NJ state troopers suspended over alleged high-speed escort for luxury sports cars

Two state troopers have been suspended over allegations they provided an “unauthorized escort” to a group of sports cars -- including one driven by football star Brandon Jacobs -- driving at high speeds in New Jersey.

The convoy of cars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches and others, traveled at speeds in excess of 100 mph down the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic City last month, according to The Star-Ledger newspaper. They also traveled on the New Jersey Turnpike and Atlantic City Expressway.

The paper said witnesses had made complaints to police about the caravan -- which one witness dubbed "Death Race 2012" -- saying they saw patrol cars with emergency lights flashing at the front and rear of the sports cars.

The Star-Ledger also obtained amateur video footage of a caravan of luxury cars allegedly being escorted by state police at high speed on the Garden State Parkway in 2010. It is not known which officers were involved in this convoy.

Watch video of a 2010 convoy obtained by The Star-Ledger (video contains offensive language):

A statement released late Monday by the attorney general’s office said Sgt. First Class Nadir Nassry, 47, a trooper for 25 years, and Trooper Joseph Ventrella, 28, who has six years’ service, had been suspended without pay in relation to the incident last month.

An unnamed station commander was also transferred “until any potential involvement on his part has been determined,” the statement said.

“We will not tolerate any conduct by a member of the State Police that puts the public in jeopardy, as this unauthorized caravan had the potential to do,” Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said, according to the statement. “We are thoroughly investigating this incident, and those responsible will face serious discipline."

Lt. Stephen Jones, a spokesman for the state police, said investigators would be looking to see if there were any incidents in addition to the one last month and the one in 2010.

“You better believe they are looking hard to see if there are any more; they are certainly checking that,” he told msnbc.com.

Charles Sciarra, an attorney representing Nassry, said in an email that state police officials had canceled a scheduled interview with his client and "simply suspended him without pay."

"This change of course was taken only after tabloid-like headlines appeared on the cover of Star Ledger over the last two days. The headlines scream 'Death Race 2012' when in fact these charitable organizations routinely ask and receive escorts from the State Police to and from the various charitable functions they attend with their exotic vehicles," Sciarra said. "This practice has been in effect for years."

PFT: 'We are thoroughly investigating this incident'

He added that "allegations of recklessness and speeds in the triple digits will not bear out" regarding the escort in question.

"We hope that the powers that be will take a breath, exhale and engage in a fair investigative process with which we will continue to cooperate.  Either way, we will not permit Sgt. Nassry to be sacrificed to satisfy a public-relations agenda," Sciarra said.

Jacobs unaware
Jacobs’ agent, Justin Schulman, confirmed that his client, who plays for the San Francisco 49ers, went to Atlantic City on the day in question, March 30.

But, he said, "Brandon wasn't aware the escort was authorized or unauthorized."

The Star-Ledger reported that Michael Breen, a founding member of an elite New York City group of sports car enthusiasts called Driving Force Club, wrote on Facebook about a “very fun” run with Jacobs. He appeared in a photo with Jacobs, who was wearing a blue vest with a New Jersey State Police emblem, The Star-Ledger found.

The paper quoted Gov. Chris Christie as saying he “just shook my head” when he heard about the allegations.

"What are you going to do? It’s a completely ridiculous story. Shouldn’t have happened. Dumb thing to do, but let me assure you it’s not the last dumb thing we’ll see happen," Christie told a crowd at a bill-signing event in Newark.

"People are human beings," he added. "They make mistakes. Those people who made this mistake should be held accountable, and I’m sure they will. And I’m glad nobody got hurt."

I'd like to see one of those "Porches" going down the highway ay 100 mph. Especially if it still had the steps attached.

This is what passes for journalism at MessNBC.

The Governor of NJ should be strung-up for a failure to manage his state! I know, it's absurd but if Republicans want to blame Obama for everything that happens in the Secret Service and other federal agencies then why shouldn't we apply the same standards to this Governor?

I gather you are not a public servant. Maybe the NJ Governor will have comments more focused on the the issue presented in the story.

I think it is wonderful. There is nothing wrong with being rich and priviledged. Some people have a great life. A Ferrari is made to go over a 100 miles per hour. Police provide escort service for The Boy Scouts Parade and The Shriners Parade, why not provide Two Units for a Luxury High Speed Auto Parade? This way safety is enhanced. I´m sure if Obama wanted to make an appearance at a Nets Game, oooops I mean Knicks game, the Secret Service would make up a fourth of the spectators.

