As demonstrators stood outside the Supreme Court protesting the 2010 Arizona law known as SB 1070, the justices at the high court appeared sympathetic to the provision that allows police in Arizona to check the immigration status of anyone suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
Editor's note: In an earlier version of this story, msnbc.com erroneously described a portion of the bill under review. The section in question requires that police try to determine the immigration status of people whom they arrest or stop if there's reasonable suspicion that person is in the country illegally.
Updated 1:35 p.m. ET: The U.S. Supreme Court indicated Wednesday it appears ready to uphold one of the most controversial parts of Arizona's immigration law: a requirement that police officers check the immigration status of people they think are in the country illegally.
Wading into a highly divisive issue in the middle of a presidential campaign year, conservative and liberal justices who heard oral arguments on Wednesday morning seemed to find no strong objection to that section of the law.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, who casts the deciding vote in many cases, referred to the "social and economic disruption'' that states endure as a result of a flood of illegal immigrants and suggested that states such as Arizona have authority to act.
"You can see it's not selling very well," Justice Sonia Sotomayor, one of the more liberal-leaning judges, told Obama administration Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, referring to his arguments that the law would lead to harassment of citizens.
Arizona appeared to have a tougher time defending two other provisions of the law that are now blocked: making it a state crime to have no federal immigration papers and making it a state crime for an illegal immigrant to look for work. Neither is currently a federal crime.
The court session ran 20 minutes beyond the scheduled hour, with Verrilli arguing the case for the Obama administration and Washington attorney Paul Clement, who served as President George W. Bush’s solicitor general from 2005 to 2008, representing Arizona and its Republican governor, Jan Brewer.
Chief Justice John Roberts dismissed the administration's arguments that the Arizona law conflicted with the federal system, saying Arizona’s measure is "an effort to help you enforce federal law.''
The four conservative justices, Roberts, Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito, all asked tough questions of Verrilli. Fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas did not ask any questions, but based on past votes is expected to support the Arizona law.

Leonida Martinez, left, from Phoenix, Ariz., and others, take part in a demonstration in front of the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, as the court weighs Arizona's immigration law.
Justice Elena Kagan recused herself from the case because she had previously worked on it while serving as the solicitor general for Obama.
Verrilli tried to persuade the justices that they should view the law in its entirety and said it was inconsistent with federal immigration policy. He said the records check would allow the state to "engage effectively in mass incarceration" of undocumented immigrants.
Supreme Court to hear Arizona immigration case: Who wins, loses?
As immigration case goes before high court, what it means for 2012
But Roberts said the state merely wants to notify federal authorities it has someone in custody who may be in the U.S. illegally. "It seems to me that the federal government just doesn't want to know who's here illegally and who's not," Roberts said.
NBC's Steve Handelsman reports.
The Obama administration argues that only the federal government, not states, has the right to set immigration policy. It says Arizona cannot impose immigration laws that conflict with federal laws.
Arizona says it enacted SB 1070 because the federal government has failed to stop an influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico. It says its law doesn’t conflict with federal statute, and in fact does specifically what the federal law is supposed to do.
The legislation was signed into law by Brewer in April 2010 but key parts of the law were put on hold by lower courts pending action by the Supreme Court on the challenge from the Obama administration. Arizona’s law has inspired similar laws in other states.
Brewer was on hand for the final argument of the Supreme Court's term.
Can an illegal immigrant become a lawyer?
Outside the Supreme Court, supporters and opponents of the law held their own court, giving speeches, holding banners and singing songs. At one point, supporters of the law started singing, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” The Wall Street Journal reported. Opponents joined in, and both groups sang the end of the national anthem together, the Journal reported.
The Supreme Court is expected to render a decision before the end of June.
It’s the second high-profile case involving the Obama administration to be argued this year before the Supreme Court. Last month, the court heard oral arguments on a constitutional challenge to Obama’s sweeping health care law.
One of the main architects of the Arizona law, former Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce, has described the unabated flow of illegal aliens into the country as one of the “greatest threats to our nation.”
“We have a national crisis, and yet we continue to ignore it," Pearce, who was removed from office last year in a recall election, testified on Tuesday at a U.S. Senate hearing.

I'd love to see the Supreme Court order the Obama Administration to do their job of protecting our border, and enforcing our immigration laws.
That would be a good outcome.
Of course they'd trot out Axelrod in 30 minutes to rebut the Supreme Court.
Well said. Obama wants them over here so he could register them as democrat and vote for him. then stick them in california so they could get free healthcare, go to college tuition-free, etc. if they were in az, the phones ringing for border patrol will be loud.
This so-called "show your papers law" as MSNBC termed requires NOTHING different than EXISTING FEDERAL LAW, which requires that foreign nationals have proof of their authorization to be in the United States ALL THE TIME!
Let's hope the United States Supreme Court rules on the side of the law and against the Obama Administration (for which I voted in '08), which has sought to subvert federal law. A GOVERNMENT WHICH REFUSES TO ENFORCE ITS OWN LAWS IS INTOLERABLE!
If the Supreme Court is consistent, it will rule in favor of the rule of law. In 2005, in an unanimous decision (9-0), the United States Supreme Court held in Muehler v. Mena, 544 U.S. 93 (2005) that state officers have the authority to ask individuals about their immigration status even ABSENT any reasonable suspicious of unlawful conduct. The Arizona law requires that state officers have more (an actual reasonable suspicion) than that which the Supreme Court has already ruled is legally required. Further, the Arizona law only permits immigration inquiry pursuant to a lawful stop.
In United States v. Vasquez-Alvarez, 176 F.3d 1294 (10th Cir. 1999), the Tenth Circuit held that "state law-enforcement officers have the general authority to investigate and make arrests for violations of federal immigraiton laws."
Further, in 2011, the United States Supreme Court in Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting, 131 S.Ct. 1968 (2011), upheld Arizona's law requring businesses within the state to use E-verify and also authorized the revocation of business licenses for businesses that are found to have violated the law by hiring ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS.
The Democrats don't want illegals to vote per se, but many of their relatives in this country are citizens. That's the vote they're courting.
Or the vote they think they're courting anyway. I've read in several places how Hispanic Americans aren't any happier about illegal immigrants than the rest of us.
If we would not have spent 50 Billion on wars we could have enclosed Arizona & Texas with a 25 foot fence and put an air conditioned dome over the whole deal............the shock and awe of prior stupidity.
Why does Obama want illegals here? The only way democrats hold power is to control peoples lives. Hows that turned out for African-Americans since they started voting democrat in the early 60s, total destruction for them! Now they need another race to enslave, because they can't possibly take care of themselves can they? Latinos should be very afraid of democrats they want there souls and not for the better!
Totally agree Seven2Seven--- We should never have enagaged in foreign conflicts (e.g., the invasion of Iraq) which were totally unnecessary and unjustified. We should have utilized those resources to enforce our own laws, protect our borders, and deport ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS. Then, we would have saved hundreds of billions in additional dollars from the extraordinary burdens imposed by ILLEGALS upon American taxpayer resources!
Yes it would be wonderful and great timing for the SCOTUS to push back on the Administration, to say hey guess what We are the Judicial body that decides if a law is Constitutional.
Axelrod doesn't have any power he is a talking head that's all and so far nothing the man has said makes any sense.
Uphold the current laws, stop trying to circumvent the SCOTUS. Start playing ball and get this country headed in the right direction. Otherwise all of you will be joining the unemployment line.
Should this law get shot down then all the states should stop enforcing Fed. laws and use the money saved to better their states in other ways. The Fed. is effectivly discriminating when they pick and choose who to enforce a law against. When obama gave some states waivers from his obama care he in effect conducted State discrimination. When it comes to laws what's good for one is good for ALL. Stop the discrimination obama!.
We should have used the stimulus monies for border fences. We were attacked by terrorists whose base was in Afghanistan. Bubba clinton, hillary, reid, pelosi and just about everybody else said obama hussein...sorry, saddam hussein was a threat to nat'l security and he had WMD's.
1.7 trillion would have built one helluva fence and created a lot more jobs than so called "green" jobs that fall to the wayside every friggin day.
Seven2Seven,
If we toke a fraction of the 6.2 trillion dollars the current administration has spent it could have been resolved as well.
Of course that 6.2 trillion has been added in less than 4 years which by the way is more than all Presidents combined from Washington to Clinton. And it represents a 62% increase in less than 4 years. Unemployment still high, banks got bailed out, automotive got bailed out, more people on food stamps than there ever has been in history. USA rating downgraded. Dollars printed almost as fast as they can spend them and no budget in 1000 days.
So before you think about raising anyone's taxes, you better get a budget passed and i don't mean month to month. If that's the case then America should be able to vote month to month.
7.62x39mm
I agree, but if they are not doing their sworn duties of upholding the laws then that is a breach of the Constitution and they should all be booted.
I agree AngelicaS, however are we truly a democracy, are truly the land of the free. Look at how much of our rights have been violated in the name of security. The allusion to early Nazi Germany is just too much on the mark. By Arizona's law if one is at all suspected, one has to prove their citizenship. And really, what % of white people are going to be asked to show prove of citizenship if they are stopped for running a stop sign?
John while I agree with you that we must ensure that rights are not violated in exchange for security, we have the MOST GENEROUS IMMIGRATION LAWS IN TH WORLD (permitting 1 MILLION LEGAL immigrants into the U.S. every year). However, the Arizona law only requires that state officials enforce the equivalent of EXISTING federal law--- this does not violate anyone's rights--- it's already the law and has been for decades! If someone believes they have been wrongly targeted, they should sue!
The reality is that enforcemnt of our MOST-GENEROUS-IN-THE-WORLD immigration laws is necessary because we cannot afford the hundreds of billions of dollars imposed upon the American taxpayers by ILLEGALS every year!
Exactly Angelica. All through our days we are asked for Legal ID. Whether it's to cash a check, or open a new account or pay for something. Many retailers ask for photo ID when using a credit card. If you are stopped for a traffic violation, you are asked for your ID.
I don't see the problem with this. The feds are not doing their job in enforcing the laws of Illegals. We need to stop the flow coming in. We need to fine those companies who hire them. There are plenty of welfare recipients and unemployed people to do the jobs the Illegals are doing.
Most people carry ID. I dont see the problem with showing it to vote either, unless your into voter fraud.
The influx of illegals from Mexico occurred during the bush43 administration. The reason, bush41 and bush43 are both on the Board of Directors for Carlisle Corporation, a Saudi Arabian Company. They had invested billions into Hispanic tv and radio and they needed to increase its circulation. So, bush43 allowed millions and millions of illegals Mexicans into the USA so that distribution increased across the country.
Obama said immigration laws are rightfully set be the federal government, too bad they're not rightfully enforced by the federal government.
The problem Janine is not that they have to show ID when they are stopped. The problem is that if they are suspected of being illegal they are stopped. You cannot enact a law that gives law enforcement an open door like that. Who is to say that you are not stopped and detained because you are 'suspected' of being an illegal? Not because you broke the law, but because you are suspected of breaking the law.
There would be no problem if they continued enforcing the laws and holding illegals the same as they have always done. However, you cannot start to treat every person like a criminal until they are proven innocent.
I agree that you stop people from hiring them and they will stop coming. They don't come here to live off of the state, they can't. They come here because companies are hiring them.
First off for all of the ignorant Obama haters, he has put more border agents along the border than Bush and more illegals have been deported under his administration. These are facts, so you can stick to your bs Faux news talking points, but its just noise. @Janine, you can't be serious! Showing ID to cash a check or at a traffic stop is completly different than showing ID for walking down the street with brown skin. All of you who are pointing to exsisting law are missing the point. The problem isn't showing ID, the problem is that if for any reason you don't have your ID, but you do have brown skin you can actually be DETAINED until your status is proven. How many Polish, German, or Chinese immigrants do you think this will affect? There will be more legal US citizens detained under this law than illegal immigrants of European origin. Instead of trying to arrest everyone like most of you suggest and build super fences, what if we invested that money into Mexico. By improving their economy we strenghten a key trading partner and ally and we diminsh the need for illegals to seek work here. The solutions most of you suggest are just stop gap measures and do nothing to solve the underlying causes. By building up the economy of our neighbors we will eliminate the need for illegals to enter the US. This is a long term viable solution but most of you seem to be happy just throwing people in jail. OH and by the way illegals do pay taxes!
The facts won't matter. It will be another snappy 5-4 decision. I wonder how Clarence and Ginny Thomas made a profit on this one?
As far as Illegal Aliens voting thay can't that is poor argument or simply trumpeting extemist untruths.
We need immigration reform badly back in 1986 when the current law was adopted I knew it would be a disaster!
It was a wink and a nod to agra-business to get cheap labor.
for one thing it did not go far enough in dealing with the foriegn countries from where the majority of them come from.
Now we are in it so deep that the simple notion of deporting up to twenty million people will cause such economic disruption it could ruin the country.
What do you guys have against undocumented
democratsaliens?AngelicaS
Yes, case law exists and does support Az's current position - which mirrors the Federal law. I am intimately aware of the immigrations problems Az. has faced. My involvement begins back in 1973 when I was a Deputy Sheriff with the Pima County Sheriffs Dept under Sheriff Cox. Then Tucson was experiencing a serious illegal immigrant "invasion" from Mexico - on any given day we were able to apprehend many illegals and turn them over to immigration authorities who would transport them back to the boarder. We would see the same individuals within a matter of a few weeks to a few days. They were damaging the local job market and local economy and creating more criminal activity - we also saw large amounts of illegal drugs coming with them across the boarder. And I am sure this problem has only gotten worse since then. I no longer live in Tucson, but I have friends who do and they assure me it is worse and the criminal activity has gotten much worse/violent, also. Back then the Federal government did not contribute much in the way of support, either.
The current administration has also refused to act decisively on this issue and has actually refused, in many other instances, to even enforce certain Federal Laws on the book. The President AND his administration swore to uphold the laws of the United States and the Constitution - no matter their personal/political belief. However, I see with this current administration that they have refused to enforce federal laws that, in effect, would be politically dangerous for them and would harm their position with certain blocks of potential voters who would not approve. There is a process in place that could be used to "eliminate" laws that have shown to be offensive/anti-productive/discriminatory etc, to the majority of all American voters/citizens, however, it is not being used - in favor of just ignoring them and picking and choosing which to enforce which seems to be the most expedient and politically pleasing way to this administration.
I don't care if the president is a Democrat. Republican, left, right, black, white or green.....this person is not the right one for the job of POTUS! He has put his own personal career and political party ahead of the will of the people and his oath to us. He has been derelict in his duty and forgotten has the meaning of the words contained in the Oath Of Office he swore to uphold when he became president.
stewgotts...Obama has stepped up deporting illegals convicted of crimes unrelated to immigration law violations. Do you know why? Because he thinks we are fools. The easily fooled actually think he is doing something when what he's doing doesn't put a dent in the problem. On the other hand, groups like La Raza, Mecha and LULAC can't complain because he is targeting criminals who happen to also be illegals.
The few raids we see here and there of employers is all for show, all smoke and mirrors. You will know any elected official is serious about illegal immigration when they start actively cracking down on those who hire illegals.
this is not just a immigration policy, it is a law enforcement policy; a person is arrested, goes to jail, judge sets a bond, cannot ask if person is a illegal entry, if illegal he just gets on bond, and takes off for his home country; the federal law on the books NOW, gives the law enforcement authority's federal, state and local, the duty to determine a inquiry into the status of a person being detained, arrest booking sheets, name, dob, residence, race, resident , citizen, place of birth; how the heck is law enforcement to know who they are dealing with , if you cannot find out if person is illegally in the country.
I understand their plight. But economically, illegals are killing us. Why should we as a country have to fork out hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars to illegals through health care, lost jobs, lost taxes and ect...
When a company hires an illegal this is what happens. The person who once had the job ( US citizen) was making enough money to afford a house, car and so one. But when an illegal takes that persons job for way less money. The citizen has to find work for way less than they were already making. Losing homes to foreclosure. Losing vehicles. Schools losing teachers because of budget, police, and firemen being let go because a community can not afford them because of other unnecessary cost from illegals. And the businesses who hire them. large company or not, should be fined so heavily that they won't even attempt it. And another violation the business owner loses business and fined. To hire an illegal drives the local economy down.
@capitalismkillsbirthrates - Can you tell me how Jesus referred to the Syrophoenician woman in Matthew 15? Didn't he call her a "dog" since she was a foreigner? The term "illegal" hardly seems out of his vocabulary.
If someone is stopped by the police, the police will ask for id, like always.
If no id can be offered then the officer will ask for a name and address to run through their database.
if you are not in the data base, you are either lying to the officer of are not a recognized resident of the country.
NO PROFILING NEEDED TO ENFORCE THE LAW.
The People created the State, and the State created the federal government. The "created" NEVER has more power than the CREATOR...
Unless it has been contracted otherwise, the State CAN enforce "immigration" type laws if they are being invaded by individuals who are not citizens of the Several States of the Union. If Arizona has its arguments in order, they should easily win this nonsensical case...
See the below from an AP article:
"Immigration officials announced that they deported nearly 400,000 undocumented immigrants in fiscal 2011, setting a record for a third consecutive year under the Obama administration.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said this week that the agency removed 396,906 illegal immigrants in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, of which 216,698 were convicted criminals. Most of those had been convicted of driving under the influence."
By comparison, here's how many deportations occurred during Bush's time:
year• 2001: 71,079
• 2002: 71,686
• 2003: 81,626
• 2004: 89,852
• 2005: 87,476
• 2006: 92,263
• 2007: 102,024
• 2008: 114,415
In 1994 there were 11,000 CBP (customs & Border Protection)officers at the border and 564 National Guard troops. Under President Obama the number of CBP agents has grown to 20,000+ and the National Guard troop deployment has increased to 1200, their efforts now augmented by the deployment of several unmanned Predator drones.
They are using Nogales, AZ to test a surveillance system that will continuously monitor 4 square miles or provide scanning monitoring for up to ten square miles. The technology also includes retina scanners that are reportedly accurate up to 50 feet away with the person being scanned running. Its called 'Wide Area Surveillance System'. Plans are also underway to fit the system to those Predator drones and test-fly that over Nogales, AZ.
They are planning to roll out the WASS nationwide in areas that are usually considered hot spots; they would be particularly useful along the border, to monitor communes and cult encampments in hard-to reach places like mountains, search canyons and ravines and snowy mountainsides for victims of avalanches and other disasters. The infrared scanning can see through walls and roofs, giving the government a clear picture of who is inside a house, how many, and what these people are doing inside their houses. They'll be able to see who's cooking meth or growing pot in the basement, for example, who is brewing homemade moonshine in the woods behind the house, see who is breaking into someone's house, see a child molester molesting a child, heck, they'll be able to see you sitting on the toilet!
Also currently being tested are portable DNA scanners. Meant to be utilized at airports, it'll require that the person being tested open their mouth for an inside-the-cheek swab which will then be placed in a portable DNA analyzer and return results. Most of the initial results will be enrollment results but if the DNA submitted happens to be a match or partial match for someone on DHS's database who is, for instance, currently detained at Guantanamo Bay or currently detained as an illegal immigrant, that person can be detained as well because if you have a relative who is illegal that may mean you are too.
Look at all these Mexicans who are marching and demonstrating...........must be nice not to have to go to work and just feed off of the US resources meant to feed the American poor.
The states have every right to enact and enforce immigration laws and this authority is specifically authorized by congress. The following is the appropriate excerpt from the Federal immigration and nationality act:
Federal immigration and nationality act
Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)
State and local law enforcement officials have the general power to investigate and arrest violators of federal immigration statutes without prior INS knowledge or approval, as long as they are authorized to do so by state law. There is no extant federal limitation on this authority. The 1996 immigration control legislation passed by Congress was intended to encourage states and local agencies to participate in the process of enforcing federal immigration laws. Immigration officers and local law enforcement officers may detain an individual for a brief warrantless interrogation where circumstances create a reasonable suspicion that the individual is illegally present in the U.S. Specific facts constituting a reasonable suspicion include evasive, nervous, or erratic behavior; dress or speech indicating foreign citizenship; and presence in an area known to contain a concentration of illegal aliens.
It is painfully obvious to all that Obama will not enforce this countries laws and will go to any length and engage in any chicanery to ensure no one else does either since this assault on Arizona's law is not about profiling or discrimination or any of the other BS issues they bring up. It is all about something no one has mentioned and I won't mention it either, at this time.
At another time in this country's history this would be grounds for immediate impeachment, but not today since the Marxists/Socialists own the government and with few exceptions, the media.

Robert, if you are suspected of being a criminal you will be stopped and investigated. That means showing your identification. If they have nothing to hide, I don't see what the problem is.
It is legal for the border patrol to stop and question ANYONE within 25 miles of the border. They have stopped this blond haired green eyed non hispanic twice in 30 years. I also have to answer the question of are you a US citizen? Where were you born? and Do you have an ID? everytime I go north from where I live. It is a fact of life where I live. I don't see the problem. My DL required proof of US citizenship or legal residency and biometrically encoded thumprints. My state can afford that but Napolitano said today that is too expensive for the federal government. What are they doing with all the money they get from us?
@Janine- What the hell does that mean "suspected of being a criminal?" What does a criminal look like? You are missing the point. You have to only be suspected of being an illegal, not a theif. Meaning anyone of Hispainc origin could be considered suspicious of being a criminal and stopped. What if you don't have your ID? I don't carry my wallet to walk the dog or run down the street to my brother's house. What about if you're suspected of being a doctor you will be stopped and asked for ID? Do you see how ridiculous that sounds?
