The defense attorney representing George Zimmerman, the Florida man charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, said his client was wearing a bulletproof vest when released on bail Monday morning, due to continued threats to his client in the emotionally charged case, WESH-TV reported Tuesday.
Mark O'Mara also said he was considering seeking a taxpayer-funded bodyguard for Zimmerman if the threats continue, according to the report.
"The way this case has been portrayed, he's guilty until proven innocent, and people are so inflamed against him, he has to be protected, and that's a shame," O'Mara said, speaking to WESH, an NBC-affiliated station in Orlando, Fla.
Zimmerman pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old who was walking to his father’s fiancee's home in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, said he acted in self-defense in the Feb. 26 encounter.
Zimmerman was not charged for more than six weeks, sparking nationwide protests and a debate about race and equity in the justice system. Zimmerman, 28, is white and Hispanic; Martin was black.
An attorney representing the Martins also spoke to WESH to discourage any vigilantism against Zimmerman.
"They don't condone it. They don't want it," said Martin family attorney Natalie Jackson. "If that's what (others) are doing, please stop."
Also on Tuesday, O’Mara blasted a Twitter account pretending to be Zimmerman's for trying to incite anger against his client.
One fake tweet suggested Zimmerman was seeking permission to carry a gun, which was false, O'Mara said. "That's disgusting and should be prosecuted," he told WESH.
Twitter policies do allow parody accounts, but users are told to make it clear that they are not the real person, which O'Mara says was not done in this case.
"It's somebody out there saying, 'Let’s drum up more passion against George and here's how I'll do it'," O’Mara said.
Zimmerman's arraignment is on May 8. He waived his right to be present.

I did check my facts Maria. I have done more on this case then i should. Tracy Martin said that was NOT HIS SON on the first playback of the 911 tape confirmed by the local news station AND the SPD. Yeah AFTER the $$$ train showed up this its "Oh wait that's my son"..... You missed the bond hearing where the "experts" including the joker in the orlando sentienal have been confirmed they they cannot confirm or DENY that it is GZ on the 911 call. It sounds to me that it is GZ based on the audio I have heard of TM. Face it the sample is not valid or good enough quality to judge. Your using that as a "well its not GZ" versus the FACT they cannot tell if it is or not.... Glad your not on trial for your life....

Right, Dan. Trayon walked up behind Zimmerman and punched him in the nose. That could only occur if Zimmerman's nose was on the back of his head.
Jim, so what? The experts ran the audio and used the Zimmerman's 911 recording as a comparison. It was less than a 50% match when it has to be at least a 90% match. Unless there was a third person present then it had to have been Trayvon screaming that night.
Also Zimmerman would have to be completely stupid to get out of his vehicle if Trayvon had already approached him. Zimmerman was looking for trouble that night.
What's funny is that Zimmerman is on record as having told three completely different versions of events that night. I guess you will find one that you like most.

Really. Seems to me like O'meara ripped the prosecution to shreds. Dershowitz has said that Angela could be guilty of fraud and misconduct. Angela and her office may have charges filed against them if she doesn't present something else. If something comes out that PROVES GZ did this in "cold blood" like you all some richly want to believe then fine send him to jail for life. EVERYTHING at this point shows he did nothing more than defend himself against someone who was bigger and stronger and would not stop....

The defense already scored points at the bail hearing and got the prosecution witness to admit there is NO EVIDENCE as to who started the fight. AC needs to PROVE it was not a justified self defense with evidence then she needs to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the charges she has filed. I think even you admit 2nd degree murder is a reach with what we know so far including the bond hearing.

Zimmerman has made a mistake and he is going to pay the ultimate price for his mistake. Jeffery Daumer was a young white man who was convicted of killing and eating a lot of men of color and he met a terrible fate while locked up in prison. Zimmerman is dead either as a civilian or as an inmate. I do feel sorry for him though. It shows you how easy it is to get caught up in mess. My folks used to always tell me how to act around police and also to remember that it is easy to get in trouble but very hard to get out of it.

The witness only wanted to be identified as "John," and didn't not want to be shown on camera.
His statements to police were instrumental, because police backed up Zimmerman's claims, saying those screams on the 911 call are those of Zimmerman.

I have never heard about two women eye witnesses. There is one woman who has sheltered her 13 year old son who is a supposed witness. That is the only woman witness I have heard about. Please supply a link for the other.

These two star witnesses were also so concerned about the "whining" of a "child" they didn't bother to look outside or call 911 until AFTER the shot... Hmm 7 other people were freaking out about the guy screaming his head off for help. Those 2 woman are a joke. They heard and SAW nothing....

