserve to know what happened so they can have a little more closure and move on with their lives.

          No, please.

Why waste money when he can rot in a Peruvian prison. Besides, once he's here, the ACLU will oppose returning him to a Peruvian prison based on some 'cruel and unusual punishment' nonsense because their prisons are 'deplorable' compared with ours.

His sentence in Peru is far longer than any 'attempted extortion' sentence in the US.

          LEAVE HIM THERE.

WTF?!!! I'm not interested in supporting this murderer and paying his legal fees let, alone a frickin plane ticket and extradition costs. Let him spend the 28 years in a Peru prison and then if he's still alive, extradite him and charge him. This is ridiculous, I feel bad for Holloway's family but there is no doubt he killed Natalee. Let her rest in peace knowing her killer is in a substandard prison getting what he deserves. Enough is enough, there is no 'body' to bury, the Holloway's should feel some satisfaction and vindication at his imprisonment. We don't want him in the US, period.

This is a complete waste of time and the taxpayer's money since Van der Sloot will be in prison in Peru for many years. Prosecutors need only broker an agreement that Van der Sloot be transferred to the U.S. after he's completed his Peruvian prison sentence, provided he survives.

"Monkey", you must not understand how our prisons are funded - with taxpayer dollars. As a taxpaying citizen, I have every right to object to the possible use of American tax dollars to house a Dutch criminal who committed a crime in Aruba - thank you very much. If that doesn't bother you, then good for you. Maybe you should pay a Vandersloot prison expense premium on your tax return.

As far as blaming the victim, I certainly don't think this girl deserved what happened to her, but I do think she was probably an easy target for somebody like Vandersloot.

While I totally blame the perpetrator for crimes, lorifromky has a point that Ms. Holloway would probably still be here if she had not been unsupervised in a foreign country and intoxicated. That is not blaming the victim or her family--that is sadly, poor judgment on the part of this young lady that made her more likely to become a victim to a predator. 18 may legally be an adult, but I can't say that I'd trust my own teenager to make the best choices in that situation either. It's so sad because any number of changes could've saved her, but a moot point now to say what should've been done differently then.

Not sure the details surrounding the extradition but serving out his sentence in Peru should come first. Wasn't it reported back then that his sentence could be cut short for good behavior? Perhaps that's why the US is stepping in and requesting this extradition? I don't think the tax payer should have to carry this one either. Tons have been spent on him already.

I agree with DebS, Peru caught him first and convicted him first. After a couple of years in a Pervian prison, an American prison would be a vacation in a first class resort by comparison. The US should make an arrangement with Peru that just before his release from prison there, he be turned over to the US for trial. Until then, let them foot the bill. Sooner or later his money will run out and so will his paid "protection" inside the prison. Then he'll get a chance to fully experience real life in a Pervian prison.

I think we all should take up a collection of about $10 bucks & mail this scumbag a dvd copy of MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. I hope the jail there is just like the one in that movie (BUT IN REAL LIFE, THIS ANIMAL DOESN'T ESCAPE. HE JUST SPENDS HIS 28 YEARS GETTING SOLD UP & DOWN THE PRISON YARD FOR PACKS OF SMOKES......)

WHAT A WASTE OF US DOLLARS. HE IS ALREADY IN JAIL. WHY SPEND THOUSANDS JUST TO SAY: HE'S GUILTY

The parents of Holloway need to move on. They are wasting valuable time and energy on something that should be left alone. Mrs. Holloway lost her husband cause she continued with this story. people, move on. The US government needs to concentrate on important issues not something that has been taken care of. Sure, they will never really know for sure but will a trial make it easier/ No, just money spent that we do not have.

Whose zany idea is this anyway? Wonder if I can file a class action lawsuit on whoever wants to do this? Wasteful blatant misuse of public moneys.

Dick, I hope that you never lose someone to a violent act. Are you so callous that you can't understand what makes a parent fight for the closure they deserve and need? If anyone needs to get a grip it seems to be you...

If brought to the U.S and found guilty for the charges of extortion, would he not got to Federal prison. If that is the case, I bet he is praying for extradition. Who wouldn't want to be in a U.S federal prision compared to prision in Peru. Let him rot over there for 28 years then bring him over here. Maybe by then more evidence will come out about Natalie's murder and he can be charged with that. There are not stature of limitations on murder.

He can't be tried in the US for Natalee's murder. The extortion charge can be brought because the victim was in the US when she was extorted. Natalee wasn't.

why?! An American jail will probably look like a five star hotel in comparison to where he is now... and we'll have to pay for it too! No way... Leave him where he is at until his sentence is done there. We can talk about this in 28 years if he hasn't died yet.

I say leave him there. Peruvian prisons should provide him plenty of opportunities to become "better aquainted" (wink, wink) with his cellmates...and Peruvian guards might be more inclined for such to occur....

WTH? Leave him there! Why should the U.S. be saddled paying to feed and medicate this loser? LEAVE HIM THERE. Here he can choose between crunchy or smooth peanut butter, watch television, use our tax dollars to put in appeal after appeal. Let him eat bread and yams in Peru.

WTF should he brought to the US?! The crime occurred in Aruba so we have no jurisdiction, let him rot in prison in Peru.

I suspect it's some American lawyer he's retained that's requested the extradition. That way the lawyer gets our tax dollars (and publicity) to defend him and Van der Sloot gets a much nicer (by comparison) place to do his time. Oh and always the change to try an escape attempt on the way over.

Bush killed America with his unpaid wars over imaginary threats. Take responsibilty for the mess your last man made and stop blaming everything on Obama.

Let him rot in Peru. There's probably a statute of limitations for extortion, and believe me, he wouldn't get 28 years here. It's highly unlikey he would get paroled in Peru even if he converted into a priest. I agree with most of the post's. Why spend the (our) taxpayers money for 15 minutes of fame for his attorney, a long, drawn out, media extravaganza, and exploiting the victim and her family.

Why are they even considering this? The murder didn't happen on US soil so how can they try him for it here? Don't waste our money just to make Natalee's mother happy. Leave him where he is.

Sentenced to 28 years in Peru for a Peruvian crime and then Peru wants this scum bag on US soil. Please help the American taxpayers understand this logic.

I couldn't agree with you more American-American. Why should the US taxpayers pay for this scumbag to be incarcerated in the US? Let this piece of dung rot away in his Peruvian prison cell, where the "amenities" are far from what they are in the US. Let him do as much suffering as possible! He would probably love coming to an American prison!

Keep him where he is. Hopefully, one of the other inmates will take care of him in a most violent way.

Ill bet VDS's family is behind the push to have this psychopath extradited to the US...He will not receive "Death" because Peru would turn down the request, so he'll be in a First World country's prison rather than a Peruvian hellhole, possibly freezing his butt off in a mountain jail somewhere.

If the American victim's family realized that Peru offers a heck of a lot fewer prison "amenities" than the US and that he may be out on bond in the US, they may not be so enthralled in extracting revenge at this time..

A Peruvian prison is the best "hangout" for a fellow of this caliber..