Finally a win for America and it's taxpayers despite all efforts by Obama and pathetic "yes-men" Democrats who would further vanquish the nation and future generations for a chance at their own short-term personal political power.
After the court gives it's ruling let the impeachment and treason trials begin of all public officials who refuse to support the laws and citizens of the country they were elected to serve.
Pew Research Center has come to the conclusion that the number of people illegally present in the country is declining, in large part because of deportations, so how on Earth can you suggest that the laws are not being enforced?
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/2250/mexican-immigration-immigrants-illegal-border-enforcement-deportations-migration-flows
I agree with Rod Father. Why don't viners understand that we are in this situation because of Bush? Not enough people realize that this is Bush's fault.
Thank you! See this from an AP article:
Christopher Zambrano was biking home on the 79th Street Causeway near North Bay Village when one of several men in black clothes riding in an SUV ordered him to stop. As he got off his bicycle, Zambrano heard the man ask for his papers.
“I said, ‘What do you mean papers?’ He said ‘ID.’ I told him I had nothing on me, not even a driver’s license, because I don’t have a car.” As the man asked if he was legally in the country, more men clad in black converged on the scene in other SUVs near a bus stop on the eastbound lanes of a bridge linking Miami and North Bay Village. Zambrano said he was a citizen, but the men who detained him refused to release him.
They summoned a Miami-Dade police officer who then transported Zambrano to jail because he had an outstanding warrant for driving with an expired license in 2008. Zambrano has a U.S. passport and a birth certificate issued in Atlanta, where he was born of a Guatemalan father and an Irish-Polish mother. However, he was not carrying those documents when he was detained on June 7.
And from another article:
Hans Joachim Keil was arrested in Dutton in September and accused of being an illegal alien. He was an official representative of Samoa, a current Member of Parliament and a prominent businessman with many family links. He had diverted to Missouri on the way home from trade talks in Brussels where he represented Samoa. “They were going to lock me up for five years plus five years. Five years for impersonating a US citizen and five years for using an illegal US passport. On the day of my arrest when I brought to their attention, that I served in the US military … they threw that out the window and said that I’m an illegal alien and I have no right to be in the United States. They knew I was a Samoan diplomat but they had no regard for my diplomatic passport.”
And this (how do you mistake a Brooklyn accent for a foreign one?):
Houston chef Leonard Robert Parrish, 52, ran afoul of a law intended for illegal immigrants. The Brooklyn-born Parrish went down to the Harris County Sheriff's Office in September to clear up a problem over a couple of bounced checks. He wound up in jail on immigration charges. He was strip-searched and spent 12 hours in custody. "The deputy told me I had a foreign accent," Parrish recalled. "I told him I had an East Coast accent. He said, 'It sounds like a foreign accent to me.'" A 2008 Texas law required a person's citizenship status be linked to his driver's license. A sheriff's deputy told Parrish he was detained because when they ran his driver's license information through their computer, it said that his citizenship status was 'unknown.' "I served on a murder jury in Texas and they can't find out I'm a citizen?" asked Parrish.
And this one (he had ID and they never bothered to check it):
Ernesto Galarza, a New Jersey-born U.S. citizen of Puerto Rican descent who was held illegally for three days in the Lehigh County Prison. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ordered his detention, erroneously believing he was an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic. Galarza’s Social Security card and Pennsylvania driver’s license were in his wallet at the time of his arrest and in the prison’s possession during his detention. “I was shocked and upset that they assumed I am an immigrant. No one bothered to check or ask me about it. It’s clear that they only reason they decided I’m Dominican is because I’m Latino,” said Galarza. “I was born in New Jersey, and I’m a proud American. This isn’t how Americans should be treated. It’s like getting slapped in the face."
This is the Federal Government problem with portion of the law. There's not enough protection for those who ARE LEGAL.
it appears from the court watchers, that the major part of the Arizona law will be held constitutional, as a law enforcement matter; many in the legal community agree, Holder our attorney general was way off base, and so was his boss.
So Obama's argument of "The states have no right to have immigration laws because it's a Federal issue, even though I choose not to enforce the Federal laws" didn't impress the SCOTUS?
Finally, some common sense prevails.
It looks like 0 - 2 for Obama's policies so far.
This is actually an opportunity for Romney to court the Hispanic voters with his own commitment to pass a 'fair and compassionate' immigration policy - being purposefully vague, like Obama was in 2008.
Interestingly, it was only under a Republican President (Reagan 1986) that a meaningful immigration reform was passed - the same law that Obama refuses to enforce.
I have no problem with immigration as long as it is legal immigration. As far as having to show identification I was always taught to have an ID on me at all times because the police have the right to ask for it. When I travel outside the country I always have my passport with me because you can be asked for identification. The only reason congress has been turning a blind eye is that corporations don't want the laws followed because then they would be forced to pay legal wages and lose their slave labor.
As I read the article, it all seems like common sense. If someone is stopped or arrested for breaking the law, it doesn't seem unreasonable to check to see if that someone is a citizen of the US or of some other country.
It also makes sense that it should not be illegal to look for work if you are here illegally. I mean, by definition you are ALREADY here illegally, then EVERYTHING you do is in a sense illegal. I would say that it SHOULD be illegal to hire someone who is not legal, but I believe it already REALLY is (even if it is not enforced). Any time I have hired employees, there is a list of documents they need to bring (SS card, I-9 form, green card, etc) to prove that they can be legally hired.
This seems to me like a pretty apolitical approach to the case (I mean, even liberal justices are crossing lines of political correctness to side with the constitution here. Amazing!)
For Washington, immigration is essentially a political issue. Democrats don't want to lose the hispanic vote, so they take a position based on that (plus they know lots of illegals vote, and they don't vote republican!) For Arizona, however, immigration is a very REAL issue. The schools must deal with the flow of children who shouldn't legally be there. THe hospitals must treat and absorb the extra costs. The public safety nets have been strained to the breaking point. Even public safety is threatened as large swaths of border area have been deemed "unsafe" for US citizens. The states have every right to act, IMO, to protect their borders and their citizens. Let's hope the SCOTUS sees this and agrees.
I can't wait to hear Dictator B.O.'s whining when he learns yet again that America is not going to be as easily destroyed as he hoped.
Looks like the Reich-Wing, Fascist Five strike again, further destroying the Constitution. They need to be Disbarred and Impeached ASAP!
Just out of curiosity, do we impeach the other 4 judges too?
And could you tell me how the states enforcing federal law is unconstitutional?
If a local cop caught a kidnapper, should he say "Oops, kidnapping is a federal offense, have a good day sir, and be on your way."
Arizona simply wants to do the job of enforcing federal law. They wouldn't be seeking this permission if Washington was doing their job of securing the border, instead of just talking a good game. But rest assured the Democrats in Congress will have no part of any Supreme Court decision in favor of Arizona, and Senator Chuck Schumer has the bill ready to go and Obama has pledged to sign it into law. Funny really, that the Democrats would push a bill that forbids Arizona from doing the job the Federal government refuses to do. What is the Obama argument, that it is our job, and some day we might decide to do it?
It couldn't have been said better than the man with the sign. "Thank You Arizona!" Now, more states can enact similar legislation due to the fact that our incompetent Federal Government will not uphold current federal immigration laws.
Current laws need to be enforced and strengthened. The biggest thing that needs to be eliminated is the anchor baby rule. No one born in the United States to parents that are not citizens should be given citizenship. Its totally ridiculous as millions of illegals are coming here to download a baby. The U.S. is the only country in the world that allows this. Canada eliminated their anchor baby rule ages ago because they were being invaded by Chinese immigrants doing the same thing. The result of the anchor baby being a citizen?-- When they are 18 years old (possibly 21- not sure which), they can then sponsor their whole extended family to become citizens. Its an invasion, folks. Call your Congressmen and demand that this stops.
This is a bit strange... I read above from the Neutrality Act: "violators of federal immigration statutes"... worth repeating "federal immigration statutes", so federal laws. This doesn't empower states to create their own...
From the U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8
To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;
And the definition of Naturalization:
The process under federal law whereby a foreign-born person may be granted
citizenship. In order to qualify for naturalization, an applicant must meet a
number of statutory requirements, including those related to residency,
literacy, and education, as well as an exhibition of "good moral character" and
a demonstration of an attachment to constitutional principles upon which the
United States is based.
Looking like the Court is going to hand Obama a tough summer. It will be interesting to see what happens to his support when they Approve SB1070 and Shoot down Obama Care in the same month!
What ? It is OK for an Illegal Alien (Immigration) to (1) NOT have proper immigration papers and to (2) be able to look for work even though they are in the United States ILLEGALLY ???? And that is OK with the Feds and these folks have not violated Federal Immigration Laws ?
Yeah, right. The Federal government has nothing in the Federal Immigration Laws which require immigrants within the U.S. to NOT have proper documentation and the Illegal immigrant(s) are allowed to look for work.
The Fed is a frigging joke.
Sheeeesh, Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) are just that.....ILLEGAL. Anyone entering the United States MUST HAVE PROPER Federal immigration documentation, therefore if they cannot produce proper Federal immigration documentation indicating they are in the United States LEGALLY, then they are ILLEGAL and should not be considered for ANY job(s)....plain and simple.
AngelicaS, why bring up money spent "if we hadn't done this, we'd have that" blah, blah. If my grandmother had a pecker, she'd be my grandfather. Talk about NOW problems , not what we did yesterday. That's done, whether we like it or not.
Now we need to impeach Obama for refusing to uphold the Constitution he swore to uphold when he took the oath of office. I know, it won't happen for the same reason the Senate didn't impeach Clinton for perjury after the House of Representatives impeached him.
What we can do is VOTE OBAMA OUT OF OFFICE in November. Encourage everyone you know to get out and vote. Donate to the Romney campaign as well. And, never vote for a third party candidate; it will just help Obama win.
Votes.
My parents didn't tell me I was adopted before they passed away in a car accident,so when ICE came to me 18 years later asking for that paper because they lost it, I had no idea what they were talking about so was declared undocumented and illegal despite having a legal BC, DL, and SS card.
I'm a naturalized citizen now. After spending three years in a deportation camp writing letters to every courthouse in three states trying to find that adoption paper, I now have the privilege of finally having a home country again and being able to (proudly) call myself an American without being slapped or kicked by a deportation camp guard. I am not required to carry my naturalization certificate around with me--it is an 8/12 x 11 sheet of green paper with my photo stapled to it and the Pledge of Allegiance printed on it.
If I were to be stopped and a police officer were to ask that I show it to him, what are my guarantees that the officer isn't going to decide he does not like me, tear up my certificate, and take me in for not having it? I can tell the officers at the station that I had it the officer tore it up, who would believe me? This law shift the burden of proof (innocent until proven guilty) onto the detainee (you're guilty of being an illegal until YOU prove you're innocent.)
If I am required to show it to EVERY law enforcement officer who asks for it, who's to say that cop won't be corrupt, take it, sell it on the black market to have forgeries made of it? What's my guarantee that that uniformed officer isn't just a police imposter and I could then be arrested for not having paers when I report the theft to a real officer?
And my number one reason for not wanting to carry it around with me--IT WILL COST $600 AND TAKE THREE YEARS TO GET ANOTHER ONE! I think most people would not be so casual about showing your drivers' license to every Tom, Dick and Harry who asks for it if it cost you $600 to replace and you could not work for three years until you got another one!!!
And yes, you can show your DL and SS card to the cop when stopped. Where's the guarantee that the officer is going to check?
Currently if a cop stops and asks for documentation, it takes 90 minutes to call the information of the driver in to Central, someone calls USCIS to check, then USCIS checks and calls central and Central calls the officer back. The person stopped has to wait (on the other hand, you now have a good excuse for being late to work.) The officer who stopped the person will have to wait. They can't leave until the call is cleared even if another person drives by doing 120mph. It's going to tie up a lot of resources.
Most cops are good people. I know many from my time selling coffee and doughnuts to them nights at the local convenience store. Some are not--I know several who don't like me (one who called me a chink when I told him we ran out of his favorite flavor of coffee.) If that one who called me a chink stopped me, do you think he MIGHT tear up my naturalization certificate and pull me in because he doesn't like the fact that I'm Asian? (This officer lost his father in the Korean War so I understand his prejudice even though I don't agree with it.)
I just want to comment on something that has been stated earlier by John and others. "Will white people have their "papers" checked?" The answer is Yes, Absolutely. When the police officer asks for your license, guess what, you had to go to the DOR/DMV etc. and prove that you deserved a drivers license. Those are your "papers." So it is not really racist to ask someone for their drivers license. You can in some instances get a drivers license to drive in America without actually being American. So if a person is here legally and driving legally, they are absolutely fine. If they are not here legally. That is when they have to work. It works the same whether they are immigrating from europe or mexico or china. Doesn't matter.
Right-wing nuts just don't like to consider facts, instead they just spew hatred for our president and of course all minorities. The FACT is that Obama has deported illegals at a record level far above the levels of "W" or daddy Bush. Stop the bitter hyperpolitization of immigration policy.
Keep up the hateful rhetoric RepubliCONs and you can ensure that Romney will have NO chance to win. If you aim your vitriol at Hispanics they will not vote for Republicans and we can all enjoy four more years of sane leadership under President Obama. Keep it up!
Except that not all 'illegals' came here illegally. Not all 'illegals' even actually ARE illegal.
According to her birth certificate, Diane Williams was born in Metairie, La., on Aug. 23, 1974. So Williams was shocked on Jan. 18 when, hours after she was released from a Houston jail on prostitution charges, immigration agents showed up at her apartment and arrested her, saying she was an illegal. "I had a copy of my birth certificate, but they said they didn't know if it was real or not," she said. On Feb. 9, she was deported to Honduras, where she spent nearly two months. Eventually, the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa issued Williams a temporary passport, after her mother sent documents proving her identity.
Mark Lyttle, a U.S. citizen of Puerto Rican descent with mental disabilities who was wrongfully deported to Mexico in 2008. Lyttle’s entanglement with immigration authorities began when he was about to be released from a North Carolina jail where he was serving a short sentence for inappropriately touching a worker's backside in a halfway house that serves individuals with mental disorders. Despite having ample evidence that Lyttle was a U.S. citizen – including his social security number, the names of his parents, his sworn statements that he was born in the United States and criminal record checks – officials from the North Carolina Department of Correction referred him to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as an undocumented immigrant whose country of birth was Mexico. Lyttle had never been to Mexico, shared no Mexican heritage, spoke no Spanish and did not claim to be from Mexico.
Here's someone who served in our Armed Forces honorably:
Mr. George Ibarra, 46, was born in Mexico but was raised since infancy in Arizona. In his late 20s he enlisted in the Marines and served three years on active duty, including time in Iraq, before being honorably discharged. On February 23, 2011 Department of Justice adjudicator Richard Phelps ruled in Eloy, Arizona that George Ibarra had by a preponderance of the evidence proven that he is indeed a citizen of the United States. Rather than apologize to Mr. Ibarra for previously wrongfully detaining him, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is holding Mr. Ibarra in solitary confinement at the Eloy Detention Center, in clear violation of the U.S. Constitution and a memorandum requiring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release anyone with "probative evidence" of U.S. citizenship.
Here's someone who ICE continued to hold as an illegal even after he PROVED he was a citizen.
The son of a decorated Vietnam veteran, Hector Veloz is a U.S. citizen, but in 2007 immigration officials mistook him for an illegal immigrant and locked him in an Arizona prison for 13 months. Veloz had to prove his citizenship from behind bars. An aunt helped him track down his father's birth certificate and his own, his parents' marriage certificate, his father's school, military and Social Security records. After nine months, a judge determined that he was a citizen, but immigration authorities appealed the decision. He was detained for five more months before he found legal help and a judge ordered his case dropped.
And here's one that's just plain wrong:
Lack of proper training of immigration inspectors resulted in their mistaken conclusion that Sharon McKnight’s passport was fraudulent. McKnight spent eight days in Jamaica before returning to New York. While there, her luggage, containing all her money, was stolen. Airport workers contributed money so she could reach family members. Once there, her mother flew to Jamaica from New York to take her case to the US consulate in Kingston. With the help of Rep. Michael Forbes (D-NY), consulate officials determined that the passport and birth certificate, which immigration officials had declared fraudulent, were in fact real, and established McKnight’s US citizenship.
This lady's father was born in Indiana and she's still 'illegal':
When Angela Boneva, a 34 year old went to renew her passport in 2003, the State Department told her she was no longer a citizen. Boneva's father was born in Indiana, and the US consulate in Bulgaria gave her U.S. citizenship while she was growing up in Bulgaria in 1981.The State Department said that an employee at the consulate broke a rule that required her father to have lived in the U.S. for 10 years before she was born, the Tribune reported. Her father had only lived in the U.S. for six years before his parents moved to Bulgaria.
Jeff Henderson
You need to read verses 21 - 28 again. Your interpretation is totally wrong.
Amanda - since this was all done by the Feds, what is your point?
THANK YOU AZ!!!!! Kiss my ass libtards......
I notice the picture of the people milling around with signs calling for immigrant justice. What they really mean is amnesty.
Congtaulations, now you can suspect any brown skin person of being a 'criminal' because, being an illegal is a crime. Couple that with the self defense law and presto, you too can be judge, jury AND executioner....dead mexicans tell no tales, right?
Admittedly I'm not milling around with a sign but I do support a fair and consistent immigration policy and DO NOT support amnesty. They are not mutually exclusive concepts.
Not just brown skin, yellow, red, white, and black. If you are here illegally, regardless of origin, GO HOME OR FACE THE CONSEQUENCES!
Those saying that illegals pay taxes. How? They don't have a social security number. Those numbers are consistantly tied to the IRS. What happens is that these "farmers" pay the workers with a check. The workers then go to the farmer's bank to withdraw the money in cash. No taxes were deducted at all. How do I know? I worked at the bank and saw it for myself. It made me sick.
Amanda, in every one of those cases the immigration law was not the problem - the people enforcing the laws were the problem.
There are plenty of horror stories of innocent folks being abused by authorities. I remember particularly well the story of a young bartender being assaulted by a drunk off-duty cop after he was refused more drinks. The whole thing was being swept under the rug until the very graphic security camera footage surfaced.
Still, the cop got much less prison time than any other guy would get for stomping on a girl half his size with the video proof to show the jury.
Illegal immigrants should be deported (without abuse or years in detention).
As far as the US citizens are concerned the current law is VERY clear: USICS (and ICE) has as much authority over US citizens as your local Walmart greeter. They are not even allowed to look funny at you.
Any citizen illegally detained by immigration authorities should be paid full restitution for any and all disruption of their lives.
However the actual practice fits into the trend of the authorities being less and less friendly towards the people living in the USA and those visiting as well. I am sorry for your (clearly illegal) detention and any abuse you suffered (which is also illegal).
While the intent of the AZ law is laudable, in actuality it provides a license for law enforcement to profile people who appear to be of Hispanic descent.
If the law stated that "The police officer is required to verify the citizenship of every individual that was stopped for violation of another law, then that would level the playing field. As the law stands now, it is up to the discretion of the law enforcement officer on the scene whether they are asking the person for proof of citizenship, legal status.
The only problem with the above scenario is this; How does a person who was born in these United States prove their citizenship as a matter of course during a traffic stop, etc?
I find it funny that people believe this is a liberal issue, it is not no President in resent years does anything on immigration. For fear of upsetting the Latino voters. The problem with states doing the enforcement is the abuse of power that historically follows such laws. That all being said if the state has E Verify and enforces and aggressively pursues charges on employers they will no longer have an illegal immigration problem. The fact that employers get away with little to no blame for this issue is ridiculous.
Amanda - "If I am required to show it to EVERY law enforcement officer who asks for it, who's to say that cop won't be corrupt, take it, sell it on the black market to have forgeries made of it? What's my guarantee that that uniformed officer isn't just a police imposter and I could then be arrested for not having paers when I report the theft to a real officer?"
If your that paranoid- then you have copies, and you store those copies in a safe box with people you trust being allowed to have access, friends and or family members have copies, stash a hidden copy in your vehicle etc. Your scenerio of "what if XXXX is corrupt" can be anyone, for any reason - not just an illegal immigrant. But if your that paranoid that everyone is out to get you, you set yourself a contingency plan. I would think if you are that concerned about corrupt officials- you already have such a plan in place.
So true! how the "talking head" Axelrod manages to talk at all, with his entire being up Obama's ass so far, should be declared a top wonder of the un-natural world.
Pax..."As far as the US citizens are concerned the current law is VERY clear: USICS (and ICE) has as much authority over US citizens as your local Walmart greeter."
ICE and Border Patrol Agents have the authority to stop anyone, anywhere and at anytime if they suspect the person is in the country illegally. They've had that authority for years. All of you complaining about Arizona law enforcement stopping someone for being brown, where have you been all these years? Why haven't you been protesting the federal government?
It would be nice to see the Supreme court actually do something to protect this country, especially when the Feds refuse to do anything at all.