Let´s not be so uptight. Politicians waste a lot more of our money than was spend by two cops riding down to Atlantic City. Lighten UP. Everybody needs to have more fun.

I don't blame the president or even the governor. But I do, however, blame the officers involved in this and can't BELIEVE the risk they put the public at with this stunt. They should be fired immediately for showing such poor judgement. And if anyone above them was aware of it and gave approval (explicit or implicit) they should be fired as well. This could have resulted in the deaths of innocent citizens all for the enjoyment of a few spoiled idiots. Things like this should NOT be tolerated by those who are sworn to protect and serve. Rather than protect, they put people at RISK.

These cops need to be fired and prosecuted. Instead of protecting people they put a great many people at risk with this stupid stunt. These were not professional drivers and there were a lot of people on that road ho had no idea what was going on. This could easily have resulted in a major accident with a lot of people injured or dead. It is a miracle that no one was hurt in this stunt. The police are not there to provide a high speed escort for a bunch of spoiled rich people to race their cars on a public highway. If they want to race them, let them spend some of their money and take their cars to a track. There are many tracks available that can be leased by private citizens. Or was this really just about them wanting to get to AC as fast as they could in their sports cars!!! If this was an escort for show cars they should have kept to the speed limit. Of course I have never seen a show car that as driven like this on a public highway, they are usually transported on car carriers, so I do not buy the story the police are trying to put out. This as just a lark for a bunch of rich people demonstrating that even in the eyes of the police they are truly above the law.

Which charities? Who foots the bill for these escorts? The great unwashed? I'd bet dollars to cop donuts that this kind of stuff goes on all the time. The elites and their personal police body guards (the brothehood) doing whatever suits them.

I think it is wonderful. There is nothing wrong with being rich and priviledged. Some people have a great life. A Ferrari is made to go over a 100 miles per hour.

And we wonder why the elites are so arrogant and above the law. Why Zimmerman, the son of a judge, walks away from killing an unarmed minor. This is why we are where we are in this country right now. Our scruples are gone and we only worship money and influence and those that have it. Endangering human life isn't even a consideration.

It saddens me to see our once great nation reduced to just another place where the elites are slowly taking everything and the responsibility to society at large is forgotten and even mocked. The "great experiment" is over, we failed miserably.

The new social experiment is happening in Europe and China right before our eyes, but our elites have closed the media curtain so we can't watch. At least, there still may be hope for mankind, but it is becoming more and more obvious that we don't have the values and foresight to make it happen.

Bruce,

So these drivers, in well maintained performance cars, were endangering the public by driving at 50-60% of the potential speed of those automobiles? How about a 19yo, driving a Chevy Sonic or Ford Fiesta at 55 or 70mph, or a twenty year old clunker at the same speed? Or a 35yo mother with three whiny kids in the car? Or the realtor, salesman, or contractor driving down the road with an active cellphone and open laptop beside them? Endangering the public? The only danger I can imagine is all the rubber-necking by the general public trying to get a better view, or even run with the group in a car not meant to go that fast.

Bill: If you set your adoration for super cars aside, you might see that your argument lacks common sense. The police may not be escorting a group of 19 year olds in Chevy Sonics, but that doesn't mean that a 19 year old driver talking on the cell phone isn't one of the drivers in the SPEEDING police escort. Not to mention, many of the cars in it are filled with blind spots, and can also be tricky for drivers who are unfamiliar with the vehicles to handle. You are of the assumption that all of the drivers are seasoned track professionals, when in reality some of the cars could have been borrowed or rentals.

If all of the cars in the police escort had followed traffic laws, there wouldn't be an issue. If the goal was to "spread their wings," then they should have done it on a road that was closed to traffic. I'm all about having fun in these cars, and have done so a few times. But this is still a clear case of police officers putting public safety at risk so they can show off and have fun.

24 comments and no one corrected the original's error (whether satirical or not...most likely not knowing that poster) that the story correctly spelled the type of vehicle. The author of the story did NOT spell it "porches", so how did "messNBC" err in posting this story. I had to laugh at the governor's response...another example of the idiot the voters of NJ elected to office.