I really wish we could stop playing the race card for once! People are horrible to each other and that's it. Has anyone noticed that when the victim is black, it gets labeled a "hate crime" and the whole world has to hear about it ad nauseum and the public threatens anyone who might want the defendant to be considered innocent until proven guilty?
Furthermore, I'm really against the sensationalization of these kind of things because of the way it makes colored people look. Stories like this imply that white people are almost never criminals so the story deserves extra attention. It also implies that black people are rarely victims. We don't see as many over-sensationalized cases like this where the perpetrator is black and we know there is a lot of crime; it leads to the possible conclusion that the reason for the extra attention is there are just too many colored people committing hate crimes to report all of them! All of these assumptions are false, but the media perpetuates them every chance it gets! Martin Luther King Jr. would be ashamed of the sort of disrespect being pinned on colored folks by this kind of reporting.

I hope he doesn;t testify because this gets tossed at pre-trial.... I don't think anyone is going to do anything even if he does testify. Problem is the man spoke for FIVE HOURS to the police and didn't change his story once... Who remembers what they said exactly yesterday let alone for 5 hours. If ONE statement was just slightly different because jesus the guy is in SHOCK he just killed someone and his head is busted up with a broken nose you will all try and eviscerate him. Do you all forget the SPD and the DA already said this guy was not guilty.....
You're wrong, dan. You must have missed the bond hearing last Friday when the PA stated that Zimmerman gave at least three versions of his story. Maybe you need to take your own advice and read up some.
Also the lead investigator wanted Zimmerman arrested on at least manslaughter charges because he didn't believe Zimmerman's account.
As for Zimmerman having his head busted open then why didn't the EMTs not even bandage the back of his head nor did Zimmerman go to the hospital immediately after the incident. According to his brother they waited until the next morning.
Furthermore shortly after Zimmerman shot Trayvon Zimmerman contacted a neighbor and after the neighbor arrived Zimmerman asked the neighbor to call his wife and tell her that he had shot someone. Then Zimmerman had the neighbor take pictures of his head wound.
For someone who had his head slammed against the sidewalk multiple times he sure was thinking clearly.

Being followed does NOT allow you to commit battery. In FL you could not even brandish or claim to have a weapon without being convicted and spending 3 years in jail without parole... under FL law. You could ask why they were following or even call 9-1-1. Instead tm called his girlfriend.
At lease one witness states the man in red (later identified as george) was on the bottom and the other person was on top beating him about the face. Tell us as 19 year old woman what you would do if a 6'3 football player was beating on your head/face. Somehow I don't think you would accept a dinner date.

A gunshot does not HAVE to bleed out or splatter all that much. At least two layers of clothing on Tryavon. Point blank shooting. They are called powder BURNS for a reason. The bullet hole at entry would be the size of a DIME and likely cauterized initially. Trayvon was likely dead in less than a heartbeat. With no BP there would be very little blood leaking out and most would be in the clothing he was wearing. George MIGHT get a little splatter on him but again mostly contained by Trayvons body and clothing.
We've all seen the video of George at the Police Station that night. It didn't show his head injuries yet they still existed. I am fairly certain the jacket he has on in the video doesn't have stripes yet the video shows those. I can't even make out the logo on his left side.. can you in the video?

If a person was sneaking around your property an you called 911 they would say wait for the police an dont follow him, by the time the police got there you could be dead. that was just a suggestion by a 911 operator . I would have followed him too till he left the neighborhood. under florida law if you had approached me because I was following you an punched me in the nose, I could legally kill you. Thats the law, but dont worry, zimmerman will spend the rest of his life in jail bacause the jurors will be scared for their lives if they let him go..... wish I was black, white people could care less if a white person gets killed......

Zimmerman was safe inside his SUV and Trayvon was on foot. You do know that any vehicle (unless it's a Yugo) can be used as a weapon and since Zimmerman's vehicle was in working order he could have left at any time if he felt threatenened.

Jeff Butler - I saw this story on one of those crime shows on Investigation Discovery (cable ID). It was a horrendous story. I, too, wondered why it didn't make national news. Those who speak loudest are heard.
It is hard not to appreciate the bitter irony.So many young men are adrift these days.Particularly young AA males.Who knows what really happened?GZ I guess.Nothing will change until people change.It will take economic recovery for our culture to rebound.
I do not think it was prudent for the court to forbid him from having access to a firearm and then announce it publicly. He's now a sitting duck and a defenseless one at that, even in his new home.
Kevin, considering it was Zimmerman's imprudent use of firearms which has us where we are today I believe that it would have been better for him to have stayed behind bars.