- articlesbase.com – search Arizona immigration law --- July 17, 2010 by adelyn asher --- Arizona immigration law --- synopsis of corruption, and - misrepresentation of this law. --- Welcome to the United Socialists States of America - “... Arizona law is a clone of the Federal ICE 287 program - – Plenty of people are finding fault with the Arizona law SB1070 signed by Gov. Jan Brewer,(1) but evidently they haven't considered, or are trying to hide the fact that the Federal law ICE287 is essentially the same law.(2)There needs to be no question why the ACLU, and other entities have been protesting SB1070, because they also protested the federal ICE 287 program.(3)When Senor Wences, Felipe Calderon, from Mexico criticizes Arizona's law, something is blatantly wrong. How can Mexico's President, who enforces harsh immigration law/s, and knows little about Arizona's problems be given creditability?(4)When Eric Holder calls SB1070 possibly unconstitutional, without reading the law, something is blatantly wrong.(5)If people did read the bill they would find racial profiling is specifically addressed, and prohibited. Why is it OK for a fed program to crack down on illegals, but if Arizona wants to enforce the same rules, Arizona is racist? As Governor Brewer has said “I just keep questioning the fact of the continuation of misleading, I believe, the American public on the facts. It's very clear, it's been in federal law for decades, and it's something that we implemented in here to use as another tool to get our borders secured -- and if it was illegal or it was racial profiling here in the state of Arizona, it would then have been illegal and racial profiling decades ago for the United States. ….We are out here on the battlefield getting the impact of all this illegal immigration, and all the crime that comes with it, and no one... We have, I have repeatedly, sent letters to the administration and to the president of the United States with absolutely no response... We have borders for a reason. A nation without borders is like a house without walls. It collapses. We need help, Mr. President.”(6) Are we a nation of children, allowing our nanny state to MISlead us? It's evident the media is not researching all the facts. When will people admit they are getting sc***ed; states are getting forced to protect themselves, because the federal gov. is not doing its job.[7]...”
I find it very interesting that the Democrats are opposed to any type of verification of legal status. Period. I'm still baffled by the resistance to voter identification cards. The Dems don't think you should have to prove that you are who you say you are to vote. The Dems don't think you should have to prove that you are a US citizen to collect government benefits. With all of the problems involving identity theft you would think that all US citizens would be happy to prove their identity just to safeguard their personal rights. Can anybody give me a good reason (not just an emotional one) why being asked to identify yourself is such an affront to their senses?
- - washingtonexaminer-com - On immigration, Obama backs Mexico, not Arizona May 21, 2010 - “When President Obama discussed the new Arizona immigration law with Mexican President Felipe Calderon at the White House Wednesday, he was doing something he has never done with the governor of Arizona ...Far more distressing to some was the fact that Obama took Calderon's side. ... When Calderon spoke before Congress and declared, "I strongly disagree with the recently adopted law in Arizona," most Democrats -- joined by a few Republicans -- gave him a standing ovation. ..”) as he insults a representative that actually cares about America. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican who took on national prominence after signing a controversial immigration measure into law, has won her party's gubernatorial nomination. - The law would not have been controversial if the administration wasn't authoritarian/pushing federal control over state.
Brewer has something not currently getting expressed – values that support common sense – and she won't be threatened by political pressure – very hard to find in the current seek and destroy CAPITALISM/PRIVATE INDUSTRY climate. --- Socialists are against capitalism – this can be verified by visiting many of the current administration's cheerleaders, such as SEIU, HHS, and many federal agencies that state threats such as big businesses need to stop hording money and start hiring – when this neo-democrat administration is constantly mandating, taxing, and fining – which makes anyone concerned about survival horde money – of course this administration would not feel threatened/any fear of being without money because they can just deem a mandate passed, and force citizens to pay for their special interests. Gov. Brewer has proved she will support her convictions, and she shows respect even when she is insulted and treated with disrespect. - she shows that supporting her is not going to lead to more insanity – like what is now getting disguised as progress.

This is one instance where I think a conservative approach is better than a liberal one. Guys, when we let illegals in unchecked, we let the Cartels in unchecked. The Cartels have got their crap together, and unless we want our country going down the toilet like Mexico, we need to make sure the Cartels stay out.
The reason there is a flood of illegal immigrants coming from Mexico to the US is because of how crappy things are in Mexico. They obviously can't clean up their own mess and it is spilling into our country. We need to do more than just kick the illegals out, we need to pull out of the Middle East completely, send our forces into Mexico, and give the country an enema Teddy Roosevelt style. If they can't keep their crap together and it becomes our problem then we should fix it, make them regret the fact that we had to come in and fix it, and let them know that if it gets out of hand again we'll slap some sense into them again.
"ICE and Border Patrol Agents have the authority to stop anyone, anywhere and at anytime if they suspect the person is in the country illegally."
This is not the same as having a law enforcement authority over US citizens, which they do not have. By law their authority ends when you say "I am a US citizen."
Of course as somebody once said: "USA is a country of laws: badly written and randomly enforced." so don't expect much should an ICE officer decide he does not like you.
I am astounded by the ultra-right drivel I have read, and I skipped a few! As the SCOTUS full well knows, there is this document that governs the laws of the U.S.A., and the States that make up the U.S.A. This document is the Constitution - just a reminder to those that may have forgotten. Read it a few times, the whole thing, and you may get a better picture of the whole situation. Now, one more thing, it is NOT the Obama Administration that has not done it's job relative to immigration policy. It is Congress, and a slew of previous administrations, including the ones of the Bushes, as well as the darling of the far right, my dear Ronald Reagan, toss in Carter, and Clinton for good measure. Under Obama, the CBP has increased its activities significantly and with a great deal of success. Yesterday, it was announced that the immigration from Mexico (read Central America) had gone negative. So, lt's consider the facts, rather than opinions and old, old, old wives tales...
Paranoid much?
Divisive Obummer at work again. Instead of holding a conference with the governors of the front line states, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Florida on how to handle the illegal immigration and coming up with a joint policy integrating the work of federal and state forces, Obummer opts for confrontation and divisiveness.
This president ranks below Carter as the worst president in American history.
The posters here are not seeing the forest for the trees. The real issue is whether a state can deviate from federal law if they claim the feds are 'not doing their job'. This is really a 'states right' argument.
If this is legal, then the following are also legal:
1. If AZ doesn't believe that ICE (customs) enforcement at the port of LA is properly checking shipping containers, they can inspect (and tax) every container entering the state of AZ (both rail and truck).
2. If AZ doesn't believe that TSA is doing their job at the airport, AZ can impose their standards (whatever this is) at all AZ ariports.
3. States can apply restrictions for voting (this is already happening). If you don't have a permanent residence - you can't vote. This can be expanded to apply to ownership of land - if you rent - you cannot vote.
4. States can apply the argument that one must be informed in order to vote. If you are not sufficiently informed of the issues being voted - you don't vote. This will be similar to the old poll tax, where blacks were tasked with identifying the 47th word on the 3rd paragraph of the declaration of independence to vote. And if they got that one right, the next question was to cite (exactly) the 3rd paragraph of the Magna Carta (both of these were actually done).
What is really at issue is whether state laws have precedent over federal laws. And the SCOTUS is sounding like they will overturn their own precedent that federal laws trump state laws. If so - this is the 1840's all over again. And the morons need to study history to understand the concern.
wtfies66,
Amen to that! But unfortunately that approach isn't exclusive to this sitting president. Most politicians pander to their parties instead of doing what is fair for all. Whether they can't convince constituents to be reasonable about issue resolution or their constituents blindly take the liberal/conservative side respectively is probably 6 of 1, half dozen of another. It isn't only the legislators that are responsible for making fair decisions - IT IS OUR JOB AS VOTERS TOO!!!!
Automatic amnesty isn't fair to everyone, neither is rounding everyone up and sending them back to Mexico or prison. Immigration laws aren't in existence to exclude people. They are there to protect the citizens from an economic and security standpoint. We need to offer incentives for coming here the legal way and penalties for not. We shouldn't punish the child for the sins of the father, but we shouldn't be letting their legal status slide either - If they want to resent someone, let it be their parents.
And when someone starts to complain about civil rights, ask them if they think it is worse to have their papers checked, or to be kidnapped by coyotes, or work for way less than minimum wage, or forced to run drugs for the cartel.
THIS WHAT THE SCOTUS NEEDS TO REPEAL VIOLATION AGAINST THE "VOTING RIGHT ACT" -TO THE 13,14 &15 AMENDMENTS
Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
However, both versions of the amendment posed serious challenges in being ratified by three-fourths of the states
Unfortunate these states are GOP control States and Presidency against this ACT but allow to further it against the 13,14,15 amendments.
The last extention of Jim Crow Laws Signed by G.W.Bush 0n 2006 on voting right act .Congress nonetheless voted to extend the Act for twenty-five years with its original enforcement provisions left intact.
(This where the GOP Control both House & Senate 2001-2006, and manipulates the populace of minorities of voting right act.)After this period G.W Bush VETOED 12 times, during late 2006-2009, when Democrates control the house & senate, the highest in American's History by any sitting President Veto.During 2001-2006 No Veto on his part till mid-term election when republican in control.Do have any idea how the Patriotic Act been passed? or the How Iraq War passed?.
Preclearance requirement of the States below (the Act's primary enforcement provision)
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Georgia, except for the city of Sandy Springs
Louisiana
Mississippi
South Carolina
Texas
Virginia, except for fourteen counties (Amherst, Augusta, Botetourt, Essex, Frederick, Greene, Middlesex, Page, Pulaski, Roanoke, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Washington and Warren) and four independent cities (Fairfax, Harrisonburg, Salem, and Winchester)
However, versions of the amendment serious challenges in being ratified by electing DEMOCRATES of the above states
This where the GOP -Tea party are" RASCIST" fighting hard to the stages ,even to the extends of being "NO SHAME" by putting themselves bares & rather have the ideology of rascist stupidity in control over them.
IF THE SCOTUS FAILS TO ADDRESS THIS...TIME TO IMPREACH THEM
One of the reasons that the Feds don't enforce the immigration laws is because there is another agenda for letting them all in. Not only for the votes but by allowing illegals to flood into the country allows multiculturalism to destroy the one thing standing in the way of a one world government with NATO presiding over. Obama is on a course to re-create us in the image of all the other (failed) socialist countries around the world, but first you have to dismantle America as we know it and what better way to do that than by letting in millions of illegals who have no allegience to America and what she stands for. Also, what is with this group in the photo above? People of FAITH for Immigrant Justice.....I would think that people of "faith" would want to do the right thing about people here illegally who are stealing from Americans. Both in regards to jobs and in the welfare they receive. People of 'faith' my rearend.
Bulldog Dude (1.10) The fence is an environmental disaster because animals range and do not stop at country borders. On the other hand, illegals dig tunnels under fences and still can cross the border.
Living in Arizona 60 miles from the border, I can tell you for sure, we have a major problem with all the illegals who cross our borders. The mountains of garbage in the desert is disgraceful. We also have many Mexican Nationals who come here legally for the day to do some shopping. They have no problem showing their Visa/Passports. If we lived in any other country, it would be required that we show we can be in their country legally. Another concern is that if these illegals are getting through our borders, what makes a think the "terrorists" can't get through, too.
Lets get the facts right ,Almost all American citizens are immigrant excepts maybe the Native Red Indians.
Political affection has cause alots blaming on these people, the latino, black, chinese etc..
Did any of you realized that we have many foreign-born,even local born with parent not citizens, are currently serving in US MILITARY that are not American citizens. They fought and died for the Country while you jerks sitting in front of computer calling them "Illegal Aliens" .
Its nice of you people calling these warriors," illegal aliens".My Advice, did take a look on the mirror yourself !Americans are NOT homogeneous society, and has No Native Aborigines excepted the immigrant Society.
"Jerks" think they're come from the Moon? Who do you' think you're?
Unless You feels the warrant of having the image of the elephant nose is the must
This is United States of America...god damn!
Oh Boo Hoo for Chairman Obama and his trusty side kick, Holder. I wonder what excuse they'll dream up to prevent the ruling? Issue a restraining order against the SCOTUS? The pomposity of these two a$$wipes is off the scale. Its going to be a tough road for Obumer from here on out, especially when Obumercare is thrown out, he'll have not 1 single accomplishment to hang his hat on. And no the economy is not fixed, not even close.
In regard to those who want to blame Bush for all the illegals, fair enough, along with Clinton, AND you beloved Obumer. Regardless of the circumstances, immigration law should have been enforced as agreed upon during the Reagan years, it wasn't, mainly due to the fact that the economy was growing so fast that we could absorb many of the illegals into our workforce. The main side affect of this was to depress wages. The good news is we don't need to deport those who don't belong here. Simply make it a crime to employ them, and put some teeth in it. They'll have no choice but to go back from where they came. That may sound cruel to some of you but we don't owe them anything. if they want a better life, go through the proper channels to emigrate here legally or do whatever it take to raise the standard of living in your own country.
Well, if you want to get rid of illegals, don't have any work for them. Apparently the Pew's Hispanic research center is claiming that more Mexicans are leaving than are entering, due to a lack of work. Now, I'm not sure I can agree with that claim, most of the illegals coming over of late are carrying drugs and contraband, engaging in child prostitution and human smuggling. The former 'wetbacks' who came over to work used to return to Mexico once they had the money they needed.
The welfare system that allows illegals to have all the benefits that are usually denied to citizens needs to go. Many states are going bancrupt trying to care for all the illegals, their children and the medical costs of paying to birth the anchor babies. The bleeding hearts claiming that the illegals are looking for a better way of life seem to forget this little thing called a visa and greencard. Then, if they really want to have a better life here, there are avenues for applying for citizenship. Many people have gone that route and to grant amnesty to the crooks is a slap in the face of those who did it right.
Note as well that many Hispanics aren't too happy with the illegals. They don't like drugs and gangs in their neighborhoods and those illegals who are actually working tend to take jobs away from the legal citizens. I hope this law is upheld by the SCOTUS. Then again, even if it is, Obama will issue an executive order granting amnesty or else order Holder to look the other way and enforce the 'Dream Act', the one created by executive fiat.
Jack......, I assume you are trying equate showing proof of ID the same as denying someone the right to vote. Yea whatever...., except you are WRONG!
As for your your statement that all but Native Americans are immigrants, right and wrong both. They immigrated here too, they just happened to be here first. Our ancestors came second and took it from them, no different than the battles waged over territory between indigenous tribes before the white man arrived, there were winners and losers. Too bad so sad. I have no qualms about keeping my little slice of America that I bought and paid for with hard work and money. Besides I wouldn't know who to give it back to. Furthermore there is a significant difference between immigrating legally as the vast majority of our ancestors did, as set forth by rules the government put in place to control it, and doing so illegally, and worse yet, the government ignoring its own laws. Which one ('s) will they fail to enforce next?
Lots of comments restored - just not oblique indictments of people you disagree with. First rule:
Wow, touchy subject eh?
Stewgottz;
You're waaayyyy over exaggerating what the law is about. It's clearly written that checking someone for having "brown skin" is an illegal practice. You're just not using your head but that's okay, it's America, you're allowed to be uniformed and not educated on something that you speak of.
What part of the word "illegal" needs to be clarified for those of you who are against this law. This will not cause harassment because technically you must have a valid ID on you anyway, so if someone in this country is burdened by having to show an ID or proof that they are here legally. Well, booo, hooo. If I go to a concert in any city USA and I'm hanging out in the streets and cops come up and suspect that I'm up to no good it is completely within their authority to ask me for ID. Yet you goofballs think it's somehow against human rights for a state to do it that is quite frankly overrun with people who are here ILLEGALLY! I don't care if they are good people or not, there is a process and if they don't go through that process they aren't welcome in.
The only problem with the above scenario is this; How does a person who was born in these United States prove their citizenship as a matter of course during a traffic stop, etc?
In most cases, by showing his or her driver's license. How hard is that? Or is it too much of a hardship to expect someone operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway to obtain and lug around a driver's license?
I realize that there are a few states that don't give a rat's butt about your legal residency. I just moved from one of them, New Mexico (famous for providing driver's licenses not just to illegals, but to illegals living in other states, because of its extraordinarily lax standards). Had I not previously lived in Arizona, I would've had to produce a birth certificate and other assorted documentation to get an AZ DL again. Technically, there could be trouble for people from states like NM driving through Arizona should this law be upheld. That's something that the sanctuary states will need to address should this law be upheld.
AngelicaS,
Scary, for once I am actually agreeing with most of your Posts. Facts are Facts.
We (US) are NOT a Democracy and NEVER were, the US was established as a Constitutional Representative Republic of America. The Founding Fathers stated that "a Democracy is Mob Rule", as to why they established the Rich Elitist Electoral College instead of US Citizens determining the "Highest Offices of the Land, President and Vice President".
Rod_Father,
Try again, President Bush (43) attempted to end the Illegal Alien at the US, a known National Security Threat; but, US Congress chickened out fearing for their lives during the 2006 Nationwide Illegal Demonstrations (No Permits, disruption of Traffic, Trade, Commerce) of Illegal Aliens, so the US Congress failed to pass President Bush's (43) Immigration Crisis Response Act of 2006.
Robert-1384751,
You need to study up on your Rights, Law Enforcement Procedures, etc.. As ANYONE can be Detained as a Suspect, Accused, Presumed; Detained is NOT the same as Imprisoned or Arrested, and Suspect is NOT the same as Guilty.
As AngelicaS posted at #1.2, the Legal Precedent is Set.
And if that is Not good enough for you, on January 21 2009 President Obama signed into US Laws his Patriot Acts (Plural) that extended the President Bush Patriot Act (Singular) and included those provisions of the defeated as Unconstitional US Senate S.1959 and US House of Representatives H.R.1955, No Material Support to Terrorist Organizations (No Humanitarian Assistance, No Funds, No Medical Supplies, No "Expert Advise" especially Legal Advise (see Miranda Rights), etc.), Preemptive Detentions, Monitoring and Censorship of All US Communications, etc.. President Obama shown here on January 22, 2009 during a staged News Media Event signing into US Law(s) his Patriot Acts, 04:38 minutes of 11:55 minutes:
Naomi Wolf: 'Obama can lock any US citizen up without trial'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLSeD19m3UE
stewgotts,
You cannot defend President Obama, especially his April 2009 Policy of "US Military will not be used to secure US Borders", and bypassing US Congress with his Policy of "Only Criminal Undocumented Immigrants will be deported", well guess what if the Illegal Aliens Work for Cash Only and refuse to fill out Employer Paperwork for the Withholding of State and Federal Income Taxes, Deductions for Social Security, Deductions of Disability Insurance, Deductions for Medical Dental Vision Insurance, etc. they are GUILTY of FELONY CRIMINAL TAX EVASION (Immediate Detentions, Freezing of All Assets, Assets subject to Confiscations (Ill Gotten Gains), etc..), as Illegal Aliens have been advised by Illegal Alien Advocacy Groups at the US like (US Taxpayer Funded) La Raza, M.E.Ch.A., etc. to NOT fill out Employer Paperwork as this is used by ICE to apprehend and deport Illegal Aliens ("Effectively" according to President Obama).
Pertaining to Numbers, too bad; yes, President Obama deported more than President Bush; but, by his own statements to Legalize Illegal Aliens, more Illegals Flooded into the US until President Obama tanked the US Economy (did not reinstate the US Laws, Glass Steagall Acts to stop the Causes of the current $60 Trillion to $100 Trillion "Global Economic Crisis" (aka Depression). Kind of like President Obama with a single metal bucket attempting to bail the water out of the RMS Titanic.
Nope that was debunked by the State of California, the only Taxes that Illegal Aliens pay are Sales Taxes which in 2004 amounted to a total of $17 Million, while during that same time of 2004, the State of California spent over $10 Billion on Illegal Aliens, not counting Public Assistance (ever since the defeat of California Proposition 187): $7.7 Billion spent on Education of Illegal Aliens, $1.4 Billion spent on Health Care of Illegal Aliens, $1.4 Billion spent on the Imprisonment of Illegal Aliens for Murder, Rape, Armed Assaults, Illegal Alien Gang Random Rapes and Murders, etc..
And since you lack cognitive research skills, $17 Million does NOT Pay for over $10 Billion spent on Illegal Aliens.
You can say that all you want; however, that has been proven completely FALSE, especially after various States changed their Requirements to Obtain State's Drivers Licenses (All required is a Bill with your name and local address (even if empty lot or foreclosed home) from a Utility Company) allowing Illegal Aliens to obtain their State's Drivers License, with Many States using a State's Drivers License to be able to Vote.
Nope the majority of the agra business at the US has shut down and most of the fruits and vegetables at the US now come from South and Central Americas.
Nope the Benefits versus the Deficits created by Illegal Aliens, the Deficits and Threat To National Security outweigh the Benefits of Illegal Aliens. Even President Eisenhower knew just how much of a Threat to National Security Illegal Aliens and "those Little Frauds" (aka Anchor Babies) were to the Citizens of the US.
Amanda-2017567,
See example of RMS Titanic example above.
And are you attempting to defend President Obama's January 21, 2009 with those actions that President Obama made Legal. Also listed above about Preemptive Detentions of US Citizens.
Also the US Laws currently on the books, the procedures for US Law Enforcement, etc. pertaining to Positive Identification of Anyone at the US apply, negating your uniformed post (1.44 examples) and really uninformed post of stewgotts.
What if you are being treated by someone pretending to be a Doctor and the pretending Doctor is stopped and asked for ID. DO YOU see how ridiculous YOU Sound stewgotts
There was NO Rule of Law, that was just an misinterpretation. During President Eisenhower's Operation Wetback, "those Little Frauds" (aka "Anchor Babies") against the US Citizens, against the US Constitution and Amendments, against the International Reciprocal Citizenship Laws, were deported with their Illegal Alien Parents.
Amanda-2017567,
Regarding your post at #1.62, you can thank the Illegal Aliens and the Mexican Drug Lords that you are attempting to defend, for creating DL, SS, BC, etc. or stealing Identities for the Suspicions of US Law Enforcement.