He should have been doing more than just shaking his head. He should have been making sure that this outrage never happens again. I don't care WHAT speed a vehicle is designed to run at, it wasn't designed to be driven on the open highway at those speeds. The manufacturers of any souped up vehicle should be held responsible for any violations of speed limits or there should be a federal ban on the mass production and sale of any such vehicle for on-road usage. NO ONE should ever be driving at 100 mph on any road that is NOT CLOSED for a specific amount of time for an authorized/sanctioned race and that driver should permanently have his/her license revoked nationwide. Just another example of how our sports "stars" seem to think they are above the law. If this "caravan" was simply going from point A to point B for a charity event, they certainly did NOT need to be driving at those speeds to get there.

I see now why the first comment after I scanned through the rest of the comments and saw Ian's correction to the story. Since the actual story did not indicate any update times, as most stories do when there is any correction or addition, I did not realize that Ian had an original mis-spelling. And yes, to the comment made below regarding spell-check, that is the problem with such a program. It can't recognize when the wrong word is used, only if a given word is mis-spelled. That is why I guess so many of you posters can never get there/ their/they're or your/you're, etc. correct. These sites need to add a grammar check along with spell check and MAYBE some of the grammatical errors would be corrected automatically. That would go for the msnbc.com software used to write and post these stories. People have become entirely too lazy these days, in the media and in "real life." Very few people ever use proper grammar (English) any more, nor do they take time to proof anything before they post online. Got that Ian and all other msnbc.com "journalists"?

Joe Keg Pack. They are not in Germany they are in the US. It is irrelevant to this discussion that there is no speed limit on the Autobahn in Germany. If they want to drive their cars without speed limits then they should go to Germany get on the Autobahn and do so, as should you. The fact is, here in the US there are speed limits on the highways and driving 30 or 40 mph in excess of those limits places everyone else on the road at risk. They were stupid, the police were stupid and there is no excuse for this to occur. Its not all about these rich alpha male dicks and their sports cars.

I lived in Germany for years. You ever seen an accident on the Autobahn. I have. Fourty or fifty cars piled up and ambulances all over. Do you know what it takes to get a driver's license in Germany. The tests and training involved would keep half of Americans off the road.

Who gives anyone the right to risk the lives of other humans? Oh, I guess money is the thing that gives them the priveledge. I have a friend who races his Porche. He does this with a club on speedways. And to belong to the club, you have to train on driving for hundreds of hours and not have accidents to reach the highest levels of the club. This was just rich jerks risking everyone else's life because they could.

@JKP: I don't drive a Prius. I own a Honda Element as my personal vehicle that does quite well keeping up with other drivers around me, and a Toyota Sienna van as a company vehicle. But living in the US Virgin Islands, we don't have such autobahns. I'd love to see one of these speedsters drive those super-expensive wastes of metal on any of our roads at those speeds (if they could even get up to those speeds.) They would total the vehicle within 10 seconds of getting over 80 mph. You see, we have an automatic speed controller in our roads here...they are called potholes (or craters in some cases) and you would have a hard time dodging them. Plus, here it is "Life in the Left Lane®" and they would definitely be in trouble trying to drive those speeds in the left lane of our two lane roads.

I wonder what the cops would have done if I'd floored my 1980s-era small pickup, gotten it up to 95 mph (its max speed), and started weaving in and out of traffic along with the Porsches and Ferraris (without signaling lane changes, of course)? Would have been pretty hard for them to justify writing me a ticket, wouldn't you think?

The problem wasn't the sports cars, Bill, the problem is with (a) the drivers of the sports cars who were NOT professional drivers and (b) the rest of the traffic on the road traveling at a much reduced rate of speed (none of who knew what the heck was going on). Any time you have a heavily traveled road and then introduce a number of vehicles going 30-40 mph faster than everyone else (and weaving in and out of traffic) you have huge risk for catastrophic accidents. Didn't you read about the gaggle of sports cars recently totaled in Japan (I believe) when they were out for a fast group ride?

If you want to buy a sports car capable of doing 190 mph, then fine, go for it. I support your right to do whatever you want. But if you want to drive it with your buddies on the highway, weaving in and out of traffic, then you are violating the law and are a menace.

There was probably enough money (or debt) in this spoiled group to have rented a road course somewhere for the day where they could be a danger only to themselves and each other.