And regarding your Naturalization Certificate (Proof that you were NOT a Previous US Citizen like you claimed), ever heard of a Notarized Copy, so STOP LYING, unless you want to admit that you are very very uninformed.
As far as "Calling" something in, that is NOT done, it takes second via Computer. Another LIE of Yours.
By the way I copied your post indicating that your Parents adopted an Illegal Alien (YOU) and attempted to hide that fact from both you and US Law Enforcement with Fraudulent BC, DL, and SS obtained by Fraudulent means (see bottom of those Applications and Documents). Ever heard of Self Incrimination.
Try again. President Bush (43) attempted to end the Illegal Alien at the US, a known National Security Threat; but, US Congress chickened out fearing for their lives during the 2006 Nationwide Illegal Demonstrations (No Permits, disruption of Traffic, Trade, Commerce) of Illegal Aliens, so the US Congress failed to pass President Bush's (43) Immigration Crisis Response Act of 2006.
by the way look up the definition of resent versus recent.
interested observer, post#1.88.
Try again. Go look at the Legal Precedents.
Not true. Our immigration system is complicated with high fees, complex laws, and long backlogs. And we DO have an immigration policy. The problem is, it's not very effective. And we ARE guarding our borders; just not in an effective manner. I am all for immigration reform; but the states cannot issue their own immigration policies that contradict federal law. And many parts of the Arizona bill contradict federal law. Some parts of the Arizona law I support, but most of it is discriminatory towards Hispanics. The best way to decrease illegal immigration is to make our own immigration system simple and efficient.
In addition, I am surprised that the people who branded Obamacare as federal overreach are actually supporting overreach on the part of the states. Immigration is given directly to the federal government; ergo, no state can adopt their own immigration policy independent of the federal one. Anyone who goes against Obamacare but supports this bill is a hypocrite.
My proposal for immigration reform is simple; reduce fees, visa restrictions, increase staff, shorten backlogs, simplify immigration laws, and add more agents to defend the border. Invest half of the savings from drawing down troops from Iraq to building more rigorous border security and then institute the Dream Act with the exception that those who would become citizens cannot sponsor their families and friends to become citizens if they are currently in the US illegally. I don't say that we should build a fence, because it seems that we are becoming more insular and it encourages other nations (Israel, North Korea, etc) to build fences to keep out people they don't like. And we don't want that, do we??? We must avoid becoming an insular society and continue to offer open arms to anyone who wishes to come to America for a better life.
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
Epic leading question fail MSNBC. Even when you frame the question in a manner that should achieve the response you want it still blows up in your face - 78.5 to 21.5. Arizona did not create its own law out of whole cloth; Arizona modeled its law after the existing Federal law in full compliance with the Supremacy Claus.
Amanda, do a little more research. Most of the deportations took place in the last quarter of 2011. What they did was accelerate the deportation process. This usually takes a few weeks to several months for some. The reason was to look tough on illegal imigrants, because otherwise, in our faces they are trying to stop the local enforcement from rounding up illegals which because of the Arizona laws and surprisingly California - (Yes, California passed the same kind of law) flooded the system with record numbers of illegals.
The reality is that Obama and company are playing both sides of the field.
Laughing Out Loud. US Military Service is the short cut to obtain US Citizenship. example: The US Military Senior NCO (NCOIC) of my Command Team is now an American of Mexican (Hispanic/Latino) Ancestory, since during the Vietnam War, he came from Mexico and immediately went to the US Military Recruiters, with the self taught valuable skill of learning Vietnamese from Vietnamese Ex Patriots.
hardtostarboard already debunked your so called "facts" at post #1.97.
Just a hint Jack335 when adults are discussing Facts (from Research) slinging your emotive non factual opinions only decreases your credibility.
As far as the argument that Hispanics are a Minority, sorry the other Racists posting in the Newsvine Posts pertaining to Zimmerman versus Martin have stated that the Hispanics at the US are considered as Caucasians and therefore the Majority, and not the Minority African Americans.
You cannot have it both ways. You can argue with those Racists, that even brought that up at the Newsvine Zimmerman and Martin Forums.
alan290,
Additional Legal Precedents that make "Anchor Babies" NOT Automatically US Citizens were those US Laws that were created that Made US Citizens of the Children of LEGAL Immigrants of specifically Chinese, Japanese, Irish, etc.; but, NO US Laws making US Citizens of Children of ILLEGAL Alien Parents.
Freshieee,
You really need to read and comprehend the US Constitution and Amendments, especially about "State's Rights".
You want to discuss President Obama's $1.7 Trillion to $2.1 Trillion not budgeted for Health Care Reform Act (aka ACA) as the reason for the current US Budget Deficit. And the Unlimited Campaign Contributions of $1 Billion to President Obama from the "Insurance Industry", "Medical Device Industry", "Pharmasecuticals Industry" since by his Health Care Reform Act (aka ACA) he gave them $67 Billion to the "Insurance Industry", $23 Billion to the "Medical Device Industry", $20 Billion to the "Pharmasecuticals Industry".
But of course, Freshieee, you read the whole thing and President Obama's "The President's Proposal" before inserting your feet into your mouth.
It was NOT a coincidence that the US Supreme Court Ruled in Favor of Unlimited Corporate Campaign Contributions, just after passage into US Law of President Obama's Health Care Reform Act, as his Buddy "Mr.Corporate America" Legal Briefed the US Supreme Court before the Citizens United Case made it's way thru the US Court System.
Seriously, if President Obama really gave a darn about fixing the US Health Care Situation, he would have by Executive Order restarted the President FDR Universal Health Care For All US Citizens, done by getting the Insurance Corporations OUT of the Medical Profession with an immediate decease in Medical Treatment Costs by 80%, with current price for US Citizens $50 for Unlimited Medical Treatments after getting the Insurance Corporations out of the Medical Profession.
Getting the Insurance Corporations out of the Medical Profession also means that the Insurance Corporations will not be managing Medicare, US Military TriCare, etc., as stated by President Obama on Face the Nation, the Insurance Corporations managing Medicare are padding their Costs to make Profits of $17 Billion to $18 Billion per year; so you cannot use the excuse that President Obama did not know and you cannot say "obstructionist" US Congress as previous President Obama Executive Orders completely bypassed US Congress.
You really need to learn to add and subtract. What money are you going to pay for the upcoming Unemployed from President Obama's Reduction In Forces (RIF) of the US Military of: 80,000 US Military Personnel PLUS 27,000 US Military Personnel Returning from the Wars PLUS 10,000 US Military Personnel returning from the Closed US Military Installations at Germany PLUS 5 More Brigades all being dumped on Unemployment.
How is President Obama's RIFing 1% of US Citizens currently serving the US Military going to help the situation by creating longer Deployments and More Deployments. Statistics show that when you do this the rate of Domestic Violence, Violence Crimes (Murder, etc.), etc. within the US Military increases exponentially.
On top of that is the Unemployment of a Million US Civilians of the US Military Defense Industrial Complex. (President Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Penetta, "A US Military Defense Budget Cut of 10% will result in a Million US Civilians becoming Unemployed", well they did not lie, and these RIFs are to start within the next few months.).
And by the way FACT, I have been involved with the Middle East since the 1980s. The US did NOT save squat from leaving Iraq. And in FACT due to President Obama's March 2009 Improved Relations With Iran Policy (the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran allowed to do anything without US Interventions), the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran pressuredtheir Allies the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Government of Iraq NOT to negotiate with President Obama to allow US Military to remain. So this, lack of US presence and commitment, allowed the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran to negotiate with the Iraqis and Kurdistanis for the Allies of the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran, the Chinese and Russian Federation to get the Iraqis Northern and Southern Iraqis Oil Field Contracts; and all the Iraqis Oil that would have paid back the US for the US Military Liberation of Iraq with DECADES of Iraqis Oil were lost.
Wasted my time, life, lives of my men and women since 1980s as the US Military Teams to US Ally Iraq during the Iran Iraq Wars. 30 years of harsh combat conditions flushed down the toilet by President Obama's March 2009 Improved Relation with Iran Policy.
The same thing happened with the High Tech Mineral Wealth of Afghanistan, as President Obama's March 2009 Improved Relations with Iran Policy allowed the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran to negotiate with the Afghans for the Ally of Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran, the Chinese to get the High Tech Mineral Rights for Afghanistan.
Wasted my time, life, lives of my men and women since 1980s as the US Military Teams to Pakistan during Operation Cyclone (rotated from US Ally Iraq). 30 years of harsh combat conditions flushed down the toilet by President Obama's March 2009 Improved Relation with Iran Policy. And now after it is too f**king late President Obama is reversing his March 2009 Improved Relations with Iran Policy, as the Chinese and Russian Federation will not give back all the (resources) Losses of the US, and the Fundamentalist Islamic Republic of Iran will not give back all their gains, 21st Century Technology (weapons, missiles, nuclear, stealth, etc.) from the Russian Federation and Chinese.
And before you say "We don't need these Resources", ok, then learn to live like a Fourth World Somalis, Afghan, etc..
It has been the Strategic Goal of the Chinese and Russian Federation to get the US and US Allies out of the Resources of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, (recently added South and Central Americas). They become "Super Powers" and the US And US Allies become Fourth World Nations, as "Ran out of Gas", just like how Germany lost WWII after losing the North African Oil, Russian Oil, and other Resources, even with all attempts to survive by creating replacement "Alternative Energy" Failed.
By the way you don't say you don't need something until you have a proven replacement. If you don't believe that, strip naked and throw away your old clothes and go naked to the nearest store to buy clothes and see what happens.
Those are FACTS Freshieee from the Real World Life or Death School of Hard Knocks and not the Idealistic Academic nonsense that only gets people Killed.
Wait a minute. When did I ever say I was defending illegal aliens and mexican drug lords? I had NO sympathy for the Russian drug mule in the deportation camp who slept with the guards for cigarettes and drugs. If you're truly illegal--undocumented AND have broken the law--yes, you should be deported. Even those US soldiers who were deported for having prescriptions for medical marijuana. but for me, who was legal and a citizen...this was a violation of my rights.
At the time that I was brought into the country for the adoption, the law was that if a child was brought to the US for an adoption, the adoptive parents had to file for naturalization because citizenship was NOT automatic with adoption. My adoption was signed by a local judge three months after I arrived in the US, but it was not signed by an Immigration judge until eight months later due to the wait for a hearing. In between the local judge's signature date and the Immigration judge's signature (which is when my federal legal staus as an adopted child began) the law was changed to say that adopted children automatically became US citizens. Hence, if you use the date the Immigration judge signed it, I was a citizen; if you use the date that the local judge signed it, I was not. Which was why finding the adoption paper was so important. Once I found the adoption paper, they decided to issue me a Naturalization Certificate on the basis of the date the paper was signed by an Immigration judge, which was AFTER the law was changed to make citizenship automatic with adoption.
I saw an article a while back where ICE estimated the average traffic stop with an immigration status check will take about 80-90 minutes. I'll do a search for that article and find the link.
No. Dad and Mom paid for my baby passport, brought me here legally, filed all my paperwork legally, and adopted me legally. Dad's military records and both my parents' tax records all show me as their registered dependent. My Immigration file had my baby passport, they had copies of the adoption application and receipts for the $10k Dad and Mom paid for the entire process, the background check done on both my parents, letters of character from friends and employers. FYI--when you're adopting an infant the judge needs to see a legal adoption decree before they will sign off an a legal BC saying that these people are now the child's parents, so the fact that I had one meant I had been legally adopted. Dad and Mom filed the adoption decree along with an original form of my BC; 18 years later when I was detained the BC I gave ICE matched the BC that my parents filed 18 years before with the adotion decree so there was no doubt that the BC was legal. And my SS number was verified by ICE to be legal and no one but myself had ever used it.
Cowards, Thieves. Liars, Hypocrites, LATINOS!
david-475776,
Oh you're just typical nothing , you can picked the spit B.S arguments,
You dont answer the Main Substance, that being raised.
1) Why the SCOTUS DON'T take the SERIOUS of the VIOLATION of US CONSTITUTION OF 13,14,15 amendments by allowing the Jim Crow Act being extented done by GOP and signed by Bush?
Where is the "SCOTUS SIDE "on this matters?
2)Where in Consitution the Authority of SCOTUS can Overwrite a Constitution ?
GIVE ME LOGICAL ANSWER ! Not GRANDMOTHER FAIRY TALES .
Stop pandering on issue Latino is Caucasian and while the black is minority ,I don't want to listen your Chicken and Egg issues.
You want to know about REAl US Economy now ?The World Highest World GDP,just Second below China under President Obama since 1960......If You Want me to teach you on Economy 101?
let me know.
But stop your Limited BS of Deficit and Debt when you doesn't know the basic difference.
So You still Believes WHAT THE PANDERING MEDIA saying now can effects the SCOTUS verdict in JUNE?NO what wonders You still Amatuer !
All the hard corps leftist liberals must be chewing on their tongues over this one! No surprise about Kagan though.
Actually the above should have read "bleeding heart" leftist liberals!
President Barack Obama ON 20 MAY 2010 ordered 1,200 extra National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexico border INCLUDING ARIZONA,President Obama own inisiatives to request another $500 million for tightening the border protection and law enforcement activities under him many illegal are DEPORTED to any standard sitting Republican President or Republican,Governor,Congress has ever done before him.
Now The Governor Jan Brewer and his Tea-Party starts to pre-empting Republican plans to try to force arizona votes on such a deployment on with its New SB1070?, pre-emptive logic, ,but only a "Rascist" provision to stirs the people, as added to clause,as what the fed law are against.
What are these Re-bug trying prove the B.S to ?
But that’s the rub isn’t it,it may be their responsibility, but they’re not fulfilling that responsibility to anyone’s satisfaction, especially the state of Arizona. Consequently, Arizona has felt the need, based in public safety and budget concerns, to take matters into its own hands.?
President Obama already added more than 20,000 Border Patrol agents are deployed now, mostly along the nation's southern border. There are 344 U.S. National Guard troops also working along the border
Pearce, the architect of Arizona’s law testified along with three Democrats including disgraced former U.S. Sen. Dennis DeConcini, a Tucson lobbyist on behalf of for-profit prisons who retired in the wake of the Keating Five Savings and Loan scandal from which the equally tainted John McCain was able to rally. DeConcini oddly "apologized to the Latino community for Arizona’s actions ?.
The preemption doctrine has been established in Supreme Court decisions, and some legal experts have said such a federal argument likely would persuade a judge to declare the law unconstitutional.
But lawyers who helped draft the Arizona legislation have expressed doubt that a preemption argument would prevail.
PRSEIDENT OBAMA, If this What the GOP governor wants to do it and show with their trademark pandering and lies "NO PLAN" ,please Just Spent the Money on the Tax's Payer money on deserving "OTHER STATES".Please Pull all your good EFFORTS out of Arizona.
Let them LEARN being backward state as always,LET THEM PAY THEIR OWN STATE FUND.
Jack335, the “extra” 1,200 National Guard troops is now 300 total. You do realize that most of Arizona’s southern border is Federal land, military base, Indian reservation, or National preserve. Should Arizona pay from their “STATE FUND” to protect those lands? Or should they ask why the promises under the “Secure Fence Act of 2006” not being delivered?
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/18/news/la-pn-national-guard-withdrawing-900-troops-from-the-usmexico-border-20120418
Jack, instead of spewing out ignorance, hate, and lies about the Arizona/Mexico border situation, why don't you try living down here like I and others do? Or are you afraid to see reality for what it is and find out that the real victims of the farce called immigration reform by the current dministration are the U.S. citizens and legal residents living on the border. I now the family of a local rancher murdered in cold blood a while back by an illegal would sure argue with you.
And by the way, Governor Jan Brewer is a she, not a he! I have supported the passage of SB1070 from the very beginning. Oh, and one more thing. I happen to be of Mixed Hispanic descent!
seig hiel!! show me your papers! republican facists! stop talking about wanting less government when at the state level tea partiers have been stripping us of our civil rights since they got in office. vote them all out.
First paragraph of #1.113 above goes for you as well! Grow up and get real!
Ex navydoc,
Actually I'm dead tired with Arizona Rascist Discrimination & GOP War-Mongering State atittudes, to be frank!
Ok here
The Tenth Commandment Why the GOP Control Supreme Court must Struck-Out Arizona S.B. 1070
(1) Supreme Court will strike down the heart of S.B. 1070. Arizona will be relying on De Canas v. Bica (1976) and Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting (2011). Even state regulation designed to protect vital state interests must give way to paramount federal legislation. True, the Court in De Canas v. Bica and Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting would not presume that Congress, in enacting the INA, intended to oust state authority to regulate the employment relationship covered by [the state law] in a manner consistent with pertinent federal laws. Only a demonstration that Complete ouster of state power, including state power to promulgate laws not in conflict with federal laws, was "the clear and manifest purpose of Congress" would justify that conclusion.
(2) Arizona’s S.B. 1070 and Hazleton, Pennsylvania’s no-renting-to-undocumented-immigrants ordinance present different questions. While those jurisdictions might offer an economic basis for the law, evidence is quite clear that the real purpose behind the laws is regulation of immigration, an area that is preempted by federal law. For example, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed and supports S.B. 1070 because the federal government "is not doing its job" of securing the border.
(3) S.B. 1070 is about the regulation of immigration for its allies and Brewer.
(4) When Hazleton, Pennsylvania, enacted its ordinance, its supporters made clear that their intent was the control of Latino immigrants:The consequences which this immigration disaster holds for our children [are] horrendous. Coloreds will take political control of more states, along with both houses of Congress and the presidency. Whites will quickly be stripped of their rights with our wealth confiscated for redistribution to non-whites as is taking place in South Africa. . . . Will America become the United States of Mexico?
(5) Unfortunately for lawmakers in Arizona and Hazleton, they do not have the authority to regulate immigration. Thus, in litigation challenging Arizona’s S.B. 1070 and Hazleton’s ordinance, the federal courts have had little difficulty in finding that the laws are preempted. In the Arizona case, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the injunction of the primary provisions of the law on preemption grounds: the requirement that local law enforcement verify immigration status of all arrestees; the new state law making it a crime for failing to carry immigration papers; another new law that made it a crime to apply for work without proper documentation; and the attempt to authorize local police to enforce the civil provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
(6) The court agreed with the federal government that its enforcement plan would be thwarted by Arizona’s law and was therefore preempted as an improper state attempt to regulate immigration.
(7) Although the Third Circuit’s decision on the Hazleton ordinance has been vacated for reconsideration in light of the Whiting decision, the court initially found that the no renting to undocumented immigrants provision was an attempt to "regulate which immigrants may live [here]."
(8) On December 15, 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice released a report documenting its three year investigation into Arizona’s own Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The report, which was delayed due to a lack of cooperation from MCSO, alleges that Sheriff Arpaio and the MCSO, the largest sheriff's office in Arizona, have systematically engaged in "unconstitutional policing" since 2008. Among the numerous allegations; the Sheriff and his Office regularly engaged in the profiling and racial discrimination of Latinos, denied "critical" services to non-English speaking inmates, failed to complete investigations of hundreds of sex crimes and unlawfully engaged a special anti-corruption team to investigate and intimidate the Sheriff’s critics. In one case, a Latino driver was jailed for "for 13 days for not using his turn signal."
(9) In other words, the ordinance attempted to regulate immigration, and was therefore preempted.
(10) Moreover, actions speak louder than words: Historically, Arizona had the full panoply of Jim Crow race laws and anti-immigrant legislation, and more recently opposed the Martin Luther King Holiday, championed English-Only laws, and recently passed laws aimed at ending Mexican American Studies programs in public schools. There is little in Arizona's legislative record to comfort those who suspect SB1070 is racially motivated. The Court should think of the future in terms of Brown v. Board of Education, not Dred Scott.
For these reasons, and others, the Supreme Court should overturn SB 1070.Anything less, eventually "hopping".
"You shall not covet . . . anything that is your neighbor's . . . You shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's. [316]The tenth commandment forbids coveting the goods of another.
The thy your neighbor's atttitude. For your own prosperer.
Jack - Are you referring to the Mexicans coveting the land and prosperity of Americans?
Jack, thank you for proving my point. You do in fact make a great poster child for hate mongering and disinformation! I pity you for your ignorance.
ED-Navdoc
Did you know? Almost everything you want in life requires cooperation from other people. This is a universal rule. The saying "No man is an island" stands true for everyone. No exceptions.
You will accomplish nothing, or will have a very tough time accomplishing anything, if you're doing it all by yourself. You need other people to attain your dreams and speed up your success; that's a reality. You need Covert Hypnosis.
Thats why the American general should NOT over estimate the "POWER of stupidity" when they cast their votes at the polls.
Unfortunately, you can't just expect them to just give you anything you want and by doing and showing something STUPID being unconsitutional ignorant neighbor as I already mentioned in the TENTH COMANDMENT .
You're the one that sound RACIST by introducing yourself as MEXICAN DECENDANT even to met your expection (or to do whatever you like to do) .I do mentioned about US Consittutionality that conflicting with Arizona SB 1070 any time you please, unless you smart enough. But the facts you ain't reaching that level of understanding...Im profound sorry for you ,yet to see that comming from you.
JC-1439099
Definite NO, I don't refers to Mexican but in general theme,of being a Good Citizen,whoever you're !
Whilst GOP politicians may attribute SB 1070 as their only source to defeat the President and gains their main objective concerns, their responses are also governed by highly personal and through racial profiling subjective factors.