I haven't read a single comment above about the Presidental, police led, caravans that speed through down town city streets whenever the President wants to get somewhere in a hurry. Why is a police escort at a high rate of speed any different than a police escort (funeral procession) at a very low rate of speed? I've never heard of accidents being created by either. That's exactly why there are police escorts in either case. To prevent accidents.

          #1.36 - Wed Apr 25, 2012 2:24 PM EDT

I happen to live in New Jersey and I see no problem with this what so ever. If you have never driven on the Turnpike, GSP, or other major highway in NJ than you should probably just shut the hell up. Everyday of the week you can get passed by 18wheelers doing 90mph in the right lane, so this is nothing new. Everyone wants to talk about how dangerous this is, but Im willing bet it the same jackasses that drive 10 under the speed limit in the left lane. People love to blame accidents on those speeding, but in my experince its the pussy foot drivers that take 15min to make a right hand turn who end up causing all the accidents and traffic.

We hired these thugs give them a license and a gun and the first thing they want to do is kill or assault someone. Police on daily basis kill or and assault citizens without recourse by those in authority,it is part of their job, all they have to say is "I was afraid for my life" and that allows them to do whatever they want. Maybe the governor will rule this boys will be boys.

He's got a point. Police are rarely ever held accountable for the abuses they commit. Misuse of force, overapplication of force, beating suspects that have already been restrained or have submitted, lying about interrogations, lying during interrogations, mishandling evidence, the list goes on and on.

Not saying that all police are like this. The ones I've encountered have generally been polite and direct, except for one. But, when that one goes off and does something stupid and/or crazy, endangering or ending somebody's life needlessly, they get all the protection from their buddies. Whistleblowers are held in contempt (and often fired illegally), while the perpetrators are kept immune from prosecution. It happens more often than you think.

It's not so much the people driving these cars as it is everyone else around them. All you need is one dumb-ss drifting into that lane while texting, and you'd have a massive pile-up.

I don't get the big deal. They weren't going fast at all. I did not see anywhere in the video, this one is the 2010 version, that the vehicles ever got to 120 MPH. And, even if they did, it wasn't sustained; rather, only momentary and quickly slowed down by slower traffic. The videographer was more of a hazard than any of the sports cars. I don't view it as elitist at all. And, I have to agree, one knucklehead on a cellphone or texting can be much more hazardous than speed.

It makes me like New Jersey to think they're not stuck up, especially the state poopers.

At least they have a sense of humor, and a bit of a sense of adventure (or danger).

I thought the whole thing was simply awesome, but I would have been scared if I was just creeping along in my little roadster. I probably would have screamed, especially with all that noise flying by.

I thought it was; am I privileged? Don't think so, just get the morons out of the left lane so that traffic can flow at its natural speed. 100 MPH is not fast. Travel up the NY State Thruway when its not full with the NYC morons weekending in the Catskills and you will find that the average speed is 80 to 90. Get those city folks in their Zip cars and the whole proceeding comes to a halt. THe poor NYC folks aren't used to going above 35 and cannot handle, or are not used to, speed. Pay attention while driving instead of the make-up, gabbing on the phone, texting, or even looking over at your passenger, and we could travel in a much more efficient manner.

I'd gladly stay in the far right lane when driving "only" the speed limit, but people entering the freeway just don't know how to (or refuse to) merge, so I keep having to slam on my brakes. If I drive in the center lane, I get tail-gated by tractor-trailer trucks. So sometimes the "fast" lane is the safest option--I'd rather be tail-gated by a car than a semi.

                        American Girl,

Actually, they are all capable of at least 185mph, although some may be electronically limited to 155mph. Some, like the Lambo or Porsche 914 are capable of over 200mph.

The Porsche 914 hasn't been produced since the 1970s. Its 4-cylinder engine was the basically the same one used in the Volkswagen mini bus, and the car was not capable of anything close to 200 mph.

to the driver in the video. when a ferrari swerves and cuts you off you do not swerve away, you swerve into the ferrari and immediately develop back pain. just from the video they would award hundreds of thousands as it is obviously intentional when the ferrari cut you off and you have proof of speeding, reckless driving and attempted vehicular assault.

Fired should come to mind for those involved. Good thing some car full of people who weren't breaking the law didn't happen to get hit at those ridiculous speeds and cost lives. That is way over the line. Why should I trust those officers to keep my family safe on those roads, why should the same people condoning and participating in that nonsense get to write anyone at all a traffic ticket after so flagrantly breaking the law repeatedly right there in front of the very people they are sworn to serve and protect?