You maybe a bit curious as I do,but allowing the racist fears factor asI mentioned above, being invaded to our minds and let them control using racist superiority proposition, its absurd !
This violating the US Liberty act as in The First Amendment of United States of America Constitution.
I tried, but that is just unintelligible.
Jack, sorry to disappoint you but 52% of the American people already did underestimate the power of stupidity. They elected Barak Obama in the last election!
As for my success, I have no worries there. I am already quite successfull.Based on what you have said so far, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you are a liberalDemocrat with leftist leanings. I really have no problems with that. It's a free country. From the impression I get in what you posted, you believe that all illegals should be treated with kid gloves and given all the rights and benefits of citizenship. This is irregardless of the fact that they have broken the law just by being here. By the way, have you ever taken the time to read SB1070 at all? I have it many times from beginning to end and keep a copy on my desk beside my computer.
I am a retired combat vet of 20 years honorable service of my country that includes Vietnam and the 1st Gulf War. This may very well mean absolutely nothing to you, but I am very proud of my service. My maternal grandparents emigrated legally to this country in the early 1920's. They worked very hard and integrated themselves into society while keeping their culture. Part of that was to make sure that their children worked hard, got educations, and bettered themselves. My grandparents never collected a day of welfare in their lives. My parents taught me the same, and I have passed that on to my children, who are grown and successful with kids of their own. I served and fought for my country and I will be damned if I will see the things I fought for and earned be given away for free to those who have nor earned them! My belief in SB 1070 is based on rights for American citizens and legal residents of all ethnic backgrounds should come first. While I do feel some sympathy for those folks trying to get here to make a better life, a line has to be drawn in the sand and SB1070 is that line. You want to call me a racist, go right ahead. I don't really care. You just make yourself look foolish doing so.
Meanwhile, Back in the "real" world,,,,,,,Illegal immigration has been cut in half under Obama's policies
Yep. All it took was a bad economy where there weren't so many jobs for illegal immigrants. If the president continues to win his War on Prosperity, we can expect even fewer to come and even more to leave the country.
based on numbers supplied by whom?...oh yeah....obamanites
Scooter,
It's true. Illegal entries are way down, and many are self-deporting. They come here for work and when they can't find it, they leave.
No Bo, illegal immigration is down because 1) the economy sucks and 2) this administration uses "creative" counting and statistics.
The recession is the main reason for decreased illegal immigration in recent years. It'll pick up again once the jobs do. This indicates the best way to stop illegals is to take away their jobs and e-verify is the best way to do that. Prosecute the employers, not the Mexicans.
eco
the numbers released yesterday were based on the numbers caught, therefor they are erroneous "feel good" numbers at best.
Your right there, that's because Obama put America's economy in the toilet, consequently there are no jobs for the illegals to get.
Funny you should bring up e-verify...you know hussein obamas SS # was checked under e-verify and he would not be allowed to pick tomatoes...
but you dum masses ushered him into the WH!
Bo--you might want to consider WHO those 'facts and figures' on the drop in the numbers of illegals here CAME from--the PEW Hispanic Center.
When our own Government was estimating 12-20 million illegals were here, they were 'estimating' 6-10 million. And right now, right before the Supremes heard arguments on AZ's law, they have a VESTED interest in attempting to make the problem with illegals seem like it will just go away on its own.
Meanwhile, in MY school district in podunk CENTRAL MO, the number of non-English speaking kids is 50% higher than it was 5 years ago.
Bo then WHY is Obozo's Aunt still living in Boston, on WELFARE, ILLEGALLY? While I believe in the analogy that charity begins at home, I would also think that to make a point that he would NEVER be biased, that his aunt would be shipped back to Kenya.
Bollocks.
Immigration laws enacted by STATES is sending illegals away.
That, and Obama's miserable handling of the economy.
Didnt you guys just come up with the perfect immigration plan and not know it? Elect Obama (cause he will destroy America) and no one will want to come here! Immigration problem solved!
Obama/Biden 2012
Great post air thief! Only reason on earth I can think of for voting for the POS...sorry I meant the POTUS
It's federal enforcement that is largely the reason illegal immigration has gone down, the decline pre-dates the enactment of laws like SB 1070.
And it's not only that the US economy has gotten worse, there are other factors such as a lower birth rate in Mexico and also that the Mexican economy has more job opportunities now.
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/2250/mexican-immigration-immigrants-illegal-border-enforcement-deportations-migration-flows
Here's a related article.
Mexican Immigration to US at a standstill
It would be nice if instead of enacting laws that give officers a means of invading people's privacy or being able to stop anyone on a whim even more than they already can that we would just enforce the laws about hiring illegals for work.
The down economy is proof that we can tackle the illegal immigration issue quite handily by simply going after the incentives that most illegals have for breaking US laws.
GO AFTER THE EMPLOYERS!
Unfortunatly we don't have jobs either. And my state is still spending money to feed educate and provide healthcare to people who shouldn't even be here meanwhile cutting back on services to all including those born here. Not all of you are paying the bills we have been paying for over twenty years. It just started in some of your states and you are squealing like scalded hounds now that you have to pay the bills. We have had to cut services to our children for years. Money is not unlimited and low wages make the problem worse. Low wages because illegals will work for less and they don't all pick tomatos.
For all those trying to claim Obama wants the illegals, what is your excuse for Reagan and Bush #1 failing to act in the 80's when California was dealing with a similar issue and asking for Federal action? Neither side really wants to act as the problem is just too large.
I would add that the NAFTA agreement made the issue worse by destroying the livelihood of many Mexican farmers due to the flooding of cheap federally subsidized corn into Mexican markets.
Having police ask for "papers please" really just makes the police state even worse. It build mistrust of police as they seek out 'hidden' crimes and puts every *citizen* in the position of being guilty of a crime unless they can prove otherwise. You do realize a drivers license is *not* proof of citizenship? How many of you can prove citizen ship if randomly required to do so?
Seriously - Actually, the Arizona law says nothing about granting officers the right to pull people over for no reason. It states that during the course of a normal traffic stop (tail light out, speeding, etc) the officer has an obligation to check immigration status.
I really don't see any issues with this, you don't walk around foreign countries without a passport, you shouldn't expect to get away with the same here. And it applies to ALL illegal immigrants, not just those from Mexico.
Exhibit A for why our borders need to be strictly enforced.
The Mexican Cartel Hitman Who Was Hiding in Sandusky
"Edgar Campos-Barraza had been laying low in Sandusky for 10 years... El Cholo, meanwhile, was wanted in his homeland for aggravated kidnapping and criminal conspiracy. He’s also been linked to the murder of a state cop. He was pulled over in early January and copped to his colorful background during questioning. Since then, he’s been grinding through the extradition process."
http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2012/04/25/the-mexican-cartel-hit-man-who-was-hiding-in-sandusky
The economy may have slowed illegal immigaration but deportation is up and the number of border patrol agents is up around 1500 new officers under the Obama administration.
Sorry Republicans, we don't need huge east Berlin style walls, electrified fences or moats with alligators and such..
Obamas policies of no jobs and the end of the American dream? If fewer illegals are coming here it's ONLY because there is less reason than there used to be.
Good for AZ! What needs to be done is two things-FINE AND IMPRISON employers who hire them. Two-NO birthright citizenship to you unless at least one of your parents are legally here. They are here for two main reasons-JOBS and money/benefits for each kid they pop out. Get tough on the ones who hire, send empty buses to bring illegals up here (yes, some companies are doing that!)
Bo-1925019....."Meanwhile, Back in the "real" world,,,,,,,Illegal immigration has been cut in half under Obama's policies."
Meanwhile, "Back in the "real" world".....
Mr. Obama just had his DHS implement "new procedures" to allow about 1,000,000 Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) obtain PERMANENT RESIDENCY if the Illegal Alien (Immigrant) has at least one family member an American Citizen. And these "new procedures" have not been provided in an article by the Liberal media.
Yeah, Mr. Obama has really "cut" the number of Illegal Aliens (Immigrants) in half (15 million or so illegals in the country and his 1,000,000 Amnesty procedures is NOT half) under "his policies" which circumvented Congressional procedures. Yep, forget about Congressional procedures since Mr. Obama's agenda cannot pass muster at the Congressional level....and that includes BOTH parties.....so he will use his Czars or Liberal Cabinet members to "implement" those "new procedures".
Heck, the Feds cannot control our border immigration laws and they turn a blind eye to those Sanctuary cities.....i.e., San Francisco. Yet, they have enough gaul to take to court States which are trying to uphold Federal Immigration Laws.
Sorry Liberals, our borders ARE NOT SECURE.
The question in the survey is deliberately worded to try and get the answer they want, which is no. States should not be able to pass their own immigration laws, but this is not what AZ has done. They have merely made it a violation of state law to violate federal immigration law. AZ is not trying to institute it's own immigration policy, the new law is focused on using state law to try and enforce the federal immigration law because the federal government and court system is not doing it's job. The wording of the question is a disgraceful attempt to shift the discussion and manipulate the poll results.
Mike, I can prove my citizenship. It's called a birth certificate, and it's right handy in my filing cabinet at home. If I were to be pulled over, oh well, I have nothing to hide. I know many legal immigrants who say they have no problem showing ID. In fact, an Italian immigrant who became a citizen told me recently that she would be proud to whip out her papers to prove she is an American citizen. In the meantime, I live in a sanctuary city over run with illegals. They cut gifted classes at the public schools recently because they needed the funds for teaching non english speaking illegal children. The local hospital recently moved to the exurbs beyond the bus line to cut the influx of illegals in the ER. LaRaza hosted a protest on the town square to protest their lack of rights. Now that's ballsy, what rights?
Looking like the Court is going to hand Obama a tough summer. It will be interesting to see what happens to his support when they Approve SB1070 and Shoot down Obama Care in the same month
To the Kudlow report and the comment " the obama GOVERNMENT ONLY WANT TO CATCH THE PEOPLE BREAKING THE LAW"
HEY the fact that they are here illegally AND ARE BREAKING THE LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bo, and others,
That is BS. Get your facts straight before you say something. Obama is benefiting from the work that GEORGE W BUSH did while he was in office. The downturn in our economy and the drop in the value of the dollar are making and impact as well. Here it is, quoted from Wikipedia. Read it and weep:
"
In July 2005, Congress signed the Emergency Supplemental Spending Act for military operations in Iraq/Afghanistan and other operations. The act also appropriated funding to increase Border Patrol manpower by 500 Agents. In October 2005, President Bush also signed the DHS FY06 [fiscal year 2006] Appropriation bill, funding an additional 1,000 agents.
In November 2005, President George W. Bush made a trip to southern Arizona to discuss more options that would decrease Mexicans crossings at the U.S. and Mexican border. In his proposed fiscal year 2007 budget he has requested an additional 1,500 Border Patrol Agents. By 2012, the Border Patrol will have over 10,000 more agents. They are excepting 100,000 applications. By 2012, the U.S. Border Patrol will be one of, if not the largest law enforcement agency in America. Customs and Border Protection, (the Border Patrol's parent agency which includes the U.S. Border Patrol, air and marine operations, and the port of entry operations) will by far be the largest L.E.A. (which it already is) in America."

Bottom line, Bush DID something and it is making an impact today. Barack Owebama is doing NOTHING but reaping the benefits. Owebama won't even go to the border to check out the situation. Sad. Vote him out in November!
When you have an Administration which seeks to subvert federal law (the very federal law they are duty-bound to enforce), why would anyone seeking to immigrate here believe they have to comply with the law by immigrating legally?
The problem is the REFUSAL TO ENFORCE OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS (THE MOST GENEROUS LAWS IN THE WORLD). This refusal only serves to incentivize exponentially more immigration lawbreaking! The non-enforcement also includes the Administration's refusal to punish the LAWBREAKING BUSINESS PROFITEERS and the Administration's pledge NOT to DEPORT ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS whose only crimes include: (1) crossing the border illegally, (2) failing to register after 30 days, (3) stealing American citizens' identities, (4) fraudulently signing an I-9, (5) committing tax fraud, etc.
No-- really Americans--- the Obama Administration (for which I voted in '08) has pledged not to enforce immigration laws so long as serious, violent criminal actiivity has not occurred. The Administration believes that immigration laws should not be enforced in and of themselves and also believes that the foreoging crimes associated with illegal immigration/illegal employment, should be ignored!!! The Administration has also made a determination that having an anchor baby, should, in fact, shield ILLEGALS from any consequences of their lawbreaking (hence the anchor baby objective is working--- at least for now) DESPICABLE!
AMERICANS (including DEMOCRATS) want leaders who represent their best interests, not the interests of ILLEGAL FOREIGN NATIONALS! WE ARE FED UP!!!
Interestingly, it was only under a Republican President (Reagan 1986) that a meaningful immigration reform was last passed - the same law that Obama refuses to enforce.
The only reason this is an issue is because the Democrats see votes in all those illegal immigrants. Which is the reason they do not want a voter ID required. Come vote Democrat, get on welfare, free healthcare, and a free college education all for putting an check mark in the right box on a ballot.
This is so funny watching all of your heads exploding over your false claims that the President of the United States is worse on immigration and the economy than the republicant's. Reality can easily be found by changing your news channel from Fox News to any other source. Watching Fox News makes you dumber for watching it. Do search, Fox News Dumber, and see the websites discussing the studies proving that statement that watching Fox News makes you dumber because of wrong info and lies! Most of you people are just making up your own stories. Like Romney...people are corporations too! When a corporation bleeds, gets wounded, dies and comes home in a body bag, then call it a people. Where are you birthers on this? I want to see a birth certificate on any corporation!
Yes employers should be using e-verify. When knowingly hiring illegal aliens, employers should be punished.
Obama sucks Obama rules sucks, rules, sucks, rules, sucks, rules. enough already dammit!
All laws do is create criminals. Before we create another law let's enforce what we have. In no way should street/beat cops be making judgements as to whether someone "looks" illegal or not. This will likely result in an incredible amount of Latino Americans being "legally" discriminated against based solely on race! That is a civil rights violation at the most basic level.
What should happen is; if you are arrested for a crime, say speeding, and your check comes back that you are not here legally, then turn that individual over to INS and they should do their freaking job.
What a bunch of nit pickers - nothing in this country is to credit or blame on just one party - did you guys give incomplete answers at school too?
Bottom line here in Arizona - we be too broke to enforce squat - how about fixing our damn roads (#1 complaint of AZ citizens) first. The State cut everything to the bare bones, hence we have so few State and local police now that they can't investigate nuttin', which puts the burden of enforcing this law on the shoulders of the Federal Boarder Patrol. And you wonder why the Feds don't want the stupid law.
The Feds and their courts did the right thing to give AZ their day in court - and made good decisions, the law worked as it should - but it still won't change a thing. If you were a local or State cop, would you waste your time doing all this extra paperwork?
In AZ if you get your Debit card info stolen and even have video of the people using your card info - the AZ police won't even investigate (due to no man-power) unless your bank won't refund your money... and I doubt they would do more than a token effort if it got to that.
Quit your petty bickering and wake up to reality... good gaud you guys love to whine.
Very true! His policies have stunted the economy's recovery so much that number of illegal aliens trying to get in has dropped.
Whoa...seems I've stumbled upon a right-wingdinger mental masturbation party. Good...now we know where all you guys are. Better to keep you in a central location where we can see you. =)
"Interestingly, it was only under a Republican President (Reagan 1986) that a meaningful immigration reform was last passed - the same law that Obama refuses to enforce."
The key portion of that 'Immigration Reform' bill was that employers would be fined for hiring illegal workers, and I think just about everyone can agree that if this part of the law was vigorously enforced, much of the problem with illegal immigration would disappear (No jobs = no money = self-deport).
Our focus should be on strong enforcement of the existing laws against employers - but neither Obama nor his predecessors seem interesting in enforcing that law. Requiring E-Verify proof for each employee from every employer along with each business tax return would largely solve this problem.
A simple, but effective solution to the bulk of this problem.
The MSNBC Poll means nothing. The so-called Governor of Arizona probably got her thugs to make announcements to come on this site and throw the vote.
Arizona, the state that had to vote twice to outlaw equal marriage, the laughing stock of the world. The Reason the USA is in this mess is that the States are trying to be TOO independent. There is no situation like this anywhere else in the world, not even in Australia, which is a Teabag Nation. There are many things the US Government does that the States should never get their hands on.
When one becomes a Citizen of the United States, one does not become a citizen of a state, but the Nation, thus this falls in the job description of the Federal Government.
What the Governor of Arizona has done is pure Treason. If we had a good President, instead of one with-out a back bone, The Governor of Arizona would be serving hard time in a Federal Super Max Prison for the rest of her miserable life.
Its time to repeal the 9th and 10th Amendments to the Constitution.
And thats my Opinion.
2Sense "All laws do is create criminals"
Now there's an original thought. We could eliminate all crime by making everything legal (Murder, robbery, rape, etc.).
Typical Republican short term memory loss...the economy tanked under Bush. Nice
lietry, and thank you for playing.Magnum Serpentine "The MSNBC Poll means nothing."
Normally, that true because 80% of MSNBC followers are left of center, but when those same people vote overwhelmingly against Obama's policies, it's very revealing.
Neither did this woman:
Or this one:
According to her birth certificate, Diane Williams was born in Metairie, La., on Aug. 23, 1974. So Williams was shocked on Jan. 18 when, hours after she was released from a Houston jail on prostitution charges, immigration agents showed up at her apartment and arrested her, saying she was an illegal. "I had a copy of my birth certificate, but they said they didn't know if it was real or not," she said. On Feb. 9, she was deported to Honduras, where she spent nearly two months, Eventually, the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa issued Williams a temporary passport, after her mother sent documents proving her identity.
I'm a naturalized citizen. According to USCIS, I am not required to carry my naturalization certificate around with me--it is an 8/12 x 11 sheet of green paper with my photo stapled to it and the Pledge of Allegiance printed on it.
If I were to be stopped and a police officer were to ask that I show it to him, what are my guarantees that the officer isn't going to decide he does not like me, tear up my certificate, and take me in for not having it? I can tell the officers at the station that I had it but the officer tore it up, who would believe me? This law shifts the burden of proof (innocent until proven guilty) onto the detainee (you're guilty of being an illegal until YOU prove you're innocent.)
If I am required to show it to EVERY law enforcement officer who asks for it, who's to say that cop won't be corrupt, take it, sell it on the black market to have forgeries made of it? What's my guarantee that that uniformed officer isn't a police imposter and I could then be arrested for not having papers when I report the theft to a real officer?
And my number one reason for not wanting to carry it around with me--IT WILL COST $600 AND TAKE THREE YEARS TO GET ANOTHER ONE! I think most people would not be so casual about showing their drivers' license to every Tom, Dick and Harry who asks for it if it cost them $600 to replace and they could not work for three years until they got another one!!!
And yes, you can show your DL and SS card to the cop when stopped. Where's the guarantee that the officer is going to check? Most cops are good people. I know many from my time selling coffee and doughnuts to them nights at the local convenience store. Some are not--I know several who don't like me (one who called me a 'f**g chink' when I told him we ran out of his favorite flavor of coffee.) If that one stopped me, do you think he MIGHT tear up my naturalization certificate and pull me in because he doesn't like the fact that I'm Asian? (This officer lost his father in the Korean War so I understand his prejudice even though I don't agree with it.)
Currently if a cop stops and asks for documentation, USCIS estimates it takes 90 minutes to call the information of the driver in to Central, someone calls USCIS to check, then USCIS checks and calls Central and Central calls the officer back. The person stopped has to wait (on the other hand, you now have a good excuse for being late to work.) The officer who stopped the person will have to wait. It's going to tie up a lot of resources since they can't leave until the call is cleared even if another person drives by doing 120mph.
And if you don't legally have parents, a birthplace, or a birthdate?
I was abandoned as an infant with no paperwork --the term for people like me is stateless/undocumented. What would you have done with me?
Unfortunately, if Obama is reelected, he still wins on this issue.
If an illegal immigrant get arrested in Arizona, the State will verify that they are indeed here illegally, and turn them over to the Federal INS, who, under Obama's current policy, will merely let them go.
The Obama Administration has already announced a policy wherein they will not deport illegal immigrants in their custody unless they have a felony conviction on their record.
Cynicism at its best.
Its too late now; We should call the southern states Mexiamerica! It would take brilliance to clean it up now.
Amanda-2017567 "And if you don't legally have parents, a birthplace, or a birthdate? I was abandoned as an infant with no paperwork --the term for people like me is stateless/undocumented."
Did you go to school in the US? Do you work? Do you have a driver's license?
I suspect you already worked out a solution to your problem that doesn't involve scrapping our immigration laws.
Funny that none of the lefty bloggers that make all the noise are here screaming about this......even the liberal judges didnt see the positives of this.
Personally this sounds like something Nazi Germany would do. "Let me zee your papers?! Schnell schnell!! Or we take you to prison!!" Only this time it's hidden under the guise of immigration law instead of ethnic extermination.
I'm a third or 4th generation American with Irish-Italian ancestry. Although I have more Italian in me which darkens my skin, hair and eyes. I passed for an Arab while living overseas to many native's of Arab countries, it's also been commented that I look Hispanic also. So now if I go to Arizona or Alabama I will have to worry about police harassing me for my immigration papers just because I "look" like I could be illegal??!! You are telling me that this law is constitutional but it's unconstitutional for the government to make you buy health insurance just like they make you buy car insurance??? Heck why not just give the police the authority to just barge into everyone's homes without probable cause or a warrant, just to make sure they aren't housing any illegals. Who knows maybe someone will start an illegal immigrant underground railroad!!!