I'm not surprised that was in NJ since driving is an arcade game there anyway, but why are they still on the payroll? Do the NJ taxpayers really feel safer knowing these guys are on the road and don't have to follow laws? Wonder what they would do to me if I decided to drive my car that fast? Wave me on and give me an escort or arrest me? Geez.

Mr. Johnston, that is awesome. I am curious how so many spelling and grammar errors are left to be published. Even headlines are misspelled or are twisted into odd statements when there would be a simple statement that would make more sense and be more interesting.

                                      Such as:

Uninsured, they become costly 'permanent patients' for hospitals

The answer is that proof readers have to be paid.

Why do some people have this consuming need to correct spelling & typos on everyones comments? I guess it makes them feel superior in some strange way.

In Germany it is pronounced correctly as ' Porsha'.

Because we expect the final print to be accurate and correct. They are journalists who make a living using words!

Well, pixie, I don't go around commenting on all the typos and grammatical errors I see, so you can drop that assumption for me personally. My question to you would be why you don't expect people who are on staff at an international news website and who are supposed to be professional journalists, or whatever the modern equivalent of that title is, to use proper English and check for spelling errors before they submit an article? Why wouldn't you expect them to be able to write headlines that don't sound like something Yoda wrote that often make little sense and are awkwardly worded?

We all make typos and some are even funny and entertaining, I have made my share as well, and I really don't go around commenting on them very often, don't care if posters do because we all just type here for entertainment or whatever reason, but I'm referring to the professionals. There are tools available if a person didn't want to check spelling, so it isn't as if that would be a big deal. It can really be distracting and I am not bashing anyone, but instead asking politely why it seems that many articles and headlines seem to have been so rushed to be published?

Part of the problem, ram, is that our schools don't really teach English/grammar any more, or the students aren't learning what is being taught. Under NCLB, all teachers are teaching is to the tests, which really don't test a student on his/her knowledge of grammar, but on whether they can answer T/F or multiple choice questions correctly. When I listen to how some "teachers" speak, or read what they write, I understand why our students today know nothing. My mother taught English, Latin, and business subjects, so I had spelling and grammar drummed into me my whole educational life. It does grate my nerves when I see how many posters can't write a correct sentence or don't know the difference between there/their/they're or type where when they mean were, or any of the other grammatical errors that are so prevalent.

Yes, the "professional" writers SHOULD be more careful and proof their stories before they post them. However, you have to realize that they are on deadlines to meet their quotas to get paid. In this 24/7 media blitz that we "readers" all seem to demand these days. The first position any publication eliminates these days in their budget cuts are the proof-readers. I used to publish my own monthly tabloid and I know how easy it is when trying to get an issue to press (a one man operation) to not properly proof every sentence in every paragraph in every story before sending a page to press. A writer should never try to proof their own copy. It is too easy to miss an error. When I would see the printed copy, I would slap myself for not catching the few mistakes that I did have in the publications.

As far as funny and entertaining typos, I think the best I have ever seen was an ad in one of our local newspapers back in 1998 when I was selling ads for that newspaper. I went into work one morning and was looking through that day's issue. It seems that NO ONE, including all of the proof-readers, caught a typo in a local grocery ad (not one of my clients). It read "Frozen Children" instead of "Frozen Chicken." The graphic artist who built the ad had a red face all day, and the entire art department heard about the ad for weeks.

I can't imagine that this is the first time this has happened in one state or another. I'm certainly not suggesting that it is a good idea but at least there were cops ahead of and behind this group of Cannon Ball Run wannabees. Not sure about the judgment exercised by the state police.

That's true. You have to let all that horsepower out occasionally or what's the point of buying a car that can go 0-60 in 5 seconds (unless you're compensating). I think the fact that they arranged a police escort was a wonderful idea, an illegal idea, but at least no one was hurt and the drivers got a good show that day. Was this the wrong way to do it, yes. Can you blame them for trying, not really.

We got a peek at the speedometer in the car with the camera - they weren't even close to 100 MPH and yet were keeping up. What I saw were some people punching their throttle to get the twit tailgaters off their bumper. And then we have the two twits publishing this which clearly shows them running a red light while trying to pretend to be part of the escorted group.

What nitwits. Seems they were a large part of "the problem" by being the slowpokes in the fast lane.