I know people are going to say "If you're legal you have nothing to worry about." Well what if you are detained on your way to work? Cops detain you thinking you're illegal and you could lose your job for not making it to work on time. What if they detain you on your way to pick up your children from school and don't believe you're legal? Your kids might be left sitting on the curb for who knows how long? How about if you're detained on the way back from the grocery store? By the time you get cleared all your perishables have spoiled, wilted, or melted.
Do I think something has to be done about illegal immigration? YES! However the changes and law enforcement need to be put to work where it will make a difference. The two main things that would help curb illegal immigration the most is increased border security and stricter more frequently enforced sanctions on EMPLOYERS that hire illegal immigrants. If illegal immigrants can't get into our country and can't get jobs when they come here then they will naturally stop coming without a need to invade citizens privacy. Quit taking away our civil liberties. FREEDOM is what our fore fathers fought to give us during the revolutionary war and the creation of our nation. Franklin, Washington, etc. are probably rolling over in their graves right about now.
Just this last year Under President Obama of the United States of America, his administration deported 30,000 more illegals than Pres bush did in his last year. Under Pres Obama last year, of the 396,906 people removed from the U.S., more than half — 216,698 —had been previously convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, according to the ICE numbers, which represent a 90 percent increase in the number of criminals deported over those for fiscal 2008. The numbers mark a 10 percent increase over criminals removed in fiscal 2010 — about 195,000.
Roy writes,"Normally, that true because 80% of MSNBC followers are left of center, but when those same people vote overwhelmingly against Obama's policies, it's very revealing."
Roy you need to bend over and tuck your head between your legs to get some blood flowing up there. I would love for you to post that source so we can all laugh some more at originator. I presume you wouldn't want to claim yourself for that nonsense.
But that is the crux of the problem. Police officers are not stupid, and those who profile as a matter of course always have a "reason" for pulling you over.
Hell, I got stopped one night in a predominately white neighborhood, by a police officer who said he had run my plates and they had come back as being stolen. That was an outright lie, since I had owned the same car with the same plates for over 5 years, and had all five years of State Motor Vehicle Registrations in the car to prove it. My point is this, just because the law says they have to have a reason doesn't mean they won't stop you for no reason at all and then "claim" they did have one.
Unless you have been the victim of profiling you don't understand the angst that the provision in the AZ law gives to minorities in this country. That's why the law get the "Papers Please" label, because during the pre-civil rights era it was legal for any white person to stop a black person and demand their papers. Problem was, if you were born in a free state (ie one that did not practice or condone slavery) you had no papers to show. Kinda like what would happen to an American born person of Hispanic descent who would get stopped and then be told to produce proof of their citizenship.
As yourself this question; if the police stopped you today and demanded that you provide them with proof of your legal citizenship could you do it?
Yes, I went to school in the US. K through 12, at private schools that my adoptive parents paid for. A average, honor roll most years, suspended once for fighting (punched a bully who was picking on a Special Ed kid I was tutoring). Wanted to go into the Army like Dad, marched around the house wearing his fatigues, wore his dog tags, took his parachute off the roof of the house once (Dad and Mom BOTH skinned me alive for that stunt!)
At the time I was detained by ICE, no, I had not worked--I had just graduated high school and was on my way to art college to be a police sketch artist.
I did have a DL, brand new.
No. I followed the law. Which meant sitting in a deportation camp for three years writing letters to every courthouse in three states trying to find an adoption paper I never knew I needed. I was legally adopted but never told I was adopted before Dad and Mom passed away in a car accident. 18 years after I was adopted, 6 months after Dad and Mom died in that car accident, ICE comes to me with a 'papers, please' request--and I had no idea what they were talking about, so they declared me illegal and put me in deportation. They couldn't deport me, since I legally had no home country to 'send me back' to so I was told I would remain in deportation until I gave them a copy of the adoption record.
Did they follow the law when they allowed male camp guards to strip search and body cavity search me? Did they follow the law when they gave me food with maggots in it? Did they follow the law when they gave me underwear that still had blood from another woman's period crusted in it? Did they follow the law when they allowed guards to take me out, tell me to strip, put a gun to my head and pull the trigger--on an empty gun?
Once declared 'illegal' I had no rights, even though I was 'legal'--I had a legal BC, DL, and SS card, and yes, the BC was legal--the one I had matched the one that my parents filed with INS after they adopted me. They filed the adoption decree along with the BC. The BC I had matched; the adoption paper was just lost.
Papers please + no papers = life in deportation is apparently the law now.
When will this show be aired on 20/20? I assume you have taken all this to the press and can prove the allegations you are making.
Halleluiah - These posts show many people are tired of the misinformation the media many times spews - people are finding the facts, and presenting information that's not bias. The media states Arizona's "tough" immigration law is getting reviewed by the Supreme Court - hopefully the Supreme Court will support Arizona's law/State power over Federal power. - also with healthscare.

Family Research Council (FRC) Action recently sent out this voter guide for Republican Presidential candidates.
The issue of illegal immigration, exascerbated in 86 by the Republican "Messiah" Reagan when he granted amnesty, thereby opening the floodgates, will not go away if the Republicans are lucky enough to land the White House. Past history proves Republican refusal to deal with the issue. Aren't you all tired of trotting out the same social s..t (gays, birth control, abortion, illegals,)every four years and then stuffing a gag down your throat if/when the Repubs win. Bush and Republicans had six long years of total domination of the US government, yet nothing was done and there was no battle cry from the lunatic fringe. Now of course they have lost the White House, to a black Democrat, so listen to all the BS they're trotting out. Having lived in Arizona for many years I can tell you now that not one caucasian or Asian or Arab (well maybe arab cause they look brown) illegal immigrant will be caught by Sharf Joe and Brewer will wink and nod at the AG business owners who knowingly hire illegals. Good luck going up against the Chamber of Commerce (those damn Democrat job creators) NOT, on E-verify. Corporations are people my friend and evidently can't be deported. Oh by the way, you "anchor baby" antagonists, good luck changing that one as the Constitution is very clear and we all know how the current make-up of the SC(R)OTUS are such strict constructionists and John Bir... I mean Federalist Society members.
Bo-1925019 yep Obummer relatives who came to the country illegally are still here. Amanda you have your SS number and a simple call from the officer can verify you.
The U.S. has the most liberal immigration policy in the world and it is abused. There are many ways that a foreigner can enter and work in the U.S.
Compare that with Australia, New Zealand, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Israel, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Burma, China, Afghanistan etc. and you will run out the door and kiss the soil that is the U.S.
Do a google search for for the evaluation of Willacy County Detention Facility in Raymondville TX on ICE (dot) gov. Also look at Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International's evaluation of the place--they were the ones who dubbed the place 'Ritmo' because they said it was like Guantanamo Bay.
Yes, I'd provide them with my state issued drivers license, my insurance and registration for the vehicle, and my concealed weapons permit. If the police are thinking logically and aren't out to deport me on purpose, this is plenty of proof.
I'll admit that the law is probably going to get abused as it is. If the police followed the law 100% of the time and only pulled people over when they were supposed to, it wouldn't be as big of an issue.... so not sure how to fix that, perhaps make it easier to file grievances against an officer for pulling you over under false pretenses, and make sure those complaints have some strict consequences for the officer (provided they are factual, don't want people filing complaints just to get back at an officer).
And sorry to hear about your being pulled over on a BS excuse. I hope you got the officer's badge number and filed a complaint, teach him/her a lesson.
Amanda-2017567 "Once declared 'illegal' I had no rights, even though I was 'legal'--I had a legal BC, DL, and SS card, and yes, the BC was legal--the one I had matched the one that my parents filed with INS after they adopted me. They filed the adoption decree along with the BC. The BC I had matched; the adoption paper was just lost."
I'm not saying that you're not being truthful about your experience, but with a BC, DL , and SS card, I find it hard to believe that the government still arrested you and kept you detained in a deportation camp for three years. I don't know of ANY citizen that could provide more documentation than that.
It sounds like you have a good lawsuit against the government.
Someone will always come up with a story about something and talk is cheap. Many people will exaggerate or lie to make a point and it happens all the time on the net. Nothing can be taken as truth unless it is verified three times. I have to say that the lies and liberalism on msnbc.com has really been an education. I read and then I go and find stories and spend half the night looking things up. And it is FASCINATING. The first thing is the unbelievably bad reporting, one sided, wrong, stupid, erroneous and hideous in its fact checking and blatant liberalism. The first thing is to check the author. Most times the author refuses to put in an email address or a means to contact them. Hell the IRS when you call them up, the person gives you their name and badge number! The damn "reporters" hide!!!!!! And when you check who else they wrote for, you find a list of liberal publications as long as your arm. It is a joy to find out these people are arrogant liars and then that leads you to the truth. Just look at what they say and if they give any sources or references, look them up and follow those up and finally you get to the truth of the matter and it is a far cry from what they "report" happened.
Now Amanda supposedly was treated illegally. Yet she neglects to mention any legal action she took! HMMMMMMMMMMM That would be my first avenue. A lawyer and a multimillion dollar lawsuit. Hell the lawyers would be lined up at her door and calling her up. Yet not a peep.
After getting enlightened by all the liberal liars on msnbc.com, I cannot accept one person saying this happened to me and I didn't do anything about this.
Amanda-2017567 Your eyes should be brown. A certified copy costs you .25 cents. You have a bank right? You take your paper to the bank, get copies made and have the bank official who is a notary, notarize the documents. End of story. I always walk around with duplicates and drive the police crazy. I have the court ruling that in the event of lose etc. a duplicate can be used to prove identity. The only thing that is real is ONE credit card. And that I have a copy of front and back and the telephone number to call to cancel it if it is lost.
Amanda you make such pretty lies. Which msnbc.com writer helped you write the story you printed. He should get a prize for fiction. And after you got out of detention, you didn't sue? You didn't call up one newspaper to complain? Nothing was ever reported or written about your experiences? You didn't call up your senator or congressman? You had absolutely no family or friends to come to your aid and of course you didn't call the ACLU or any lawyer!
Isn't msnbc.com great for writing fiction!
AirThief:
Or...We'll just throw the bum out. Get the economy back to where it should be and secure the borders as well as implementing a stiff immigration policy against illegals and those who employ them, including the Hollywood elite. But nice try...unfortunately for you and those like you that type of sarcastic argument is all that baracks got to fight with. Like his presidency, it too will fail.
bulldog dude, you're suspended for a week for violating #1 of the Code of Honor. Rough recent history. Read the rules.
I'm not really worried about this law being abused to the point where legal residents and citizens have their civil rights violated. A couple of good law suits for false imprisonment will put a stop to that crap in short order.
Yes, my eyes are brown, since I apparently have Asian ancestry.I thought about having copies made of m naturalization certificate but on the front at the bottom it specifically says that it's against the law to make copies of the certificate, and in case it's needed to prove identification, only originals will be accepted by federal authorities. I do have a couple of Xeroxes of the certificate at hiome just in case but those are, by USCIS, ICE, and DHS mandate, not acceptable as proof.
The Patriot Act indemnifies Homeland Security, its officers, officials, agents and employees against lawsuits because they are acting in the interests of national security. So no, I didn't sue because the law says I can't. No, I didn't call up a newspaper to complain, didn't call a congressman or lawyer. Thw mention of the word 'illegal' shut a lot of doors back then, there wasn't the outcry agains civil rights violatins there is now.
When ICE released me from detention it was with the warning that if my name comes up in front of them again for any reason, they have the right to revoke my naturalization and place me back in deportation. Making a fuss or creating waves was absolutely the LAST thing i wanted to do; I was on welfare stuggling to find a job (as you can probably guess, the word 'illegal' shuts a lot of doors, even with the word 'former' in front of it.) I was on welfare and hated it, living in a womens' shelter and getting clothing handouts from a church while I tried to find a job, then once I found one it was saving up enough to get home (the deportation camp was in TX and my 'home' was in upstate New York.) So I kept my head downm kept my nose clean, never been in trouble with the law, not even so much as a parking ticket or speeding ticket.
When you're detained by ICE, you don't get a phone call, or a lawyer. I never saw a lawyer the entire three years they detained me. Dad was a Vietnam and Korean War vet, brought my Mom over from Korea after the war, and his family disowned him because they didn't understand why he would want to marry a Korean woman when he'd just been over there fighting them. By the time they adopted me all ties to his family had been cut and it was just Dad and Mom and me. I was a bit of a loner in school, never popular, shy, took me a long time to get to know people and make friends, and since Dad was in the military and we moved around a bit, I never really had any best friends growing up. So no, I didn't have a support system.
Just racism pure and simple. Different day, same characters. After all these years, still the same problem from the same ignorant folk.
Why don't you and your fellow travelers knock off the "RACIST! RACIST!" rants? It's old and tiresome and paints you as an offensive fool.
We have immigration laws for a reason. There are about 3 billion people who would love the chance to come and live here if we gave them the opportunity. It should be obvious to even the most naive liberal why that's a bad idea.
And there it blows, the race card. Didn't take long, did it? You know, it is possible for conflict to arise that has nothing to do with ethnicity. Or do you think a bunch of unemployed and sometimes violent Irishmen coming across the border would be more acceptable?
tron777888777888
Tell you what lets see you stand for what you believe in. Take your happy a$$ down to Mexico and enter that country illegally and see what happens to you. As a matter of fact pick a country and see what happens to you.
The way this Administration is spending the money the dollar will be less then the Peso and Americans will be trying to get to Mexico to find a job in one of the American companies down there. NAFTA, CAFTA that's the problem. Cheap labor more profit to the bottom line all the while leaving the citizens of this country that made them what they are in the toilet.
This $hit didn't start with Bush and it won't end with Obama.
Nope, not RACISM. " LEGALISM". There IS no "RACE" of law breakers. And as has been shown amply on FL news in the last month, "Hispanic is white".
Nice try, tho, to immediately label anyone who doesn't want ILLEGALS here, (whether they be from Mexico, Ireland, Korea or Bangladesh) but welcomes LEGAL immigrants who HAVE been screened for health, criminal records, etc, as being a 'racist.'
Tron, this isn't about racism. Do you realize that there are more Irish Illegals in the Boston area than any other nationality? Should they be allowed to stay? HELL NO. Get rid of all the illegals.
The race card: The only resort for those without a valid argument.
@tron777888777888 - How can you play the race card with this article AND with the Trayvon Martin case. Sorry but you simply can't have it both ways. Hispanic isn't even what consititutes illegal aliens. Sure Mexicans may be the single largest group but we also have illegal aliens from many middle-eastern countries; a Turk was deported in Arizona while I was on the police force there and that was years ago. Many want to enter the country legally but cannot due to the ceiling in place to prevent our economy from imploding. Unfortunately the illegal (mostly Mexican) aliens completely dominate the system to the extent that many of these people simply vanish into the city rather than go home to their third-world country.
The simple fact is that because the Mexican Government forces their citizens to to pay bribes for work permits in the US (and you should see the lines in Nogales when those contracts come available!) it is cheaper to simply cross the fence and hope for the best. They estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 Mexican nationals have DIED in the desert of southern Arizona ALONE in this effort, many of whom are never counted, never noticed as missing and whose bodies will NEVER be found. Anything that continues to promote this willful act is akin to murder in my eyes and anyone that supports the current system of porous borders and little or no enforcement is guilty of murder.
These unfortunate people are not illegal immigrants, they are illegal aliens. They have no intention of becoming American in any way. some have brought their children across and I accept that these children will require special handling, but the parents should be sent back home in these cases and then the child, if they desire, can sponsor them back . . . legally! We have enough criminals and do not need more of them and illegally crossing a countries borders is a crime, punishable by imprisonment and even death in many places including, interestingly enough, Mexico.
Janine - And, if the Irish illegals visit Arizona, how many of them in all likelihood will be randomly stopped and asked to show their papers vs. the legal Mexican residents of Arizona who might be stopped and asked to show their papers? There most definitely is a racial component to this law, thus, the controversy.
tron...now if you will write a comment using the words 'nazi', 'hitler', 'show me your papers', 'xenophobe' and 'hater' we can move on to intelligent debate.
Illegal is NOT A RACE, SO STOP IT! If part of the law is that a cop can just walk up to you and ask for I.D. without
probable cause, then that part of law should be eliminated! Otherwise, it is a FEDERAL LAW THAT THE FEDS SHOULD ENFORCE!!! Yes, go after the people hiring illegals, fine and prison time. No jobs, no illegals! Stop benefits to kids born to them, stop the welfare and food stamps, make it undersirable for someone to come here BREAKING THE LAW to get here! I know it is horrible in Mexico and other Latin American countries, they need to fix thier own problems, this country just can't handle this crap anymore! The cirme, gangs hospitals suffering, trashing our national parks, the border towns being trashed, ranches where illegals shoot people's livestock, I could go on! Take a look for yourself, it DOES happen! I have NOTHING against those who come here LEGALLY then WELCOME! But I despise those who break what laws should be enforced by our government and aren't!!
My illegal alien neighbors said,Obama no good,no jobs,we go back to mexico.
Tron..........my grandparents came to America after WW1. They had to jump through hoops to become legal. Why doesn't "LEGAL" register with some people ???
@bmilleroh - If the police stopped an Irishman and they failed to produce valid identification, I would expect them to check their immigration status as well. Sounds likely to me.
Actually No. They do that all the time in NYC.
I don't see what the problem is in showing your ID for whatever services you wish to receive. Whether it is to vote, to receive Welfare, to enroll your children in a public school. If you expect the government (as in US) to give you any kind of service, you should prove that you and your children to entitled to them.
It doesn't matter what your race/nationality is. If you are illegal, you ARE a ciminal and should be treated as such.
There most definietly IS a racial component to the law. How likely is it that a croatian illegal immigrant is going to be stopped AND be verified for citizenship. Pretty much zero. So what you're going to have is anyone that looks remotely hispanic being constantly verified. Once is ok, I get that. But it isn't going to just happen once. If your name is Sanchez, or Dominguez, or any other hispanic name, get ready for a constant hassle folks. And the explanation for it is...you should be happy according to our right wing bretheren.
This is purely on the liberal side a means of increasing their numbers. They are in fear of losing the presidency and need to build up a class of loyal subjects. You will not see rich Liberals sharing their money with illegals, but they will allow the government to share YOUR money with them.
It's not too expensive to get a fake ID. I personally don't carry more than my Drivers License with me at all times. I may be wrong but does the DMV and your drivers license have the needed information to determine whether you're legal or not? When someone is looking for proof of legal citizenship wouldn't that require more than just a DL? Like you're SS card, birth certificate or passport? I don't carry those with me ever. SS is memorized, and birth certificate and passport are such a pain to replace I don't take the risk of losing those just to go to Wal-Mart or a walk in the park. Also though I don't feel it's a law that was written based on racist feelings, how does a police officer determine simply by looking at an individual that they may be illegal? To make it fair they will have to randomly check all people and keep a log of that or there will be race issue down the road in response to this law. You can not say there isn't any racial profiling if everyone you check has the same physical characteristics. It will have to be proven that is not whats happening.
Flip12U2.....writes...."my grandparents came to America after WW1. They had to jump through hoops to become legal."
Hula Hoops not invented until 1958. Some Native Americans had hoop dance in their heritage.
Both sets of my great Grandparents came through Ellis Island, they mentioned nothing about hoops in their diaries.........................................oh I am just a funnin with ya!
See this from an AP article:
Ernesto Galarza, a New Jersey-born U.S. citizen of Puerto Rican descent who was held illegally for three days in the Lehigh County Prison. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ordered his detention, erroneously believing he was an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic. Galarza’s Social Security card and Pennsylvania driver’s license were in his wallet at the time of his arrest and in the prison’s possession during his detention. Galarza was not told why he was being held for nearly three days.
My first thought is that you are in a place known to be frequented by illegals. Further, it seems reasonable that if you don't speak English, it would certainly be an indicator.
Well, I've lived in AZ for 20 plus years and they have alawys have had trouble with the boarded. But we aren't the only state, the enire US is being invade somewhere at some particular time from any other countries, usually not the best of people. The worse, the bad and the ugly- really ugly come to hurt us and our families take our jobs get on welfare, have their babies here so they cant be deported, I heard a joke the other day saying that there were two men jaun and pedro both good friends both illeagle, both begging for monies from the nice white chico's (spelling off). One was so upset that he did not make much money and couldn't understand why. He held a sign saying he had a family to support. His friend says thats your problem, you didnt word your sign right, his friend looked at the sign and it read "If you give me 10 more dollars I can go back to Mexico. But you see thats not the end Juan, he has a big expensive house a couple of cars and everyday comes home with a suitcase full of money, your money. Not really funny if you think about but is very true every day, no matter what boarder. SCARY! And we let them.......
Amanda-2017567 You lied. Ernesto Garlaza was arrested on suspicion of selling cocaine and it was noted on his arrest sheet that he was a U.S. citizen born in N.J. As the three other people arrested with him admitted they were illegal aliens, Galarza was held to verify his identity. As he declared he was a U.S. citizen he was not placed in the illegal alien section of the prison. ICE was called to verify his documents. Ever hear about forgery and getting documents using deceased peoples' names? Nice try. One more time with feeling!
It's not a racist law. Illegal immigrants with British and French and Aussie and Norwegian accents, will get busted too. Especially in Arizona. The cops there will be much less likely to ID someone with a Mexican accent than someone with a Turkish accent, because to them, the Mexican accent is so common, they will have gotten bored with it quickly.
dictionary:
What I posted was a cut and paste from an article. I didn't write it myself. Thank you for setting me straight; in the future I'll avoid using that particular newspaper for information since it is so blatantly biased. Thank you.
Yes Amanda...you seem to do a lot of cutting and pasting of AP articles. How about posting links so we can see the true facts!
For some reason I can' t get links to stick.
To stop the flow of illegal immigrants the gov't has to make it not as appealing to live here. Require schools, apartments, and places of employment to check for legal residency and this problem will stop quickly.
Virtually every other country in the world requires prospective legal immigrants to demonstrate proof of financial responsibility before they are permitted to enter the country.
Not only do we not require this of legal immigrants, the current Administration encourages illegal immigrants to come and avail themselves of taxpayer paid services.
If anyone wants to see a draconian immigration law go look up Mexico's.
The sad thing is, you'd THINK that at least landlords would discreetly do this anyway--as I have posted before, my son, who lives in CA, lived in a "one bedroom" (actually a nook, that would ONLY hold a bed, and nothing else!) apartment, and the group that lived below him in the SAME size (extra teeny!) apartment had a man and wife, one of their mom or grandmother, a teenager who had Down Syndrome, and 4-5 grade school or below. Since the apartment rent included water and electricity, you'd THINK the landlord would realize that that 'little' family unit was costing him WAY more than my son was, without even taking into consideration wear and tear on the carpet, appliances, walls, plumbing (8-9 people on ONE toilet!) etc. And two months after that 'little' family moved in, my son moved out. Too much noise.
Just like the previous administration encouraged illegals to come to the U.S., work as cheap labor and lower the wages for the rest of us.
bmiller - And you want that to continue? What is your point?
Shame on you that isn't legal under federal rules. If your school accepts federal lunch money they are not allowed to ask if someone is legal only if they live in the district. Same goes for federal housing projects etc. The ACLU will come after you.
Funny how if you're illegal you don't have to provide anything, but when I registered my child for kindergarten, they required copies of birth certificate, vaccination record, health condition note from the pediatrician, and a utility bill in my name to prove we lived in the district.
And fine those cities who title themselves as "sanctuary cities"!! Protecting the illegal criminals?? What other country does THAT?? Talk about STUPID! And dangerous for us citizens!
All the documents that an American citizen has to provide to work, vote, register a child for school, get welfare, get a car, an apartment.
Why do I have such a hard time believing that my illegal citizens are providing these same documents to get these same services.
just saying
My youngest son is autistic and I had to apply fo Medical assiatnce for hi through Socail Services so he could receive specialized instruction fromt his school. They tried to deny hi the first time I applied because they said i 'failed to disclose a prior immigration record.
I was adopted as a child, not told before my parents passed away in a car accident and spent 3 years in a deportation camp as an illegal when USCIS lost my adoption paper. I did finally locate the courthouse where it was filed and I was released with a naturalization certificate. All of this happened WAY before my son, who is part native american, was born.
Amanda....a decision to provide services to your child would be based upon him...not you. Even if you were illegal, they could not deny services to your son, a legal U.S citizen.
It's amazing to me you have time to write all these comments, judging by the constant and unending harassment you receive on a daily basis.
My local social services office checks the immigration status of everyone in the household. So I went to appeal the decision and they granted him medical assistance. I think if more Social Services offices asked for that kind of information and were as thorough about checking there shouldn't be such a problem with illegals getting benefits.
I work as a receptionist and biometric technician. We haven't had a lot of traffic the last couple of days likely due to crappy weather so I'm working on updating contacts and research for my boss's book. Where did I say I was getting harassed?
Something is wrong with the gop immigration laws. For example, the ceo of mercedes benz last trip to alabama to look at this new mfg plant there. He gets stopped in his rental car. His immigration papers are not in order. He is stripped searched and put in jail. What kind of papers are needed anyway. It depends. There are 50 different gop immigration laws.
Please enlighten us as to just what "a gop immigration law" is.
I bet he carries needed documents next time...unless he "enjoyed' the strip search.
REALLY? gop laws? (I'm assuming you are referrencing the REPUBLICAN party?) Sorry, but our country has ALWAYS required foreign nationals here to 'carry with them' their immigration papers. SO does nearly every other country.
And I HIGHLY doubt if the person you mentioned got stopped "for looking German''. Normally, someone is STOPPED for driving erratically, and strip searched when resisting arrest.
And BTW--we do NOT have 50 "different" immigration laws. What we DO have is SOME states who just want the feds to ENFORCE the immigration laws.
I strongly disagree with the idea of having an ID check to prove you are legally in the country, because there is no ID a natural-born US citizen can produce that proves that (well unless you're walking around with birth certificate or passport, who does?) It is a flawed concept. There have already been cases of US citizens being deported. There is no immigration database in which a natural-born US citizen appears.
Only a federal immigration court can determine whether you are legally present, a local cop during a traffic stop cannot and never will be able to, because a determination for example of refugee status or political asylum requires a court procedure.
A visitor from Canada for example can be in the US entirely legally with no valid ID, they could enter on a passport that has since expired (there is no law that requires it to remain valid during their entire stay). Most Canadians have American sounding accents. Because they visit frequently CBP usually don't track their entry and exit (have a look at the DHS yearbook of immigration statistics). How on Earth could a cop determine their legal status by the side of the road?
As far as I know the GOP doesn't have the power to pass laws. The states on the other hand do and since they are paying the bills for illegal immigration I think they should have the right. So Marshall unless you want to contribute to our education system, our public housing system, our public health system then I think you need to STFU. Quite simply a Texas DL or ID is all you need anywhere in the state to prove citizenship or legal residency. That is because you have to prove that to get either card in the first place. As a legal resident you have always been required to carry your resident alien card. And yes Canadians can cross the border without papers so can we into Canada but that does not allow the right to work in the US. For that you need a work permit. FYI I think only 6 states have passed immigration laws not fifty. Four with direct borders with Mexico and two greatly affected by illegal immigration.
Steven - A birth certificate and secondary form of identification (social security card etc) are required to obtain a drivers license. If you get pulled over and don't have a driver's license, proper insurance, or registration papers... that MAY be a bit of a hint....
lonereb.. are you saying that Arizona does not use federal funds?
BTW I think that we should be enforcing the laws on the books. Not creating new ones.
we need many new laws to stop all the caos and corruption . all americans need to help take care of our country legal americans not immigrants from anywhere . open your eyes . we have to start somewhere . i personally believe this will help . if it doesn't , we can always change the law again ,but for our sake , try something instead of just always whining and complaining ! go for it !
And if you have all these things you my STILL be taken in as an illegal:
He said, 'It sounds like a foreign accent to me.'"
A 2008 Texas law required a person's citizenship status be linked to his driver's license. A sheriff's deputy told Parrish he was detained because when they ran his driver's license information through their computer, it said that his citizenship status was 'unknown.' "I served on a murder jury in Texas and they can't find out I'm a citizen?" asked Parrish.
Uh huh, and people get wrongly convicted too. Sadly the system is not perfect.
Man is fallible, therefore no system made by man will be perfect. There are system that work for the majority but someone will always slip though the cracks.
Most state legislatures are certifiably insane.
uh guys....this article was ran yesterday, why again today?
I noticed that, too. More race baiting on msn. Maybe they ran out of Treyvon updates.
They're busy editing 911 calls and coming up with devisive headlines.
They don't want to run the story about the Baltimore case again. You know the one that took almost forty days for an arrest in the beating, robbing and strippng a white guy down to his birthday suit.
Reading the replies and "headlines" on MSN is more entertaining than ANY reality show! LOL!!
I totally agree, The South Western States SHOULD enforce illegal immigration along their borders, Of course that would also mean a savings of BILLIONS to the rest of the USA because they would also (out of total disrespect of course) refuse to accept any funding from the Federal Government,,,,,,Oh, Wait, Texas and Arizona's Governments operate almost exclusively on Federal Aid, And Texas's largest single source of income is,,,,,,,,,Federal Aid (State welfare) They might want to rethink this (as if they think period)
lmao, where do you get your info from?
Bo you are correct. The largest recipients of Federal dollars are the S.E. red voting states. They take $1.00 of Federal money for every $.30 that they send in.
It's all GWB's fault
EXACTLY - why don't more people realize this?
You forgot the fact that Texas is also occupied by 2 and a half army bases an air force base a naval airstation and a whole bunch of border patrol who question Texas citizens on their citizenship on a daily basis
What's that got to do with the price of tea in China? Matters not one bit how many army bases Texas has. Doesn't change the fact they are a welfare state who constantly sucks off the government teat.
If you follow Bo, you would know its a combo of made up and a varied use of fairy dust. He assumes his power from the MSNBC subliminal power source........ the private areas of a roselle IL. resident.
Jolly, Thank you, that was tooo funny. I'm surprised we haven't seen her yet. Oh well, funny nonetheless.
If anything, the fed should be in support of the southern states and fund them to boost our patrols along OUR border to protect OUR country! This is a no-brainer and it is amazing our government isn't on board! What is so hard about simply requiring people to have their papers and enter the country LEGALLY anyway!
And while on the subject...why not require a valid ID to vote? You have to have it to buy cigarettes and booze.
Oh, I know why...it would put ACORN out of bidness...
Bulldog, that's a hardship to the poor to require them to produce a valid ID. According to the liberals anyway.
Bulldog dude Texas can't do that Holder spanked.
And yet we need a photo ID to enter the building Holder works in. Go figure.
Simple. If you're going to require an ID at the polls, you have to provide the free opportunity to obtain one. It is immoral to require the ID, then make me pay to go get it.
By the same logic, Obamacare=Immoral.
It cracks me up the Republicks, constantly crying, we're not racists, were not, were not. "They (the Democrats) only want illegal immigration so they'll become Democrats. Voting habits, established well before illegal immigration became such a Republick talking point, clearly shows minorities, blacks, hispanics, Asians, and until recently Irish, Jewish,Catholics, women ,voting Democratic.
Why do you suppose that is???? Don't ask me I'm a white middle aged man of Irish descent (wait I'm supposed to be a tea bagger). Ask the minorities. Maybe when white folk are arrested for DWB, or men are required to be probed before a medical procedure......
President Barack Obama, and he is your President, and according to your own tenets is to be respected, when he has spent 3 years having to prove he's not a Kenyan Manchurian, and you still spew your racist hatred, well now you can see, how clearly racism has clouded Republican legislatures in their rush to pass laws without thinking, oops it's Sharf Joe and bubba who is going to be enforcing those laws, and you just gave them carte blanche. That guy with the hoodie had it comin.
With the SCotUS to weigh Arizona immigration law (SB-1070) and Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah placing their decisions on hold pending the outcome, it is not so obvious that the great state of Texas is absent from the list.
I would like to think, with Texas being right next to the border of Mexico, immigration affects them too.
Actually it's my opinion, they're not about to tip their hand, or so to speak, they choose to play it close to the chest. The great state of Texas doesn't want to let anyone know they harbor feelings either way about the law, ergo, they maintain "no opinion" and an ire silence.
Immigration is NOT an issue for Texans. They understand the federal lack of immigration enforcement and reform and the foot dragging that goes on in D.C. completely.
Immigration matters greatly to Texans and it matters little what SCOTUS rules. I'd strongly suggest il-legals crossing over into the USA do so in a sate other than.
Bill--REALLY? Immigration is not a problem for TEXAS? (and btw, you DID mean to say illegal immigration? That IS what this argument is all about.)
Sorry, but my daughter lives and works in TX, makes decent money, good job that she likes, and she is job hunting to GET OUT of TX because of all the illegals. Because she wants KIDS, and the schools, at least in Houston, are so SWAMPED with kids who do not speak English, that anyone who wants their kid to actually LEARN something besides gutter Spanish, has to pay MAJOR bucks to send them to private schools.
And did I mention that she took Spanish in HS AND college, and hacks around pretty well in it? But she ALSO took French and German and Italian and Latin (vocal music Ed major) and does not see why ALL US kids should have to learn SPANISH when there are so many other languages out there.
Mexican hitmen make great neighbors and obedient Democrats:
Why wouldn't you want them(criminals or Democrats) wandering into your neighborhood?
The Mexican Cartel Hitman Who Was Hiding in Sandusky
"Edgar Campos-Barraza had been laying low in Sandusky for 10 years... El Cholo, meanwhile, was wanted in his homeland for aggravated kidnapping and criminal conspiracy. He’s also been linked to the murder of a state cop. He was pulled over in early January and copped to his colorful background during questioning. Since then, he’s been grinding through the extradition process."

MOMaid We in Texas understand the border as a reality not as rhetoric. We have families where some members are Texas citizens and others are Mexican citizens. We work with that. It was our governor after all that said if you build a thirty foot fence the biggest industry in Mexico will be 35 foot ladders. A realistic immigration policy that serves people on both sides of the border would be more useful than all the rhetoric out there now. Yes we are paying through the nose for illegal immigration. Yes we have been begging the federal government to do their job for 20 years or more. Yes we believe that welfare programs and education programs should be restricted to people legally in the country. But we also have children of college age who have lived their entire school years in Texas. And when our governor wanted to offer instate tuition to children who graduated from Texas public schools it wasn't the people of Texas who complained it was people from all the other states. These kids are here and realistically they will always be here. Sending a kid who has lived in Texas since he was 2 back to Mexico is sending that kid to a foreign country. Secure the border first. Then we can deal with those already here. But for Heavens sake secure the border.
Lonereb--jingoism on the part of a president that I never voted for, and rarely agreed with, does NOT impress me.
Bush got us into two wars that REQUIRED us to build and DEFEND Walls/fences. We now are getting out of those wars, and will be bringing home 250K men and women to NO Jobs, and a logical use of their skills and machinery they will bring back would be first to BUILD the wall/fence and second to MAN it, using all the equipment and skills they learned 'over there'.
I feel sorry for you if your family includes illegals, but you need to urge them to go home, and get here legally, BEFORE they get caught and deported, which will make that next to impossible.
And sorry, in referrence to the 'TX Dream Act?" In 1998, my daughter was dating a guy from Dallas, even tho she was in school in Columbia MO. She would have loved to move to TX and get in-state tuition there. She couldn't. So her BF moved to MO until she graduated, and then they moved back to TX after she GRADUATED. Eventually they broke up, and she moved back to KC, but went back to get her MBA (and paid out of state fees for that, and got hired in Houston. Looking for a Condo there, there were whole BUNCHES that were just not acceptable for a single female, because less than a block away, there was gang grafitti, and groups of unemployed men hanging around on street corners (with the accompanying cigarette butts, beer bottles etc strewn around.) And these were NICE condos, which have now lost a lot of their value, over and above the dump ALL real estate took. The school systems are crap, (and as a former Teacher, she DOES know) the shopping centers crowded with people who do not speak English, and you think this is not a problem?
How MANY illegals have to pay sales tax on $20K a year untaxed income before it compensates for the INCOME tax (state) she pays, the PROPERTY tax she pays, and of course, the sales tax on income 5 times greater? Not to mention her husband's similar contribution?
They are looking to relocate. SO happy you feel losing good CITIZENS like them is worth tolerating illegals.
I live in Houston and have two children. Kids here do not "have to learn Spanish." And there are scores of schools here that don't look at all like what MOMaid says. Don't rely on secondhand info.
Does anyone but me notice that MOmaid has either a daughter, a son, brother or sister or someone that has direct involvement in EVERY topic discussed. And hint MOmaid, all the filler blather about your supposed daughters school trysts, no one cares. And I call BS. I live in Houston now andlwas born and raised in Dallas. Your stories are nothing but pure fiction you pulled from your arse.
What all those arguing about illegal immigration fail to realize is that the problem is not confined to just people coming from Mexico looking for a better life. Border agents have caught Syrian and Yemen terrorists coming accross the border and who knows how many they didn't catch. This is not about Mexico anymore. This is a matter of National Security which certainly makes one wonder why the heck the Obama Administration fight so hard to keep the border porous and to keep illegal people from being deported. Like the Muslim Brotherhood being welcomed into the Whitehouse a couple of weeks ago. One has to wonder what the %$^#@ is going on up there and why?
I am so grateful for our Supreme Court. Our forefathers probably never imagined a mess like our government is at the moment but they were wise enough to put this check in place to keep dictatorships from succeeding. God Bless the USA and The Supreme Court.
All illegals go home!!! America can not afford to support you parasites any more. Free school section 8 housing and food stamps are for legal citizens ONLY...
Actually, they are going home.
Maybe we could talk some of our legal parasites to go to Mexico...
bulldog dude,
I agree. Mexico could probably use a few thousand more lawyers.
Its GOP policy Other Countries benefits first tht why nothing being done on illegals,President Obama policy on Americans First.
Do You really thinks GOP think about YOU the citizen?
GOP seems to forgotten, what goes around comes around !
Net immigration between Mexico and the US is now at zero. Seems to me that the US gov under Obama is doing its job. Bushes didn't even try, unless you want to count his destruction of the economy as an anti immigration measure!
Stupid people own computers to spew their twisted minds here.
Wow James igonrance is bliss. The only reason the illeagals are not coming is because, get ready for this, our economy is worse under Obama than Bush. There are no jobs so why come. Please entertain me with the Obama policy that sent back all these illegals?
How many years after he's gone are we entitiled to blame Obama for everything that is wrong with this Country? It's time for Obama to start taking responsiblity for his own actions instead of blaming Bush for everything. He appears weak when he can't stand on his own record so he blames others.
Waterguy--evidently at LEAST 3 1/2 years, because that is how long they have been blaming Bush!
@geo-1957883 "The only reason the illeagals are not coming is because, get ready for this, our economy is worse under Obama than Bush."
@MOmaid "Waterguy--evidently at LEAST 3 1/2 years, because that is how long they have been blaming Bush!"
Our economy is doing much better under President Obama than it was under President Bush. At the end of Bush's presidency we were losing 750,000 jobs every month and the stock market was at 6,500.
Under Obama we have had over 2 years of positive job growth and the stock market has nearly DOUBLED!
It is not worse. It is better. Romney has been quoted several times acknowledging that the economy is better than it was when Obama took over. Facts.
If Bush took a crap on your kitchen floor and Obama cleaned it up, would you come into the room and declare: "Man, it smells like sh@% in here. This is all your fault Obama!"
The statute of limitations for blaming Bush will run out when the effects of his metaphorical kitchen dump can no longer be smelled.
I am not talking about just illegals, I am talking about all immigration between the US and Mexico, legal and illegal. I don't think we really have to discuss how and why Bush is responsible for the economic collapse, but if your curious you might want to watch Frontline's presentation of the facts surrounding those events. And if that isn't enough, just ask yourself how could the government not know about the risks being built into our financial system by Wall Street? How is it that they had no standing plan to address those risks, and why were they completely blind sided by those events? And once those events started to become apparent why were they having to improvise solutions? What finally drove Bernake, Paulson and Geithner to the point of having to ask Congress for what was basically a blank check to PREVENT THE TOTAL COLLAPSE of the world wide financial system? Well folks, that was ALL a result of the committment to deregulation, to ignoring obvious warning signs, to following the so-called "Moral Imperative" and from making bad decisions at every step of the way. Essentially Bush and the Boys abdicated their responsibility to gaurd Americans from runaway greed, and once the Ship is sunk and laying on the bottom it takes a hell of an effort and a lot of time to raise it back up.
Another MSN graduate, believing what you read. Use facts
The standstill appears to be the result of many factors, including the weakened U.S. job and housing construction markets, heightened border enforcement, a rise in deportations, the growing dangers associated with illegal border crossings and the long-term decline in Mexico's birth rates. Obama's policies only get a small portion of the credit.
Ah James....Clinton deregulated the banks and wall street.
It is the destruction of the economy that is causing illegal immigrants to go home. That and the fact of all the anti-immigrant rhetoric in this country. Since we have busted about 6 illegal stash houses in the last month in the RGV I don't really think illegal immigration has stopped. But gee we now do have a 15 yr old facing being charged as an adult for 9 counts of murder for deaths caused by a roll over accident while he was driving 17 illegal aliens. BTW the DA and the defendant are both hispanic so don't bother pulling out your race card.
Sparklystar,
Clinton deregulated the banks to give them a broader range of businesses that they could engage in and make them more globally competitive, but nowhere did he advocate letting them run wild, or suggesting the government should forfeit its responsibility to the American People to continue to monitor those business activities. The fact is and its undeniable, the Bush administration had no idea what was going on on Wall Street. Their actions before and after the Bear Stearns collapse prove that. They totally trusted Wall Street Bankers to act responsibly as did Greenspan. It was inconceivable to both Bush and Greenspan that a dog would crap in its own bed, or that Wall Street would bankrupt itself in a diarrhea of greed. But as we all know now, that simple fact was learned far too late.
Even Clinton admitted that the trouble at the banks and on Wall Street started in 2000 on David Letterman of all places. I almost had a heart attack when I heard him admit it. Of course he immediately started backpedaling by saying Bush and Congress should have done more but the fact is, Clinton and congress, led by Pelosi , took the strongest economy in 30 years and flushed it away. Playing fast and loose with the numbers got us here and pandering to hispanics in Florida and Cuba will only make things even worse. We have to be fiscally sane.
James, it still comes down to deregulation, doesn't matter the reason for it, it happened and Clinton must have trusted the banks to act responsibly too, otherwise he would not have done it.
LOL, Look up the real numbers
Recent numbers indicate that as many people are returning to Mexico as are coming here from Mexico. That has been the result of many factors including Obama increase in deportations, few jobs, increased pressure on all latinos, etc.
The biggest factor is lack of jobs...obama is still trying to figure out what a "shovel ready" job is...
Can you provide me with a link to the source of your information bulldog dude?
The down turn in the economy is the main reason for the slow down in illegal Immigration....not the Obama Administration.
Max, Things are actually getting better in Mexico for Mexicans. Obama does deserve a little credit, he has dramatically increased deportations. When those folks pay a coyote $2500 to be taken across the border its gets pretty discouraging to be constantly sent back.
So how do you get accurate numbers of people avoiding being counted? Busting the stash houses for illegals is basically the result of the 9 out of 10 hispanics reporting them to ICE. The 1 out 10 non hispanics can't run around the Valley fast enough to see them all. Illegal crossings are becoming ecological disasters for all the trash left behind. People are tired of it in their neighborhoods.
Is it not true that every elected and appointed official swears to uphold and enforce the laws of the united states when taking office. That being true, why is their office not declared empty and vacant, also, can they be charged for not enforing the laws?
Ya know...listening to the liberals is sickening. The word "illegal" is like the word "Tom" or "Mary" to them. Not used like "illegal left turn" or "illegal to own". If they don't belong here, build a HUGE prison in Wyoming, hire guards, let them stew in the plains for a couple of years and send them BACK. Remember-they are ILLEGAL- they have NO RIGHTS. So stop blowing smoke up our rear ends and spinning this. You are un-American and most likely Communists and Socialists for oBammy ,pandering for more votes so they can get more hand outs. And yes, you need a freaking I.D. to vote, idiots.
Illegals don't vote, why would they risk that?
Illegals do vote...that is why hussein obama wants them to keep on coming. We should require ID to vote for dog catcher...let alone president.
Used to be only land owners were allowed to vote...maybe we should go back to that.
Show me any credible evidence that illegals vote. That's ridiculous. And no politician, even the desperate Republicans are going after the "illegal vote", that contention is even more ridiculous.
The notion that illegals votes qualifies as paranoid hysteria. Its certifiable! Must be a Beckism, or else you guys are Rushiacs, LOL
They have rights. They're still human beings. And there are NO credible studies indicating that illegals are voting in significant numbers. Yet you claim to "know" it's true, despite the facts.
Yet more lies. There are MILLIONS of illegals in this country, and yes, there is agreat deal of credible evidence that many of them are, indeed voting and having a large affect on the outcomes of our elections. Once again, a few minutes of research will turn up all KINDS of evidence and easy to understand explanations of how and why this is happening. It's just so easy for liberals to stick their fingers in the ears, squeeze their eyes shut and refuse to acknowledge the truth staring them in the face.
Yes.. this is America.. a country built on immigration.. convenient that now that your family is here.. that you want to turn off immigration... If it was easy to be a legal immigrant there wouldn't be illegal ones here... unless of course you just don't want these people here.
They let your greatx6 grand father in the country, so why should they not be allowed in?
Stop being selfish and learn to share this great country.
immigration starts in New York when my grand father and mother came here, why don't the mexicans use the same route, because they are illegal, i bet you 95% smuggles in dope, or has been in prison, thats what comes here, if they want to live here legally, let them get their green card, a reastaurant up the road has mexicans living and working there, 6 month's here 6's month's home. whats the problem. obama does get votes from illegals thats why they are pissing and moaning about showing ID's, i have to right here in CT> so why is it so bad, and the people in my town know me by name.
Ellis Island has been closed for quite some time. You might want to bone up a little on how your own country has evolved over the years. As for drug smuggling, if your kids, your relatives, neighbors, co-workers etc. wern't the biggest consumers then there wouldn't be such a huge demand now would there. yes Michael, I know it's hard for you to grasp but the drug business is a supply and demand business too. Guess who the biggest consumers are creating that demand? I'll wait in case you need to google or think about that for a while.
Grilled cheese, Whenever you have a few miniutes please submitt your evidence that illegals are voting if the research is so easy. I am not going to waste my time looking for it because it doesn't exist. But if you want to, go for it. I am waiting.
The state government should by all means have their say in how they handle the illegal immigration problem. They are the ones who have to deal with it on a day to day basis.
The illegal immigration issues faced by Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and California cannot be understood by someone in Maine or Chicago; they do not have the frame of reference. Just as someone who has never been in the US military cannot understand the issues faced by military personnel and veterans.
Those who are closest to/dealing with these issues on a daily basis are the ones who should be setting policy.
Amen Rico
People who do not live along the border have no clue.
So...what do we do...we put it in the hands of the most sheltered..."kept in a bubble" individuals in this country. For that matter what does hussein obama or eric holder know about illegal immigration? Maybe what they read in a brief by janet napolitano?
What a joke hussein obama's administration has become. They sue a state and let the new black poosie party carry billy clubs to the polls.
RICO--I agree with you with a minor Caveat--My home town in Central Missouri (NO border here!) has been the victim of illegal immigrants for the last decade. (We have a Tyson plant, with its accompanying feed farms)
In 2006, over one in eight kids in our schools did NOT speak English. (MOST were grade school age) Six years later, it is closer to one in SIX. Now, you'd THINK that in 6 years, the ones who were there 6 years ago would now SPEAK English, but that is not the case. And more and more are entering every year.
And this little town of 20K spends over $4 million a year, educating the children of people who should not even be here. Meanwhile, AMERICAN kids cannot even get ACCESS to our reading specialists, whose training is to deal with READING difficulties like dislexia etc. because our reading specialists are SWAMPED with teaching kids who don't speak English the ALPHABET. And I'm not talking ONLY the K-1st graders, either! They have had NO exposure to reading at home, or shows like Sesame Street/Electric Company et al, which might have ALSO helped the kid to learn ENGLISH.
As someone that lives in Arizona, I understand that something must be done. I'm 61 years of age and have been out of work for 4 years. I have a bachelors degree in business management and went to law school for a year to become a paralegal, graduating in 1998. I moved from Ohio to Phoenix in 1998 when the problem was not so strong. I got a job within 4 months. In 2008, I was laid off because of the poor economy. Now, every time I look on Careerbuilder for a paralegal position, it is REQUIRED that the applicant speak both English and Spanish so that paralegals can interact with the clients. When I graduated high school in 1969, my parents were not concerned that I was not fluent in any language other than English. I fortunately took conversational Spanish in high school for 2 years and can understand Latinos to a certain extent, but not fluently. Between the fact that I am 61 years old and the fact that I cannot understand Spanish fluently, I must take early retirement. So why am I not surprised that there are children in elementary school that do not understand English? Because they are not required to do so. In fact, the teachers are "STRONGLY ENCOURAGED" to learn Spanish fluently so they can teach the children. Is this a sign that other states will have this problem in the future? You bet ya.
These are AWESOME posts.. Linda is complaining that Spanish speaking people give TOO much business, and that businesses require people to speak Spanish.. OH NO it sounds tragic... maybe the reason you can't get a job is because you're lazy. One
MOmaid is complaining that people just don't speak his/her language.. That's very sad MOmaid.. by why should we all learn to speak English? because you do? English isn't the official language of the United States, because this country was founded to be multilingual., there's no requirement for anyone to learn English.. such as there is no requirement for anyone to learn Spanish, or any other language.
I live in Houston so.. i do know about illegal immigration.. and honestly.. i must tell you.. the most annoying part about it is people complaining about stuff like "OMG I CALLED MY DOCTORS OFFICE TODAY, AND I HAD TO PRESS 2 TO HEAR THE PROMPT IN ENGLISH! GOSH!"
English SHOULD be the official language of the United States. Most people who attend secondary school in Europe and Asia or Universities must learn English.
MOmaid, FYI- you have to learn Spanish because the Hispanic race is the largest in the US, and I'm just counting the legal citizens. Face it that we are not only takng back a portion of the country that belongs to us (Arizona) we are taking over the US, so learn the language!!
Check out the immigration laws IN ANY OTHER COUNTRY (including Mexico). When comparing ours to any other country, we don't have any. I really thought that there were many intelligent people in this country but, it seems that many do not know the deffinition of ILLEGAL.
is so easy to fix this broken inmigration laws just let mexicans, chinese, salvadorian etc.. etc get work visas and charge them let say 3.000 us dlls. and they will pay so the country made money n everyone gets here legal. insted they pay that money to the human traffickers (coyotes) is how we call them n we may died croossing the dessert , plus if they came legal they will pay taxes ( we do that anyway) but the companies keep it ( they dont report that money to the IRS) so goverment win on every way (but we have a whole bunch of stupid politics in congress, they have no brain n heart, i just dont know how we can support them!!!
Yeah BO, Illegal Immigration has been cut in half and Unemployment is dropping under Obama's policies. People need to pull their heads out of .............the sand and take a look at the real world.
DBFBOATS - that is a total lie. Illegal immigration has NOT been cut in half. The Obama administration lies about EVERYTHING and they have repeatedly lied about this as well. Do 2 minutes of research and see for yourself.
Besides everything else, it doens't matter HOW many people they supposedly deport if they refuse to secure the borders. They just turn around and come right back in again.
Be fair, Sandwich. Obama has done nothing, but the same can be said about Clinton AND both Bushes AND Reagan. The Dems haven't failed us - both parties are equally culpable.
CET, I absolutely agree. I'd be the first one to state that this problem didn't START with Obama - BUT the Obama administration is, in my view, absolutely intent on undermining this country and remaking it into a marxist regime. And as part of that agenda, they are doing everything they can to open our doors to MILLIONS of hispanic immigrants that they are intent on adding to their constituent roles. How else do you explain their absolute refusal to secure our borders, their repeated attempts at granting amnesty to millions of illegals, their "DREAM" act, their repeated lies about the numbers of illegals deported, their constant siding with La Raza, the fact that they consistently put the "rights" of illegals waaayyy ahead of the rights of American citizens AND while they absolutely REFUSE to do their jobs, and uphold our laws, have the big brass balls to sue states like Arizona who are just trying to protect their citizens from invasion and the crushing consequences of that invasion, both criminally and financially?
Perhaps instead of suing Arizona, the federal government would have better served the citizens of this country by fixing the mess they created and helping the citizens they have failed so badly. The fact that they chose instead the path of lawsuits and courts makes it quite clear what their real motivation and agenda is - and NO one is going to tell me differently. No one.
And btw? I am quite well aware that amnesty has been granted in the past. And each and every time it was done, the American people were PROMISED it would never happen again.
When can we expect the government to stop lying to us and do their damn jobs? And it's OBAMA's ADMINISTRATION that brought this suit. Remember? The Obama adminsitration is the REASON why this is sitting in front of the Supreme Court right now. So I don't need to be fair. The time for blaming other administrations as long passed. Obama owns this. And I sincerely hope the Supreme court hands him his butt on a platter.
CET2001 --- All I can say is BS!! Get informed. Unemployment has not dropped.. it's worse than ever. It looks like it (a little) because the people who started on unemployment can no longer collect because their benefits have run out! Obama has done nothing but lie and SPEND MONEY!
Umemployment is dropping under Obama? Only if you consider that many unemployed are no longer being counted for the official figures. Obama and his war on jobs is the only thing that has brought the illegal immigrant count down. Less jobs = Less illegals, way to go Obama! Kill off all the jobs and the illegal problem were completely disappear altogether.
Please, stop spouting these untruths. Do you realize that the numbe of illegal people living in this country has dropped close to 1,000,000 people under this President. Also, you must do your homework and look at the statistics. We have had 22 months of job growths. Think how much more we could have had if your republican friends were not so determined to destroy the President that they are willing to allow people lose unemployment funds, lose their homes, etc.
Republicans are a disgraceful lot. I am ashamed that at one time I routinely voted republican. Never again. They are a shameful lot who under the guise of Christianity, try to force their values down the throats of Americans.
Yuck. I hope they are trashed in the next election. Only then will the true republican party have a chance to reemerge.
Obama/Biden 2012.
We now have an INS office in Ft. Smith Ar. We are nowhere near the border and yet our schools are overrun with the children of illegals. They pay no taxes but tie up emergency rooms with ailments that should be treated in a drs office because hospitals are not allowed to turn them away. They don't bother to learn the language or our laws. How far do you think you would get in Mexico if you went there to work and live and didn't try to speak Spanish? It defies logic that our teachers and government workers let alone police depts and jails must all spend millions in tax payer dollars to cater to people who are here illegally. They are not entitled to the rights we Americans are entitled to recieve. If they want those rights they must EARN their citizenship.
Do any of you people live here in Arizona?
I live in Tucson where the school system is bankrupt due to ESL among other things caused by the influx of illegals from Mexico and Central American (Mostly Mexico though). Our indigent health care system is broken to the point where the state will no longer pay for most transplants and people with "potentially" terminal illness are not covered due to the influx of illegal immigrants and the burden they place on the system. Our criminal justice system is overburdened due to illegal immigrants that are career criminals. Border Patrol Agent B. Terry was killed 30 minutes from my home by a "rip crew" Mexican bandits that prey on both drug traffickers and human smugglers. 3 miles from my home the Federal Govt. has posted signs cautioning about a travel warning due to high volume smuggling.
And finally when the child of an illegal immigrant gets a "free" college education guess who pays for it?
My Chicano son, yes that is right my Mexican AMERICAN son is forced to take out loans due to the cuts in Pell Grants.
I am a Hispanic man whose parents immigrated here legally so no the racist argument does not work with me .
Victor--THANK you for pointing out that not ALL Hispanics walk in lock step with the pro-illegals, just because said illegals look like them, or speak Spanish.
I too, have some Mexican blood in me, and have also lived in both Merida Yucatan, and in Managua Nicaragua.
LEGALLY, of course.
And ALL three of my kids had to pay out of state fees in college, while watching kids they KNEW were not here legally get IN state tuition.
I admire you as a fine American Victor. It was wonderful to hear this viewpoint as I find this to be about people taking advantage of our largess illegally and not about race. I don't want anyone here illegally, because that does nothing but punish those who do things the right way and emigrate here according to the law of the Country where they want to live and become citizens.
Ive traveled a lot and im amazed at the amount of illegal aliens all over the usa.But people who live on border states have a lot more of them.
I couldnt beleave senator Schumer saying how he would do something if the supreme court didnt vote the way he wanted.
We have way to many people here as it is for the jobs available.Arizona just wants to enforce federal laws already on the books.
This was always pretty much a slam dunk for Arizona.
i like your comments victor,i have no problem with any mexican americans that pay into the same system americans pay into.
I have no problem with people who are here legally, period. I have a HUGE problem with the hords of illegals sucking up all of our resources and stealing from our kids. Enough is enough already. We all need to contact our representatives and demand that they do their damn jobs, enforce our laws, secure our borders and protect the LEGAL residents of this country from invasion.
It seems to me thatyou have stated the issues very weel Victor. Thanks for speaking up.
Given that the Jusice Department seems to ignore our laws regarding Immigration status, I co9nsider the attorney General and his staff to have violated their oaths to faithfully excute the laws and protect the Constitution. The federal posture on enforcement is NOT accidental and in my view comes very close to an assult upon the Consitution which provides us with the liberties we enjoy.
Victor,
All I can say is Thank you for doing the right thing and also showing your family the way the system is supposed to work.
I so wish others from all races would do the same as you did. Your a true Mexican American.
Did your parents REALLY come here LEGALLY Victor, or are you like most mexicans with US citizenship who got it FREE from Uncle Braindead Ronnie in the 1980's??? I bet they came here ILLEGALLY and were granted citizenship by the Great Corp Prostitute himself!
I came here LEGALLY from Europe. I didn't get anything free.
I was a permanent resident for 10yrs and then eventually applied for citizenship.
I'm SICK of illegals wanting to get freebies when I had to pay my due. I had to pay fees, file forms and wait on a list and have interviews. SO SHOULD THEY!
No magic wand to just let them all be citizens.
Otherwise all you liberals who want that to happen can refund me my time, money and trouble when I patiently did it the right way, as many thousands of other legal immigrants have. Nobody can dictate to me about immigration because you never were in my shoes being the system and following the rules and taking a number and waiting years. I paid my dues dishwashing while studying at university.
So I don't want some socially-conscious bleeding-heart imbecile just opening the floodgates for 11 million illegals because they feel "its a shame". -What about me and the rest of the legal immigrants that OBEY the law. It's a slap in the face to be prejudicial against me and the peoples from other nations, in favour of...Mexcan immigrants to jump to the front of the line and get citizenship, tuition aid, free health care etc etc etc. GIVE ME A BREAK!
What is truly pathetic is just how malignant and careless we have become in recent years. I read most of these ridiculous comments and I disgusts me. Despite the fact that I am definitely for legal immigration; Most of these left field comments that are made all come from a dark place in our hearts and minds. We as a people have not even progressed completely as a functional society because we continue to regress to a place and time where one man hated another for all the wrong reasons and because we stoop to such low levels of intelligence and dignity we lose the very thing that makes us the greatest nation in the world. Lets face it, at the end of the day, our ancestors came from a place other than this country and to blatantly insult a foreign born citizen so that we could feel good about ourselves is lowly.
We have problems in this country that outweigh illegal immigration. For example, drug addiction. Does anyone care to state legitimate facts concerning the costs associated with drug addiction in terms of therapy, incarceration, and degradation of the family structure. When there is demand supply will follow it is the fundamentals of economics.
Lets not play the blame game when it comes to policies. Republicans and Democrats have a shared responsibility to work together on behalf of the very people who elect them the best way possible. The Government as a whole needs to get off their high horse and remember who they represent. There is a game being played where fingers are being pointed to a particular person or group. It is pathetic to see how a group of grown adults in positions of vast responsibility act like children. We do the founding fathers an injustice and we are undoing what they fought valiantly to help create a nation unified in times of both ups and downs. Fundamentally, we are flawed and very misinformed concerning the current state of things in this country. Special interest groups are catered to before John Q public and that explains why things are not getting done.
Lastly, history is written so that we learn from it not repeat its fallacies. When people who don't have the mental discipline and morality needed to perform their tasks they exceed their limitations. Empowering local authorities to check immigration statuses without the individual being involved in illicit activities or under arrest is the excuse needed to violate civil liberties and harass the "undesirables".. Racism is alive and well as evidenced in the commentaries posted.
There will come a time when an American citizen will travel to a foreign nation and we will be treated the very same way that we treat others. What we say and do the world eventually gets wind of it and there will be a time when we will be at that end of the stick....
Whites and Blacks don't have a problem with this law...its all the various shades in between that are really affected by this...this law will be used to target all shades of brown based on stereotypes...I wonder when I'll be pulled over for being the wrong color? What charge will the cop stick me with when I do...even if I do produce valid ID...it is a burden that is forced on brown people have to carry that nobody else has to. I don't think the law in principle is all that wrong, however its application will certainly be biased and/or based on prejudice. If we're going to have to present ID, then EVERYBODY should have to carry it and EVERYBODY should be subject to the same treatment in order to prove their legal status to be here.
I have I.D with me it's called my Driver License , you must be worried about maybe getting sent back . I hope they pass the law . If you don't belong here , you don't work here .
Hey 4truth2012,
try being an american illegal immigrant in a foreign nation and see how far you get.
People think it is out of line to ask for immigration status? I dont care what country you name as long as they have a government in place, they have the authority to demand the immediate production of a passport or other ID at any time regardless of the state of illegal activity or suspicion of a crime.
Tanker10...are you brown? Because if you are, you would know what I'm talking about. If you aren't, you wouldn't be asked to produce your ID...its that simple...get it?
4 truth: you totally missed the point of the reason for SB 1070...stick to the facts and educate yourself by actually reading the bill.
they finally realize that is not about immigration ,and it's law ,it's about Latinos especially Mexicans
I'm here because my Polish and Italian ancestors applied for citizenship long before they every set foot in America. I'm here because they waited in line like everybody else. I'm here because they obeyed they laws of this country. I'm here because they worked hard without government assistance. I'm here because they wanted a better life for thier families.
I'm here because they obeyed the law of this land and worked for what they got.
The Mexicans? Not so much.
It's time to close the border with our military, sew landmines and forget a damn fence. This is an invasion of our country and it should be regarded as an act of war.
Immigrants are coming to the USA illegally from multiple countries not just Mexico. A lot of the comments I am reading are actually very scary due to the racism that is being promoted. I do believe that the federal process should be followed to gain documentation. However, the hatred towards Mexico directly is a biased stance that is unfairly causing hardships on the people that are trying to do things the right way and wanting to be productive members of society. The intentions of some appear to be just but the enforcement and use rarely is. This country was founded by immigrants fleeing persecution and I fear we are becoming the same as the people our ancestors were trying to protect themselves and us from.
Check...People mention Mexicans because that is the overwhelming percentage of the illegals...How can you not understand that?? My own city is 50% mexican and 60-70 % of them are illegal....Most of the legal ones are their children....And the gangs are 95% mexican...Not French, Italian, Chinese, etc....Acknowledging the problem is not racism...it is just honesty....
J. I live in a city that is about 60% to 70% Hispanic. I also know a lot of them are not from Mexico. Not to mention as I watch the Most Wanted list I don't see majority Mexican, and when I checked TDC Inmate Records AS A WHOLE the most severe crimes were not majority Mexican inmates. Don't get me wrong I am not saying that they didn't have a fair share of them but it was not majority. And, to the people that say the feds are doing nothing, people that commit crime in my city and don't have documentation are entered into the system and deported after their obligations to the court are satisfied. I actually see a lot of the immigrants legal and not working hard instead of causing problems. As far as I can see the most crime is coming from people with generations from this country. Our biggest problem out here is meth (don't need Mexico) and the things that come with it.
